Part 3 Above Ground Pool Deck Construction

[Music] welcome to part three pool deck construction you can easily build a 3-foot round pool deck yourself and save over $2,000 anyone would a few basic skills can complete the deck in a couple of weekends the construction specifications are for an 18 foot round pool you can modify the dimensions and materials list to fit your specific pool size you will need the following 36 concrete pier blocks eighteen two by six by eight treated lumber eighteen two by six by ten treated lumber 27 to buy 4x8 treated lumber 18 4 by 4 by 8 treated post 55 on the quarter by 6 by 12 treated deck boards 20 pounds of two and a half inch deck screws I recommend you use deck plus ten deck screws they are designed to provide superior weather protection all while coordinating with your decking finish they two four inch galvanized corner brackets [Music] lay out the concrete pier blocks along the outer perimeter of the pool you will start by building 17 support frames in the shape of a trapezoid the last frame will be cut to fit for some pools the pump and filter will affect the framing of the deck this is a great location for the last custom support frame the diagram shows how to cut the boards to build the support frames from a full eight foot two by six support board cut one and two each end must be cut at a 10 degree angle ten foot two by six support board cut three four and five board three must be cut at a 10 degree angle boards four and five are cut to the same size these are the five board sizes needed to build one support frame square the support frame by adjusting the outside boards until the distance between the opposite corners are equal after the support frame is squared Center and secure board number two with two and a half inch deck screws secure with two additional two and a half inch deck screws at each of the four corners of the support frame install a galvanized metal corner bracket in each corner of the support frame and one on each side of the center support board number two continue until you completed 17 support frames [Music] start to the left of the pools equipment panel where the skimmer and pump is located the support frame should be positioned one to two inches out from the pools top rail in order to attach decking later each cement pier block should be placed on level ground six inches in from the end of each support frame once the first for cement pier blocks are set and level place a 4x4 post in the post pocket of water to cement pier blocks and hole plum using a level and the pool's top rail as a guide mark a line level with the top of the pool's rail from this line subtract the following four items the thickness of the pool's top rail one half inch for water drainage and airflow between the decking and the pools top rail the thickness of the surface boards one inch for the five and a quarter by 6 inch decking five and a half inches for the thickness of the 2 by 6 support frame cut the four by four posts to length and repeat this step for all four four by four posts of the first support frame important depending on how the top rail is attached to your pou leave enough room between the top rail and the decking to be able to gain access to the screws or bolts that attach the rail to the pool if you have to replace the pool liner you do not want to have to disassemble the deck to remove the top rail just to replace the liner placed a support frame directly on to the 4x4 post the outside edge of the support frame should be positioned at the center of the 4x4 post the front edge of the support frame should be one to two inches out from the edge of the pools top rail using a post level make sure the 4x4 post is vertically level in both directions before attaching the support frame secure each support frame to the 4x4 post using two two and a half inch deck screws at each post use the next support frame as a guide for the placement of the next row of cement piers repeat cutting and leveling for the remaining 4x4 post and continue placing support frames around the entire pool attach each frame to the next using 8 2 and a half inch deck screws from each side of the frame into the other frame you the last support frame will have to be cut to fit the space between the equipment panel pump and filter either over or under the skimmer and skimmer return place a 2x4 board diagonally behind the 4x4 post with the pencil mark the angle at each end and attached to 2x4 diagonal boards with two and a half inch deck screws repeat the process alternating angles from section to section braces should be placed between the post along the outside perimeter of the deck and default by for post perpendicular to the pool the 2x4 bracing boards along the outside perimeter of the deck will need a compound miter cut a cut angled in two directions vertically and horizontally be sure to watch part four as we continue with the pool deck construction
