other means meanwhile Uriel descending on a sunbeam warns Gabriel who hadn't charged the gate of paradise that some evil spirit had escaped the deep and past at noon by his sphere in the shape of a good angel down to Paradise discovered after by his furious gestures in the Mount Gabriel promises to find him out ere morning night coming on Adam and Eve discourse of going to their rest the bower described the evening worship Gabriel drawing forth his bands of Night Watch to walk the round of Paradise appoints two strong angels to Adam's power lest the evil spirit should be there doing some harm to Adam or Eve sleeping there they find him at the ear of Eve tempting her in a dream and bring him though unwilling to Gabriel by whom questioned he scornfully answers prepares resistance but hindered by a sign from heaven flies out of paradise Oh for that warning voice which he whose apocalypse heard cry in heaven aloud then when the dragon put to second route came furious down to be and Dominion given over all other creatures that possess earth air and sea then let us not think hard one prohibition who enjoy free leave so large to all things else and choice unlimited of manifold delights but let us ever praise Him and extol his bounty following our delightful task to prune these growing plants and tend these flowers which were it tiresome yet with bee were sweet to whom thus of like repose since God hath set labour and rest as day at night two men successive and the time did you sleep now falling with soft slumbrous wait inclines are islands other creatures all day long row vital unemployed and less need rest man hath his daily work of body or mind appointed which declares his dignity and the regard of heaven on all his waves while other animals on active range and millions of spiritual creatures walk the earth unseen both when we wake and when we sleep all these with ceaseless praise his works behold both day and night how often from the steep of echoing hill or thicket have we heard celestial voices to the midnight air soul or responsive each to others note singing the great creator oft in bands while they keep watch or nightly rounding walk with heavenly touch of instrumental sounds in full harmonic number joined their songs divided the night and lift our thoughts to heaven the stalking and in hand alone they passed on to their blissful Bower it was a place chosen by the sovereign planter when he framed all things to man's delightful use the roof of thickest covered was in woven shade Laurel and myrtle and what higher grew of firm and fragrant leaf on either side a canvas and each odorous bushy shrub fenced up the verdant wall each beauteous flower Aras all hues roses and Jessamine reared Haida flourished heads between and wrought mosaic underfoot the violent crocus and hyacinth with rich in lay brighter the ground more coloured than with stone of costliest emblem other creature here beast bird insect or worm Durst enter none such was there all man in shadier power more sacred and sequestered though but famed pan or sylvain 'as never slept nor nymph nor Faunus haunted here in close recess with flowers garlands and sweet-smelling herbs dispositive decked first her nuptial bed and heavenly choirs the high minion son but day the genial angel to our sire brought her in naked beauty more adorned more lovely than Pandora from the gods endowed with all their gifts and Oh - like in sad event when - the unwise her son of Japheth brought by Hermes she and snared mankind with her fair looks to be avenged on him who had stole job's authentic fire thus at their Shady Lodge arrived both stood both turn and under open sky adored the God that made both sky air earth and heaven which they beheld the moon's resplendent globe and starry pole thou also mates the night make her omnipotent and now the day which we in our appointed work employed have finished happy and our mutual help and mutual love the crown of all our bliss ordained by thee and this delicious place for us to large where thy abundance once partakers and uncropped falls to the ground but thou has promised from us - a race to fill the earth who shall with us extol thy goodness infinite both when we wake and when we seek as now thy gift of sleep this said unanimous and other rights observing none but adoration pure which God likes best into their inmost
