[Music] hello everyone and welcome to another episode of wildlife crystal i'm your host wildlife crystal a wild animal specialist as you guys know on the show wildlife crystal we are going to be learning fun facts about one animal and their environment every episode i'm here with my very special co-host the one and only kaya the koala hi everyone okay i have a request can i pick the next animal we discussed today yes of course give me a hint and i'll guess great i'll give you a hint in the form of a riddle what is black and white and red all over an animal that is black and white and red i'm not sure what is it a sunburned panda bear that's a good one kaia i take it you would like to discuss the panda bear today yes please you got it first while we're on the topic i have some fun facts about why the panda is black and white pandas have a bear-like appearance and their black and white coloring has made them well known all over the world scientists believe that the pandas fur is black and white because it helps them camouflage and remember from our last episode camouflage is when animals blend in with their surroundings so they are not seen by other living things their white fur helps them hide in the snowy habitats while their black fur is used to camouflage them in with the bamboo forests they also say that the black around their eyes helps them identify other pandas cool that's cool and where do they live panda bears live in bamboo forests in remote mountainous regions in western china the cool wet environment provides the perfect habitat for pandas to feed on their favorite food bamboo shoots i have another joke about pandas and bamboo how did the panda lose his dinner don't know how he was bamboozled next she's a good one guys well you're right about pandas and their bamboo they love it pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo shoots and leaves pandas are omnivores meaning they eat both plants and animals occasionally they'll eat other plants fish or small animals but they eat bamboo plants 99 of the time pandas eat fast and they eat a lot they spend about 12 hours a day eating the reason they do this is because they only digest about one-fifth of what they eat overall bamboo is not very nutritious to stay healthy they have to eat a lot of bamboo and fast they can scarf down a shoot of bamboo in 40 seconds but don't worry their throats have a special lining that protects them against splinters but all that fiber has its side effects an adult panda can produce more than 60 pounds of droppings in 24 hours that's as much as a huge husky dog weighs wow that's a lot of poop maybe we changed the subject to baby pandas good idea baby pandas are called cubs and they grow from tiny to massive in only a few short years when the cubs are born they are pink blind and hairless the iconic black and white colors come in after about three weeks when baby pandas are born they weigh just three to five ounces that's less than a baseball within a year cubs get to about a hundred pounds a fully grown panda can be up to six feet tall which is taller than me and they can weigh as much as 350 pounds that's as heavy as three of me cubs stay with their mothers for about 18 months until they are independent enough to make their own territory or area in which they will live now that i think about it kaya you and panda bears have one pretty big thing in common oh yeah what's that koala bears and panda bears really love their naps that's probably why the panda and i look so good so much beauty rest yes for pandas instead of sleeping through the night wild pandas take naps after eating and they are constantly eating in the summertime they can nap for six hours or more so they're basically always sleeping or eating pandas don't care what position they sleep in either they can snooze on their backs on their sides on their bellies curled up in a ball sprawled out it's pretty cute also because panda bears have few natural predators to be afraid of they're not picky when it comes to a sleeping location either they'll fall asleep on the forest floor cozy up next to a tree or balancing on a branch tell us another fun fact about panda bears pandas have six fingers on each paw unlike other members of the bear family who have very little motion in their paws pandas have opposable thumbs like us along with five other fingers this helps them hold bamboo and remove the plants and stems and leaves before eating i heard panda bears are endangered is this true yes rounding off our panda facts with the sad reality even though they don't have many natural predators there are only 1 800 pandas left in the world the two main reasons that these beautiful animals are almost endangered is due to poaching and loss of habitat which means threat to their natural homes and poaching means awful hunters go into the forest and kill the bears luckily this is now very illegal today humans and destruction of their habitat poses the biggest threat to these pandas there are a few simple things we can do right now to help after learning these fun panda facts get inspired to look into conservation organizations to help panda bears today tell your family and friends some fun facts about pandas the more we know the more likely we are to help them and their homes remember every animal is so important to the ecosystem in which they live it's up to us the future generation to make sure they have a place to thrive let's all work together and make sure animals and humans live in harmony let's always be kind and respectful to every
