[Music] [Music] if you drive east of LA until there's no more streetlights you'll pass the last gas station turn right at the last stop sign and keep driving even when the asphalt turns to sin when you're finally lost you've arrived [Music] this place is brutal and impartial [Music] any sign of hospitality is just a mirage the only laws here are the laws of nature everything about this place says go away and that's what makes it irresistible [Music] Lloris mention teen is a son of the Southern California coast but whatever he wasn't surfing or shaping boards he was out here riding the sweeping dunes and winding trails this is where he was born as a rider [Music] we're growing up and coming out here to the desert this was my only real chance to ride a lot and start doing a couple races here and there and I would literally ride my bike from the property people don't strip out on that because they'd show up in their box truck and be fresh on the line and I come up all dusty even riding all we bike wasn't prepped [Music] my dad be drinking beer like 10:00 a.m. it was pretty classic these days the high desert has become a home away from home for Forrest and his dad Mike out here they built a sanctuary that they call the compound Mike bought this property when there was nothing here but an abandoned cannabis farm a far cry from shaping surfboards back in Huntington Beach for me I went when I first got it it was just like an empty canvas that I could do whatever I wanted he enforced have cobbled this place together from whatever odds and ends they could Salvage and every scrap tells a story so the house was here first when we got it was built in 1952 and then we brought in the trailer which you can't even tell the trailer anymore it's a little awning off the trailer Minho's windy one weekend so we built a wall on this side yeah then another wall no one actually knows a bedroom so they think just kind of kept expanding and curb enthrall yeah over the years the compound grew into a strange kind of Oasis their own ramshackle beach town complete with a shaping bay without an ocean in sight makes sense if you're a bench inted I like riding all kinds of bikes I've always been really into trying to do it all and be well-rounded in all different disciplines but I think for me the my favorite type of riding is just come out here on my desert bike and just rip through the wide-open desert there's no cops there's no rules it's nothing but fun [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] most people drive through this desert out here and they just see a big wasteland I to see my little slice of heaven I feel like I know every rock and every bush and every corner and I feel like you could blindfold me and take me out ten miles out in the desert and drop me off on a rock and I'd know exactly where I was I just have it memorized like the back of my hand a true understanding of the desert comes at a high price a thousand rides at dawn and a thousand more at dusk broken chains broken bones and a mouthful of sand this land is a harsh instructor but with time you might discover its subtle rewards [Music] hot knives come [Music] in depression [Music] you help me [Music] let me [Music] he had me hi [Music] [Music] the desert offers no greater reward than its vast emptiness a rare kind of solitude this is a place without judgment without boundaries do whatever you want to do be whoever you want to be the desert is hell and heaven and everything in between so be people ask me all the time while he's surf and cheap boards what do you go out to the desert because I go it because it's freedom [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
