[Music] i take into consideration how short the haircut on the body is going to be because if it's a short haircut i can take more around this edge but if it's a longer haircut and we're trying to get a really round nice shape from that fur on the top of the foot then i stay into the middle and preserve what's out here so on this dog he's getting a nice number seven short haircut that he hasn't had yet and that's why he's still a mess but that means that i can take quite a bit more out of the edge and in general i also like to keep this surface of the clippers black to the bottom of the pad unless i'm going over these edges then i tilt a little this way same over here and i tilt a little bit this way but i don't want to go all the way to the side if you go too far to the side then you're shaving the side of the pad and that will show on the top so if i was shaving this outside here that would be visible when the dog is standing but i don't want that so i want to keep flat and a little tilted okay i also want to keep a relatively loose hold on the pawn because if you're squeezing too much you're pressing the different pads together and that's getting in the way of your clippers that wants to go slightly in between the pads so let's get started on this one so i like to clean a lot of bulk off first and then go back and be a little more precise you can actually use your finger right here to stop your blade like that and that way it sort of um holds the hair there and allows it to get cut off right at that spot and as i do that i'm riding this part of the clipper is riding this around the toe that's up higher now that toe is only on the front legs there's not a similar feature on the back but especially when we're going short we do shave around because that'll send me some scissoring later later on when i'm trimming it's a little bit risky with your shears and it's less risky to just knock that fur off clippers are on a 40 by the way which is the shortest setting on this one so now that i've taken a lot of this bulk off i'm going to go ahead and get in between the pads now i use the word digging to describe what we're doing in here but i use it very lightly in other words yes you're sort of digging the fur out but it's such a light you know you're really tapping your clippers in between the pad space there i'm going to do the same thing in these three spaces as well you see how that when i'm over here my clippers are tilted that way when i'm over here my clippers are tilted this way and i'm going to do my outline with these as well but over there i'm going to cut off everything off the edge on that side and i'm going to cut off everything on the edge on this side now if you do that too far tilted and too far over you're going to lose too much of your top foot and like i said this dog is getting a very short haircut so we're not gonna keep all of this flush but i also do not want these nails to end up looking all naked so if you cut all that too short you might lose some right above demo where i do three dogs pads in a row so check out that video i'll link it in the description i like to do it after i've already done the nails you have to know how much of the front or you're trying to preserve i do want to save some length so that when i scissor the front of this foot it still looks a little bit nice and round and not just so naked in shape if you're trying to preserve all of it let's say it's a cavalier and you want to preserve all of it you're going to stay within the pad found when you do any of the shaving but if you want to shorten some of that up you can actually come in and knock that into your pache here's how i'm gonna do this one i'm taking some of that off because i know i don't want that much i stay in front of these toenails i can get everything that's below them if that makes sense and i'm going to tip a little to the side and i'm going to take all that off as well because that fur is just really going to be touching the floor anyways come on baby and this dog's getting a fairly neat haircut so i'm going to go ahead and take that off all right now i'm going to go in between all the pads so you hold everything pretty loosely all right so i tap in there and it's sort of like a digging but it's so gentle and so loose that you're not really diving in and digging out fur okay you're sort of separating the pads and getting your blade in there to trim the fur okay so i'm fairly happy with that and you've got to remember that we're coming in with scissors at the end so it looks a little ridiculous for now what if a pad has a mat in it so this pad hasn't mattered so let's take care of that right now i'm going to do all the normal stuff i'm doing the front paw the front paws are more prone to this matting anyways i'm gonna get the top stuff off here is a mat okay so i've got to get that out more gentle um quote unquote digging okay but it has to be gentle hold on baby all right so i'm going to clear out everything that i know needs to go away and now i'm going to get under this mat see how i'm gently just working it up i'm making sure my blade gets under it and there it goes and there's little more bits of it doesn't all have to come in one chunk you can turn it around again with a loose hole don't squeeze the pad because then you're closing up the space that your clippers need to go in and keep it loose tap the clippers into there okay [Music] come on baby all right [Music] all righty about got all the matting out [Music] it's pretty good i'm going to trim up around the edges a little bit but not too much because i really want to get it with my scissors from the top later hmm wow foreign [Music] thank you hmm [Music] you
