Pacifico Women’s Skateboard Vert: FULL COMPETITION | X Games California 2023

[Music] a sellout crowd on hand here's the Ventura Fairgrounds on day two of X Games California you're in for a treat it's now time for the Pacifico women skateboard bird what's happening everybody Brandon Graham alongside some of the best ever in skateboarding Tony Hawk and Amelia bratka here on the call here's a look at our start list gang I'm so excited for the return of women's skateboarding vert here at X Games Amelia it's been 13 years since this contest happened and I've literally been waiting 13 years for this and the thing is a lot of these competitors are hardly that age yeah that wasn't born yet and she's probably gonna be on the podium yeah Tony we talk about the youth movement in skateboarding across the board but none more on display than this event and it should be it's a welcome back here we get things started but uh you've been able to see firsthand with vert alert and so many of these young ladies skating at your own ramp the progression of women's skateboarding it's been incredible to watch I mean the progression in the last two years has been huge and thanks to Tony's bird alert this contest is back it was a qualifier for this event Lily stefasi has actually just missed the cut even though she had won bird alert the year prior but she made it in as an alternate and this is a great first Runner movie yes this is a good start here [Music] but Amelia bring up a good point uh the return of women's skateboard bird you were an alternate you're an X Games rookie making their debut dropping in first in front of a sellout crowd no nerves she she is a seasoned contest skater even at a young age I mean she's skated in the Olympics she won vert attack and vert alert and she's just she knows what to do she's got a plan she's got a strategy a little bit bigger so we're hitting the 29 minute Mark here Grace marhold for out of Cocoa Beach Florida competing in both Burt and park out here this weekend Grace has the best eggplants going here it seems like she's just learned how to stall them properly I feel like Grace does everything properly style matters people and Grace is showing you how these tricks are done in the textbook variety that front side air disaster oh no Clinic she was trying to do LED 50 50 there she didn't leave herself much room and so that means she had to really slide her wheels up the wall and this this uh ramp is not conducive to a lot of sliding [Music] take a look at that clinic so good in slow motion and how about the crowd behind her what a shot I love that the return of women's skateboard gets a sold out crowd as it should because these women are pushing the level of skateboarding yes the vert ramp taking Center Stage this weekend here at X Games California Tony and I had the pleasure of calling last night's men's vert competition which might have been the most insane we've ever seen yeah and I expect this will be just the same in terms of the next level that we've seen the best women's vert controversy and look at that huge Japan air here's haika Ventura speaking of huge heirs she was the first woman to do a full pull on Bob's mega ramp she basically did a 12-foot air after landing the Gap and that is a legendary moment and taika has a lot to show on the program as well you saw that comment from Jen Wang saying so high women's skateboard vert is back I saw it so far people to Pinky what a save put her in the danger zone across the flat I believe that was the first full pull of the contest the best run counts here and they should have four or five opportunities depending on how this Jam format goes yeah the clock started at 30 minutes we'll see how many we can get in but hika's first run in coming in at a score of 74.33 so that is now the current bar speaking of style check out The Buttery smooth style of Dora Berea coming out of Brazil she's got a great heel flip Indy there it is good Landing there Dora fresh off an eighth place finish at Tony's Bert alert last month [Music] she won a squad or not and she chose not to and she still finished a solid run go Dora nice Pop Tart still fish ending it there riding for her soy skateboards Dora variah's first X Games run officially in the books [Music] so beautifully caught early release Zoo big fan of that one but we saw in Mega Park The Medalist from last year also from Brazil of course but wasting no time is Ruby Lily out of Ocean City Maryland she is one of the busiest women out there she's skating parks she's skating Bert and she's been filming a video part as well she is a charger and she's got a great nose grind there it is that nollie in counts for a lot it really does it's so challenging to come off your front foot like that first run for Ruby last time we saw her Amelia it was earning silver in the park contest at X Games Japan just a few months ago that was her first X Games medal and perhaps she's going to earn another one this weekend she's got plenty of chances that's for sure it's a good start to build on right there look at this nose grind kind of getting all the way over it and then nollie in I mean if you're ever gonna learn nose grinds watch that one a 72.33 for Ruby good enough for second place so our comps format here in vert we've got 10 skateboarders a 30 minute jam session 30 second runs best single run counts so you can afford a couple of throwaways here you just got to put it down when it matters most and the judging criteria creativity yep style difficulty sure execution of the of course height of airs length of grinds pushing and progressing the sport someone who's no stranger to that Bryce wetstein we know her from Park great to see her out here in bird Amelia she's gorgeous backside Ollie that is truly Artistry and a deep bag of tricks I think she was learning tricks in the middle of bird alert in the middle of her run yes that's very likely walking off the front wheels there upping the difficulty Factor nice yeah switch 360 Rock to everybody I don't know I feel quicker maybe I think she Taps her feet in the air I don't feel like she could have a jumper up there and just it's the price we should just probably call it the price she's the only skater you'll see doing that I think 30 seconds is almost not enough time for Bryce there there were a couple of runs oh yeah we could have just kept going she could go for 90 seconds maybe even two minutes she's uh she's just a stream of Consciousness skater so I don't really think she points the posi Vibes always at a maximum with Bryce always a smile on her face a 69.66 good enough for third place here in this contest again if you're just joining us it's the return of women's skateboard vert at the X Games in front of a sellout crowd here in Ventura California get ready oh boy if you've never seen 10 year old Reese Nelson welcome to the show [Music] with more speed than anyone ever again switch Funtime people this is it this is what she came for okay grace is changing the game and bird skating in general [Applause] [Music] does she have any more laws left there the youngest competitor at X Games this weekend just 10 years old so Telegraph five she just learned that I don't know maybe in the last week or so and just throw it in the Run throw it as a setup for a no scrap five [Music] Reese is a machine so third place advert alert but first and best trick two years running first and best trick and we have a new leader the 10 year old Reese Nelson Takes Over the Top spot I hear uh Tony you drive around in the limo is that true only on special occasions when she's filming video Parts it's so nice of you and a huge Madonna I love the full extension on that Madonna it's just perfect it was just a little bit too low to pull back you'll hear me saying that a lot because I would say 80 of the field are making their X Games debut here today well you know there wasn't an opportunity to be here skating Bert a lot of these women do skate park really well so you may have seen them there but a lot of them can escape various terrains and Grace Marhofer you'll sometimes see your skating street she actually just won a street contest not too long ago ATVs here we go erisa true landed the first 720 by a female by a woman in competition just a couple weeks ago over alert and now I've seen her doing it in practice a lot she's never done it in a run in competition and that could be a groundbreaking moment here bodybuild five lean burial this is incredible here we go [Music] it's gonna be hard to get the right amount of speed for a 720 at this point in a run [Music] [Applause] so that's like a Frontline five with like a a safety tap that does not look safe it's not safe fresh off of first place finish at bird alert last month Arisa seemingly picking up right from there and how about we'll call this the uh front side five to uh high five Kobe high five does that work for you I like it I like it so she does get a run under her belt you think we can see that seven if she's got enough speed maybe earlier next run that's the hard part about seven especially when you've just learned them is you want to save it for last but it requires the most amount of speed so it requires the most energy so even without that seven orisa taking over the top spot no surprise there here's now Lily for run number two bird alert she got really close as well yeah her her only drawback is trying to get speed for it but she's definitely got the right spin [Music] I can't even describe how dangerous and scary that is she just stood up on top of the ramp that's death defying 15 minutes [Music] that is a scary place to be right there wow courage and a lot of time to ponder your fate a 67 so Lily improves her score under 18 minutes to skate with here in the Pacifica women's skateboard bird final Grace Marhofer eggplant just stalling it out for outside air disaster oh taking her foot off on that invert right now we go alley 550 Gamers trouble last time she gave herself more room on on this one but uh didn't hold on to it yeah when the ramp is that grippy it's hard to just like yeah that trick is uh deceiving because it seems like it should just work for you every time and then you find yourself without your board on the Kobe used to be solid one for nimbert there so that'll do it for Grace's second run hika Ventura oh I think she missed Juno missed her first run here's Juno out of Osaka Japan 12 years old watch closely for her back foot on her Rock and rolls oh yeah so so much style and smooth grinds too that's right she's got that rolls it over almost upside down nice kick with Indy wow coming in hot that first run wow welcome to the X kids Juno run two was her run one showing no nerve similia we actually saw her land her first melon five at exposure last year and it was a really good one and she's just loving life she's always got a positive attitude always great to talk to Total sweetheart imagine showing up late to the next team's finals and it's like um it's it's your turn it's your turn uh the Pacifica women's skateboard vert chilling watching the X Games I see that comment coming through what else would you be doing on this beautiful Saturday afternoon if you're not here at Ventura and if you're not you're blowing it but the next best thing watch on any screen you got so Juno putting down that run putting her up into third place here now hika Ventura huge Japan air to start she's got a lot of power skating looking good I think the judges are really going to appreciate her style the way she stands up on that Smith grinding especially how she's using the ramp laterally just getting away with that L twist oh no he gets stuck there though that's another thing with a sticky ramp going to Fakie out of a lip trick is going to be a bit more of a battle look at this Japan air it's straight off the rolling so much style good Landing too this was a little scary cat melon throwing it down at the last second staying on though it's cold outside under 14 minutes to skate with and now it's time for Dora Beret a second run trying to best her previous run score of a 69. [Music] [Applause] nice tailbone in the front set air Scout a really delicate landing on all of her tricks but she lands really high up on the ramp which helps her keep her speed huh just like that wow sitting next to me talking about the event stale fish Pop-Tart Amelia I said it all week we're we're fortunate to have you in the booth because you can very easily could have been up here with the rest of the ladies competing in this event I feel like you were talking about yourself delicate Landings well that's that's all you I mean I definitely do not have the bag of tricks that Dora does and I'm just grateful to be here watching this progression we're happy to have you it's incredible so if you're just joining us we're in the midst of run two here in the Pacifica women's skateboard bird final larusa true came correct on her first run leading the way but the story so far might be 10 year old Reese Nelson right behind her here now though Ruby Lily sitting in fit [Music] showing off that beautiful nose grind that lean disaster [Music] but you know you still have to get the snap and you need enough speed to do a trick like that but it's everything you have just to stay on the ramp that's right and she was saying that she actually hasn't been practicing birth that much recently she's been spending a lot of her time in park and just this whole week by the time the vert practices starts he's exhausted yeah and it's hot out here it's a lot to maintain your energy just through the week a 72.33 for Ruby this sell-out crowd enjoying what they're seeing here in the Pacifica women's skateboard bird final and I know you guys are navigating this place just like I am there are so many people I thought it was going to take me I don't know two minutes to get over here now make it like 22. here's my secret I went around the perimeter that's you I went off site I came all the way around you you need to do that for different reasons but I'm just trying to get here as quickly as I can here's Bryce website dropping in for her second run I went to Bryce's concert last weekend and her ukulele and vocal skills are absolutely beautiful you gotta check her out on Spotify [Music] these tricks up on the lip it's not you know you know they're so difficult just right there like the big yellow truck bash Summit disaster there's no stopping just let her get in results is going on here just keep going Bryce just keep going is that a bean plant disaster [Applause] [Music] all the ladies of women's skateboard showing support [Music] for this historical bird comp I hope we see that faking nose pic now maybe maybe next time in the slow-mo well let's head up to the fourth member of our team Corbin Harris what's happening Corbin hey Brenda let me tell you right now this crowd is electrifying we're 25 000 people deep as Rhys Nelson is dropping into back-to-back fight 540s I'm gonna hand it back to you guys Tony's honestly got something to say I'm tongue tied she calls that the breakfast Burger she made it up she gets to name it we go what else [Applause] 10 years old her trick selection is off the charts and difficulty you know she skates with Colin McKay a lot and uh I think that's yeah it definitely shows we're not just watching a 10 year old at the X Games we are watching a 10 year old dominate right there that trick she made it up kickflip roast beef what's it called breakfast yeah is it a breakfast Burger in three tries we didn't want anything to do with roast beef it's too Tangled we have a new leader Reese Nelson taking over amazing the youngest competitor Amelia Tony I knew this young girl was special and was primed for a bright bright future but right here right now on this stage she's been working I mean she has been working on that line for weeks she delivered so here's kahara sitting in tenth place so she gave up on that it's usually a kickflip Andy right there in her life but she's got it yep there it is [Applause] she's got a really great style and a lot of power so much power yeah and just even the smallest tweak looks great it's gonna be interesting to make that I mean I'd hate to be a judge right now we just saw Rhys we saw Asahi a very different styles very different bags of tricks you know it's kind of might turn into a power versus technicality battle that extension on the Madonna all the way and then this I love that she has such confidence to catch it even when it's not as high as would be optimal huge score for guy Hara at 81 Putting her up into that bronze medal position all right so what does Teresa true do she wants that 720 at the end of her run I think that's what it's gonna take will she have the speed and when will she put it down Tony gotta do it at the end cause it's a risky move I've kind of told people those vibes are face High huge switch front set air oh front's like cap grab here we go incredible [Applause] [Music] it's so tricky to judge that against what Reese is doing like if she makes that run I don't know how you really delineate between all those tricks Teresa says her favorite skateboarder is Moto shabbata she said she studies the way he pumps and carves and uses the Rollins for extra speed wow and we are flying here in this Pacifica women's skateboard bird vinyl alrighty run three here's Lily sitting in Ninth Place all right stalefish oh this is so frightening I love that she went for it again that is a banger of a trick for sure sit up there like that yeah I mean I I guess in her eyes that makes it easier for her to prepare to the re-entry right very different than anything any of us no no this one is like get me out of here Grace marhold for trying to put something down here on run three nice [Music] another egg no just those last few walls give her trouble she might get another run she doesn't actually skate a lot of birds she's just she's incredibly talented but has the burnt opportunities Amelia present themselves and back here on the world's biggest stage so will her skating and so will so many more participants on the women's side come through it's true that's why it's so important to have events like these create that opportunity so here's Juno if you're just joining us uh she was nowhere to be seen on her first run but just came out firing on her second and right now she's just outside of the top three [Applause] I love that she lands bolts and then has to readjust but she lands bolts every time [Applause] clearly she did not need all of those runs maybe that was the strategy I'm just gonna skip one so I don't burn out I appreciate it what a show so far from Juno matoka look at that backflip wow just on the top like literally on the toast top side of the toe this one like coming off her tail 73.66 so she'll hold on to her second run a little bit oh excellent [Music] sold out for women's finals very high yes Timothy wow so here's haika wow that was another Hail Mary there I hope that people at home can understand that haika brings a different type of power to this ramp than some of this field it's a really great style yeah that's a really good point Amelia yeah here are uh bringing the air time absolutely Dora Berea her best run score 71. and it's been that type of contest at 71 good enough for only eight fights so far yes [Music] shout out to Karen Jones who's one of the first to do that I feel like she just learned that one too right she did that's the best trick yeah that's why the best trick contests are so key as well and with General most of us approach best trick on it's like I want to do this trick and never do it again and these girls are like I want to do that trick and then keep doing it forever yeah and incorporate it into my room yeah it's a great incentive to land a trick that you're scared of so under a minute to skate with here's Ruby Lily really great Style [Music] it's harder to get that around yeah generally you're you're aiming you won't aim for your tail because that keeps your back foot on you don't want to aim for a disaster Trail slide finish it out nicely styling super solid flomo [Music] 72.33 for Ruby Lily no movement in the standings for her Bryce wetstein sitting in sixth and if you're just joining us uh don't let that 30 seconds fool you Bryce is gonna go over time I love how fast one trying to step up that run or maybe she's not even thinking about it too good position I mean you've got to when it's gone for sure absolutely at some point there's a risk to your own Heights it's a good point a Podium threat in park a strong Surfer a musician Bryce wetstein truly does it all how about Rhys Nelson making X Games history she's our current leader what could she do under potentially her final run see her front foot come off a little bit yes breakfast Burger either [Music] is that her last run The Audacity Of This 10 year old to do what she's doing any metal here would make her the youngest medalist in X Games history that kick with no slot is actually what won her the best trick at bird alert except she did it over the channel I mean why not you're gonna slide eight feet you might as well to go over the Gap third run here in the Pacifico women's skateboard bird final it was a huge Madonna looking all the way extended [Music] looking good she even tweaks Nikki Ali shove its tail fish we have not seen that one yet I didn't even see her make that a practice one side nose blood wow what are the judges gonna think that was a victory kick turn right there amazing with the pulse check mid run two at her execution of all of these tricks is absolutely Flawless so this is true Style on display here gonna be an interesting toss-up for the judges how do they compare that to some of the technicality that we've seen tricky I think that could put her in third possibly yeah already in third and improves upon her score yes and with that if these are final runs that would guarantee her a battle because the last skater to drop in would be Arisa true oh my gosh this could be the moments could be history right here I'll barely getting that around her feet were not in position to make that she's got more speed on this run so far [Applause] [Music] [Applause] true on the final run of the contest in front of a sell-out crowd a contest nvd here at DX games I mean we saw her trying that run every time in practice and did see her make seven twenties a few times so we knew she had it but like you said Tony just throw it in your run it requires so much power look at this this body Barrel just her back foot was just not in prime location I'm pretty sure where she landed that that was the mark where it's like I'm doing a 720 if I can make that with my feet messed up I can make a seven and she came out of it with speed she's got that Top Spin but she knows how to fix it at the end wow dragging her hand a bit maybe oh just squatting it out in X Games mode no doubt about that Arisa true is she able to take away gold from Rhys Nelson on the final run here in the Pacifico women's skateboard vert there you see both skaters tomorrow and she does it a 90.33 Arisa true is your gold medalist I don't even know that if she was alive at the last vert contest here at X Games for women's Bert she's only 13. this is the new generation amazing what a moment for Arisa what a moment for women's skateboarding and for vert in general here at the X Games so excited exciting Arisa saving her absolute best for last a history-making moment a history-making event here at X Games [Music] here we go just snap right here and with her being top heavy but the way that she fixes it with the squat and didn't even drag her hand no she wanted to she was tempted to but she's like nah I'm gonna just ride this one out wow the the level of control to hang on to that so gang our Podium by the way the youngest ever average age Podium 13-year six months is the average between these three skateboarders the future is now Arisa true claims gold in the return of women's skateboard bird wow what a moment and what a way to close out that contest in front of a sell-out crowd here at X Games California
