[Music] thanks for joining the DIY collaborative today today we'll be going over how to repair a leaking outdoor faucet that was busted from recent freeze damage here is the suspect in question and basically what happened when the homeowner would turn on the water you can see here that the water is actually coming out from behind the faucet and this is the inside of the homeowners garage first you'll want to locate the shut-off for the main water supply to the home and in this case it's in the water meter box out by the street when you open up the water meter box it should be in this position this is showing that the water supply is actually on to the building you'll want to take a crescent wrench or a water meter shutoff tool if you have one and actually turn this valve towards across the water supply line or the inlet line coming in from the main supply line going to the home this valve may be a little bit difficult to turn but persistence will eventually pay off and this is showing that the water supply is off ok once you've got the water supply off to the building you'll want to return to the faucet that you're working on go ahead and disconnect that hose and open up the faucet to let the remaining water drain out and the pressure drain off of the line we'll be taking an adjustable pipe wrench in this case and using that to basically unscrew the faucet from the wall where it was actually leaking and in this case you know it may have been a little bit of time since this has been taken out and you'll just want to apply a bit of constant pressure and maybe support the end of the actual faucet with your other hand until it starts to turn as you can see in this case it's actually started to unscrew and in this case you'll also see that there was a bit of mortar in the way that had probably been built up after this was installed that's preventing it from being turned and in this case the homeowner was actually able to chip a little bit of that mortar away it doesn't take much enough just to clear the flange so it will turn and unscrew from the threads where it's actually screwed in to the plumbing to the supply line it looks like he's got it all cleared out now and he'll return back with the adjustable pipe wrench and finish loosening it until it actually unscrews from the wall [Music] now you can see he's actually got a ton threaded and he's removing it from the wall and a quick visual inspection sure Neff shows where the pipe was actually busted from freezing this is where it was leaking inside of the wall here's another shot of that crack in the pipe where the water actually froze and expanded and busted out the pipe now in our case we were not able to immediately locate a replacement freeze proof faucet valve setup because of the recent run of these in our area due to the recent freeze that we had so in order to get the water supply turned back on to the home we're actually just installing a temporary fix and in this shot we're using a joint compound on the threads which you'll want to do either that or teflon tape to make sure that it doesn't leak and we're simply installing a 1/2 inch by 8 inch nipple pipe and just a standard faucet again to where the homeowner will be able to have the water turned back on to the home because right now when we shut the water off at the street to the to do the repair it shut the water off to the entire home so this is why we're having to do this because we were not able to locate the correct parts but this will suffice for the time being here David is actually inserting the pipe back in to the the socket or the receptacle where it goes and he's going to tighten that up again using the wrench you're not going to over tighten you don't want to strip these threads out or anything or bust the actual connection but you just you know you want to make sure that it's actually typed and here he's using an adjustable crescent wrench to do that tightening with he's got it pretty tight and then he goes ahead and and turns it around one more time until it's lined up to where he could use it if he had to here is the new 4-inch freezeproof faucet that we'll be installing at this location I hope this video helped you I want to give a shout out to David at gallops gadgets who was actually doing this repair in the video and we appreciate you watching if you're not comfortable doing these repairs please call a licensed plumber to come out and take care of you once again I appreciate you watching if you like the video please give us a thumbs up and please consider subscribing to the DIY collaborative channel we've got a lot of other helpful videos tips and tricks that you might find interesting thanks
