well thank you everybody for joining us I'm father Chris AAR here at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy a beautiful day and we're excited that you could be with us um I was just telling our group here at the shrine earlier that um it seems like all all the time I'm saying to myself um wow why did I do this talk earlier um and today we're doing our Lady of Perpetual Help on the first Saturday and as you could see from the cover uh slide that we had on the talk it is a very well-known image next to AR lady Guadalupe probably the most known icon um of the Blessed Mother in the entire church so this is a very important icon a very important meeting and we're going to stay stay with us I'm going to give you a little bit of the history don't want you falling asleep that'll be short but then we are going to walk through every aspect of this image the Greek what it says what it means who the angels are what they're holding why Jesus's sandal is falling off of his foot very interesting stuff and so we want to know the understanding of what the church has taught us about this image and why it's miraculous and so we're glad that you could be with us so let us begin with a prayer in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen Heavenly Father we ask you send the Holy Spirit down upon us and mother Mary uh this day after your visitation we ask that you come to visit us and especially through this image uh in the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help that you will intercede for us and help us in this Earthly pilgrimage and we ask all this through Christ Our Lord amen amen name of the father son and of the Holy holy spirit amen I just want to uh say a couple quick things before we begin so thank you first of all for prayers for my father um it's it's been a a an amazing journey uh seeing him with his faith and and near death and and now coming back fully uh to the church I know that's why the Lord is prolonging him the help of your prayers um I got a call on Thursday morning that he wasn't going to make it the next 48 hours and uh I I I really knew that I had to get home so I had Peter get ready to cancel my events which were down in um New Jersey at the Catholic Expo with Bishop coffee it was a beautiful event and then from there racing up yesterday to amazing thing you might not know of uh St Edmund's art sacred art institute which is uh they have an exhibit now going on at the uh mcgivney Museum the former mcgivney Museum in in uh New Haven anyway so I was like Lord please help me by locate um and so um I got a call then on Thursday miraculously as I was getting ready to go to the airport to cancel all the events go home see my father that he had stabilized and so that made it able for me to come do the events uh last night as well and the last couple days and come back here today to see you and and I know the reason is Our Lady of Perpetual Help she's coming up June 27th so this is why we're doing this talk here on the first Saturday of June because her feast day is June 27th so this is so important of all the Maran titles this is probably the most popular and and you've seen one form of this image or another I'm I'm I'm sure you have and so let's have brother Mark show the next several slides all right so the next slide this is the most famous known of our lady with a golden background this is Our Lady of Perpetual Help you can see on your screen and then let's have Mark go to the second slide this is a bluish much more vibrant um with a blue kind of a background you may see this version of our Lady a Perpetual Help then if Mark goes to the next slide you see there's also kind of this greenish version of uh our lady we're going to talk about all of this and then go to the next slide you even have statues of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and you could see that most common form of that Our Lady of Perpetual Help and so several versions of paintings and even statues exist now the universal appeal of this centers on our identity as children of Mary when we think of Mary as our mother we turn to help to her for help like we would our own mother intercessory the meaning on this image is fascinating and and and again I'm going to tell you a little history here to start but then I'm going to tell you all the meaning of the image and and what it signifies and what it's about uh it's it's really fascinating and so this was also known as Our Lady of Perpetual sakur um which again is celebrated on June 27th and the devotion revolves around the picture this picture was painted on wood with a background of gold okay and that's significant we'll get to it now this is Byzantine okay this is Byzantine in style and it was supposed to have been painted around the 13th century okay now it represents Mary holding the divine child so um this is uh an example and uh maybe brother Mark can go back up to the last image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help before the statue and the people here in the shrine you can look at this I know the picture is not big but we'll do our best so Mary is holding the divine child while the archangels are present now who are the Angels okay so you have St Michael you have St Michael here on the left okay this is St Michael and um on the right is Gabriel now what are they holding they're presenting Jesus the instruments of his passion this is what they're holding so we're going to talk more about this in a minute what instruments are they what is Michael holding what is Gabriel holding okay now over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters which form a meaning so if you can see us here at the shrine here we have the letters on the left Greek letters on the right so here we have letters on the left this is the Greek letters letters on the right that stands for Mary's title Mother of God okay and so over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters which are abbreviated words for Mother of God now we also have next to the Christ child we have letters those are the Greek for Jesus the Christ okay so we see this word here in Greek is next to the Child Jesus which in Greek means Jesus the Christ that is the lettering that is on uh in the Greek okay so now we have the Angels Michael and above Michael we see the lettering of his name this is Michael and then over the right we have the letter for Gabriel okay and so this is the meaning of the image they are presenting him his instruments of his passion and so here we have the significance of the Greek writing now the icon was brought to Rome towards the end of the 15th century okay by a merchant from CIT who was dying now they found out later he stole the image but our later our lady in uh intervened so anyway he ordered that the picture should be exposed in a church for public veneration all right so it was exposed in the Church of St Matthew Mato right in Rome and this was on the street that connects the basilicas of St Mary major and St John Lin it's very important those are two of the major basilicas now crowd s came for nearly 300 years many Graces and we'll talk about this in a minute came from our lady's intercession so the picture was then popularly called the Madonna D San Mato of St Matthew and the church was served for a Time by the Hermits of St Augustine now here's where it gets interesting these Augustine augustinians were there when the French invaded Rome in the late 17 and early 1800s and they destroyed the church and that's something France the first daughter of the church they destroyed it and so the picture disappeared remained hidden and neglected for almost 50 years but then here's what happened some circumstances in the 1860s they rediscovered it in an oratory there at the augustinian fathers in a parish of Santa Mar poera now here Pas the9th who was a boy at the time prayed before the image in San Mato St Matthews and became interested now that he was Pope in this discovery but at the time the ruins of that destroyed Church which the French destroyed of San Mato were on the grounds of this Covenant of the redemptorists Now who is the founder of the Redemptorist St alonsus Lor so they decided to bring the whole matter to the pope here's what happened the pope felt it was God's will that the icon should be publicly venerated and The Logical sight of their church was to be was St alonsus on that same road that connected St Mary major and St John lerin okay so it's on the same road that was the pilgrimage place in Rome the main pilgrimage place and so the Pope ordered the augustinian fathers of St Mary and Pastor roua to surrender the picture to the redemptorists on the condition that the Redemptorist would Supply the augustinians with another picture of our lady or a good copy of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Now what happened so the icon meant a lot to the augustinians but when the two redemptorists came to get it there was a major scuffle and so they had to get the Pope's memorandum signed to force them to get the image so this is how important it was now where is it today on January 19th 1866 this miraculous image was brought to where it is now let's go to our next slide St alonsus Church in Rome that's a picture of the church you see on your screen and this is where it is today so where is it in the church let's go to our next slide Upon returning uh to the church the picture was put over the high altar what a beautiful picture you can see there of the high altar where the image is portrayed now or I should say displayed now the report of all kinds of healings spread so rapidly the healings began to spread throughout Rome people came far and wide pretty soon the whole area around the altar was filled with abandoned crutches canes and a lot of cabinets filled with offerings in the shapes of miniature Hearts arms legs other vo of offerings only Catholics right and so Pas the 9th the boy the guy when he was a little boy that stood and imaged in front of the image stood before the image once they put it in the church and just in awe of how beautiful it was this is how we know it's authentic listen to this not just Pi the 9th Leo the 13th he sent um he had a copy of the picture on his desk so he could see it throughout the day Pi I 10th sent a copy of the icon to the Empress of Ethiopia and granted an Indulgence to anyone who repeated the phrase mother of of Perpetual Help pray for us so mother of Perpetual Help pray for us and so Pope Benedict Pope Benedict the 15th had a picture of our Lady placed over his chair in uh in his room uh pas I 9th told the Redemptorist make her known so in the United States they built the first Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the country guess where right here in Massachusetts in Boston in the rockberry section of Boston and then that was made a Papal Basilica by Pas I 12 okay so enough of the history let's get into the symbolism of what this means okay now there's a lot of influence uh for us as Catholics of Eastern icons here in the West very powerful what's an icon an icon is a window uh a door into eternity that's why the figures are sometimes skewed like Jesus have a real long hooked foot or a perfectly circular head which isn't reality for us here on Earth but the icon is a window into eternity all right and so around the 12th and the 13th centuries um there was a class of icons called carda from the Greek word meaning cardia which means heart okay so cardo Tia means having a heart or showing sympathy and mercy and compassion and so in them the face of our Lady appears full of Sorrow full of Sorrow yet supremely dignified in her contemplation of the sufferings of her son so let's look at this now as I mentioned you can see in this image the archangels Michael and Gabriel in the upper Corners holding the instruments of passion so now Michael in the left corner is holding a spear in one in his hand it's a spear and on the other in his hand he's holding a a pole with something on the top what's on top of that is the wine soaked sponge that that was given to um uh Jesus to drink when he was on the cross now in some of the versions he's also has the crown of thorns okay our particular version doesn't have it but many do now on the other side St Gabriel on the right corner he is holding the cross and the nails you can see the little nails coming up now their hands are covered with a protecting Veil now why would they be holding this instruments but a veil is over their hands that is because it was the sign of reverence in handling sacred objects sacred objects okay now the Child Jesus has an adult face that's always kind of spooky to people isn't it now that shows his Divine mind of infinite intelligence he's an adult in that sense as God he knew that the Angelic apparitions of his passion were coming but yet in his human nature he's like a little child so the reason reason why you see Jesus in these icons looking like he's a little boy but he looks like an adult like a little mini like a mini Jesus and the reason is they give him an adult features in the face because he's infinitely wise infinite intelligence he knows everything but yet he's a child in his innocence in his human nature as a small child and guess what's happen happening in this image he is frightened and runs to his mother for protection and so our lady is picking him up and clasping him to her booom so Jesus is afraid here in his human nature that's why he can empathize with us now what is the first thing he did when he was afraid in his human nature he ran to his mother and so our lady picks him up takes him to her booom now in this image the Child Jesus has lost his sandal okay so his sandal is dangling from his foot it's hanging and so which has led some to interpret that the depicted Child Jesus here ran with haste to the arms of his mother so fast that his sandal slipped off now have you ever heard that before I've seen this image so many times I never knew that was the reason until I was researching it in the car last night and so this is fascinating to me and so this is this action is indicated by the fact that the Lord's right foot is kind of like nervously curled around his left ankle and and the scholars and the theologians said it was done in such haste that his right sandal became loosened and is hanging by a single strap because he rushed so fast into the arms of our lady and I want wow that's that's really amazing and so further action is indicated by the way the Child Jesus claps clasps to his mother's right hand now I know this image is small up here and after the talk you can come up and see it and um if you're watching the talk online you can go back uh where we showed the images earlier um if Mark isn't able to show him now that's okay but Jesus is clasping his mother's right hand with both of his hands and he's actually holding on tightly to her thumb and so here's what what's interesting about that um the fact is he's putting himself in her hands both of his hands are put into hers that's showing us you can trust her I'm trusting her I'm putting myself into her hands you can too and so I think this is very significant now our lady has two colors uh underneath her mantle she has a dress of dark red which was in the Byzantine world for an empress a queen this would indicate the queenship of Mary all right now some of the theologians who talk about color also claim that the bluish color that she has like the purple um came as a well here's actually interesting her mantle is blue right we know Mary as wearing blue but why do we wear purple in Lent and Advent because purple the color of penance in the west during lanton Advent is a combination of blue and red so this is interesting our lady is wearing red which symbolizes the queen she wears the blue um that mixed with red forms a purple that's why we wear purple in the church now the blue why does Mary wear blue it's a sign of Heaven which is what we try to arrive by our Penance so think about this again Mary's wearing a red dress red represents the queen in the Byzantine world she also has blue on the outer which represents Heaven you mix them together you get purple the church wears purple because purple is the sign of penance which is needed to get you to heaven a beautiful connection here and the red also recalls martyrdom because all Penance requires a dying to our self especially mortifying inordinate desire for like food and pleasure now the archangels we talked about Michael on the left and Gabriel on the right are wearing tunics of purple since they carry the instruments of The Passion of the death of Christ now the figures of the icon as I said before are uh identified with abbreviations there's two on the top those are for the name of Mary Mother of God her title and our lady's face is actually very Majestic all right it's comb you notice she has large eyes that are partly Clos closed uh really showing kind of sorrow and sympathy now she's not looking at Jesus who is she looking at us to express compassion compassion for us in our fear and sorrow and so this is a very important image um very very important now there's a good article by this Teresa Barber that I was reading uh Chris Bark's Senate uh and it talks about the three reasons that you need to have an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help the most common image in the church she said one it helps us to understand Mary's role okay let's talk about this in the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help the baby Jesus is frightened he fle into her arms so if God himself can seek the comfort from the holiest of women can it remind you to do the same it should I thought that was very good the second reason you need to have this image in your home is it's a source of a company accompanyment now tradition holds that the young Jesus is frightened in this image because he sees a vision of his future passion Mary and how does he see that again the angels are bringing the tools the nails the cross the spear now Mary reassures this frightened Child Jesus with her actions and just her presence now she's not going to stop the passion she's not going to stop it I think I told the story once before where I came running into the house because uh when you're in third grade a fifth grader is so much bigger stronger and just more developed and I got whooped up on pretty good by a fifth grader and I was in third grade and I came running in the house crying crying and I thought my mom was going to grab her arms around me and I thought that she was going to just you know coddle me and and the fact that she was just there meant a lot to me but she didn't stop it she didn't she didn't stop it she she said what are you going to do about it I'm a third grader and and and so I think Mary is in a way kind of doing the same thing here she wasn't going to stop the passion of Jesus but she was going to be with him and I knew when I went back out of that house even though my mom wasn't going to stop this neighborhood kid she was going to be there with me when I came back Mary never left the side of Jesus even in his passion so accompanyment and so when we look at this image it feels like we can hear our lady saying yes it's going to be very hard I'm not going to stop it but I'm going to be with you you don't have to do it alone there was a sad comment on one of our YouTube comments I was reading also on the car on the way home talking about how God and Mary don't care uh because their prayers weren't answered I can understand that I get that I've felt that way in my life before too but sometimes God's answer is no and it's a better answer for us but in no way did God ever abandon us my mom's answer when I told her to go beat up the neighbor kid my mom's answer was no but I knew she was there with me and Mary is too same with at Jesus with him at the foot of the cross now she remained with him at his side the during the entire passion offering support to console him simply by being there so when you are going through your toughest of times have this image in your house and even though it doesn't seem like God may be doing everything to fix your problems you'll know that they're with you and that suffering can be Redemptive uh tomorrow I'm doing a retreat in Palmer Massachusetts and so the retreat at Palmer Massachusetts is about how can we find any meaning in suffering how can God allow this a lot of them have been victims of suicide lost loved ones to suicide and so um this is a ag old question and so Mary walks beside us when we are carrying our crosses all right she abides with us she's near us offering her support and her love and we can be consoled just by the fact that she's there her presence as Christ was both as a child and as a man that's why the image is shown to in that way all right and third it offers joyful hope this image of course the passion is not the end of the story The Resurrection is the resurrection came after all the hardship so there's no Easter Sunday without Good Friday we'll go through it ourselves so Christ in this image also wears a crown showing that he is the king of Heaven and Earth and so that's a reminder that whatever crosses we bear they're just finite they're temporal of this world what will last forever is the glory of Christ the Reign his reign as King For Eternity and so this is why we see in this image that that portrayed and we see the evidence of this in many of the Miracles of our Lady of Perpetual Help um because it's a first Saturday I don't have time to do all the stories of the Miracles but we can Rejoice we can have hope knowing that Christ has won the victory our job minimize casualties don't let let ourselves or our loved ones be lost to the evil one before Christ comes to claim the victory he already has won the victory but the souls we have to protect help Lord to bring them to Salvation all right so before we get to the most important slide where I'm going to watch walk through the entire image again I want to finish by saying the icon conveys the Triumph of Christ over sin and death that's why it has a gold background I would suggest to you you get the one with the gold background even though there's beautiful ones for prettiness the blue and the green the gold symbolizes the glory of the resurrection and so the manner in which the Angels hold the instruments does too because they're they're showing them as almost this is kind of crazy but this is what the theologians say almost like trophies gathered up from Calvary on Easter morning they're the trophies of Christ's Victory what do you get when you well today everybody gets a trophy okay um but in my day if you actually won you got a trophy and so in Christ the victory is won those instruments are now like his trophy the victory has been won again our job today is not to quit because the victory one but to help minimize the casualties all right so now Christ seeks comfort from his mother as he sees the instruments of his passion he's very scared that's his Humanity his human nature and so the position of Mary's hands are interesting too by holding the Child Jesus as I said seems like a small adult and presenting him to us this conveys the reality of our Lord's Incarnation that he is true God but also fearful so true man that's why Jesus said in the garden Lord let this cup Pass Me By but what did he say after that not my will be done your will be done all right so in iconography Mary is represented as the hodi gria this is the one who guides us to the Redeemer that's her job so she is is our help to get to the Redeemer who intercedes on our behalf with her son to get us there hence the name Our Lady of Perpetual Help all right so now I'm going to finish with the most important slide of all and I know the text is small on your screen and some of you who are here if you don't have your phone that's okay this will be posted on our website and I'm going to have brother markk put this up it's it's a little small text and we're going to hold it up on the screen for a while here as I walk through it and so as mother as brother Mark shows it on the screen I'm going to be pointing to adhere to you here um in the uh in the uh Shrine so that um you can see what it is and I'm going to walk through this image and Mark's going to show the screen up on the thing let's start on the left hand side of the screen scen and it starts with number six number six is a pointing to the star on the forehead of Mary okay number six up on the leftand corner is pointing to the star of Mary can everybody see this okay that star on our lady's Veil means that she is the Star of the Sea who brought the light of Jesus into the world how does sailor see at night the star the light of the star and Mary is the Star of the Sea she shows the the light okay let's go to the next one number four number four points down to Mary's mouth now Mary has a little teeny tiny mouth boy I wish God would have given me that um Mary's mouth is small for silent recollection she doesn't speak much she speaks very little this is what our Lord teaches us and tells us so in number four you see Mary's mouth very little she it's small silent reflection speaking very little all right let's go to the next one number two number two is the Greek initials for St Michael the Archangel and these are right here over St Michael you see the Greek for the image or excuse me for the uh lettering of the name of St Michael so on the graph on your screen that is number two the Greek initials for St Michael the arch angel now let's go to number seven number seven is pointing to her red dress this red tunic underneath right here you see the red the red tunic okay this red tunic is the color one by the Virgin at the time of Christ or worn by a virgin and so um bre was at the time of Christ worn by virgins and so she is a virgin that's number seven now let's go down to number 10 number 10 is the dark blue mantle so if if you can see here at the shrine this is the dark blue mantle this is the color worn by mothers in Palestine and Mary therefore is both a virgin and a mother red for Virgin at at the time of Christ blue for mother at the time of Christ she is both a virgin and a mother all right the final one on the left hand side is number 11 and this right here is the entire background is gold see the background here is gold and that represents Heaven the victory the resurrection all right let's go to the other side of this image again I apologize for this small text but number one points to the meaning of our Lady basically the Greek initials again of our Lady the mother of God so it's in two places top left top right the mother of God and so that is the Greek so that's pointing in number one to the two first top Greek letters all right the Greek initials for mother of god let's go down to number 12 this is the Golden Crown placed on the original picture as a token of many miracles wrought by our lady invoked under the title of Perpetual Help and so if you look on the image she is wearing a crown she has the crown all right so let's go down to number five number five Mary's eyes are very large in in in all it's very interesting because her eyes are larger for in all our troubles they are turned towards us so if you look at Mary's eyes they're looking at you not even Jesus they're looking at you now that means oh well father you're saying Mary took her eyes off of Jesus no she's holding Jesus but she's looking at you and so five her eyes are large and she's looking at you all right so let's go down to the next one number three this is the Greek initial for Gabriel the archangel and so the lettering right above the the little angel of Greek of um Gabriel is the Greek initials for St Gabriel so that's number three on the image let's go to number 13 on the image that's the Greek initials for Jesus the Christ so on our image right here it's right here this image has Jesus as as uh portrayed and next to him is the Greek that's the Greek lettering for Jesus the Christ all right so let's go to number eight number eight points to her hand and Christ's hands are turned Palms down into his mother's indoc um in turned down into his mother's which indicate the grace of redemption is in her keeping basically he's entrusting himself to the hands of Mary his hands are in Mary's hands he's entrusting himself to the hands of Mary and so should we and so that's number eight on the image two more number nine points to Mary's other hand Mary's left hand so right here supports Christ possessively all right that means she is his mother it is comforting that her hand is comforting him and for everyone who calls on her so you too can put yourself in her hands Jesus did that's good enough for me and the last one is number 14 the infamous sandal if you can see on the image basically the foot with a falling sandal this represents Christ's divine nature barely clinging to Earth the human nature is symbol ized in the other foot to which the sandal is more F firmly bound this simply means that Christ has two Natures human and divine and so if you want to look at this image again um uh please uh show it again if you wish to study it you can pause it on your YouTube I apologize again for the very small print uh but hopefully that was able to come up on your screen screen and for those of you here you can come up and see this image again I apologize for that being small but um you can come up and see it so our lady in giving us this help um this Perpetual Help which means never ending um we can turn to her like the Christ child did to be able to give us that strength of perseverance just knowing that she is near that's why we're here today that's why we honor our lady not worship but we honor her and we run to her for protection and Jesus did the same thing so hence she helps us to get to her son hence Our Lady of Perpetual Help amen amen don't forget our lady and that's why we Mar and fathers are focused on bringing you to Christ as best we can through the hands of our Lady and here you have it in this image literally scene and again you see this image everywhere it's one of the most famous images in Christianity and um I think so powerful and hopefully that meaning helps explain a little bit more for you and so as before we go I just like to show a couple quick slides um this one I hav't put up in a while become a mar and helper um if you'd like to join us in our Maran family we'd love to have you mic prayers.org um join us it doesn't cost anything if you can't ever donate that's fine but you get The Graces you get The Graces as if we were uh you were a marry and priest or brother uh and that's by decree of the Holy sea so you don't um you know you always talk about this particular talk or that particular talk and I can never find it um father can you put something together on a DVD and we did that for the first few but now what we decided to do is create uh this little bracelet it's called a slap bracelet and and um Jackie was slapping yesterday all the people in the at the conference because it's a really handy way that it goes right around your wrist and you can carry with you so it's a it has all of our talks everyone of my explaining the faith talks so 158 talks are on here and you can just slap it around your wrist and you can download from it you can carry your faith at your fingertips or your wrist and at the end of it is uh a USB port and that USB port you can download on your computer send it to your phone so you can listen to it if you exercise or walk and a lot of people told me when they exercise they they listen to it and so uh we hope that you'll get it and this is available as you can see on your screen um it's uh available uh on shop mercy.org and the keyword is USB and um if you want to order you can call us at 8004 Maran that's 46274 26 so we're trying as best we can as Marans um and I tell you what I'll say it again you can't afford it but it'll help you in your faith I'll give it to you for free I I I really feel strongly about this I I take to heart the criticism that we're just we're just you know out to make money no we don't make a penny off of YouTube um our products we are sold just so that we can eat and and be able to have clothing I don't think you'd appreciate me up here without a clothing on um uh you know we need insurance as as you guys uh do because it's important that we try to stay healthy uh we have to have the lights on we have to pay our bills and so yes these all help us to do that this is true but I am about not to say I won't give it to you for free if you can't afford it or you really want it and you really will listen to it our number one goal is to get you to heaven and that's what that's what our job as Marans is so praise be to God that we are together in this Mission so now let's finish brother Mark is going to ramp this down and in a few minutes look for uh the new uh uploaded um live stream that we will begin the first Saturday devotions of what our lady asked us to do to fulfill the request of Heaven on the first Saturdays God bless you for
