The sci-fi spectacular scooped three of the four top acting prizes. Michelle Yeoh won the best actress award for her leading role as a working mom who must save the multiverse. - For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. - She's the first Asian woman to win the top acting category. Her costars, Ke Huy Quan -- -Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive. - And Jamie Lee Curtis also became first-time Oscar winners. - To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I have made for all these years, the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, we just won an Oscar! - The film also won best original screenplay and best film editing. And Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert shared the award for best director. As for the other winners, Brendan Fraser took home best actor for "The Whale," finishing his comeback awards season on a high note. - I started in this business 30 years ago, and things, they didn't come easily to me, but there was a facility that I didn't appreciate at the time. - Ruth Carter won best costume design for her work on "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." This was Carter's second Oscar for her costume work on the "Black Panther" series, making her the first Black woman to win two Academy Awards. - Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. - The Oscars have a history of shutting women out of major categories, noted by Sarah Polley when she won best adapted screenplay for "Women Talking." - First of all, I just want to thank the Academy for not being mortally offended by the words "women" and "talking" put so close together like that. Cheers. - "All Quiet on the Western Front" had a winning streak. The German-language Netflix film won for best cinematography, production design, and international feature. - Blockbuster movies "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Top Gun: Maverick" had a more modest showing, picking up awards for visual effects and sound design. The evening was also full of musical performances -- [up-tempo music playing] From Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick" -- ♪ So cry tonight ♪ ♪ But don't you let go of my hand ♪ -To Rihanna's first live performance of "Lift Me Up." ♪ Lift me up ♪ ♪ Hold me down ♪ -The prize for best original song ultimately went to "Naatu Naatu" from "RRR," the first song from an Indian film to win in this category. The 2023 Oscars were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the third time. He made a handful of references to the previous year's most memorable moment. - If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the ceremony, just do what you did last year -- nothing. Sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug.
