hey do you want to learn more about the oru coast 16-foot touring kayak it weighs only 34 pounds it's in this box i'm going to take it apart put it together and show you everything about the oru coast [Music] hey it's kayak cliff i'm here today i want to talk to you about the oru coast touring kayak about a year ago i reviewed for you the oru bay 12 foot touring kayak and the uru bay is the little cousin to the oro coast it's a 12 foot sit inside version smaller touring kayak but today let's talk about the coast this kayak is something that i've really grown to like and appreciate there's a lot of great attributes about this kayak that may fit into many of your lifestyles that you have in the kayaking community so the oru bay i mean the oru coast which i'm holding right here is a 16 foot touring kayak the bay was a 12 foot version a lot smaller more for smaller water more of a day kayak the coast is a true touring 16-foot kayak that allows you to get out into big water to do expeditions to go camping but it also folds up into the same size box that the 12 footer folds up into which is great because it allows you to check it on airlines throw it in the back of your hatchback put it underneath your bed or in your closet but 34 pounds base weight and it has get this 400 pound payload capacity now that's the peddler and the gear so you can really reach out there for several days on a campout expedition with the oaru kayak if after watching this video if you think an uru is for you click on my affiliate link in the description box and enter coupon code kayak cliff to get an additional 10 percent off your purchase of your oru kayak now my oru coast 16 foot kayak is out of the box and it's ready to assemble and everything you see here fits inside the box so it's all self-contained there's even room in that box if you if you flatten out your pfd and you have the foldable uh four piece uru paddle you can put that in the box as well but you have your three zipper channels for the bow you have your back rest you have your seat pad you have your foot rest you have three bulkheads and then you have the three zipper channels for the rear okay the first thing you want to do is you want to put your floorboard in and as you notice this floorboard is actually the top of the box very well assimilated into that box there's a slit right here and the slit is where your backrest will go so you want that to be to the rear or to the stern of the oroo kayak now how do you know which is the front and the back of the front and the back or the bow and the stern on the oraru kayak where it has uru kayak on the side of the hall that's the front or the bow of the kayak so again your floorboard wants to go with the slit to the rear or to the stern of the kayak and all you do to put that in is there's little hooks built into this handle and you come in and it just clicks into place on one side then you come around to the other side and it clicks into place and you're done now the floorboard is in the kayak okay the next thing that you want to do is you want to attach your foot rest this right here or what your feet press against when it's here in the kayak but it has a bungee cord with the front or the bow bulkhead attached to it so it's all one piece what you want to do is come here take the bungee cord run it under the deck lines this is the deck line that will be on top of the kayak once it's installed and then come up here and clip that bungee cord to a little strap that's up here then your bulkhead and don't worry if it doesn't fit in very tight at first it will once you fold the kayak it fits into these little channels and then your foot rest attaches to these lines which are positioned back to the rear of the kayak like so and then you can adjust these lines to adjust your foot rest where it needs to be but again like i said don't worry about it yet that bulkhead is going to want to come loose until you start forming the kayak so we're just going to leave it there for right now now the next thing because the kayak kind of resembles a big bathtub it's just a big tub we need to start forming the kayak so i'm going to take the bow and i'm going to tighten these bow straps and again it's just as simple as pulling this cord and there i have it tightened now i'm going to come back to the stern as well and i'm going to tighten those so you can see the form is starting to take shape with the oaru kayak okay next we're really starting to put the form into the kayak and to do that i'm going to take the bow and i'm going to attach the zipper channels to this and bring it together first of all i want to take the kayak and if it's a new kayak it's not going to be as pliable as this one that's been folded you know five six times you're gonna have to work it a little bit more but it actually takes has a memory and it retains its shape more you want to take this hook and you want to hook the bow together like that then i'm going to take my three zipper channels right here and i'm going to take that bulkhead again and make sure it stays in its spot there's little markings on the bulkhead to tell you where to put it into the grooves and now with the hall starting to take shape the bulkhead actually wants to stay where you put it longer now this is your lines for the top deck of the kayak so you want to run your zipper channels underneath this line and this is what's crucial when you're putting these zipper channels on you're going to take your left hand and you're going to bring them together as much as possible and then you want to flatten them out you don't want there to be a big peak you want these to be flatter and then you're going to take this zipper channel so it grabs both sides keep it flat notice how i'm pushing down as i'm putting that zipper channel on by pushing down it's grabbing both sides and actually zipping the hull together and i slide that all the way back towards the cockpit i'm going to take my next one do the same thing keeping in mind i need to keep everything flat both sides flat so that zipper channel slides on nicely and again the first time you do this it'll take a little bit more to coax it but after you've done it four or five times the boat kind of remembers where it needs to go and the last one now the kayak has been totally zipped together and it resembles the bow of a touring kayak now that we're done with the bow let's put the backrest in again the backrest slides into this groove in the floorboard that i talked to you about before and it goes in just like so and it's going to sit there like that now before i seal up the the rear of the kayak i need to put the bulkheads in back here as well and i actually could have done this when i put the forward bulkhead in but i'm going to take this one here the bigger one because it's a bigger part of the kayak and i'm going to insert it into the channels and again on the bulkhead there's these little semi-circle lines that's where it needs to engage the channel so you do that there and you do it here and i like it doing it at this stage once the front is done because the kayak has more form and it wants to hold those bulkheads better again the top i want to hook the channel here and i want to hook the channel here so goes in like that goes in like that and again these do not stay perfectly until you actually form the boat then they're held together by the shape of the boat okay now like the front we need to hook the back of the kayak together and this can be a little tricky if it's your first time you want to take the back rest there's two elliptical shaped holes with a big hole and then it tapers down to a narrower groove you want to take these studs or these screws that protrude out of the kayak body and you want to put them into the backrest like so and then but before you do that you want to hold this hook up here you want to hold this hook up put the screws into the groove and then come back over like so now as i zipper it together those screws are going to travel along those elliptical holes and lock it all together now let's zip the back of the kayak together again i have three of these zipper channels again keep it very very flat bring the the black ribs together keep it flat and keep pushing on it as you slide the zipper channel see how i'm pulling it together and keeping it flat by pushing down on it that will ensure that the zipper channel grabs both sides of the ridges and again i'm sliding it all the way up here and those screws in the backrest have been brought together so i'm going to take this latch and i'm going to lock it down now nothing's coming apart there now let's take the next zipper channel again same process push down keep everything together and the last one now that all zipper channels have been put together i'm going to latch the front of the kayak it's a fail safe just like the latch behind the backrest we closed and locked it together this strap with this aluminum hook latches to an eye loop on the other side and then all you do is you pull it tight now these are two fail safes no way the kayak's coming apart and if you want to use the thigh rests that are provided with the coast now is a good time to put them on just undo the thumb screws attach the velcro to the inside and put the thumb screw through this slot and then you can slide it back and forth to get that custom fit for your thighs and again it would look like so now a couple of the final steps before your coast is seaworthy and again if you're looking at the coast or the bay they both go together identical it's just one's 12 foot and 116 foot but you notice in the back in the stern it is totally sealed off right here no water can get into the kayak at all absolutely impossible all that you need to do is take this little plug here put that in there and then grab your neoprene strap or your neoprene fairing and pull it up and over now this is 100 water tight and i'm going to take my grab lines on the back and i'm going to attach it to the clip on the fairing it's held in place and then now you have a couple nice grab handles on the bow and the stern to seal it off now i'm going to do the same thing to the front as well okay now here's one of the things i do not like as much about the oru coast and it's not that big of a deal it's easily fixable and that is the foam seat that comes with the oreo kayak not real thick not forgiving on your backside you know if you're out there paddling for you know a day two days even several hours you get sore in this you need something else now don't get rid of this use this as it's intended by use this as it's intended by inserting it underneath the bungee cord in the boat but we're going to add to it and what i mean by add is sweet cheeks sweet cheeks comes in a 100 or 200 pad thickness you can order this from jacksonadventures.com i'll put the link in my description box but at jacksonadventures.com they sell the sweet cheeks seat pads there's two different thicknesses and what you do it's filled it's airtight and it's filled with lots of little styrofoam balls you take it and you inflate it to where there's a bunch of air in it then you put it in the kayak and then you sit down on it and you suck all the air out and then you close it once you suck the air out and it literally forms to your backside it's a custom fit for you and it's great inside the oroo kayak because number one you don't want to elevate yourself too much in a touring kayak because you're going to raise your center of gravity and it's going to be more tippy with this i don't really see that that too much i just get a lot of comfort with it and again jackson adventures it's a different company go to jackson adventures order the sweet cheeks i guarantee you you'll be more comfortable now the back rest on the oroo kayak in my opinion i i think it's great uh see how you can you can tighten the straps on it and make it form to your back and give you good lumbar support um i like the back rest on the oro it's just i needed to do something a little bit more to make me comfortable for all day paddling now i know what you're thinking you're saying kayak cliff there's no cockpit covers on the kayak like most or all traditional touring kayaks have well that's right it's completely sealed off so how do you put your gear inside it's very easy all you do is these three plastic zipper channels you take off the fairing on the back the neoprene fairing and then you grab your zipper channels that hold the kayak together you know when you're putting it together you take all three of them and then you're able to peel back and open up the kayak to get this much touring space or this much um you know payload capacity right here and again even more payload capacity in the very back now this is also made to accommodate uh the airbags that you can buy from uru kayak as well uh for if you anticipate taking on water uh you're not gonna have a cockpit cover on maybe you're gonna be in rough waters you wanna make sure it remains buoyant uh like a sealed bulkhead kayak does well with the oreo you need to add the airbags on the back if you need that the oreo coast accommodates paddlers up to six foot six so there's plenty of room up inside the cockpit for your feet up against the foot pads up front the cockpit height is not as much as some touring kayaks i wish it was a little higher you just can't wear big thick boots or big tennis shoes or anything like that you need to really invest in a pair of neoprene kayak booties which i think everybody has and that gives you plenty of foot room up inside the cockpit for access to the bow like we did the stern for your storage the process is the same take off the three zipper channels spread it open and you have plenty of storage from the front bulkhead all the way up to the tip of the bow and then just behind your your foot pads you have about this much storage as well so there's about this much storage in the in the bow if you think this video was helpful and you're really enthused by the oroo kayaks number regardless of what model whether it's the coast or the bay or the uh haven or the you know there's five different five six different models if you like them save ten percent
