Just watched this video last night. Would love to visit that building
I wanted to comment on this with maybe a different POV, maybe outside the whole nationalism, church v state thing. A different version of this video (different part of the ceremony) was actually one of the first that I saw many months ago when I first started inquiring into Orthodoxy. As a Protestant, I was blown away by the grandeur of the church, the way that these high ranking officials were standing there, essentially humbling themselves, before God (yes, though we don’t know truly what’s in their hearts). That (Second Antiphon?) hymn that they first sing called out to my soul in a strong way, even though I couldn’t catch much of the Russian. This “display,” as some have been calling it, was actually one of my first awakenings to how God truly should be worshiped—with honor and great dedication. I don’t believe in nationalism (rather in love of the place) and I don’t pretend to understand the complexities of the geopolitics here, but that’s an outsider’s perspective. Interesting how differently people perceive things.
would love if my own political leaders were at the very least Christian in more than just name
Edit: knowing that they go to their icon corner every morning and evening would assuage many of my concerns about their motivations lol
I think it's a good thing that the Russian state, just a few decades ago a great persecutor of the Church, has now become a proponent of the Church.
But I am curious how many of those military officers (who I assume were all required to be present) are actually practicing Christians. Especially the older ones, who grew up during the height of Khrushchev's anti-religious campaigns.
