I'm here to be your Fairy Godmother of linen closet organization my promise to you is in one weekend you'll be able to completely reorganize your linen closet and maximize all of its storage space I'm going to share new innovative ways to store the comet items you find in a linen closet but the best part is you're going to be able to maintain it longterm because you're going to think through what you're doing before you put everything back in there make sure you watch this full video because I save my favorite hack to the very end if you're new here I'm Tracy also known as Port Daydreamer I'm absolutely obsessed with creating high-end looks for less oh and I'm the queen of painting everything so why are linen closets so hard to organize in the first place well the construction of them is super weird and if you're in a typical Builder quality home like I am you're going to have a linen closet that looks a lot like mine did before I modified it the issues that we Face are one there is a frame that's blocking a lot of the shelving space side to side that poses challenges for storage the other is there's typically a top shelf in a lot of space that goes all the way up to the ceiling that we aren't using or maximizing then billers put rows and rows of stationary wire shelving which is frankly some of the most inefficient storage you can have number one nothing can stay on their stationary number two everything falls through the bottom and number three they instantly wrinkle anything you set down on the wire shelving you can see I have modified my wire shelving to make it look like it's built in and when I tell you this is the easiest home hack and DIY that you can accomplish in an afternoon it is for four shelves in my closet I spent about $25 a shelf just to give you perspective you don't have to nail you don't have to cut you don't have to paint it's super easy and I'm going to link in the description box below my tutorial on how to cover over your wire shelves creating solid shelves within your linen closet is going to help you create more space the nice thing about solid shelving too is they are pre-made you can have them cut for free at your local home inment store and with some simple brackets you can install them inside the linen closet and add more shelving or better spacing for your shelving so the first thing I want you to think through is how to make your shelves work better for you so we need to decide what you want to keep what you want to trash and what you want to donate before you ever get started through in your mind and after you watch this video start thinking about these questions one is what do you use on a daily basis that you find completely frustrating because it's not easy to get to and it's unorganized and it gives you kind of that little anxiety feeling those are the things we need to deal with first the second thing I want you to think about is what do you have stored in cabinets and drawers maybe even in another room that you really wish you didn't have to leave your bathroom go get and you would rather have stored in your linen closet instead the next is typically we all change out some form of bedding during the seasons whether it gets hotter or colder so I want you to think through your seasonal bedding needs and where you're currently storing everything and if you'd like that back in your linen closet and last but not least is what do you buy in bulk that you are struggling trying to store or you wish those bulk items like bars of soap could be stored inside the linen closet instead and get those things out of other closets drawers or cabinets once you've thought through all of those things it's really going to help you as I walk through what I've done in my linen closet many storage items were returned in the making of This Lin closet how you're going to organize your own linen closet I'm here just to help inspire you and give you ideas and storage solutions that look good and maximize space but what you do at your house is very personal and I want you to love it just as much as I love my linen closet let's start at the top of the linen closet and work our way down let's deal with the hardest part of the linen closet which is the top shelf this top shelf seriously is one of the weirdest things I have ever seen all the storage space that goes all the way up to the ceiling and you can't use half of it now I've seen other people in their tutorials that they recommend rolling your quilts your comforters and different things and storing it on that Top Shelf with little tags or labels I didn't like that idea and I instead went in search of an alternative storage solution you can see what I've done within my 39 in wide linen closet I could store 1 2 3 4 or five maybe six king size quilts or comforters what's super cool about the storage solution that I found you can stand them on their end and align them vertically and use up some of that unused space they're narrow they have clear covers they have the ability to be labeled and they have two handles so they make pulling it in and out of the linen closet top shelf so much easier they zip completely closed and that means means you're going to keep the dust mides off of them so they stay fresh and clean and great for allergy or asthma sufferers each one of these labels is 2 in by 3 in just print them out on your computers and slide them into little pockets and you'll know exactly what's up here this is where I'm storing all of my seasonal quilt so think Christmas time think warm and cozy stuff that I don't use except for just a few months out of the year so it's really up to to you how you want to use that space But I would say underbed storage organization is perfect stood on its end for the top shelf if your linen closet now the other nice thing about vertical space and I've used it over on this side of my linen closet is you can stack stuff up in there so think about items that you buy in bulk toilet paper or tissue boxes I've got my tissue boxes stacked up inside that corner of my linen closet I hope that helps you think through how to use a top shelf for your linen closet and how to maximize that vertical shelf space next you got to think through the typical things that you store in a linen closet which are towels sheets washcloths pillowcases extra Shams and some great storage solutions that are going to keep them neat clean and keep the dust off as well I love that idea because I have allergies and Asthma so if I can keep dust mites off in between cleaning and use that is a big bonus and I think you'll think so too you may have never seen storage cubes quite like these and I love these storage cubes they are definitely Innovative and solve a lot of problems number one they have these really cool mesh see-through panels so you can actually see what's inside when it's on the Shelf number two there's a Lin so you can keep the dust off and keep things fresher longer and number three they have handles you can take these handled boxes with you set them wherever you fold your laundry put the towels and hand towels back inside and then slide them right back on the shelf and what's cool about that whether you have wire shelving or solid shelving you can always keep things looking neat and clean at all times there's a couple schools of thought you can roll your towels and store them inside you can fold your towels and store them inside I ended up using an acrylic divider inside my hand towel bin and lining everything up so that's why they look kind of the way that they are I tried a couple different varieties and frankly it doesn't matter what you do at your house but what does matter is you pick a folding or rolling option that you believe you can maintain longterm that's quick and easy every time you do laundry these storage cubes are perfect for towels and hand towels but you don't have to be limited to those whatever you feel you want to store inside that you want to see and be able to transport easily is a great option for these C cubes now don't forget that storage behind the door frame so I found that these little narrow bins were the perfect option in my size closet that I'm storing some extra Shams on the one side and on the other side I'm storing tissue boxes and they fit perfectly stacked and tucked back in the corner next my most favorite part of this linen closet storage is this beautiful shelf newer homes typically don't come with medicine cabinets anymore so I thought it was really important inside my linen closet to create a medicine cabinet finding these clear teered pullout drawers was the perfect solution for storing all of my medicines wound care and extra toiletries they're great because they lock so you can pull them out they have dividers to keep everything neat and clean and separate you need to take the drawer out lift up and it comes right out so I'm going to share what I decided to put inside these clear drawer organizers just to get you thinking about what you may want to do at your house so you know when somebody cuts themselves in your house or you do you're scrambling trying to find Band-Aids trying to find antibiotic ointment well I decided to use one whole drawer as my little first aid kit you can see that I have stored a ton of bandages and gauze pads and tapes in this top shelves these little dividers make it really easy easy to keep things neat and on the bottom shelf I put different types of creams and ointments and Scar gel and Vaseline and any other things that I just didn't know where to store but fit into this first aid category I definitely love to Save A Buck and will buy things in bulk whenever they are on sale like the buy one get one half off I'm all about that so this is where I'm choosing to store bars of soap and deodorant and toothpaste and hair care so I kept all of those toiletry and cosmetic items in one drawer organized together so I can easily find them then unfortunately we all get sick and we need some medicine from time to time and so I stored anything related to stomach or upper respiratory upset all those medicines you can find in this organizer then in this last one I have some quick grab items things that I know that I need when I need them like ibuprofen acetaminophen a thermometer my inhaler that just kind of overflow items on the top shelf I put more wound care like Ace bandages so really it doesn't matter how you organize things but what I really want you to do is think through what you would categorize together and ideally you put that category in one of your tiered organizers so you find everything within quick reach don't forget to store things on either side so in my closet I kept kind of with the skin and wound care theme so I got lotion some hydrogen peroxide and also some rubbing alcohol then on the other side because this is where my laundry camper is I have some things that will help me like oxy clean stain remover and also I've never known where to store this which is my lamp roller and then my cotton Pals because I never know where those are now they're at easy reach just tucked back in here okay let's talk about sheets and when I tell you I am a terrible sheet folder I am professional towel folder yes terrible sheet folder so I wanted to find a solution and you may want one too if you're not good at folding your sheets but you still want them to look nice and neat and clean I love the storage solution that I found for Sheets because it stores flat when not in use so you can tuck it back into a corner or under your bed what's cool about this storage solution is you can store up to two sets of KingSize sheets so anything smaller you might be able to do more I'm talking fitted flat and pillowcases inside this little box so what I love about the sheet set storage box that I found it has a handle so you can take it with you when you are folding your laundry it has a place for a label and of clear window so you can see exactly what's inside and the nice thing is not only can you store sheet sets inside you can store folded duvet and Sham sets as well I just added a simple label using a 2x3 in template on my computer and printed it out and stuck it in there what I found that you may love too is you can easily take this storage unit off the shelf with you to go change out your sheets and then when you get the laundry done and folded you just slide it right back in and it stays nice neat and clean I also love to change out my pillowcases midweek not just on the weekends so I like to store my pillow cases in these narrow bins what I did to maximize the storage space inside these bins is I found these clear plastic dividers that fit perfectly inside you just fold up your pillowcases so you can see everything and you tuck them down in there and slide it right back on the Shelf I also found that these storage bins are perfect for storing Shams both Euro and standard Shams and what I love is by folding them this way you can see exactly what you have and organize them by color because we all have tons of washcloths and I can't stand those stacked up folder piles that end up falling over I organize my washcloths the same way guess what we are almost finished and by the time we get finished I will have given you 12 ideas to organize your linen closet it's much easier than you think to create a hamper inside the linen closet when you think about it you typically are getting undressed in your bathroom to go ahead and take a shower or a bath so having a laundry hamper inside the linen closet is really a great option when I moved out of my old house and into this house I moved this hamper with me it used to be inside my walk-in closet well in this house I didn't have the space for it so I took out two of the lower shelves which were wire shelves disassembled this hamper system and reinstalled it inside this linen closet I have had this in this linen closet for 15 years and love it this one is divided into three sections I put my dirty towels in one my dark clothes in the other and lights and whites in the other you just simply pull the bag out and under and you take it directly into the laundry room so that may be the perfect solution for you at your house we're almost at the end but I have a few more ideas for you and don't forget about the door how I've decided to use my door is I have a command hook and I used to hang my bras here because of my laundry hamper and I was Finding I was having to take each bra off one at a time I love this storeage solution versus putting my bras inside and drawer I can see exactly what I have and it keeps my bras in good shape I'm going to leave you with two other ideas one is you can organize your linen closet by room or by family member so if you're trying to train your children to make their beds and change out their sheets you can always create bins for them or even these sheet set bins for them and put their names on them so they can grab and go and take it to their bathroom or their bedroom or the other is if you're storing multiple bedrooms inside your linen closet one could be the guest bedroom and one could be the primary bedroom it's really up to you but I thought that was a fun idea that you may want to try at your house I've got one little last hack for you which is lighting up the inside of your linen closet magnetic rechargeable LED m sensor lights because they're magnetic they have a little bracket that you can install you can put them side to side in your linen closet every time you open the door they're going to go on and then once you close the door they'll go off you can put them up inside so it shines directly down or the super cool part you don't even have to use the brackets that come with the lights themselves is they attach directly and magnetize two wire shelving so now if you've created a medicine cabinet like I have you can simply put your LED lights with the magnets and then when you come in the middle of the night to try to find a cough drop you can see everything inside I link these LED lights in the description and I just wanted to give you a few tips to make sure they work perfectly for you and are motion activated I ended up installing them underneath the wire shelving in this manner so I kept the motion sensors as close as possible to the middle of the linen closet so when I open and close the door they both turn on one will turn on and then the other one will turn on by switching everything to Daylight mode they won't impact each other so those are just some little simple tips to make sure these are motion activated inside your closet what's super cool is they're rechargeable you just pull them down and plug them in with a USB cord and you don't have to waste any money on batteries I hope all of these great ideas to maximize the storage in your linen closet and these innovative cretive and beautiful storeage Solutions have got you inspired to tackle this project at your house you love this video please like And subscribe I'd love to see you again
