honolulu hawaii as the sun sets on the regular season oregon state is soaring after winning six of their last seven games including an emotional win last week against in-state rival oregon but hawaii's offense is flying high in the strength and accuracy of colt brennan's arm leading the nation in almost every passing category brennan aims to extend the warriors nine-game winning streak and set some new records along the way it's oregon state and number 24 hawaii coming up next [Music] welcome everybody to aloha stadium in honolulu hawaii jam-packed no tickets to be had for this one they are excited about their college football team and tonight the beavers of oregon state come to town to try to knock off the warriors and end their winning streak hi everybody ron franklin and welcome to honolulu hawaii what i'm holding right here this prop is a tea leaf three or thirty thousand of these were handed out before the ball game to all comers it is a green out of the beavers of ohio state tonight hoping that they can send them home with a loss instead of making it seven of eight victories ed cunningham joins me on the telecast tonight ed this concludes championship saturday i hope our game is as exciting as almost everyone that's come before us colt brennan i can't go anywhere without having people want to stop and talk about it i saw him in practice on thursday he is sensational yeah he leads the nation in almost every uh passing category and the talk around town has been will he go to new york for the heisman trophy presentation i think he will ron this young man you can talk about the system all you want i know it's june jones i know it's the run and shoot but the first thing you notice is his accuracy the players that he throws to talk all the time that they don't have to make spectacular catches and he is looking to break david klingler's record tonight with four touchdown passes he'll break that all-time record and we'll talk about later in the broadcast he's done it in nearly 200 less attempts so a pretty impressive record if it does fall well let's talk about oregon state a young man by the name of matt moore quarterbacking for them he was sensational last week in what they termed the civil war and his win over oregon and it was a long way a long time coming for matt moore he struggled really mightily early in the season he got booed by everybody even when the defense was playing bad he was getting booed he led the beavers on the drive for the alexis cerna field goal to win it and then got carried off the field by the same fans who were booing him and it's really been the turnaround by matt moore the beginning of the season two and three he was not playing very well very much like last year when he threw a lot of interceptions and the last few ball games he's really been on top of it but ron it can't be just matt moore tonight they're going to need some type of running game against hawaii and for that let's go down to the sideline the third member of our broadcast team dr jerry punch he's going to talk about defense exactly ron and aloha everyone you know with all due respect to matt moore's prowess as a passer you know a better indication of what oregon's they can do with their ability to run the football if you take a look in the eight games that they have won they have averaged over 152 yards rushing however in the four games they have lost just over 65 yards running the football in fact they are six and all when they tailback rushes for 100 plus yards so matt moore may be important but all pac-10 tailback that guy right there evans and bernard may just hold the key to a beaver victory here tonight ron okay jerry so for oregon state they've won six of their last seven can they make it seven of eight and as far as hawaii is concerned a nine-game winning streak that is the third longest in the nation coming up the beavers and the warriors enterprise rental car for the game yeah they pick us so welcome back uh some beautiful scenes of a sunset uh at our hotel that we're staying at here in honolulu uh colt brennan 51 touchdown passes this season ncaa record as ed mentioned just a moment ago is 54 and that was set by david klingler back in 1990 this season scoring for hawaii 48.6 that's first unbelievable how efficient they've been and the one thing that the oregon state coaches talked about is don't fall asleep on their running game you would think it's all uh throwing in the running shoot but june jones has an effective running game eighth year as the head coach here at hawaii and if you think you were hearing wind noise in our headsets that's exactly it this is going to be a difficult throwing night we are having intermittent showers as serna prepares to kick the ball off for oregon state and the wind they are saying is gusting up to 20. this is the strongest 20 mile an hour wind i've ever said it is going to be difficult for both quarterbacks tonight and we'll see who adjusts and handles it the best here's the kick very long and this is with the wind and will not be returned it's five yards deep dickerson will take it and it will be scrimmaging from the 20-yard line oregon state did win the toss and they deferred so that we get an opportunity to see cole brennan to open this ball game tonight and a lot like matt moore who transferred from ucla to oregon state colt brennan all over the country came from colorado and junior college here and as you see his numbers and don't let the system fool you if you have not seen this young man play and ron you and i have studied him all week and we're leading up to this game his accuracy now it's going to be tested in this win but his accuracy is phenomenal so on first down and they always line up with four wide receivers and you see the pullback to the right side who is in a slot position and they'll go with a running play on the very first down and it's ross dickerson [Music] so the hawaii offense leading the nation in points per game total yards 553.8 and passing yardage 434 four starting wide receivers have combined for 39 touchdowns best for 13 sample with 10 rivers with eight and grace mullen with eight not sure if we're going to see a lot of bryce mullen tonight he is a young man who has been battling a growing problem that's devon bess the sophomore out of oakland california that you gotta look at number seven they'll keep it on the ground again in running play this is dickerson takes it up the sideline steps out of bounds that's a belt for the first down so defensively for oregon state 38 sacks tied for six most in the nation 17 different players having at least one and they're going to need pressure to help their young defensive backs keenan lewis and brandon hughes free safety is al alfa lava and they are led by first team pac-10 strong safety savvy piscatelli and he is a truly outstanding ball player and he's a big fella for a safety as well at 6-3 about what 230. came from boca raton florida was a high school teammate of evanson bernard and actually talked bernard into coming out and joining him here at oregon state and both of them first team all pac-10 this year so running plays and that is the initial first down of the night for hawaii and i'm sure the fans are in shock here so far that they have not already seen about five passes brennan steps up gets the ball complete and that is it's best on the receiving end and they're gonna say he picks up about four yards on the play and devon bass the one thing you notice right away with these wide receivers is how good they are with their hands and again the accuracy that ball put right there but the one thing june jones does not allow his receivers to do is catch the ball with their bodies they work all the time catch it with your hands because that always impacts yards after catch if you catch it with your hands your feet keep moving you can pick up some yardage second down they need to take it to the 41 steps up drills long over the middle and it's complete 45 and down to the 40. and so far it's been the devon best show 510 195 sophomore out of oakland california and bess who originally had committed to oregon state got in some off the field trouble and uh was gonna go uh was gonna follow through to his commitment but came to see june jones and june jones has found a way with kids who have some troubled past and looks out for them and says listen you've got a chance to come here you're going to play in a great offense and he has high praise for this young man june jones has coached some great great wide receivers he said this may be one of the best grace mullen checks into the ball game that is him in motion number one and they'll hand it off to him and look at this little wrinkle right up the middle 20 down to the 18-yard line piscatelli making the last two tackles that is a gain of 20 yards on the play well they do so many things formation wise and this is exactly what mark banker the defensive coordinator for morgan state told us the other day on the phone that is so challenging in this running shoot you would assume all you're going to do is drop back and play pass coverage but they do so many different little wrinkles like that that is just simply a little back door cut by grace mullen but a wide receiver lined up on the wing you just don't expect him to get the handoff dickerson back in the lineup and they line him up and running back sets in the pocket steps up here comes pressure naval sack here he will go down behind the line of scrimmage so they will officially uh bryant cornell is the man who will be given credit for the sack [Music] coach riley excuse me ron but mike riley of course was a san diego chargers head coach he took over for june jones june jones who was the interim head coach after kevin gilbride was fired and they actually spoke coach riley called coach jones and just wanted to know about the organization and everything before he took the job and said he gave him some very good advice about what to look for in that organization grace mullen back on the field at wide receiver here comes pressure and he's going to go down again and oregon state possibly lucky they didn't pick up a flag onto still a later hit francis is the man who came in to make the tackle number four hoya junior out of rancho cordova california and he comes on the corner bleds francis a junior college player they really needed some depth at that cornerback position and this is the way when hawaii gets going run you have to bring pressure and you have to bring it a couple of different ways their offensive line is very strong and so a good way to do it is bring it from the outside where you're probably not going to be going up against one of these big guys one of the things that hawaii gives people trouble with they throw the pass very quickly two three-step drop and they get it off here comes pressure again stepping up dumps the ball up and he throws it to an offensive lineman and we wait for the flag to come down no you know what just looks like an offensive level maria and and he weighs 296 pounds but he's a pullback folks so i threw you off ron because i i gave you the signal that there was going to be a penalty flag but maria who used to be a 300 and he was about 350. and he's down way down to 296 pounds heads up play but boy i really thought that that was going to be a penalty this is going to be a 50-yard field goal attempt and this is into the win by dan kelly 10-11 this year good pass is this going to be long enough no just wide right it was long enough but the wind pushed it off just a little bit to the right to a rare occasion hawaii does not score points on their opening offensive possession let's take a timeout we'll be back to take a look at the beavers after this [Music] i'm dalan hart jr so you think you're a family guy fan i am playing all new family guy adventure that's too hot for tv with a family guy video game are you trying to get a suit family guy from 2k yeah it's that hot pretty mature hey you're looking for a party this is our house we say every single time man say every time this is our house we protect our house and we take it to them and let's ship them back to oregon where they belong let's oh that was in the locker room prior to the game one of the team captains ikaika alama frances with words of encouragement for his teammates the defensive coordinator jerry glanville says he may be the hardest worker of any defensive player in america he said he's never seen one like this guy [Applause] and now on the first offensive play joe newton the tight end his focus was taken away because of the noise in the stadium and also it was hawaii shifting around on the defense offense five yards we were just talking during the timeout about the wind is it is it bad on the field or on the win is actually swirling down here a moment ago the flags on top of both goalposts are both facing toward midfield like standing in a car wash got wind and water coming from two different directions at the same time it is a swirl okay like a car wash that's interesting so just the wind not rain as well more gonna go long and this one is with the wind and the gulf stream or actually the pacific stream in that case took that one about eight yards beyond the receiver jackson is the man that he wanted so the lineups as we take a look at the beavers on offense they have outscored their opponents 108 to 48 in the first quarter this season they have five all pac-10 selections running backs bernard and lineman jeremy perry they're on the first team second team strato the wide receiver coats and demand the center straight ahead with the running play and bernard will have a very short yardage it's going to be a third down and beyond 10 yards and hawaii defensively if i can hold on to these papers and keep from just simply blowing away they are led by defensive coordinator jerry glanville they have allowed 12 and a half fewer points a game this season compared to last year and of course purcell alama francis and leonard peters are the three leaders as far as the numbers defensively they are the stat pack guys third down they need to take it to the 43. middle screen ball is dropped bernard had the ball hit him right in the hands and he dropped it and listened to this crowd one two three and out for the beavers well everybody on this island talks about the offense but jerry glanville has done a masterful job with this defense in his second year as a defensive coordinator was away from football for 14 years decided to get back into it and june jones who used to coach for him and both houston and atlanta called him and said come here and work for me he's done a great job kyle luma's back to punt the deep man is best and with this win behind him he may kick this thing out of the stadium see if he can get it up uh [Applause] into the high blast here's the boot boy this thing how far it's going to go down to bess and the 13-yard line gets by one tackler gets by another and then ran into his own man who went down at the 26. the coaches had promised to von bess that they would start letting him return punts and he's doing an excellent 57 yards on the punt 12 on the return learn more at rhapsody.com the hotter the hot the colder the the islands today was not exactly chamber of commerce uh weather uh and it is continuing tonight i think a 60 chance of rain was predicted for this evening but we didn't know the winds were going to blow quite this way out of the flag gets it complete and that is bryce mullen hit immediately and push back he'll be giving forward progress out to the 29. take a look at hawaii's impact players devon bess we've already seen his impact on the game in the punt game he'll also be big and adam leonard we talked about guys that june jones finds who other schools have backed off of leonard a sophomore blew out his acl three games into his senior year he went to high school in seattle and didn't red shirt last year was not very good but he's really come on strong and if oregon state's going to get a running game going leonard the middle backer will be key malia in the backfield he's the fullback does a good job of blocking pass right over the middle and there's one in and out of the hands of grace mullet and i'll say this after going to practice on thursday we knew ed you talked about how much video we've watched of uh the young colt brennan in practice they simply don't drop passes they may throw 100 passes and complete 95 of them it's an amazing thing to watch and that's the interesting thing june jones works harder than any coach i've ever seen on making his receivers catch it with his hands you know some coaches allow guys to cradle it he just doesn't allow that to happen and if you can force that as habit it really helps your offense especially in situations where you might have to throw in front of the sticks for the catch and run third down they need to take it to the 36. sets in the pocket could it go long got a man there and it is caught at the 48-yard line and that is dickerson ross dickerson well dickerson was number 82 but because they've already put him in the backfield he's had to move around we have not seen nate ilawa their starting running back who had a bruised heel they weren't sure if he's going to be able to go but dickerson was lined up in the slot ran a little bit of a wheel route ended up one on one against piscatelli and that's a nice throw by brennan because the defensive back never turned around so under throw it and let the guy adjust see the numbers on dickerson and is that said he's been wearing number 82 but since if you're going to use him in the backfield they put him at the number 37 this evening huge third down play for hawaii brennan rolls the pocket gonna run not devoid of speed by any means he's going to have a gain of six so it'll be second and for his dog it makes his second tackle and you know in in talking about oregon state and the importance of this ball game they want to keep that streak going they've got six of seven that they won this is a fertile and important recruiting ground to them they come to the islands a lot in fact what three coaches are staying over after this game is over so another reason why coach riley told us hey this is we need this win right here it'd be huge for it and they didn't need to take this game ron this is their 13th game he decided to take it for that exact reason you see the linebackers showing blitz they go with a run and nickerson turns the corner boy he gets necktie and let's see if they give him enough forward progress to pick up the first down it would appear that he would have it as daniel drayton makes the tackle for the beavers well it's interesting with the great year that colt brennan has had devon best over a thousand yard receivings for the second year in a row yesterday when we were talking to coach jones he said that dickerson was the team's mvp because he's done so many things he's played every position every skill position except quarterback basically in this offense and with some injuries at that running back spot ilawa who said he was going to be healthy obviously not tonight mouse davis if the name is familiar with a run and shoot days and he's the running backs coach and he thought he was going to be able to go tonight but a heel is something that is can be very very touchy especially warming up he may have bruised it again third down did not pick up the first down it's just inches and grenoble goes straight ahead and he'll add the first down in fact pretty good wedge there it's gonna go for about three yards and let's go down to the sideline and doc has more on nate well ron the warriors leading tailback nate layola was hoping to be able to play that but i learned just before the game they thought his heel was about 50 if you're wondering why you wouldn't put some numbing medicine what they called in the football lingo dr king dr novakane would try to help him play you ever tried to walk when your foot falls asleep you can't even stand up and if that heel was completely numb he would not be able to turn the corner or feel it that's why they can't do much in other words to endure the pain i doubt we will see him very much at all tonight okay jerry what we said to his replacements 296 he is 254. the ball caught in midair by and the fallback that i was just talking about who weighs 296. [Applause] takes it down inside the 25-yard line well this is exactly what we saw last time and this is keaton cristic a true freshman knocks the ball loose and it looked very similar to the last play when it looked like brennan was going to be sacked except this time it was not a planned play you ought to put that one in the book yep reagan mauia senior out of stockton california and he is the young man we talked about over 350 and is uh all the way down to 296. he wants to throw got it out in the flat has that one complete and that's bess again and mess i believe with what his fourth reception of the young knight is at the 20-yard line well there's a lot of records on the line tonight for colt brennan everyone around here wondering if he's going to get a free trip to new york we already mentioned the touchdown record of david klingler one touchdown he tied second with bj simmons of texas tech completion percentage he's gonna have to have a great night to catch dante culpepper but the efficiency one that's a great one sean king back in 98 under tommy bowden had such a great year we'll run those numbers for you as the night goes on first down from the 20 draw play and they give it to the big guy again and reagan is going to be stopped probably a yard loss on the play [Music] [Applause] keaton cristic is the man who made the tackle for oregon state boy christic a true freshman they were thinking about redshirting him but alan darling he's fighting with some stingers and this young man six three 223 pounder got great speed you can already or you can already see ron why the coaches are excited he closes on the tackle very quickly as the look of a linebacker too doesn't he i'll tell you i felt sorry watching darling yesterday he wants so badly to play in this football game and i just don't think there's any way they hand it off back inside fast ball is loose recovered well let's see who got it oregon state says they have it and i believe they do well that's a great play by joey larocque outside linebacker remember we saw this this play the the other way to grace mullins this to devon bess and joey larocque outside linebacker what a woman i never saw a bean bag go down are they saying that he was down before the ball came out obviously they they thought so but hawaii better run this play in a hurry because i think that was a boy it sure did look like a fumble to me ron they called it an incomplete pass no he handed that ball off course he did wow well like i said they better get this play off in a hurry third down pressure off the corners drills it ends on in and out of the hands of his intended receiver bess and he was there for the touchdown yeah he short-armed it [Applause] he knew he was going to take a shot [Music] he absolutely short-armed it ron that's daniel drayton a strong safety back there and you just don't see best drop balls like that so a field goal attempt this is going to be placed down at the 29-yard line so a 39-yard attempt missed his first attempt of the night this one right here he's got plenty of distance and he's no good this one is going to be wide left and we told you that these wins are really tough and i don't believe the 20 miles an hour and i can tell you kelly will tell you the same thing right about now no score we'll be right back [Music] right now get the red razor v3m for only 39.95 [Music] [Applause] [Music] sharper details stunning clarity more vibrant colors discover what your camera's megapixels are really capable of wow upgrade to an ultra high definition photo printer [Applause] we're still trying to figure out how it could have been called a pass [Applause] i guess it is justice here for oregon state because they now have the ball after that fumble that they recovered at about the same spot [Applause] straight ahead with bernard has five has ten counted off at 15 and now making 20 yards and let's check down on the sideline and dr jerry punch has got more on that mysterious play we saw a moment ago there was call to pass jerry why while ron mike riley went out and talked to the referee bill mccabe and asked and asked that same question why is that not a fumble and and the referee told him when he tried to challenge it it was not challengeable he said once they handed the ball off or once the pass was called incomplete and the whistle was flown it was not challengeable he wanted to challenge it and he was told he could not okay well that's that's true right yeah because the whistle blows so possession was not recovered so it is a dead play straight ahead with the running play five yards again at 10 it's going to be 11 yards on this running play so back to back very successful chance by evanson bernard the junior out of boca raton well the left guard jeremy perry from hawaii first team all pac-10 as a sophomore got great push on that back side and that's the exact same place where bernard cut that ball back bernard fighting with an ankle injury did not play against usc this warm weather he said was really going to help him warm up early powers in motion and go straight ahead with the running play does he get whacked down i mean bernard took about two yards on the play and then he went down very hard and it's adam leonard who was there to make the stop number 44. well one thing jerry glenville was telling us that the nfl scouts have been saying is that this is the hardest hitting team on the west coast this defense for hawaii and jerry has challenged his group to get rid of the west coast part of that statement and become the hardest hitting team in the country they will come in and lay rydell's all over the running backs you see the numbers on adam leonard 98 tackles second down straight ahead with the running play breaks a little bit this time and it's gonna be a third down at about six yards for oregon state purcell is the man who came over to make the tackle bernard has built so low to the ground five nine 204 pounds and he looks like he's got his burst back he sprained his ankle pretty severely against arizona missed the huge win against usc and he's only had one 100-yard running game since then but he looks like his old self he's got that good burst i asked him with a smile which side of the line he'd like to run behind most and he said all of those guys are great guys i don't want anybody victory at me he said they're just good good people pass out in the flat that's powers got it complete gonna be bumped out of bounds at the 37 yard line and that is enough for the beavers first down well powers is the big inside slot receiver and he just runs an out cut [Applause] this is where matt moore has really improved his game is throwing the ball on time with accuracy he threw that ball just as soon as powers made his break and you can see the confidence level in matt moore it just wasn't there earlier in the year he's starting to feel he started he's got so much potential ron he's starting to really feel into that role oregon state has made a habit of scoring on their opening drive over most of the season didn't get it tonight but they got their best drive of the evening going from the 36 drills the ball has a man and that is caught by jackson reuben jackson senior out of stockton california junior college transfer well this is a heck of a throw in the win ron you're on the right hash jackson runs a deep outcut this is all the way back across the field this is one thing when matt moore was named the starters a freshman at ucla over drew olson the reason was that that arm strength he's as a very promising arm he's going to get a very good look at the next level because of that that's a that's a heck of a throw in this win well he threw well in southern california enough to upset the trojans one of two losses for them as they were surprised by ucla today first down new line of scrimmage the 21-yard line of hawaii blitz coming off the corner got him in and that's good for the touchdown to joe newton well joe newton has been their go-to guy in the past missed 05 with a leg injury lined up the tight end runs right down the seam and hawaii has struggled with tight ends the safety was late getting over there boy the safety was awfully late ron that was leonard peters who just got sucked way up into the line of scrimmage he's got to be over the top of that serna to attempt the extra point and he knocks it home right down the middle so let's take a timeout that is the end of the opening quarter with our new score oregon state seven and hawaii nothing [Music] the panthers [Music] [Applause] oregon state seven to nothing and i talked about first drive touchdowns by them how about first quarter scoring 115 points now well they're not so good on the back half so they have to be very good in the first half so against hawaii i think you'd want to build a little bigger lead if those numbers are going to shake out for the rest of the way in the second half here comes the kickoff they're going to put this one on the ground and is now being pitched back to one of the return guys and that is dickerson and nickerson finally stopped as he crosses the 35 well sunday night be sure and join reese davis mark bay and luke holtz for a complete breakdown of each and every college football bowl game the 2006 bold selection special on espn at 10 eastern is also available in high definition on espn hd well hawaii will be right here on december 24th for the hawaii bowl not sure of their opponent yet in oregon state headed to el paso on december 29th for the sun bowl [Applause] brennan under pressure gonna be sacked at the 26 yard line and that is dorian smith oregon state plays a lot of interior alignment take a look at the bcs of course everything went a little crazy today with usc losing to ucla what an amazing job by ucla's defense against that high-powered offense so now michigan florida are standing there and i got to tell you everyone is saying it's a foregone conclusion ron that michigan's in i don't buy it i think florida goes up in the computer polls and i think they'll nip at the heels of michigan in the human polls and i think they've got a chance to go play ohio state [Applause] up on the shovel pass and he gets all 296 pounds going and it's hard to slow down this exact same play last week against purdue late in the game when they needed a third down conversion and moya took it 16 yards you just don't expect a guy ron that's that big to be able to move like that and i think the defense goes to sleep they think he's just going to be in there as a pass protector and whoever's supposed to be keeping an eye on him starts bailing out into coverage [Applause] pass right over the middle got that one complete tried to break the tackle that's ian sample number three a senior out of washington township new jersey [Music] sample a young man who uh when he walked on ron they he didn't have the greatest hands coach jones worked with him and worked with him and worked with him because he's so quick in space and he's really figured out how to catch it it was huge against nevada in fact uh they got the nevada secondary confused and he caught one for 63 untouched bryce mullen turns the corner 25-20 inside the 15 as he's knocked forward and that was doggett who finally made the tackle but it's going to be first and 10 and the deepest penetration by hawaii tonight get the ball very quickly and grace mullen has that groin injury ron that we weren't sure if we were going to see him too much night you can see he's a little short his stride isn't quite full giddy up but the missed tackle to start that play and then all those receivers these receivers work very hard downfield to help each other out with blocking [Music] so first down and they have spotted it at the 13-yard line seven to nothing oregon state leads you see the red zone offense and how well they've done 59 touchdowns puts up a big stiff arm and he'll go out of bounds inside the five-yard line piscatelli finally is the man who wrote him down but he also received the stiff arm before he could bring him down nady lawa dr bunch gave us the report on his heel he bruised his heel late in the game against purdue but savvy piscatelli got to go low on this guy five foot nine almost 260 pounds but i don't think he would have tackled him well that's the reason actually you got to hit him around the ankles and that's pretty low good look at nate senior out of stafford virginia son of a military man that's how he became interested in hawaii play action to him pass over the middle and the receiver got knocked down and now here comes the flag here ron that looked like incidental contact to me i think that was francis yeah it was yeah it looked like he was running to make a play on the ball and just got his feet tangled [Applause] well we did not have his microphone but you could uh read it lipson up that he said number four is who the call was on wow and that is a francis yeah surprised if they throw the ball right here it is very important to this team a they they all love colt in the job that he has done and they want to see him get that record well he needs three to tie david klingler it looks like we've got a timeout but if he throws one here he would go into second second place tie with b.j simmons of texas tech with 52. [Applause] right there and colton we trust part of the green out here at the stadium oregon state is we showed you when they scored their touchdown with quite a few folks over here wearing the the beavers orange [Applause] [Music] in oregon state the the thing they've been trying to do when whenever hawaii gets a drive going is bring pressure and i agree ron that uh i think that hawaii is going to throw it here and they've had they've had success with that corner blitz so for hawaii if you're thinking corner blitz you could think some kind of quick slant if they bring the guy on the blitz typically it's a safety coming over the top try maybe a quick slant to see if banker's bringing that corner [Music] so colt brennan continuing to look over the wristband that he has on gentleman right in the middle of the field working desperately trying to pick up some of the paper that has blown out there and that that's kind of like trying to find a needle in a haystack he looks around and every time he picks up one ten more come blowing out there 100 more for that matter so time is back in and it is a first and goal and the ball resting at the two yard line oregon state saying that the ball came loose but the official says the play is dead it'll be second down oregon state three sacks for 20 yards in the ball game so they are maintaining their pace there carnell's the man who made the tackle so hard to play red zone defense against a team like hawaii because with the big backs they still have the ability even though they don't have a true fullback and they don't have a tight end they still have the ability to pound you but you have to be ready for brennan to throw it well this time ilawa and mauia in the backfield 254 and 296. and now a timeout has been called by oregon state well i wonder if oregon state didn't have the personnel they wanted out on the field but that's the hard part ron you have to stay and either nickel and dime the entire game and down on the one foot line it's so typical in football to have your heavy people out there and have five defensive linemen four linebackers but you just can't have that against these guys so we're going to take a timeout 11 50 left until halftime seven to nothing oregon state hawaii threatening [Music] well seven to nothing to oregon state a gentleman right there good friend of a good friend of dr jerry punch one of his sideline passes today oregon state is not going to be charged with a time out on that last play there was confusion he was simply coach riley was trying to ask a question and they thought he wanted a timeout so they have now termed it an official time out and oregon state will not be charged see if they run it or pass it if they're going to run it big nate ilawa touchdown [Applause] with a really good block [Applause] another little man who was picking up the paper he's gonna be he's got a lifetime job right now forrester to attempt the extra point and he's got it so we are tied 11 27 left in this opening half oregon state seven and hawaii seven it's the most magical time of the year experience advanced performance and technology at acura's drive home for the holidays sales come out of the stands dan kelly prepares to kick it off yard deep in the end zone lawson lawson breaks the tackle he's gone it's counted up 50 40 30 20 10 5 touchdown oregon state and unofficially i'm going to say 101 yards it'll be 100 is all they'll give it [Applause] well hawaii got stacked up on themselves ron as lawson goes to run they're they're all the way across and the safety never got over the top the two safeties got up into the line so as soon as lawson broke it there was nobody home well the school record is 100 yards tim alexander 1998 against sc and uh ray torolli against ucla kick it off for oregon state gonna kick it on the ground 25 30 35 and return almost to the 40-yard line and let's go down to the sideline and dr jerry punch jerry well ron the back 10 has six contracted bowls here in the postseason and it took a little bit of a tumble a little bit of a change today take a look at the pacific life holiday bowl california and texas a m the sun bowl oregon state against the big east big 12 team the purevision las vegas bowl are going to byu ucla and florida state a great matchup in the emerald bowl and of course here in the sheraton hawaii bowl hawaii and arizona state and the rose bowl today usc against a bcs opponent there so that all changed today with usc losing to ucla okay jerry brennan dumps the ball off gets a middle screen and that's ilava alawa lost a hit gear i bet your partner was a defender who lost a headgear on the play as the tackle was made by isaiah cook number 12. well it's it's nice that ilawa can play some tonight ron with that hill bruce a sixth year senior you mentioned he's from stafford virginia his father who was in the marines was transferred before his senior year at north stafford high school out here to the islands and decided that he wanted to come here was going to virginia tech to be a defensive back and ended up here it'd be a shame on senior night if he weren't able to play yeah that's for sure [Applause] picked up about six and a half yards in that last play colt a little too far on that pass right there incomplete and it was best as the man that he was intending it for and it'll be third down and i love the reaction of colt brennan he knew he missed it and you just don't see that very much on an out route uh cole brennan is usually right on the money see his numbers tonight 10 to 14 129 yards and they've seen pressure a lot on third down and the receivers all for hawaii they read that and they'll break it off quickly wouldn't be surprised if this is some type of slant over here to the three three wide receiver side [Applause] chipped in the box on this play that pass caught at the 40-yard line stepping out of bounds quickly is [Applause] and it's a chad mock who just come into the lineup senior out of right here in honolulu have not seen him very much uh tonight well this colt brennan saw one-on-one on that side and just makes an excellent throw on the back shoulder of mock that's the second time we've seen that ron when when brennan sees that the defensive back does not turn and watch him he knows he can throw it behind him because the receiver is watching him the whole way blitz coming right up the middle collision there as uh cornell came in and bumped into the quarterback and i drew a reaction from the crowd yeah they don't want them to hit their quarterback too much very protective out here on the islands of cole brennan false start number 75 offense five yard penalty remains first down oh there is no seven well that goes along with the mystery timeout the fumble that was passed that was in the past uh could have been hercules 65 maybe [Applause] samson satellite is uh the center he's number 64. so side by side they play first down and 15. and this is ilava has a blocker in front puts the head down and fights his way to around the 36 and that's payton coming up to make the stop of that free safety position game track tonight colt brennan and more for oregon state with the touchdown pass to his tight end and then the long kickoff return flossing goes 100 yards to put his ball club on top 14-7 and that's how we stand right now as the clock runs almost under nine minutes to play in his opening half and the tackle this time again dorian smith is there to make the stop so hawaii running the football much more tonight and to try to keep oregon state's defense off valentine i suppose and ilawa is such a good weapon and here on third and short because he is so powerful i wouldn't be surprised ron because it's been so effective just use him again see that is what's a reversal 16 minutes time of possession normally hawaii is on the short end because they score so quickly short drop pass batted into the air and in fact it was cold brennan who went back over and tried to make a reception of the batted wall and i think this is a position where june jones will go for it dan kelly has already missed two field goals in this swirling wind and you're on the 32 if you punt the ball and it goes into the end zone which it most likely will you'd only gain 12 yards of field position so this is a great opportunity to go for it here on four so fourth down and the warriors will go for it just over a yard to pick up the first you see their conversions on the season seven of 18. [Applause] blitz and coach is going to hold on to it five 10 15 first and ten they'll have it at the 13-yard line brian payton saved what could have been a touchdown you know you mentioned earlier ron when brennan took off that he doesn't lack the speed he's actually a very good runner he's their second leading rusher and in the passing offense you wouldn't think that because in college football sacks take away rushing yards and how many times do you expect to see a run and shoot based offense run an option but that's exactly what brennan's athleticism gives you he just gives you that other wrinkle how do you defend it well that's a good thing the headache that it gives the defensive coordinator because normally the quarterback is not a guy who is accounted for unless you're facing one of the super runners uh in college football 19 yards on that last play going for the end zone got a man wide open it's a little too far for dickerson i mean ross was there he had beaten his men and the ball looked his old was thrown a little late and it was a little too far and he threw it flat he threw that ball and there you just saw right as we cut back brendan tapping himself in the chest he knew he threw this ball a little flat so dickerson couldn't run underneath of it now it's a windy night and so brennan's probably thinking keep your ball a little lower than normal but he knew he needed to get a little more air under that down at this end of the field though you remember the pass that moore threw with the long pass and it went almost 10 yards over the receiver's head obviously it is really taken off going in that direction second down ilaba bounces it outside at the 10 at the five and he will bounce his way literally to almost the three yard line hard to believe that this was 185 pound slot wide receiver in north stafford high school in stafford virginia six years ago isn't it we talked to him yesterday and i thought that was hey how about what's the fastest that you ever ran in the 40s at a 4-3-8 how much did you weigh he said 185. but you know it's amazing ron how quick he is for 254 pounds you'd expect him to be a bruiser but he's actually an avoid runner he likes to bounce it to the outside and make people miss almost went to virginia tech sample in motion steps up under pressure looking he's going to carry a touchdown cult brennan [Applause] he's not going to know until tomorrow how close he was to being sacked by van orso orso did an excellent job battling over that left side of that offensive line and brendan just got away from forester to attempt the extra point trying to put us back into a tie situation and he does have a feeling that the defensive staff for oregon state is saying fellas that was way too easy on that drive right there 14 oregon state 14 hawaii we'll be right [Applause] [Music] back [Music] [Applause] [Music] the world of learning excellence diversity and opportunity ten campuses on islands of tropical splendor the most unique educational experience on earth the university of hawaii system explore a place where amazing things happen where the world's biggest challenges are faced every day [Music] and yet it feels just like home oregon state university so we are back and uh what just happened is the ball blew off the team and probably it is a good thing that the ball blew off the t because a red hat had moved and they had already started to play football but we are getting near the holiday season so lucy has to knock the ball off the tee occasionally well look at these numbers 18 minutes and 36 seconds total yards 229 and 38 plays this kickoff is going to go two yards deep and again it's lawson and lawson puts the head down running hard and is going to be tackled just shy of the 25. [Applause] [Music] well you know coming out to the island with colt brennan junior quarterback it's going to be a back and forth game because of the kickoff return we have not seen oregon state's offense on the field much i think they need to with 6 43 left hand the ball off to bernard get evanson bernard into this game shrink this clock don't get too conservative you still want to go down and score but by morgan said i'd love to have a bunch of zeros on the clock when i'm done with this drive [Applause] vandenberg one of the tight ends more retreats to throw sends it got his man and that's going to be good to reuben jackson again but just sitting here thinking has been a while since the oregon state offense has been on the field because of the 100 yard kick return and then the long drive by hawaii to take it back down the field to tie it and i wouldn't be surprised at all if matt moore the senior quarterback starts working the play clock a little bit get it down into the under 10 seconds before he snapped but you i think he would have shot a new they got to get the ball to sami stratton he is far too good at what he does straight ahead with the running play out to around the 40-yard line as bernard [Applause] aluminium is the man making the tackle salomon elementia sophomore out of los angeles [Music] and bernard is the guy that has to carry it dr punch's report right at the beginning of the game talked about the difference when bernard is running well for oregon state this year and he's going to have to be the difference in this one just checking with our statistician and starter does not have a catch in this ball game tonight and we are about to go under five minutes left in this opening head [Applause] denver again in motion more retreats to throw sings it out has this one complete and it's just the man i was talking about sammy on the spot were the case here and the junior out of roseville at california makes the reception well everybody at oregon state was wondering how they were going to replace mike haas and of course mike had almost 3 000 yards receiving over the last two seasons in corvallis but strotter the junior done just that leads to pac-10 in receiving yards second team all pac-10 selection last week and it's really turned himself into a fine return man as well on punts you see the average per catch he is extremely valuable to them comes a blips off the corner straight ahead with the running play breaks it big a gain of 10 yards on that first down play by bernard and it's adam leonard who put the stop on him doc punch what do you got for us well rhonda before every game evans and bernard go saw a ritual in the locker room where he gets down and he says a prayer that he honors his mom who joe sent liberius who died of thyroid cancer before he entered high school he says his mom is his inspiration and he tells her what he's going to do for her today and then right before he goes out to play the game he puts her initials jl on the back of his gloves he said today i told her this one is for you a very inspired young man i spoke to just before he came on the field to play this game tonight okay good story powers the man in motion and they give it again to bernard and he cracks his way inside the 30 to close to the 29. there was some late jousting going on after the play the reason for the reaction from the crowd now jeremy perry a local guy on oregon state's offensive line down field [Applause] it's a left guard as he gets up boy he is a powerful man play is over yeah they should have thrown a flag there you the umpire pulls him away ron but you really should have thrown a flag and coach cavanaugh brings him over sits him down [Applause] back in the pocketboard near sideline got a man open got it for the touchdown and there is jackson reuben jackson got those quarterbacks turned completely around along with the safety and it is touchdown oregon state there's paddock and newberry over there both of them went for the ball and misjudged it patek and newberry both not nearly close enough and turned around and you see reuben jackson and give a lot of credit to the offensive line for a nice job of blocking to protect the quarterback men more [Applause] extra point right down the middle three minutes and 26 seconds left until halftime and our new score is oregon state 21 and hawaii 14. they're hungry watch the safety ball tech he's just going to take a bad angle ron he's going to come entirely too flat as he turns to make a play on the ball he just never saw the receipt he also took the cornerback out of the place he's as good as a blocker well he just never he never saw where the receiver jackson was and he's got to adjust to the receiver because of course that's where the ball is being thrown 75 yards and six plays using up just under three and a half minutes and more six of eight 96 yards two touchdowns jackson three receptions for 53 yard and moore completed six in a row so i talked about their offense being on the sideline for a pretty good time right there they uh they heat it up in a hurry i was just gonna say they left enough time on the clock for hawaii they left enough time on the clock for hawaii to score twice so with two timeouts at 326 this is this normal course of business for hawaii pickerson and lane the two deep men and this is a spinner that is caught high in the air and picked up by the blocking back at the 25 and out to the 27-yard line and let's go down to the sideline to check in again with jerry punch well ron in the span of a year matt moore has gone from being jeered to cheer to be considered careless to being being flawless take a look at the evolution of a quarterback 2005 11 td's 19 interceptions he tied for the unenviable task of being the worst in the country and this year 13 touchdowns only six interceptions and his two years by the way ucla four touchdowns six interceptions he's become a much more seasoned quarterback making quicker and better decisions on the fly all right jerry we get to see the warriors offense again that is a sample who resets himself bottom of your screen short drop out of the backfield got this one complete and uh derek doggett it comes over to make the stop reese davis let's check in with you you're still awake hey ron i'm still here taco bell studio update for those who might have missed it usc and ucla trojans driving for a go ahead score and eric mcneal of ucla snuffs it out and ends usc's national title hopes bruins win the game 13-9 okay reese thanks so much boy a lot of people shocked over that one out here on the islands they were that was the only thing they would talk about other than tonight's ball game here against oregon state second down sings this one out in the flat got to complete the rivers and the ball came loose and now here comes a lead flag here it's got to be i could think that would be over there ron as a personal foul well he was looking and discussing brandon hughes was over there fighting for the ball with rivers but also he said something to victor butler see if he'll give us a number on the jersey apologize to victor that was it was not him the ball does come out from rivers he goes rayton and gets it and here comes drayton came in late the whistle must have had to have blown because the player was down with the ball [Applause] so running play here's the lava turns the corner blocker in front and is going to be stopped at the 46-yard line that's a gain of about eight and it's uh brian payton who is there to make the tackle [Applause] hawaii needs to get going a little bit with two timeouts they're able to run some but now they're coming right up to the line of scrimmage as the clock continues to melt ilawa goes out of the ball game so they'll bring in another wide receiver no beggie pardon mauia number 34 reagan the other tailback checks into the lineup here comes a blitz off the corner pass is caught at the 45 by bess bess breaks the tackle did he get out of bounds no the official says spin the clock they'll stop it momentarily for the first down to move the chains but he's down at the 34. bass is so good with the ball in his hands ron watch how quickly when he gets the ball he starts to make moves and make people miss this is why june jones said he may end up being the best receiver he's ever coached and you're talking about guys like andre risen and stuff i mean that's a lot that's pretty high talking from a guy who's a head coach in the nfl 55 seconds left until halftime going through his reach throws this one away did he get it complete yes and the official this is unbelievable says wind the clock he didn't get out of bounds he got knocked three yards out of bounds and because he wind the clock june jones had to take a time out there [Applause] so a timeout has been called by hawaii they stopped the clock with 41 seconds showing on the clock well this is one brennan may have wanted to throw away you got to save these timeouts thrown in front of the sticks not quite sure why they would wind the clock there never mind player was knocked out of bounds [Applause] coming up at halftime no troy in glendale uh a mountainous victory and also wake awakens i just want to say one thing jim grobe i know that there are a lot of people and there are a lot of different competitions for national coach of the year but i tell you what if jim grove is not coach of the year with what he has done with a wake forest team that is talent talented yes but when you lose your starting quarterback your first tailback then you lose your second tail back and the third one it you move in from wide receiver and he gets dinged and you don't have him for a game and you win your conference championship i'll tell you what my hats off and what a classy guy it's a classy operation there and they uh they deserve a huge pat on the back in fact i have a feeling that a lot of demon deacons may still be up down in jacksonville now riley skinner quarterback he's from there i'm sure he's still having a good time cookout pass got this one thrown to best tries to turn the corner gonna be tackled at the 21-yard line and that's piscatelli [Music] well now ron with one timeout in 34 seconds three four plays in there i think you might want to try to get one closer and then take a couple of shots and save that timeout in case you need it for your field goal unit [Music] [Applause] on first down swings it out got it to bryce mullins gonna run out of bounds and then is thrown down i'll tell you something i'm not gonna get into it with the officials but these guys have missed so many things tonight that i mean both ways they're gonna get somebody hurt start throwing some flags you hear the boos from the crowd that young man's out of bounds three yards and he still gets collar hawaii now in great position going out of bounds yeah it looked like a continuation i don't know that bride payton piscatelli was still holding the receiver down just a moment ago there was no flag we saw that the vista comes down here with the offensive lineman when they batch he got called to the side they scored in the next play so this has been a strangely officiated ballgame both ways not just one way both ways i think you've got to think end zone here comes pressure steps up got a ball in the end zone touchdown hawaii and there's a flag down at the one-yard line bess made the reception now let's see what the call was [Music] what an unbelievable job by colt brennan ties bj simmons for the single season touchdown for second place behind david klingler but watch him avoid sees his receiver and gets it off he has such a quick release that's what allows him to make this play ron he can get it out of his hand so quickly he sees it and throws it doesn't have to wind up to toss it boy still 20 seconds showing on the clock so you were right they uh they had plenty of times to score forrester to attempt the extra point and try to tie this one up at 21 apiece but we thought it would be entertaining and that's exactly what it has been both of these teams offensively oregon state on the special teams with the 100 yard touchdown return it's it's been a fun ball game to watch both the coaching staffs have done a really good job in preparing their kids for this one and both quarterbacks playing very efficiently moore six of eight brennan now 18 of 24. can't tell you also how difficult for both of these young men to try to throw the football accurately this wind is gusting and swirling in the stadium tremendously tough [Applause] that was an amazing escape to be able to jump out of the way that quickly and then get his eyes downfield was very impressive forester to attempt the extra point he's got it so we're tied to 21 a piece well let's take a look at the night so far for colt brennan the talk around town has been will he be invited to new york this is the first game they've played on national television all year round it's kind of amazing when you think about it but he's putting on a show granted it's late but i'm sure there's some college football junkies staying up because they haven't had a chance to watch this young man play and he's putting on a show so far well look at past attempts and i think it says just it speaks volumes as to the youngster and his uh accuracy only 491 compared to klingler 643 and 719 for uh for simmons and that's it you know when the week began and we were talking about storylines for this game i said well yeah but they're playing so many more games now but when we did the research and saw that forget about the games how many last pass attempts he's had to get to 52 is just [Applause] staggering well let's see if lawson can do it again he kicked this one on the ground to make sure he does not work his magic and oregon state will have good field position as the clock runs now with 12 and 11. 11 seconds showing on the clock and they'll start to wind that very shortly and oregon state does not seem to be in a real big hurry on the near sideline well if you're going to do anything wrong you'd have to throw it and in this swirling wind why would you even risk that you know you just don't you you don't want a turnover right now just get to get to halftime tied at 21. well now they wind it and it's under 10 seconds [Applause] and you're going to play it conservatively and say hey he may break one for the distance because bernard is certainly capable of that and he's going to be tackled just across midfield by lewis and we are at halftime let's go down to the sideline dr punch coach 21 points in the first half how would you evaluate the play of colton company on offense well they're pretty good pass rush team they got 38 sacks for a reason and with a little more pressure than we were anticipating uh but colts uh you know really competed as you saw and and we missed two field goals which hurt us but hopefully we can get some turnovers by the defense in the second half and turn them into points you've given up 21 points what are your concerns defensively well i mean we haven't defended the pass very well and i thought that we would do a little bit better job of that i knew the running back might get his yards but we got to make some plays in the back end thanks coach okay thanks ron okay jerry thanks so much we are at halftime and our score tied at 21 apiece now let's go to reese davis mark may and lou holtz for the college football halftime report gentlemen [Music] [Applause] so you thought you knew we're gonna who's gonna play for the national championship not if you're number two bcs chaos we'll sort it out for you when we come back this halftime 1-800-640-9393 [Music] usc had beaten ucla seven straight times pete carroll needed to beat the bruins one more time he'd go to the national championship game bruins had a seven nothing lead this pass incomplete from patrick cowan but holding in the end zone that's a safety gets usc on the board 7-2 now later in the second quarter still 7-2 john david booty to the freshman cj gabriel he's going to dump it off to the freshman here and watch cj gable he avoids the tackle there he's going to take it 16 yards for the first down for usa and gable now doing it on the ground well ucla had only given up one touchdown their last two games and they gave up one to gable here put the trojan's head 9-7 it was only the seventh rushing touchdown the bruin d had allowed all season long cowan escapes the pressure and finds marcus everett that would set up a brewing field goal ucla back on top 10-9 first play of the fourth quarter a fourth and one and gable is stuck by that bruin d that allowed under two yards for kerry to the trojans on the day 13-9 ucla lead cowan gets drilled by ray malwaluga what a stick right there wow crushing blow but coward just bounces up saying yeah i'm ready to play and then plenty of emotion on both sides bruins ready to answer the bell they were offsetting penalties for the wolfing and jumping at the hash mark two minute mark third down play for usc booty steve smith first down usc marching toward victory they thought until eric mcneil made a spectacular individual play and an athletic play by eric media look at there he's got the hospital the president of mine to come down with the interception for the bruins the bruins and tried to run out the clock but were forced to punt it away one more time any hopes that sc head and heavy one to the end zone ended when aaron perez unleashed a 62 yarder i think you got to get on that ball a lot earlier a lot earlier the final moments desperation heave went awry and ucla knocks usc out of the national title picture they did a fine job you know hats off to carl did a great job to get this win today you know it could happen and it did and they did a fine job to get that done so uh you know there's a million things we can talk about right now we just didn't get our win today you guys are known for so much offense how were they able to limit you offensively yeah it just didn't happen today dwayne walker did a great job and uh their whole staff so really just got to credit them today i thought that's all i can tell you what the national championship hope's now gone what do you tell your guys in the locker room we'll go to rose bowl we'll go rose bowl make it make it a great event for us and and do everything we can have a great time you know carol's goal every year is to get his team to the rose bowl carl dorel said we'd like to get pete his wish he did he did look at the difference pete mentioned dwayne walker he's the new defensive coordinator for the bruins this year what a world of difference in the stats from last year's game against the trojans when they got trout 66-19 i understand there's no liner there's no bush there's no white it's a different usc team look they had scored 20 points or more in 63 consecutive games that's an ncaa record to put that in perspective the team in second place had only done it 37 times a remarkable effort by the bruin defense but maybe some other factors just made it a little too tough for sc to be as sharp as they've been the last few weeks now listening to pete carroll talk here's the guy just lost a chance to win a national championship and he handles it with class and he congratulated ucla on the tremendous effort as a football coach you can only have a team emotionally ready maybe three or four weeks maximum for the last three weeks usc has had to play oregon after they had gotten beat they had to play california in a big game then they had to play notre dame now they're going over to play a team a slot that had 66 points run up on them the previous year they were not emotionally ready and it's not anybody's fault you just can't be at that peak on the other hand ucla had an open date they were ready they were physical they played tough they had great leadership had a great game plan and they played a marvelous game and deserved to win i think the key was the defense ucla's defense by far what they did to the offense if usc was magnificent in this game and dwayne walker the defensive coordinator had a great game plan harassing quarterback john david booty when he was in the pocket flushing him out making sure that he didn't get in the comfort zone that he normally gets in with this offense and they stuffed the run they were all over the place the intensity it was matched by ucla play after play after play and here's the key they took away the big plays from the usc offense their leading receiver is fred davis they're tied in with six receptions 68 yards dwayne jarrett only had four receptions in this game i think that was huge but it was the intensity that was matched by the ucla defense that won the football game and so the loss now by usc opens the door for perhaps florida to make it to the national title game although they would have to jump michigan but more pressing to the gators on saturday initially winning the sec title game against arkansas florida jumped to a 10-0 lead and late in the first half chris league percy harvin the freshman 17-0 and it appeared that the route was on look at the scoreboard in the georgia dome now the gators know that the door is wide open for them if they can win so what do they do promptly through two interceptions including this egregious pick thrown by chris lee to anton robinson on the show and he takes it all the way in it was poor execution on florida's part but a great play by robinson a couple of bad plays by florida and arkansas just trying to be neighborly returned the favor reggie fish reggie let it go stay on the 10 yard line don't even look for it once it goes over your head wandy pierre-louis touchdown florida that's his name juan de pierre-louis and then reverse pass andre caldwell take casey gators up 38-28 come on irvin got to be ready show me some dental work urban through the sec champion urban 38-28 so now florida coming through who should play in the national championship game in your estimation against ohio state florida or michigan i'd have to say the university of florida with a lot of good reasons but first of all they're conference champions michigan is a great football team they had the opportunity to play against ohio state they did not win their conference florida won their conference they deserve the right to play they may not be flashy they may not get style points but they do know how to win they play very solid football they play together as a team and they come up with a big play they have some young football players and some old ones that make plays i like to say florida and the reason why i'm going to have to stay for is because they earned this victory and they played hard throughout the entire game yes they made some mistakes not often jesse made some mistakes on defense but it was a complete game by florida they scored 38 points that's the most points this florida team has scored against the division 1a team since september they finally put it together as a team effort put points on the board their defense stepped up when they had to and you look at their body of work the teams that they defeated this year tennessee lsu now arkansas in the championship game i think if you match the bodywork against michigan it's got to be florida that should play for the national championship they faced ten bowl eligible teams had the number one schedule in the nation that was prior to the game against arkansas but i think the question is going to be remember two-thirds of the formula for the bcs the voters in the polls how many are going to switch and put florida into the number two slot we'll sort all of that out for you on our bowl selection special espn2 8 o'clock eastern time on sunday night a team that just barely missed that realm champions of the pac-10 against lsu or michigan if they don't make the title game i guarantee you ohio state will be playing in the bcs title game that's a very good way to get out there i got that call now call 1-800-874-9138 [Music] so we are back our game tied at 21 apiece between oregon state and hawaii and ed i mentioned toward the end of the second quarter that we thought we'd be entertained and we have uh it's been just that and it take us through both sides if you're the head coach for hawaii you know what did you say to your uh charges well exactly i think what he was saying to dr punch that they knew that evanson bernard would get his yards but i don't think that they expected matt moore to play as well as he has yeah jackson the wide receiver that they hadn't seen much on film played very well so i i think they have to bring a little more pressure on more all right now oregon state you know what does coach riley say to his guys because you look down 269 yards you think hawaii well they have not had one of their kind of first halves that's still that's on course to go at 540 yards i think defensively oregon state has to get back to the blitz ron every time that they stopped hawaii when they were moving the ball was when they brought some pressure especially with the corners and as we take a look at the numbers the time of possession totally out of whack but that has a lot to do with the 100-yard kickoff return but offensively i think oregon state needs to hand the ball off to bernard this is the guy if they want to win they don't want to be in a shootout run i just don't think that they can hang in with colt brennan and his troops for hawaii i think they have to get bernard involved it was interesting i went down to uh the hawaii broadcast and visited with their play-by-play man and i asked him if it was always this windy in the stadium he said we always have a presence of wind because of being right here on the pacific as we are but this tonight is inordinately strong and that he said you know the accuracy of colt brennan still is amazing and i'll tell you what let's say on the other hand that what moore has done as well in this win has truly been spectacular tonight because you got to be here to understand exactly what i'm talking about we're holding everything that we need to secure i've had to grab you a couple of times i thought you were going to fly backwards well here are the comparisons as far as the numbers in the first half six of eight 96 yards for more two touchdowns and for brennan 18 of 24 195 yards and uh brennan is again we talk about his accuracy devon bess get to know his name just a sophomore so you have a junior quarterback throwing to bass a sophomore they're going to have another huge year next year but i think the thing that catches people by surprise is how active an athlete brennan is ran the option uh got down the field almost scored had did have one rushing touchdown but that last one where he dodged the rush came up and kept his eyes downfield i think that's the thing that kind of catches people off guard a little bit kelly prepares to kick it off and this time he's going to be kicking in the direction of where the gale is coming from and these are the gentlemen i mentioned back in the first half that lawson equaled tonight alexander and tarouli this kick is gonna hit inbounds and then go out of the side of the end zone so there will be no penalty and let's check in down on the sideline with dr jerry punch jerry hey ron talk with mike riley coming out of the locker room at halftime for oregon state and he was obviously pretty pleased with the way his defense played in the first half against the highest scoring offense in the nation but they said you know my big concern in the second half is going to be on my offense i want to try to mix up the offense a little more instead of staying with one or the other as far as a run of the past i want to mix it up and get them a little more off balance and defensively we got to get some more turnovers offensively so we don't have the mix i would like we really need to try to get them off balance a little bit here early in the second half okay jared will keep an eye on that and see what they're able to do against this uh hawaii defense they scrimmage from their [Applause] [Music] down and he's gotten complete good for the first down at the 31-yard line there's strotter and i've mentioned several times in the first half and i say again it's good to see that happen because i think they've got to have him as part of the formula if they're going to win this football strata was part of the reason that things started going better they had that 2-3 start and it was really a loss against washington state that the team started buying into the fact that they were better than they were playing and strawder raised his level at the same time [Applause] [Music] good looking his numbers right there not only a smart football player he does very well academically at the oregon spring straight ahead with the run is bernard and you can see he's going to have a gain of close to eight yards on that play and it's purcell who was at the bottom of that stack to make the tackle well the first two plays on first down are exactly what dr punch was talking about you throw on one then you run on the other i i think what coach riley was alluding to was in the first half it was either a run drive or a pass drive i think he wants to see a little of each in each drive because if they could keep that balance going that will eat some clock as well [Applause] bernard he'll have it out across the 45 to the 47-yard line patek making the tackle yeah that that was the the thing i was going to mention as well is the fact that it can not only help you but to run the clock and keep hawaii off the field boy that's quite a stick right there by patak bernard is so quick ron he's got that remember we saw kenny irons earlier in the year with that one foot plants and he's back the other way he does not stutter step through the hole powers in motion play action got a man wide open the ball is tipped and almost intercepted and i'll tell you oh my goodness potek is the man who got a hand on it but leonard peters was in position and he would still be running leonard peters a very interesting story another one of the youngsters we visited with yesterday has played through all kinds of injuries this year as you see potak on the drop and then peter's cutting back behind peters is a polynesian dancer a very high order and many people say if he doesn't make it or even after pro football that he will make a heck of a great living here on the islands just doing that being a professional dancer short gain on this play it's going to be third down now you saw the head gear come off alama francis also purcell helping out on that tackle [Applause] purcell's the man who lost the hit here oh and now oregon state behind the sticks at third and seven jerry glenville has not brought a lot of pressure they run out of a base 3-4 i think coach glenville is going to bring some pressure on this one only the third time tonight that they have had a third down situation sets dumps it out and boy the hit was made immediately incomplete pass malala michael milano who is a senior out of right here in honolulu is the man who came up and made the hit well and moore got anxious he had time in that pocket glenville did not bring pressure and the offensive line did a sensational job and moore came down to the running back too soon he had newton a tight end running and out route down the field this is the first time that oregon state has punted in the ball game [Applause] high pass but he gathers it in well and here's the boot end over end gonna hit it to 10 and takes a huge oregon state bounce folks that ball just went out of bounds at the one yard line loomis with the kick 49 yards but the damage that is done he has hawaii 99 yards away let's take a timeout tied at 21. we'll be right back when you make your living strapped to a 2000 pound bird you not only got that's what's so cool about my new to yourself about your future at john hancock we have the products you need to help build protect and sustain the future you've always wanted john hancock the future is yours so we are back i think some shots again from last night at our hotel where they had the lighting of the christmas tree is that the type of dancing that leonard peters does no his he does with fire and also with knives and he talked about he said it is impossible to do that dance without burning yourself he said sometimes your hands get burned very badly from the gasoline i thought wow you'd be better off playing football back in the pocket brandon and that ball just thrown away up the sideline he had dickerson coming with double coverage but i think what he saw being already in the end zone he just threw that one away well you saw the missed field goals early on of course the wind wreaking havoc on these kickers dan kelly who had only missed one kick all year long and uh oregon state lucky to be at a 21-21 tie but so efficient they just you give them the ball and something's gonna happen they're gonna at least attempt to field goal or score a touchdown almost every time so it's second down and 10 from their own one-yard line quick pass throwing at the middle screen and that's sample and he will bring it out to around the four yard line and now it's gonna be third down [Music] sampled a senior at a washington township he was a walk-on originally and as we said back in the first half had a huge ball game against nevada right here at the aloha stadium had a 63-yard touchdown pass where the defense got confused and he just was wide open wouldn't be surprised at another flanker screen here ron don't want to spend too much time with your quarterback in the end zone glitch coming off the corner sets quickly throws the ball got a man complete out of the 21 yard line that's best [Applause] i mean when bess catches the football folks he is full tilt in one step he snatches it ron you hear scouts in the nfl talk about guys who catch with their hands like that when the ball hits their hands it just stops instantly they don't have to double clutch it it doesn't move around he absolutely just snatches it out of the air biscuitelli is the man who made the tackle maliwa will leave the game as the running back dickerson has checked back in and it is dickerson lining up in the backfield as a tailback this time and they give it to him a run to the right side nice job van or so jeff was right there to knock him down for about a three yard loss well it's been another huge night for devon bess best over a thousand yards receiving on the year eight catches for 89 yards already and we've still got 10 33 to go in the third quarter this is a guy june jones took a bit of a chance on he got in some trouble out of high school was incarcerated for 15 months and that's what june jones has done though he said you know i find guys that maybe we wouldn't have a chance on and they have a little past and we bring them in and we work very hard to keep them on the straight and narrow [Applause] rivers rivers bumped out of bounds hard at the 40-yard line [Applause] piscatelli is the man who makes the tackle [Applause] [Music] well rivers glad to have him back had a big year in 2004 missed last year he was academically ineligible and all of these guys are on bess grice mullen they're also good after the catch not a lot of throws down the field in the run and shoot so your guys have to be good with the ball in their hands and all of these guys are [Applause] from the 42 we've got this one complete gonna be a gain of about 10 yards to sample tackle made immediately by francis [Applause] you know you mentioned that sample was a walk-on and when he got here could barely catch but june jones just stuck with this guy stuck with this guy now a senior and you see him just like all the other receivers they catch the ball with their hands they don't body it and that's what makes this offense so efficient is these guys they catch the ball on the run and they're still running away from defenders sampled a couple of catches for 16 yards tonight oh they're spread out all over the field again blitz coming off the corner but after hurry and he dumps it right up the middle on the screen ilawa makes the catch and will take it down to around the 43-yard line dorian smith who's had a nice ball game tonight we've called his name several times made the tackle he's going to come out of the lineup right now well we'll take a look at colt brennan's pass chart and it'll show you why the receivers have to be so good after the catch they just don't throw the ball down the field very much it's a quick rhythm passing attack you were the first when you're watching film about how quickly the ball gets out and they just they don't want to throw it down the field much they want these receivers these athletic receivers get the ball and run with it well you also uh lessen the likelihood of sacks the defensive lines simply can't get there what you have to do is put linebackers in in position to cut off rounds as that's going to be another first down and now all of a sudden sample has become the favorite target and for some reason they have found out that defending him they're not doing such a good job you know the only way you could really stop this offense and stop means hold it to 21-28 points is if you play man coverage all the time and you're able to get pressure and oregon state choosing to play zone and it was funny yesterday cole brennan said june jones loves zones we'll figure out a way to pick apart his own and that's exactly what's happening so far this evening tied at 21. hawaii driving here's that middle screen into rivers rivers inside the 30-yard line it's gonna be a gain of about eight and a half yards on this play and now hawaii it seems as though getting into a rhythm as oregon state has a player down that's one of their best pass rushers jeff van they don't want to lose him of course van orso will always be remembered as the guy who deflected john david booty's two-point conversion against usc to preserve the 33-31 win he's a very consistent ball player that the coaches say you know equally adept at at stopping the run as also to being a good pass rusher hopefully he is okay and will be back on the field shortly well colt brennan's really in some rhythm right now ron and and they have not blitzed oregon state has not blitzed on this drive i think it may be time to try to get him out of rhythm with a blitz [Applause] well it looks as though the head coach called that time out i don't know if he had the wrong personnel grouping in there for what he wanted uh called or what but uh june jones was right there and hollered out to the officials that we want to time out correct myself there was the one blitz it was that corner blitz but they had the perfect play they had the shovel pass set up on that exact play and brennan was able to get that off and that's what that that's what you do with this offense if you think the pressure is going to come it's almost impossible to defend that little shovel it's almost like a little screen inside [Music] sunday night joined rhys davis mark may and lou holmes for a complete breakdown of each and every college football bowl game the 2006 bowl selection special on espn at 10 eastern also available in high definition on espn hd and on espn2 at 8 eastern well the interesting one will of course be the big one january 8th in glendale arizona i really think florida has a chance ron i think that the computers are going to love that win today against arkansas and i think they're going to get close enough in the human polls to michigan to make it very interesting seven straight completions for brenham now and brennan 73 yards on those seven straight that he has completed gives it to illawa tries to bounce it outside and he does 25 at the 20 still rolling and he'll be down to the 19-yard line when we did boise and nevada last week and it was interesting and talking to the nevada players they said don't be fooled these guys can run the ball and they said they kept running this big guy we just couldn't do much with him and that's the big guy they're talking about nate ilawa well and you know he has that he'll bruise that from the end of the game last week against purdue and that great comeback win at home for hawaii but the way he's planting and pushing off of that it doesn't seem to be bothering yeah he seems to be getting better as the game goes on he's replaced on his play by maui this is gonna go for a sec and there is dorian smith again nice job by him tonight he's going to come right out of the ball game you seem pat himself on the head gear and he's one of the guys that one of the five contributors on defense that oregon state brought in during the offseason from junior college and smith has really turned up his game he helps this team be one of the best sac teams in the country they are the best in the pac-10 four tonight 42 on the season show it's a second down now and very long they got to take this ball all the way down to the nine and a half yard line if they want to keep it going blitz coming off the corner shovel pass turning the corner and he finally will be tackled at around the 14-yard line so it's gonna be five yards still to go to get the first down well he runs exactly the same as ilawa they're both short thick guys and you just can't tackle them high same two stiff arms yeah that look helpless but uh they're more than helpless yeah they because they're so big and compact you have to go you said it their ankles but at least at their knees you just have to submarine guys that are this big and this powerful there's a good look at reagan former defensive lineman blitz coming right up the middle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] but that was the worst decision that we've seen colt make tonight yeah he was trying to get bass bass was coming back towards him [Applause] he had broken off of his route and they're calling a timeout maybe to review this play [Applause] i don't think june jones is i don't think june jones is convinced that piscotelli caught that ball clean the play has been challenged by the hawaii coats [Applause] here's a look at it right there and i'm not sure from that angle that's yeah it looked like he may have gotten his hands under it i'll tell you by the reaction of his teammates that's the reason i thought yeah that there was no question because they reacted like yeah that he did have an interception well i think that first look was a better look let's see if this one's any better it looked to me like his right hand got under the ball a bus that best fell coming out of his break ron yeah it looks like he got his hands on that sure does but but you know brennan was throwing to a spot and it was actually devon bess stumbled coming out of his break so it was actually a stumble by the wide receiver let's go down the sideline dr jerry punch what can you add to the situation jerry well guys as soon as the interception or proposed interception was made colt brennan turned to his head coach june jones and signaled it was not good he went over to plead his case and that's what prompted june jones to make the challenge his quarterback came through and said the ball hit the turf he was signaling no good with his hands ran over to the coach and that's the coach respecting his quarterback's decision opted for the challenge okay jerry thing that's great hustle right there [Applause] after reviewing the play the ruling on the field stands it is confirmed it's an interception first down well that's a tough one you always want to say it's a quarterback's fault but best coming out of his break and brennan was putting it right on the spot piscatelli the safety over the top takes advantage of a receiver slipping out of his break [Applause] show 14th career interception boy in the way of hawaii was moving the ball there mike riley has to a big sigh of relief because it looked like it was a foregone conclusion that they were going to come away on points there [Applause] oh the crowd trying to help him out here first down at the 20-yard line moore sets deep in the pocket gonna go on top has a man at the 40. he has got a stronger at the 10 at the five touchdown don't say i didn't tell you so but that's the man that they gotta keep getting the ball to right there and he that's exactly what he was talking about big play all over that guy and in one play following a big turnaround with the interception oregon state on the board again well and that's just straight one on one it was a stop and go and gerard lewis bid on it the impressive part though ron after the catch strata runs away from lewis lewis was actually gaining ground as strata had to catch that ball but as soon as he got it he increased his lead over lewis but louis bent on the little fake to the hitch over the top starting with the extra point attempt he's got it and with 508 left to play in the third quarter our new score is oregon state 28 in hawaii 21. let's take a timeout started with an 80-yard touchdown reception [Music] there are no fans in the stands no one watching go ahead hit the showers you did good good is program and had 26 consecutive losing seasons in 1998 they posted their best record in 27 years they left for the nfl for san diego he came back in 2003 back-to-back bowl game wins in las vegas in the inside bowl 2005 the bulitnikov and groszo award winners and this year they finished third in the pac-10 and have a chance for their first 10-win season since 2000 what a job he has done in corvallis boy here here couldn't agree more [Applause] shovel pass with a head of steam and if you don't think 250 pounds can ramble just go back and take one look at that [Applause] oh there's a flag in the hawaii backfield for roughing the passer so they're going to tack that on to the end of the run [Applause] hard to see it with all the paper up there on the field [Applause] 15 yards assessed from the end of the run automatic push down ilawa can really fly though ron when he gets out into that area it's amazing how how quick he is for 255 pound guy [Applause] [Music] so just like that with the penalty and the 34-yard advancement by ilawa they have now flipped the field so to speak on oregon state [Applause] steps up drills the ball got it and best will take it inside the 15 to the 14. kristic makes the tackle you know one of the things yesterday we were visiting with june jones that he talked about that he does with his team is he puts a lot of pressure on them internally he allows cameras into the locker room he tells him how good they are and he compares them to some of the great players he coached in the nfl he does that on purpose because he wants them ready for these types of moments down 28-21 national tv how are you going to react and it's not new to them this doesn't feel new to hawaii about to go under four minutes to play third quarter there's that middle screen again still dancing around as sam hope the champion's gonna wind up losing yardage an abundance of it after he continued to run behind the line of scrimmage yeah at some point you just need to fall forward and not try to lose six yards on that one five yeah it is going to be about six yards on the play and there's june jones who acts as his own offensive coordinator of course this run and shoot offense he started running at portland state under mouse davis who's now his running backs coach so these two guys have been at it for a long time he could call this in his sleep second down line to make is the five yard line hawaii trails it 28-21 here comes it an all-out blitz bad pass from center and he's going to be sacked by dogging way back at around let's see what they're going to say inside the 35-yard line they're lucky they held on to the football well sampson satellite the center making his 52nd career start it wasn't that far off the mark but he threw it a little too hard you know if it's going to be off the mark it's got to be a touch nap and satellite just fired that ball back there and brennan took his eye off it for half a second boy third down and you would like to have this much real estate just to be able to sell here in honolulu you can make a lot of coins off of it [Music] [Applause] well the adrenaline and the momentum says [Applause] that june jones may think about it but i think he should take the points you've got a kicker although he missed two long ones earlier kelly's been automatic this year i think you got to put the points up biscatelli is the man who finally put the stopper on him so this attempt will come from the far hash mark and we will call it officially 27 yards well now they're saying 26 okay [Applause] and he got it so 139 left in the third quarter do score oregon state on top but now by only four [Music] points stop back up turn right turn right straight ahead turn left at intersection destination ahead navigate your [Applause] every time this season carolina finds success they seem to follow it with failure now steve smith and keyshawn johnson's team must play with a playoff urgency with their star on the show the eagles face a must-win at home big playoff implications as the panthers visit the eagles at 8 30 eastern on espn's monday night football so we are back good luck that uh ilawa on the bench played a big part in putting that the team in a position to kick a short field goal here comes kelly [Applause] here's lawson from the goal line i mean somebody turned to flip on a block and then lawson gets flipped got some pretty good hitting going on here tonight well now with more coming out seems like every time oregon state has been going out on the field round they've either been tied or behind now with a lead i think it might be bernard time well hawaii's not leading this ball game we've had three ties but oregon state has been on top all the way and it seems like now it seems like they've just got a little bit of momentum i know as crazy as that sounds it feels like the first time that they might have a little something going more deep in the pocket here comes pressure he's going to run up into the pocket 30 35 slides down he'll have the first down with a gain of about 11 yards jacob patek will be credited with the tackle well jeremy perry the left guard local product who had actually signed a letter of intent to go to hawaii but never delivered it and then decided to go to oregon state he was downfield again ron and he's got to be careful he hit somebody late again that time he's gonna get a personal foul and uh if things get a little too out of hand they may eject them [Applause] 31 minutes to 12 minutes time of possession but that shows that that figure can can be really deceiving straight ahead with the carry is bernard just short yardage about three defenses will make the tackle along with patek evanson bernard has 11 100 yard games in his last 19 but only one in the last four and he's getting towards that with 91 rushing yards as we get towards the end of the third quarter and remember what mike riley told dr punch they want to mix it up run some screens things like that to throw it but i think bernard's got to be a workhorse here going into the fourth quarter four seconds left in the third quarter throws it out to bernard cuts it up at the 40 and he will have the first down nice cut back purcell finally stopping and that is the end of the third quarter so let's take a time out in this wild and high scoring affair we head to the final 15 minutes it's oregon state 28-24 [Music] the panthers rumble with the eagles at 8 30 on espn monday night football [Music] stop back up turn right turn right straight ahead turn left at intersection [Music] i'm dallin hart jr welcome to wrangler jeans company a new generation of wrangler new fits new comfort new styles wrangler jeans company a new generation of wrangler new fits new comfort new style so we are back christmas in hawaii as we mentioned the official tree lighting that happened last evening and uh i believe a parade was that last night or tonight was going to occur well i know those fireworks i think were in my deck last night it got very loud didn't it [Applause] first down from the 48-yard line got a man and he's got it that's powers powers inside the 30-yard line and stopped at about the 27. well this is a really good throw by a senior quarterback powers running the drag and he's got to throw it over the corner but in front of the safety and this is this is at ucla this is what they thought they had with matt moore last year oregon state he still didn't play that well but matt moore has really turned into the quarterback that a lot of people he's from southern california thought he was going to be as a college quarterback first and 10. as he takes it inside the 25 adam leonard there to make the tackle matt moore is a guy ron who we talked about colt brennan all the places he had been before he got to hawaii of course started out at ucla and got injured he was the starter and then was replaced by drew olson and drew olson went on to have a great career so matt left and actually set out a year and was going to go division one double a until the pac-10 changed the rule that said you could transfer within conference and only sit out one year it used to be two so when he came to oregon state he was eligible right away after sitting out that year second now blitz coming from the deep and the secondary pass is underthrown power is the intended receiver but he had to really hustle on that one because of the blitzing defender [Music] alama francis was the man who was applying pressure [Music] lama francis did a great job getting a slap move to the inside and if that last name francis sounds familiar as dad joe francis was a tailback on oregon state's 1957 rose bowl team so he's trying to also play for the packers too and his dad's in attendance for the first time this season third down deep in the pocket goes for it all and caught by newton and they say he's down at the one yard line when you have a tight end newton who missed last year with a very weird tendon injury in his left foot and was a little hesitant but at six foot seven they really missed him last year in the red zone and this is triple coverage [Applause] and when the trailing defender never looks back against a six foot seven tight end kofensis the linebacker didn't have a chance [Music] stronger in motion he'll give it to bernard right side touchdown oregon state with 13 minutes and 10 seconds left and give credit to 38 andy stewart with a paving block on the touchdown run [Applause] [Music] [Applause] excuse me 15 carries 95 yards and a touchdown well that's exactly at the top of the show well the officials and coaches from oregon state these officials ron have they're just having a hard time keeping control of this game i mean the coaches they're all the way down inside the 10-yard line the extra point attempt up and good and now jeremy perry number 62 just went after another hawaiian player well it's starting to get awfully chingy and i think the only way that bill mccabe is going to get control is to start throwing people out ron [Applause] after the cry was over personal foul number 67 defense illegal hands to the face the penalty will be assessed on the kickoff lafayella the nose guard shall must take a timeout 13-10 remaining and oregon state now extends its lead as bernard [Music] scores [Applause] [Music] come to the mercedes-benz dosomethingamazing.com [Music] so we are back and let's uh with the the score 35-24 now look at the quarterback comparisons more 245 yards three touchdowns and brennan 346 yards a touchdown and a very very big interception down around the goal line and that is where hawaii has been so efficient nearly 80 percent of the time they get in the red zone they come away with a touchdown and best came out of his break stumbled a little bit and piscatelli was able to get the interception so he kicked it away and kicked it out of the base of the end zone [Applause] [Music] perry being a 10 to 2 over on the near sideline and this is where colt brennan last week against purdue in this almost this exact same position was able to engineer a comeback they've gotten a lot better comebacks this year than they had been in the past [Applause] see pressure coming off the corner and now whistles and [Applause] flags came out of his stance well and now oregon state ron i think with with an 11-point lead one of the things that colt brennan said that teams have tried to do is play kind of an umbrella a two or three deep zone and just keep everything in front of them to make make hawaii earn it and i think that's where oregon state may be in that position to do that don't know that they need to bring a bunch of pressure make them earn it and see if they can't burn this clock out you see them stepping up right there they wind up with like 10 men in the box and brent's just going to hold on to the football and pick up five yards lerock was over there to force him out [Music] and if you're hawaii you just if you're over near the sidelines you're down two possessions which obviously is not a very big deal with this offense but we know how the new clock works it'll start to melt pretty quickly here in the fourth quarter and so june jones needs to be telling his specialist if you're over the sidelines just go ahead and step out we'd rather you get out of bounds and get an extra yard or two and stay in bounds [Applause] bryce muller because of that lit nice job defensively by appalava because he kept him from picking up the first down gave him a shove back just enough and you're just thinking about first downs stay in your rhythm if you're hawaii and on third and short one of those big uh tailbacks mike to get the call in between the tackles hawaii five of ten on third down conversions tonight [Applause] third down quarterback sneak and the renault had the first down and the reason i think that uh hawaii needs to maybe just hurry up a little bit ron is oregon state has been so efficient on offense they've been able to pretty much do whatever they've wanted they don't have a ton of yards at 351 but the mix of the run and the pass they're not going to get conservative when they come back out on the field regardless of what happens well bernard is consistent enough he's already got 95 yards tonight and a touchdown that two or three first downs and they could run this clock down and out it is intercepted at the 45 by piscatella boy that was a great move by piscatelli 6'3 225 pound free safety he's a big guy you don't expect him to play the pass this well and he undercut the receiver perfectly biscuitelli right here working on the slot comes out of his break believe he's working on he was working one-on-one on dickerson and just cut right underneath of it good read by your senior safety well we'll see if that one right there leads to the nail of the coffin as far as the warriors are concerned under 11 and a half minutes to play but jackson finally turned it up field sure looked like he was going to stop and throw it it sure did well piscatelli he's from boca raton florida and he came out to oregon state first he was a high school teammate of bernard's and uh it was actually bernard evanson bernard who talked piscatelli into coming out for football boca raton high school he's the one who picked off cole brennan for the second time tonight [Applause] that's a loss of about seven maybe eight yards on the play patek is the man who got it it'll piss katella you can see why not only consideration for all conference but why he's considered the best at his uh position but i'll tell you these two interceptions tonight could be you know the difference in this football game as far as oregon state going home with a victory resetting the 25-second clock and let's check in quickly with dr jerry punch jerry you mentioned bernard and piscitelli both with the boca raton florida high school you know bernard wanted to play for miami he wanted to be a hurricane fiscal tele wanted to go to florida state and be a seminole neither one heavily recruited they come out here to oregon state on the west coast 3 000 miles away and both become award-winning players wow yeah something tells me mickey andrews would love to have biscuitelli in that secondary of his pressure's on ball is thrown completely away and i'll tell you what ruben jackson made an extremely smart move to the outside as a late flag comes in he saw that ball was going to fall just helplessly and he knocked the defender down to play to play a little defense himself because that interception would have gone the distance give credit to jerry glenville for a great call he brought adam leonard with matt moore had his back turned to him didn't even see leonard coming until they had ineligible because they were trying to set up a screen of course they're gonna decline that to get the fourth down and matt moore just had to throw that thing away and got it beyond the line of scrimmage that's why they'd call a lineman downfield hawaii actually brought two from the top side but it's the outside man leonard boy leonard's got good speed you know they were young to pass interference number two offense the penalty has declined fourth down oh they got they got jackson for blocking down field because the ball was thrown beyond the line of scrimmage is why they would have called that yeah yeah it makes sense i still think what he did was a smart thing he was making sure that the kid from hawaii did not make the interception which could have cost him six points loomis in the ball game to punt he's been quite a weapon tonight he's come up huge every time they needed a big putt and he fumbles this one and he loses the ball hawaii is gonna have it at their own 43-yard line well loomis is a true freshman and even though it's 13 games into the season you're occasionally going to get a freshman mistake the snap could not have been better by joel cohen [Applause] loomis just dropped it laborn is the man who made the recovery 35-24 oregon state we'll be right back [Music] it's that magical time of year get a special lease offer on a c230 sports college football prime time brought to you by mercedes-benz located on the web at mbusa.com sunset right there well loomis i'm just bragging away on him about how consistent he has been tonight and oh god he just dropped it he just took his eye off the football the snap was good this is the best starting position by hawaii tonight [Applause] quick out pass that's bess yards after the catch that's where he is really really good going to be a play of 11 yards quick and fast good hands good vision he's the whole package ron he really is and last year when he came in as a true freshman and picked up the system very quickly this is a very cerebral system for a wide receiver they have caught 12 touchdown passes in the fourth quarter this year ma eli checks into the ball game number 34. blitz coming right up the middle by oregon state could it go on top man is there and couldn't adjust to it bryce mullet for some reason did not begin to veer to his right that ball was uh close enough i thought to have been caught i don't think he got his eye on it quick enough but as good as brennan was in the in the first half he hasn't been quite that sharp here in the second the interception the one in the end zone where devon best came out of his break a little funky not really his fault but the one where chris cotelli undercut dickerson and then that ball there not uh we're so used to seeing him being uh more accurate than that we missed six in the first half and four here in the second half here comes pressure got a man right over the middle that's dickerson and dickerson will be tackled just shy of the 25 so that brings up third down they're going to take it to the 23. doggett made the tackle and if oregon state had a stop in this ball game they need one right here because we've gone under nine minutes to play well if i'm oregon state i'd be very concerned about that shovel pass ron it's worked almost every time hawaii has run it particularly if you're coming palmell for the quarter absolutely maiwa is in there to the left [Applause] to get him out and coverage the ball thrown in this pot at the 15-yard line and coverage was all over rivers but he still gathered it in and it's a first down hawaii [Music] brandon hughes defensively [Applause] what a great catch by rivers probably could have called hughes for pass interference he never did take his hands off of rivers but rivers did a good job of getting that inside hand free make the catch tonight four of seven inside the red zone clock is about to go under eight minutes and this is what you were talking about you need to kind of get in a hurry there's the shovel pass right up the middle and it's not gonna go for much illawah [Music] caught it but oregon state was right there he said nah foolish wants you know the story anyway butler and lorac combined on the stop right there nice job by then yeah and lorac has been one of the guys for this oregon state defense who's really turned it up in this since that two and three start [Music] show hawaii breaks the huddle comes to the line of scrimmage seems like two minutes ago that i was saying we're going under nine we're now under seven and a half minutes [Applause] see oregon state creeping up here they come and pope gonna hold on to it himself dives for the first down and the official from where he's put his foot down he's gonna have the first down victor butler finally forced him out well it was victor butler coming off the edge who doesn't keep con contained there's just no reason for butler to come all the way down inside backside ends stay as deep as the ball and if you don't know where the ball is stay as deep as the deepest man and that time the deepest man was colt brennan and he just came way down inside so it is a first and goal and the ball is just inside the five-yard line actually they're saying the poor [Applause] looking goes for the end zone that's going to be well overthrown and again tonight even though the win has dropped off some passing going left to right as they are right now oregon state had the same trouble the ball it really takes off on you it's interesting that brennan goes over all the way over to june jones every single time they had some troubles with some communication issues the receivers coming in not knowing exactly what coach jones wanted called so he's changed his system and brennan just immediately goes right over to the head coach between each play his numbers now 34 of 45 376 yards [Applause] right up in the middle there he is touchdown bryce mullen [Applause] [Music] well even though derek doggett is the fastest linebacker for oregon state you're just not going to be able to play with grace mullins in space and of course now hawaii down five going to go for two police now one away from tying the record single season touchdown passes [Applause] i think you're gonna have some kind of crossing route here if there's man coverage i would suspect over to the left some type of rub route with someone coming in and rubbing off and someone breaking to the inside [Applause] quickly [Applause] i can't figure out what they were trying to do dorian smith yeah and you can tell by june jones reaction that that play did not work out like they blew up immediately take a timeout 35 30 our new score oregon state introducing wendy's double melt in the middle of two hot and juicy fresh ground beef patties is a slice of pepper jack cheddar sauce bacon and jalapenos and now with every double milk receive one dollar on a reloadable gift card oh that's okay i like the no one alive you're the only one who can save us what was once your life is now your legend aragon this film is not yet rated december 15th only in theaters so we're back 706 left in our ball game at oregon state continues to lead now the lead has been cut to five with the guys heading out for some night fishing a little bit rough out there with the wings the way they're deploying tonight here's the kick kicks it away and this one is going to be five yards deep and will not be returned by lawso and let's go down to the sideline and doc punch has got more on the whack and well let's take a look at the western athletic conference poll commitment you see the new mexico bowl there with new mexico and san jose state the sheraton hawaii ball on christmas eve hawaii in arizona state the mpc computers bowl nevada the wolf pack against the hurricanes of miami and the bcs bowl you know boise state probably going to the tostina's fiesta bowl and possibly going to face oklahoma who won today the big 12 championship over nebraska so four teams making it fun to white for postseason play all right jerry our situation for this crowd you can hear them down on the sideline they are standing and making a lot of noise running play nothing now what the thing to keep an eye on is watch matt moore and i i have a feeling he's going to be watching that play clock like an absolute hawk they still have not whistled it in bald's been spotted there it is whistled in so it's only at 22 seconds they're going to take their sweet time and they should and oregon state you don't want to turn over rod but the one thing they've done all year very well is run screens so you can get to hawaii's very aggressive like right now you might want to take advantage of that six up only snapped it was six seconds pressure from behind he's hit lost the football and oregon state has recovered you could see by the reaction of a llama francis who made the hit he was reacting saying well we got the hit but we didn't get the football but now it is third down i just don't think you want to go drop back pass all the momentum has changed the crowd is into it boy they're fortunate yeah they are really really fortunate to still have the football i just don't think you want to stand in there and let alama francis turn up his motor we already know he's got a great motor third down they got to take it out to the 30-yard line see what the beavers come up with blitz coming off the corner draw play and bernard is going to be tackled well short at the 22-yard line suarez made the tackle well three and out's not the way to go [Applause] and that second down play it should have been some kind of either draw or a screen to take advantage of the amped up hawaii defense and dropping back to pass really hurt them for a great average tonight 53 yards as long as 57 but uh on the last attempted punt he dropped the snap he's got to get away a really good one here i'd come after him ron he dropped that snap he's a true freshman i'd come after him really took his time and he booms it very good kick into the win at the 25 spins best gets away look out 40 he's at midfield and one man to beat and the kicker made the tackle well devon bass has wanted to return punts since he got to campus two years ago and june jones finally allowed him a little worried about him catching the ball with his head up and people coming down and hit but they promised they would let him do it for the last three ball games he did it last week against purdue tonight against oregon state will do in the bowl game looks like a pretty good experiment 53 yards in the kick and 35 on the return from the 40-yard line of oregon state quick looking pass that middle screen and up and running at the 25 is sampled and sample is down all the way to the 21-yard line and sample is cramping driving that hamstring like it's cracked it doesn't look like the way that leg is straight doesn't look like a pull but samples the quick guy boy it's hard to believe that he came here and had bad hands rod because that ball was thrown behind him and he's running towards the quarterback very difficult catch to make then orso with a great job of hustle downfield once he saw the play going in that direction got over to knock him down and make the tackle [Applause] clock runs three and a half minutes to play looking deep pressure was on gets by one now dumps it off and he got it off to my and mauia will take it down to the 19-yard line who does he think he is troy smith he'll meet troy in a couple of weeks at the davey o'brien award ceremony down in florida dorian smith give him credit for some really nice pressure on cole brennan on the play so it's second down and now oregon state wants a time out they want to make sure that there is no confusion and listen to this crowd [Applause] if you missed the top of the telecast tonight you can see all those tea leaves up in the stands we had one here in the booth we had another that flew away it's probably in maui by now 30 000 of those were were given away and that [Music] there we go some of the young fans in attendance tonight holding on to the tea leaves they declare tonight's walking a green out of oregon state but i'll tell you oregon state has not been cleaned out so far in this one although their back is against the wall but they've led throughout the contest but the fumbled snap led to the score and then the huge return and this is what june jones has been preparing colt brennan for he's put a lot of pressure on his quarterback eight weeks ago he went public and said he's the best quarterback in the country and he had a plan when he did that he believes it but he did it on purpose because he knew these games were coming last week against purdue tonight against oregon state on espn and in the bowl game he was preparing this young man to not be afraid of these big lights he's now over 400 yards 401 to be exact 37 of 48. it's his 7th 400-yard game of the season under pressure gonna be sacked that is a huge play by dorian smith and how many times have we called his name tonight dorian a junior out of van nuys california and the one thing that i had written by his name on my sheet the coaches said he is beginning to learn how to play well and brennan that was just bad blocking up front the left side of the offensive line for hawaii i don't think they knew that colt brennan was going to be sprinting towards their direction because they just totally let dorian smith go that's the sixth time that he has been sacked tonight third down and gonna go all the way to the 13-yard line looking got a man over the middle and that was good coverage by oregon state jason rivers is the man that he wanted but brandon hughes had the angle he had he had cut in front of the receiver and the crowd wanted some type of pass interference but user just stepped for step now fourth down 212 to go down five you have no choice but to go for it shows you how big that two-point conversion was just a moment ago and i think it's it's got to be a guy like devon bess devon bess is so good in space you may not have time ron to have someone run around beyond the sticks with the distance this long so get it to best quickly and see if you can't make somebody miss so let's see here's the situation fourth down that'll take it to the 13-yard line drills the ball that is under throw it bounces to the receiver most on brennan life and they turn it over on downs jason rivers is the intended receiver and he can't believe it because colt just normally does not miss people that badly yeah he short-armed it absolutely short-armed it rivers working one-on-one they had three receivers to the right he knew he had one-on-one with hughes rivers on the comeback and boy he just short-armed that the whole way and knew it right when it left his hand so oregon state has two minutes to run off the clock and they will come up with a huge win here in honolulu and we mentioned off the top of the telecast this is a big recruiting area for them and coach riley said this would be a gigantic win and help them in recruiting straight ahead goes bernard and hawaii with one timeout they're going to take it right now and ron they're right on that number is that perry it looks like jeremy perry may be down at the bottom of the pile i'll pack 10 left guard for oregon state but they're right on that number oregon state is time wise where they may not even have to get a first down now with hawaii out of timeouts so perry still down on the field and looks as though that uh he is okay you see some of the hawaiian players actually standing around closely taking a look at him because they know that he is a local and a lot of these kids that knew each other before the ball game went to kahuka high school which won the state championship last night in the same stadium yep sure did beat an undefeated saint louis [Applause] that's good sportsmanship right there you can see leonard to peters number 42 coming up and giving him a pat on the back [Applause] 11 hawaiians on the travel roster you had mentioned three coaches from oregon state are going to stay behind after this trip always trying to get hawaiian players up to the in the northwest i went to the university of washington and we every year we had three four five players from the islands come up to play for the huskies adam spear comes into the ball game number 51 sophomore out of west hills california replacing perry at the left guard well cole brennan is going to replay that last row 100 times ron until that bowl game against arizona state because well the scene was set he had his opportunity absolutely [Applause] pitches it back to bernard hit behind the line of scrimmage goes down hard at the 24. that's purcell who leads the attack and now it's going to be third down and the clock is running at 123 now 122. well they got the 25 second clock set pretty quick so hawaii may yet get a chance because i will be absolutely shocked if matt moore throws this ball down the field again i think you can try a screen i don't know if you want to throw this down the field an interception kills you inside of one minute and the running plays straight ahead with bernard they're still fighting him to the ground and it'll be fourth down and six [Applause] well and of course oregon state's going to punt so hawaii without timeouts trying to get the 25-second clock started just did so you're going to be at about nine seconds and i'd i'd go ahead and hey yeah or just or maybe get a timeout right with one second left if you didn't want it either way so loomis about to kick the ball away to hawaii then they ran it all the way down to nine seconds timeout oregon state second charge time out of the half show an opportunity to uh think about it for just a second the difficult thing if you're oregon state you want loomis to boom this football but you also got to remember that bess came within a brent he was the man who made the tackle the last time he kicked to him do you do you kick it out of bounds or i think angle kick it ron you're absolutely right absolutely i would not want number seven he knows every time he's touched the ball tonight it always looks like he's got a chance to make three or four people miss and take it to distance so i would absolutely the wide side of the field is to the left of the kicker i tell him get it to the 40 or 30 yard line and just kick it out of bounds do not let this young man have the ball in his hands [Music] i would much rather have colt brennan trying to heave hoe one into the end zone with a couple of seconds left than devon bess with the ball in his hands no colt down in a squatting position over across the way [Music] i know he's not hurt the thing that probably is injured most his pride and the fact that he feels as though that maybe he let his team down here's a look at that last play that he had an opportunity to pick up the first down and he just threw it well short of the receiver so nine seconds showing on the clock loomis waits for the snap no it's not loomis no that's in the ball game they're going to run it out of the back of the end zone he'll step out for the safety with two seconds left and then they'll punt it away excellent play i'm not quite sure why the hawaii fans are booing that's an excellent strategic play by mike riley you know if your freshman if your freshman punter's in there there's no way in the world you would allow him to turn and run but they put strawder back there and he takes off and takes the slow safety what an excellent strategic move by mike riley and his staff what mike might be saying is you know there's two more seconds he could run off the clock because it doesn't matter if you're standing there on the sideline you can stand and wait until somebody comes to hit you and then step out well and of course the clock starts when the ball is kicked this year so uh but it cannot the game cannot end on a kicking team penalty so if they were to kick it out of bounds the game wouldn't end but i still might risk that ron i just think it's i think you're safer with a long throw to the end zone than a guy like devon bess running around he's just been too scary tonight if i'm oregon state looks like cerna they're going to put the ball on the t and cern cerna's going to kick it off and let's check in with doc punch quickly doc yeah they're talking to certain about what they want him to do down here and they talked about squibbing it or putting it upright putting it sideways and that's what they're going to put it in his hands uh how about the guy who won the the grozo award a year ago has a chance to run these last couple of seconds out you know jerry what he's done uh and i can understand why they'd want him to squib this thing because the ball that he's been kicking off into the win both in the first half and the second half was really a knuckler and then very hard to field he's going to put it up right yeah i think it's going to be almost like a a long onside kick though ron yeah of course wisconsin earlier this year went offsides on purpose [Music] and now it looks like another timeout has been called by oregon state and even if oregon state were to do that again the game cannot end on a kicking team penalty so hawaii would at least get one play but i think that they're just going to have cerner kick at 15 or 20 yards on the ground and uh what better day to have a cal stanford play against oregon state hawaii when callan stanford played earlier today yeah sunday night joined reese davis mark may and lou holtz for a complete breakdown of each and every cottage football bowl game the 2006 bowl selection special on espn at 10 eastern is also available in high definition on espn hd [Music] with perry on the sideline and they've got that knee encased in ice you can see him with the with crutches there promising young offensive lineman sophomores first team all pac-10 let's hope it's not too serious yeah what he thought would be a happy homecoming is not quite as happy right now well there wasn't one team i played on in my entire life that this play for the return team for hawaii was not called cal stanford at the end of every special teams practice we would always run the cal stanford drill so hawaii's got to just try to throw this thing backwards a bunch of times and try to make something happen here comes cerno moving forward at the 20. and he tries to put it in a vacated area caught at the 28-yard line and here we go knock down and this ball game is over as dickerson was the last man to get the pitch and he got tackled there was nobody to give the ball back to with another backward pass and the string is over for the hawaii warriors as oregon state makes it seven out of their last eight games they come up with a victory cole brennan a good night not a great night he had an opportunity to direct his team to victory couldn't do it on the other hand matt moore did a sensational job and got his team to win let's go down to the sideline dr jerry punch jerry with oregon state head coach mike riley and coach what was the key to this win here tonight for your team i don't know there were a lot of keys i thought that we did some good good job at times in the red zone to keep them from scoring touchdowns you know i thought that was big and then we responded offensively with some big plays when we needed them to keep some momentum going but it was it was just quite a football game you held the highest scoring team in the nation to nine points in the second half i mean what do you say about savvy and these guys dorian spent all the effort they put in well that's what they did they just hung in there and played like crazy and this is quite an offense and there was a lot to contend with and the guys just kept playing hard and and made some big plays in the game what does this win mean to your program nine wins on the year i know but you heavily recruit in this area we do it it's fun it's really fun you know june can't keep them all over here so we we always like to come here and recruit but you know it's fun to bring our kids that are on the team home and this is a great team to play against i got a lot of respect for june in the program i think it's great for our team to have this game right now and i thought that both teams played really hard tonight hey coach congratulations go celebrate appreciate that run dr putch thanks so very much and again we echo our uh congratulations to coach riley and his staff really big win final score oregon state 35 and hawaii 32. next in espn it's the state farm nfl matchup this has been a presentation of espn the worldwide leader in sports along with ed cunningham and jerry punch i'm ron franklin thanks for watching everybody we say aloha from honolulu now here is the state farm nfl matchup [Music] my it is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hi everybody welcome to state farm nfl matchup sal palantonio merrell hodge you know ron jaworski it is week 13 guys and we have an unprecedented situation in the national football league three playoff teams three count em have serious issues at the quarterback position we start with the denver broncos they have benched jake plummer you go to new york eli manning is in a funk and in chicago well rex grossman we don't know what rex grossman is jaws he's up he's down it's boomer bust with this guy let's look i know haji's not a stat guy you're usually useless but let's look at his quarterback rating in the last six weeks 10.2 137.4 36.8 105.7 84.1 23.7 way down it's like a yo-yo it's like six flags it's like a roller coaster ride that's a good line how'd you like that will you guys just relax okay well make when you look at rex grossman on tape the one thing that i see is good decision making he's processing the information quickly and going to the right receiver however here he gets a little loose he gets a little bit loose with the football that means the coaching staff must help him they throw a lot of low percentage balls down the field pose corners squaring i think they need to get more short passes high percentage passes and a little more maximum protection to allow him to get comfortable relax rex is going to be fine well i do believe that ron turner the offensive coordinator does those things now i've said this for since we've been on the show a coach has all the power but no control once you go inside the white lines what you've been taught how to manage is up to you as the player that's why when i look at rex grossman has enormous confidence there's no question about that the difference for him or the challenge for him can he manage that confidence if he can manage it he could be great if he doesn't he's going to be a player that doesn't play very long but you know studying the tape too you know everybody points the finger at rex grossman they got some young wide receivers and at times especially in the last matchup against minnesota vikings those young wide receivers dumped on that young quarterback and made that young quarterback looked bad and i'm going to show you one play of the last match-up that illustrates this because if you see this interception like what is rex grossman thinking first thing we've got to identify safety single safety dwight smith bernard berry and the wide receiver that is going to be the focus this is the route that he must run does a great job of first of all attacking the corner and the safety both getting them vertically as he threatens the corner but he should now bring his route flat across the field that is what rex grossman is anticipating to happen because that was what bernard was supposed to do from the end zone angle you will see if this league what do we say josh you gotta throw with anticipation that's correct he knows bernard now must make it across once the safety and the cordon corner go threaten to that side that is where he must take the route but for whatever reason bernard berrien does not make that adjustment based on the coverage he failed he decided he was going to keep it vertically but guess what when rex grossman knows you should make that flat across the field the ball is already gone the fan looks at rex grossman goes what are you thinking what are you doing but this is a wide receiver mistake not a quarterback mistake so that's what i'm saying rex grossman has to manage his confidence no question but they got some young wide receivers aside from moose and muhammad this is a young group they have to mature and get better as well our next matchup saints and niners and i want to stay with the quarterback theme jaws drew brees let's face it shock this league he was injured he was available the dolphins pass on him sean payton you know basically takes a risk with the guy and he has just been gold for the saints he has a good field general very act accurate and explosive in that offense from the start oh you are correct oh wise one and this offense in new orleans has been remarkable when you consider the time that they have been together it's not been a team that's been working together for years you know and merrill talked about the chicago bears and their young players not being on the same page not working in harmony well the antithesis of that are the new orleans saints they are making adjustments on the move and they are the right adjustments and when you want to talk about explosive plays you talk about the new orleans saints they have 49 passplays of 20 yards or more that is the best in the nfl here's one of them [Applause] this was last week against the falcons i want to start with past protection the saints blocked with eight to ensure a clean pocket for drew brees maximum protection has always been a signature of sean payton's offensive approach when we switch to an isolation look from the sideline you see devry henderson in the slot and joe horn split outside with the eight-man protection it's a two receiver route focus on horn his called route was a bow out as joe began his break to the sideline he saw that corner deangelo hall had taken that away watch how horn adjusted to the coverage and converted his route on the move he broke to the inside away from hull and into a void in the secondary now let's look at this play from the all 22 perspective breeze had to read the coverage with the same set of eyes as horn and simultaneously anticipate horn's move to the inside the ball is out of breeze's hand before horn is out of his break the defense initially won but brees and horn countered and produced yet another explosive pass play for new orleans up next the matchup of the week the cowboys and the giants what's wrong with eli jaws has the answer that's right sal okay looking good noelle with your good driving record and your son's good grades i think we can save you a few hundred dollars that's great state farms got football fever never get used to that you'll get it too that was excellent they three-man rush as time rolls right sets fires it right and it's intercepted by pacman jones at the 49-yard line bob papa with a call on the new york giants radio network eli manning has thrown 15 interceptions most in the nfc welcome back to state farm nfl matchup i'm sal palantonio the matchup of the week dallas cowboys at the new york giants and this league is just topsy-turvy a month ago the cowboys were a model of dysfunction now the giants have come undone and jaws we could sit here all morning long and talk about the problems for the new york giants but it begins with eli manning and you have studied this guy every snap every throw what's wrong with it there's no question sal the quarterback when you win gets too much credit when you lose a quarterback it's too much blame but meryl and i both take great pride in our preparation for the show by studying the tape and we do our evaluations based on winning a world championship and being an all-pro type player not being a starter in this league not going eight and eight what it takes to be the very best and to be the very best you have to take care of the little things everyone does the big things the champions take care of the little things right now eli manning and the new york giants are not taking care of the little things [Music] on this fourth and three it appeared to the untrained eye that giants right tackle kareem mckenzie was beaten leading to pressure on eli manning that resulted in the incomplete pass a study of the coaching tape showed me that eli was the problem on this critical play the ball was set just inside the right hash mark manning's drop should take him straight back where he should set and deliver the football but watch closely as eli dropped back he drifted to his right just outside the hash mark this took him into mackenzie and defensive end kyle vandenbosch mackenzie did not get beat the pressure on eli was self-inflicted and prevented the completion to an open tim carter spin it forward the giants led 21-0 with just over 13 minutes to go it was second and four the giants came out in an empty set this really surprised me especially with a struggling quarterback eli saw no safety in the middle of the field correctly red blitz and called tiki barber into the backfield to help with protection you'll see that manning perceived pressure and rushed his throw it certainly didn't help that plexigo burris quit on his route this play was a microcosm of the giant's collapse last week some curious play calling but perhaps more importantly correctable breakdowns in mechanics and reading progression by eli manning over a month ago you would not be able to use the word stability with the dallas cowboys because they were a train wreck as you mentioned sal but one thing that their offense i've as i studied their offense that they do they had great flexibility you know the indianapolis colts came into town what they do they ran the rock thanksgiving tampa bay rolls in they threw the rock against the giants though based on the problems they have especially in their secondary i would throw it if i was the cowboys they got great balance they can do both but i think the passing game will be highlighted roughly romo tony roma how much does bill parcells love tony romo this week in the new york times he compared him to lawrence taylor said they had the same strategy how about that how can you compare it a quarter back to outside language our next match up the titans and the colts and not even you your boy jeff fisher thought that vince young would be able to win ball games this early in his career the national football league but the guy his numbers his numbers are not great but he's a winner on the field he knows how to win the winner because he's four and seven are you considered for four and four 500 as a let it go winner little bit listen the titans have done a great job of managing and hiding a quarterback not highlighting him the foundation for the tennessee titans and i'm sure you don't even watch the tape hiding is running the course hiding the quarterback he was really talking the foundation though he's running the football if you want to talk about what the titans do okay and the colts we've talked about this many times what do they do they don't defend the run very well they play pass we're gonna go the coaches clear because i got jaws all fired up you all fired up and i'm gonna show you what i mean about a defense that plays pass first because you have split backs you have travis hendry you have two backs in the backfield you got to anticipate glendale white you got to anticipate they're going to run the football i want you to watch right here is that that linebacker got anything to do with running the football trap here is there anything right here that looks like pass absolutely not this tells you a great example guys getting up field using traps a double team splits on the outside and watch lindell white love how he plays behind the pad finishes the run they gash the colts in the first matchup they did not throw the football like jaws wants to say because they hide their quarterback they do not highlight him they run the rocks so indianapolis i think they need to change their mindset let's play pass and then we go the quarterback have better chats why is this so perfect it's not but you're not going to take one or two passes and say now he's the new coming he's one they won four games i i think you evaluated a quarterback after a couple seasons and i you know okay well then i'll sit there he is here but i'm not but seeing a growth pattern that is ascending not descending so give the guy some props but the guy that doesn't need props is peyton manning and i'll tell you when when i look at the game the last time tennessee played indy tennessee blitzed one time that entire game marvin harrison caught a touchdown pass on that one blitz so spinning this forward to this game marvin harrison last week only caught one pass i think peyton comes on the huddle early in this game looking for 88 88 88 and gets him the ball girly well everybody's going to want to see the next 10 at the 15 bills down 21-17 with 15 seconds left shotgun snap lossman takes it fires into the end zone it is caught in the end zone touchdown buffalo boy i tell you that's when jp just grew up lostman takes the snap looks to throw steps up in the pocket directing traffic throws it downfield and it is caught by roscoe paris yes at the 23-yard line and now they're in field goal range with a chance to win it the snap the kick is up it is plenty of lag it is good and the buffalo bills have upset the jacksonville jaguars and this team is in business folks our next matchup the chargers at the bills the chargers have won five straight the bills have won two straight and jaws j.p lassman has played the bills right back into the playoff picture who knew about that of course i knew sal you know greco cell and i did some coaching in the off season we got jp lifted up but i love the theme of the show you know it's a quarterback show that is good stuff and i'll tell you what we spent the last segment talking about vince young and you know everyone's going crazy how vince young is playing let me tell you they ought to start going crazy the way jp lostman is playing because he's actually playing very good football and here's the maturity and growth of a quarterback last year in his eight starts cro uh lost was about 50 percent complete this year up to 64 percent now here's the key statistic careful with the football only 2.8 percent of his past are intercepted that is less than tom brady and less than chad penguin careful with the football that's important for playing the quarterback position our next matchup the seahawks at the broncos now jake plummer in denver 39 and 15 as a starter but mike shanahan believes that jay cutler the rookie gives the broncos the best opportunity to win right now but this is an unprecedented situation never has a rookie come in this late in the season to a playoff team to be the starting quarterback but you have seen him on tape so what makes him a special case well i think what makes him a special case is his willingness and his anticipation to throw the ball into tight windows anticipating wide receivers coming open at a young age i mean we felt both jaws and i in the draft there's only one guy worthy of a first round pick and it was jay cutler but watching him in the preseason and his ability to understand what's going on and thought to those tight windows when wide receivers will show up is what really stood out for me and i'm sure in practice it has done the same so we had to go back to the preseason but we've got some plays that will show you what he does better than jake plummer the anticipation and the awareness to know where everything is there's jake cutler he's always under the center right josh usually tight end's gonna run a crossing route now there's the route combination but we're gonna have to go to the end zone after we see the play fake to really appreciate how he gets the ball to the tight end who's coming across because he's going to have pressure but going when you're a young guy we usually get pressure guys want to run right away or they make bad decisions well watch this watch how smooth he is little tom brady like looks downfield understands where his tight end is understands the pressure feels that and then he moves as he looks down him he never looks to just run the football perfect throw on the run two he's tied in go to the detroit game end zone angle really shows about anticipation windows the tied in gonna come to a seam rap down the middle but watch the linebacker watch the coverage watch where he's open he's not open now but jay cutler's already decided he knows where the ball must go into that small window between two defenders where only his tight end can make the catch the anticipation the willingness to throw it into tight windows is what really makes him special made him special in college he didn't have all the weapons they'd had at usc and texas he played with less lesser talent but this guy is the best anticipating in those tight ones and gives them more of a vertical threat than plumber did nice job you're doing passing plays now you are learning coming around i'll tell you what i actually like this movie mike shanahan has always been a great designer a great designer of offense and with jake plummer who did a nice job by the way with the broncos no one should be dissing jake plummer i think he's played very very well you only had he only had the horizontal passing game with jake very few balls down the field the arm strength of cutler now gives you the vertical game the big plays will come you know i'm a humble guy and josh i would like to just say after watching thursday night football that you were right about carson palmer and i was wrong he is definitely a stunt that's impressive he put the latte down he's watching the game next we will examine why jaws was all wrong about oh yeah [Music] [Applause] [Music] this saturday night on the west coast very popular show sunday morning at espn at 8 30 before you head out to church get the gospel of the coaches tape from and jaws right john that's right sal our next match-up is the dolphins and the jaguars to suddenly never say die dolphins joey harrington has won four straight here are the notches on joey harrington's belt chicago kansas city minnesota and his old team detroit now you have popped into coach's tape what is working for joey harrington at dolphins offense he's playing very well that's obvious al i once had a offensive coordinator tell me the quarterback position is played above the neck play smart joey harrington's doing that that the quarterback positions played below the waist little movement mobility in the pocket to throw the football but the other thing that joey herring is now showing me is a very strong and a very accurate throwing arm [Music] on this third and seven against kansas city three weeks ago you see three receivers to one side of the formation the chiefs played tampa two with linebacker kowika mitchell running down the middle seam the dolphins anticipated the coverage primarily used in third and long situations the route combination was designed to attack mitchell derrick hagans from the inside ran a curl route wes welker ran down the hole mitchell's reaction would tell joy harrington who to throw the ball to mitchell jumped higgins at the first down marker joey went over the top and delivered a strike to welker for 30 yards great read accurate throw this isolation replay really showed how the route combination by higgins and welker put mitchell in a bind mitchell stayed underneath allowing welker to attack the void between the safeties that's a big time nfl throw when i played for the pittsburgh steelers i used to stand by our defensive coordinator at the time dom capers who was the defensive coordinator for the miami dolphins and i learned more about defense during the course of practice than any time in my career you know i'm studying the tape and watching detroit thanksgiving they're playing a lot of 4-3 they're predominantly a 3-4 team but then you know i start thinking of dom he's always adjusting to the opponent detroit likes to throw the football a lot that's why they play their 4-3 jacksonville though they like to run the football i would expect him to use a lot more of his 3-4 i think that's better to stop the run don caper is one of those great defensive coordinators to turn this defense around jason taylor having an amazing year could be defensive mvp but i expect a lot of 3-4 in this one to defend jackson
