Opening decades-old canned foods

these are some cans of food most of them are from the 1980s I'm gonna be opening them up to see what they look like inside I think they're gonna look exactly how they're supposed to I think they'll be fine since oxygen hasn't got to them they've been sealed up but if they're good I'm not gonna be eating them I'm gonna put them into this bin the first one that I'm gonna be opening is this can this is from Stop and Shop it's condensed cream of mushroom soup this expired October of 1985 can you read that okay October of 1985 this expired yeah and this I don't think we'll be okay I think it got punctured because well let's see it doesn't smell bad doesn't smell bad at all doesn't smell bad okay the next cane I'm gonna open his coconut cream pie filling and when was this made it was fifty nine cents when it was purchased looking for the date on this okay I'm gonna open it smells fine okay here's a jar of peanut butter this one I know has the date on it it says November 24 1988 best one purchased by 1988 this obviously isn't new but it being that old it smells perfectly good perfectly good I'm not gonna eat this what I'm gonna do it this is I'm going to scoop it out with a butter knife put it into the bin and I'm actually gonna keep this jar because the newer jars don't have it actually carved into the glass so I'm gonna keep the jar from that one it's kind of nice okay the next thing is from the year of 2000 it's still very old [Applause] looks fine smells fine and the ones in the stores these days the packaging hasn't changed at all they still have the same picture on them the next one is a Campbell's family size chicken soup this is from July 1999 is the expiration on that [Music] [Music] it looks normal yeah it smells normal it looks like something went wrong with it though you see how it's looking looks like it has granules of something all over it doesn't look right what kind of soup was this chicken noodle yes something happened to the chicken okay next one is clam chowder this I could not find a year on I'm just going to assume it's old [Applause] [Music] smells fine I don't know if it's supposed to be that stuck together or not but it smells okay I think it's because it's been settling so long more clam chowder this jar looks like that doesn't look that good I couldn't find a date on that one either [Music] that smells fine too last one is white potatoes this by the packaging I don't think is as old Oh mm it's still pretty old the year of 2000 [Music] okay look at it it looks like they're kind of falling apart because they've been in the water so long okay this shows canned food does last quite a while surprise the peanut butter is still good especially after somebody opened it years ago the spinach looked perfect everything here smelled good something went wrong with the soup which wasn't that old this peanut butter the pie filling and this can we're by far the oldest ones and nothing went wrong with them the other ones the cans were very rusty it's possible oxygen got in there but this there was nothing wrong with the can that's probably why it lasted so long and it's nice back in the day you say they actually stamped it in there instead of just using ink this was super easy to find this shows canned food lasts quite a while so if you have any kin of food sitting around that's only a year or two old there's nothing wrong with it it's just a best buy date thanks for watching
