all right guys i hope you're doing well tonight and i just wanted to take this opportunity to let you guys know if you're interested in openbsd at all on the desktop you want to run a good looking open bsd setup i have pushed all of my configuration stuff up to my dot file repository as well as i do have a pycom build that has all these nice animations and everything on my gitlab as well so that link will be down in the description below if you want it if you're new around here my name's tyler i go by zany online and in today's video i'm just going to be showing off my system and doing some stuff i mean i probably won't do anything productive but i just want to tour around the system and show you what i've got going on here so um first things first the thing that kind of pops up just immediately is the fact that well i'm using my webcam and all of that and able to record and all that good stuff just fine here on openbsd if you want to be able to do that as well you got your own youtube channel or you would just you're interested in recording for whatever reason i have in my dot files i'll go ahead and load up the browser i don't see any reason why i shouldn't if i go ahead and load up gitlab which this should take me to my dot files repository perfect if we go in here dot local in bin you'll see i've got stream open bsd and record open bsd and these scripts right here will load up ffm play and all cat and they will well the record will record a separate video file and a separate audio file that way the audio file you can take it into audacity do whatever audio editing you need to do and then pull it into kaden live and you'll get you know your little webcam pop up here something to note because i i'm gonna i'm making this video for people who are wanting to use open bsd on a desktop but haven't yet if you do want to take advantage of the script just something to keep in mind is if we search multimedia open bsd and go to the multimedia page you will probably read this but there's a good chance that you might miss this important detail but if you run these two commands here and or just add the kernel video record to your sys ctl and reboot you'll be able to capture the webcam per se but only as root because root still owns the video device so what you need to do is run this command down here to let your user own the and just replace the dollar sign user as far as i know i don't think you actually have to replace dollar sign user because i believe whoever you're logged in will be that user or will be that environment variable but just make sure you just replace it with the name of your user and um dev video zero and then you'll be able to capture your video using ff play and also if you installed openbsd ran these commands and installed chrome or firefox something like that and you were using discord um in the browser and you were weren't able to capture a webcam even though it's plugged in and you know detected and should be working that's probably why your user just doesn't own it so after you own it you might have to log back in but i don't think you'll have to do that just close out of the application reopen it and you should be able to use your webcam so that's a good little piece of advice there to hopefully help you guys out but this is a little script that you can find that should should help just in case you want to record but i have switched up i'm now using the uh cat pacino theme like cat poochin theme i don't know this was recommended to me by party over on discord thank you man this is a fantastic freaking theme it's awesome but i've got it i've got chrome here is what i mean chromium is what i'm using and i have you know the cat puchen theme installed i'm using dark reader and i also if you go down here they also have a theme for dark reader i i i took my contacts out so i can't really see my screen all that well so i have no idea it's somewhere in here hidden away but there's a dark reader theme for it so you get you know the same fluid theme everywhere you go in the browser which is just it's just really nice if i click on patreon and load up here into my account you'll see you'll we'll get a custom you know setup it's all super sick i i really really like it it's just absolutely fantastic also as well i guess we'll just go into some of the changes about my config here and why i think you probably want to check out my i've been looking at a lot of people who share and do videos on openbsd and who use it as a desktop system and in my personal opinion i have the best looking setup out of everybody now that is the most arrogant and um confident thing i've probably said ever on this channel and that's not saying everyone's set up looks like but personally i think i have a much more polished looking system my for one this is a custom wallpaper you can also find this over on the dot files as well it's under pictures wallpapers and then you'll see it openbsd capuchin and this wallpaper is also curved so if you have a nice you know monitor like i do pretty much it looks like the monitor is curved too because the pixels that on the very corners where there's no wallpaper it's just black it blends in with i have a monitor that has like a thin bezel and it practically blends in with the and it definitely blend it just blends in with the sides of the bezels and so my whole screen looks like it's it's rounded to match i have pycon with rounded corners it looks great like i have super awesome animations going on um i have ksh configured to look just chef's kiss beautiful um like if i see the end of config we get my working directory and everything it's just it's absolutely gorgeous if we run neofetch here my processor i'm using the 5700g and then it's not telling you the actual graphics card like like technical specs but it's a 6600 xt and it's working flawlessly fine um i guess here in a second since i am showing you the setup i could just launch up a game which which i'll do here in a second but i've i've themed everything and it's all working really well also you'll notice that i'm i have a 1440p 165 hertz monitor it's working beautifully with this setup it's fantastic so by no means is open bsd not capable of being a really good desktop system like it is a hundred percent possible it's just probably not for you like if we're being completely honest for most people open bsd is probably not for you openbsd focuses on security super heavily and they're very good at saying no we don't want things or we won't do that that's that's something open bsd specializes in and that pisses off a lot of people if you want developers as a whole to just do what they're asked to do linux and most likely freebsd is probably going to be the only bsd you want to stray from linux 2. um i'm not talking bad about linux just because i've moved on to open bsd doesn't mean i i'm no longer a fan of linux or anything it's it's just i prefer open bsd over linux just do not bsd in general mind you i did say open bsd it's just personal preference okay i'm not saying anything's bad i'm just stating the differences between the two so yeah that's pretty much it so if i open up the file browser you'll see you know file browser i'm using fff instead of ranger mainly because the only reason i used ranger was because it was super simple to get image previews working with uberzog but uberzog is specifically developed uh which if you don't know what uberzog is it's a tool for like displaying images in ranger here in the terminal and um i just had issues with it relentlessly here on open bsd because uber's august definitely made for linux like not for other platforms it's made for linux and um w3m which is the other image preview like method that's pretty popular is not working in st and i pretty much don't have any other options so if i can't get image previews working i might as well go back to fff because as far as i know out of the box you're going to find even though ksh is the default shell on openbsd i believe by default bash comes with openbsd but before i installed ffmpeg or ffmpeg fff here which is that's short for the fast file manager my my train of thought almost completely derailed there like really really bad but i think i saved it uh since bash was already on the system i was like all right cool i'll just go ahead and install fff because fff in my opinion is just it's slightly better than in and in not by a long shot but it's just in my personal opinion i like fff um more because it's just got more simpler key bindings um if you want to delete some delete things just press d and then uh you'll select it and um if you want to d again to unselect uh or whichever option you just press it again to unselect y will copy um m will move and then all you like if you wanted to actually do the action like let's say i wanted to i'm not going to do this but let's say i wanted to move templates into public i could p and it would paste it in here let's move that back out though um p so there we go so you could do that with b like actually do the action i i really like using this and then if you wanted to like rename something just r over it and you'll rename it uh it's just it's such a joy to use for uh fff is so fast i i love it but i've got the nice animations the the like i mean i just i don't i don't know what there's not to like about the desktop it's well nice uh if we do alex appearance you'll see got you know the nice um cat pooching theme going on and again i know i'm butchering the theme name but uh also got the cursor custom cursor going on looks real clean real nice i like the rice the rice just looks good works fantastic i don't i don't see any problem with with anything if you want to go to my get my dot files you'll you'll find i have updated everything to um just read nicer be be nicer um i mean you'll be able to see my ksh rc is now in here so if you want to get the nice ps1 i have if you want to check out any of my aliases aliases that i have because like one of the most annoying things that you want to change uh for people who are new to open bsd you'll probably come over here like this is the biggest thing that i see people do you switch over to openvsd they're just like so confused by this they do this ls blk it'd be like lsb okay not found the no like look lsplk is not on here and you don't need it if you want to check if you want to check uh your hardware like disk names it's this it's literally says ctl space hardware dot disk names boom okay so now i know the i have a cd rom drive and a sd drive or sd0 drive cool um if i wanted to check information on a drive df and i have my df alias to df-8 which you definitely want to alias to because come on you want it inhuman readable the h is for the human readable flag which essentially means let's take the data and make it into something that you can read and make sense of which is like i mean a no no brainerd but yeah it'll list out you know all of the different partitions i have how they're mounted on the system yep man i don't know man it's it's a really really really good system i'm very happy with how it's set up how it looks it's it's just a clean system that works good it's reliable and finally it can even play games really well we'll load up zero a d and we'll go in here and do a new campaign demo campaign select campaign do the alpine valleys because i don't care we'll try this and i'm only going to do a quick recording of this just so you guys can see that open bsd can definitely game no problem even though i'm not going to play this game at all i'm actually treating it like i am uh no no no no no no no i need to kill deer cool dude we are doing a good for this yeah okay i like how i'm actually taking this seriously i have no idea why because i'm crazy yeah so there's no one on this server so it's not like we're gaming with anybody but oh my god that was some lag right there okay maybe ultra settings is probably not the best for gaming at 1440p and recording on openbsd at the same time but that being said it's still running mostly fine so i mean really can't be that big of a deal you know i mean i'm not upset about it i think the performance is great so yeah um i'm just i'm absurdly surprised with how well uh this system is working out and i just i really like open bsd i really do and uh hopefully you guys will enjoy the content that comes out over the next little while and uh yeah i think that's about it so uh thank you everybody for watching if you liked the video hit the like button consider subscribing because i'll be posting videos like this for the foreseeable future and uh make sure after you've clicked the button that you hit the bell notification button button because you know like youtube will not tell you if you don't press it thanks youtube and then the final thing is i have links down in the description for my discord which is a fantastic place i recommend you guys come over there we have incredible people who are super kind super nice and knowledgeable on things that i'm i know nothing about and but could definitely help when you're in a pinch so highly recommend you come over there also if you want to support me in what i do here uh please consider clicking the patreon link down below and becoming a patron because it does genuinely help and the people who do support me over there are freaking awesome people so let me take a second to thank them um seneca arts center joshua lee papa smurf russell willis and matt from the linux cast thank you guys i need to check the list for the next video that i make to make sure that there's not anyone new but i'm just going to be humble and assume that there's nobody but who knows i might be pretty surprised thank you guys for watching and i hope to see you in the next one bye-bye
