OPD officer dies from injuries sustained in line of duty

Wirtz KTVU, Fox two news. >> The Oakland Police Department is mourning the loss of an officer who was critically injured on duty almost six years ago, the department says. Officer Jordan Wingate died today surrounded by his family, including his father, a retired Oakland police captain. His law enforcement career began as an OPD cadet in 2013. He joined the force in 2017 and was named rookie of the year in 2018 by the Oakland Police Officers Association. Police say Wingate, just 22 at the time, was responding to a suspicious person near the Port of Oakland back in 2018 when he crashed into a car and then careened into a parked big rig. Officer Wingate is the 55th Oakland police officer to die in the line
