it is a beautiful day almost too warm and a little windy because i got to complain about something right but we're going to get busy next week preparing for harvest which really means there's very limited time left for us to go harass randy and the boys over there while they throw in drain tile so that's what onyx and i are going to go do do you want to come with idg do you want to come with how about you anna what about you you just didn't like the other dog getting paid [Music] they're good dogs but we're not going to bring them with [Music] is it true does randy the master pipelayer actually work during the days it's hot out onyx yeah hot and dry like everywhere this year big surprise it's really him randy the master by player you can jump down there i don't know if you'll make it out or not but you can go ahead and jump in there well it was fun having you around enjoy your time it's not as deep as it looks maybe you're taller than you thought you were the soil profile here is pretty deep it's black soil all the way down where onyx is standing so you can see here in the piles he's digging that's solid black dirt what do you think it's a hole huh it's a hole in the ground there he's gotten into some clay look at how good he is got right down to that mainline pipe [Applause] you look so majestic no i'm right here in the sweet field golf course yeah i came to get you are we not going golfing zach johnson comes over going golfing i hate golfing i think i don't know i haven't swung a golf club and well we were in san antonio i swung a golf club yeah i hate golfing it's pretty warm how hot is it inside there ah it's a real cool 68 degrees that's rough yeah it is i've decided to go for a ride with randy here yes so there he got to the end of his run brush the pipe so that it doesn't allow soil in it's not an open-ended pipe and then pulled to make sure the pipe was out of the boot lifted the boots up out of the ground now he'll run back and we'll connect the next run [Music] did your pipe run short it actually is [Applause] you just go to the other side of the ditch yeah no no the other side of the edge will need gotcha it's definitely a little cooler in here i can tell by the way that it is you'll record that you don't want your guys to know i frequently drive back to the hole the door opens so that gets hot in here randy you probably wonder like how i can come out here all day and just not worry about my home and making sure everything's good back there i was curious you were well it's because of my simply safe security system that i ordered myself online it came right to my door and i installed it myself in like i don't know an hour less even a millennial even a millennial can install the simply safe home security system nice can i get one for my plow i'll bet you could it's been known to be foreign objects placed on my door handles there are times when i'm not here i'm not gonna ask check out the old moline i can't see what the number is on it but that is a sweet ride right there man those are cool crackers so you guys know that we have and have been using the simply safe security system at our house if you're interested in it for yourself you can follow this link right below here which is also down in the description they've got a 24 7 home security monitoring system if anything happens they will call your local police ambulance whatever it might be they make smoke detectors carbon monoxide detectors glass breakage sensors motion detectors water sensors doorbells with cameras on them so i can see right on my phone they make everything and anything that you could want to keep an eye on your home while you're gone look at that i can see that isla just finished brushing her hair on the front porch i can see this video of an oversized idiot in a millennial farmer shirt entering the house [Music] these are some of our new shirts you can find them on our merch store in our merch store linked below with the busy lives that we've got going on where i'm gone a fair amount we've got a lot of people in and out of the yard right there on the farm where we do business we got the kids at home we were interested in making sure we had a security system for those reasons because you never know who's coming by if you guys are interested in getting the system for yourself you can take 20 off and the first month is free when you sign up for their interactive service all you got to do is use this link right here simply save on home is that four inch pipe yeah and what's the main uh six it's only a six yeah i suppose it's not it's just not taking much yeah it's just this little egg area here 30 acres not even that not even so for the people at home thinking that you're crazy for putting tile in the ground when it's a drought right now and you're gonna make it worse how do we explain that to them just tell them they're crazy well the simplest way would be uh so when you flower your when you when you water your flower pots when you flower your water pots when you water your flower pots if you don't have holes in the bottom of it it's really easy to over water your flower pots yeah water's gotta yep we're in some of the heaviest tightest clays known to man right here that uh our water isn't going anywhere so it's inside so regardless we're in a drought or not at some point we have too much water and the and the pipe isn't going to take out the water that we want it just drains the excess kind of like the holes in the bottom of the flower pot right yeah yeah if you have holes in the bottom of your flower pot that doesn't mean your flowers are going to dry out it's just going to let the excess water right which actually makes it more efficient for the plants to use the nutrients and easier to keep the nutrients in the soil because it's not getting flushed out with that extra water because the soil profile can only hold a certain amount of each nutrient and of water right so even on a drought year like this when we started this spring there's still times when we're wet uh we still have the frost coming out yeah so uh everything that has tile under it is still our better crop this year even on a drought it's got oxygen and it can work it's not right it's not just sitting there being flooded out it's a healthier soil yeah with less compaction because that compaction will kill you even more in a drought here too right see we're like scientists yeah exactly so that's what i drew up in probably january and that's all that's all based on like did you use lidar for that yeah okay so all based on elevation it's actually an elevation that the uh i believe the dnr the ones that flew it basically they shot lasers down they flew i don't remember what the grid size it's not very wide they flew a grid uh i'm pretty sure they have the whole united states done now and it's like a typography map right yep so you just said you surveyed it coming back this way so i got lined up on the line and then i hit survey and i surveyed it back so it it captured a point every 10 feet so the machine knows the grade that we're about to run here already because you so then so i back up and i set it in the hole and then i hit on and that's the ground so actually this red dot up here these red dots are the ground profile that's the actual shots that it took as i was backing up okay so the green is set whatever my minimum set i think two and a half i would say right now i have an optical depth set at 3.1 so that's what it's going to follow is it's going to keep me at 3.1 feet deep so like right at that spot um exactly 3.1 here i'm 3.145 because there's a little bit of a hill there basically the machine mapped the ground and it's smart enough to know exactly where it needs to run the pipe to keep the grade right correct it's got it it's got a minimum a minimum and a maximum depth minimum maximum depth and uh an optimal depth so where you want it to be and then it has a minimum grade so it'll never flatten out completely flat you ever see terminator watch terminator movies i have you ever worried that the tile plows will become self-aware and take over the world they probably will at some point yeah at some point the dang good thing you get along well with this one that is some dark soil right there and it even looks like there is still a little bit of moisture down in there we're about i don't know 50 miles west southwest of where we farm they have had a little bit more rain here so they are expecting some better crops than what we've got but definitely still in the drought that's for sure taco what's with the volvo hat are those real trucks [Applause] i'm supposed to give him crap about his volvo hat they're the best in the world apparently these guys need me to drive this gator across this ditch for them it's hard to find good help so i decided i would step in do what i can do you know well you want to be a pipe player when you grow up what are you going to be there farmer tire of the bike layers all right get in there connect that tee [Music] huh you need a jigsaw a machine gun saw you should make onyx do that there you go dude he's already in there well hold that tee up on the pipe over top of the six inch there yep there you go bravo [Applause] oh give her a little zap there we go [Music] step on her there you go yeah it's on okay now we don't want it to go sit about right in there right so will you want to cut some of this yep so then we'll just take her off randy was able to get around over to the other side of the ditch this field is kind of cut with a drainage ditch that they're dumping this uh this pipe into over there so now he's over on the other side so they got to move all the equipment obviously over the other side because he can't get across this anywhere five feet yet turn uh turn to your left yep hold it there oh can you wiggle this trailer at all by hand not very nicely oh you hauling me yeah all right hey look at that there's a restroom right over here see the men's room men's room so this is what green corn looks like i remember that [Applause] dj will you please come on our off the husk podcast sometime yes when winter i've been told there's some stories oh there's always a story i'd like to hear a few of them yeah so i can believe it we'll provide the beer yeah i'll be out so they're gonna put an outlet on this that actually outlets into the ditch [Music] hey radio to choco make sure he's got my radio in there [Music] you know it's amazing he won't put away his own laundry but he jumps in the mud hole right away and goes cutting had to come in here to cool off i was wondering it's miserable up there well yeah not that it's air conditioned in here or anything when do you guys take lemonade breaks oh we don't get it we don't get those you don't get those are you driving again onyx [Music] i love molines there's one on the new millennial farmer shirt [Music] they moved into a different part of the field and now they're trying to tap into an old tile that they laid they figure nine to 12 years ago but they're running into some brittle spots where it's actually kind of collapsing on them so they're having issues with that so they're going to kind of look here and inspect and see if they got to run a new main and leave this one alone or what they're going to do it shouldn't be that brittle after just 10-12 years is randy checking the oil over there chuck it at him onyx so what did you guys screw up here randy what's going on well you dug it up up there uh and it pipes in perfect condition but it's brittle but it's brittle i can take shovel and hit it and punch the shovel through so as long as you don't touch it and stays underground the water flows through it just fine it probably would have been fine forever but it's not the way it's supposed to be so we're just going to relate we're just going to reload yeah you'll leave this one in there we'll leave this one in it and i'll plow alongside of it yeah we'll just abandon it best guess is it probably sat outside for a few years maybe uh sat outside in the sun sun makes a brittle yep and they will i mean it's plastic right you know sun eventually will but that's almost what it seems like this big stone egg service they're just always making the customers satisfied uh so now so this boot here we run uh six inch five inch and four inch down and then we change to a different size boot for ten inch and eight inch meaning the boot being what the pipe actually runs through yeah and the reason that is because the bottom of that boot has a groover you see that groove on the bottom yep that shapes it for the pipe to fit in so well we wouldn't be able to fit eight inch in that pipe in that boot but if we were to run six inch or five inch down the eight inch boot it's too wide of a curve at the bottom and the pipe over time would egg shape and flutter so what you're saying is you got to make sure the pipe matches the boot correct you can't you can't get too big of a pipe in a you know what is that [Music] you gonna fit back there onyx oh he's got plenty of room this your going to town truck definitely is yes well they put on a new boot and then shut everything off they're calling it a day so we're rolling out of the field here but i think we got to head back to town the big city of clinton minnesota randy's got something to show us that got warm so this is the elevator in clinton minnesota actually uh they saved the bins but the buildings the wood buildings burned down probably three weeks ago now so that structure was 80 feet tall this was a fair amount it was eight what burned down was 80 feet tall 80 feet so that uh i think that catwalker that went straight across so that's how tall that big square structure was do they know what started the fire i don't i don't know that they do you don't know how did they save the bins as big as that fire was i mean i saw pictures of that how did they stop that five million gallons of water a lot of water they actually pumped from the lake the other side of town and they pumped directly from lake on this side of town so they had hoses directly in the lakes pumping pumping up here so they had that one i don't know for sure but at one time i think they probably had like 10 bumpers running relay pumping it all up to here and i suppose the main idea was to keep the heat from spreading to the to the steel on each side yeah do those have grain in them the this end one does i don't know about the rest but this one does if that'd gone they'd have never gotten it out would they no you'd have to empty the bin it would you just let it burn basically well it doesn't really burn either just like turns to caramel you you pretty much have to take it out or it'll burn for months right yeah so no they just tons and tons of water kept the exposures cool and basically they have to control fire burned it down that's crazy did they have to evacuate like these houses evacuated three block area because the heat was so bad they had a few roofs starting on fire around in town they had they had roofs starting on fire around yeah just from the heat just from the heat uh embers too sure i mean it was a long ways you know things are blowing around it was hot that day every day has been all summer yeah was this this was wood structure that had grain in it yeah so all of this is just underneath the uh uh so basically there's a wood floor over the top of the whole thing okay so it wasn't offices one little tiny office over in that corner the rest was actually grain storage grain storage yep i think it held if i i think someone told me it holds 200 000 bushels if it was full right well not anymore so you were serious when you said five million gallons of water yeah that's best guesstimate those are the numbers i heard uh that they're guesstimating but it was somewhere around 180 not exact numbers but 180 firemen through the course of the day and a half days and how many departments 19 departments 19 different ones yep 18 engines switching in and out coming and going well most of them were here there was probably 130 here on the grounds the first day and then the next day so we came down monday yeah with a pumper and then it was just us in one other department just kind of maintaining but but during the heat of it it was probably somewhere around 120 firemen here and probably about that time maybe 16 departments 17 that's crazy and this is the bar in clinton minnesota thanks for watching
