this here is a super Graphics a unique and pretty rare console that was only released in Japan it's so rare in fact that only 75,000 of these were ever made and it had only five games made for it just to put that into context the Super Nintendo which was a competitor of the super Graphics at the time sold nearly 50 million units worldwide and has a library of over 1,700 games I happen to pick this super Graphics up during my trip to Japan and while it's in pretty decent shape overall I'm going to give this a complete and I mean extremely thorough overhaul like you've never seen before and maybe the folks over at DK oldies can take a few notes anyway connecting this super Graphics to the TV we can see that it's in working order although the AV Port does seem to have a faulty connection which is something we'll definitely need to address so not only will I be replacing aging component components and giving this a very deep clean I'll also be improving it with a fantastic video mod by the time I'm done with it it'll be better than when it was new so let's get [Music] started all right as usual guys we're going to start off by completely tearing down this super Graphics to get to the [Music] motherboard now while this console is very straightforward to open I still always recommend practicing good organization by categorizing all the screws and taking note of where they come from this iFix it magnetic pad with dry erase marker really helps with this and I use it all the time [Music] and right off the bat I noticed some crack solder joints on this R of shielding which we'll definitely need to address later on for this [Music] restoration [Music] nah [Music] now taking a look at these capacitors they seem to be in excellent condition but since they're pushing 34 years of age we're going to go ahead and replace them anyway with some highquality fresh ones to ensure many more years of service so here we have the FED Hudson 628a CPU which is the brains of both the super graphics and every other PC engine console out there and here we have the Dual Hudson 627a video processors which is what makes the super Graphics unique all other PC engine consoles only have one of these chips but the super Graphics has two now upon further examination of the board we can see that it's caked in all this old residual flux which is not only unsightly but also very sticky once we get the board completely prepped I'll be putting this through my ultrasonic cleaner to get this thing completely spotless anyway let's start to prep the [Music] board [Music] now before we remove the capacitors I need to take note of all their values and their location on the board to ensure I replace them with the correct new capacitors I'll just jot down their information on a piece of paper for reference later on here I take note of the polarity value location and component number and before we we proceed I'll remove the large heat sink for the voltage [Music] regulator now let's go ahead and remove all the [Music] capacitors [Music] n [Music] and as you can see all the Caps are actually in pretty good shape but again they're over 30 years old so we'll replace them anyway now we'll remove this AV D connector which if you remember was giving us some issues this will actually be completely replaced with an all new connector for a video mod that we'll be doing to the console later [Music] on and again here you can see all the flux residue so let's go ahead and drop it into the Ultrasonic Cleaner I set mine to a 3-minute cycle with the Basin temperature set to 50° cius this should really get the thing nice and clean I use a mixture of distilled water and the proper amount of this bransen Electronics cleaner concentrate mixed in I've had nothing but great results using this so [Music] far [Music] once the 3 Minute Timer is done I flip the board over so that the part that wasn't submerged gets time in the cleaner as well now before we check out the results and see see just how clean the motherboard is let's pause to talk about today's sponsor PCB way if you have an idea for a new mod or want to assemble an open source project PCB way provides you with the tools to make them a reality from 3D printing services in an array of materials all the way to other services like CNC Machining injection molding and of course PCB and flex ribbon fabrication so when it comes to taking your retro mods to the next level PCB way is the place to make that happen check out the link in the description for PCB way to get $5 off your first order and again a huge thank you to PCB way for sponsoring this video all right back to the ultrasonic cleaner and when we pull the motherboard out we can see that this thing is looking pretty clean but we're not done just [Music] yet what I do next is Dow the board in isopropyl alcohol in order to help displace all the water left behind from the Ultrasonic Cleaner since IPA does evaporate much [Music] quicker I then pat dry the board with a limp free tissue to remove excess liquid and then blow dry it to remove all moisture from the crevices and hard to reach spots and my goodness the results are amazing this board looks Factory fresh as you can see all the residual flux has been completely removed now before we give the shell a thorough cleaning of its own we need to First remove the power switch [Music] mechanism [Music] and then let's give everything a nice [Music] bath now these serial number labels on the bottom of the shell are made of a paperlike material so I won't be submerging these in water but we'll instead carefully clean around it with soap water and a toothbrush and then with a clean microfiber cloth I wipe away all the excess soapy [Music] water [Music] next I set everything aside to completely dry off while we continue to work on the motherboard first order of business is to solder in the brand new capacitors I'm just organizing them here before I install them which will make the installation itself a lot [Music] easier [Music] n [Music] [Music] and here's the board fully recapped with brand spanking new highquality capacitors [Music] now the console 5 capacitor kit also comes with the jail bar fix which requires us to replace two small ceramic caps on the back of the board c168 and c169 so let's do that [Music] next [Music] m [Music] all right jail bar fix complete next up is prepping the motherboard for zachor Turbo nanza mod kit which will improve video output quality so let's start doing that the turbo nanza mod is definitely one of the best mods you can do to any PC engine or Turbo Graphics console I cover this mod extensively in a dedicated video which you can find linked down below if you want to learn more about [Music] it now here you can see that I'm resoldering the resistors that I removed back onto a single pad the reason I'm doing this is basically for keeping the resistor stored on the motherboard in case I want to convert the console back to stock sometime in the future this is completely optional and you don't need to do [Music] this you can see that these pads were left empty and that's because we're going to need to solder to them in just a moment and here I removed resistor r 147 and did the same thing with storing the capacitor on a single pad now it's time to install the turbo nanza [Music] kit [Music] ah [Music] m [Music] n [Music] a [Music] n [Music] a [Music] now in order to install the new avd connector I need to remove some of the solder mask so I can solder the mounting PCB to the motherboard I marked the areas that I need to solder to with a marker which indicates the area of the solder mask that I need to remove [Music] I begin removing the solder mask with a fiberglass pen exposing the copper [Music] below [Music] n [Music] and here you can see we have two perfectly exposed pads to solder [Music] to [Music] n [Music] n [Music] m [Music] m and here we have the turbo nanza kit fully installed which will give us beautiful highquality component video capability for the super Graphics now before putting things together I like to treat all the switches on the console with deoxit d100l this not only lubricates the switch but also removes oxidation and provides a layer of protection increasing the longevity of the switch's life which is a moving component that exhibits wear and tear with use [Music] n all right the motherboard has been completely refurbished top to bottom and modded with the turbo Danza kit and is looking absolutely amazing now it's time to put it all back [Music] together [Music] m [Music] m [Music] and the last thing I'd like to do to really cap off the installation is apply some Aerospace 303 plastic protectant to the outer shell as this not only conditions the plas stick but it also provides a layer of UV protection and gives off a really nice matte Sheen [Music] finish and there you have it folks a completely refurbished super Graphics console that's ready for decades more of enjoyment I'm really happy with how this turned out the super Graphics is a relatively unknown console with only five games made for it but with it now all refurbished an outputting beautiful component video through Zack Source turbo nanza kit I'm really going to enjoy the heck out of those five games well I hope you enjoyed this video and if you did I'd really appreciate you hitting that like button also check out this video recommendation on screen for some mod videos that I'm sure you'll enjoy as always thank you all so much for tuning in today and I'll catch you again next Thursday
