welcome back to my series on Deftones album white pony this video is about Digital Bath Digital Bath oh this is a beautiful [Music] God [Music] like your eyes [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] I feel like [Music] you'll Chase [Music] you will see [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] charge you [Music] tonight foreign [Music] stop [Music] that's one of those songs that's so good it makes me feel aggressive like I want to smash something you know it's just man I mean like I just feel like the best of everything that these five yeah five people have to offer came to fruition in that song okay so first of all the drums right okay [Music] how good does this kid sound that's snares and the kick and everything [Music] I mean how good like sorry what a great Groove [Music] cuckoo foreign but it was but Punk is so upbeat right this is or Up Tempo I should say this is these are all pretty like down tempo maybe that's part of what it is is Abe is combining really uh detailed up-tempo Groove elements with a slow halftime Groove but there's so much syncopation in this that that kick is so off I love it that one and he leave so much space for it so you can really hear it thump on the offbeat it's okay I love the atmosphere here so I guess this is possibly Frank Delgado right or maybe it's a guitar effect I'm not sure who's doing it but I've always loved this whistling howling sound it's very cold sounding [Music] okay [Music] [Music] this is a beautiful song it's like really beautiful so um [Music] my e sounds a little higher than theirs but anyway so I think it is flat six oh fuck of course [Music] yeah so it's like uh it's really low but oh I think they're just voicing it with the thirds of the chord not the not the with the fifth I like that I could be wrong it just kind of sounds like so already it's beautiful because and also listen to that rhythm so you've got this like main chord and you have like a brief departure down you come back up and I always liked that sort of unevenness and that almost like I'm stepping like out of line for a moment and coming back over and over again it's just like a nice instead of like it being like even like oh to that sounds very pretty but it's like very predictable and this is like okay we'll talk about the melody in a second because yeah there's that note Okay so [Music] you know yeah all right so he is starting and ending on tense notes so that kind of confirms that theory so can I play this with one hand yeah but there we go so [Music] you move so that's tense to hear that dissonance if he didn't do a dissonant note he would just go like you move foreign like that would be more pop style but you move what a great noticing on move because it feels like it has to move if that's what's the fourth okay so it's inbetweenie you move another dissonant note there's that ninth or the second degree I want to that's and you know here's the cool thing it is a lot easier to sing inside of chords and to not sing not lean on dissonant notes like that it's really a testament to his vocal ability and his ear even you know that he can so comfortably rest on such a tense note like that and not get swayed because he's only a half step away from resolution and he just stays there you that's hard foreign so that's probably why that's so beautiful we got the flat six we got those parallel like thirds action and the third of the chord is always very colorful and in this case it sounds very dark and then chinos leaning on these these notes that just prolong tension and and he's not giving us the answer it just feels great and then [Music] Okay so back to our flat six chord we are we are okay I love this so much [Music] attention all right who recognizes this interval [Music] look at that tension bruh is not singing a single resolved note I love that about him I love those melodies [Music] this is a tritone this is a ninth and this is the seventh I really think that's a big part of his vocal style and his Melody writing is finding his place in these in between places it's so cool and as a disclaimer I I don't know how much music theory Chino knows but I would be shocked to find out that he was thinking about it this way I think it's just an intuition for him probably with it as it is with most people writing music just a feeling but I think you know you you can feel it when something's like off you know what I mean in a good way and I think you can feel that so yeah [Music] okay and then we resolve to this chord tonight [Music] [Music] oh and I love that none it's got like an edge to it almost a little bluesy um tonight it's kind of In conflict with his voice tonight that's like a D major chord I guess for those of you interested in the chords it's like E minor then C major over and over again then [Music] is also on that c major chord then it goes back up to E minor back to sleep and there's this like release to the D chord but it's not our home chord so we got to go back and we do it's a night there it is okay so oh so these chords are the same as in the verse okay but everything's been elevated to the next level right taking up a notch in the chorus just guitar tone drums chinos now singing in his chest voice he's belting he sounds amazing the guitar is way more distorted it's just yeah um and the note that he holds out is so beautiful and it's another really tense note he goes I feel like I'm more foreign [Music] degree again then he goes uh um even the uh that's also tense so he is just like if a jazz musician were analyzing this music they would probably be thinking a lot about chord types and recognizing that Chino's voice is often slotting into the extensions of chords so that would be like the ninths and the elevenths um and also into the sevenths which are not considered extensions but they are 10 it's a tense a tense Edition I guess you could say to a Triad or whatever anyway so he's just he's like all about those in between cracks it's like it's like almost where he feels seems to feel the most comfortable [Music] hear that tension tonight or is it tonight oh even better tonight okay tonight all right I love this at first they just cut kind of cut back to the verse instead of continuing to go in this kind of loop almost that they do later this is just like a taste right it feels like a more tonight can I leave you on the unresolved feeling foreign [Music] Travis add nine [Music] also a little detail I love how it kind of sounds like there's a little uh anticipation of the main chord like the good dumb that little right yeah it's like a little pickup they don't always do it [Music] I love this counter melody in the guitar so we're on this chord c major guitar goes up now an octave higher or even more goes that's kind of bluesy [Music] I guess his vocals I mean it just sounds like jazz [Music] how much space is in this melody it's like a whole measure or something in between his his phrases I really like that that breathing space [Music] [Music] what a setup tonight foreign I just I just love hearing that feel like a more on that tense note it makes it so much more emotional it makes it feel like he's feel like more it's like there's something sad and also triumphant about it I don't know tonight [Music] I feel like more this descending line is such a setup for I feel like more that's what I meant then he goes up even higher and it's so beautiful I I'm pretty sure I've cried listening to the song before I think it's really powerful um foreign so before he was going um I feel like I'm more and I was going so high I'm not gonna belt it like him so he goes all the way up here [Music] um he's finally singing like a resolved note it's all high bloody [Music] one how pretty oh [Music] and this oh I love the effects of my guitar here [Music] recommendations [Music] okay and then the guitar coming up I love how like it sounds like a screen because you're all like chilled out now it's just like [Music] two variations of his Melody feel like I feel a dark more fear feel like more and tonight uh and tonight and tonight and tonight I feel you know feel like a more feel like more but it's all around that same chord foreign so it's just an incredible song the way it Loops at the end and bills is really really powerful I think because it just feels like it'll never end and then he ends it on tonight it's the flat six chord ending on the flat six chord and singing in the ninth against it is so beautiful so I've always wondered that I was like why do I always feel supremely at peace right there [Music] right is that how I ended oh and that Phil Abe's been holding back on all the triplets nothing's been tripletized and he suddenly he goes what a great way to end the song [Music] I will always approve a vending on the flat six always that's it for this video stay tuned for the next track on the album farewell
