how many hours do you spend immersing in your target language every day I managed to pass a mock version of the highest level of the Japanese language proficiency test as well as make a whole video in Japanese and work at a Japanese company all within two years how many hours do I immerse in every day 12. 12 hours might seem a little insane probably overboard and honestly you'd be right that is until we consider that 80 of Americans speak only English that's 225 million one hundred thirty seven thousand five hundred twenty four people that spend 24 hours a day immersing in English when you put things in the perspective like this I think you realize that it's actually quite normal it's normal come on this video will cover three points one my daily routine two how I keep it up and three how doing this will probably make you stop learning languages altogether from the moment I wake up and until I go to bed anything that I can realistically do in Japanese I will this is called the monolingual transition the only things I can't use Japanese for are one talking with non-japanese speaking people like my family or friends or when I'm in a restaurant or taking a taxi or two some work related software or just some media content that doesn't exist in Japanese these are the factors that I call shogunai literally things that you can't do anything about we all have to go to work or go to school or just interact with non-japanese speaking people in general unless you are in Japan there's not much we can do about this however factors that are not shogunai are controllable factors for instance my phone and computer UI are set to Japanese I have a separate YouTube channel where a hundred percent of the videos I consume are in Japanese this is the trick the YouTube algorithm and giving me only Japanese content when I learn new words I use a Japanese dictionary with the Japanese definitions when I Google something I search in Japanese even when I'm working although my software can't be said to Japanese I have Japanese content playing on the side so I'm constantly immersing no matter what I'm doing and so at first you may think that in these 12 hours I must be doing a whole lot of different things but basically this is all I'm doing to summarize I wake up and immediately do my Anki I then start working and have some Japanese stuff playing in the background once I fulfilled my daily quota I go have some fun so I can either actually spend time binging some YouTube videos watching anime or playing a game Heck if I'm really bored I might even go read a book if needed I'll spend additional time mining through all the unknown words in an anime and sending off Anki cards for them which you can find out how to do right here from there it's rinse sleep and repeat honestly it's a super simple lifestyle so naturally the next question is how do you not get tired why won't you die and the answer to that I think is quite simple narrow machine son I just like all of it and that's probably the most important factor I simply like watching YouTube videos whether they're in English or Japanese so I could spend a full day just watching YouTube videos if I wanted to conversely I don't like reading so it'd be really hard to sit me down and have me read for 12 hours a day so due to the nature of my job I can utilize a lot of my time for language learning which may not be possible for people doing other types of jobs or going to school again these are shogunai factors that we can't really do anything about that's why I really like this video called Japanese for busy people like he basically talks about how anybody can optimize the time they spend immersing even I also Implement some of the tips he shares into my daily life another thing I alluded to in the beginning of this video is language exhaustion which doesn't exist again eighty percent of Americans don't get tired of using English for 24 hours a day it's not even a thought that crosses their mind what we get tired of is not the language itself but not understanding the language I like to analogize it to someone swimming in the ocean if you don't understand nothing and it's like you're in the ocean desperately trying to stay afloat you'll grasp at anything you understand in order to try floating But ultimately you'll just exhaust yourself on the other hand if you understand everything perfectly then it's just like you're taking a dip this means it's not possible for someone to go from not knowing a language immediately to doing 12 hours of immersion a day unless you're like an actual monk or something everybody starts out not understanding Jack so how do we get to the point where you can actually understand everything well it's definitely not by taking a leap of faith and dunking head first into the water it suddenly becomes very obvious if we use the ocean analogy again I can't teach you how to swim by making you walk the plank you will drown and die in language learning that's equivalent to getting so exhausted and bored that you end up completely giving up this is the worst possible outcome for anybody learning anything so don't do that instead let's take it step by step I'm gonna assume that you are already using Anki to kick start your basic vocab and sentence structure you should be at the point where you have some core words and you're familiar with the basic sentence structure and you have the core grammar down you can double check this in my video explaining the most basic rules of Japanese sentences in this video up here if you have your Basics up to that level then let's move on don't get stuck with your phone in a foreign language not being sure how to revert it back so you can't report the murder that just happened right in front of you do learn the basic functions of your phone so you can switch back when you get stuck for example in Japanese settings languages English is Eagle these are the words that you should put into your Anki that will directly help your immersion yes you are also free to switch back whenever you need to language learning should not get in the way of your daily life don't spend time watching 50 videos in a topic that you don't care about coming out being unable to tell me what even one of those videos were about do watch what you think will be fun and entertaining example I had no idea how to play mahjong but my favorite YouTubers are playing it a lot so I learned how to play mahjong in Japanese now I can fully enjoy watching Mahjong videos I would not search up how to play poker because nobody I watch plays poker so I literally don't care just because for example a poker video might be more dense in Japanese that doesn't matter because that bores me by the way this is one of my main points in my video talking about why immersion by itself is not enough to learn a language check it out up here don't use a Japanese dictionary look up the definition find unknown words in the definition then look up the definitions of those words find more unknown words and keep on repeating the cycle that's what we call dictionary diving don't do that do dive one layer deep for example if we take this word see the definition is if we for example didn't know the word what you should do is create an Anki card for doll with a Japanese definition that you can understand a hundred percent of if such a definition does not exist just write the word animal in English don't go any deeper than this ideally the original words definition has a max unknown word count of one any more than that could be less efficient however I have used definitions with up to four unknown words before now in the case where a Japanese definition has too many unknown words what you can consider doing is translating the definition using something like deep L and using the translated Japanese definition instead of the English definition the choice of whether to use the English definition Japanese definition or the translated Japanese definition is up to which one you understand the most naturally the more you immerse in the language the more you'll acquire and the more you acquire the more you understand the more you understand the more you can immerse it's a very efficient self-fulfilling cycle as you can see the monolingual transition is not a snap of the finger voila now you must use Japanese 24 7 thing it's a process that can take a long time remember the monolingual transition should not feel like a trap there are times where I too want to watch English videos I'm not gonna let the fact that I'm supposed to do everything in Japanese stop me from enjoying a Chris broad video nice stick and what if I encounter some actually stupid word like am I Really Gonna Write this for the definition instead of yeah um yeah okay you know what that wasn't a good example well the point is some words just have whack definitions that I don't understand it's okay to use English the monolingual transition is to slowly shift your default option to your target language but your native language can still be used as a backup now that I've given you the method to Kickstart your monolingual transition watch this video now to discover my recommendations for what to immerse it cheers
