2023 has been full of a lot of great bikes and I'm excited to share with you a compilation a review of my favorites also I started a new channel uh it's called Old shovel Homestead I'll be doing some furniture in the future gardening other things around the Home Sharing similar videos but not bikes go ahead and check it out I'll put a link in the description I'd appreciate if you liked and subscribed there also let's get into to the best of [Music] 2023 recently it's been difficult to find a sirly corner bar for sale so I went to [Music] AliExpress and got some fake carbon Corner bars that was shipped in the most unusual way I actually spoke with the post office and although they thought they were probably handlebars they thought it was pretty amusing so with the bars I needed to find a bike and I found this one the specialized Crossroads from the '90s for 20 bucks at my local Deseret Industries thrift store perfect for a gravel conversion from its dad bike [Music] Origins yeah I think the bars will look [Music] good [Music] and with that phase one of this specialized Crossroads build is done I say that because I'm not done I didn't plan on being done this initial build I wanted to test out the concept set up the bike give it a ride and get a feel of how these Corner Bars were fake carbon Corner bars work I quite like how they feel I like them with the orig grips um I wanted to see how that would feel different with drop bars with ory grips on the ends instead of uh bar tape I think I do need some bar tape I also really want to paint this bike where I'm at right now in the middle of the winter and most of my painting I do out side it's a little too cold so in the comments below let me know what you would do what you think I should do for a paint job for this bike I'm also wondering about components wondering about welding some disc tabs on on the fork and on the frame what do you guys think let me know in the comments and before we wrap this up again thank you to Ritual for sponsoring this video and making content like this possible be sure to check out the link in the description below and use the cold code Old shovel 20 to get your 20% off your first month of [Music] ritual also don't forget to like And subscribe and as always look for opportunities to give those old things new life and I'll see you on the next video [Music] ciao some bikes see a lot of use such as this one that was set aside by the folks at the Salt Lake bicycle Collective for me so what is this bike's story well it was donated along with another Surly troll by a couple who used their Surly trolls to travel around the world they camouflage Ed it with some gold paint some reflective red tape and took it everywhere now although this bike looks well used well worn in the disassembly I noticed it was still well cared for even though in both bikes the seat posts were very seized and it took quite a bit of work to get them out um thankfully the collective did that before they gave it to me to deal with but the goal with this bike is to to give it back some new life to make a few tweaks and changes and to try removing this gold paint so sit back relax enjoy the disassembly and the build be sure to stick around for a few special interesting parts that maybe we'll talk about a little bit at the end and [Music] enjoy [Music] a [Music] is w [Music] much better so what are the highlights on this build first off the greps handlebar tape that's reusable washable and has no adhesive I also really like the K Creek V levers that work with long pole disc brakes super super awesome I loved also that I was able to get that gold paint off by just using nail polish remover or 100% acetone and then the 3x10 setup using the drop bar shifters and the altegra 10-speed derailer and last of all I love that this is for the Salt Lake bicycle Collective a nonprofit bike shop here in the Utah area that provides awesome bikes for folks like us that are used we can buy and reuse but they also provide a great service for the community and I'm more than happy to partner with them so if you're ever in the area be sure to check them out also in wrapping this up thanks again to Squarespace be sure to check them out if you're building a website and when you're ready for that to save that 10% and if you haven't already don't forget to like And subscribe look for opportunities to give those old things new life and I'll see you on the next video [Music] ciao every bike has a story this bike started its life in the same country I started mine in Canada although this one started likely in BC likely built in '94 at least that's when it was painted and it was likely built by Paul Brody which is super awesome Paul Brody was a bike builder who started building bikes in the80s and is well known for building some awesome race capable bikes which this bike is it's a super light steel frame that is just perfect for my favorite kind of XC trail riding my goal with this bike is to give it new life I found it as a donation at the Salt Lake bicycle Collective convinced the guys there to let me buy it I really really wanted it and my hopes is to build it up as a a suet XC racing bike there's a lot of good things going with this bike one the frame the frame is just awesome it does have a few dings it has one Dent that I'd like to fix but that would involve needing to redo the original paint and so that's something I'll address later right now I just want to build it and run it so sit back relax and enjoy the build of this awesome classic '90s bro flying purple people leader and I'm not sure why it's named the flying purple people eader if you know let me know in the [Music] comments for [Applause] [Music] call me out tiger call me out don't you [Music] love lift me up higher above the clouds won't you love when the scenery is right go right in I want to fall deep within don't leave me hanging just cuz I'm too proud whisper away my outdated doubts somebody do me the courtesy dress me [Music] down I'm not that old and I'm to young to not Stand My [Music] Ground my ways are mine and I don't want to change not even for Love Now take back all them hard words I'm a grow man with confidence and sense in the middle meet me in the middle I'm R figure me [Music] out we'll drink morning [Applause] [Music] it for Tiger call me out with blue green eyes I was super stoked when I finished this build and weighed the bike I don't normally or haven't shared that before but it really surprised me to be under 22 lb although I am using a lot of lightweight vintage components it was pretty awesome to see this build be under 22 lbs it's an awesome build it rode super smooth I love the the lightweight steel frame building it up with some of these old vintage parts tires wheels the old Sid Fork trying to match it all with XT components over different Generations felt like a really good clean build a good good homage to a classic built Brody bike ready for more races maybe also thank you to Squarespace for for making this content possible um look for opportunities to give those old things new life don't forget to like And subscribe and I'll see you on the next video [Music] ciao starting in 1991 and throughout the '90s GT offered three custom high-end XC frame sets one in titanium one in aluminum and one in handbuilt fillet brazed steel called the Cyclone this bike came to me through the Salt Lake bicycle collective in addition to the awesome frame it had some cool retro bits that just made it irresistible like this Judy SL with white brothers Jud internals super [Music] awesome this bike is truly a unicorn bike there were not a lot made most people opted for the titanium or the aluminum frame sets and because of that it's few and far between and because it's such a unique custom bike I really didn't want to make a lot of changes I debated do I want to put a modern drivetrain on it or do I want to keep it similar to that basic retro [Music] feel the choice I made was to keep it more retro but I wanted to make some changes that that updated it a bit the handlebars on it are really really narrow and I wanted to make a few changes to make it more comfortable easier to ride and I hope you all enjoy what I've done with this bike I was actually surprised how nice it rode when I was all [Music] done there's a lot of car and attention that go into building a handbuilt frame like this and I want to do the same with the parts that I restore for this bike it's like a bike ride the uphill portion for me is is the hard part part of the the struggle and the journey and once the parts are all cleaned and prepped and the frame is ready to go I'm ready for that downhill y [Applause] for [Music] [Music] [Music] this is another one of those builds where I don't think I'm done this will be a bike I'll hang on to for for a long time some of the changes that I made I'm quite happy with changing out the stem for a slightly shorter a little higher rise and wider bars really made a a big difference it's a lot more manageable changing it out so that we're running Canal levers just kind of puts it back in the right era but I think I'll be looking for newer better part still for this [Music] bike that said I'm quite happy with what's on it but it would be cool to make it lighter a little more high-end vintage and it's surprised me how well it [Music] rode [Music] so thanks for following along with me on this build and allowing me to share a bit of its story with you if you haven't already don't forget to like And subscribe let me know what you think about this bike in the comments and as always look for opportunities to give those old things new life and I'll see you on the next video [Music] ciao so it's time to paint a bike this Marlon 5 um I think has gone through a few owners um actually I picked it up from a kid on the Nika racing team here locally um for pretty cheap he said it was a size small 275 it came with 26in wheels on it a 29er front fork random bits no discs and really the only thing I want on this is the frame so sit back relax enjoy the breakdown the paint and the rebuild there were a few surprises on this build so stick around to the end and we'll talk a little bit about them [Music] [Music] [Music] d for [Applause] so for some reason the copper paint is not working I've had the can for probably too long so we're just going to spray over the copper and not go with copper as the middle color [Music] [Music] [Applause] and with that this bike is [Music] done so what are the surprises well this is a size medium 29er frame and I was able to fit 2.8 on these 275 in wheels that I built up which is good it's kind of a 275 plus and that'll work really well for my wife this is a bike I planned to build up for her I'm also really happy with the clear coat the the 2K clear it's a lot harder and more durable than than the other clears that I've used also on the front wheel initially I built it up with a radio lacing and it just wasn't strong enough for the braking I saw some movement when I was attaching the discs and decided to order some new Spokes and Lace it up with a three cross in all I'm happy how it turned out so as always look for opportunities to give those old things new life and don't forget to like And subscribe and I'll see you on the next video [Music] ciao I'm blessed to own a lot of cool vintage mountain bikes and this 1992 team Marin is one of those we're going to be restoring this one as somewhat of an homage to all of the awesome team Marin bikes over the years you see this last year I've been coaching Nika and my son and I have both been riding a team Marin 2 from 2023 super super cool bikes super fast perhaps one of my favorite bikes I've ever owned and so this homage restoration is a thanks to Marin for making awesome Pikes over the years and just to feel a little more of those good feels that I feel for my current team Marin 2 so stick around enjoy the build this should be a fun one I did a few fun things if I was living still in 1992 this build will be the way I probably would have wanted it so sit back and enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] a for [Music] ch and with that the build is done I love how this bike turned out the spray do bike paint is is just awesome the match the color match was sweet and the rebuilt Judy XC using the specialty retro products just made it probably better than it was back in '95 and the combo on this teamr in 2 is just awesome so enjoy the ride out as always look for opportunities to give those old things New Life thanks to spray. bike park tools and in this one to Specialty retro products and I'll see you on like I promise I would even though you wouldn't do the same I do you want me to cuz I love you the past month I've been doing a few small projects and it's time to throw them into a complete bike something like this 1996 TR 8500 it's got a really really cool lugged but seamless aluminum frame that's just super cool it's equipped with a full XT kit from 1996 with the awesome V brakes just everything that's super cool and I'm excited to dig into this one ch thing right for okay so I'm pretty dang happy with how this ended up this rock shock Sid XC from 2000 cleaned up really well I love the way the paint ended up I love how well it matches with this Tre 8500 and it rode pretty well also mind you there's a lot of snow on my local Trails right now so um I took it on the local Canal Trail which probably didn't exercise it as much as I could have but it feels really good feels nice and plush great for something from from 2000 really like 23 years old in fact it probably rides now like new and looks new I couldn't be happier for those of you that have been following Along on this Tre 8500 I first did a video restoring a white Industries rear hub which I later built into the wheel set that's on this bike bike I did another video on the clipless pedals then the saddle then the bike and now the the front fork if you haven't seen those videos check them out I may continue to do a few more things on this bike I'm not sure um I'm not what sure what else I would do wider handlebars maybe I don't know in any case I love how it ended up um and as always look for opportunities to give those old things new life if you haven't already don't forget to like subscribe let me know what you think um and I'll see you on the next video ciao all right for those of you that have made
