hey what's going on everybody um just got a new smoker uh it's an old country pecos smoker i got it from academy sports and outdoors is like 400 bucks um i'm pretty sure you can build this bit this pit for 400 um [Music] just going through it i i'm just i'm really satisfied with having cooked anything on it but i mean it seems like a quality uh pit for 400. i don't think you can beat it uh so basically what i'm going to do now is uh i want to do a review on it and just kind of take you through the picture everything that it has and [Music] after that we'll do a seasoning on it our first seasoning and i will show you how to do that so let's get to it all right so here's the fire pit or the firebox you got a grate in the firebox which is awesome um you can throw some burgers on here whatever uh that thing slides out and you come around here and you open this thing up be careful with this that's gonna get really hot and i will burn myself on it for sure uh this is where your coals go and firewood um which is nice because you don't want to put it directly on the firebox or directly on your pit i mean you want to put it on this which is awesome tons of space very cool um fit a ton of firewood in there you can get in there no problem uh close this back up um or let's look at this this does pretty good anywhere i put it it stays which is nice i've seen some that are just really loose and uh that's not too bad uh this though there's a gap if i pull on that i think you can see it even when i don't pull it um if there's gonna be a gap in this pit that's where you want it because you need airflow going to that fire so that it can uh get it get oxygen for the fire so uh you need air flow anyways that's not really the best way to get it but you know like i said if there's gonna be a gap that's a good place to have it it's not really bothering me too much um come over here to this side uh the main cooking chamber so check out where the thermometer is um the thermometer is exactly where you're not gonna have any meat where you're gonna have meat is here here here here all the way across right so that's where you want your thermometer okay so you want your thermometer grate level so you drill a hole here on this side you drill a hole on this side you put two thermometers you know what the hot side is you know what the cool side is this up here um yeah that's where they it's where they put it so and thermometer comes separately gotta buy that separate um the door is it's got some weight to it i like that 11 gauge steel um rest of the pits like 14 gauge here's the main cooking uh grate right here so this pulls out like so look down in there you got a baffle so it's going to protect the meat that's on this side um also what else you have is okay so the smoke's gonna come through there right and it's gonna roll over this grate and go straight through that exhaust the exhaust is at great level which means the exhaust is at meat level which means that the smoke is gonna roll over the meat and through the exhaust very very good place to put that um because in other pits if you have your exhaust up here this is what happens the smoke comes through here and it goes up through here and you just missed all this meat that's here right so the whole point of smoking meat is to get the smoke to roll over it so that you get the smoke flavor if it's up here somewhere else like they do then you're not getting that smoke with this pit you don't have to worry about it because it goes from here rolls over your meat through the exhaust through this massive exhaust that i can fit my entire arm in awesome i love it love it um good place for the firewood big wagon wheels there's a good little shelf here that collapses you can uh you can take it off lay it down if you're gonna you know whatever store it whatever you're doing so that's it um that's the pit and let's season it okay so one thing i failed to mention which i really like and i want to point out is this nice flat surface on top of the firebox uh you can put a pot pot of beans or some barbecue sauce or something like that on there so that's really cool i wanted to mention that and i'll i'm sure i'll be definitely using that okay so the next step is to season your pit and to do that you're going to want to get a bowl of soapy water and you're going to want to wipe down the entire inside of your pit the firebox and everything you're going to do the grates all the walls everything underneath or inside the pit you're going to want to do because it comes with some kind of oil that it's not a food grade oil so you don't want to bake that into your steel you want to be sanitary and and get that off of there and uh the way to do that is just some soapy water wipe everything down grates and everything and then after you do that you're going to want to let everything dry out completely dry and once everything dries out then you can come back with your cooking oil and spray it all on the inside of your pit and then after you spray that cooking oil all over the inside of your pit then you can make your fire in your firebox get it up to 250 to 300 degrees and then you're baking good cooking oil into the steel of your pit rather than this nasty stuff that it comes with um so basically what you're doing is you're doing the same thing that you would do with a cast iron skillet so with the cast iron skillet uh you're basically making it nonstick you're spraying the oil on there and uh baking the oil into the cast iron skillet that's the same thing you're doing with this and so this pit is gonna be non-stick and it's gonna be it's not gonna rust so it's really good place for the firewood ruger agrees alright so the next step in the process is to coat down the entire inside of your pit with cooking oil now that you got the batter oil off we can put the good oil on um just wipe it down real good just make sure you coat it the whole inside the grates and everything real good with cooking oil and then once you do that you can start a fire in your firebox uh get it up to about 250-300 degrees and let that oil cook into your still and that's it and you're ready to go okay now that we got it all greased up we got the cooking oil sprayed all over the inside of the pit we got a fire in the chimney so that'll be done about 20 minutes we'll dump that into the fire pit throw a log or two on and start letting that oil cook into the steel and our pet'll be ready for our first cook [Music] so [Music] so okay so i just took a peek inside and the temperature dropped way down i was a little over 300 um i just wanted to see how it was coming along i've been messing with it all day and all day i've been throwing i've been throwing a log or two on about every 45 minutes a log every 45 minutes for sure um just to try and maintain that temperature but it just dropped down no big deal i was rolling around 350 there for a while just to kind of try and get it really cooked in there real good um so now i'm kind of sticking around more of the 300 mark uh i'm about done i'm gonna this might be the last uh logs i put on but just to kind of show you what it's looking like so far it's really changed colors a lot it's looking uh it's a lot shinier uh it's a lot blacker it's real black um [Music] looks like it's doing what it's supposed to be doing so we'll see what it looks like once this thing gets cooled down and everything but i'm liking the results so far so and then to look into the firebox if you want to take a peek in there that's what we're looking at not too bad got some good logs on there right now to be burning for a while so it's gonna get good and cooked in there i put quite a bit of uh cooking oil in here on these walls probably more than i should have but i think it'll be all right we'll see what it looks like whenever i'm done okay i think it turned out pretty good looks nice and seasoned looks a lot more like a barbecue pit on the inside doesn't look so nasty with the nasty oil so definitely change colors i'm satisfied with the way it turned out i just let the fire completely burn out um but it went well it turned out good so thanks for watching and just keep a lookout for a video in the future on maybe my first smoke on this pit so thanks for watching
