in today's video I'm going to show  you how I painted this portrait   in oil pastels from beginning to end  including some failing along the way this is the first time that I'm trying this  Canson’s paper, I heard that it's very good   for soft pastels and I thought that maybe it  could work for oil pastels as well since the   one that I normally use for soft pastels and oil  pastels is the same and it works really well but   I cannot say the same thing for this one because I  like very smooth papers that don't have much tooth   or a lot of texture on them and that feel smooth  to the touch and this one is kinda rough Maybe it will work better for soft pastel I don't  know but for this I felt that I had to put more   paint than usual and you still could see a lot  of graininess from the texture of the paper but   also it was very hard to blend, much harder both  to achieve a smooth look and also on the hands. I tried blending with my hands as I normally do   but it felt quite… I don't know, rough, abrasive.  It was just too much so I tried and I still   wasn't able to achieve a smooth look so  I tried with the paper stump and it was   peeling and leaving all these paper fibers on  the painting and those get stuck on the paint. I think I could have make it work but it  wouldn't have been a very nice experience   so I just decided to start again and using what  I know it works and so I just used another sheet   of Pastelmat and I retraced the drawing as I  normally do because I don't like to paint on   the final surface in case I have to erase or  I don't go on the pencil marks on it With oil pastels, because they are  very prone to smudging with your hand   I try to not put my hand on the painting   like at all if I can avoid it and also to  work left to right because I'm right-handed in this video I'm not gonna go in depth on any  particular topic because I am planning to make a   video on different types of paper that could work  for oil pastels. That one has been highly requested. So the questions that I've been receiving a  lot, like the most common ones have been: which   type of paper can I use to paint with oil pastels, how to layer how to blend and how to achieve   details and fine lines yeah some others about skin tones and something else, I have it written down   So because also many people wanted just to see  the process and how I work I thought this one   would be it. I am not gonna go into a lot of detail  because I will make a separate one for the papers   and another one for painting details so the  other two are the layering the blending and   the layering I kind of do the same thing that I  do with oil paints and soft pastels because oil   pastels feel like a combination of the two. So  I try to first have a light colored layer and from   then I just keep adding paint as I feel it needs  it, instead of using a unique color to do like the   gris……grisaille, I don't know, instead of using  like burnt umber for example to make all the   values of the painting underneath like the underpainting I just go straight with color I think   it's I think the result at the end is more vibrant  but yeah but maybe I can show in a separate video   or something I haven't planned much this one and  the blending it's actually very straightforward. These paints are very creamy and they blend really  well especially if your hands get a bit warm   which mine usually are not but still with the  heat of the hands they blend really well. I use   my fingers for bigger areas or when I need a very  smooth and soft transition or gradient and I use   the paper stamps when I need more precision just  because with my fingers you there are things you   cannot do but yeah I will go on the detailing  part on a specific video I came I don't know   I came up with some tricks I would say to make  fine details like the eyelashes or hair strands   or basically fine things I don't know I thought  I would put up this video it's only 14 minutes or   so just for those that wanted a longer video than  a reel to see how I actually build the painting   I know in Instagram it looks like it's done by  itself but it's not well in any way just so you   know I'm working on quite a lot of things  right now but I hope I will be able to have   some of those in the near future hopefully in a  couple of weeks I will have some other about oil   pastels but before that I also have prepared or  almost ready one or two that are watercolor and   oil painting so I will see how I schedule things  but yeah I'm working on them. If you have any more   questions please leave them below and maybe  I will be able to include them in the videos   and if you have any suggestions as well because  I am very new to this and I'm trying to improve   so yeah I hope it was useful it took me quite  a long time to put together I removed many of the   clips that I thought they were unnecessary  or my face was on the frame or whatever   and I hope that you can see what  I'm doing even if it's not real time yeah I don't think you have anything  else to add so I'm going to let you   continue the video and see you  soon have a nice day bye bye [Music]
