[Music] well i built this smoker i had different intentions initially i was going to make it much smaller and uh actual tabletop version something that you could pick up and kind of throw around clearly didn't happen i don't know what the hell i did but uh kind of let my imagination get away from me and due to that i end up making something significantly larger and heavier that's just not practical to pick up i mean i could barely get it on the stand this was a nice little trailblazer so yeah this this smoker here this offset smoker uh definitely works it's made some good product already i've already had a couple of really good cooks out of it as you'll see in my note here that was a terrible segue into the actual build portion of the video but um you know it just happened sometimes the actual making of the video isn't at the forefront of your brain all right here i'm cutting one of the edges of the square for the firebox and then i'm just gonna weld it all up i like to go in i don't know like one and a half inch to two inch beads and kind of move around a little bit just to minimize the amount of heat that i put into the box itself but now that i've got it all welded up i'm just going to grind it down knock down some of the splatter and smooth out a couple of the high portions of the welds all right i'm cutting a long piece here i'm actually going to cut this thing into two different pieces it's going to be the v portion uh which is the bottom of the smoke chamber itself and uh you'll see i'm starting to scribe some lines with the angle grinder kind of marked them out because these are going to be the bend points um i definitely should have bent toward the cuts not away from them which uh you'll see here a little bit kind of exposes those sharp edges it's really ugly so that's definitely something i'll do in the future here i'm tacking together those two bottom v pieces that i was talking about for the bottom of the smoke chamber let's get them tacked up then i'm going to use some magnets to hold it in place while trying to tack it to the main smoke chamber here and those little mag tab things they work really well definitely make the job a lot easier especially when you're working by yourself i'm just going to get a bunch of tacks on here make sure everything's nice and straight before i weld anything out [Music] well here i've got the firebox chalked up next to the main smoke chamber and kind of just did a couple quick beads and then i made a cardboard template uh to help me kind of lay out how i was going to cut this piece of metal to fill in that gap that's on the bottom side of the smoke chamber and here i'm just drawing it out with some marker on the sheet and then gonna use the plasma cutter and a straight edge and just knock this thing out of the park works really slick it's super fast and i definitely prefer this over an angle grinder not that you couldn't do this with an angle grinder it's just a lot messier i personally think it's slower and it's not nearly as enjoyable these additional triangles are actually going to be for the um chimney stack i believe it's called it's typically called the receiver over where the chimney goes and um you'll see this works out pretty well it's nice to just kind of keep one tool in your hand and work through it instead of constantly changing you know tools like oh going from the welder going to the plasma cutter going back to the welder it i just like to do as much as i can in one process before moving on [Music] here i'm using a couple of magnets just to get this little triangle piece in place that'll actually be the top portion of that receiver and since it's the top that's the reason i cut off this square portion quick i put the square chimney up there and that was the size and here i'm just cutting out some additional rectangular pieces that'll kind of go between the top and the bottom of that receiver to connect up with the chimney [Music] here i'm cutting out the door of the firebox the plasma cutter just freehanding it i'm doing some decently straight lines but it's not that big a deal and i just pull it out with a magnet tool and then i'm going to cut up a thick quarter inch piece of plate steel there's actually two of them and then a piece of angle iron get welded to the bottom of the firebox this creates kind of like a little channel where the coals can drop down but when you put a log over the top of those coals it has a nice amount of air going around it and burns up really nice [Music] now it's just cutting up some of the door trim and tacking that all in place and this will be the door i'm going to prop it up and use these uh little silver bullet hinges and then get the door tacked in place it actually went really smooth kind of wants to sit in its little hole and uh swings out nice and just uh i was really happy with the door it went a lot faster than i had expected and here i'm cutting out the main smoke chamber door uh and i gotta say with a flat bar and these kind of mag tab things it made it really simple and it just wasn't a pain in the butt at all i think just taking your time and marking out the door uh location itself was uh considerably more time consuming but without these magnetic tabs and that flat bar i mean you could easily just tack this flat bar to it but then that's a lot of grinding and cutting and it's kind of a pain in the butt and uh it's just so much more enjoyable using the plasma cutter [Music] jumping around a little bit here but now i'm mocking up the the chimney stack and getting my lines there now i'm just cutting that portion out again with the plasma cutter make short work of it and then i'm gonna get it up there and get it tacked in i didn't take video of me welding it out fully but it's just a little baffle in the smoke box figured i'd get that thing in there didn't want it completely exposed to the fire and i'm just gonna get it all welded in there these pieces of angle iron are actually going to be what hold the cooking grates in place and i just want to taper a couple of them off they definitely so you don't have this sharp edge poking off inside the smoker when you're reaching in so just going to get these things tacked in place [Music] now it's on to the uh three quarter inch square tubes i'm cutting up for the frames of the cooking racks themselves uh make short work of it on this vertical bandsaw or the you know my wind chop saw that i modified it into a vertical band saw but and just throw it down on the weld table do a couple of quick ones just using a square and then i'll start using magnets here a little bit and it goes really quick you make a couple of them very fast and uh they work really well they're nice and strong [Music] now i'm breaking out the plasma cutter again i gotta say i just like using it you could easily do this with a grinder no problem um but it definitely does it nice and smooth with the plasma cutter and you can freehand it or use a straight edge like i was doing there and uh it just goes really fast it's a nice clean cut and uh again i'm just not burning up discs or anything just really like it and uh i would highly recommend it i'm very happy with my investment into the plasma cutter and then it's just a matter of tacking them onto the the frames uh attacking the grates onto the frames and you don't have to tack every single connection point i just do because it's really not hard it goes fast it's kind of fun and then it just really makes them that much stronger and then you don't have kind of that rattling noise when you're pulling them in and out [Music] now i'm starting on the frame of the smoker itself this is what the wheels will be attached to and kind of have the upright posts and uh i really don't care for how i went about this i mean the frame itself is fine for the stand the wheels i'm definitely going to be changing i do not like the the casters on there i'm gonna go with a bigger set of like wagon wheels i'm gonna modify this cart or that the actual base of the smoker in the future and then also on one side the chimney side just have some solid legs that have a little bit wider base the finished product is a little on the tippy side and i just don't really care for that at all but um this base again for what its purpose was at the beginning worked just fine and it made pretty quick work of it just getting these legs cut out and propped up and plumb and tacked in and then putting in the cross members to make it nice and sturdy uh it just went pretty fast and it really wasn't a bad build at all just trying to make everything as square as possible and you know rolling with it that way [Music] yeah so here's me welding on those casters again even if i would've just used some plates to put the casters a little bit further out from its center of mass it would have definitely been better it works the way it is but it's just not nearly as stable as i'd prefer and i don't know like i said regardless i'm going to be modifying it but either way so here i'm just finishing up a couple of the welds that will be difficult once this smoker's on the cart but um just to get the the smoker attached to the cart you'll see here i put it on a different cart to weld the cart to the smoker and uh that seemed to work really well i was gonna try to lift the smoker and put it onto the cart while i was on the ground but that would have been extremely difficult because it is definitely getting heavy here you see i welded a couple of just pieces of eighth inch flat bar to kind of give the door something to rest up against so that way it'd be a nice even seam so i can get these trim pieces figured out where they're going to be in relation to the door and kind of get everything mocked up and then i'll start tacking it in place and uh this goes really smooth actually i was actually surprised at how quick this went especially with getting these hinges on here and everything um just kind of uh started kind of getting grooved this day when i was working on it and uh next thing you know the trim starts to pull together and starting to really look like a pretty close to finished product so definitely happy with how this one turned out as far as this day you'll see a common theme here i kind of like the stitch weld or not even stitch weld spot weld these trim pieces on i think it's not 100 necessary to fully weld them and i think it just really adds a cool look almost a steampunk vibe to the smoker for some reason that's what i get out of it same thing with the firebox door but i don't know i just kind of like that that whole look and it uh it goes quick you're not putting a ton of heat into it so [Music] and here i'm just making the damper for the chimney pretty simple 3 8 inch round bar and a couple of pieces of pipe that fit over it nice and then just a piece of that eighth inch flat square [Music] i got this idea from chud's bbq it's another youtube channel he cooks and makes smokers more cooking though really good cook about actually a mind to duplicate a couple of his recipes but this is the way that he controls fire just uh opening the door little increments and i want to try it because he seems to do pretty well with the heat management [Music] and my original thought was just to put a little slide vent in here because why not right but here you've got little like 3 8 inch increments until you're like pretty much as open as you'd ever want to be besides wide open so why not get a fairly decent seal there so i'll smother a fire pretty good so that's a shout out to bradley robinson at sheds bbq [Music] just cutting a hole out for the drain for the main smoke chamber using a template that i bought off amazon and this is a chunk of tubing for the handle as you'll see here in a little bit the happened there all right i actually got this thing all finished up about a week ago i was just editing the video and i realized that i didn't have any pictures past when i messed up on welding the handle together here but there's the the handle on there it spins a little bit just like that keeps nice and cool got the gauge on there right now i'm pretty darn hot because i just put a log on there 400 degrees but it also don't man don't mind me don't bother me also got the uh drain installed there i just welded on a bushing and then put another reducing bushing in there and i got a little quarter inch valve it works pretty good uh the stand sucks those four casters was a bad idea um and i don't even know what i was thinking just probably in a hurry or something but i'm definitely going to modify this so that on the firebox end i'll have larger almost like wagon wheel looking things and then on this end i'll definitely put just solid feet that'll branch out too because it's pretty darn narrow so the feet will branch out to either side uh making it more squat and stable so it's not as tippy it's not terribly tippy right now but i mean as you can see i got it on a wood deck and we definitely have beers around here so if somebody were to fall into that it would definitely be bad there's a firebox got a good draw well as soon as i open it it's not a good draw anymore but put some hickory on there and right now you can see how the the drawer is slightly open the lid is and that's actually because of these uh pork belly pieces that i have on this tray this tray is just slightly too wide so it pokes out a little bit that might give you a better idea so either way get some ribs and some pork belly bites on there i want to lose all my heat yeah so that's the uh that's the smoker it's been working pretty good i've already cooked a handful of things on there and uh definitely happy with it but uh more to come because this was more of a proof of concept than anything so see you guys next time but again appreciate you guys watching i'll see you guys at the next video remember if you like this stuff uh feel free to like and subscribe it is appreciated just know that so thanks again you guys take it easy
