hello I'm Odin and today I'm gonna make the second half to the Donkey Kong video I did a little while ago now what's fun is this has nothing to do with Donkey Kong a fan will find where this pops up in one of the Donkey Kong games I'm sure but what I'm making is another prop for the 1920s themed parade that my Aunt Maggie was part of in Idaho that happened a little while ago I've been sitting in this video for a bit uh so the the theme is 1920s they want to do something kind of prohibition sort of themed you know zoot suits and and and gangsters so uh for today's video I'm gonna make a pair of 1928a Thompson machine guns now we all know that I enjoy making things and today's video is all about making an historic weapon but what if you had a game where you could make your own legacy of Heroes well you can with bloodline Heroes of with us bloodline Heroes of lithus is an RPG all about merging Bloodlines bringing together generations and making your legacy so you as the High Guardian take control of the city of light and go on a journey through the world of with us now in other games that I've seen you're always sacrificing a hero or Champion you already have in order to upgrade and make a different hero stronger but in this game you customize your Champions by merging different Bloodlines together and developing a family tree until you find a unique combination of powerful abilities that are passed down through the generations that suit your own gameplay Style you can continue to create generations of Heroes and champions you can defeat the armies of darkness and explore the delightful world of lithos with all of its fantasy races including Orcs lichens demons and Dragonborn use the link in the description of this video to try out the game for free or you can scan the QR code that you see on your screen and when you do not only are you supporting my channel but you'll yield to get yourself an exclusive starter pack with 200 diamonds two summoning crystals and five stamina potions so I want to say thank you very much to Bloodlines Heroes of lithos for supporting my channel [Music] I really hope you guys aren't sick of seeing me work the laser I'm really enjoying this tool but remember this just speeds things up for me and gives me more accuracy everything I'm doing today I could just do the laser night with a laser knife oh a laser knife with a razor knife and paper patterns the first thing I wanted to cut out are the core shapes the thin pieces of plywood that I want to use to keep the foam weapons from being floppy I made my own custom pattern for the laser cutting file by basically tracing pictures that I found online and by looking at close-ups of collectors pictures I was able to get more markings and Tiny details this way as well I had used inkscape as my tracing program which let me import the art file directly into light firm and I started cutting my project many of the pieces are the same shapes so laser cutting is ideal and cutting most of the project from floor mat foam is very easy even for a 10 watt diode laser I consistently got the pieces to be cut out completely without needing to help any of the lines with a hobby knife Place Another foam sheet under the laser test of the cup will fit inside of the puzzle Edge and just like that I can start cutting another one I am scope fund thank you for the cutter uh this is yeah this is what I've been wanting for a very long time as much as I enjoy watching the laser cut things out the benefit of having mechanical assistance is that I can work on other things at the same time mostly I'm just gluing together pieces and parts with contact cement and resetting the files to cut up more of the same part and many of the pieces have additional details etched into the foam it panel lines Vents and some writing this process takes very little time after I've made the files that the computer uses to make the laser do the cutting a laser is faster at cutting things out but not overall faster there's still some computer setup and testing that is needed now when a laser has finished its work I start to sand the edges of the stocks because what I want to do is round over the corners these are supposed to be made out of wood not blocks of foam and each stock has a left and a right half which will be glued over that thin plywood core and then there's a little hand sanding to remove any marks from the belt sander and rotary tool I found the rotary tool was best for rounding off the foregrip the part that you grab that is in front of the Tommy Gun one of the nicest things about this particular historic weapon is its boxy shape it's just the way that they were made at the time and the look is easier to replicate you know the barrel is round but you know that's it the rest of it are all boxes or boxes of grounded corners after gluing the first two body halves to the wood core I round off the grip and sand down any wood that pokes out from the foam also you may have noticed the four millimeter strips down the sides of the body well these are needed to make the channel that allows me to insert the metal tube that will be the barrel now there's a second layer of body pieces these need some angles added and doing that before the glued on is a lot easier there's less chance of grinding somewhere I want to keep that should be the last of the stuff that I really need to grind down I mean I I can do some little bits to some of the little Parts I have just to add some dimensionality but um that should be it or gluing gluing is easy not like it has been hard I'm just making three of them the smaller side pieces glue right over the four millimeter Channel covers and I have a small box that fits under the barrel to complete the body you can see there's three sets here now remember I'm making three of these at the same time I just super glue this little box in place and then I add the other body side I included all the markings that I could find for the 1928 Thompson and the markings are different on each side next I glue the two halves of the stock onto the center wood and I'm very careful not to bend the center wood as I'm applying the foam stocks because I really do not want to have warped stocks on these weapons smash smash smash Mash it's a it's starting to look like a thing and it's kind of looked like a thing for a little while but there we go it's starting to look like a thing okay I've got two more to put together so this is going to end up going up here yeah so I got two more to do the the stock and and the sides on so I'll do those in just a second and then all three of them I'll stop and sand down the whatever extra wood is poking out in the back uh I'm not too surprised the things don't line up perfectly this is way better than I could have cut by hand so um I'm not upset I'm I'm uh I'm very happy right now okay well let me get the other two done and I'll be right back it's kind of rewarding to me that uh the pattern for this was totally just drawn on inkscape right I mean it's it's kind of a box right basically the main body is a box and you have these rounded boxes that go on to it so it's not that far-fetched of an idea but still I didn't physically pattern any part of this this is the first time I've seen it put together physically I've only realized like okay if I have this you know this layer of foam I'll cut it out glue it on that layer of foam and cut it out glued onto that layer up it's working it's even got space for a a metal Barrel this is a yeah these guys need to go here I got a piece that wraps over it to help glue that on because the barrels in these things aren't very long I'm yeah so I've got three bodies with three stalks and three grips done um let's make some uh drum barrels so this particular model right the the classic gangster version of the Tommy Gun the classic Bonnie and Clyde version of the Tommy Gun uh didn't have a regular stick magazine like we're accustomed to now it actually had a drum Barrel so it was a big circular Barrel that you would load your ammo into and it would roll up inside and you cranked it or something I've never actually touched a real one so I have an idea how it works but I don't know how it works but I know how to make a round foam one the drum magazines were something I started gluing together while the other parts were still getting cut out what I've got are four nearly identical Parts this one piece has an extra surface detail all the others just look like this in the back because this is part of the clip that attaches to the front to the however it works so I just need to put this part on more contact cement then I use a heat gun to open up all the small detail lines I like them a little Bolder looking got a decorative piece I want to put on the end I should probably no that's fine I can leave it like that so to hide the seam lines that I've got going on here because it's four layers put together I need to sand this one contact cement on the outside and apply a two millimeter trim piece that is the drum seam added onto it open up that seam line just a little bit more and heat seal all the parts that I've got so far Slide the Barrel in and you can see where the barrel and the drum connect and test fit the drum magazine I didn't expect to actually smug enough fit that I would just stick oh that makes me pretty happy yeah that makes it that makes me pretty happy all right I got some details I need to go in the front I want to glue all those on First and um ah let's just start putting details on some of the details are the winders that go on the outside of the drum and these are all super glued in place I want to use a gorilla glue to secure the barrels the glue will foam up a little on the inside and fill in the gaps when it sets but I'm also going to add a touch of super glue to the end this will actually secure the metal tube until the Gorilla Glue sets up two millimeter detail panel on the top will hide some seams and a super glue some more details to that top panel and I've got some lever details that I'll super glue to the sides now these should be different on either side of the weapon but for Simplicity of this model I left them identical I add in some two millimeter strips to the underside of the body just to hide those layer lines and I use contact cement to attach the site details to the top of the body now there's two uprights on either side of the site and then a rangefinder piece goes in the center I really like all the detailed markings that I can get with my laser cutter one of the few rounded bits is at the back of the body and a 20 millimeter half round dowel works really well for this and each one needs a button glued to it this bit is the one thing that I would change and that's the pull knob that goes on top I cut these from 15 millimeter round foam dowels and then I sort it rounded them off now I'd rather just find some 10 millimeter foam balls or something similar if I was to make more of these in the future now the remaining parts I need to put on are all details that go on the barrel there's a rectangle with a grill work pattern on it and that wraps around the barrel right above the foregrip and it's a heat radiator for the barrel I sand the metal Barrel to give it kind of a tooth it's better for gluing and then I use contact cement to glue on the foregrip and then wrap that Grille work panel around the barrel right up against the grip I have another panel with a small Grille pattern and when wrapped around the barrel it makes a flash of pressure right on the front I bevel the ends so it matches the original weapon and wrap a small piece around the base and then super glue the front sight in place I've got one part left to attach I want to do that before I paint it yeah all right I probably should Mark this the drum magazine fits so well already I just need a little super glue to hold each drum to the body of the Thompson hahaha all right yeah [Laughter] I don't typically make multiples of things right because up until now I had to cut all these parts out by hand and that would have taken about as long or longer than it took to cut out uh three worth with Mr laser uh now of course like I've been trying to say before there's computer chair time right because there's the the time I spend making the art program that ended up using as a pattern now typically I end up spending that time after the project cleaning up the paper pattern that I made in order to share it with you so instead I'm doing the work up front that I can then use with the laser to cut out the parts that I want which let me make multiples of the same weapon okay this is pretty cool uh Aunt Maggie only wanted two it was really kind of tempting to make three because I kind of wanted to keep one I still do but I might I might give give her the option to have all three for the parade one might come back it may not I might just I probably would ever make another one actually guys and they're going to be painted very simply uh so the first step is I'm going to plasti dip them and then I'm going to tape them off and I will spray paint all the handles uh Brown and then uh do a little little bit of treatment to those to get them to be a little bit nicer and then it'll just just be a little bit of of silver dry brushing on all the remaining black parts that's it it's it's these are already way more detailed than they should be for for the production they're going to but uh I had a lot of fun making them so now I need to have some fun painting them I'll be right back after coating all three Thompsons with black PlastiDip I tape off the sections that I want to paint Brown and hand paint the wood portions with an acrylic craft paint I have some bar clamps attached to my table so I can slip the muzzle over them and let the paint dry without having to touch anything after the brown paint dries I apply some liquid brown shoe polish the Polish adds a nice richer color to the paint then I pour out a little bit of black shoe polish and start sponge painting that over the brown now purposefully leaving streaks in unpainted areas to help create a wood grain effect and as I'm experimenting I decided to cover the black plasti dip with a coat of black shoe polish it looks like it'll be a deeper darker richer black that way and the heat gun will warm up the blue tape a little bit so it won't pull off the PlastiDip or change the Finish right now I think I like the way the black shoe polish looks I think I'm going to go ahead and just completely cover them all with black shoe polish just paint them down I really like the way it looks it makes a big difference anyway continue and so I decided to coat them all and let them dry for a few hours the last thing I want to use is a tiny amount of rub and buff silver paint now this is very easy to overdo I want it to be a very subtle amount of silver I just want to barely catch the corners some of the edges and a very light dusting on any of the flat portions I really I really like the shoe polish on the black and I really like the the the the wee bit of silver from from the rub and buff so yeah this is very cool [Music] [Music] all the materials I used for this project I already had in the shop I put a list in the description of the video [Music] I actually really enjoyed making a historical replica I've been doing movie props and I've been doing video game props and I've been doing comic book props all right because that's fun if there's something historical something else that that might be really interesting to to make please leave a leave a comment below and let me know what what you think might be a fun build to do and the fact that I'm able to do this with a laser cutter really sped things up for me I didn't I didn't feel like I labored over cutting out all these parts cutting out you know what 12 copies of the stock over and over and over again I don't really personally enjoy doing that I mean I can obviously I can do it but doing it with a laser cutter was fun being able to adjust to the millimeter how things fit together on the Fly and re-cutting a new one in in just a minute or two is fun so making three of these is only because I had the ability to have the parts cut up for me by by a laser cutter which made it a repeatable thing and then they just turned in model kits and this was a lot of fun to do this was a lot of fun to put together uh I don't think I would have ever considered this project on my own it's not something I would have picked up on as what I wanted to do um now I know one of the things a lot of you are going to say is I need to make a violin case now right I need to make a violin case because classically you put one of these in a violin case in a zoot suit and then you're a gangsta well no then you're a gangster um that's not gonna work why isn't that gonna work in order for this particular weapon to fit into a a violin case you need to depress and pull the stock off because the stock comes right off the the this handle may be a minute but the barrel needs to come off and none of that happens this is glued solid this is all it's gonna do so this isn't going to fit into a violin case anymore and um since I am going to be giving these to my aunt in just a couple of hours uh I'm not going to have him anywhere to make a case or so I don't really care it would be really neat if these end up in one of those old-timey uh photo booths that would be a great use for these uh a playhouse would be really good short films things like that something secure where you can have something that looks realistic like this and it's safe I always say this is really funny because this is exactly where this is going walking down the street carrying one of these is not a good idea but that's literally what my family's gonna go do so or did do in fact uh you stick around right after you get done saying my thing here I'm gonna have a few pictures of of the parade because I wanted to share them with you with these and the barrels that I did because uh for once I finally made props for my family because I know there's going to be lots of different things that you can make from foam but this is what Odin makes leave a comment in the uh in the in the link in the links below please leave a comment in the video Below in the video one of those things whatever you're supposed to be you know I know there's going to be lots of different ways you can
