welcome to the oasis my name is mike and today i'm going to be giving you my top tips and tricks for the oculus quest 2. now i've been using the quest 2 pretty much every day since i've received it it's become my go-to vr headset due to the convenience of using it in standalone mode and the freedom that it provides using it to play pcvr content wirelessly using virtual desktop and in this time that i've had with the headset i've learned a few things about it that i thought would be worthwhile sharing now many of these tips will also apply to the original quest and other vr headsets available on the market so in this video i've included a range of tips which should be useful whether you're new to vr a vr veteran or even a vr content creator if you learned something new about the quest 2 that you didn't know about before leave a little like on this video i'd really really appreciate it but for now let's jump straight into the tips and tricks so without further ado let's dive in okay so the first tip i want to share is about using the quest 2 in the dark now the quests tracking is pretty robust it works well in most lighting conditions and even works with green screens but it doesn't work so well in the dark however you can use an infrared illuminator which is mostly invisible to the human eye but will be visible to the quest's tracking cameras a bit like how infrared is used in cctv cameras to help them see in the dark the infrared illuminator i have here is around 25 us dollars and comes with a power adapter included however you can also use it with a battery pack which is sold separately if you wish i put this to the test whilst recording my blair witch gameplay in a dark wooded area and i was actually quite surprised how well it performed if you plan to use this solution please ensure you don't look directly into the ir light when it's turned on although it's mostly invisible to the human eye other than a slight red glow from the leds it can be harmful to your eyes if you look directly into it for too long the next tip is about carry cases now although most of us sadly aren't going anywhere right now if you do want to go somewhere with your quest it's best to use a protective case as the displays behind the lenses in particular can be damaged by direct sunlight if you have the original soft strap or the official elite strap installed you can actually use the quest too in the original quests carry case this might be useful if you can pick one up cheap or you still have one from the original quest to make it fit inside the case you just need to put the quest 2 in upside down the controller slots don't fit the chunkier quest to control rings that well so i'd recommend you use a lens protector just in case the controllers come loose whilst traveling sadly the elite battery strap doesn't fit in the original quest cases it's a bit chunkier at the back although this doesn't really matter as you can only buy the elite battery strap bundled with the official quest 2 carry case anyway right now both the official elite and elite battery straps have been removed from sale by oculus due to quality control issues but i haven't experienced any of these problems with them myself if you've experienced a broken elite strap please let me know in the comments down below and let's hope oculus fix the problem and they're back in stock before the holidays quick tip you can change the default home environment in the quest 2 by going into settings and virtual environment i personally really like the cyber city environment but you have a few different options to choose from including a pass-through environment so you can see the real world around you whilst you're navigating the menus this would be ideal if you have kids or pets that you want to keep an eye on whilst in vr the next tip might sound a little bit strange but it's about keeping hydrated sometimes you get so immersed in your favorite vr game yeah i'm looking at you population one that you completely forget to drink anything for hours on end to stay hydrated and on top form you can use a water bottle like this one it's got a built-in straw in the cap so you can take a quick drink without taking the headset off and without making a complete mess it kind of looks like a big adult sippy cup it sounds stupid but this has become an essential part of my vr setup i've added a link to one in the description down below the next tip is about hand tracking now this feature really makes the quest and quest 2 stand out from the crowd as very few vr headsets available on the market have hand tracking built in you can enable a setting to have hand tracking automatically turn on when the controllers aren't in sight of the headset and this is particularly useful if you just want to put the headset on to download a game or check out your favorite vr youtube channel without picking up your controllers to enable this go to settings device hands and controllers and enable hand tracking also enable auto switch between hands and controllers i can't wait for apps like vr chat and big screen to take advantage of hand tracking as controllers aren't really needed for those types of applications and it would make hand gestures more natural in those social applications let me know what you think of the hand tracking on the oculus quest in the comments down below the next tip is about audio now for the most part the audio built into the quest 2 is absolutely fine but if you want the best audio experience i would highly recommend using a pair of over-ear headphones now the problem with using headphones is that most come with a really long cable which can just get in the way whilst you're playing sadly we can't get rid of the cable completely just yet using bluetooth headphones as the bluetooth latency is just too high right now on the quest but if your headphones feature a removable 3.5 millimeter headphone jack like these steel series arctis 3 headphones then you can buy a short 30 centimeter replacement cable which is the perfect length to keep everything nicely out of the way i've added a link to this replacement short cable from star tech in the description down below and the nice thing about this one is that it has a right angle jack on the end that goes into the headset and a straight jack connector that goes into your headphones it's a cheap but effective solution to make using a pair of headphones with the oculus quest 2 a little bit better quick tip you can double tap either side of the quest to with your hand to show you the pass-through mode at any time this is super useful if you want to get a glimpse of the real world around you if you need to simply double tap it again and you're straight back into your vr game or experience if this feature isn't turned on by default you can enable it in the experimental features section of the settings menu the next tip is about ipd now ipd is your interpupillary distance which is essentially the distance between your eyes adjusting the headset to match your ipd as close as possible will provide the most comfortable vr experience and will also prevent any eye strain in the future i imagine headsets with eye tracking could auto calibrate themselves to adjust to the wearer but sadly we're not there just yet for now we have to roughly know our own ipd spacing to make the correct adjustments ourselves you can find out your own ipd through your opticians or you can simply measure it yourself you can do this in a mirror using a ruler and measure the distance between the center of each of your pupils if you have an iphone you can check out an app called eye measure which is completely free which can do it for you the quest 2 has three ipd settings which can be manually adjusted and you should try to get it as close to your own ipd as possible setting one is 58 millimeters setting 2 is 63 millimeters and setting 3 is 68 millimeters if you find that any of these settings don't feel quite right you can carefully move the lenses to sit in between some of these settings and it should sit there just fine i have mine set in the center between setting 1 and setting 2 as my ipd is around 60 millimeters so i hope that helps the next tip is about sharing your vr experience vr is great but sometimes you want to share the experience to show your friends and family exactly what you can see inside the headset whilst you're playing you can easily cast your gameplay to a phone using the oculus app by going to sharing in the main menu of the headset and selecting cast this will show you a list of devices which you can cast to as long as they're all on the same network you can also cast to a chromecast device connected to a tv if you have one if you want to cast to your pc using a chrome or edge browser go to oculus.com forward slash casting and you'll see your pc in the casting menu inside the headset this will cast both gameplay and audio quick tip if you're in a game or experience and something epic happens and you want to capture that moment you can simply press and hold the oculus button on the right controller and tap the trigger to take a screenshot this will be saved directly to your headset you can access the screenshots by connecting your headset to a pc and navigating to the oculus folder and screenshots you can also share them directly to a facebook page if you wish the next tip will be useful if you're having a problem with your headset or if you're selling it or passing it on to a friend or family member so they can log in with their own account to factory reset the headset ensure your headset is powered off and hold the power button and volume down buttons together for around 10 seconds this will put the headset into usb update mode and here you can select factory reset in the menu by using the volume buttons to move up and down and the power button to select obviously be warned that all your data including save games will be erased from the headset when using the factory reset function this next tip will be useful for those vr content creators out there that want to record or live stream their vr games to share online i use a little bit of blu-tack or something similar to cover up the quest's internal proximity sensor which is located just above the ipd indicator this will allow you to take the headset off without causing the display to turn off meaning that you can continue to see your live stream when using a chromecast or pc casting please note though that if you put the quest on the floor or on a table it will time out if it doesn't detect any movement after a short amount of time hopefully this helps some of you budding vr content creators out there quick tip if you move around your play space and things aren't quite centered correctly simply press and hold the oculus button on the right controller to recenter your play space the next tip is to help keep you safe whilst in vr the oculus boundary system is pretty decent but i personally prefer to use something on the floor along with the boundary system so i know where the center of my play space is at all times just by the texture underneath my feet now you could buy a product like the proxy mat that i use or just simply use a small rug or piece of carpet i set it up so i know that when i'm on the proxy mat i can punch out in all directions without hitting any walls or furniture as long as i'm on the mat and this gives me that extra bit of confidence to enjoy games like super hot and gorn without fear of punching my walls or damaging my controllers this can be also useful for content creators like me so i know that when i'm standing on the map i'm centered on my camera this next tip will be useful if you wear glasses in vr i have a mod prescription myself and use lens inserts inside the headset just to sharpen things up a bit i used to wear my glasses inside all my vr headsets but i once scratched the lenses of my glasses and the lenses of my original oculus rift by the two rubbing together which turned out to be an expensive mistake ever since i've used prescription lens inserts they're quick easy and a safe way to have your prescription lenses always in your headset and ready to go there's a couple of different companies out there that make these but the one i use and recommend is witmo vr i've added their website in the description down below if you're interested quick tip oculus are constantly pushing out new updates and the automatic rollout system can be a bit random as to when you're going to get the update yourself i'd recommend checking for the latest updates under the about sections in the setting menu and manually checking for the latest updates yourself regularly this next tip will be useful if you happen to buy a vr game or experience from the oculus store but for whatever reason you're not happy with your purchase you can easily request a refund through the official oculus mobile app the only requirement is that you've played the game for less than two hours and it's within the 14 days of the original purchase just go to settings in your oculus app purchase history click on the game or experience and select refund it's really that quick and easy and the final and probably best tip i have for you is to check out the content available via sidequest sidequest hosts experimental vr games and experiences which aren't available on the official oculus store this is completely safe and i also want to be clear that it doesn't promote piracy in any way a lot of the content available is completely free to check out and some of my personal favorites are hyperdash pavlov and the virtual desktop patch which is required to play pcvr content wirelessly on both quest and quest 2. i did a whole video guide on sciquest which i'll link up here right now if you want to learn more okay so there we have it that's my top tips and tricks for the oculus quest 2. one more thing before i finish up the video and that is that i keep on getting asked about this blue facial interface kit that i have on my quest to now this is actually from vr cover they make awesome products and they've just launched their full replacement facial interface kit for the quest 2 on their website i've added a link in the description down below but this blue version which they sent out a little while ago is a prototype and apparently i wasn't actually supposed to show it in any videos but unfortunately i didn't get the memo a lot of you have been asking about this cool blue color and if there's any other colors available to spice up the look of your headset along with making it more comfortable and hygienic as you can remove these sort of face pads using velcro i'm actually working with vr cover on something really cool and as soon as i have more information to share about that i'll make a full dedicated video all about it so make sure you stay tuned for that but aside from that i hope you found the video useful let me know in the comments down below if you learned something new or maybe that you have a tip that you want to share that i missed out in this video or you have a question that you want to know a bit more information about drop them all in the comments down below leave a like if you liked the video make sure you're subscribed for all my future vr content and as always i'll see you on the next one [Applause] [Music] cheers [Music]
