for about fourteen minutes away from our scheduled green flag time of five o'clock this afternoon couple of our veterans are here to cover the action on pit road really one of the stories of today's event maybe a changing of the guard or at least the precursor to that in our starting lineup today the names you're familiar with Dale Earnhardt Rusty Wallace Mark Martin Ernie Irvan Sterling Marlin well they're back aways in the starting lineup today the front row made up of a couple of NASCAR's new guard in fact not very long ago he would have found these two drivers featured in our saturday broadcast of the champion sparkplug 300 joe nemechek on the outside polo jeff gordon the poll qualifier standing by to talk to the pole-sitter today is our Randy Pemberton well thank you much Rick Benjamin you're absolutely right these are two guys that are stars on the rise here in the Winston Cup circuit and of course Jeff on your second coca-cola 600 last year you started deep in the field but had a great run finished second what can we expect here tonight when we're starting the sunlight here and then go into the night night well you know I don't think that the fastest car is gonna be fast right now unless they can make a live changes under under pit stop so you know our strategy is to go out there and play it real calm ride around for about four or five hundred miles and be there you know we got to be there at the end and that's something we haven't been doing lately and it hasn't been any of our fault you just having some bad luck so we need some good breaks a lot of luck we'll do a lot for this team we've been running great all year long hey good luck tonight and the folk gold six other good thank you also on the front road today a driver who just a few years ago was running many stock cars in the state of Florida former Bush grand national champion Joe Nemechek on the outside of row on the editor of stock car racing magazine dr. dick Berggren set to talk to Joe and 30-year old Joe Nemechek has never started a coca-cola 600 in fact this is only your second ever Winston Cup start here the thundering herd is behind you butterflies Oh a little bit you know I got they got the cold chills you know it's uh this is just great especially being here on the front row Monica Chevrolet Larry Hendrick Motorsports it's a great day for racing long long race six hundred miles are you concerned about fatigue well the biggest thing is I think I'm in pretty good shape I'm just gonna have to make myself drink a lot of fluids today because it's hot gonna have to sweat a lot in the cars and hopefully be around the end and as we talk to Joe Nemechek we see John Andretti has just arrived at the Speedway he's just climbed off the helicopter you're familiar with the story and ready with top ten qualifying spots at Indianapolis in here he finished 10th at Indianapolis today he's going to try to back it up with a run to victory here in the coca-cola 600 in the Billy Hagen Chevrolet the 14 car and ready with a top ten qualifying effort here there's some question about whether he'll keep that spot because he missed the drivers meeting and NASCAR has a rule if you missed that drivers meeting you start at the rear of the field so we'll find out a little more about that whether they waive that rule for John Andretti or not now we talked earlier about NASCAR's I'd hate to call him the old guard but the older guard more the veterans the defending and six-time Winston Cup champion is bidding for two victories make it three victories in a row here at the coca-cola 600 we're talking about no one else but the Intimidator Dale Earnhardt and we're our third member of our over the wall gang today a driver who's leading the Busch grand national point standings we're glad to have Kenny Wallace back today and he's talking to Dale Earnhardt Kenny you guys I'm with Dale Earnhardt Dale you've won this cooked three hundred six times you were the first night winner got some young guys starting front I wish I could be here racing with you you think anything's gonna be different tonight then has been kidding you now racing goes that you can win all the races in the world and all of a sudden you can't do anything right so we're gonna see what we can do this is awful good racetrack for us our cars running good and you know being the winner last year is being the winner last year but you got to do it for 600 more miles and it's a tough race so you got a lot of you know tough competitors in it to your brothers and what up I'm really you know have good battles with but still there's gonna be a good show I think it's gonna be a good race today and tonight and may the best man win maybe he's driving a black number three thanks a lot day that's the most I've ever heard Dale Earnhardt talk is he gets strapped in here he's put some knee pads keeping his foot warm you're cold glad to see John Andretti making that is a story back to you guys one of the great stories in American racing in recent years John Andretti trying a heretofore thought impossible double Randy Pemberton is with John Andretti well John Andretti a tremendous flight down here very quickly he looks very composed very calm great run today John I know you gotta be do this real quick you're strapping in but a little bit of strategy tonight try and hang out there and do 600 miles and hope for a real good thing are you tired 500 miles was one thing but you know it's gonna be a tough race here good luck John John Andretti going from the nine hole supposedly today we'll see if he's gonna get to start there or not one of the great stories here today here to call the action for us today - gentlemen who've seen more of these races take the green than I think the rest of us combined our own Ken Squier and the King Richard Petty yeah but he always had the better seat well I had a interesting seat anyway that's a shooter 82 degrees he meant to me about 37% that temperatures come down about six or seven degrees cloud cover in and out looks like a perfect time for a race no possibility of rain they are saying Richard now what about this fluctuation between starting and daytime than running - that was one thing that we didn't get the rain the South the other night we didn't get any night running with these cars we always run them a lot of them last week we didn't get any night run nobody knows really what they expect you know most the time the car is tighten up as it gets cooler but you don't know you know how tighter we're gonna start with the car you know how loose we're gonna start with it's gonna be interesting Sterling Marlin has said that running a hundred eighty miles an hour and recalled at that front roll front three or 180 mile an hour karts on this mile and a half is a little like flying a jet airplane inside of an auditorium Richard I don't know I've never done 180 miles and here's the but I've been to some of them that was the same thing and so like running Bristol you know writing that that's what this racetracks getting run is it a handful it it is for that long you know you go out and run three or four laps you don't think anything about it but then you say man we got to be out here four and a half hours doing this kind of stuff you know 170 18 Mile liar then it's kind of tiring for by the time and richard has been the one to say over and over again it's never the speed that gets you it's that sudden stop that's the whole deal but you know that here again at speeds irrelevant it's the time that it takes us to get around the racetrack in so if you set out and run you know the longest build of the sort is dealing the time then that's you can be the winner well right now the US Marine Corps band is below us getting set for the anthem and before that perhaps no name is more synonymous with this event than Darrell Waltrip well of course it's a it's a very important holiday for for the whole country particularly those of us here today that are going out and compete against each other try to pull off a victory for for everybody watching not only here in this country but all across the world really this telecast is going everywhere a little closer to home though I think about all the men and women that have given their lives defending this country and the wars we've been in a little personal note for me I think about the competitors that have lost their lives over the last year or so that's real dear to our heart and all everybody here this weekend but by the same token also think about the most important thing and that's that I thank God that I'm an American and I thank God that I live in this country our fathers carried guns before us and now we the sons and daughters serve our country and bear arms not to create havoc but to prevent anarchy and its attendant destruction today we honor those who have been willing to risk life for liberty and fortune for freedom may they always outnumber the well-meaning who question everything and stand for nothing in your name we pray [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] ladies and gentlemen would you please remain standing at this time our national anthem performed by the United States Marine Corps band New Orleans of the marine reserve forces [Music] [Applause] done coca-cola 600 on TBS is brought to you by Dallas otter Speedway honoring remembering those who paid the ultimate price for this nation and with the beautiful plane of the national anthem by the US Marine Corps band out of New Orleans Louisiana we get set and get ready to put this show under green for 600 miles on TBS want to show you the MasterCard race analysis 1.3 million dollars up today for the 43 drivers will do battle will go 400 laps which is 600 miles on this mile and a half super speedway race record one hundred and forty five point five miles an hour Dale Earnhardt said that last year he'll have to go 55 miles an hour today on pit road though NASCAR will have the radar guns out and they'll sit anyone down who doesn't make it we'll be back to take you up to the green flag on TBS in just a moment 400 laps the distance 600 miles for a million to 43 cars and then ready because he missed the drivers meeting goes shot he knows you're now riding with three of our onboard cameras we have several more for you today Jeff Gordon the pole up there down the back straightaway [Music] you're with Mark Martin now and Jeff would I'm Jeff would I'm were ready for a ramble this afternoon to try to get himself another victory he won the Winston select the other night [Music] we're starting we think about taking a little easier this works part of this race on Richard yeah you got a figure there's gonna be three or four races good night no starting out right now it's it's kind of moon and then it'll get started getting cooler and everybody's got at Jess everybody figure on that out of here the 24 degree Bank like please lay up right now before we all take a moment like high gear out there well you get that before you get the postponement you look ready to go we'll get [Music] go in ties to the vote yourself boudin scoops down the inside tries to find the hole Nemechek up on the outside and you're riding with Bodine as they come by for the first time but you got a handful and those bumps up in turn four take a another look at that when they go back up through there this next time bottom and immature on the outside and state there one wheel the wheel so this is what's gonna be interesting because he's got on the Hoosier tires and and he got on Hoosier too personal boots sides in right now three wide in the second lap it's Bodine down to the inside via check fading back a little Court and taking a big fade back to port coming off those bumps and it is Jeff what I named worse Nemechek in second bumper camera from Jeff bodean looking back at number 41 Neiman 24 degree banking here because brother up in there see what's going on another bow down bottom of the racetrack number 26 goes in the second spot mass now getting underneath Jeff Gordon in the one it's Jeff bodean in front while the bye-bye [Music] greater continues to roll up through this field meanwhile look at Mark Martin make his move roof cam on mark Martin's number six going down the back straightaway [Music] or you can see them get that rip is pretty rough coming off report especially if you have to move up a little bit and that's the way they don't have in the middle of in fact the barrel [Music] it's still racing the whole righto back in the back well they've got settle down yet still you know for violating they're getting away and it's about a half second back there goes Brett hood I'm the Kenny Bernstein card on the bottom to put the quaker state colors in front of the next sidecar on the outside the bow dimes wheeled a wheel out of for 175 80 miles an hour to the strike bored with Mark Martin that the shot as he goes for second place black partner hugging the bottom of the racetrack looking for that hole for second and that comes Jeff Gordon just twenty two years of age and what a racer he is Martin coming up for a second I guess nobody told these people this was a 600-mile right I don't yeah I think they did I think they forgot at the time they got to the race car isn't ready yet that's what's good about the Winston Cup racing no matter Paul Reis or Trey's dick they going race to brett bodine out in front has a 10 car length advantage for the moment as they're too wide behind him and this will give him a chance to break away a bit more the second race that Brett Bodine has led this year and I'm in second gear smart and Rick mast making over the outside [Applause] ride 750 right there with him he 1/8 break sacks up in there look at Joe Nemechek set a new overall record out here I wasted awesome [Music] back two weeks you know he doesn't run low he just runs from the middle of the racetrack but he's got a good room he can he can run good consistent laps that way so it's the bull dying brothers wanted to with Rick our number one you gather here and get some good finishes of recent it's beginning to pay off on board insects he's got a good running start sad let him go now to the six fire and Ward Burton coming up from seventh to change however behind him Ernie Irvan is rolling he's into 8 Ricky Rudd [Music] 77 car money laps are complete whoo running first and second out here I'm Rick mast and Jeff were tied at the present time all camera onboard the Valvoline car Mark Martin in third record on his fourth Jeff Gordon fifth Nemechek six Ward Burton stage seven let's go back up with the leaders here take a look at Rick mast he is just scooting away at the present time get the how about two seconds yeah these things I'm Ivan smart he's running a little over 32 seconds so that's a good that's a good pace it's bill keep that up you'll be in good shape you run down on the complete field as we get to 20 laps this is how they're running all the way back through apple run down 35th stanford's 34th Eliott and dead last on it feel right now going to lap down Carthon seems to be having any problem at all mechanically out here he is well off the basement here it looks like everybody else is sort of keep it up in a bun I got about a half a lap lead on the last place man rather what we're getting is that they're saying there's a push on that Ernie Irvan number 28 [Music] the Robert Yates car in seventh position can see it fade up the track of it dick Berggren may be able to give us more on the story as we get going here some of the cars out here competing in this 650 the crew teams having a push at this point in the show is a very bad idea most of the teams this race with the cars loose at the beginning we go to night the cars tend to want to push more as there are more laps on this racetrack they tend to want to push more so most teams are starting loose and hoping that the night and the track will come to them this is not a good time to have a push the only one that has a good push a trick mass he's pushing the button and that car is working just flawlessly mass first and there's another car cuts wire that's working fantastically well - it's the number two of Rusty Wallace Wallace started back in 21st spot he's up to tenth after 20 laps now we've talked about John Andretti and his bid to run in two races today how'd you like to be Roger Penske who's jetting his way to Charlotte right now in fact they have already landed - he's already won the Indy 500 today and I'll tell you Rusty Wallace to me looks like a driver who may well win the 600 here this afternoon who surprised about that car here he is starting the 21st out here today [Music] working his way right through the field take a look at this as the front row cars are back out of this time with Nemechek than the 41 on the bottom fighting with Jeff Gordon that's 4/4 you know checks gonna take it from oh yeah he finally got it right in the DuPont so he tries to close back in on me you get a sense that back straightaway isn't quite as smooth as it looks from my it's not smooth at all about two-thirds of the way down it really gets rough but you get the car under control before you get to the corner so you okay Nemechek in Gordon six seconds down check out that time and rich mass continues to check out on the field Nast who started in seven leading and brawling away as the president let's take a look a little further back in the pack and see what's going on they have a heck of a race back here they've been racing from the word go and getting out a little bit but they're busy raising so but you know again I figured they would have done sort of fell in line and kept going but the difference here is like you say you started the car a little loose and it started pushing then first thing into a car you've been out running it starts out that it it was over - until it gets dark and then they'll pretty well settle down with as they ramble in the back straightaway through the three and four turn this has dick trickles number thirty-two looking you see the 1900 Allen jr. the Hooters car the Raleigh North Carolina even in his best meanwhile mass stays in front and continues to build on this lead what are the disadvantages of erase this long grip when I first started Winston Cup the pitfall was learning how to be able be aggressive the last hundred mile this is long approaches we run so you've got to be able to be there the last hundred miles but the car intact and driving [Music] the interval is about three seconds first second now the Rick mast wants to run away and hide but in 609 well you know it it's a look like the Indy race that's way it was all day long you know this is still a long long way you've got these cars back here that once they make a pit stop and a bunch of these cars that you know not really that good they make that adjust but they don't come up and they can start challenging so that's what makes it new is the average speed staying about a hundred sixty-eight miles an hour 160 seven a year in the [Music] real record right then settled all the cars would settle down and this is about as good as they could run with what they've got let's go to Kenny Wallace thank you Ken one thing I'd like to add is this racetrack was built on a dump what Richard Petty was alluding you can see Kyle Petty Rusty Wallace on the bottom if that really doesn't mean [Music] sometimes there's just not a preferred lane on this racetrack so this is some really good racin and that the weather really dictates a lot of these wrong well I think you'll see some of these cars that are running a little bit higher once they get adjusted it starts cooling off they'll try to come back and start running the bottom of the racetrack because if you can make your car run there that's the quickest way around me 31 laps complete gee that means just 369 percent before okay hang on here's Mark Martin the man he's trying to chase down Joey third spot it's Jeff bodean second over three seconds by which he we going further back look at Schrader going with Bo die 13th spot good war out there at the present time Derek colt gets into the middle of it Randy well we've gone about 1:32 left we about halfway for a fuel stop how we talked a lot about tires who's your Goodyear how far will they go how fast where they drop off they both camps expect to be able to go a full fuel stop that'll be about 62 to 68 laps we'll just have to keep the stopwatch on them to see who has the best tire and how will it fall off right now Hoosier is looking pretty good indeed they are as they hold the board fort 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th mask bow dine Martin in that Goodyear car he's the one to break them up I got the Charlotte Motor Speedway the coca-cola 600 live on TBS Elvis Memorial Day weekend great to have you with us today a beautiful day for racing very early in the going here and so far Rick mast has really done a terrific job started seventh he's gone to the front and he has set sail at the moment now all the 200,000 folks were here today had to make their travel plans to come to Charlotte many of the bid those who live outside the Charlotte Metroplex anyway if you're going to travel to a Winston Cup race this year here's how to get the information to me the official directory of NASCAR the Winston Cup Series from BellSouth advertising we're going to show you that phone number on the stream well we came to you from rich within March we had such a great response to this BellSouth didn't have enough operators standing by to take your order for 2495 plus shipping and handling they've got that rectified you can call the 1-800 number that we put up their 1-800 three four five race anytime 24 hours a day they'll be glad to take your order if you are coming to Charlotte preps for the fall race pages and pages and pages of information on that sent on the area around the Charlotte Motor Speedway here so we want to advise you to get your orders in quickly for the BellSouth directory the official guide to NASCAR and Winston Cup racing meantime on the racetrack right now we had talked about how Dale Earnhardt was coming up through the pack rapidly early on he's developed some problems dr. dick Bertrand is standing by and her heart's been well the problem is that the wanted it to do they had anticipated thought ernhardt could hang on to it that's not what's happened the car has a push in Earnhardt is fighting a push crew chief car owner Richard Childress says he doesn't know why is pushing he racetrack seems to be behaving and everybody anticipated also having a problems with 24 Jeff Gordon his car is also pushing his radio today [Music] we'll fix it for you while Earnhardt is 17 seconds back now and in position from the leader Rick mast [Music] [Music] 12th position yeah you know it's funny you do all the practice and all the tests and all this kind of stuff you turn them all loose get a different aliments that's what they're having to settle down with now but they can all have a quick pit stop here before long the demo racing over see if I can well there you see the Gordon car as it tries to do something to get itself back up in here but it's going to take a pit stop and we're at lap 42 when should they be coming in rich somewhere around the 60 laps Elevens couple to early to begin with or to see what's going on and you know make their adjustments as early as they can take a look here John Andretti about to get lapped by Bodine but Andretti on his own has been trying to get himself some distance out here get up through the field he's been fighting for some time with car number 32 Dick Trickle and now that one has broken up you see Randy Lajoie just in front of him he moved up about six positions then he's fallen back again great one for Grissom he's come from 28 to 6 we'll tell you more about that john andretti good roll IndyCars what's next I still like to drive a Formula One car sometime and who knows there's there's always something out there that really interests me then but they got and drive any motorcycles although I wouldn't win mine driving a hydroplane boat up on that hydroplane boat idea really yeah I don't think I won't know that either nasta slap Bill Elliott now [Music] further back in the field you see Nemechek also put in the laughs there's trickle in the 32 and finally getting around him booze and ready at 32 14 scramble has been going on for about ten laps getting some help from Nemechek for the moment dodged out there in front jet action from the backside [Music] but those leaders and here comes Randy Lajoie in the twenty back into the building there we're getting on up in downtown starting to lap some of these could pretty good running cars that when they get to jest and they will [Music] you really got him scattered out all over the racetrack right here had a tremendous race here yesterday that Phil Parsons navel those great sack the the needle in car number 77 and USAir car straight games that thing you've got a real gray on there to file a flight plan here at Charlotte [Music] [Music] take a look at this that's number 29 he has come a long way in a very short distance Grissom from 28 now fifth card number 29 on Hoosiers big jump in really really state he's not racing anybody's got him a good a good steady pace right now and he has been coming all really picking them up 49 put in a lap on Strickland right now coming keep your eye on Grissom today back to the coca-cola 600 in a bomb daaad coca-cola's 600 on TBS is brought to you by Castrol GTX and by McDonald's [Music] promotional fees in consideration have been paid by Raybestos brakes the best in brakes and by DuPont the official finish of bhaskar and buy Exide for great starts every day replace your old battery with a powerful Exide battery available at Montgomery Ward stores Rusty Wallace making an early pit stop we're at lap 52 we just saw Sterling Marlin come in and when he did he overshot his pit there's the action taking place on car number 2 here's dick Berggren and one of the few cars out here can that's not experiencing important with more weight in the left rear they midnight by the way the car that this is the best part there eighteen point five seconds on car number two Wallace away making this early pit stop to make some adjustments yeah here comes the 43 you know I don't know I think he's lost his pee the hard work is going on here he lost the pinout know what happens to you you didn't 35-mile a 55-mile are down pit road it looks like you just lost you know we're pitting all the way down at the end so I think what they did they call for early pit stop because the car wasn't working real good and so they they say okay we'll get in as quick as we can make this adjustment try to get back here and make that time back they're easy to get lost down here well it's easy to get lost imagine that situation [Music] the pitstop you know if you run stay out there are too many laps and try to stretch it you're better off to stop early get you get your stuff together and then go back out then quick and you make a time better that way you see a lot of a lot of people are starting to stop Navin Oh because you got some kind of trouble eh to 33rd they've got some problems yeah he was running 30 seconds brought it in had that great run out of the sears point aboard all week you know I mean it's all real gift but notice he wasn't really running that good today but you know this year just sets you back that much brother make it stop and make the adjustment you don't make a quick adjust with the kids you just get that much further than working lap 55 if you're just joining us all apps have been under green so far Ernie Irvan coming in at this point is the Ernie's core has been pushing real bad see they'll probably make some major adjustments on this car for second interval between first and second as mass leads Bodine we'll keep a clock on number 28 Larry McReynolds new company Robert Gates ready to do some work on Ernie Irvan let's go trackside [Music] to replace the car that they lost in the Winston lash [Music] pit-stop so far a good pit stop they're gonna change four tires the process good stocking 17.9 real good stock the big story right now though is Schrader who came in 25 as he comes out pit road 26 come in they like to hit him so they had a heck of a deal that they got lucky and missed all that Mark Martin coming in greater went right by his pit he's circulating around to come in another time meanwhile Mark Martin on pit road this at lap 57 why number six running in seventh position as it left the track he's out in 1919 three Kenny Wallace down on pit road how to give you these pit stops I think this is a very critical point of the race very first pit stops of the night it's a long long race people like Rusty Wallace and a lot of these guys are fun like earn thank you Richard to agree with me when they make these fit stop the quicker pit stops a really close up track position I think you'll see somebody leading the race after around and very slowly as we watched Jeff Gordon make me his pit stop his Schrader trying to get this car Walden old crew was out of pit road trying to bring him down [Music] there it is and there's the problem they just barely nudge it in that crew trailed along with it for a couple of laps and Randy Pemberton is there oh you're right they're having a break in mrs. fit the first time came back in they decided to leave the car in gear the problem was they were sliding in which will rip Maspeth the leader of the race is now in Rick mast his best finish ever in this race has been 11th the Hoosier tires running absolutely beautifully so far Rick mast was telling them four tire stop they want to make sure they get all the gas in on this scroll car soap a beautiful table by the but what goes up I can waiting for great sacks a pit road unfortunate time for Schrader forty-three and then summons the clock continues to run as they try to get some blinders back on Schrader's car Joe Nemechek is in watch this stop lap 60 [Music] all the way around and then it takes been running a good steady pace also right now is the time to run a steady pace you don't need to really race with anybody this early in the you know if they can just set a pace and stay with it then they're gonna be in good shape here's darrell waltrip bringing 2:17 on he worked himself up to six spot lap 61 as he pits come from 17th position and here is Jeff would I making his entry to pit road remember that speed limit on pit road how do you feel about that speed limit yeah it's it's it's really okay under caution flags and stuff like it because you got everybody on there raise conditions I still think they ought to run wide open new meaning where they got control of the car I think that should be part of the race of course that you that you use that time degrees right now because if you happen to have to stop under green everybody gets a costume deal messed up completely so first I guess a bad first and second of the racetracks they came in well his pit stops mode inés out in nineteen one there you see Greg sacks in the 77 the Musgrave ride a year ago sacks pulling back onto the speed so wholesale change of positions will bring you up-to-date on now they're riding [Music] coca-cola 600 his naps complete Bill Elliott about the last of the field to make his pit stop Bodine is now back in command by four and eight ten seconds over Rick Nash in second place that is as they work lap 67 he's evolving green flag stops and that will sort out the field considerably here in the early going the third position is Joe Nemechek by the way coming up shortly we'll have an Auto week racing update [Music] on EMSA up at the Lime Rock Park this weekend so stay with us for that person little later we'll be updating the big story of the day at Indianapolis is that some kind of birthday present Mike Wallace it road and got one contending for the lead and for the moment a car number 90 which is the Junie Donnelly cars back in 39th position back [Music] right behind try the slices white [Music] rather a lap down we find Kenny Wallace and see how it is when of Thanksgiving at the dinner table I imagine they say do you remember what she doesn't be there up there the patties you know and you get together not really we've been into each other one prophet we forgive each other move it broader area would anybody else well there's Kyle making his move in car number 42 he tries to keep the Felix avetis car sign it out and he's Pontiacs rolling again back in 27th position on the latest rundown meanwhile it's car number 7 Bodine for the lead mastered second Nemechek in Byrd the photo has been learning that for a pretty good while it looks like he's going to try to get away from her get away from him good NAPA rundown on the entire field that says 67 laps on the track [Music] out there and sticking with it this afternoon did a great job yesterday backed up third spot just at the end in the eye [Music] a pretty restless night no one and you've got to do this again today that'd be pretty hard agency you'll be on that what it takes that you just have to say hey man somebody else can do it or I can do it if they can't do it that's the way they have to approach it good with good ones that's the way they do it 17 cars on the lead lap right now repairs on Schrader's car get those brakes fixed for five minutes 24 seconds in length so he lost what 11 laps let's go to Andy Pemberton in house obviously frustrated Ken you were one of the pre-race favourites to take the 600 what brake pedal win to the floor just for five laps before we're still trying to figure out what went wrong [Music] problem a lot of air in the system got the brakes now for today okay tough break that's got to be frustrating guys have they certainly had a good farm practice he was one of the top five that I had on the watch in practice yesterday 43rd position in all 43 cars is still we've completed 73 laps on the mile and a half 109 miles are down they're still averaging a hundred sixty-three miles the record for the fastest 600 go won it for the 2nd straight year he wanted an average speed of 145 point 5 there were seven cautions in that race last year thus far were caution free with the six of the race off camera but good way we've been trending at the policies and stuff they think the first 17 cars are in the same laughs it really separated today it fits coffee something like it you lose a half a car length or or half a straightaway then the people get a headache so now they're all settled down now to try to run it again Richard we have Hoosiers on cars that are running one two and three whose your tires on Jeff I've always been a little skittish when you get into a tire we're always thought that they don't that nature attire drives always the drivers in the car only yes for sure I didn't think about the tire on his bike they get that get her financier drivers get hurt physically so I guess about one Handy's [Music] and they had added a little excitement to it for a lot of race fans so far this year we've been really lucky I think maybe one set of tires were at one race with youth but they withdrew the tires so you know from that standpoint they they've done a lot better this time than they did the first time they came in back in the late 80s there's John Andretti who's now completed 600 miles of racing today with 500 still to go and one of the people that has been responsible to put together the program to get racetracks and so forth is one of the most respected promoters in America today dad of course had great Indianapolis cars Troy Ruttman one in a gazillion car and Kari agajanian standing by in the STP fit center right now with Rick Benjamin again it's a blur of privilege certainly to welcome Kerry agajanian to the broadcast but I want to show you something you think you've got a lot of frequent flyer miles maybe a lot of credit cards in your wallet I'd like to have a pair of these in 94 NASCAR Winston Cup credential and as you SEC annual credential with a speedway credential attached to it and the guy who owns both of these you're probably the only one in the garage area who's got that company should maybe besides Roger Penske well that's true actually John Andretti didn't need it because he had his drivers uniform no one questioned his credentials how was he feeling on the ride down here very well he did quite well on the way down he was relaxed he got out of the car he wasn't really tired at all we had a nurse there to check all his vital signs they gave him actually two liters of fluid just to make sure that he could he could go ahead here he had a good run at it he talked to it finished a terrific he was doing so well I thought this was going to be the year he was going to win it in the top three most of the first half of the race and then something happened in the handling of the car he the car got very loose he said he fought it the last half of the race and fought to keep in the top 10 but we were proud of them to get the top 10 well we're proud that you're here and that he made it this guy drove four big league racecars last year Indy cars Winston Cup MC gtp and a top fuel dragster the impossible double today being performed by John him Greta yeah thanks he just did a terrific job we flew down on a candidate the flight and they everything went perfectly good to have you with us AGGA Ginny and you know how you test out here in the race tach he was trust testing all the choppers in the air by now who thirty minutes exactly eleven hundred miles to get that rig down they golf carts of range I'll tell you I tell you what service heck of a job just to get him here I think he was probably more anxious getting here that was grunted either one of the races you're watching Jeff Lodi and continuing to lead here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in the 35th annual coke Joe Nemechek in second earlier [Music] at Charlotte Motor Speedway as the Sun Goes Down and the moon gets ready to come out I'll show you a Winston Cup racing is all about here in the 35th annual coca-cola 600 for the moment Geoff Bodine has the advantage averaging 163 miles an hour [Music] the finger hi fire this is Derrick Coleman he is slowing down I think he's going to come in right here I'm scheduler yeah he he slowed down a little back in the back spirits before you supposed to slow down absolutely pretty hard when they get to school firm slow down for the pit stop you got some kind of problem Fingerhut gave some race fan today five million dollars out here on the start/finish line Richard before the race Nick Garrett wishes he had a piece of that right now he probably broke with $2 and a half piece here on the car you know I think the guy's name was Karl [Music] there you see the situation with the cale yarborough team the Concord this change of virus why I had a flat tire Jericho pretty go back to war here now that's what happened it must if they had a flat tire so he's back in 22 seconds 22 seconds it stopped back for the leader Jeff food I'm at 163 point for you that's faster than he regains poll speed for this racetrack back in 1984 let's take a look back to second place that interval is about three seconds to the second-place car Joe Nemechek number 40 and there's your third place car Ernie Irvan closing up on Nemechek at this time guarantees run a steady race and he's just digging away a little bit of time but his car wasn't working real good to begin with he's probably pushing really bad but looks like I've made that pit stop that made some adjustments to it and he's getting through the corner pretty good man too surprised there as he puts a lap on Terry Labonte Ernie Irvan said Louie hold the car down man wall ago was watching he was going from there all the way the wall then getting a driven story picture they got it dialed in right now now we have four teams that are the dominating teams this year that is for sure an Ernie Irvan is one quarter with that explain why the same four teams have been dominating the series lately I would say it's kind of like having a baseball team with nine players and they're good but they're just not all-star players and that's where the big four teams I think the big players they have all of positions filled with top key people and the other teams are working towards that and they're going to start producing better and better so we're just all fortunate right now to really have key people in all the positions come down wrong got a got a spin and a crash up and turned number four and it's John Andretti in the 14 is he wheeled it around I missed that uh what happened I looked up he was in the vault following the leaders that were down here and turned to and up and turned for John Andretti had a skirmish with the concrete that's beaten in the front end and he's right front that looks serious yeah he's kind of used up right now even though they'll probably beat it out get it going he's not he's through racing he might have been a few laughs John Andretti real try here in Winston Cup racing this year 10th that ending today it's going to be far further back in this event he was running in 39th when he got in trouble up here in the fourth third he was the same before the race that his dad Aldo Andretti pretty good sprint car driver in his day and Mario's twin brother John said my dad is still warming up to the idea of me racing anything with fenders are told Tom starring like that so you got nothing hit open wheel cars you know I guess I can say you know you needed some thinners way they make a little bit of Coucy Wow that wall comes up so quick and for doesn't you do that a couple of yeah up here let's take a look at what happened to John Wesley I hate just yeah he just lost the back end of the thing we took the air off of the back off the spoiler right there and he's probably pretty lose anyway but the to card it didn't look like it caused nothing except taking her off the car leaders are on pit road there all three of them bowed I'm 41 op Nemechek in the 28 of Ernie Irvan all in in the first caution period of the race it comes at lap 90 years dick Berggren Jeff Bodine is it he's gonna take on four tires this is a very experienced crew all of these people except the gas man who is now Peter [Music] last year when Jeff bodean bought the team foot pins dr. average Jeff bodean right behind him is the 41 of Nemechek also a good pinch stop 19 - was that first pit stop on Bodine do work on the 14 car of John Andretti get him back out this is under caution not quite the pressure there's been a little bit of a breather out here you treat this as a breather Richard well I think he's a deal to settle down okay they've had a chance to settle down in the race they've run a full pit stop under green I made a pit stop under green and about a half another pit stop and they need to settle down and this will get everybody settle down so John Andretti is going to get back on the track with the car certainly isn't the same as it was before a tag the fourth turn wall the end the coca-cola 600 if John had said anything well prior to the first pit stop he made he said absolutely nothing now he did have a little right side damage as well as left front damage they're gonna put a string on both tires running it from the left front to the left rear right front to the right rear trying to match the toe out he did come over the radio just recently and said the car is now wandering so as far as the cause of the crash we do not have that at this particular time but of course he has gone 1,100 miles Kenny Wallace could Petite be playing a problem here Benny brand I really don't think so I wanted to make a comment I read an article where John said if he would happen to get in trouble in the 600 would probably be blamed on his you know possible fatigue this is a great race car driver he had everything in place all the transportation I think you know I watched turn three and four all day long it's got really slippery there's a lot of bumps over there it just come up from out them up them underneath them but I think we need to remember that he's a good race car driver and I don't think this can be blamed on all the traveling at from Indian Indy to here Kenny I know you're there with a monitor as well let's take a look at this replay Kenny's been running up and down the pit road passing along Richards feeling Kenny was that the two cars just took the air off the back of that thing what do you think I think you're exactly right you know what has happened we watched Indy 500 earlier today and you seen what happened ever since any more days you know that this time and day we're going so fast aerodynamics means so much rusty just got up from underneath them took their off of this ball and what do we mean by that is that you know usually there's no car behind you the air comes around the rear we call the c-pillars puts downforce on rusty come up behind him and you know it's just a race in accidents unfortunate had to be John Andretti the indeed [Music] I was up for not about your riding with the derrike cope think they're very good Ron they made a early pissed off he must undoubtely had a tire going down [Music] here is look at Jeff bodean and here's end reading back on pit road another time as they administer to the right side of the car looks to be more than cosmetic you saw him in the bike the tire was kinked and now they got the string out they're trying to get some kind of a geometry in there that makes it a little stronger for him and not make it quite so loose well Richard you were talking about that early stop for Derrick Colt that was for a tire that believe it or not blistered it's the first blister tire we've seen here on pit road I don't think we've got a tire problem because that's the only one we've seen so far that one or a really bright rare Richard okay getting seven a restart I'm first Nemechek Zak Irvin Wallace for mass with Mark Martin 6 followed by Steve Grissom Jeff Gordon back in ninth is Earnhardt Greg sacks 10 [Music] eleven Perry gaps as well sterling and then Ricky darrell waltrip of laughs the cars in the lead as they take green on lap number 96 104 [Music] under fashion six laps in that caution period then always to do again everybody's in government and double Griest and all that kind have to get back in line again Mark Martin running sixth position closing on Rickman's about resurfacing this tract as early as this summer as much do you think it's going back it's gonna be fantastic the speeds that either almost winning this thing wide open [Music] we bit more grreat in the racetrack here probably [Music] lap leaders thus far in the event there [Music] there's a Nemechek done well the areas in second spot comes right back again he's just been regular nice and they got it misstep in laughter wanted restore Scottie behind but that's at that time he was and then all of his practice and all his qualifying and everything has just been just a real regular run and that's what he's doing today Daryll is going to have [Music] seem pretty confident that the cars now left find a way to sort itself out and get it you notice some of this kind of stuff here at the dais apart a lot of responsibility because they wouldn't have a really good right to begin with or the way they made their pit stops maybe they're good stop one quite as smooth as somebody else's so they wind up getting a lot of against theirs what 15 16 laps stealing or 15 or 16 bars Jeff Gordon seems to have found to whatever was ailing 24 in the early going he's trying to sort him out from some lap cars [Music] take a look at [Music] you may feel what a story he is Jeremy may feel the old two car Jeremy Mayfield out of Nashville Tennessee getting up in the top ten everyone approaches the Charlotte race to have Jeremy Mayfield I'll qualify so many others hats off to that number Oh to Jeremy Mayfield take a look at this and there is Waltrip a lap down Gordon scoots to the inside the 24 brings Terry Labonte and Earnhardt with it that Earnhardt is in eighth car in between is a lap down [Applause] [Music] you think Gordon is really an actual yeah he's an engine to be able to do what he's done and then all the different kind of cars he's just a natural natural race for governor all they need years experience [Music] givanni lap down and here comes ernhardt trying to work his way back up let's go back to the front of the field for a moment the 28 car just passed the lap before just just passed the 41 boys [Music] you can bet that he sees him in the mirror Earnhardt Wallace Martin and Ernie they call them the big four and Ernie Irvan number 28 is moving in on Jeff bodean for the league this set lap 104 tell you PO dine with those whose your tires and seems to fade up the track gets about another 8 feet up the hole is there but the sunlight out there I don't think muscle the car down on the inside King Richard the 28 car stand down there real good you know to begin with he was he was going up and losing all the time in the car but right now he's trying to catch up and the seven cars got the grooves so he's overeating first and second at war Andretti is back on pit row John Andretti brings number 14 back in another time meanwhile Nemechek in third Rusty Wallace now in fourth [Music] right down there in the low seats you got it you're a real fan that's where you go low seats you want to see it all you got to be up to be part of the show you get down there and want to get all the dirt you pay yeah the whole run those old dirt tracks [Music] your glasses on that about all they could see if that's good he's running at him [Music] he goes [Music] gym room stays up that lengthy usually stays down to love out there then fades not this time Bernie urban slices sue for the inside looking for his fourth win of the season riding with Jeff but I on the upside batteries car and he's coming right back after it on the inside it'll be Ernie Irvan leading that lap by about six inches of 11 races this year but boudin isn't ready to give it up he's down on the bottom and he wants it back and as those two runs side by side Nemechek and the Meineke car comes back into it Wallace closes up and forth and number two Martin's right there all moving up about a 6-quart raised right now just because they've been side-to-side for laughter to see john andretti back on the track running in the board have receipt sold here in dollars shootout of the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the moment Ernie Irvan lot of new names and a lot of good names out here Richard like Nemechek getting into this thing seeing Gordon come out here certain gifts from South Boston someday we've got a lot of new rookies coming along right now really have so we've completed 109 lat one caution so the moment stay with us watching the battle for 13th position in Terry Gannon 2 33 and the Daytona 500 winner sterling marlin and a lot of smoke has been coming out of 33 even so he passed the number four let's see if we can go to the pits and get more on this story hence why I'm working my way down to the hairy campus but just before that last caution I did get some information that Harry Gant said he did not think there was a problem with an oil leak but he did know that he was his car was smokey coming off of turn four we might have to ask Richard Petty whether he thinks that it's a tire smoke or oil smoking out [Music] I'm gonna check it out here and see I think attention to that deal take a look see right there that's not tire smoke Betty that's all smoke so yeah bring up the rear end [Music] some kind of oil leak is getting on the eggs or something number 82 and he won the 500 here run that was Taylorsville North Carolina and the Bandit in his last performance for Leo Jack's from a 600 last race in Charlotte will be in October back up front here serving in first jebediah eject there and forth just coming into the picture Jeff what I didn't want to let go any more than he did the other night thought that was interesting that he spun that car out in the Winston and was able to bring it back he just got really really lucky when they hit him from behind those flats Dante anyhow in the in the deal the plats got it stand up and cheer and once again [Music] 20h then used his tires up or what happened bowtie on Hoosier Ernie Irvan [Music] [Applause] at fourth turn beat up the smaller your back pretty good [Music] that's not that bad so what allow for all that stuff I've been I've been watching earn here he's just sort of chipping away they've been up there racing her inside beside earn horses sitting our chip and all these will be right up there with him there you see the top two then you see Gordon and third Nemechek behind them comes Mark Martin Rusty Wallace and back in set is the card of the free that's not over you better stay right here for Justin the easier district behind ketchup because they're busy watching each other pay attention everybody so they're really slow each other down for they device moves in look inside a Jeff what I am working [Music] we saw the interval there and here comes Nemechek in this battle for third on the inside of Jeff Gordon [Music] remember that Gordon is good you're shot Nemechek on Hoosiers in this struggle right behind the mark Barton in fifth the village to the Jetport and talking to his crew [Music] laughs later you'll radio in and say now it's loose I don't understand this then they were radio it and say it started pushing again well let me fantastic Hualapai runny [Music] dynamic balance the front suspension the shocks and Rusty Wallace has just backed them again he has just launched g-spot all the changes they made their current before this 600 Milan Rusty Wallace has just made another change he has pulled himself up in the fifth Jeff Gordon deployed back in six and Joe Nemechek has moved around Mark Martin so Nemechek goes to third Mark Martin falls to fourth were at 122 laps 183 miles into this I'll tell you another thing it hasn't changed 43 cars started Richard and 184 miles this time by all 43 you're still running that's something that's unavailable that really is really a Rusty Wallace who's Penske team have a never-say-die attitude you talking about duro for Lagoo competition you get so much tougher now just about time you got [Music] [Applause] [Music] new teams but I told the guys if they keep telling what never gets it easier I said it's never gonna get and it's gonna get so hard if you just we have to make a decision whether you want to be you get that tough and it's certainly true but showing itself forty-three runners still on the field [Music] get up toward 200 miles complete most cars we ever had running at the finish rain-shortened race in 19 we had 31 and 86 [Music] in the coca-cola 600 report this one is over look coca-cola's 600 on TV we are back with you going for a hundred and eighty-five with lake speed in the bud more for this afternoon Motor Speedway two good things up today he started toward the back but he is currently 14th of the show Charlotte Motor Speedway today for almost one third of the way home in the coca-cola 600 today live on CBS one of the stories were following this event is huge in many ways biggest race of the summer season really in the Winston Cup season and let's correct what we said Lake speed is 31st in the field I'm told at the moment in any case there's a million dollars posted by Winston the Winston select million this year it's only been one one time in Winston Cup history Bill Elliott back in 1985 at this running there are two drivers still eligible for the million dollars Sterling Marlin who won the Daytona 500 Dale Earnhardt won the race at Talladega the Select 500 a while back and we understand at the moment here's where they're running Earnhardt has advanced to 6 while Sterling Marlin has dropped back to 14th spot so Earnhardt certainly in good shape he's the two-time defending champion here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway huge interest in this because it is the biggest check in the sport if one driver can win three of the four select races Daytona the first Talladega race here the coke 600 and that Darlington Labor Day so Earnhardt wins today he'll be in line all he'll need to do is wear the southern 500 come Labor Day at Darlington we'll keep you posted on the progress made by both Sterling Marlin in the 4 and Dale Earnhardt of the 3 all evening here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway we're back at lap 130 that's 195 miles only one caution and the first 200 miles that's the way it may be before we get this one free that's 600 and we have Earnhardt and mast in the battle for sixth position free car on the outside and the one and learn arts doing course been digging are with him but they've been racing all day you know they still at it there's a twenty nine quarter I didn't I would risk some ain't there some years I might let him get Darrell's been a good girl place to sleep or Mulligan he's a lap down but he's gonna get yeah Walt Waltrip is 16 one lap down on Hoosiers I was surprised that Waltrip of all people switched from Goodyear to Hoosier I think everybody was the girl girls in a situation where he's Carlin or driver and he knew that he's got to do just as good as you sponsor so he said okay I'll play the middle of the road which everyone I think's the best and you know a lot of times that's probably better for crazy raised [Music] all year long do we felt like a few years will be the best mask look at Rick mast work on the outside of the one four six spot take it away from Earnhardt I got to say those Hoosiers are hanging up on the outside and really working another working anywhere because that may be a different word we got a man leading the race is run in the middle one second was running down bellowing both go Pike of the same kind of town 133 laps now complete Nichola 600 [Music] accident-free except for one little skirmish up here when Andretti's car John Andretti skidded up into the fourth turn at the wind at the air taken off the back of his car by car number two Rusty Wallace he brushed the wall bend it up a little but he's right back out here racing 43 still competing through two to see one car on pit road [Music] after an art eighth place car these is down into the pits to sit laughs 134 that's a little yeah that's a little bit earlier what do they say in some kind of trouble there but you got to see remember they were a couple three cars started passing him so maybe his core quit working he decides we had to stop might get adjustments right there that's just what's going on with the Richard Childress team first time ernhardt came to this race he's only a run 43 laps since his last pit stop first-timer and Earnhardt came here when the race was all over that [Music] named richard childress my ball is hot Childress figured you know if you can't beat them join them I guess my what a great joining what they do they say here and you watch these cars and so I pick foods they sit there and they say okay you know we can run 33 seconds or whatever you get around the racetrack and all of a sudden you've been 32 10 or 33 20 they say hey let's get in here and get that empower so we get back out there in 32 second lap so that might be what they do it right here so Earnhardt trying to be when this race three time a little problem here let's see how he'll deal with it in the Cole the 600 promotional fees in consideration that could pay five Fingerhut with values direct to you by Ford quality care service at your Ford and lincoln-mercury dealer where the quality continues and by highly buyers furniture company we furnish America were highly buyers [Music] in the coca-cola 600 you're watching Jeff bodean in first Joe Nemechek in second pitstops have begun we just saw Wally Dallenbach world the number 43 down pit road and Billy stand bridge was in report dick Berggren as to that pit stop by Dale Earnhardt [Music] on the right front blistered that is the second Goodyear blister we have here's our coke now one a right front for Earnhardt Kenny Wallace has an update for us me and field he's down there on top of the holler somewhere what's happening right now is I'm checking out turns three and four and I can't see one and two but behind you guys the sun's starting to go down I'm concerned about that blister because there's Richard Petty knows as a racecar driver the sun's starting to go down they're going to go faster they're going to enter [Music] guys going to turn three two and three wide but they're not to be an accident this deep into the race pretty thanks daddy all right from the top of Musgrave struck for he's getting that observation now what about this as the Sun Goes Down I know it's been a while but you've run 32 races you run day and night what's the circumstance going to be here the deal the deal is he's right what happened as Sun Goes Down the track gets quicker and the cars get tighter and if we're using up it was driving on roads right now they could they should probably play Randy Lajoie out of Norwalk Connecticut is just pitted but it's been so flawless for everybody I just can't imagine I can't think when you've gone with the entire field this deep into a race well you know when they first started that's it man this is going to be something else well they've been side by side they're riding with race in sideways and that the tires are working the cars are working it jumping around another mantis will be given room so forth nobody's really crowded anybody as long as they don't crowd anybody then will be and they get to really racing they might start crab me to go Dyna Nemechek stay up in price right now Mark Martin is on pit road at the seventh place machine some of these cars have stopped early like you say they probably started feeling they was having tire problems [Music] you're not careful if it's run the whole raised under green that somebody's gonna have to make extra pit stops over some of the other people so yeah that's gonna be interesting isn't it incredible you think about it change those tires faster than put that fewer than a yeah that really gets something [Music] and four tires and [Music] 20 to 5 when that pitstop and I see a car going back to the garage area I think our first retiree number forty-seven as you see Sterling Marlin sliding and Vili Stan bridge has gone back to the garage we may have our first retiree from the event it's idling back six eight miles an hour four-tire change taking place here on the kodak car number four but aids can elaborate and the aggression you know they've been around it he's done got affirmed Rick manses got diced good front standees have bowed I'm first Nemechek second and Grissom has just moved up has four who's retired cars they're old right now starting to dominate that part of Bobby Hamilton has just pitted in car number 40 see the 90 Mike Wallace has come in in the highlig Myers car Oh dine first even check second now look at this - and 28 are at it that's for fifth Waltrip running a lap down just behind them Bodine first Nemechek second person with his third fourth and years Wallace [Music] take bit and puts Gant - seven [Music] I doubt they're going whatever like flag on in a while whatever was smoking while ago must not have got any words cuz he's still out there day long and he's taken up chilly well guys there's been a lot in the media about the big four the big four which the Cup competition this year yeah [Music] yes we know we have to arrive in the wall one is bow dine and the other Bobby Labonte car the Maxwell House bar okay now some of these boys are gonna get some free pit stops and waltrip right down the pit road taking avoidance yeah let's do it Strickland right in are benign some of these cars are stopping some up happens so that's going to be free pit stop to the ones that haven't stopped off so for bobby labonte of Corpus Christi Texas at Maxwell House car and look at 26 any Bernstein's teams on the 22s gone right back behind the wall they'll start working on it back there maybe try to resurrect something - that looks savage this paternal Earnhardt behind a lap even though he was been running 1567 he's a lap down because he stomped another five or six people happy we'll have a replay on this incident in turn four that is the second caution period of the day six lead changes among five drivers so far in the 601 52 Gant was on pit road Earnhardt will have lost a lap here to put him back in 17th position and let's take a look again at what happened to Brett Bodine here they come around here and the 22 is getting ready to make a pit stop and a 26 hit seam that didn't see him talk cimoli and knocks him on in the pit but that's what happened 22 was stopping in the 26 just run up on him so quick [Music] just not paying attention to really what was now if you want to see it from trackside take a look at this I don't want to see it Jackson yeah that but you showed it better right there you can see that the Bobby had slowed down and I just wind up running right in the back of him well that's the end of the day for the Quaker State Bar [Music] Bede to back out and get him yeah they drove it they drove that one in but on the hook is the 26 and the field now on pit road so Bernard would that early stop now finds himself jammed up a lap down he's got to do it you yeah you have to make it three in a row here Darryl boatman hood Goodspeed Gerald they've got his lap down because of the pit stops from stuff they had before so now you got two real good running cars that's a lap down that shouldn't be but circumstances done caught up with Kenny Wallace down there has been getting the story on this incident Kenny what's up okay I just talked to Bobby Labonte you know it's one of these Speedway pit stops like Richard said you know you're trying to get around the bottom of the racetrack that's the groove that's where you want to run Bobby holds his hands up says he's coming down pit road 26 car doesn't see them this is what happens right here it's a bad story Bobby Labonte had a good run some have anything to do with that it could have really could have because the Sun is right over the number four I can't see beer but yeah I could remember the Sun being real bad you're in it you've got a dirty windshield everybody's getting ready to stop you got the grease on it and like you say all you got to do is just take your eyes off of it Richard take a look at turn four there's the Sun from the outside you can't really see it from here but what happened everything flex off of everything you come around and it's like and then when you go into that darker it's just like somebody puts her hands in front of you guys so it's really really hard to be able to see it that was probably what made some of it anyway that's for sure see the activity here on car number 22 and indeed they are going to try to get him back in and here's Harry Gant on pit road and we're working on this tree looking for that smoke that's been going all day that's sure looked like it was coming out of the tail end what happened leaks leaks on the headers up front I was a leak a valve kit casket or something yeah leaks on there and it goes all out under the car and the time he gets back there it's a lot bigger smoke than it is under the hood Randy well Joe Nemechek was in I I went over to talk to crew chief Doug Richard after the pit stop I asked that they changed anything on the car they said they changed a little bit of air pressure on a pit stop prior to that this time they changed absolutely nothing but four tires added a gas they dropped it and left it out Department has more on Jeff bodean well they're about as happy with their cars apparently Nemechek is with his they changed the air pressure in the right-side tires one pound that's kind of like sneezin in them other than that they put fuel and four tires on the car and they're often out of it retro dime it's a little bit more than sleeves no okay guys they're not doing it for the exercise you know they look at it change in the spring when they change temperature higher the pressure on the tire there they can change it 50 pounds or 100 pounds Blackfoot meant for spring when I say 100 pounds that's 100 pounds playing 900 pound on the tire whereas we're under caution at lap 155 of this crash that's eliminated the threat code I'm in his fifth 600 start9 650 Nm my truck has 99 thousand miles on it it's like a magnificent day in Charlotte North Carolina beautiful crowd every seat taken and there you see from the bestest aerial platform this mile and a half facility where they're riding the 35th annual coca-cola 600 where we're 156 laps into it and getting set to go racing once again 234 miles complete and as they line up it will be bowed I'm first Nemechek second urban third Wallis forthwith Maspeth Dale Jarrett six Gordon next then Steve Grissom eighth Ricky Rudd Greg sacks 10th Morgan Shepherd eleventh and Harry Gant in 12 all in the lead lap Martin goes a lap down Earnhardt 14 walseth 50 16:17 respectively to turn number one [Music] I'm scarred give me the shot back to a Joe Nemechek tried to close in on it Hoosiers running first and second and Goodyear tires on the cars and third and fourth and there's a story there let's go to Randy Pemberton tell us more about that well just prior to the pit stop as much as you hate it to be a tire race it sure does appear to be that Jeff would I Joe Nemechek Steve Grissom and Harry Kent we're all on Hoosiers the only was able to stay up there Rusty Wallace Mark Martin also made a bid on Goodyear tires but those were the big four that the Winston Cup circuit and also you have to throw in Greg Stanton on is it's been a lose your race got a wild race up here in front of you just saw me but check just shot it down in there what you think hey Manny Monaco 3 links up coming up down through there but then he goes on through most Azul family he was running so practiced when he got to the third corner it didn't make no difference back turning cover his eyes but you can see close the guts go into a corner but you did just then Nemechek in second wild man up there for the moment Rusty Wallace in the two-car lies fourth Bravo dines bumper cam looking back at the jack in second place [Music] how fast you think here underneath struggled for second as you look back from boat ah and going to the bottom taking the spot is Ernie Irvan and he brings with him Rusty Wallace Nemechek Falls to fourth he may fall to your mark Mark Martin born Mark Martin is there by side with him [Music] you snooze you lose don't it's time for a snooze ease out here Martin is there [Music] the SDP fits kenta pleased to welcome Brett Bodine to the STP fit center but not this early in the race we wish you have been able to come to the checkered flag he went right to the front early against these drivers your brother Ernie Irvan Rusty Wallace who stout out there well I think the seven the 41 they're awful tough on long runs the Hoosier cars have an advantage well looks that way but you know hopefully when it cools off the good years to come back Adam you're feeling okay yeah awful dejected I know I just [Music] often tree importance on the three I've seen him up ahead of me about 20 car lengths halfway through the corner the Sun hits you in the eye and you're kind of running blind for a second next thing I knew I was running tobacco Richard Petty who's on with us today theorized that might have happened that you might have windshields get dirty here pretty quick you know that Sun is brutal right now over there in the fourth turn of the cars running up front who might have something other than this lead group as we watch nine cars they get down into turn one Mark Martin looks awful strong well you know excessive tires seem to be different everybody seems to be running a different after they make a pit stop guys get a better match set she's gonna play out see at the end of the race it's tough to call right now conditions are going to change a lot before the check replace once it really cools well Brett Bodine thanks for coming out with us tonight thank you up in front bernie urban Rusty Wallace in a struggle [Music] running mash something's happened I think on the number one car it's backing up got collected at that LUP in front is now a good year battle between Wallace and Ervin [Music] Martin [Music] he wants to round the 28 in the to see if he can get him back at this moment there are wall cars in the lead lap Wallace Irvin bow dine Jared mass Nemechek six Gordon seventh Grissom eight rut and then Mark Martin that left on the racetrack or not with more partners than the third and Dylan horse running teeth on the racetrack in their lap down so they're trying to make their laps s Rusty Wallace for the moment in the lead in his favorite race car there's a really good shot that we can win the 600 so really is our Ford engines have been real real reliable and the cars been handle well I've got midnight my favorite car [Music] got other cars or just as good but this one's stuck in my head since I've had so much success to keep running it but we're in good shape and like it very easy to winter sex on the 1990 coca-cola 600 winner says it's going to be easy to wanted to get does one card he kind of favor one Apple you look back over all those 200 wins a couple of cars that you wish you hadn't caught up with yeah I think you wind up doing that and I think 67 and you know one always racist uh P we do I fell out of four races that the same with a brand new course we finally put that thing away and I think it is cars are like people they got personalities they do yes sir believe it or not they got personalities and you just get the liking something or liking a far away it feels older anyway it reacts basically what [Music] some guards at his done I car my wife says that it's the ugliest thing any time she gets near to decides not to run take a look at the Ricky rut going under a Rick mast here and let's go back and replay for a second Richard and look at what happened to mast here that had us all taking a deep breath he got up a little bit on the outside there before I got away from the movie they just all bet touch the wall and then the car behind him runs into him and all this this kind of takes your breath it takes you a little while then to get it all gathered back up I mean he did I didn't know well like this one everyone have their to the nemecheck s reason to check Sephora back and whoop got some parts and pieces out there we did have some parts and pieces out there caution is out it caught up with that they want to yellow out but he penetrated tyre off something like that so Wallis urban come across the line Mark Martin for the way up on that Rick masters in quickly so while they're dusting off the Speedway here Charlotte will pause for a commercial break and be back with boy now 170 laps complete in the coca-cola 600 you could win 1 million dollars by entering Pocono Raceway UAW GMT more clogs presents a NASCAR profile featuring Harry Gant as Winston Cup stock car racing fans we're spending the 1994 season saying goodbye to one of the sports all-time great drivers Harry GAD is riling off into the sunset but the memories of his spectacular career will never fade away Harry's made quite an impact on the sport since his first start way back in 1973 my [Music] what every true racer takes a few bumps on his way to victory lane for Harry we'll remember those bumps and bangs but more than anything we'll remember his victories and we'll remember that incredible month of September 1991 when Harry Gant captured the imagination of racing fans everywhere winning six consecutive NASCAR races for Winston Cup and two Busch grand national events at the age of 51 we were just wild about Harry and as the years go by Harry Kent will remember those great moments that made him a legend memories that will never grow old will remember those moments - Thank You Harry Thank You indeed Harry Gant 258 miles have been completed 172 laps near his car number 4 coming out right behind the 33 here he is coming in a moment ago rubber a pliable substance often used in tires pliable mrs. rubber did that well yeah when it over like that right and over that tire liked it and I just pushed all that stuff back up in there they get something I'll have fiberglass that comes to they'll break as bad as we been rode the pitstop said Wallace in at sixteen six urban at eighteen three bow dine at nineteen seven and on the racetrack as we get ready to resume its Wallace and [Music] a fourth-place man will be Jeff Gordon and running fifth on the field Dale Jarrett with Morgan Shepherd six Ricky Rudd 7 we're gonna have 12 cars back in the Lea black Randy well Rick mast is back in the pits prior to that caution Rick almost caused the caution on the front stretch they came in three different times now they pulled the quarter panel Ani it does have a little damage where he made contact with another car he's called from for some stop leak as well his water temperature is going up as far as Joe Nemechek is concerned they just changed four tires Jeff when I change four put in a round of wedge just trying to tighten the car up just a little bit also Terry Labonte and the 31 car the Hardee's car Ward Burton were in just regular pit stops and four tires dick Berggren learn the urban scars very close to being right when he came in they just loosened it up one round and sent him off the 24 Jeff Gordon's car is a little bit tight they are hoping and praying for an eclipse they want this sunshine to go away so the car not yet stabilized and they changed the car just a little bit Rusty Wallace car was both pushing [Music] we've got a crash the main straightaway grissom and number 29 on the restart as he came up through the gears into the wall head-on and the leaders are racing around he was in tenth spot remember they'll race back to the green down here on the main straightaway car number 29 lights right in the center of the track and the around there Tommy Mottola radio ladies liver and heart is made his lap up Earnhardt Kyle Oh Kyle Petty just getting by [Music] blood pressure go up at all Richard that looked to me like Kyle might very well find the back end of that 20 huh he's seen out I mean I knew they'd seen the car so I wasn't worried about that deal is anybody take him coast agenda that was pretty much of a chance right there but he was a lad he was a couple laps down so that made a lap up for him but that's what Earnhardt back in the back and go into the 13th position Kyle was three last night that makes him up likes him - absolutely rest of the fields still coming by as carnival 29 on the start remember he was having such a great run today he was intent on that start if it hammers it into the wall didn't run so regular not taking any chances or anything you know coming down for the start here's how it looked [Music] intent that Harry Gant was right behind him you know I don't know if he didn't run into the core right that's what it looks like [Music] Cantus on here they are racing back to the line if to come all the way around tell you what worried me was not so much Kyle it was there was a car on the outside as well well that both of us seen what was going on it they loud for I didn't understand the to court on tracing back to try to beat the three-quarter that it kind of surprised you think got somebody on the radio well yeah but won't happen they knew it was clear all I had to do is say run you know you okay but they came around side-by-side and the to : awfull into three good you see Earnhardt who's now back in that lead lap he's made it up just like he did a year ago remember he was a little app down he made it up and came back to win let's see if he can pull that off again today hey race fans Budweiser asks who won it was May 29 1988 in the Charlotte Motor Speedway the 600 mile classic getting underway the 28 of Davey Allison led from the pole with Jeff what is number 5 alongside while those two greats battled it out for the lead another superstar was working his way to the front the familiar black number three was Dale Earnhardt on board moved up to the seventh starting spot in contention for the victory while these three great racers were duking it out at the front of the pack two more the day's top stars were quietly waiting for the latter stages of the 600 to make their move to the front of a packed car 17 with Darrell Waltrip on board Rusty Wallace in the 27 holding back see how the battle up front would sort itself out but whose strategy worked that day the list of contenders the answer in a moment I see strength to beat the heart and the five of jebediah were involved in very controversial spill near the front of the pack after the dust settled and the fenders were collected off the racetrack both bow dine and Earnhardt were out of contention who died because of the damage to his number ernhardt because of a five lap penalty that was imposed for that incident the surprise of the day was Bartow Florida's Rick Wilson up in carnival for Wilson Lent 106 laps before trouble struck he crashed hard that set him to the sidelines that opened the door for Jill Wilkins into 17th as Rusty Wallace of the 27 to battle it out for the win but in the end rusty couldn't get by Daryl picked up his fourth victory of the Memorial Day classic the one is brought to you by Budweiser the king of beers with that clean crisp cold taste nothing pizza pie [Music] back to you with just a lap complete under green a hundred and eighty laps complete 3y back here as they sandwich [Music] 270 miles are complete second bow diners [Music] Dale Jarrett 5th Morgan Shepherd in six a little further back on the back straightaway there's Ricky Rudd 7 Lima move up night the sacks Earnhardt is now 210 but Rick mast is 12 now mast came out of the track very late he and Sterling Marlin the field was actually coming down take green and they were just exiting pit road so there's Apple app from being overlapped by those leaders and remember that mass is on the lead lap in 12th position [Music] got a little more shadow out in that racetrack ops division six and he didn't have any trouble with the tires at that time [Music] and cools off and it son gets off of it and you can see a little bit different race you're gonna see some of these cars it didn't run too good change and some of the who's running a who's the Goodyear thing that really with new tires now you know how they gonna fade at night Dale Jared they're in fifth position now at Joe Gibbs car number 18 a couple of cars pitting here's al-abadi coming in and also derrike cope is pitting another time you see the 18 car with Morgan Shepherd right after him in the 21 they same cars been [Music] no nobody said anything ooh I was Earnhardt again but nobody said anything about him but he's just been steady just a knock upon [Music] Jaron he has some time out here fighting with Morgan Shepherd 16 months since Dale visited Victory Lane these are not forgotten what forget one in the world oh we've got one in trouble and free spinning crashing all the way around Walsh if just getting by 44 and that is the Billy Bobby Hamilton car out of the svet astable lost up in turn two and Waltrip coming for sure looked like he was going to collect him somehow just barely missed the spinning car number 40 of Nashville Tennessee Bobby Hamilton that winds up saving the Rick mast from getting lamp he's he's gonna be able to catch back up and staying the same left with him wallets coming around getting set to pit here a little flat spot of those tires he was in 29th position three laps down took place or you look for all the world like Walter pecan is way out of this thing the five-time winner Wallace got lucky the court went back up the trackage did it kept coming down kinda thorough ladies move to the inside this made the right move and everything worked out this one so many times that inside you're getting in trouble we was lucky that's another one car wreck we have yep one car wreck here and then one car wreck there that was two-in-one over buffer at three one car wrecks double Corexit that's pretty good an observation from Kenny Wallace Steve you were really running good man start at 28 moved up to fifth we've been talking about you all day what happened that's just kind of one of those deals there on the restart everybody's trying to get going and I don't know some I must miss to see up there something up a little bit there was enough room for everybody so yeah this is a shame you know your new team you guys to start out first you're trying to get some good points Gary better put a good you're running great today so uh you know I guess you go on to Pocono yeah it's true I think you're coming back to super people but this whole thing my hat's off to the car drove super it was just having fun kind of logging laps there and try to get toured in okay back you guys take a look at this Richard Alamo Langley in a tremendous battle with Russell I've seen one down here in the first corner they've got an Elmo Langley fan club everything here they've got a few people after our driver yeah he's got his banners and the whole thing for Elmo the other day I and Earnhardt and I think Wallace was they were all out there and he was on the track well you gotta figure if they used up the paint on taking ice in the bumper they get to arguing with him and stuff and they tell them said look I got I believe four laps in y'all let's take a look at the replay all right turn to Bobby Hamilton loose yeah he was up there all by said I don't know what happens after that time you really got lucky because he had anything here all the slides I was Darryl with the course data did he get lucky nobody hit him he's not he didn't even hit the fence he just got up in loose there was able to just come around with four flat tires all that ones anyone worn out [Music] CW is hard to do he might have flapless to where he locks [Music] naima Jacqueline a bunch of lead by the prison [Music] it's a miscommunication guys he was on the lead lap he had the opportunity to come in the lap before did not just kind of missed it so miscommunication there in now for four tires originally Jeff bodean was going to come in and take I guess only now Joe Nemechek goes back out absolutely will kill his track position track position counts for so much on this mile and a half Richard well it really did space laughter culture okay everybody calls for new tires and everybody races for a few laps so you get behind right quick if you're not up in London we're about 13 laps away from the halfway distance of 200 laps for 300 miles into we get worn out the 600-mile event this racist North we're Delaware or a coconut no not really you don't want to I tell you that the time of day or it's a lot better now but when it was really really a hot day it really just takes everything starch out of all the driver the over does the same thing this but this has made it a lot nicer for a 600-mile race you've another four and a half hours now and it really doesn't bother you that bad how long would it take you to recuperate after a 600-mile race in the old age you start at noon and you'd raised till tonight are you ready to go the next day there's no work yeah who you out of the car when the race is over but you know Monday morning you at the shop working on the car getting ready for the next week let's get a racing update on what else is going on this weekend quickly as we get set to rego in the 600 here's Rick Benjamin well Ken Squier we've certainly got a lot of racing action not just here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway of course the Indy 500 today the emphasis of car is also in action at Lime Rock Park at Connecticut tomorrow going to show you some highlights of what's gone on in the Auto week weekend racing today here from the Charlotte Motor Speedway we can show you what happened yesterday during the Busch Grand National Champion spark plug 300 cars came down to take the green flag yesterday and up front it was mark Barton quickly getting toward the lead even though a lot of familiar names were a little deeper in the pack Martin started at the 5 spot yesterday there was a bad crash about midway through this event several cars involved and looked as though Stanton Barrett a rookie contender may have made a wrong move Chaz little fought the outside wall very hard suffered some injuries broken bones and a possible concussion bill Parsons took advantage after a late pit stop and made a great move to the victory here's your pole qualifier for tomorrow's event at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut this is Eliseo Salazar and 109 miles an hour in a Ferrari in the world sports cars and earlier today at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Al Unser jr. took his new Penske Mercedes to Victory off the green flag al sat on the pole Emerson Fittipaldi was leading with only about Oh Santa Paul D bear got into the wall coming out of turn four Al Unser jr. then went on all alone under caution to claim the victory at Indianapolis today there's the phone number if you'd like to order Auto weeks and it's an 800-number toll-free easy for you we're back live at Charlotte Kenton indeed we are at laughs 189 mark mark denna trying to make his left there's the number six car that's Martin on the bottom getting up underneath Ernie Irvan going for Rusty Wallace Pontiac stays in first [Music] I thank your partner maybe slip down and a whole bunch up my bow [Music] we got hit by earth in the three parties did Oh [Music] stop six seven eight nine car jam everyone [Music] laughs 189 Barney's car lies in the bottom all morning to build fires I saw I put his hand up he pulled up on the outside he got collected driven down the track here's Rick mast and had that great run going was in 12th position had made up that flat found himself back among the leaders ernhardt is made of viral car coming in now the of Mark Martin I was trying to make up a lap he was up among them he had some kind of trouble cause he had slow down everybody'd seen him except for a more just proved right up in the backseat with he still after and not that four or five four six-four was Ward Burton and Ward Burton was one of the richer now I got it yeah the the nine car was in that one rich bickle had no place to go Mark Martin as we mentioned the to card I think there's got to be more unity or I think it's eight or nine cars before we see at the end of this month kind of festive degree old stuff up on him a little tape on him sent him on back after with him so I'd left 192 caution is out major incident at least eight cars in turn four more on at the moment [Music] from the Rev Estes aerial platform take a look at what happened here cause this major incident Mark Martin backing up to four or five cars for on our Lord just run ride the back and then that when no place we have to go either there and then the 31 and against the wall Dick Trickle to get you in the front of the Mark Martin car al got caught up in it there yeah just took a little piece out of the side of great Sachs have Greg sacks was the luckiest one out there pretty right Luke another angle take a look at this and we'll see where Earnhardt had no room at all you're on the brakes in front of him he pulls up now it gets worse okay the 30 car slows down and Earnhardt moves if commit to hit me assume that anyone's into the six foot which was was running slower yeah look at that 77 car by him on both sides and slowing down and wait for everything and they hit on both sides he just did touch the 31 car there are piles in their own outside of it from Mark Martin's in-car this is where it began something happened me so he's got his hand up right he's trying to tell him what's going on [Music] he's trying to come down bang [Music] so they're hidden here [Music] and day for Mark Martin that day for a bunch of oh my back and a good day that they all woven away that's that too Mark Martin certainly had one of the cars to beat today what happened we cut a left rear tire down right there in the front of the pack and before I could get to the inside they started passing me on the inside and the outside I knew I was gonna rag tight I had a tire down you know and it just there wasn't a way to hold it I don't know when they started running into me in the left front and the wreck was gone but you know it's hard to drive that thing with one tire down especially hard to drive up with cars passing up both sides in a tire down mark how frustrating was it out there the Hoosier cars seemed to be so good they're pretty good we were we had a great race car man we had a car that was going to be a contender tonight and we you know we were messing around and we've got had bad some bad Luck's all we had a tire going down and pitted early and then the car she came out and got us a lap down but I believe we were going to make it up I believe we got her lap back before it was all over with the super car in the super run and now it's a heap of junk let's take a look at it again and listen to the action [Music] [Music] okay guys it's complete pandemonium down there we've never had this big of a crash there must be six or seven cars the one car Rick mast led early had a great night going you can pan out and see all this action there trying to get this car back in the race the radiators all the way into the fan so uh it's wild down here right now guys [Music] yeah that certainly bruised that one badly and that car six that was the same car that got beaten up in the Winston select they rebuilt the whole thing for him and to have it end like this michael waltrip broken shoulder blade and all down there and the inside still truck hey I'm glad I hate anybody gifts in a wreck but glad he wasn't a talker it was just 30 Matt much worse [Music] okay and thirty-one had no place to go the 32 was run into the wall great 41 got through Neiman's here - here comes the same to say before Naga winery good thing boy I said saving saving Gora steal go dick Berggren well Dale earnheardt gets the award for working the hardest on his car should say his crew is recall it early in this race he was complaining that the car was pushing it was under steering well they have come in on virtually every caution period given up track position consistently to adjust this car he's in but they are getting [Music] Wallace [Music] Morgan Shepherd ricky rudd joe nemechek eight Harry Gant knife Bernard ten ten cars lead lap when they come by two laps from half [Music] okay then we're dead man right [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] helping Pontiac guys [Music] like all [Music] a couple laughs course [Music] they're both on whose [Music] [Music] see that 30 car hanging right in [Music] halfway it is time by after michael waltrip looked like a candidate to win out here yesterday got it he faded the third and yesterday's race Phil Parsons at that michael waltrip was quoted the paper this morning real happy [Music] a lot of people just pulled up [Music] don't like to see nobody likes everybody get a good run [Music] that racecar driver just like a by michael waltrip so special make she's so proud to be associated with it he gets beaten he's driving out there and painting when the best he can do and [Music] says how proud he is he I don't have a benefit of the doubt food he said yeah he's always good they've got to give him that oh yeah we used to give you that so wallet hanging right on you see Jeff Gordon in the 24 car [Music] of Morgan Shepherd working we hadn't heard of [Music] maybe his timing they've been run half the race maybe it's time for Morgan to get involved in the third [Music] [Music] back there in 4th and closing in here cops Morgan Shepherd [Music] Morgan fades up to the outside the little Ricky Rudd is also there he's in the lead lap Goodwin tight car number 10 I hadn't heard says no telling him he's just been very good [Music] advantage of that particular position that they got on the Trent's what we talked about yesterday old penny thing you know you just in there nobody's paying attention but halfway and halfway you're in the lead lap they start paying for our new jacket into the old 43 was but halfway they was time to pack the toolbox [Music] talk about the Michael Waltrip [Music] Shepard finished second in this race in 87 while behind the wheel of Stacy car [Music] like sir on around the race [Music] how do you like those life they're not carlson - these are rising to make it right there I mean tonight okay the nitrites room okay if they go in turn ammonia as the Sun Goes Down and starts getting darker they notice it as much but if they wait it gets Twilight and internal hey man that's a big big change all at one time how do you feel about racing in the life most right [Music] I'm separated from ever mine under the rate under the device but I think it's really good [Music] break up things here is faced with big racetrack even Saturday night specials really Jeff Gordon stays fourth spot [Music] right in front of it [Music] in the coca-cola 600 35th annual from the Charlotte Motor Speedway with Richard Petty I'm Ken Squier and from the rebuses aerial platform here's how they're running those 24 degree high bags preparing a new nose for that car when he ran into the back end of mark Barton he pushed it in the real problem is not aerodynamics as you might think what's happened is the car is beginning to heat up just about every crew member including Andy Petree and Richard Childress are gathered round here trying to get this thing ready for Earnhardt unscheduled stop for Darrell Waltrip on lap 210 he's in the pits he was running slowly for a lap many all the side the radio said we don't have any fuel pressure so they either lost a fuel pump or they have a pickup problem he also radios him set go in running getting a fuel cell from one of the guys that is already out of the race you seen them back under underneath the rear deck lid of the car they're checking the fuel system it's either a pump or a pickup problem there he goes he's leaving and heading back on the track I'll try and get him further up this running 14th when he came in well gentlemen there's also a tire story developing gear we've seen a couple of cars completely lose the tread of their racing tires what I'm holding is the piece of tire that Sterling Marlin ran over 30 or 40 laps ago this is the same thing that happened to Mark Martin this is a brand new outside tread of a brand new racing tire because you'll see the bolt marks in the depth marks in this tire tread Marlin ran over and caused some damage we saw one of these come off mark Martin's car that's what caused that big pileup in turn three no indication as to whether this is a good year or a Hoosier but it is an indication that maybe these tires aren't up to the heat and the speed tonight here at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the speeds ready to climb Sun is setting 33 miles an hour well below the average of 145 a year ago and earnhardt set the new 600 record we've had six cautions 30 of the laps run this wire 214 have been under a yellow flag [Music] going up front and here you see the battle [Music] six liters eight lead changes thus far caution for that big crash moments ago incidentally yesterday and that crash in the main straightaway talked to him in the hospital this morning as a broken right leg as a broken shoulder [Music] hoping to be back in three to four weeks [Applause] [Music] couple of drivers to take over and take Chad's car out and grand national competition over the next two or three years show here's rust ernie irvan's trying to chase him down that I can understand right there in incidentally Greg sacks is back in the race after an 11 minute repair that was the white number 77 [Music] that wreck Earnie urban ready to challenge coming down on the inside [Music] coming to lap to 18 [Music] bouncing shuffle and Ernie Irvan goes back into the league in another time [Music] how much strategy plays into this race Ernie [Music] because the weather change changes the chassis and being able to follow up on for making that car [Music] in a bubble [Music] first two or three hundred darrell waltrip coming back out and worked fuel lines and back out he comes again scoring points get a great night on Winston select [Music] gonna have a good day [Music] that's how close it is after 300 plus miles further back there you see the Earnhardt car number three [Music] he's having trouble with Joe Nemechek [Music] these cars are 6 and 5/10 back from the leader you see Jared in there Jarek is seven now here comes Earnhardt back on the inside Gant is in that group and remember he's in the lead lap the acts are going to put a black flag on him about a hundred laps ago though some smoke pouring out of the car but they didn't here he comes he's up there under Dale Jarrett and ernhardt to 7:00 p.m. [Music] naima checks about to get it castle so all of a sudden Dale Jarrett backs up in that room [Music] [Applause] number 17 Walter goes back to the garage area unocal fueling station didn't go to the garage pulled right over there and they're going to work another time Randi's there well they have found it it is the fuel cell they've got a pickup problem they went to Steve Grissom's team and they asked them if they can have a fuel cell matter of fact that is coming in now on the back side of the car over near the deck call for multiple air Isla bodies car and get in trouble also and would get right-side torn up terry labonte badly torn up Derrick coke spins back in the car in the straightaway and everybody's just getting by a car of cold spot grass and ended up right on the start/finish line name the wrong way [Music] we play on that vii party [Music] unfortunate for for adding material just got caught up in that best finish this race was thoroughly [Music] running 15th when it all came untied he's a replacement for Ricky Rudd in fact stable [Music] there's coke back underway when you think take a look let's go everyone yeah I was going place guys he just looked forward in the morning in rice krispies snap crackle and pop there they got there take a look at what happens I've gone okay yeah he lost the deal something you know what happened I don't know just took off there was nobody close enough it just took off this real real for a first and then that's what 170 miles an hour can't me good move he almost miss all those got got it all under there they're the Jenners right I'm up on also slow to call wait yeah just come out of that called him a derive true the derrick the spoon to try to piss over there [Music] there's the 33 and ernhardt back in another time dick Berggren is there [Music] fiber gotcha the bottom of his nose is writing in the ear working [Music] right now they're drilling away and they're gonna put aluminum rivets in there to try to hold this piece down and get hurt hurts no squared away that piece they're putting on her is not to make the car run Cooper that third to keep your front hip on the ground because ire gets all up under the car and then the car raises when it gets to the corner he can turn the corner we'll take a break right now and then be back with more the coca-cola 600 Winston Cup stock car racing on CBS arrogant coming after repairs today [Music] hey 5pi royal quality automotive formulas from the makers of Valvoline for performance products there's just one name Thai royal by liquid wrench non-flammable with teflon thousands of uses around your home shop and car and by the official directory of NASCAR the Winston Cup Series this year go racing with your own personal guide call 1-800 race three four five with Jericho you're on board in car number 98 see a little better day here at Charlotte it's not been good for him thus far and you see the five car coming in Livadia that's all beaten up let's go down to Kenny Wallace okay guys we're down here in the garage area for everybody that can't see all these wrecks that are happened the garage is filling up but this is how everybody's finding out what's going on down here in the garage area the family channel will Pollard he's got two TV monitors you can see me on there right now this is what's happening down here it's getting pretty busy listen to how everybody is keeping tabs on the race track dick Berggren that's over to you well Ernie Irvan came in and they are just about touching these cars now Kenny Wallace he just put a little took a little tape off the nose of the thing and Rusty Wallace car they took a little bit of wedge out of it but most of the guys running up front seemed happy with their cars ready well Joe Nemechek came in they took on four tires likewise for Geoff Bodine in the seven car Kyle Petty messing with his toe in of course he was involved in the wreck two cautions ago Johnny Andretti that team unbelievable I just talked to them they're on their seventeenth pit stop of the day you remember they caused the very first caution of the day they worked on that car all day with a cosmetic work dale jarrett made a big adjustment they moved the track bar the rear of the car that's a major adjustment Richard Petty could probably comment more on that and Kenny Schrader was also in check the tow in on that car but the Dale Jarrett car uh major adjustment there go to the STP fit center well while we watch these cars circulate under caution we want to remind you that this is your opportunity to pick up a copy of the official directory for NASCAR and the Winston Cup Series it's from BellSouth Everett says we've got a copy here we've been checking it out here in the pit Center tonight easy to get 2495 is the cost low shipping and handling and you can Dowe this number ready to take your orders and 1-800 refor five the official directory of NASCAR and the Winston Cup Series from Bell South and gentle but a lot of these drivers need a directory if their cars put back together and get back on the race director while for distance today Andretti gets first place he has already driven 840 miles Ilana Rusty Wallace leading this he's only gone about 342 Richard and that and ready he's back to 35 he's still gaining he still has more laughs more miles to put in it liquidity an esper sir so pit stops have been the order of the day it's changed things a bit up on the wall with Wallace Irvin bow dine Gordon the first for Morgan Shepherd v Ricky Rudd he came in for a moment that put Nemechek 2-6 move Dale Jarrett the seventh Harry Gant back to eighth gambit is staying out there after that ernhardt nights and then rut and let's go to dick burger well big squabble down here in Earnhardt spit NASCAR is concerned about the aerodynamic changes they're making to the nose of the car and asked him to bring it more into line with the way the car was before the accident they're down here with a pair of tin snips fiber glass cutting away a little bit off the bottom to try to do that I mean it's not like you've got a situation where you could exactly and carefully measure it but we do have a NASCAR official standing here with a tape measure and he measured it I don't think it'll fit the template so no matter what we're not worried about the sour Richard children Avenue and gaffers tape and to hold that thing together so the word is out advantage of the run into try to fix the aerodynamics the first time for first good quarter of the race no no calls no reacts and that that and now we've got about half the field run around there tape all over this wire and everybody rich it up you know Richard Petty to ever be in one of those races where you've really got the snout pit and then it ran better yeah [Music] you wind up getting in a wreck and I don't know that the car runs better it just makes you some that you make it run better I think sometimes that you just get so frustrated you say the heck with what it looks like out to do it you just go do the job so yeah we've we've run better after country Richard laughs one through 90 no yellows laps 91 through 229 that's what he's doing you know but a deal is about everybody's got he had some work you know I thought our car kept coming in instead he's been in about 14 pounds to tape trying to keep the heat down and darrell waltrip coming back on the track in car number 17 he's back out another [Music] two-thirty as they take the fly [Music] 45 miles are down Wawa's first and second and faux diamond is right there third Jeff Gordon back-and-forth steer that tender [Music] not to overlap Waltrip coming off that corner he ducks down to the inside to give them plenty of room and he comes down to the pit road walking his back on pit road after another single lap that's the second time too you notice that past the 28th had the two out why nice because here to do the two-car had the 28 outflanked and there he and there's the zip of course that are watching Ford's first second third [Music] as cars look so rocked solid when you see them come off [Music] Nucor is coming back on Jeff are using their tires up and the salmon car center saving his life Wallace fades back a bit for a moment now makes another run off and Jeff Gordon definitely closing that Chevy in from fourth position still side-by-side the first [Music] geoff bodine back there in third says that you try to save your equipment Charlotte you're gonna go backwards way we'll be racing flat [Music] and if you're going a little slow if you're trying to conserve they're gonna try to pass you and the guy making the pass right now is Morgan Shepherd [Applause] [Music] we changes down through here [Music] not particularly a great story for him but he certainly would like to rewrite it for today and the Wood Brothers [Music] my auto success your car [Music] Pierson's one of us Yarbrough you know they've had some good cars here been 36 races since Morgan Shepherd is one here he goes for the lead right now the car 21 is [Music] so you got Nemechek and back up there with them again your guns aren't hard let me correct that as you see Shepard comes up that places in third still Wallace and Bo dime to deal with regime still Wallace first and Morgan Shepherd right there 600 wins for the Wood Brothers over the years love to make it five on the efforts of Morgan Shepherd today [Music] at 2:37 here's Wallace first vote on 10 car legs back in second [Applause] the Morgan Shepherd [Music] all right keep smiling like it they gonna come in and check in with you the Kenny wall okay guys I got Jeff Andretti here who made history up [Music] you know we just didn't get the handle in cars because you know we like that's not here there [Music] we've done a great job of Luna Challenger and those are always nice and got to happy helicopter dance [Music] okay well guys he got me back I call him Jeff and he called me rusty you made history man congratulations thank God thank you back up y'all I thought he liked it whatever [Applause] [Music] kind of raising prides everything Ford's done le Hague and he'll get he'll get him some good finishes like he said long as it had wheels on they might even goo for food [Music] look at Nemechek he has been given up for a moment all day Nemechek up to six challenging Gordon again fighting with her than there's his mom [Music] check in the 41 having to go right now with Ernie Irvan great race Wow how about this one for second spot Morgan Shepherd on the outside and Jeff Oh dine with him in the seven car while erasing our horse can't have both of them [Music] Morgan Shepherd believe Earnhardt has made up a lap as he did year ago will Dale Earnhardt we'come the first man to win the 603 [Music] here comes Earnhardt tight ended up between 21 and 7 the leaders and himself 242 laps complete [Music] there's the story in the 600 is for its first second and third will it stay that way we'll see May 30th all across America is the abbadabba do day this is so good good scary moment that comes ernhardt Siddhant Lee Mark Martin is back in the race after 3,800 repair job out there trying to score [Music] [Applause] between a Chevy and a Ford inside Shepard alongside right behind him the 24 of 22 year-old Jeff Gordon that's got a good what's going on if there dan Wallace out in front of his crowd by about 25 30 car lengths one in nine ten seconds between first in the second-place war further back you see the $43 back going with car number 20 with joy they're back in 20th 21st position they're gonna have a heck around Jeff Burton they come Jeff Burton and 13 even having some kind of trouble he slowed way way down well you don't want to leave this one do you rich look at how he's gonna regarding give them a room ready you see my carton getting laughs take a look in the box upper right at the pass that was made moments ago when Jeff would uh I'll excuse me where we're going to get to that a moment a moment ago when Jeff Gordon got loose moving further down here one year ago Dale Earnhardt took control of the Winston Cup season 21 this coca-cola 600 Dale is second this year and he's not worried there's Rick I think that's as many laps as I've seen anybody run side by side down here you know you used to you do where most times you do it maybe a couple of laps but man they've been going hated here a lot of people think that Dale Earnhardt is off to a slow start this year in his quest for another Winston Cup championship here's how it compares to last season what he won the title after ten races three wins already at eight top ten finishes Dale loves to race for the title whether he's leading the pack or chasing everyone I like to lead to fire now you know and I don't get to a lot do you do Solomon you know you're running good you're consistent you run up there with them and that's it you know can't I take it any way I like to race racing them chasing them they chasing me whatever grace initiation of an ear Jason him right now ernhardt back to the leaf retraced the chase and that's Monsieur Bernard comes in uses up 20 me he's taking a whole racetrack that he that's the second way sir by better than yourself up in there now GF Angie hi dick Berggren standing by with car owner richard childress for number three the question is Richard have you got the car adjusted that well or just a demonstration of your driver's ability well you know we've all been working on the car you know it was heating a little bit after the wreck now we're taking up a push in the car you know that it would be right when the went down what we were hoping for it and you know nowadays with driving all he's got they have to get it back out there so you know we're just like a basic complete team effort again 379 miles have been completed as Wallace has pulled away from that second third and fourth-place battle as they continue to slug it out there it was an advantage for Wallace it's now better than three seconds three and three and they continue to duke it out back there in second spot [Music] but now they're hard to wipe off into the sunset otherwise the light from the sunset into the life look at [Music] they still racing no sunset yeah fourth fifth sixth seventh place cars over 20 yards b2 Earnhardt Shepherd Gordon load I'm Nemechek and here comes Morgan right back again [Music] take their places looking over here they're going for it [Music] the arrestees leading the race nobody's paying attention to him Richard I really like when Earnhardt got under bow dine here so we'll take a look and replay when we are great take a look at this six laps ago we were in commercial just move gesture there you know now he's trying together there comes Jeff Gordon under him also he was lucky together that doesn't look like me leave that thing moving the ones dick breaks loose you have a heck of a time getting that thing [Music] back with you live and you're watching as Bodeen works gorgeous this is before [Music] and here comes Gordon right back not willing to give and on the outside bow time there's nemecheck on your watch Ervin's right there two in the catbird seat with you at problem stay with us 257 laps are now complete in the coca-cola 600 385 and a half mile smiles complete and with this caution out for Joe Nemechek everybody taking advantage and getting in the pits getting new tires taking on fuel let's go back to that stop by Dale Earnhardt and get more on the story from dr. dick burger I've been running along just fine can we see this on replay he had been running along just fine took a pissed-off the problem was this tire right here the tire obviously lost its is tread and that is reason right rear tire is the one that failed while he was in here while this action was going on Rusty Wallace the leader has to putting Earnhardt a lap down I think Earnhardt has made more pit stops at this point by far than any other driver out here now he's got a lap to make up he hopes to win this race that pit stop was nineteen and three ten seconds but remember there is that speed limit was the speed limit this morning Richard 52 pound only 55 miles an hour on pit road and he went down a lap again he's made it up once can he do with the second time today and look at the front of that looks like a st. X arena fighter in the old day good shape lawless first Jeff Gordon now second Ernie Irvan third Morgan Shepherd fourth Dale Jarrett is bitten and Geoff Bodine is in six let's go to the STP Pet Center but Ken were joined by Ward Burton driver of car number 31 the Hardee's fried chicken car ward you were involved in that mix-up with Mark Martin what apparently a tire of his came apart earlier what's going on out there at this point well it's kind of hard for me to tell from sitting in the cockpit but it looks like they haven't problem with the tower but you know who's our in a good year both have good products and some we can't want about another but I'd like to say something about my heart is true I think you know we've been struggling I think they did a pretty good job on my day we're running good and we got a lap down to pitch and we know we need to practice there but we're coming you ran good you were running up I believe in the top 15 when that mix-up took place you were to hear a good shape for a good finish hopefully today of all the cars you see out here at this point you've got some good your car some Hoosier cars running up front who do you think is the strongest at this point of course the three-car if it gets his lap back which I'm sure he will up there he'll he's gonna be a threat all these cards right in here at threat 28 to Jeff Gordon some of these lap cars are running real good too you know it's easy for one of them get a lap back I'm not saying Edie but it's possible they could we can't cut anybody out a bunch of good cars Earnhardt's on the tail end of the lead lap thank you workers thank you again they put him right on the tail and they put him up in the that's kind of a surprise where to on Earnhardt the number three classy he's not a lap down because being like that he's has the prerogative to get up there you know way was to let a guy starlight he's the tail end of the lead lap right now so he dodges another bullet right so far he is and they have a quick cousin or something look at urban right up the middle as he splits the man moves beneath Jeff Gordon car Irvin [Music] Rusty Wallace for the lead and Earnhardt is not cheerleaders the lead lap the number 30 car is not [Music] twelve position right Jeff Gordon I've got it here is your right to Laxman two laps down all right I wasn't those slain eyes are right there [Music] they're the early [Music] that down have been getting further to fall okay all right so rusty stays first here's urban trying to chase him again it's Ford's first and second [Music] but Morgan Shepherd up on the outside [Music] I throw it from here and can't see except what's right in front of your what's beside it here you can just see everything yeah that's too much [Music] yeah [Music] scary if you thought from this banish back right all that become interfacing herself from this angle ninety-eight is right in the middle is second position product feels completed he's a 264 so Wallace days first urban second Shepherd third Jeff Gordon is in fourth now Jared back to fifth bow dine at six [Music] in eight those are all in the lead lap and in the top ten now it's Chuck Bown Chuck Bown in the Bobby Allison car and Earnhardt Earnhardt on the [Applause] ix carnet leave laughed and then go back to 10th place - Chuck Bown look at the pram race story out here on what we've seen thus far as we review if you're just joining us some of the leaders that have [Music] and he stays in 4th at the present time Goodyear is running one two three four five I'm car back in six for the bombing the 21 car Morgan Shepherd up on the outside going around Derek open with him comes Jeff Thornton report eighteen car this the pram race story ploy he got an idea about who's been leading and where the cautions would thus far in the race in on Morgan Shepherd for third spot [Music] exposition with car number seven his own [Music] our cameras they do some reflections get some different angles different colors and things if we get back to Gordon here I mean he's known with Hoosier far-left now in the first ten they've been eliminated to 41 and they and you know all the boys it was running good they've had problems and he's the only one left really [Music] oh ho not what happened to Wallace he faded way up the racetrack it's like the err taken off that deck back time he did a great safe darrell waltrip spin-out made another lap look scary for Rusty Wallace back two or three lanes he gathered it back up and stays on it okay a Earnhardt in the meantime got wet back in front now he's stealing the same hat Nikki pull the air often right about here [Music] no he's seen him rata right there so you have Ernie Irvan back to the lead Wallace to second and again Earnhardt has made up his lap he just keeps digging [Music] 276 laps are down so we're at 414 miles nine cars in the lead lap up to test 75 and [Music] Micra Walter okay would in there is sterling Martin Dale Jarrett swings around Morgan Shepherd takes fourth Shepherd falls in fifth go away from this one here two core back again the 2128 went in there and he went on [Music] Wallace to lead another time the sixteenth officially changed the only official leave changes accounted in the start-finish line they've been swapping it around a lot more than that's an official lead change so Wallace takes commands and I Rusty's led 103 laps today ninety-seven Ernie's had a crackdown as a few times see rusty Wallace's crew looking on where it lands ricky rudd is Todd Bodine who is a lap down alongside in number 75 Ricky's running seventh right and there you see the Chuck Bown car car number 12 they [Music] so that cars been running hastily he's one left they say the telephonic company out of chatter is going to join the race concoction support the Bobby Allison [Applause] correlation confusion maybe that happened to get laughs to 80 complete Ricky rut [Music] promotional fees of consideration have been paid by STP super concentrated fuel injector cleaner STP drive a better car you a WGM people working together and by Autoweek America's only enthusiast weekly Autoweek is first with all the news every week call 1-800 to 3 to 1520 for your subscription Rusty Wallace trying desperately to put her in heart a lap down he's almost caught him twice Earnhardt trying to have no part of it then back in second spot it is Jeff Gordon that's followed by Ernie Irvan and Dale Jarrett let's go down to the pit area talk about the man who started outside of the front row today Kenny Wallace yeah I got joe nemecheck Joe you've been awesome for two weeks here you set a new track record and the car was flying just being patient what happened I'm not real sure but I think we end up breaking a right front row door it shook real bad and then all of a sudden it just turned and went straight in the wall tough break for the Meineke Chevrolet we were finally hooked up we got a good break guys did the motor shop didn't excellent race car and then where we were supposed to meet but I'm alright all the bones [Applause] well one thing's for sure you've had a tough year but if you haven't proved yourself these last that's right you know we just everything's coming together it takes time but Charlotte's a place I like you know we had a good wish car yesterday we broke a motor I thought we had a chance of winning in this race so we'll be ready for next week okay back Larry and Sue Hendrick the owners of that car Martin Solon had given it their best shot along with Joe Nemechek well look at Wallace still trying to deal with Earnhardt and try to contain him and get him a lap down here comes her in the urban working again on Jeff Gordon and I'm around for second spot dice and slice this race up every which way know I've really been racing now they nobody could go home and say they didn't raisin going on really really try there you've got five cars right up here and they all read the same who makes the sleep of the dead and who has the right to our entire combination that particular pit stop and Dale Jarrett's on the move again he's coming back he's getting under Ernie Irvan there's Dale Jarrett right there beneath Ernie Urban and switching that third and fourth spot around here's Randy former Washington Redskins football coach Super Bowl winner Joe Gibbs owns this team but this is the quarterback Jimmy Carr Jimmy we saw you make an adjustment before maybe possibly on the track bar has that helped you here well actually it really didn't help as much as we thought might just a little bit for cars been real tight all day long we've been trying to work it out we made it another judgment after that took around the weighed out of it I do want to be I think you can never get it there have a shot this thing but I don't know if we'll get there now he may have dude do a great job where we want to be right the front of the pack in the tent wait to see the Hat sorry but Jimmy make our brother-in-law the man in that 18 car they've only had two top-ten finishes this year our quarters yep keep watching this slugfest here [Music] in here is a certain hydration without running into each other hopefully they hope did well they a little running into oil right now that's that's really racing this is what it's all about and you see what's happened here Rusty Wallace has accomplished what he set out to do he's put the cap back on the bottle in car number three put him a lap down would like to keep him there on a bet that he can yeah he got him man [Applause] and the fries fading again you're dead on Jeff Gordon getting round should be Spencer down on the bottom just in front of them the McDonald's car not been a factor today Dale Jarrett been 16 months since you visited Victory Lane and about two forgotten what it felt like we understand yeah we've forgot about that we've used it up pretty much here so what yes time for another wind this would be a good place to get us started you know I like the racetrack we've run well here and 600 miles I think it suits us because we to get better as the race goes on that's the way it's been in the past hasn't been this year so what we're looking to get back through that and we need a good run Gudrun they're getting Jarett staying right up here with the pack in third spot urban back and forth [Music] arrogant lies a thin area is still in that lead lap he's not around it he's been reading there all day long just a little long got close to that record in his fender stuff although he's fielding Joe Gibbs looking on [Music] the defensive unit right now right now he's still gotta they still got a long way to go here we still got over a hundred laps to go so he's not worried about a year to 94 [Music] conclusion of this one I don't know how they can do anything in the last hundred miles to trump what we've seen thus far each other 500 layer boy all right sale pretty rekka fans this is what better reason they did with a cooler and Steph is making the cars work better handle better while it seems to be working good Walla seems to working the best president third you saw Ernie Irvan right there he's also put a lap on her next pit stop will be pretty interesting out here car number 43 is pitting right in the petty SVP enterprises car got some black marks on the side of that thing a bunch of tape on the hood of it I think this is just a routine pit stop I think you're just doing it four tires to go last four or five laps he's really slowed down so gonna put the tires on the speedy back up a little bit nineteen positions where he's running I didn't think you could run a petty car unless you had tire marks on the side of it I thought that don't be talkin [Laughter] yeah really always help right and kind of speeded the earth they did yeah but I had a new car try to be real careful once I got black marks on I didn't cure okay so the 19th place car Wally Dallenbach is back on the track coming down to 300 laps complete in three will be 450 miles into this thing looking down on the last 100 first time Jeff Gordon has led since first laugh in the race take a look at how he did it Rusty Wallace in first the board and here comes that Chevy down to the bottom stick and takes home that front position for a lap or two you see Jared right here why to get back by right now Wallace working the bottom and he's got it and he worked down there that down see Kyle Petty's car back out there the nose and wavy to the game by what was he was watching out for him there you see Kyle he's number 42 backs got by him Jairus up to second place [Music] go see what he can do with Rusty Wallace here [Music] about six car lengths to catch you let's take a look further back here in the field tell you drivers having a great day is Loy Allen hooters cars running 13th that's the best run [Music] incorporation remember he came out and sat on the pole at Daytona started 37th here today and Loy Allen right now continues in the 13th position hooters t-bird [Music] of course to take over for Alan we can laugh about that during work down pit road again here's Earnhardt back yes indeed car number three is in [Music] see what they're going to do down here is they bring in the Goodwrench Chevrolet out there for tires dick Berggren is there well absolutely everything is gone we are taking more tires the ones you're taking off do not appear to be blistered but this Rusty Wallace is just below [Music] four-tire change burgers away at 18 point watch the lap and that's the critical part of this thing they're still making adjustments on the chance that you can see them they're working on the right rear so now he's two laps down yeah I don't know where he's gonna go down this is a whole different perspective from where he's got to come from yeah 305 this race that [Music] Ted Musgraves having a good race out here as well in car number 16 started back in 42nd position he's up to 15th and 10th in points these days Musgrave in 16 built that Jasper car a year ago for DK older except the second rauch right he's having a very good right to see it here right behind number 30 michael waltrip who stays 11 they put a lap on Jeff Burton in a braid now take another gander at this one there is the seven car going up on the outside and Darryl Waltrip they seem to have got that car that's a gray is worth betting that would agree that in the end yeah yes with a ID in fifth [Music] which are mirror side of the racetrack [Music] they get a lot of reflection around inside [Music] those cars are about four seconds back to the leader as you look at about four seconds back from Wallace Jarrett up there the 17 car of Walters we might catch you up on him he's well back he's only completed 244 laps he's rotting in 32nd position he was in a long time he did a lot of a single laps came back out in front of the fields on 308 and there you see Chuck Bown back to the attack found having a good race staying tenth now just a lap down from the leaders [Music] [Music] the factor the Sun seems to have gone down it has changed the complexion of this race somewhat Jeff Conine has been complaining that the car has been loose two pit stops ago it was oh there's a lead change right there Rusty Wallace going back down so now Dale gets a chance to command this thing waited a while for this opportunity just top of the cheap beginning they say they [Music] they make him some more adjustments but right now he's got the best adjustment car out there they better not seven different leader today Richard charity 94 finish was that fourth down at Darlington still suggestions to travel after they won Daytona they had a couple of good years many good races and this year's been really bad for third spot Shepherd around boards another time to swap positions riding with Jeff Gordon now he 311 400 laps complete coca-cola 600 from sharp to lose 25 points to urban who's then trotting six Maui attrition continuing to tell the story as Morgan Shepherd limps back onto pit road on car number 21 it just took him a long time to get that groove worked in he'd been working on it they finally started coming to him ooh brakes are gone and slapped the wall he broke the line fine we've got that right foot altogether [Music] we'll take another look at Orchard yeah watching the 21 car come back after it got cuffs big-time sorry I said anything I was watching we certainly think to find out more about their yeah I think to five folks at home before yeah Jarrid kidding Walla spitting Gordon everybody coming in all the top of the field this at lap 319 this will not get them home will it they can run about 60 laps that's about what they were nobody's trying to cheat that right now later on with my that we're watching as the 18 comes in you seen the two carpets well let's go to Randy Rusty Wallace is in keeping the idols up on his Ford Thunderbird Billy will were on the right side Jack already dropped this is the quickest to push been through in the business Dale Jarrett's team down below they're on the earth they'll jerk now down to the way Dale Jarrett down to the way for both organizations give you sometimes on those the two car first - car was a 16-7 on the Jared car a nine on the Jarrett car so we're under caution its lap 3:19 and it's getting towards show-and-tell time with Wallace and first Jarrett and second more to come from the coca-cola 600 gain contribution on behalf of TBS sports in the winning team to the make-a-wish Foundation of America one of the nice gestures from the folks at Advance Auto Parts and we'll take a look at the pits done quickly award a little bit later on someone's been hurt on pit road now this is in the Ernie Irvan pits among the Robert Yates team someone has been knocked down evidently and they have taken the injured crew pit up on the wall and we're going to find out a little more about that in just a couple of moments as we see some of the crew making their way back through the garage area we believe dick Berggren is there to tell us more dick well the injured crewman is Jeff Clark he's not badly hurt for sure it appears to be some sort of an ankle injury apparently when the 43 came in he tangled with him Jeff is the jack man here and they are very concerned about his ankle they are also concerned about what's going to happen when Ernie Irvan has to make the next pit stop because this guy is an excellent jack man you see Brian Vandercook who's the team's PR director standing behind Jeff got to have a jack man who knows what he's doing on these teams but these teams are so talented I'm sure someone will be able to double up and jump into the fray teamwork is such a key and if you lose a second or two it can mean a lot of track position so we'll hope for the best for the crew member on the Yates team learn to Gretel's standing right there as well looking at his car maybe the trekkers stay under caution here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway under the lights on a Memorial Day weekend let's take a replay at that last moment here that changed the perspective of this race going down there you see that already stacked it into the wall and just kept it up there Morgan Shepherd the 21 that marked the what seventh eighth ninth ninth caution ninth caution thus far how many laps something like 41 laps plus under caution here average speed stays down at 135 - no record tonight Richard no they're talking speed that's right you had the record here four years until last year from 1975 they came you look again oh they don't have no coasters you make some good times forty three cars started the event pace cars about to come in laughs 323 when they hit the marker [Music] [Applause] [Music] michael waltrip ten boy Alan up to 11 Musgrave 12 Sterling Marlin third now 14 sure begin to get the illusion of speed [Music] [Applause] [Music] with fresh tires [Music] Saucebox come off one of those cars my earn [Music] what they do they set the cars up to run as row [Music] as me they put all new tires in the track advice for everyone really anticipate and then start getting started you can see how severe those bum second and third place right down on the asphalt they're going to repave here they say shortly trying to fix that they've tried to fix that since what 73 or for since 69 I'm gonna build a rest but they repay it so nathan they've helped it along it's ready for a new in there let's see if we can get anything more on that Jackman just Park but Jeff Clark is going to stay here and Jack the car [Music] understand I'm gonna do it that Shawna Robbins fiance Jeff Barta Martin's car number six is being Rhoda's fine they could look here as ernhardt down to the bottom tries to get a lap back 3:28 complete we finally give up altogether next time by they'll have 400 the mirror on this coca-cola Charlotte Motor Speedway and what a contest we've seen here's Earnhardt with another thrust to make up a lap and Wallace trying with everything he's got to keep him contained two down given [Music] Dale Jarrett batteries lumina is having tonight Joe Gibson Jimmy make art got to be some happy about this [Music] 500 champions staying right there within striking distance of car number 2 Rusty Wallace the 1990 champion of this 600 [Music] but there's a lot of people got talent he just tends to do it so bad matter what the circumstances is he's going to and just very few people [Music] determination and ability and all that stuff put into one person total package he's made up a lap now he's one down Plus almost a full laugh like caution right now thank you but it's not falling so we'll be back with more of the 600 shortly here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway stay with us for all the action here on TV [Music] back live at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on a Sunday night the coca-cola 600 in the final stages tonight about 60 70 laps to go here and it's getting down to quite a battle we've got several cars running up front it's been a dandy so far and I'm sure the last 50 or 60 laps are going to be even more wonderful now all season long the United Auto Workers and General Motors team up to build great automobiles all across North America and they've teamed up to get involved in racing they're sponsoring the team work of Excellence Award we're going to select a winning team tonight that team will get $5,000 for their great teamwork here in the coca-cola 600 there will be points tallied all season long at the end of the year the winning team gets $50,000 just another example of the teamwork exemplified by UAW and Gia we've got our own brand of teamwork here on TBS as we bring you our coverage of Winston Cup and Busch grand national races Darrell Waltrip had some advice for the newest member of our broadcast team earlier this weekend yeah Richard you do all the talking don't let don't let kin and I say too much you'll be a lot better off a man who certainly knows what to say and when to say it Darryl Waltrip and we want to welcome certainly Richard Petty the newest member of our team now what a team player old DW is yeah he's a lot of help right I used to race with him so I know where he's coming from what what he's that are acting for you no okay we're down to 100 miles to go on this thing time to get down with the program and this resolved what's going to make the difference in this last 100 you still got seven cars and that lead lap really good candidates Wallace Bodine is up there Jarrett is up there Jeff Gordon hasn't given up much tonight at all you call him back to forth to the moment you get the feeling he's going to come back Ernie Irvan Ricky Rudd and Harry Gant is still there and that lead line yeah the hair is still digging they can't take anything away from really what this is gonna come down to right now is laughs and stuff if we've got left if it's a green flag stop or not it's a green flag stop that Wallace has got the better of the pit crews in [Music] if they comes it goes ahead runs and they happen to have a cause of where they can run away part of the race under green well okay [Music] 3:39 so as the picture gets drawn here you see Earnhardt again fighting his way back up still again to take that lap back [Music] he is shorten a shish he's exactly what you said Richard Dean Herman everything that car and if he's ten laps behind he's out there to do a job that's the best he can live with but he enjoys doing and that's the main that's the difference on in yeah they've got everything going for him and they can do the job but they looking at the monetary deal or they're looking for whatever you know just gonna go do it he says if I do it good enough I'll make money that's way too poverty laxity over coming back from at 13 or 12 or 14 laps when I was left race in Nashville Tennessee and Christ real early in the race and not and everything one of the races where you say no way this car can't even get around the racetrack and that Jared did that one time I think I forget somewhere game from Kuala Lampur made a bunch to have a daughter [Music] and good that a lot of the people had problems but anytime do that for [Music] you might got three or four laps running the circumstance that so Wallace still struggling to keep Earnhardt those laps down and [Music] [Applause] for position this is something to keep the body my score drivers and they've been pretty good them and they beat on each other for five you hardly ever see him knock each other out like they did the other night but that was his circumstance they don't mind racing with each other they I think they try to intimidate each other he ever needs all that we're trying to same thing is they you know kinetically really respected you and of the race strategy let's see what they plan to do and go first to Randy everybody tear it up here to talking the rusty on the radio buddy 56 to go Windu you pit and do you make up the first pit stop do you wait for somebody else to come in what do you do it [Music] we can't follow the you know they'll follow us and do what we do but we're gonna leave her down about 40 laps to go and make a pit stop okay that's the strategy from the to pit I'm with Jimmy minicar what when are you gonna pitch inning we're looking to pit with about 20 laps ago or so dish and I hope that that the to call force their hand first and see what they do and then make our decision strategy for the end of the race [Music] and on the gas it's about there it is Oh facing a team backing up and Jeff Gordon tapped him as they came through turn three he collects his backup and they run side by side [Music] is all over him [Music] as the standings are it's poured in first Ford in second Chevy and third Hill fifth Ricky Rudd's Ford is six Narragansett best we can do for Pontiac his tenth right now for michael waltrip yeah he's been struggling staying out of trouble that's why he's got that Ford and Chevy tied and the manufacturers battle is here eleven Cup Series there you see Jeff Gordon just 22 years 600 races you feel that he has that same determination he's so young [Music] not all together they don't he's coming through at a different different age different circumstances Earnhardt had to work [Music] not saying to the pond before [Music] he's coming from a different school [Music] we get to [Music] I'm seeing it right now in third [Music] Jeff Gordon [Music] [Applause] only for drive [Music] GFF they're running second now and he's the only only car in the first ten I guess it's got on the news retires everybody else has had trouble but he's coming home he's on geysers take a look at the Sears crafts from upcoming TBS Winston Cup races July the 17th the Miller Genuine Draft 500 from the two and a half mile track at Pocono Pennsylvania then September 10th Saturday night under the lights on the 3/4 mile in Richmond Virginia track and you can still get a ticket to see that one under the lights is incredible and then October 9 we're right back here for the mellow yellow' 500 in Charlotte North Carolina wallace's race to win or lose right now he has the advantage he's trying to build on it Jeff what I'm trying to find a way to capture him they have another pit stop up coming see what happened it began in the heartland in towns small if he could win we've seen this before where Roger Penske's teams have won an Indy car with contemporaries of the same weekend but this is the biggest weekend in motorsports Penske driver Allen's with junior already won the Indy 500 rusty may make it to four to here today at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in midnight now our friends at Pocono Raceway want us to tell you about the UAW GM sweepstakes the UAW GM teamwork 500 is coming up on June the 12th there and you can get involved in a special sweepstakes that has a million dollar prize money isn't VIP trips available to apply for a bracing MasterCard at involved will be at Pocono for their second event this year in July we're looking forward to that we're getting down to the end here a lot of teams planning their strategy for the last few laps randypepper to the standing by Jeff what is Barry Paul Andrews crew chief or Jeff when I'm coming down off the Box for me Paula if you don't catch a caution when will you pay I know you're closing in on them right now yeah we're getting pretty close we need well you change any tires are just gas and go I don't know we'll see what happens we really haven't decided okay dick Berggren what are they gonna do down there with the 24 code well I was gray every hammer a what will you do on your next mission we're not sure they don't have to watch and see what the leaders stand up with a gas and go [Music] do you know if the yellow comes out as a feature [Music] I think if we can adjust on the car shootout you know Jeff Gordon with ten laughs I'll put money on him [Music] 537 miles in the rearview mirror as we get down to the this coca-cola 600 [Music] as lawless days in front but wallace's lead is dwindling wallace's lead is being eroded as boudin continues to clamber back into this thing [Music] Jeff Gordon to do to catch him the 16 car there has just stopped we've got pointy tire he's a little bit quicker than the salmon car right now Jeff Gordon in third spot he finished second here one year ago and he says he learned a valuable lesson well you know when you when you get here and towards the end it's gonna be at night and laugh position where I had to run really hard to run second trying to run down Dale Earnhardt for the win you're gonna I'm gonna run off a hard on what the thing is you don't really need to run real hard at the beginning you take it easy save your racecar save your tires and wait for that that perfect pit stop there towards the end the Dalek car hopefully you know be about a 50 60 lap shootout there towards in and we'll be there I'll be pushing off a heart if it comes down those last 50 laps looks indeed like it's going to go to the last 50 laps as Borden your number [Music] in the show physician wallace stain first bow dive in second there you see Rusty Wallace he puts a laugh on a Rickman [Music] Jeff would I'm running in second position [Music] if you find where Jeff Gordon you see him coming off turn four that's the separation the interval on the top right up in there let this race [Music] position here's Gordon caution would certainly make different race out it's gonna be a different race even pissed off [Music] like to say the open table the end of the race now they got to settle down and say what are we going to do we're gonna have to do it now they got all gonna have to start for this fourth position [Music] [Applause] - here's 28 in fifth just behind him [Music] do they go you might be the last of her heart but he's still there [Music] having six spot and completing cars in the lead last 600 is day smashed in arrogant is staying right with car 33 what will be your role we the US tobacco folks after you put racing here in many years and Beeler consulting here with the teams of faith may the third opinions there's some tests and stuff with a baby the racetrack just on the [Music] appreciate ya with him in the race he lost him in a socket and lost brakes it had post brakes anyone and we'll try it very hard [Music] just beyond the top seven that lies a alive Earnhardt is there in ninth Michael offered to boy allons [Music] car 12 followed by Hut Stricklin Sterling Marlin 14 Bobby Hamilton 5th Lakes beaten derrike cope is 17 you're seeing a complete with you here all through the field down at the end of it [Music] yeah there's bill Elliot's number a lot had to take a provisional start at 43rd actually 42nd because John so up to 22nd has move what a frustrating year for him that environment you know they [Music] most of that they don't learn good and just never been able to put it all together this year and how they figure but you know at reveal didn't won championships and won a bunch of races and done the same thing you've got winning people they just not getting it done and you know there's no one particular thing probably there's causing that they don't know what's causing they just not getting the job then and we want to let you know who the Western auto mechanic of the race is Ray Evernham the crew chief for Jeff Gordon is the winner of the award the Western auto mechanic of the race posted tonight our hats off Jeff may not win the race but Ray Abraham comes over winner tonight here at Charlotte guy is really good to be in the IROC series remember those parts roll [Music] pretty good with what he's doing speaker sure is like the two cores getting away from the 7/7 was catching him pretty good down through for five laps he's kind of worked it back out there to Rusty Wallace he tries to draw away the car recalls midnight and as it gets darker it seems to be running stronger once again he's getting closer to midnight [Music] [Music] noted earlier when they put those little better at first than the Hoosiers that's all right only what happened to - cor he before quit just quits all the time and then they have to Canadian Tire so far is not quit 30 laps because 29 laps to go [Music] I'll be long but some of them will start dropping in here and then one drops and everybody of them a 550 complete we'll be here to bring you the action in the coca-cola 600 hey San Francisco the next great play they took on four tires and hit it in sixteen point five seconds they can gamble this team is so fast on pit road they want it's ready to come in they're complaining about the car being loose they're thinking about taking on two right sides so if they can do that put in enough gas in the car just to go the distance Jeff may go to Victory Lane go dime has taken the lead [Music] Ernie Irvan on pit row [Music] and falling to the end of the 77 of 400 to be right clean it away six car seven they say is getting ready to pit [Music] currently in third on pit road the leaders seven cars that lead lap making their pit stops now bit fours are doing it one of I was watching you know has pitted he's back out again Travis Carter clock here's Randy now Dale Jarrett is in burning on the right-side tires on the interstate Chevy same thing for him they've just radioed to Jeff one time they said come on in so Kevin is also going to take on tires it appears they want to leave them out and see if see if you can catch a caution live over 18 seconds now Jeff what I'm roles in the exercise board side tires going on and surprises me that what he doesn't two tires and given up fuel but I need at least two hands see boys are not on the racetrack [Music] quicker pissed off fires are so so important right quick so they need all here's Gordon coming onto pit road can't should be coming in shortly [Music] we'll go to dick Berggren as Jeff Gordon makes his pit stop where it's getting ready I tried to get through [Music] Gordon right-side tires [Music] going [Music] Gambas in number 33 is on pit row the the difference [Music] in the 7/4 after they got on the right back on the racetrack was four seconds too far beating four whole seconds around admire even though he didn't beat him to the second and a pit stop he gets in and gets out so good here's Waltrip back in 30th position on pit road so he's now got a forward a half second lead all of the seven core we wouldn't but a half a second when they made a fish the top hood joy in the 20 car who was running an 18th position stop by Ricky Rudd [Music] correction a great stop by Jeff Gordon [Music] should be leading right now what should be first we should be showing a belief vote on second want to see wanna see Gordon second yeah I can I can utter that I got played Gordon's stretching it out of Creek 384 still on the track is going to take another lap ken schrader pity remember he had trouble early in this race [Music] really strong to those final practice period it's not to be his he's running the 20 interval first ii stands at 14 seconds from second to third that's where the race is gonna come down [Music] his own team trying to draw it out here [Music] hey he's not not a lap lead since we feel there would be that big an advantage except they are everybody right started 13th on the day at lap 386 [Music] and just about identical speeds right now [Music] a couple of Goodyear cars back there in that second and third position here's what well Ken were watching my candidate for the liquid wrench slickest move of the race award ricky rudd waiting he's leading with 13 to go he's put off his pit stop hoping for a caution if it pays off for the driver of the tide ford the number 10 he could well go to Victory Lane here at Charlotte with that slick move first a second and got it down to 11 seconds what was it 13 [Music] they are closing in on rut [Music] he stretches it to lap 387 388 388 on the board now if they come by 12 to go Kenny Wallace is back [Music] I think it'll catch up [Music] Paulette risky business or Ricky Radha's who stays out there tend to go this time by [Music] Dale Jarrett [Music] one lap down michael waltrip in [Music] michael waltrip a Purple Heart that interval which was 11 seconds to laugh between the leader you rot in Jeff Gordon down some more at 7 9 now ok the 10 quart [Music] coming in I am let's go to Randy the tide crew waiting for ricky rudd to bring his fork down pit road Ricky does fall they've calculated what they need they need three seconds of that fuel cans stuck in the nozzle that's all they need three seconds they can go the distance they're gonna blow off tires no tires here we go two one-thousand three one-thousand they're both free Kiera 2.8 we try to hold on to something [Music] Jeff Gordon [Music] Wallace the second on board and Jeff straight down [Music] snappy pitstop where's Jeff Gordon's fiancee [Music] [Music] Gordon takes first Wallace hosts second at 4:00 all the sixes just in front of Harry Jeff Gordon seeking his first Winston Cup victory set on the pole it's been a long time [Music] nineteen seventy-six the great David Pearson [Music] [Applause] Jeff Gordon Pittsboro Indiana the Jeff's demonstrated from two seconds to right now so he's really just outdone in the two yet a known after five laps to go and they come by this time as Jeff Gordon at 22 years this sensational driver it's so well here a year ago had a brilliant run in this race is coming back [Music] one year ago a second in the [Music] putting a lap on Harry Gant seventh place competitor [Music] like Ganga Swiper - 125 first looking five since Johnny Rutherford in 1963 here tonight at Charlotte north [Music] raise your hand Rusty's paid me he's getting beat like 15 or 20 100 laughs right there he's already settled in [Music] and away from him years of racing [Music] [Music] two laps remaining youngest winners over the years talk about the great [Music] thirty years ago the fireball lost his life in [Music] Bobby Hillin was 22 [Music] and I had to be a merciful [Music] want to go [Music] she's evolving 81.4 390 will become only the fifth driver [Music] checkers are out and they are [Music] this evening on this Memorial weekend at the Charlotte [Music] you know enjoy the conference they did they did the right thing I wouldn't have took a chance on it but they did ernhardt up to congratulate it ain't shaking his fist really [Music] that it's one I think everybody knew that if he was gonna win just didn't know win well it's happened here in this major race of the season the coca-cola 600 belongs to Pittsboro Indiana's Jeff Gordon with a sensational run in the 35th annual coca-cola 600 [Music] Napa we're the most complete to the purolator winner's circle here's Randy Pemberton well Jeff Gordon is taking a few moments gives his fiance Brooke a hug it was very emotional we came in here Jeff Gordon in absolute tears he finally wins his first ever Winston Cup victory here and one of the biggest races of them all the coca-cola 600 let me walk in here and try and get a word with this young man Jeff a fantastic day for you a great call on the pitch you guys deserve to go to Victory Lane great job I'm speechless man I mean this is the greatest day of my life I don't know what to say me you know it's just it's a wonderful feeling but I know so much of this crew I told everybody we weren't gonna be fast at the beginning and then we'd be there when it got dark and lights came on it's exactly what this thing did you know cars named after my fiancee Brooklyn loved her very much and this is just me unbelievable feeling but you know I just I gotta think Rick Hendrick Chevrolet DuPont especially but this crew I mean they made that decision I just drove the wheels off of it but I didn't have to drive it too hard it just did such an excellent job in the pits man that's what wins races being smart being there all day we've been so unlucky lately this is uh this is the only way to make it all worthwhile they said you've had the socks off for jinx all season I know you want to put that behind you give dinner tonight you won one of the biggest races of all time we don't believe in jinx you know we just felt like things were happening that we had no control over and we just kept working hard and working hard had team meetings to get on morale back up and when we ready win some more now this is unbelievable okay get on out of there and celebrate with these people Jeff Gordon fantastic run for Jeff Gordon today in this entire DuPont team watch this Richard I mean this crowd is going to come undo people love this man it ain't not a look at where he goes yeah they are looking for ain't you're what I'm guessing Iran does that they to look into someone well here is the million dollar win for me is it just waiting for him to gather himself up after he gathered this race up and stepped forth from this far number 24k that she's blown how do they go [Applause] I don't think he's in the situations with nobody was pulling against him I thought they might be pulling for their favorite driver I mean like iron whole expand but they say my heart ain't gonna win tonight let's jump on this kind of deal and a lot of times that's what happens and probably what happened a lot two hundred twenty two thousand people the plot thickens in the infield pay their respects twenty two-year-old on comes to originally out of California [Music] let's meet the man he beat tonight the great Rusty Wallace rusty were looking over your shoulder out of what happened in those last laps which could close it really wasn't nothing happened I mean the car was really fast but he put two on we never dreamed he'd do it you know we never even considered him to a true here race to the seven car we put four tires on one out and our plan worked good to seven car took four tires but he put two and I really thought I could run him down and catch him but I couldn't do it the car ran flawless it was perfect it was real strong all throughout the day pit stops were great I like congratulate Allen sir jr. and the whole Penske team for the Indy win today I was thinking pop that thing about the first 50 laps it was wonderful a neat deal but I like to thank Miller mobile Goodyear Fache everybody I mean we had a great run today I told everybody this morning the car was super strong and I believe we led so many laps that was unbelievable so we gained a lot of points and we didn't win but I tried to and you had a good strong run with Earnhardt yeah yeah I guess so you know he he was trying to keep his lap back and it gives lap from me and he was burned his tires up and I was burning my tires I'm trying to get around it but hey all-in-all 600 miles is a long way we had a good run just like to thank entire Team Penske everything went great today Rusty Wallace keeping his chin up Rick Benjamin Rusty Wallace certainly had a lot to be proud of today as did Jeff Gordon we're told Gordon led only 13 laps but the most important third team at the end can't remember the last time we saw a driver win a major race and break out in tears and spontaneous joy and Victory Lane a lot of hats off the young Jeff Gordon for his victory drive tonight now couple of awards to pass out here the liquid wrench slickest move we talked about other drivers perhaps qualifying that slick move certainly goes to Jeff Gordon and Ray Evernham screw and then he leads for Gordon the two-tire stop at the end really set it up now we're also told that the UAW GM teamwork Award of Excellence goes as well to Jeff Gordon's team the Ray Evernham led Rick Hendrick Motorsports entourage knocking that one off as well we also want to tell you about the advanced autoparts pits done quickly award we thought Ricky Rudd might have a chance that three-second stop he made late in the going for gas only we thought that was a slick move too but it gets Ricky and his team the pits done quickly award tonight here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway alfe lots of activity yeah when you consider Richard that until 1990 this kid had never sat in a stock car he'd won in sprints and midgets and all kinds of stuff but he never said in a stock car until 1919 he pulls off this kind of a victory tonight it really speaks for a great future alright that's great you don't want to lay man the big advantage he had over the majority of the people he comes in with the very best equipment but that doesn't take anything away from his ability because he goes out there and proves that he's capable of handling the very best equipment that's what he did all right let's says we take a look at the run downs and I talked to dick Berggren for a moment well Ken it wasn't just a first win for Jeff Gordon it was also a first win for crew chief Ray Evernham this whole team is young and what a wonderful future they have ahead of them Randy well certainly a great call in the pits this is a team sport they made a great call but the driver and the end result has to do it and Jeff Gordon is certainly one of the greatest drivers we have out there may never be another Richard Petty but we may have another Dale Earnhardt standing at Victory Lane there tonight Kenny well guys
