today I'm going to teach you how to play the bass guitar using the number system and some of you guys might be wondering why the number system I already know how to play and isn't that good enough and the answer is yes but some of the advantages is playing to the number system that I believe is number one it's super easy especially on the bass number two it allows you to play any song in any key and that is a very valuable tool especially for worship and number three it is probably the best tool to be able to train your ears and to hear things relative to the key which will tremendously benefit your playing and improvising later on so there's a lot of stuff associated with the number stuff but instead of explaining everything I just want to get started and show you step one the first thing you need to know on the bass guitar in order to start using this great system so here we go I need to show you first of all all the diagrams that you will see fretboard wise is going to be in a certain aspect and it's going to look this way ok so as you can see the fretboard you will see will be exactly like if you were playing the bass guitar and looking down at it so here's the headstock your hands will come over this way that's the fretboard ok so that's kind of the way that I the system that I use and we'll go from there so what I'm going to do is I'm going to put up a picture of the fretboard bass guitar fretboard like that and the number system is basically the major scale that's the doremi foz that's the scale the most common scale so the scale used to create chords explain music theory it's the the main scale out of all the scales and that's basically all it is is a major scale I'm going to show you the simplest way that you can play the major scale and it's great because it's all grouped in one area and I'm going to just draw it this way so let's say we're playing in the key of G so this would be G right there the second note would be here third note would be their fourth note their fifth note right there six notes right there seven notes right there and basically the major scale has seven notes in it and so that is the scale but for the sake of completion I'm going to put an octave of our starting note right there which should be right there so that is the major scale in the key of G now what I want to show you is see what color let's use this color okay if I were to go and number this major scale so that the starting note starts with the number one which is right there so that would be number one second note is right there in the scale that would be number two and so on that would be the third note three this note right there would be a fourth note I'll put it this way this note would be the fifth note of the scale that would be the sixth note of the scale this one would be the seventh note and this note once again I told you that's the octave of the starting note so that could be eight but for for our sake and simplicity sake I'm just going to put it number one because those two are basically the same notes and the major scale sounds you know one doremi facility to-- that's the major scale and if you were to get on your bass right now and play this scale that's exactly what it would sound like and so basically this is the number system it's just the major scale with a number associated with each note now let me go and cap here I'm going to go you race everything that I put down so let's say now you were to create you wanted to play a song in the key of M in a key of C well if you were playing in a key of C you would go to number the C note which is right here and you would start that scale pattern right there so it would look like this that would be one two three four five six seven one it's that simple I'm going to go and erase this put it in a different key let's say you were playing in the key of C sharp C sharp now for this I'm going to instead of putting dots I'm just going to put numbers so we know the scale now and let me just show you what this would look like here's C sharp at least one of the places where C sharp is so number one would be there two would be here three would be right there four would be there five six seven and here would be one so this is the first thing you need to know and so what you should probably do is to memorize this on your bass guitar learn what the fingerings are typically number one here starts with your middle finger this is I think the first position that you learned when you learn this scale but learn it and learn this scale by calling the number out and then in the next lesson I will give you some exercises on how to start using this one pattern to basically start playing music with this right here you can play most of the worship songs that we play and so if you guys are interested learn this and I will show you step two in the next video
