I would Like to see the number of defectors pre Kim Jong ill. Maybe less North Koreans want to escape North Korea? I'm not saying North Korea is a fantastic place to live in, but It definitely seems to be in a better condition under Kim Jong Un than under his father.
The Famine Certainly backed many people into a corner with the only option to attempt to defect, but Id imagine life in NK is better so people are less likely to take the risk. China's heavy investment into surveillance technology may also be a huge factor.
