Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
Dean Smith not winning his first title until 1982 is crazy to think about given the amount of success he had in the first 20 years of coaching at UNC.
And a freshman from Wilmington became a household name.
One of my favorite photos comes from this game. Coach Smith leaning against a wall with a cigarette in hand. James Worthy, sitting, hunched over/praying(?). A net around his neck. Jimmy Black, beside Worthy, in deep thought. It kind of looks like someone just died. Pure exhaustion on so many different levels.
What it actually captured is the moment after they won the championship.
I always look at it and think that's what it takes to get to the top.
Everyone is talking about Duke as a team of destiny but UNC winning it also a compelling story especially if you include this.
Mike Jordan became Michael Jordan
No 3-point line, no ever-present score/stat graphic, the early full court pressure. For some reason, I keep looking for a defensive three second violation.
In many ways, which I don't fully understand and can't elaborate, a very different game than how it is played today.
Watching this (full game, not just highlights) for the first time... wow. The game was so boring back then
There are two national championship games where it seriously jumps out to me looking back on how much NBA-caliber talent was playing β Duke-Arizona in 2001 with Shane Battier, Richard Jefferson, Jay Williams, Gilbert Arenas, Carlos Boozer and Mike Dunleavy Jr. is the other one, but this one with MJ, Patrick Ewing, James Worthy, Sleepy Floyd and Sam Perkins always takes the cake.
I know this is about the 1982 game, but this now reminds me a lot of the 2020 year now. CBS re-played this game and the Virginia-Texas Tech game on what would have been the first weekend of the tournament in 2020. Depressing to think about now.
