Nitto Race of Kings Power Hour at Chocolate Thunder

moment and I just got an update from Chip McLaughlin that Ryan rockhold just blew another engine so he is not going to qualify hopefully he can Source another one and uh he'll take a rear start but I think we're about to go live racing here at chocolate thunder for the Nitto race of Kings qualifier who's gonna be able to bump off Brian cross oh man this is so exciting this is the part of the year I live for let's see what we've got what can Weiland deliver in his Campbell ifs chassis looks like the green flag is up and it's down we are live racing Waylon Campbell trying to chase down Brian cross time to beat up to 27.9 it's going to be a great day this is the most important part of his run he goes wide right he's going to turn left and try to shoot right between those rocks we'll see how it shakes out for Waylon Campbell yeah Waylon's getting caught there Kenny just push that through this is a very similar car to Brian cross vehicle both Campbell chassis both single fizzy RFS and both built by the same hands is he gonna bump off his brother-in-law Brian cross time will tell I think Brian had a little smoother run but Wayland has a great run going this is a you know this could be a top 20 for sure unless he really picks it up yeah at the moment I estimate these around about seven to eight seconds behind Brian at this moment in time so he's gonna have to stand on that skinny pedal if he stands any chance of getting on the top spot so much action yet to come today this is Power Hour the biggest and baddest names of uh in the sport we have all of the reigning Kings we'll be qualifying later on in Power Hour our reigning King right now Rel Gomez will round out the field and look at Hammer town in the background look how amazingly huge this event is and those Campbell cars you cannot mistake them they are so iconic so different to everything else out there on our racecourse Wayland Campbell of course has Podium to this event in the past his father is a three-time king is it time for this young man to go from Prince to King as he makes the turn working his way down to her problem look at my unofficial race clock I can tell you I think he's around about 15 seconds behind Pace right now but it's still a great run he's gone he's about halfway through the mark we'll see how this all shakes out that Waylon Campbell still pushing strong trying to get a good time to start for the Nitto race of Kings coming up on Saturday if you are just joining us this is Power Hour during the 2023 Progressive Insurance King of the Hammers powered by Optima Batteries I just look at these Rock Smiles fantastic images for all drones out in the back of these sand washes and you can see the depth of these routes as Whalen Powers his way up towards us one more sandwash one more sandwashing to be working his way down into idle issues I'm making the suicide drop down towards the timing beam but he's off Pace at the moment right about 20 seconds behind where he needs to be to be a pole sitter but he's still looking strong to be in the top 15. it's going to be a great run by Waylon Campbell he's got about 10 more seconds to go so he's I'm gonna say a top 20 uh a top 20 go at it can you keep it together coming down idle issues and it looks like he is gonna make it safe and sound right around that 244 Mark so that should put him a top 15 or so yes he is in 14th position Waylon Campbell up next number 25. miles this is a UFO single seat IRS and ifs if you look at the back axle it's almost like the rear axle has been cut in half and allowed them to flex in either direction a unique design from Joe Thompson at UFO yeah it's a great car to see his other brothers have brand new cars he's like I'm still gonna run this thing and see what happens he's got a identical uh he bought an identical car for Mike Bergman last year for our pre-runner so they are taking this extremely serious I mean it's fun I caught up with him earlier in the week and chatted with Marcos and he is ready to to shut his brother up they talk so much smack between each other and he's like every meeting we have he always says hey who's the king in this room and he's hoping to pack that up he is indeed his weight watch Pellegrino seventh the happy Pappy Rusty bliler and six is Cody Miller fifth hundred Miller and fourth is Brandon Thompson third Levi Shirley and second is Jason Blanton and the fastest guy of the day so far is Brian cross with that 227 but I believe Vaughn kitten Jr is in here so everything is unofficial right now I still think he'll be in top five absolutely as we are now watching Marquez Gomez there from ballgan Junior as we're watching Cameron Steele in this incredible Triton engineering IRS ifs car belonging to Cody Wagner he's already made his way through the Rocks he's working his way at the Go Trails we are watching Cameron still practicing the other day and this car is just simply unbelievable it has portal axles on each of the hubs which gets extra ground clearance this car has nearly won this race three times maybe he can do it this time I had a fun chat with him about a month ago about this car they have completely rebuilt this laser nut machine with Armada engineering ifs IRS with portals Dugan's race engine just like in his T1 truck a 4L80E Wiseman transfer case raceline BFG PRP Baja HQ fox live Val VP and he is a monster athlete he is in the off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame Cameron seal a great ambassador of off-road great to see him racing every single race except for the four wheel parts every man challenge Cameron Steele is hungry for a win out here at King of Steele No Frills no spills just really good race action out on that track another interesting thing about this car it's one of the very few out here that has a rear winch as well so let's hope he of Brian cross Cameron Steele is on the front line right now up next is the number 44-56 of Brett Harrell with Justin uh from two boards riding shotgun out of Aumsville Oregon with change over this is an old older Paul horsel built 2C ifs machine danzio LS7 750 horsepower two birds turbo 400 Wiseman T case Fox Max tie downs Nitto obstacle trailer ready rigid and TMR he is fresh off his win at the national so last time he raced this car he won we'll see if this Nitto obstacle machine they gotta can make it up chocolate thunder looks like the left front may not have been pulling yeah I was chatting to Brett last night he's super stoked to be here in power hour but I've got a feeling that that left front isn't pulling miles I think you called it right so we're just gonna see what he can do but just looking at the way the car is behaving it doesn't look like that left front is pulling at all so real tough luck here for Brett no there's a visual yep left not sure what's going on there for him tough tough break from Brett Harrell but he's still powering through up and through chocolate thunder he makes it that's impressive stuff in three-wheel drive to work he'll throw it through those rocks but can Brett Harrell bring it to the Finish let's see what he got you can see how the car just wants to dig in miles it doesn't want to provide traction I've got a feeling he's lost the whole front end now tough tough Breakers yeah this is a pretty steep pretty loose little section and if he can't make it up here he's gonna have some problems tough break for Brett Harrell we saw his son Brent Harrell no four-wheel drive right now so he's a two-wheel peel he's entering a burnout contest as we speak he is indeed right now he's a drag racer time to get off our track and that's just goes to show how tough this is his last race he won comes out here barely got 150 yards and he's already in pieces and he like we always talk about Prep Prep you can do absolutely everything perfect at home but there's something about hammers once you get here it throws all the curve balls at you so he's got the window down the window net down he is a frustrated individual tough break for Brett Harrell such a great competitor but hey they'll get it back to Camp they got a few days to uh get that thing fixed and he'll be good you can see Justin gives him the the cut off something's broke up front he knows it so let's run through the top 10 so in 10th position the Lamborghini with gin Wright Jordan Pellegrino in ninth position it's Rusty Viola driving the Miller Pro chassis for Big B Motorsports in eighth position is Cody Miller in that Can-Am UTV and splitting the two brothers is born game Jr in his Ford Bronco and then 100 Miller and sixth spot another Can-Am UTV and then in fifth position is Brendan Thompson in the single seat ifs UFO sitting in four spot Levi and Shirley in that brand new two-seat Euro Fighter then if the position is Jason Blanton in that huge comedy-engined I'm Jimmy's ifs car and then in second spots on the front row for now is Mr Cameron Steele and that beautiful laser nut monster machine and then all pole sitter still in his Campbell chassis is Brian Crofts this is a man who loves qualifying and he's throwing it down here again today said to everyone in Power Hour this is what I've got have you got anything for me and right now they have not but we've still got some big names to come we still got Paul Herschel we saw a Tom ways Paul wolf Lauren Healey Eric Miller Shannon Campbell Jason Shearer Josh Byler Randy Slawson and last year's King Raul Gomez what a great great power hour we have right now that is an absolutely stacked field and I was speaking about Power Hour I was able to catch up with Tom ways a few days ago so let's see what Tom Waits has to say so I'm here with Mr Tom ways I get asked all the time who can win this race and I say a current King for sure but you know what your name always comes up you've been this close what's gonna take oh having a good clean day I think would be really helpful I think the more Rock Trails the harder Rock Trails it'll definitely help for someone with a good rock crawling background so I think it's going to be tough for everybody but um so you you like the harder Trail I mean you talk about ifs versus straight axle and usually rocks favor the straight axle but you're excited about the ifs car out there I think ifs cars are great in the Rocks I think the misconceptions that ifs cars aren't great and their Ox comes from cars that are really big and really wide which mines neither so okay all right I like that it's more of the size of the car I think that makes a difference in hammers I mean there's some places that it might be a little more unstable but this thing's little so it's not really like a huge wide car so some side Hill stuff in Rock Trails is more stable because the chassis doesn't move okay with an ifs car um there's some things I've straight axle cars can definitely do better in the Rocks I mean I think I don't know I think there's legitimate 15 20 guys that are that are legitimately fast now that can win this thing and yeah you should just be a handful now yeah like yourself I think you have to be pretty cold-hearted to come up come to only go to 15. and yeah and you're right on that for sure and you're hurting people's feelings if they heard you say that list they'd want to choke you out yeah that's why I don't talk we'll just leave that alone but no seriously though I think my car feels great not being proud if I'm if it's going to be time to pull rope we're gonna we're gonna winch my worn work screen for that it's all those things I'm going to try to drive it like I don't want to work on it but hard to save the car and then it was a couple of years ago you and I were chatting and you were we were talking about average time last year's speed average speed yeah last year it was Raul right around 33 miles per hour there's more more Rock Trails so I think that'll go down a little bit but you really got me thinking average speed that's a big deal to talk about no average speeds everything in this race and it's something that really hasn't been talked about and I know I pushed on you hard yeah to pay attention to it but what's interesting is like you can only go so fast up Rock Trails so okay now how fast you're gonna go down Rock Trails and like I remember a few years ago I was doing like look down I'm doing like 20 25 going down chocolate thunder and then you look down and you're like okay I'm going eight miles an hour up spooners and you're like really and then 130 across the lake exactly so you can only go with that fast for me anyway until I hit my drive shaft and then I have to slide to slow down a little bit you know it's always fun catching up with the one and only it's always fun catching up with Mr come ways what a great Channel I always have with him but off the line right now back to line racing is Paul horsel with Mitchell Swift number 19 out of Park City Utah with horsel Motorsports he's been fine-tuning this car all year long he debuted it here at king of hammers one year ago this is a horsel built 2C ifs and IRS Ford Bronco with rear steering the anzio P600 big block 967 horsepower gearworks turbo 400 8 scstk spider tracks Nitto PRP fox live valve Trail Ready Wheels obstacle TMR Nitto rigid tube Works PCI RCV worn ARB and a power tank Paul horsel is a genius behind the scenes but he puts a helmet on he's an absolute animal and he makes really quick work going up chocolate thunder yeah pool shot a great Pace there really did put the schooling on those rocks but what's he got can he hold it together this car is amazing proper crazy scientist stuff the rear wheel stair is has to be seen to be believed he launched this car last year had some minor problems that kept him from finishing has he got what it takes this year to bring it home he has led this race on so many occasions laying down fantastic times usually failing or something happening on lap two that puts him out can he string together the perfect race this time here of the 2023 Progressive Insurance King of the Hammers Paul horschel is one of those people just like Tom Wayne's any current King can win for sure but those two names always get brought up in the conversation and that's why they are in Power Hour Paul horsel with a great run and that car is probably one of the most advanced cars out there like I said it's got rear steer it's got the line valve this car is absolutely amazing and he's going to be pushing just right around a thousand horsepower yeah and if you look under the front of this car look at the incredible amount of ground clearance that he has he's just pushing hard now working it through he's a little bit behind Pace right now I predicted looking at this he's around about 30 seconds behind where he needs to be but he's not worried about that he just needs to get on those front rows of the grid so remember this race will be on adjusted time on Saturday so even though if you start mid-pack which he's going to be up front for sure but uh you're racing yourself even though every car is on the course at the same time you're starting two at a time side by side 30 second increments so starting mid-pack you'll have that uh that time on your side as we see all horsel coming down idle issues so he'll be I'm gonna say about that 15th to 20 spot we'll see how it sticks out yeah I'm also I think it's gonna be a little bit uh somewhere around that I think you are absolutely right there but what you'll see is he crosses the line we wait to get a time for Paul Herschel uh Paul Herschel comes in in 14th position with a 243.39 and earlier on we saw Waylon Campbell he's currently in 17th position with a 247. and taking off the line right now the number three two one of Tom ways with Brian Trotter riding shotgun out of Olympic Valley California with Tom ways racing he's in a get bit Fab two-seat ifs chassis Red Line showfield LS7 gearworks turbo 400 Atlas spider tracks icon BFG Baja Designs Warren cnh motor park and FK his first king of hammers was back in 0-8 great to see Tom ways still racing strong with us yeah it's all making sure work on the Rocks there picking his way onto the goat trials and making his way up to the ridge line Tom is so popular out here has fans around the world world renowned for his task which is now missing has he got it takes will the new styling make him faster it's going to be hard to tell there's a stacked field I've got a great story from Tom Waits my first year on the live show is back in 2012 and we're right here up at chocolate thunder I was with Jim holtis at the time and he comes up over idle issues and then stops right here at the bottom right where the start line is he had a Jeep bass machine back then he had a Driveline issue I crawled under the car while he's working on it crazy to drive shaft I interviewed him and I was being a fanboy ever since Tom Waits is a man on a mission yeah we saw his old car being driven by Ron pandor today I believe that's still sitting inside the top 20 yes it is in 19th Place so what can Tom do in his all-new car when I say all new it's around about three years old now built by Keith Bim from get Ben off-road Fab a man who has designed so many of the machines that are out here this weekend and we'll see another one shortly on track when we see Jason Shira in his brand new car very similar frame design two Tom ways but a more modern version as we watch Tom picking his way through the wash making his way towards us and idle issues he'll be cruising through that fast little sandwash section really uh stretching his legs here and we'll have him coming down idle issues in just a little bit so he's gonna be I'm gonna say in that top 30 spot uh and he's fast in the desert so adjust the time we'll be on his time Saturday morning this is the Nitto race of King's qualifier during the 2023 Progressive Insurance King of the Hammers powered by Optima batteries Palm ways is coming down idle issues a little off base but like I said he'll still be top 20's top 30 I believe Jim this is Power Hour and this is what it's all about yeah this is a car that is designed for King of the Hammers and Thomas matured over his years as a racer he used to be the man to be unqualifying now he just likes to get in nice and safe in a good position and he's we're just waiting to see where he qualifies and we're watching all of this we're up the field waiting to go it's a stack field of talent here we're looking at Paul wolf now now Paul wolf won the Holly EFI shootout last night [Music] and leaving the line now is Paul Wolfe we saw him racing this track last night and he destroyed the opposition what can he do Tom Waits at the tricky spot and Target thunder in a single seat UFO he one shots it makes it right up so Paul wolf with a new race number of 10-18 out of Brighton Illinois with wolf racing in a 2018 UFO single seat ifs LSX 434 ato4l80e scst case raceline Wheels Nitto spider tracks rat flow rugged Hollies RCB and branic his first race in The 4400 class was last year in Moab he got first place his first time ever racing 4400 we'll see what he's got he's the man on a mission yeah Paul wolf is winning just about everything right now in fact about the only thing he hasn't won in recent times is King of the Hammers can he do it this year can he do it this year will this be his time to shine King of the Hammers look at the pace of this guy as he drives this UFO single seat ifs car across the top of the Ridgeline making his way down to the to the right hand turn heading down towards her problem and look at the time miles I think this could be a really close to Brian cross Brian cross I know you're watching I know you're excited I know you're nervous Paul wolf is gunning for you buddy he is all over the throttle up on that Ridge he was catching some air time really making it happen Paul wolf named his race team after his daughter's birthday I absolutely love the family affair out here everybody's family first everybody loves uh racing with their their whole family out here enjoying King of the Hammers yes Paul wolf who's been into it together a fantastic time one more sand wash before he makes his way down into idle issues and look at this pace this is on top position Pace can he take our pole set up Brian cross off the top spot he's entering into Idol issues he's completely sideways hits a huge Rock oh Paul hold it together he's at less than two minutes as he's coming down this is looking like a new fastest time miles I think he's gonna beat by five seconds or so Paul wolf is going to be the new pole Setter if I'm not mistaken remember everything is unofficial but I believe Paul wolf just stole the lead away from Brian Crofts we'll see I don't have timing yet but Paul wolf just threw down a blistering pace great great job for Paul wolf and as we wait for a time for Paul wolf I can tell you that Tom way is qualified in 18th position with a 248. and off the line now is a man who needs no introduction it is Lauren Healy and Lauren Healy is making his way up through the rocks at chocolate thunder and as Lauren Healey Powers his Ford Bronco through the Rocks I can tell you that Brian cross is officially now second and Paul Wolfe is our current race leader with a 2 18. so almost 10 seconds faster than uh Brian cross ball wolf our new polls that are absolutely amazing so on screen right now is Lauren Healy and Jesse Amex number 67 out of Farmington New Mexico with fun have her off-road team and a Triton engineering two seat ifs and IRS Bronco performance 460 D3 Jeff Ginter race engine 780 horsepower gearworks turbo 400 Atlas spider tracks two burst RCV 74 weld portals fox live valve Centerline Wheels Nitto monster Optima mbrp rugged Pennzoil project lights Recaro seats RTR vehicles and NGK so the two-time king is trying to make it happen yeah this car is more of a spaceship than a car there is so much technology in this vehicle the fox live valve suspension talks to the brakes it talks to the engine it talks to the transmission changing the shock valving over a thousand times a second as he's on the course it's incredible technology what can he do here it has portable hubs on the front it has portal hubs on the rear it has IRS on the rear and ifs on the front and look at the place of this car miles Lauren's got a great run going but is he gonna be able to catch up with Paul wolf Paul wolf just threw down an amazing amazing run getting the new pole Setter with a two 18-7 4-6 what a great run and an interesting thing I'm seeing right now Eric Miller is not in the lineup for Power Hour I heard he had issues and uh the trail legit yes the front end he blew the front end completely apart so obviously they're still having some issues getting him back together I know they'll make it happen but it looks like he is going to miss qualifying so I believe two-time King Eric Miller will take a rear start yeah that's a tough luck for Eric Miller he loves this race so much commits his year to it as Lauren Healey comes over the top I don't think he's got place for Paul wolf but I think he has got a possible pace for a second place and a front row on the grid what can Lauren do as he works his way down through idle issues I love this Bronco miles it's an absolutely beautiful car he's got to cross the line what's he got what a great run like we were talking about Von's car earlier they're almost identical except for uh Vaughn has a straight axle Lauren has a IRS on it so Lauren Haley moves into the second row in fourth position with a 2 30. so Lauren Healy sitting in fourth spot so off the line next off-road Hall of Famer number five Shannon Campbell out of Gilbert Arizona with Campbell racing he's in the dragon slayer a single seat ifs Campbell chassis proper tuning ls490 huge turbo 400 hero TK's Curry axles ARB Monster Energy method race wheels Nitto Fox impact seats Warren motive gear Amsoil rugged RCV power tank and Trail worthy Fab Shannon Campbell is up and through chocolate thunder oh look at this man go Shannon Campbell he never says no never says and does not understand the word surrender the pace of this man as he works his way through chocolate thunder is absolutely inspirational can he do something special here today miles I think he's gonna have a great great run we'll see how it shakes out we've got a coming to a stop I see the lights flickering at the front of the vehicle perhaps it's cut out it's hard to tell can only guess at this stage but he had an astonishing run going here Mars and when you come to a complete stop you no that's not good remember he's all by himself out there as well he has no co-driver to help him so tough break for a three-time king off-road hall of famers Shannon
