when it comes to 3d mario games galaxy 2 is kind of like that abandoned fourth child that nintendo didn't really want to have don't worry galaxy 2 i'm coming back with that milk mostly everyone liked the original and well we ain't got nothing else so let's just hit that good old copy and paste releasing in 2010 for the wii we got all the same stuff that made the original memorable the planets the music the motion controls and well we gotta add something new so here's yoshi everyone loves yoshi and you know what for as blatantly lazy as the game's concept is it went over well selling a little over half of what the original did with many including myself in some areas at least preferring it over the original it was a great game so why does nintendo hate it so much yeah i know it can seem a bit out there and like what is this guy talking about this is one of the biggest mario games like ever but thinking about it why doesn't it get referenced nearly as often as other games in the series why wasn't it included in mario's 35th anniversary collection when the original was like come on it couldn't have been that difficult why was the 3ds version ever released why was the wait 3ds version what it turns out mario galaxy 2 has a much more storied history than you may expect kinda ironic for a game without a story huh a game that was originally planned to be entirely different in concept contains some more controversial content and maybe even be on a completely different console super mario galaxy 2 as it exists today was not supposed to happen and through uncovering the story behind it we can gain a much clearer perspective of why nintendo might wish it didn't either and i think it can all be traced back to one game a game that funnily enough would never actually come out but that's besides the point this is super mario 128. now what is this you may be asking sounds like the name of literally every mario fan game ever but this is actually part of a stash of files that nintendo probably wishes to cover up and if we're gonna be getting into classified info like this the nintendo ninjas are gonna be coming after me this video is gonna need some backup we're sponsored by dungeon fighter online a 2d mo rpg with retro pixel graphics where you can join action-packed raids and dungeons with players all over the world and like galaxy 2 the story of this game is pretty interesting too dfo is literally one of the highest grossing games of all time it's been played by more than 850 million people yeah and i think i know the reasons why like a true action game dfo showcases spectacular hit effects and complex combos with beautiful illustrations and animations for each class but i think the key to this game's longevity though comes from the constant updates hopefully better than this way of doing updates the new level cap update is here it's going to be increased from 100 to 110 and with this max level increase the main storyline will progress and new areas and dungeons will now be revealed but the best part is if you download the game with my link in the description and use the code you can get 10 life tokens 50 of remy sparkling touch and a funky avatar set that includes a hat face torso and bottom you're definitely not going to want to miss this click the link in the description below check out dungeon fighter online and i'll see you there yes super mario 64 the first 3d mario game was actually gonna have a sequel to it much closer in name i mean with nintendo's amazing reputation in this regard would it really shock you bro imagine if this came out and all the youtube speculation videos nowadays would be clamoring for like mario 81 92 or something at e3 1996 just after mario 64's development completed series creator and now officially titled head nintendo creative fellow no i'm not joking shikara miyamoto revealed that a sequel's development was already underway and would likely only take a year and a half to complete they had many other ideas that they wanted to implement and would try to utilize more than 64's capabilities hopefully not being too ambitious though things would go quiet for a while however giving these scarily similar vibes to the whole pikmin 4's quote almost done development situation but unlike that game we'd at least get an update here with miyamoto later saying that it was still in development but they wanted to finish zelda 64 first now this made some sense why do two mario games first instead of one of each especially since it was set to only take about six months to complete which ended up turning into a year and a half yeah this unexpected twist of events likely completely changed the course of 3d mario history as the fabled super mario 128 project stayed sitting on his desk for all that time some thought at this point that it wasn't actually real we'd wait and wait and wait but finally at space world 2000 in japan a new prototype for the game was shown that without knowing it at the time would probably be the biggest catalyst behind why super mario galaxy 2 is in the strange state that it is today this game had 128 mario's running around the game board grabbing blocks and pushing each other off it looked ambitious but could have been thought of as a tech demo to show off the capabilities of the gamecube since well too much time passed for this to be on the n64 now huh but nintendo reassured fans that it was still gonna be an actual game and not just an experimental project which some would believe until pikmin came out while the fourth new entry may never actually happen the first one received much praise for the innovative concept of throwing these lovable creatures onto the wacky enemies of the world who uh maybe aren't as lovable but the reason i mentioned this is pikmin was heavily inspired by mario 128's idea of having a bunch of characters on screen with this being the case along with a completely different 3d mario game releasing in 2002 with sunshine doubt crept into the minds of fans hoping for this mario 64 sequel until rumors were circulating about it appearing at e3 2003. yes this same kind of rumor mill was still going on back then at least without all the click bait videos though gotta love that if the multiple characters concept of this showcase was already being used with pikmin then what was left for a new mario game speculation ran rampant but even after all the build up it still never appeared this seemed like the last hope for fans and miyamoto needed to address it especially after all the teasing and all the rumors were circulating but what he said took everyone by surprise miyamoto said that mario 128 was actually still being made as a direct sequel to mario 64. but its ideas would be so revolutionary that they wanted to keep them hidden from the public what that is pretty bold what ideas could have been so ambitious that they need to be hidden so secretly look man i hate plagiarism as much as the next guy but nintendo may have been overreacting here i know at that time they were just getting out of the console wars with the super nintendo and sega genesis and they may have feared a new 3d platformer would try to compete with mario just as sonic did in 2d you know before he dipped his toe into 3d gaming oh that went so well but there had to be something else about this game that was really revolutionary it couldn't have been just this what was it well throughout the various interviews that have been gathered surrounding this game miyamoto mentioned that adding more enemies which would react to mario's attacks in more unique ways would be an idea i mean sunshine kinda already did that but okay fair they wanted to add yoshi as well oh well sunshine already had that too i mean it wouldn't really be a surprise anymore implementing luigi in some form was an idea too but he's mainly just a palette swap that's not really big enough of an idea to be so secretive about a game that you couldn't even have a trailer for it come out more dynamic camera angles well i mean after sunshine this amazing camera work i could certainly see that being one kidding aside though it's clear that while these features are cool and all something clearly went wrong in this game's development as after years and years of nothing more about mario 128 miyamoto would finally give up on the project after being shown a prototype of mario moving around on a similar type of platform to the space world showcase except this was a planet instead a concept that would eventually morph into super mario galaxy oh yeah and it's with this game where i truly believe that we see so many of these truly secretive ideas come to life we got almost all those things they reported but there seemed to be so much planned that just one game wasn't enough we needed more super mario galaxy while being pretty experimental was a great success like any game it has its haters but like odyssey in the modern day there's so much about the game's concept that just leaves fans wanting more mario is in space now he can do pretty much anything there's no limits and the fan art no not that fan art and ideas crafted by the community were truly a sight to behold and for nintendo not only would they have the potential here to finally implement many of the ideas they've had in their back pocket since the n64 days but also make a ton of money in the process something they really like to focus on today and it's because of this success that miyamoto and the team originally wanted to release an updated version of this game called super mario galaxy more also referred to at times as super mario galaxy 1.5 oh god i'm getting scary kingdom hearts title vibes from this i don't know if 1.5 or 128 would have been worse the plan was to re-release the same game with some reworked levels hopefully this one was included in there along with the scrapped ideas from the original galaxy game which in turn likely came from mario 128 but as development progressed and new ideas were generated the concept was expanded into a full-blown sequel which was a first for the 3d mario series but why well it's pretty simple really and no i don't believe it's their official reasoning of oh we just had so many ideas that we needed to do a sequel i think it's just that nintendo wasn't really up to date in the online department back in the wii era if you even consider them up to date today is up to you but that's besides the point they probably figured that it would be too difficult to distribute the dlc for this game to the player base online and releasing the dlc physically in the 1.5 style as an upgraded version of the game wouldn't make much sense either as you just cut off sales for the original that's already on the shelves who's gonna buy that one when the definitive version is sitting right beside it and you know nintendo ain't doing no price drops and even so the concept of a direct sequel was already shown to have worked with 2d mario japan got super mario bros 2. the third version for all regions was called mario 3. it was only with mario world that the name convention changed but even that game got a direct sequel it was shown to work back in the day and with the idea to make a sequel to new super mario bros for the wii it was only natural to give galaxy a similar treatment but this sequel releasing for the wii may not have been the original plan super mario galaxy ds has got to be one of the biggest urban legends in series history it may not have gotten as much attention as l is real or those amazing hotel mario cut scenes god i still have nightmares but the idea of this game releasing for nintendo's biggest portable console of the time period after the wii edition made some sense in concept give fans a chance to play a new 2d mario on the wii and now give him that same galaxy experience on the ds you have something for everyone on both consoles i mean they could even try to rework the mario 64 ds engine to make things a bit easier for the development of galaxy on the ds and in late 2007 we finally got the trailer it went viral showing off mario galaxy running on a different console with this game making so much of an impact that it's still played today sometimes preferred by fans to the wii edition except there's one problem with this game it doesn't actually exist the popular trailer of mario galaxy ds was created by a fan for a school project to make a video go viral and uh yeah this is more effort for a project than i've ever seen and potentially being inspired by this some passionate fans would create a working homebrew edition of mario galaxy for the ds years later while not being entirely complete there are several galaxies from the game that can actually run on a ds which is just insane the amount of time and effort that had to have been put into this is crazy like they say life imitates art and yes nintendo actually considered putting a sequel to galaxy on a ds type console just not the original a prototype of super mario galaxy 2 is confirmed to have been crafted for the 3ds yeah nintendo revealed in interviews after the release of the console that they did indeed test the possibility of releasing galaxy 2 on the 3ds but they had to later nix any potential plans due to it being far too difficult to enjoy according to the company galaxy 2's graphics made mario look like a speck on the 3ds screen which seems to make some sense if you just straight zoom the game out and put it on that small screen it's just uh these fan concepts seem to make it work okay i don't really get that excuse if it's indeed legitimate but this failure to get the galaxy sequel to work on the 3ds hardware was said to be massively influential on the development of 3d land as they specifically designed the terrain for this game around a larger mario interestingly enough they said quote if we were making a console game from the very start we wouldn't have been thinking about any of those things and i think the game would have probably been a lot different and galaxy 2 going to the wii and not the new nintendo console certainly was an impactful decision as we'll see in a little bit the game was indeed planned to be much different the crossover idea made sense in theory and it was even tested but in the end it wasn't feasible to nintendo and the wii was the simpler and easier choice but could you imagine if this actually happened what perfect symmetry it would be the ds opens with a newer version of an old 3d mario game and the 3ds would as well the level design and concepts would have assuredly changed but this still would have been a galaxy experience on the go and while i definitely don't mind 3d land at all it's great in its own way i think i know what i would have liked to have seen more if given the choice but galaxy 2's console entirely being changed despite being a massive deal only scrapes the surface of the cut content that we'd see some being pretty controversial at that and as we get it get into the final editions cut ideas we're gonna gain a much clearer perspective of why the game wasn't supposed to happen and maybe why it's not placed into the spotlight so much today super mario galaxy 2 believe it or not was actually thought to be designed in the 3d system of majora's mask yeah seriously if you're unaware the zelda 64 that miyamoto was working on back then would eventually finish and releases ocarina of time the first 3d zelda game another which would go on to be incredibly successful receiving a passionate fan base so much so that we need a sequel also since it took so long to develop the engine for this game so we better get our money's worth but because of development constraints the decision was made for this game to just use one smaller game world that would have aspects reset every three days in game to save time pun absolutely intended and ironically enough this idea had the exact opposite effect on galaxy 2's development likely because of the several planets that would need to be created for this to work the dave system wasn't considered feasible for galaxy 2 and was scrapped early on in the game's development but this shows more than anything else i feel that galaxy 2 was intended to be completely different than how it turned out i mean the game didn't even turn out to be remotely close to that system well except for the rock mario power-up which they totally stole from the game but don't worry nintendo we'll forget about that many other ideas that they had from the past did make it in though yes yoshi did return we got the mega-like boss fight which was apparently inspired by a scrapped concept for ganondorf's ocarina of time boss battle which is pretty interesting but an idea that was planned but definitely didn't make it in was the torii modi a purple blob creature with a model that's fully animated in everything unlike some others like the bully from mario 64 which was found in the code but for some reason we never saw this enemy why seems like a simple enemy concept i mean if this can be accepted i don't know why not right well its name appears to be a play on tori mochi the japanese word for bird lime a sticky substance used to trap birds considered to be very controversial in some parts of the world even being illegal in the eu since 2021 now we've seen some characters with controversial origins slipped through before without much of a trace but it's kind of understandable why nintendo would want to refrain from this they have had enough other controversies to deal with over the years and don't want any part of it it just makes you wonder though if enemies with controversial concepts like this were actually fully developed what types of enemies were just left in the drafts you know like anything could have really been on the table here it's not only enemies that galaxy 2 rejected but also some cameo appearances donkey kong and pikmin characters were planned to be included in the game somewhere but that didn't end up happening i'm kind of bummed about not seeing it but i just want to know like how would donkey kong swing on a vine in outer space like how would the gravity work there now i mentioned the motion controls before and while i joke about them being completely honest i think they worked well in galaxy even though not having them be optional is completely dumb but did you know they actually planned on increasing the amount that motion controls would be needed for the sequel believe it or not yeah kinda ironic considering the planned 3ds version would have had to omit them entirely but i guess they figured hey if we're going to be on the wii might as well just go all out right in the e3 trailer for the game you're shown to be able to swipe away fireballs shot by king caliente in his boss fight which is not possible in the final release many more ideas were apparently considered but thankfully removed look i'm not a motion control hater okay i play splatoon the right way and i think that mario party mini games with them just make the experience that much more fun but there's definitely a time and place for them and the original had a pretty good balance going too much more than that's about to turn playing mario galaxy into a full-blown workout but in the end these ideas didn't make the cut galaxy 2 would be released be received relatively positively by fans becoming the number one emulated game in the world for two years straight which i thought was pretty funny and when mario's 35th anniversary came around and we got all the rumors of a 3d mario anniversary collection fans got excited to see it once more the videos are still up on the channel that i made back then speculating about possible new features that we get in these remakes would they add new levels and concepts this could be a pretty big deal but then the actual reveal happened oh okay it's not really a remake it's just a port of these games i mean okay that's not ideal but the rumors kind of set our expectations higher i guess it's still fine but if these are just ports kind of strange to leave galaxy's sequel out of it right seems like an easy way to add more value to the game and maybe get some extra sales from people who are on the fence i mean even the original super mario all stars contained 4 games back in the day it would make total sense to add 4 here as a nice callback but they didn't is it possible nintendo just forgot that galaxy 2 existed that seems unlikely but maybe a better theory is that just any game with a two in the name isn't getting focused on anymore the nostalgic medley that plays at the end of the 35th anniversary broadcast omitted several of the other mainline mario games including new super mario bros 2 the lost levels aka mario 2 in japan and super mario land 2 the six golden coins this could be the actual reason although it doesn't really explain why new super mario bros u was excluded but hey it's close enough it just seems like this game isn't treated as completely separate from the original in nintendo's eyes not different enough to completely justify putting it on the boxstart people won't care if we leave out galaxy 2 because it just looks the same as the original galaxy yeah there's plenty of new there to enjoy plenty of fun to be had that was in the planning stages for years and years but there was supposed to be so much more possibilities of a complete game style overhaul a console change and more all for it to just basically be an expansion of the original an expansion which could have literally just been dlc or a definitive edition had nintendo's internet been up to date back then it didn't seem like a priority for them to add even though it could have been really easy might as well just save the effort and the storage space on the cartridge at the same time to encourage more digital downloads ah it's only gonna be available for a limited time anyway who is even gonna remember us leaving it out well i guess that's what this video is for huh super mario odyssey 2 seems inevitable yet many fans still clamor for that third galaxy to this day it might just have something to do with how even though all those features they had in the pipeline for years did eventually make it many did not is it time to finally see the new portable edition after all this it would be interesting if this actually happened though to see it all traced back to a fake leak for the ds kind of reminds me of the times that nintendo actually leaked their own games on purpose yeah it doesn't seem to make much sense but it actually happened and it turned into one of the most controversial incidents in nintendo history you're going to want to find out the real reasons why nintendo leaked their own game multiple times some of the stories being more tragic than you may think
