in 2005 three QBs finished up their college careers and prepared for the NFL draft Timmy Chang finished his illustrious career at Hawaii with over 17 000 passing yards this set the all-time NCAA Division 1A record the 2003 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White wrapped up his time at Oklahoma as one of the most decorated Sooners of all time after winning the Davey O'Brien award twice and leading Oklahoma to consecutive National Title appearances white finished his college career as the school's all-time leading passer lastly we have Matt Castle who never started a single game at USC and didn't have a single Collegiate touchdown now of these three only one of them went on to be selected in the 2005 NFL draft and I think you know where I'm going with this Matt Castle the seventh round rookie out of U.N quarterback the the play of Castle has been kind of interesting uh this year that's his career yes at USC there are a number of traits that are important when looking for an NFL quarterback but perhaps the most sought after is physical traits in preparation for the 1979 NFL draft NFL coaches flew out to relatively unknown Moorhead State to watch a quarterback who put up mediocre stats for a small school that lost a lot more than they won why that's because the young Phil Sims had major physical potential despite his college struggles he went on to be selected early in the first round that year this was met with immediate skepticism from fans and media alike but in the end it eventually worked out Sims went on to become a two-time Super Bowl champion now even though Sims wasn't spectacular in college at least he started multiple years this was enough time for Phil to show some leadership skills along with his physical attributes for the premise of this video it's incredibly rare to find NFL quarterbacks who barely played in college you have to remove almost every category of scouting outside of physical potential no matter what experience almost always matters but in the case of the NFL sometimes potential can Trump this in 2023 Anthony Richardson has been the subject of debate in regards to this topic he was selected fourth overall by the Colts despite only starting 13 college games and even then his performance at Florida was a mixed bag at best former NFL quarterback Trent delpher who spent a decade diving deep into NFL draft quarterback classes thinks this trend of drafting inexperienced college quarterbacks is a cause for concern he even went as far as to tell Mitch trubisky who started the same amount of college games as Richardson that he wasn't ready when he left for the NFL later in this article by the athletic Dilfer describes that the quarterback position is also more than just snaps and starts quote its meetings locker room Dynamics media fan engagement being booed and being cheered being the quarterback has the biggest burden of any player if you don't have a lot of reps of being quarterback and all that entails it can overwhelm you when it's your profession a good example of a guy getting way over hyped despite the lack of experience was Cardell Jones back in 2014 he started the year as the third stringer at Ohio State then this dude went on the most improbable three and a half game Run leading Ohio State to a national championship Victory Scouts immediately gawked at the site of this six foot five 250 pound tank Trucking Bama defenders in the open field and hitting deep bombs down the sidelines this resulted in some NFL Executives giving Cardell draft grades as high as a top 10 or 15 pick in the upcoming draft Cardell literally had a press conference to announce that he was coming back to school instead of going to the NFL despite only starting three games the following year the hype died down a bit and Cardell went in the fourth round around a buffalo this was still mostly off its potential and when he got to the NFL he only appeared in one game before finding himself out of the league now for the rest of this video's Focus I only have two names to discuss in more depth and neither of them were high draft picks due to the complete lack of playing time they had in college the first we'll talk about is Brad Johnson arriving at Florida State in 1987 the 6'4 Brad Johnson was a member of both the basketball and football team Johnson played on the basketball team until 1989 then decided at that point it would be best to be focused on football throughout its first three years Johnson was the third string quarterback and served as the team's placeholder on kicks then entering his fourth year on campus which was his wretcher Junior season Johnson had finally won the starting quarterback job but after just six games he was benched following back-to-back losses with the backup Casey Weldon the team did not lose another game in 90. being benched is tough for everybody no matter the circumstances especially when you waited four years for your opportunity only to go back to the sidelines what was interesting was Johnson didn't necessarily play that bad the coaches just wanted to get a spark going offensively and the other quarterback just started balling out one cool thing that did come from this though was somehow Brad had a buddy who ran into Larry Bird and after his friend told Larry Bird about Brad Johnson's situation at FSU bird wrote him a letter offering him some words of encouragement this gave Johnson a boost of confidence but it didn't result in him getting more playing time during his final year in college Johnson rode the bench all but one game caping off his Five Seasons at FSU with seven total starts the real issue for Brad wasn't his level of Play Rather the other quarterbacks there were just really good the guy who took over for him Casey Weldon ended up finishing as the Heisman runner-up in 1999 1. Scouts and coaches recognize this and in the ninth round of 1992 essentially as an undrafted free agent by today's standards Brad Johnson was selected and my dad and I were sitting in my dorm room and it came across the ticker my dad went he got excited I'm like what would happen what happened and he said Brad I think he just got drafted I said what we waited another minute for the ticket to come through seen as a low risk high potential player Brad Johnson served as the Vikings third Stringer in 1992 and 1993. he was promoted to backup behind Warren Moon in 1994 where he played his first career NFL snaps in four years Brad Johnson managed to do enough to stay on the roster but that was about it it was in 1995 when he decided to go overseas during the Spring and play in the world league he credits his later successes to this move puts it up in the air he's looking for Larry Wallace he's got him touchdown in 1996 Brad Johnson got his first opportunity to start for the Vikings in relief of the injured Warren Moon and he quickly proved why he deserved to be there [Applause] in just that one season Johnson had started more games in the NFL than he ever did in college in 1997 the Vikings named him the starting quarterback moving forward what Brad Johnson had accomplished to that point was truly rare about as rare as completing a pass to yourself for a touchdown Johnson pulls him down [Applause] ultimately he lasted 17 years in the NFL he made two pro bowls as well the second of which was with Tampa Bay in 2002 and that year Brad Johnson helped them win the Super Bowl not bad at all for a guy who was benched in college okay now let's move on to the last quarterback in this video we have a guy who is truly in a league of his own in regards to this topic and that would be Matt Castle arriving at USC in 2001 Matt Castle was considered a prestigious quarterback prospect at 6'4 he was the number eight ranked quarterback of his class according to ESPN when he arrived on USC's campus Pete Carroll had just been hired and with the starter Carson Palmer they turned USC from a struggling program to pac-10 Champions by 2002 while Castle was on the sidelines Carson Palmer won the Heisman Trophy and helped lead USC to an Orange Bowl victory in 2003 after Carson Palmer had left for the NFL Bell a quarterback battle ensued between Matt Castle and the younger Matt lineart which lionar ended up winning this is the reality of competitive Sports especially at these massive Blue Blood universities every guy they get is a prized recruit so some of them are going to ride the bench and in the pre-transfer portal days the idea of transferring wasn't as enticing since you had to sit out a year and nothing is ever guaranteed so Matt Castle decided to stay and wait for his opportunity but that chance never came line art played amazingly and never got hurt so in four years Castle's playtime at USC amounted to a handful of snaps mostly in garbage time he has since jokingly remarked that he was the second best quarterback in the country during those years considering he sat behind two Heisman Trophy winners funny enough Castle did spend time at tight end receiver and on special teams in 2003 just trying to find playing time anywhere he could now now following his college career he asked the coaches if he could be allowed to work out at the 2005 USC pro day at first they questioned why he was doing it but they allowed it but nonetheless I said the hell with all of it I'm gonna get myself ready I'll tell you what the castle Cannon was out on full display baby I didn't miss but one throw that day one of his college coaches Norm Chao had left USC to become the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans because he had worked so closely with Castle he was considering bringing him in as an undrafted free agent but to the surprise of Chao he learned that the Patriots had drafted him in the seventh round pretty wild to think that castle backed up the best college quarterbacks and now after not starting a single college game was going to back up one of the best NFL Quarterbacks but nothing was guaranteed and he still had to make the team and after beating out veterans Chris Redmond and Rohan Davey in training camp castle made the Patriots roster in 2005 as the team's third Stringer funny enough Matt Castle not only saw playtime as a rookie but he also threw two touchdowns in the team's final regular season game in just his second appearance in an NFL game this dude had more touchdowns in the pros than his entire college career he would go on to be Brady's backup for the next few seasons until 2008 when everything changed after the Patriots had the greatest regular season by a team that we had ever seen MVP Tom Brady tore his ACL in the preseason and was ruled out for the entirety of 2008. this meant the keys to one of the most prolific offenses ever assembled were being handed to a guy who hadn't started a game since high school that's absolute Madness in Brady's Place Castle certainly didn't play at the same level but he did decent going 10-5 as a starter with 21 touchdowns to 11 interceptions this was enough for some teams to reach out for a trade and Castle was sent to Kansas City Once Brady returned now most people don't see Castle as a special NFL quarterback in fact he's been clowned on at times when they absolutely have to throw the ball he can throw it out there and complete a pass everyone they're not winning games with the passing game come at me bro come at me the Chiefs certainly overpaid for him back in 2009 and Castle spent most of his career as a journeyman backup but I mean come on this is just insane this dude didn't start a single game in college and somehow lasted 14 seasons in the NFL his crowning achievement had to be his 2010 campaign in Kansas City where he had 27 touchdowns to just seven interceptions and he was also named a pro bowl alternate now in wrapping up this video there are definitely others like Matt Castle who never got the chance to prove themselves the probability that we'll ever see another starting quarterback in the NFL who didn't start a single game in college is basically zero [Music] [Music] [Applause] down [Music] thank you
