a few weeks ago the folks at Next Level racing asked me if I'd like to try their Sim pit and I said sure So it just showed up so let's check it out so as I mentioned in the mooch's DCS rig episode that I did a few months ago I have a SIM pit already it's the valerison pit that I bought myself online it works it gives me the feel of being in a cockpit without being too over the top you know some folks have built full up cockpits and I salute that that's just more effort than I want to put into it and two things to note with this one first the thrustmaster hotas warthog throttle quadrant doesn't fit perfectly on this template you can see I had to add a zip tie to make it secure and as I mentioned in that episode I had to put a little piece of wood under the thrustmaster tpr rudder pedals to make sure these Rudder petals wouldn't hit the frame of the Sim pit but otherwise it's fine it's great the chair is very comfortable works great the Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor fits fine on the back of the monitor stand which is part of this rig now this one came in two boxes as you can see here the monitor stand is a separate piece of gear different than the Valero Sim pit where it's integrated into the pit and here's what the box looks like as you can see flight simulator Boeing military edition it's branded Boeing I can tell you this box is pretty heavy but I managed to get it up to the mooch land facility up in my attic all right let's go ahead and unbox this thing starting with the chair itself so it looks like we have lumbar support something that the Valero Sim didn't have maybe because the angle of the chair didn't require it we'll find out here's the back of the chair you can see it's branded bowing on one side and Next Level racing now there has this cool ejection seat military green going on that's a that's a nice feature all right so put that aside see what else we got in here and here's the bottom of the chair and this seriously looks very ejection seat like again that's that's a cool feature foreign so it has a cut out there for Center stick and these levers for adjusting the seat so those are the two basic parts of the seat foreign well lots of moving Parts as we say so it comes with all the tools and Hardware boxed up hopefully this will make it easy to assemble there's another bit of hardware and an instruction manual something that the Valero Sim did not have in fact thank God somebody made a easy to follow video on YouTube for assembling that one because the directions were unusable now I know somebody also did a video about assembling this chair last year and I'll return to it I've watched it without any idea of what I was really looking at just to get a general sense of how many steps there were there are a lot of steps but hopefully this manual is easy to follow and then everything else in here is just the components of the stand the frame of the chair so that's the unboxing part let me go ahead and assemble both of these and then put on all of the DCS components including the monitor and I'll let you know what my initial thoughts are at that point so see you in a bit all right here it is assembled the next level military edition Boeing branded simpit it wasn't hard necessarily to put together but it did take about let's say six hours or so the instructions are very clear and this combined with the well-packaged hardware and tools made it really clear if you go step by step not an exceptional challenge which was nice so let me go over how I've configured the rig here the components throttle stick Etc are really well mounted with this system they're not going anywhere and that's an improvement over the previous system that I was using another thing as I mentioned before with the Valero Sim pit I had to modify it with a 2x4 under the rudder pedals these thrustmaster tpr Rudder pedals which again I love a lot especially flying the Tomcat so the next level military edition Sim pit is designed to handle this thrustmaster tpr rig and so it fits great doesn't hit against anything really adjustable in terms of leg room Etc you know I'm tall and so I needed to move forward so I got plenty of room with this one I mounted the keyboard in front this time before I had it off to the side there is a mounting bracket if you wanted to put the keyboard off to the side because of the way I'm running DCS right now I like to have it in front another great feature is this mount for the keyboard has this latch at the bottom here and so it moves back and forth so that makes it easy to get in and out of the cockpit off to the side there is mounting screws or mounting holes for if you want to fly the F-16 which I certainly will want to in time and the mouse pad fits right there it's really really convenient in terms of accessing it I've put it a little farther aft than where I have the throttle just the way my hand feels when I'm flying so a lot of flexibility with this rig the other thing that's cool about the seat is it's really super adjustable you can put it wherever you want and it moves back and forth easily that wasn't the case with my previous Sim pit so that's that's a nice feature too and as I mentioned the monitor stand is a separate piece of gear but it was easy to assemble and my Odyssey G9 fits just fine on it you can see I have the track IR bracket on the top so we're good to go now I have flown this rig a few times since I put it together and I'm really happy with it having the controls be more secure is great especially those thrustmaster tpr Rudder pedals they weren't quite secure with the workaround I had to do with my previous Sim pit setup but these are so in the Tomcat your boot in full Rudder High angles of attack taxi around the flight deck this is great with this rig another thing to mention is the next little racing military edition Sim pit comes with a harness that routes through these holes at the top of the chair but since I plan on remaining in the 1G environment in spite of how rigorous my simulator missions are I am not going to rig it the other question people might have is how much does this cost well it retails currently for about what the valer Sim pit costs which is about eight hundred dollars so maybe you're a DCS flyer Who currently has a desktop system and you're looking for something a little more immersive that won't totally break the bank well Sim pits are a great option and particularly this next Generation military flight Edition Boeing branded simpit is excellent that'll do it for
