hey guys it's been the coin geek at old pueblo coin and today i'm pretty excited to bring to you a little group of five dollar indians that i got in and uh all graded all certified and uh you know just gave me a chance to think about these coins and uh their values and how hard it is to collect them and yet on one hand it's also not too hard to collect and what i mean by that is you know they seem to me to be somewhat of a value in the marketplace of course these five indians are in queues which means that uh unlike most coins where the design is the high points on these coins the field is the high point because the design is struck into the coin giving them quite a unique look compared to most all other us coins produced and also making them extremely challenging to grade it's a series that if you want to try to collect uncirculated coins you're going to be dropping a lot of cash on on these coins because a lot of them are going to be you know 1500 type coins to get a nice unk and some of them are going to be astronomical but if you collect nice au coins you're gonna get a lot of really attractive coins and most of the coins are going to be in the you know roughly 700 700 ballpark and that's um of course not gonna be the whole series and we'll look at a broader view of the whole series so this 1908 is the the first year of issue from the philadelphia mint and the pcgs called this an au 58 so typically on an au 58 you're gonna see really full luster in the fields now what happens is a lot of these coins when you see them in original condition their luster can be kind of muted because if someone hasn't tried to dip them or anything like that that luster in the field can be a little bit dark and then after that you're going to look at the design elements and see really full luster across the eagle's head and legs into the fascis down there and of course same thing on the indian side you're going to see great luster across the face and where you're going to see especially the neck by the way and the feathers where you will see actual signs of wear usually are going to be kind of on that eagles shoulders the high point and of course the field itself is where you start to see little bits of breaks in luster okay so uh 1908 let's move on uh 1909 here and once again you know talk about a coin that's hard to grade uh i think the majority of people if i just shared these two coins next to each other uh would appreciate this coin more than the previous and i will say also that um that this coin i think at an au 53 and this one a58 uh i i still prefer this 53. so once again by the coin not the holder uh this coin has a little bit of that orange original orange original you know in other words it hasn't been played with they didn't strike them with the orange but that gold over time gets some of that orange tone to it i like that quite a bit myself uh the coin itself has really great luster to it and you'll see especially on the eagle in indian no more signs of wear than you saw on that previous coin and then of course the fields i actually like the field buster on here quite a bit compared to this other 08 and so kind of fun because i think you know maybe this one's really a 55 but at the end of the day there's such a small price difference on these and the reason i say i think there are value in the marketplace right now is because you know in at this current market level most of your two and a half indians in the similar grades you know high au's are trading for 450 or something like that maybe 500 even and so these at 700 range uh seems like a value let's find that mint mark because this is the only one i have with the mint mark on it and they are hard to find see the arrow points to the mint mark that's what i like to tell people on these coins and even then it's like uh is there a rim bump there is that a is that a mint mark you know that that is that is a mint mark let's see if we can zoom a little closer this time and you can just see that little d there and uh that's the type of thing that also on rock coins you got to be careful for because you know a mint mark can make a difference on some of these guys so pretty neat coin this series has 24 different coins in it and i think probably about 22 of them are really buyable purchasable available at a price point that's not out of line for a nice au there are a couple of different ones in there that are just going to knock your socks off one of them is the 09 from new orleans the only new orleans mint coin in the series and that coin's really gonna really going to cost you if i was mean i'd just tell you to start guessing the grade on these guys i already told you what grades they are but uh you know trying to account for the overall strike of the coin and wear on the coin it's really tricky still i would say this has less field luster than the previous coin but once again i also thought the previous coin was under graded when you compare it to the uh the 08 that 09 d looks to me under graded based on that previous one here's another one the 10 similar coin you know you got to account for strike and and whether or not the coin is fully struck up but to me the field luster still this guy still takes the cake right now that 09 to me is the nicest coin we've looked at so far next up 1911 and this guy here 1911 from philly close to a million made on these but you know a lot of this a lot of these issues have mintages of less than a quarter of a million even like that first year issue that 08 is a mintage 577 thousand and uh what do we got here that 09 d that one has a high mintage that one has the mintage of uh three million that may be the highest mintage now you may have you may have noticed already this this coin looks easily superior to the other coins this to me is what you want the coins to look like and by the way splitting hairs talking about splitting hairs and this coin is struck strong and has really great luster to it really great luster this is easily easily the nicest coin in the group and and we got an old green holder that says au-55 um i don't know that there's a big price difference on these from au to unk but uh this one may get priced a little bit closer to ms-60 price point um just a neat coin this type of coin that people put a cac sticker on and then they go price it to the moon and all that stuff um you know it's also the type of coin that sometimes i mean really i'd be very tempted to crack out and send in but i think i'm just going to price it according to how i see the coin and if somebody else sees the coin in a similar way um then you know they'll buy it you know in in speaking about just the the difficulty of trying to collect these guys your your objective is to find coins like this and your objective is to find that eye appeal that type of luster and so that's the that's the difficulty i mean not all of them are struck that way with that not all of them have that high level of luster uh you know it's pretty tough to get yeah i mean so next up i got a couple more show you and then we'll look at the uh the comparison in the in the red book here just so you can look at the overall series this 1912 also from the philadelphia mint also pretty nice luster throughout throughout the back on there similar to the other coins this one has a real strong flat spot on the eagles tip of the wings compared to some of the other ones a little flatter there and you'll see a little bit of the same here on this side and the indian headdress not on the feathers per se but on the uh the part that goes across the top has a little more flatness to it the luster is a little bit more muted and this one's an a53 and i think that is at the end of the day very directly related to the the fact that there's a lot less luster on the field on this coin than the other ones because the condition on the indian and the eagle are going to look similar on almost all these coins and so at that point you're really starting just to try to figure out if there's wear based on the luster last but not least on this uh in this series i got one more philly mint by the way there's there's about half the series is filly in half of san francisco you got nine phillies nine san francisco's five denver's and the one nawlins once again just the tiniest bit of wear on that shoulder but overall you're looking at a little bit more lustrous field i think than the previous coin uh in my opinion they're they're not too far off but i like this one a little bit more i like this 15 a little bit more than i liked that 12. and uh this one came back this one's the same grade so i'm pretty comparable coins on these two and so i think i think when you look at them the the i don't say head scratch the ones that are interesting to me is the fact that this this 08 does not seem as much of a 58 after you look at you know that 11 and a 55 and this 09 d and a 53 holder both of those seem like they're possibly off based on what the other series looks like and speaking of the series just a quick glance at the red book here to see you know most of these coins don't have huge jumps in value until you get to the uncirculated grades you know when you're looking at most these coins have these populations uh or pardon me original mintages a lot of them have mintages under you know 200 000 you'll see these mintages of 400 247 2625 160. so and you'll see the price points don't jump around a lot of course then there's the 0.90 which is heavily counterfeited with originally only 34 000. i think pcgs has graded less than 700 of these if you want to exclude this coin from the series i understand why because a low grade one is going to be thousands of dollars but even some of these coins that seem to have pretty low mintages you know this 11d 72 000 you know it's still you can if you step down to an xf it's actually probably pretty similar in price a lot of these au's and then after that once you get down into the the other one that's really where the 1929 even though they had a high mintage there's less than 400 of those graded by pcgs huge numbers so that would probably be you know off the board off the board if you wanted to just reduce yourself to 20 coins and get rid of the four most expensive you could that would be that 11d would be the next coin off off the board and then you'd have to figure out which one to cut probably you know in higher grades maybe like the o9s or something like that but either way it's a fun series to collect really challenging to get all of them and really challenging as you can see to get ones with really nice eye appeal to them so anyways guys thanks so much for watching i'm ben the coin geek you can subscribe by clicking on the l
