for years the new orleans saints have been a study in futility now they've finally gone from pretender to contender the wizard behind this transformation is head coach jim mora reuben mays has become the nfc's leading rusher and the saints defense has repented for the sins of its past until now it's been like old times for the 49ers who lead the nfc west thanks to joe montana but with montana out steve young makes his first 49ers start whether it's montana or young the passes will be in good hands those of jerry rice these 49ers are looking to pad their division lead it's bill walsh's sophisticated san francisco offense against jim mora's intense league leading defense and heaven only knows what miracles these saints can perform and a capacity crowd as usual at candlestick park as the new orleans saints take on the high-flying san francisco 49ers and you could not ask for more glorious afternoon for football or for anything that matter temperature is 60 degrees and not a cloud in the sky in the bay area the story in the nfc west the 49ers with a win today for all intents and purposes would wrap up the division race it would give them a three-game lead with six to play the saints with the fourth best record in the conference they could narrow the gap with a win and the rams you see have won dramatically on the last play of their game against the cardinals good afternoon again everyone i'm dick stockton along with terry bradshaw big story here has to be joe montana not starting could play a freak accident in practice steve young makes his first start what does that mean for the niners and your thoughts on the game he's only taken two snaps so far this season the question is can he run this very complicated offense on the other hand the saints like to run the football with dalton hilliard and reuben mays number one rushing attack to complement number one defense today the key though for the saints is they said they want to throw the football early and throw it at least 50 percent of the time if they're going to win this game and we're at candlestick park in san francisco and welcome to the game between the 49ers and the saints battle between the top two teams in the nfc west that is morton anderson who will be kicking off to the 49ers who have won the toss del rogers is back along with harry sydney and the game is underway and it'll be rogers at the nine yard line and rogers has hit as he gets beyond the 25-yard line and the tackle made by johnny pose so there is steve young who is making his first start in the uniform of the 49ers formerly with tampa bay and let's take a look at the very strong defense as terry mentioned bruce clark tony elliott and jim wilts up front linebackers veteran ricky jackson and sam mill vaughn johnson and pat swilling and the secondary led by the veteran dave weimer first and ten on the 28-yard line and a reverse to jerry right young is blocking and jerry rice gets a first down and up to the 45-yard line antonio gibson makes the tackle and a pickup of 17 yards on the first play of the game normally you save reverses for when you find out what a defense is doing they're chasing in reverse 49ers coming out they're known for doing gadgets fancy plays and certainly a good way to start the game by giving the ball to jerry rice and a gain of 17 just shy of the 45 of the san francisco 49ers first and ten tom rathman and roger craig the running backs will set the offense for you young the left-hander on his first cost is thrown past rice incomplete defended by van jake the rest of the offense and up front a revamped offensive line wallace sapolu cross playing center in place of quillin holly and barton the number one draft pick veteran russ francis is the tight end and the craig and rathman in the backfield and rice and mike wilson are the wide receivers behind the left-hander steve young terry said just taken only two snaps coming into this game and ten at the 45. and roger craig with his first carry bulls his way into saint territory gets to the 49-yard line it'll be third and about four for the 49ers so craig who has the most total yards from scrimmage in the nfl moved him to tailback from fullback well he's ideally suited it was the tail back in college rathman and one of his teammates at nebraska moves over to fullback to give him a blocking back reason being now they want to spare craig now he can catch the ball and run it not have to block as much third down and four on the new orleans 49 young up the middle has craig and craig may not have the first down vaughn johnson ferocious linebacker made the stop and we may have a measurement as craig was stopped at the 46-yard line and it's awfully close one of the mistakes the saints felt they made in their first game was by bringing their safeties up and pressing their corners and coming up and face fate forcing too many plays up tight they felt like it gave away the big plays to them this time in this game they want to come up and play very soft with their linebackers and keep everything in front of them that's what they did that time craig caught the ball but it was in front of him didn't make the first down there is jim mora the saints head coach who was awfully upset after that loss the first time around and the 49ers have made the first down by the slimmest of margins maura was very upset after the 24 to 22 loss the first time these teams played he said you know we've come close and woulda coulda shoulda doesn't matter anymore we've got to convert those close calls into wins well the saints have had a history of not converting not making the big plays not winning the big game big games and and their fans have gotten excited about their team and then been disappointed maura said the heck with that hey let's win these games first down for the 49ers on the new orleans 46. first possession of the ball game and a play action young up top to rathman he's got it inside the 25. brett maxie and antonio gibson on the tackle and a pickup of 21 on a pass downfield to the fullback well it's a simple drawback you can notice that the safety max he's reading the quarterback he notices that the play action he comes firing up to pick up rathman out of the backfield and wrath them doing a smart job of seeing the coverage and then slowing down giving young a nice target he gets the ball in there six catches last week for rathman in a banner day against the oilers and another first down on the saint 25 and moving in the line on the right side of the line russ francis might have been drawn off referee today is bob frederick paul starts offense number 61 first down still five yard penalty jesse sapolo the left guard moved that'll bring it back to the 30-yard line where it'll be first down and 15 now for the 49ers and bill walsh who frankly said on friday when we talked to him terry we got a war on our hands because he knows that the saints are in stride now well he knows if they win this football game they're six and three and they're they then have tightened up the race in their division and have a chance to win it young loses his footing he was chased by jim wilkes and a loss on the play of some five yards second down and 20 and jim wilch not normally a pass rusher in on young jim wilkes right in number 94 for the saints is a is primarily a run stopper that's his job he's smart he's consistent not known to be a pass rusher that time he got inside got the pressure on young and made the sack loss of six yards officially so it'll be second down and 21 back to the 36 yard line 49er in saint territory young dumps it off to craig and craig loses his footing on the 30-yard line van jake supplied the seal so it'll be third down and 15 for the 49ers i like the way they're coming out using craig you know in the first game in the saints he i know that of three balls that he dropped dick in that game along and it's also a good play for for steve young a little screen pass very simple but it builds confidence and also craig can forget about the bad things that happened down in new orleans told us friday he says you know i'm still irritated over those drops and it's still in the back of my head he says it won't happen again that's what walsh said he said it won't happen to him again third and 15. young with the ability to run is knocked out of bounds and that will set up ray washington's opportunity pat swilling good pass rusher for the saints at linebacker chase young out of bounds fourth down and ray worship will come in to try a field goal one of the plays that walsh put in primarily to use the athletic ability of young was in thirds down to come out and use a sprint out with young primarily as a runner not looking to throw the football right now he's worshiping and hoping you might say the veteran kicker 46-yard attempt and joe montana is holding for him and the saints might have gotten a piece of it the kick is short and no good a 46-yard field goal is no good by ray worship and the 15-year veteran misses the first opportunity for a score in this game and the saints will take over on the 29-yard line well now is an opportunity to find out if if indeed what the saints want to do in this football game dick is to come out and throw the football quite honestly maura said we didn't throw the football that much in the first game after the strike because we didn't feel that bobby a bear was comfortable enough and our players were comfortable enough but now we feel like he is he's played well the last two weeks and so we want to get him out there and throw the ball reuben mays and dalton hilliard are in the backfield first and ten and a bear is going deep and the receiver fell down and tim mckeyer had a shot at the ball the pass was intended for mike jones incomplete the 49er base defense pete coogler and michael carter up front kevin fagan starting in place of dwayne board they want him to be fresh when he comes in built mccall jim fonhorst michael walter and keena turner are the linebackers mackayer and griffin the corners jeff fuller the strong safety and rodney lot the all-pro free safety second and ten at the 29. two tight end formation reuben made and maze is hit hard at the 30 by ronnie lott that's what lot is known for the rest of the 49er offense or the saints offense jim dombrowski brad edelman joel hilgenberg the rookie steve trepilo veteran stan brock up front hobie brenner the tight end barry word is the fullback they started hillyard at the last minute and eric martin joins mike jones as a wide receiver third down and eight at the 31. charles haley's hit for the 49ers a pass rusher on a four-man line hey bear gets his man at midfield and it's eric martin and his pass is complete and a first down a 19-yard pickup and lonzel hill might have deflected that pass that wound up in martin's hands what you're going to see is the excellent throw is fuller 49 the strong safety comes up sits in his own and there's the tip ball goes right over fuller's head head and right into the arms of martin those are the breaks you need sometime and a first down just at midfield for the saints no score with 8 40 remaining in the first quarter and the ball was nearly stripped away but maze has another first down and a pickup of 12 for the saints with don griffin making the tackle at the 39. thanks for coming out with a three tight end offense and off the top left of your screen you'll see the tight end tice come down and kick inside he's the lead blocker allowing maze to cut off his hips and pick up the big first down it's a cub defense three tight ends for the saints represent cubs and the first down it's a 38. bobby a bear is opened up the offense a lot more play fake he's going to run it and now he throws and he's got his van barry word out of the backfield hay bear could have run at the last minute decided to throw and a gain of 14 puts the saints deeper in 49er territory in another first down at the 25-yard line one of the hardest things to do and the thing i'm impressed with on a bear on that shot was the fact that after he scrambled and got outside i thought he was going to run and then all of a sudden he pulls up and popped the ball to word hey bear who has the ability to throw deep with a lot of touch has been sacked only four times this year first and ten at the 25. made just a couple for reuben maze as he's brought down at the 23 by michael walter of the 49ers who lead san francisco's defense in tackle one of the things we'll see today in the emergence of dalton hilliard in the running attack and receiving attack of the saints one of the reasons for that is that in the last game they ran hayes a maze 10 times in a row dick and he fumbled and what they want to do now with hilliard is spell maze running three or four times and then get hilliard into the ball game mark patterson a wide receiver who's been on ir former raider is wide to the right on second down and eight on the niner 23. a bear with time and overthrows intended for hobie brenner incomplete defending on the play was jeff fuller with help from jim fonhorst so it'll be third now a counter action you notice that a bear came out fake to pitch to the left that takes the linebackers to the left and he sprints out to the right with the guard leading he's looking for hobie brenner all the way but patterson 88 had come all the way across the field and was wide open in the end zone for a touchdown good third down conversion team are the saints they need eight yards hey bear chase stover going after him and the pass is incomplete and the 49ers sent a bunch including jeff stover and it'll be fourth down lonzell hill was the intended receiver for new orleans morton anderson who kicked five field goals in the first meeting between the clubs but missed a 52-yarder as time ran out that would have won the game we'll try to put the saints in front brian hanson will hold 6 10 remaining in the first quarter and this will be a 40 yard attempt and anderson's kick is good hit the upright and went over and the kick by morton anderson is successful a 40-yard field goal and the saints draw first blood this stadium is a very windy stadium but it's not a north-south east-west type of wind it's a swirling type and you can notice this football actually is just hooked by anderson continues to hook and it's going to hit the right well on the screen it'll be the right side of the goal post look at that right on the side dick and kicks back in you got to think early in this ball game things are going the same's way deflected pass and a completion at midfield and then the ball hits the upright and goes over and it's three to nothing saints right now however let's go to nfl today for a report here's brent musburger dick the dallas cowboys will go to overtime with the new england patriots rouzak hammers in the field goal that ties it inside of 30 seconds cowboys have won the flip they will receive let's go back today saints leading three to nothing that much time remaining in the first quarter we saw joe montana holding for ray wirshing with his first field goal attempt that was unsuccessful on the opening series of the ball game before the game he was practicing there and that's how he got hurt not his left hand but the ball hit his right hand and hurt his knuckle and that's why he's not starting sometimes you can get careless he's even as good as montana is it a simple thing is holding for extra points when the right hand got out in front of the left and where she kicked him on it del rogers on the five and rogers brings it out to the 23-yard line mark patterson making the tackle there so the 49ers go on offense for the second time young as you look at some of the scores coming in minnesota coming from behind to beat tampa bay and the rest in camp he actually split time with joe montana more than usual for a backup in practice throwing on first down roger craig first down for craig and a penalty marker is thrown craig is tackled at the 36-yard line by van jakes and a penalty against the 49ers and an eligible receiver apparently downfield normally in a case like a screen an ineligible receiver would be a lineman downfield an eligible man on the offense number 69 downfield first down that's right bruce colley so sapolo and kali the two guards involved in penalties here early there are types of screens there's a three count screen where the lyman pulls he goes out and goes one thousand one one thousand two one thousand three and he's gone in that case colleges count counted a little bit too fast and got out ahead of the play bring the ball back to the 13 and a first and 20 for young and the 49ers young can't find a receiver and out of bounds at the 23-yard line by antonio gibson and ricky jackson also in on the play ricky jackson coach moore told us that you know so much have been said about well jackson is in clark on that side i'm really playing that well and the injuries and whatnot but he said to us that ricky jackson is playing the best football that he's seen in the last two years and as a matter of fact to back up that statement he said in our last game most of the teams ran to the left away from him doesn't have the spectacular sacks but is playing steady football for the saints gain of nine second down and 10 at the 23. young to craig again and craig is stopped by pat swilling swilling gets him at the 26-yard line a gain of three so it'll be third down and long for the 49ers and you can see here where the saints deserve their number one ranking they're a really solid defense and they seem to have everything covered well they learned a lot in their first meeting with 49ers and with steve young in there they're content to give the two three-yard pass and in that case that's what they got as long as they can do that they're going to win this football game frank warren and james haynes in for pass rushing purposes for the saints third and eight young flush from the pocket and a penalty flag goes down and young is stopped three yards shy of a first down by vaughan johnson has swilling also in on the play but a flag is down and that'll be an automatic first down a holding call against the saints costly penalty because the saints had stopped and jim mora he thinks he's holding number 44 first down dave weimer upset at that call steve young continues to run and scramble a lot today he will frustrate the secondary of the saints so that when they have an opportunity to really put the helmet on him that's what they're going that's what he's going to experience all day long that was by linebacker von johnson and he's the wrong guy you don't want him running into you first and 10 for the 49ers at the 36 following the penalty to weimer roger craig slices off tackle and great pursuit that time and it was dave weimer who's got to be agitated after that call came in from the opposite cornerback position to make this tackle after 37. running running a football team and getting off the ball it depends a lot on the tight end and the blocking ability if you're going to run you have to have a tight end that can block now you can notice russ francis 81 as he's talked as he's in there scrambling and fighting with ricky jackson i would say that case that francis won that battle harry sydney is coming the game in the backfield team with rogers rays on second and ten on the option passer at kansas fakes a pass and stumbles forward to the 40-yard line shy of a first down by some seven yards tony elliott made the tackle and an option threat right now for an nfl today report let's find out what's happening in the patriot cowboy game here's brent the toss they've got it the handoff to hershey walker left side explosion he's on his way 60 yards for the touchdown 173 yards rushing on the day for walker cowboys 23 patriots 17 in overtime back to dick all right brent thank you and so the cowboys are five and four on the year second place to the redskins who won on third and five on a fake handoff steve young will have a first down for the 49ers with some tricky runnings bruce clark and dave weimer on the stop and again to midfield cepullo number 61 and number 69 bruce colley pulling outside once again in a third down situation when it's five yards or less the secondary will play man coverage that way they can play their receivers tight when they do that they have no one covering the quarterback so if you sprint out to the outside and run the receivers off there's no one there to tackle him he gets the first down and young has gained 24 yards and four carries thus far so that extra dimension is evident here roger craig on first down gets in the same territory and picks up close to five yards sam mills the five foot nine inch inside linebacker who has played very well for the saints makes the stop minute and a half remaining in this first quarter three to nothing to score the saints lead but the 49ers are driving they have second down and six on the new orleans 47. touchdown and we want to welcome the audience that have seen the dramatic finish between the cowboys and the patriots we have had an electrifying touchdown pass here for those of you who have been watching our game you know that the cowboys won in overtime and here the 49ers have just taken a 6-3 lead over the new orleans saints on a 46-yard pass play from steve young who's starting in place of joe montana to the great jerry rice ray wirshing is in with montana holding to attempt the conversion and it's a 7-3 game the 49ers lead dick stockton and terry bradshaw and this crowd is going wild well the thing that happens is you look at 39 brett maxey he's keying montana i mean king young dropping back in the zone now young slips and that freezes the safety just enough to allow rice to get in behind maxie and when he did that young popped in the football for the touchdown anderson's field goal gave the saints the lead before the big pass to that man jerry rice steve young to jerry rice and the 49ers lead the saints 7-3 107 remaining in the first quarter ray wirshing will kick it off for the 49ers deep for the saints mel gray and dalton hilliard and it'll be mel gray at the four yard line and gray carries it out to the 36-yard line and a 32-yard return and on that scoring drive steve young who missed his first pass now has hit five in a row is five for six and 80 yards so far in this ball game and you never know he took only two snaps coming into this ball game talking to montana he said the thing that's so hard about this offense is not the plays but once again the formation setting the formations up so you have to be concerned about whether or not young could get the right formations for the right place so far i think he's done that under a minute to go in the first period first and ten for the saints on their own 36-yard line fake to reuben maze a bear clap and down kevin fagan on the sack and a bear fires the ball down in disgust kevin fagan who has not played since the strike but awfully strong up there fagin's coming in 75 right up in the center of your screen playing in this game in the place of dwayne board and the primary reason for that is to give board some time to rest coming off the block out really a good job by the saints dick but in his pursuit all of a sudden catches up with a bear only the fifth time this year hey bert a bear has been sacked second and 15. a bear going for lonzell hill and it's nearly picked off by jeff fuller what a remarkable athlete jeff fuller is he is a strong safety but the 49ers refer to him as a linebacker well if you look at him and you walk on the practice field he's so big that he looks like a linebacker but he's their strong safety and a good one a bear coming back killing the strong safety the safety says go to the outside and that's what bobby a bear does it's just too late and good job by fuller as he actually outruns the pass to almost make the interception in the shotgun four wide receivers third down and 16. make it 15 for the saints on the 30. hey bear going to lonzell hill and it's just overthrown ronnie lott was covering but hill got away from him but on the incompletion it'll be fourth down and brian hanson will come in to kick it away for the saints 7-3 to score the 49ers lead brian hanson who has the most kicks inside the 20-yard line going back don griffin penalty marker down and we will have a penalty against the 49ers griffin downed at the 27-yard line but a flag back there and the saints apparently will retain possession oh that's a call that's going to drive bill walsh up the wall you put him in there you get him out of there you force the saints to punt and then you go in and give a costly penalty that turns the ball over to the to the saints and gives him the ball in a first down look at he can tell on his face that he's frustrated with that he got off of beauty anyway a 49-yard kick it looked like john taylor wide receiver was involved on that play we'll check personal foul running into the kicker you were running into the kicker and it will be first down and it will be one on time down one on time down for the first quarter running into the kicker against johnny taylor will bring the ball out to the 46-yard line no time remaining and that will end things in the first quarter no time showing on the clock and the saints may have one more play in this quarter even though we have no time showing free play because the penalty came on the last play of the quarter it'll be a first down for the saints on their own 45-yard line so two critical penalties the third down holding penalty against new orleans allowed the 49ers to keep the ball ultimately they scored and now let's see what the saints do with their second chance yardage into 49er territory to the 47-yard line and that will do it michael walter makes the tackle and another flag is strong this quarter and that is the end of the first quarter the 49ers lead it 7-3 dick stockton and terry bradshaw san francisco we start the second quarter and joe montana was definitely upset over the decision to go with jor with uh young well a veteran quarterback he felt like he could play and he didn't the thing he was upset about was the fact that coach walsh came out early in the week i believe it was wednesday or even as much as thursday morning and said that young was my starter without allowing montana time to heal throughout the week and possibly play in this game meanwhile the saints have a second and three as we start the second quarter reuben mays has stopped from behind a couple of yards shy of a first down by kevin fagan bacon already with a sack in the ball game and it'll be third and a two yards for the saints and we want to apologize we have intermittent audio problems that we are working to correct fagan's one of those guys that when you ask for one word to describe his temperament the word that they gave us was tenacious third and two saints on the 49er 47-yard line a bear as his man and a first down mike mark patterson and the ball is jarred loose and the 49ers feel they recovered it but it is not at a completed pass to patterson who has good hands and like most of the saints receivers not fast and quick but reliable well that's the thing about all of their saints receivers have the ability to run excellent routes and while running read the coverage and make the adjustments good job by a bear spotting patterson with the corner way off of him got the ball out there little four yard hitch he got he makes the recession first down and did a good job of running after he made the reception a bear had missed his last four before that completion and he keeps the drive going for the saints to the 49ers 37-yard line first and ten a bear's pass caught by hobie brenner and another first down to the 27-yard line and keena turner made a shoe top tackle otherwise brenner would have had more picks up 11 that time to the right of your screen you'll see brenner the tight end come off and and keena turner 58 picks him up he has him covered man for man but brenner gets the step on turner makes the reception and then of course kena turner 58 shoestring kobe brenner has been blocking well lately he and john tice have been waging the battle for the number one tight end spot with the saints early here in the second quarter the saints trailing the niners seven to three it's first and ten at the 26 three tight ends and they go to the strong side reuben may and mays picks up four yards before jim fonhorst and tim mckeyer bring him down before you can run outside with the running back you have to be able to seal the inside with a tight end on a linebacker left of your screen 85 brenner again getting outside trying to make a hook block on keena turner 58 gets inside pushes a little double team there now they drive him right past the hole and then maze with a great cut back ability gets back up inside for three yards and the deepest penetration of the game thus far for the saints second and six on the san francisco 22. dalton hilliard in the backfield and a flag is down see whether brad edelman might have moved the left guard all start on the offense number 63 second down oh you hate that dick when you move the ball and you're doing a good job and you're running it and a bear is doing a fine job of throwing the football and to get down in here and have little silly penalties like a on offsides by an offensive lineman which obviously meant that he thought the count was something other than what it was penalties down close can kill you so it's now second and 11. six defensive backs in for the 49ers corey nixon and tom homo come in dalton hilliard fights his way inside the 25 gain of about three larry roberts former top pick by the niners makes the stop and what a game hilliard had last week triple threat against the rams 92 yards rushing caught four passes including a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass the nfc offensive player of the week dalton hilliard third and eight on the san francisco 24. tenth play of the drive coming up a bear going for growth and it's incomplete pass intended for paterson and covering with don griffin and fine defense by the second year cornerback don griffin who was stepped for step with patterson all the way well griffin as you can tell has his man in has a man covered inside technique automatically tells a bear he's got him man for man he sees it comes up throws the football just barely over the outstretched hands that time of number 88 patterson it is fourth down and morton anderson has come on to try a 41-yarder he's already been successful from 40 yards out and the all-time accuracy leader and this kick is no good off to the right so anderson is 10 to 14 on the year and jim morris sees an opportunity to go by the boards well earlier morton anderson we noticed that he hit the right goal post by hooking the football this time it's going to go even farther than that another hook way to the right and the tiers are for joe montana who comes in the game for the 49ers and will come back in just a moment the upstart saints a team to be reckoned with but soon they'll reckon with the giants next sunday on cbs sports so joe montana is forced to come in the ball game because steve young has a slight concussion first and ten for the 49ers and roger craig at the 24-yard line and barrels it out to the 42 a pickup of 18 yards vaughn johnson and brett maxi on the tackle well when you're throwing the football a lot on first down you automatically get teams rushing you to stop but this is an inverted draw where montana actually goes beyond the running back turns around then gives the football to them and then you see the fine job craig did after he got the football 49ers bring it out to the 42. montana fires and montana completes the pass to john frank just shy of a first down and right now montana's knuckle looks pretty good from up here well he told us that he could play he wanted to play he was frustrated about he was matt in fact he was angry that walsh had called him in and said we're not going to start you because as a veteran quarterback if a young kid comes in there and he plays well heck you might lose him you might lose your job even a guy like joe montana fears losing his job leading passer in the nfc having a tremendous year after a dramatic comeback from back surgery a year ago second and one at the 49 and roger craig with some great moves gets a first down into saint territory at the 41-yard line van jakes and brett maxi on the stop and there's a glimpse of roger craig not the fullback but the tailback and his ability to show some of those moves he hasn't been able to show well it's interesting when you think about 49er football you think about finesse passing but the thing that the 49ers are doing now is that they are using a power running game and craig is the main man with rathman doing the blocking 8 35 remaining in the first half keller montana the ball and an interception by the saints it was tipped and ricky jackson picks it off and that will end that threat one of the problems the saints has had with montana is they say we do not want him to have to bring the ball back up there's the pump to the left back to the left turns around knows exactly where his outlet is and unfortunately from him heller 89 the tight end let the ball go right through his hands now the unfortunate thing is you see montana's reaction is that in the stat sheet it's going to say interception montana and as a quarterback i always hated that because it really you say to yourself hey fellas come on that's not my fault i didn't do that well you threw it too hard it was always a reason and the first turnover of the ball game puts the ball back in the hands of the saints who trails seven to three first down on their own 28. lonsdale hill in motion a bear and dalton hilliard nearly had a chance to make the reception after the ball was tipped a couple of times could not hold on michael walter was defending on the play well they follow the bouncing ball a bear coming back sending his man underneath there's the pass right inside dalton hilliard a fine receiver drops it fine horse tips it and then larry roberts 99 i'm sorry walter he tips it and it finally hits the ground hips hip tip so far the tips have gone the saints way with the field goal off the upright and a deflection for a first down not that time second and ten hilliard and maze in the backfield and ronnie lott penalty marker down and a late hit perhaps on the 49ers personal foul on the defense ball carrier astrid is out of bounds first down costly penalty on ronnie lott well once your player is out of bounds you have to take your hands off and what happens you're going to see rodney lot has him and then pulls him down to the ground hey you know you throw him to the ground what are you gonna do he actually didn't try to just you know jam him in the ground i really disagree with that call i don't think it should have been roughing quarterback you know absolutely but i don't think in that case that that should have been a penalty against why and jeff fuller also held himself back and lot just wheeled him down the crowd unappreciative of that penalty but it's a first and ten for the saints on their own 45-yard line mays still fighting for yardage picks up a couple keena turner and ronnie lottin on the play you know one of the reasons it could be that lot had that flag thrown him is he has always been known as an overly aggressive defensive back and that goes back to his first two or three years in the league and you know actually you carry a reputation with you throughout your career and the reps are standing over there and they probably say well there's lot going at it again and they give him the penalty you talked about how the saints wanted to balance their offense they've been running 57 of the time this year today only 40 so they've opened it up second down and eight a bear pass complete in the 49er territory to the tight end john tice close to first down yardage at the 46 don griffin on the stops third down and one less than one actually time remaining in the first half the 49ers lead 7-3 steve young to jerry rice 46 yards for the only touchdown reuben mayes has the first down diving up the middle and brought down at the 49ers 42-yard line the rams with a field goal after time and run out the colts were way behind the dolphins and came back and won the jets now five and four minnesota with a big win both those teams have wild card hopes and some of the other finals from earlier this afternoon saints first down at the 42-yard line of san francisco 6 10 to go in the first half a bear going up on top for lonzel hill double covered he had griffin there as well as ronnie lott lonzell hill is the receiver that the saints are expecting big plays actually in their first meeting he had a fine game making three crucial catches going outside as you can see 29 griffin running stride for stride but the football was brought back to the inside if bobby aber had led the ball over the right outside shoulder of lonzell hill he might have made the catch second down and 10. dalton hilliard goes outside and hilliard nearly gets the first down before jim fonhorst makes the stop bringing up third and one once again for the saints they converted the last time around anytime you can continue getting third one third and one especially now in in the 49er territory you you give yourself an opportunity to go go for it on fourth down dick so if you can keep going third and one man that's the coach's dream other than that long pass to rice the saints defense has been tough but their offense has shown a lot better today than we've seen them third down and a long one dalton hilliard appears to have the first down and he does to the 30-yard line he had barry word blocking in front of him and another tackle for michael walter of the 49ers well this is a good day to watch tight ends block 85 hobie brenner in the left center of your screen are the saints boy look at the firing out right up inside that time of milt mccall 53 and just takes him inside and drives him to the ground outstanding i mean that right there should be you know photograph go ahead and frame it and send it to what the archive somewhere somewhere yeah really first and ten at the 30. saints trailing 7-3 hilliard stays in the backfield billiard again finds a hole and dalton hilliard with some nifty footwork gets to the 25-yard line a pickup of five stop by fagin and walter for the 49ers dalton hilliard was actually drafted ahead of reuben mays may's the top rookie rusher last year but hilliard gives him a tremendous one-two punch at that running back position thanks for coming in with three tight ends and putting tyce out on a wing back slot and it's a snap for the ball they're using tice to come down with two tight ends to lead the back mark patterson top of your screen on second and five gain of one maybe two and it was michael walter who matched his career best with 13 tackles against the saints in their first meeting of the season though the 49ers bring in their nickel package on third and three notice this is tice outside he leads in here he leads out here another tight end hooking and then dillian just i mean they're just coming down there finding a hole looking for some place to run slot back with actually brenner out wide two blocking tight ends third and three at the 23. up the middle and eric martin has it and a first down he was clobbered at the 14-yard line by ronnie lott but martin holds on to it and a gain of nine gives the saints added life and a first down hey bear coming back hillyard staying back going out no one inside as you can see the blitz by haley 94 the linebacker and then a bear reads it martin reads it pops into football first down martin did not have a catch against the 49ers in their first game but he's come on here in this game and that was a second and both of them have been big ones first and ten at the 15 of san francisco amen cliff benson was the closest receiver and that ball was thrown way over his hair saints featured the three tight ends put two one on one side two on the left side took both the outside tight ends dick went out wide and then they send brenner down the middle and it's a read he keys to safety that goes right or left what about bobby bear and his development as a quarterback well the thing that's happened is he said he's gotten more comfortable with the offense confidence he feels like he's coming around he still would like to be able to you know take a more active role in the offense but he doesn't call his own plays and he says i'm very happy in the role that i'm playing right now 13th play of the drive coming up second and ten kevin fagan on the tackle and we're going to wind down to our two-minute warning in a very fast moving second quarter so a chance for the saints to talk things over our two-minute warning is upon us cbs sports coverage of the national football league is sponsored by miller brewing company sole sponsor of the u.s olympic training centers the heartbeat of america today chevrolet and by the u.s army a place to be all you can be minutes remaining in the first half dick stockton and terry bradshaw the 49ers lead 7-3 but that lead is in jeopardy as the 49ers who have held the ball for six and a half minutes and are at the top of the nfl in time of possession will face a third down and five keep in mind they have converted all three of their third down attempts in this drive a bear incomplete intended for mike jones tim mckeyer and fuller defending so the 49ers hold on a big down and morton anderson will come in for the third time today he has converted one of two and will try to bring the saints to within a point anderson gave new orleans a lead on a 40-yard field goal that hit the upright and bounced back for the successive field goal and then missed the 41 yarder this is from 27. and this kick is good so anderson's two field goals brings the saints to within one reminiscent of the first time they played when it was anderson providing most of the offense steve young started the game for joe montana through a 46-yard touchdown pass to jerry rice for the seven points then suffered a mild concussion on the sidelines montana is back but it's 7-6 because morton anderson has been successful on two field goals and now anderson will be kicking off to the 49ers who have del rogers and harry sydney back going to rogers and he'll down at four yards in the end zone for a touchback 152 remaining and each team has the full complement of timeouts remaining and plenty of time for the likes of joe montana to get things going and right now we'll take a timeout at candlestick park and be back joe montana did not start he came in early in the second quarter when steve young went out with a slight concussion and already the saints expecting passes in the two-minute drill have johnny poe in as a nickel defensive back as the niners start first down on their own 20. montana has it knocked away by frank warren on the pass he's headed for roger craig steve young deck he has to be disappointed throwing the 46-yard touchdown pass to rice and having an opportunity and you know he even missed a little bit yeah it gets a little old sitting on that bench even though you're behind a great quarterback like montana but he had his chance to shine and he got the big touchdown in there unfortunate for him he's got a slight concussion and he won't see any more action today second and ten montana goes to rice who stays in bounds shy of a first down by about a yard it'll bring up a third and one jerry rice was the third receiver on this route as most offensive patterns run by the 49ers they flood one zone with three route with three receivers two of them that time came inside rice went outside and then montana when he got to the third receiver was rice two tight ends in there john frank joins russ francis third and one on the 29 and the second effort by roger craig good enough for a san francisco first down and jim wilkes makes the tackle and the time out called by the 49ers and a chance for us to remind you that coming up at halftime brendan erv will have scores and highlights of a busy sunday in the national football league and we'll take a break ourselves with a minute and 37 seconds to go in the half 49ers with only two timeouts left the 49ers have two timeouts remaining that's the time remaining in the first half they have a first and ten on their own 31-yard line joe montana by the way had his lowest completion percentage of the year against the saints in their first meeting his quick toss is incomplete and good defense that time by swellings on roger craig the 49ers before that play had had the ball for 217 and so you can see where the new orleans saints with their running and their passing they've opened it up more but still have used that possession to their benefit well if you can keep the ball away from montana's offense to this 49er offense you've got a better chance of winning second and ten that's why the saints are number one in that department montana parish is picked off by dave weimer weimer to the 30 winner to the 25 and down and a chance for the saints to do some business tom rathman on the tackle montana coming back looking to the right side picks up his first man passes him up and decides he'll gun it to the outside it's a good throw but boy the break on the ball by weimer 44. second interception of the game by the saints only the second interception of the year for weimer who was tied for second in the league with nine last year and montana has as many interceptions as completion since he's come in the ball game one of them was a deflection and that pass joe will admit he just forced that football in there and he shouldn't have saints with an opportunity here first and ten on the san francisco 23 and all three of their timeouts remaining hey bear being rushed and loses the ball and the 49ers may have it and a penalty marker is thrown they're going to call this a forward pass by a bear and they're going to say he threw it beyond the line of scrimmage which is a loss of down 49ers they want the ball they don't care about any incompleted pass and a penalty it appeared that a bear in in trying to pull back from throwing the pass actually made it look appear to be a fumble and that's what this is all about i think he was throwing the ball i think he was going to throw the football decided at the very last he was not trying to pull it back and the ball hit the ground we'll wait for the official signal 49ers vocal in that huddle bill walsh just waits for the call he's got the best idea and this is a very big call indeed in this ball game if it's rule of fumble 49er football otherwise it's a loss it down hey let's look at this dick now a bear gets outside he doesn't know whether he's going to throw it or run it he gets outside he looks downfield sees the receiver come back he punched the football my view is he was throwing the ball let's look at it again let's see if he was going to throw it and just see the reason i say this is because the ball goes down at the ground right at his feet not down the field pulls back i think he was pumping to pull the corner off the receiver he was going to pull it back and then throw the pass i think this is a fake and he dropped the football upon a review upon a review by the instant replay it will be ruled as an incomplete pass they reviewed the video tape and now bill walsh is enraged on the sideline and apparently the penalty marker is still thrown he crossed the line of scrimmage exactly so why was the flag thrown they're saying he didn't cross the line of scrimmage so please explain to me the flag i'd like to know about the flag they should say we're picking up the flag or no penalty exactly if there is no penalty that way i guess it wasn't bill walsh is asking a lot of questions the crowd is upset and now an official's time what about the penalty we need an explanation of the penalty okay if he indeed did not throw did not cross the line of scrimmage and there's no there's no flag then what we need to explain to all these folks is no penalty we're picking the flag up no penalty well you're not going to get the explanation my friend well the fans are going to continue second down and 10 on the 23. crazy play that time 111 remaining in the first half reuben mays gets to the 20-yard line and michael walter and company make the tackle under a minute to play i'm not sure how the saints are going to play this they may just be setting themselves up to go for a field goal to take a leave before the end of this first half the way they're taking their time well i've criticized their two-minute offense before they have three timeouts remaining and yet they insist on just letting it run out and kick a field goal this time they might throw the football into the end zone i have no idea in the shotgun is bobby a bear third and seventh penalty marker down a bear incomplete eric martin and two flags now fly we'll get the explanation we hope from bob frederick 21 seconds remain in this first half regardless of the penalty it looked like jim mora's team wasn't in any hurry to get something going it's against new orleans exactly it was an illegal snap was an illegal snap by the offense illegal snap let's see if let's see if the center hillgenberg draws the defense there it is right see him draw the football when he drop when he just barely drove the football along the line of scrimmage everyone on the defense exploded and then he followed through with the snap that's kind of like enticing them to jump off sides you can't do that third and 12 back to the 25. hey bear goes down 16 seconds to go larry roberts and clyde glover and a loss of eight yards and terry the saints were in golden opportunity to try to get seven it looked like they wanted to sit on it to get three and they may not even get three backfired on them when you sit on the football and you dictate to the defense make things easy we saw earlier run didn't call timeouts now a bear goes back he fumbles the football comes back again and he's sacked timeout called by the saints with 16 seconds left it's fourth down and 22 way back at the 34-yard line but terry if the tim moore and the saints were just wanting to get three points why would they go in the shotgun the play backfired from the time before they ran with a pass or a ram with the ball then it came out in the shotgun trying to make up the loss of yardage so i don't understand it might as well go on and run the football and made it easier field goal attempt for anderson a 51-yard attempt by morton anderson is good the longest this year was 49 and now morton anderson has exploded one for 51 yards his third field goal of the ball game has given the new orleans saints a 9-7 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the first half but they really have to sweat this one out missed a 52-yarder to win the game in new orleans come back today and nails this one so this guy can kick him probably kick him from 60 yards conditions are right well the first time these teams played anderson kicked five field goals the saints managed one touchdown and so far it looks like a carbon copy he has three field goals new orleans hasn't been able to score despite some golden opportunities but they lead in the game nine to seven and you know you always have to think that hey look fellas we don't get these opportunities to score that often we have got to score some touchdown and as a player you think boy nine points is great it's nice to have them but sure would be nice to have a couple of touchdowns to go along with one field goal and you know you feel a little comfortable about it but against the 49ers in montana you can't you can never be comfortable with field goals you got to have touchdowns del rodgers is deep fourth in the nfc and kickoff returns coming into this game and anderson with 10 seconds to go kicks off deep into the end zone and rogers will down it with that much time remaining but it's like pulling teeth for the saints to try to get six points on the scoreboard and if jim mora wants to get the saints to where they should be it's going to be awfully tough with the offense struggling the way they do well next saturday we have a big college football doubleheader on cbs beginning at noon eastern time notre dame impressive in demolishing alabama yesterday goes against penn state who are upset by pitt i'm about to pitch upsetting them all tim brown will be in action and then a doubleheader game two look at this matchup it'll be the best of the year oklahoma against nebraska one of these teams will have a great shot at the national championship both will go to a major bowl number one ranked oklahoma against second ranked nebraska a very special doubleheader day of college football next saturday right here on cbs we're going to have a re-kick here the kicking team was offsides the saints and there was a flag up field and so martin anderson will do it again nice ball look at the ball laid in the end zone there you go pick it up get it off the field for no other reason and rogers could get hurt going back there again harry sydney on the left and del rogers on the right for the 49ers 10 seconds to go anderson's been a busy man this time he kicks it over towards sydney's side on the 12th and sydney brings it out to the 36 yard line gene atkins makes the tackle leaving four seconds on the clock before this first half is history and it's been kind of a strange first half well it has been we're seeing montana in the same strain circumstances of which he's playing with steve young starting montana wanting to play really upset about it now he's had the opportunity and unfortunate for him he's had two interceptions one of them leading to a field goal by the saints he gives them the lead two completions and two interceptions for joe montana john taylor joins mike wilson and dwight clark three wide receivers to the right on the hail mary situation but montana goes down tony elliott gets the sack ass the first half comes to an end and after one half of play here at candlestick park to score the saints nine and the 49ers seven cbs sports coverage of the national football league is sponsored by oldsmobile quality feel it at your nearest old mobile dealer metropolitan life and affiliated companies get met it pays and by magnavox when you're just a little smarter people notice magnavox smart very smart on this sunday herschel walker put his money where his mouth has been set me free he yelled to tom landry and so come on come on walker and a baby he explains it all the time and the greek comes up a winner of cross 23 to 17. i talked to hershel last night and he said you know i feel more comfortable at tailback i don't want to play wide receive i can do my thing there well he ran up about two-thirds of the cowboys offense today okay now meanwhile over in the afc folks the indianapolis colts certainly appear to be for real they explode for 40 points here comes albert bentley on the draw how did eric dickerson do 30 carries 154 yards and a touchdown in greek he didn't fumble it's all right i'll give him his 200 000 back this week and you'll take it too that's the first win by the colts over the dolphins incidentally since 1980. all right how about the jets they went on monday night tough to go on the road they played in a driving rainstorm in kansas city watch ken o'brien nimble footed oh yeah that's good give it up here comes freeman mcneil to rush 26 times for 184 yards on the day earth quiet day when a quarterback gets in trouble he knows where to go right now they beat a team that lost seven in a row come on longest losing streak in history now eight straight for the chiefs here are the standings meanwhile in the afc east and look who's tied for first it is the colts and the jets at five and four meanwhile back in the nfc now the story of the afternoon as far as the quarterback situation is concerned doug williams replaced jay schroeder during the game and he did some job boy he was really red-hot here he connects with gary clark on a 42-yard touchdown pass so this is a big play for lotteries first of all no one thought that gibbs would make a substitution at quarterback as long as he had a healthy starting point listen to me yeah hey wait a minute fellas so it's nice to have daryl green too you know only three interceptions in that uh secondary against chuck long here this afternoon and that sealed up the win for the redskins now meanwhile the los angeles rams and the st louis cardinals and for once the cardinals cannot come from behind and pull it out they lose and what a date charles white had jimmy the greek here's a 47-yard scoring run you know what coach robinson said about him he is one of the strongest men if not the strongest man he's ever seen on a football field three seconds remaining and mike lansford hit a 20-yarder to beat the cardinals white overall carried 34 times for 213 yards in that win so the nfc east standings now look this way as the cardinals fall to three and six there are the washington redskins leading the dallas cowboys by two games back now in the afc central and a team to watch the cleveland browns this club could go all the way to the super bowl remember that bernie cosar looks terrific er well i'm sure he has he has for all year river hurry it's uh webster slaughter who goes in for 52 yard touchdown after catching under one of those close hard passes now watch what he does when he gets in the end zone everybody forgets that cleveland was within two minutes of being in the super bowl last year one great drive by elway and i'll tell you there's a surprise team stalking them and the greek is beaming over this one too folks 23-3 houston with a huge win and irv what about warren moon well he really looked neat here you know very calm under pressure letting the ball go here hitting drew hill on a 42-yard touchdown pass cleveland's at houston next week too that is the big one isn't it down in the dome listen jimmy that oiler defense three interceptions they held ernest jackson to one yard rushing today what a job now the standings show the browns and the oilers right at the top at six and three and pittsburgh a game behind them right now all right in the minnesota vikings this is a team with a chance to make certainly a wild card and maybe better they were impressive again today er well tommy kramer steve jordan is tied in here for a two yard touchdown pass the most important thing there is the fact that tommy kramer plays listen there's another important thing that they beat tampa in their own division for a wild card birth exactly take a look at the standings as a result of that jimmy there are the bears sitting on top at 7-1 tough game tomorrow night out in denver minnesota could be only two behind him if the broncos you like the broncos a little bit at home on monday night yeah but i'm not that crazy about him i thought you were a little bit reluctant about that and we will continue with the nfl on cbs after this these games are still in progress now not at the half yet out in seattle and the seahawks have taken advantage of a blocked punt and then craig scrambled in for a touchdown 21-13 they lead the packers cincinnati and atlanta now three-nothing the bengals over the falcons new orleans and san francisco the one you're watching three morton anderson field goals there 9-7 and the giants in philadelphia they have gone to the half tied at 10 randall cunningham scrambled in for the eagle touchdown and we will continue with the second half of your game here on cbs in just a moment we're back at candlestick park in san francisco and at halftime the new orleans saints lead the san francisco 49ers 9-7 martin anderson's third field goal of the game for the saints with 10 seconds to go gave them the lead so at this point how do you look at this ball game only one touchdown the big pass from young who's not in the game anymore to rice and the saints who had an opportunity to score but passed it up and barely got three i think that's really the key i believe the saints to win this football game are going to have to get touchdowns and not field goals and the reason for that very simply is i believe joe montana is mad right now and he's going to come out in the second half and do the things that joe does best that's five and six and ten yard passes to move his team down the field let's talk about one of the most talked about and maybe controversial plays in the game it happened toward the end of the half and the question was was bobby a bear throwing a pass for an incompletion did he fumble the ball on a play or did he go in addition to that over the line of scrimmage now they reviewed the tapes upstairs and finally decided that a bear threw an incompleted pass and no penalty was assessed and the 49ers would have recovered the ball had there have been a fumble let's take a look at that play again and we got a confirmation tell us about it well what it is is it appears to all of us that he crossed the line of scrimmage or that was a controversy and that this was not a pass but a fumble so first of all the side judge said he did go across the line of scrimmage the far side judge said no he did not and that the hand going forward actually was one and a half yards behind the original line of scrimmage thus an incomplete pass well so that the saints were able to keep the ball but again the big question is the fact that they have uh decided not to go in they have scored one touchdown in two games yet they have the lead nine to seven well it's nice to have the lead but once again i believe i do not believe that field goals are going to be the real significant here although it's nice right now i believe that they're going to have to score uh a bear has tried to throw the football in the first half and i think he's thrown it very well in the second half i'd look for maze and hilliard coming out and running a little bit more maybe but i believe they've got to score touchdowns i don't think you can stop montana no one ever has now you said montana was a bit angry over things at one point he had two completions and two interceptions and of course he is coming off the ball game and not starting in the ball game and young young began the game and it looked like that even despite the interceptions that the hand was not bothering joe montana he threw the ball well the second interception was a bullet and he and i mean i had a lot on it dick and you know and friday he said he could throw saturday was even better and then of course today he's thrown the ball well he just hasn't had the success that he wants but two for four here's the interception that he's going to pick up that weimer's going to come in weimer actually does a fine job of coming out of his coverage he reads montana and breaks on the football makes a heck of an interception that gives new orleans the football and allows him to come down and get the field goal eller was the intended receiver on that play and that was the second interception ricky jackson picked off another one but steve young did a terrific job he was five for six for 80 yards or so and uh the big touchdown pass and a beauty to jerry rice well the real key was when he fell down brett maxi number 39 the free safety in the center of your screen he pulls up and then of course steve young with rice going in behind max he lays it out with his strong arm and rice makes the 46 yard td reception for rice that was his seventh touchdown of the season and going into the ball game he was tied for the conference lead with d.j joser of the minnesota vikings who had scored six coming into the game and there is steve young who is throwing on the sidelines and of course it'll be a while before the 49ers get possession as washing will kick off bobby a bear who will bring out the saints with the first offensive foray in the second half he broke a foot against the 49ers here at candlestick park last year so he doesn't have fond memories of this place he broke a foot and he had problems he lost his job he's gotten that job back but the problem that bobby has is he just needs more experience gain confidence and i think really more than anything coaches need to gain confidence in him and open up their offense mercy will kick off and mel gray will return a kick off 101 yards for a touchdown last year against the niners feels this on the one-yard line gray breaks a couple of tackles and brings it out nicely to the 35-yard line before dana mclemore makes the stop a 33-yard return by mel gray ball control that's been the number one reason for the saints success on offense and the saints have a five-minute edge over the 49ers in time of possession in the first half turnovers also favor new orleans and so does the game everything has favored new orleans and getting they're getting the breaks and now they've got to capitalize and take it down first and ten at the 35-yard line reuben mays was divided through defenders including tim mckayer and a loss on the play of a couple tina turner also in on the play and brenner involved with turner and they have to separate those two athletes well tight ends on linebackers has been the real success story today i think for the saints and brenner and keena turner have been tying it up 85 coming in once again notice the hands out inside the shoulders the numbers of turner and what keenan is hollering about he's saying look you held me and so many works yeah something like that second and 12 back to the 33. hitch goes to maze brenner puts a block on and the 49ers fight off the block and don griffin comes up from the secondary to make a tackle on maze picks up three yards on the play so it'll be third and long for the saints every time the saints have flexed out brenner and brought tyce back in the slot they've run that way and all they've done is gone outside so maybe later we might see a little pass maybe the saints have an option pass where they set that up throw the ball to maze let him string it out and then pull up and throw it downfield third down and 10. saints have been pretty much successful on third down situations today a bear has time and dumps it off to dalton hilliard hilliard will get the first down and dives forward towards midfield and once again the saints with another first down on a third down conversion this good for 15 yards well the real secret is you'll notice outside man man man look at these guys the receivers have come down inside clear out all of this and then they'll bring hilliard around pull the guards and tackles a little screen no one there and the big yardage for the first down there's the snap notice the receivers now as they go inside the corners turn and run with them first down at the 49-yard line dalton hilliard the one set back gets the call and runs right into the defense makaire and the 49er secondary especially the cornerbacks have been forcing the run nicely today well a good job also by michael carter nose tackle number 95 for san francisco looping around the outside of the center hilgenberg getting out there and mckay or tim mckay the left corner number 22 getting nose trouble notice how fast that he's coming up to support the run if you see that you come back in the huddle receiver says hey look this guy's really firing off i'm going to go buy him 22 left your screen notice that right off the bat he forgets about the receiver and runs up inside and allows hilliard no room to run second down and 12 at the 47. reuben mays back in and reuben mays gets the call breaks a tackle and carries it to the 43-yard line of san francisco jim fonhorst makes the tackles about three and a half yards shy of a first down and brings up another third down situation for the saints well you bring maize in you bring hilliard in you take one out you send one in and you get a double whammy you know from that running back spot they've averaged about 170 yards a game just in running offense with those two backs and jim mora has successfully spotted mays and hilliard so that maze hasn't been overworked as he was in the first game third and three at the san francisco 43. a bear's pass is caught by mike jones but follows down the sideline and jones will go in for the score mike jones beat tim mckeyer mckeyer missed a tackle and jones goes in for his second touchdown reception of the year you can see how upset makaiah is as the saints have moved out in front now 15-7 bobby hey bear credit by the a bear going to the receiver with the defensive back was way off this time it had to be mckay 22 laying off of jones jones makes the catch mckeyer gambles and then all of a sudden jones breaks loose and goes all the way for a touchdown when you gamble you pay for it morton anderson who has three field goals now in to try to add the 16th point of the ball game and the kick is good anderson has been perfect on p-a-t's this year and there's mike jones in his second year wired from the minnesota vikings a year ago notice mackeyer is way off of jones on the outside it's about eight yards off a bear reads this turns around and throws to the receiver that's going to get him the first down now makaire who gambles he misses and then jones outruns him all the way in for the touchdown and the saints have scored on their last three possessions next saturday the game of the year oklahoma nebraska on cbs 4. the new orleans saints leading 16-7 and the biggest lead for either team mike jones who caught the touchdown the first score of the game for the saints to give them a lead morton anderson kicking off to del rodgers at the goal line penalty markers fly as rogers is stopped by james haynes after bringing it out to the 23. so it'll be up to joe montana to try to generate something personal foul clip from the kick return team and that'll make things even more difficult for mr montamper and the numbers of player number 44. tom rathman he'll spot the ball just inside the 10-yard line and joe montana bringing out the 49ers 11 15 remaining here in the third quarter montana two of six for 18 yards first down roger craig out to the 14 before jim wilkes makes the tackle stop by wilkes and the 14 yard line second down next sunday on cbs the nfl today the bears who have a date tomorrow against the broncos go against a familiar opponent the lions 49ers play tampa bay atlanta and minnesota the vikings won a big one today and the giants against the saints montana finds craig who goes out of bounds chased there by ricky jackson and a penalty marker down and jackson is arguing what appears to be a late hit call against him the saints doing good job of coverage not allowing montana to get the football down on the eight to ten mile first full foul on the defense number 57 tackling the offensive man out of bounds first down forcing montana to throw his outlet passes with little reserves there it is out of bounds and there's the hit they're claiming that jackson hit him laid out of bounds boy they're calling them close i i can't see these calls but uh i don't guess you can touch a guy once he actually absolutely clears the playing field so the 49ers who do not have the first down on that play certainly do now out to the 32-yard line first down montana pumps and wide open on the other sideline is craig craig is brought down at the 37-yard line by antonio gibson the strong safety with help from sam mills clark craig has caught five passes now for 21 yards and coming into the game with the leading all-purpose producer in the national football league last week montana was 36 for 42 42-36-49 and the thing about it is he only had 280 yards out of so his passes are a control type five six yards i believe if he just goes five and six yards hey the saints you know they might stop all that stuff fumble craig loses the ball and jackson is in on it and it's recovered by craig and that might have been disaster for the 49ers and right now they have to think they're out of sync offensively well there's no continuity montana comes out and the thing that walsh will do when he starts joel montana he will sometimes come out and throw 5-6 even as many as 10 passes in a row all of a sudden montana is getting five yards seven yards five yards 15 break a tackle 35 and today coming in not practiced all week he hasn't had that luxury hasn't found the real rhythm yet third down and eight after 34 dwight clark has come in he has yet to catch a pass montana's toss to mike wilson is good enough for a first down for the 49ers for the 44. and here's a guy who has really taken a lot of the heat off of rice who gets doubled and mike wilson who is big and has had some big games against the new orleans saints including a touchdown in the first meeting made a big catch there for another first down 8 45 to go third quarter saints with a touchdown leading the 49ers 16-7 rathman gets the call and the fullback storms his way into saint territory close to another first down and brett saxey makes the stop counter action in bruce colley 69 and harris barton the right tackle both leading their 69 kali the right guard barton right behind him leading up inside and then rathman going off their blocks goes up for the first down first carry of the game for tom rathman as maxie made the stop and nothing but praise as they measure for the first down from bill walsh who said that rathman is as good a blocking running back as he's seen in the game today bill walsh once made the statement that the offense of the 80s will be a two-back offense not a one-back offense and he was looking for a fullback so that he could move craig over and utilize craig as a runner and a receiver and let rathman get the tough yardage and block it joe cribs comes into the ball game he's been hampered with a knee injury the last couple of games he's in there with rathman on second down and one niners on the saints 46. craftsman is stopped and may not have made it let's see if the second effort was successful tony elliott was the first to get to it well the thing about that if rathma kept moving his legs and as the side judge came running into market rather kept moving kept moving kept moving and by the time he got to him it appeared he made the first down it is a first down for the 49ers and hard work by tom rathman out of nebraska this is just his third nfl start white clark in there is the third wide receiver for san francisco montana looks one way finds harassment as a receiver and making the stop is pat swilling at the 44-yard line of the saints and the report on roger craig is that he has a slight concussion there he is on the 49er bench well if he's out of the ball game now what they lose is they lose a back that can run for a thousand and catch passes for a thousand maybe that's why we're seeing clark in there and now rathman will be the guy that will be carrying the brunt of their running game but look for montana to continue throwing the little short passes they've worked percentage-wise he's a perfect four for four here in the second half now on second and eight at the 44-yard line montana drills it and it's tipped away by a saint intended for mike wilson and brett maxwell the free safety depending on the play and of course the saints have revamped their secondaries since the last time these two teams have played well they've gotten you people antonio gibson coming in he's starting at strong safety weimar is the only guy at left corner that's really the steady van jake's moved over it right and they're bringing in a young kid named reggie sutton a lot and nickel along with along with johnny post so they've moved their corners and their weak safety back and forth speaking of johnny poe he's in there as a nickel back as you look at the scores and highlight plays of the earlier contest 49ers a four or five on third down plays you need eight yards montana to wilson knocked away dave weimer hit wilson it was an incompleted pass all the way and good coverage by the same secondary anytime you lay the football out like this on a long way to go you're really going to lay somewhat up you kind of hold them up for the backs to make a move on it there's the path a little bit high for wilson but as you can see there weimer once again came out of his coverage red montana and reacted to the football and max reneker is kicking and the first punt of the game for either side mel gray goes back running trying to get it inside the 20-yard line a fair catch called for by gray it takes a 49er bounce and is down at the one-yard line by ron heller so running makes his first punt and the first punt by either side of beauty timeout seven minutes remaining in the third quarter the saints lead the 49ers who have won seven straight games that's the best they've done since the seven game winning streak in 84 the year they won a super bowl but now the 49ers have the saints backed up to their own five-yard line they go with reuben mays and maze loses a yard jeff fuller the strong safety jeff bullard is mirroring the tight end hobie brenner when brunner goes in motion fuller 49 runs with him and what the saints have done so far in the first two and a half quarters here in the third quarter now is go to the two tight end side and throwing the ball to the backs and running them on that side well uh fuller a presence on defense for the 49ers second down and 12 6 20 remaining in this third quarter three tight end alignment for the saints ruben mays gets it off to the five and that's all it'll be third down at about nine or ten pete coogler on the tackle and terry bradshaw has his supporters here took me all night to put that up i'll tell you what this to be i don't know if you'd be a good supreme court justice but i like you where you are right now thank you richard i appreciate it back to this game this is you know you got a couple of choices here do you run the football and and put hanson in a chance which would be a pun here or do you pass it what type of pass would you use what we've seen from the 49ers in this situation has been blitzes and they've been very successful at stopping a bear whatever it is the saints feel it is important enough to talk over and they have used up one of their timeouts here in this second half to discuss things when we come back it'll be third and ten for the saints on their own five yard line you're looking at carl smith offensive coordinator for the saints timeout by a bear probably over there and carl's telling him look we're in this situation they're going to blitz they're going to do this they're going to do that be cool read it make your right decision but don't throw the ball don't give up an interception billiard has come in for mays on third and 10 at the 5. a bear is going deep for martin and is knocked away incomplete and it's don griffin who made the play downfield it's fourth down and right now we're going to send you to new york for a report on the giant eagle battle going on now well dick here's how the eagles took that lead on the giants randall cunningham who is run for one scares the dickens out of the giant defense they leave byers open and they score back today brian hanson will kick from the back of the end zone don griffin is at midfield and a fine kick by hanson griffin back to his 44 bobbles it and goes down at midfield a 51-yard kick by brian hanson gets the saints out of danger joel hilkenberg made the tackle but the 49ers will have terrific field position with five minutes and 14 seconds remaining in this third quarter and trailing by nine would you like to be uh one of those guys that could put one of those little meters on your on a punter's arm and you know check his blood pressure out i can't imagine what it would be like standing with your back foot back on that white line in the end zone having to punt good out there with a guy holding this thing you know while he's ready craig and harry sydney are in the backfield craig is back and the pass to sydney behind the line and he's going deep to jerry rice he's got it touchdown it'll go as a lateral harry sydney an option quarterback fired a perfect pass to jerry rice who has caught his second touchdown pass of the game from 50 yards out and the 49ers have come now within three points of the saints ray worship with montana holding will try to make it a 16-14 affair and he does zarice has caught three passes but two of those for a big touchdown strike montana dropping back sydney 24 will bowl back deep behind the line of scrimmage this is a lateral but to weimer it appears to be a forward pass he comes up to make the tackle and holy holy cow he's got antonio gibson way underneath rice who gets behind him for the touchdown and this crowd is alive again that's the towel on the back of jerry rice flash 80 and that's exactly what he's been this afternoon touchdown catches of 50 and 46 yards to account for the 49er touchdowns at 16 to 14. ray wirshing will kick off mel gray is back but this is dalton hilliard at the five and hilliard stopped by the 30-yard line by dana mclemore what you're going to see is a res a zone that rotated to rice to take away rice now weimer 44 comes up rice makes a little hook move and then antonio gibson the strong safety that was rotating to take away the deep pass that side rice he fell for it he goes underneath rice and rice makes the touchdown reception eight touchdowns for jerry rice this year and he should have the nfc lead first and ten saints on their own 30 leading by 16 to 14. a bear going up top incomplete he was looking for cliff benson and jeff fuller was covering downfield excellent call i like this call coming out on first down and a bear had the option that time of three receivers picked out one laid it up there and unfortunately for him it was incomplete but the idea of coming out you've run now and you come out you've got room here to throw the football so i think it was a good decision to do that second and ten hilliard inside goes nowhere michael walter and it's third down interestingly enough terry with a bear kind of opening it up and going more to the air game today reuben mays who had 144 yards the first time these teams played this year has gained only 19 yards and eight carries what they're doing to stop maids as they're taking their tackles over shifting them to the tight end not allowing a bear an opportunity to audible when he sets his line they shift their line and he can't get out of it third and ten hey bear in trouble jeff stover and larry roberts and the third sack of the game for the 49ers 94 charles haley coming off the football to the outside he is a pass rush specialist he just splits that time dombrowski the left tackle then on the other side his partner larry roberts 91 he beats his man and beats roberts to the football haley that is to the football for the sack roberts the first pick for the niners last year and brian hansen is in to kick it away from the five don griffin is back for the 49ers with exactly four minutes remaining in this third quarter the saints regaining or having the lead here in the third quarter but the niners regaining the momentum on the big sydney to rice 50-yard strike and a good kick by hanson will send griffin way back to the 25. and down he goes so hanson gets the saints out of danger again reggie sutton making the tackle out of danger until someone pulls a wild play and a 58-yard kick well next saturday cbs sports presents what promises to be the most exciting day of college football this year starting at noon eastern time the front runner for the heisman trophy tim brown will be on display again 7th ranked notre dame against last year's national champion penn state followed by the most eagerly anticipated game of the year oklahoma that's right folks the number one ranked sooners against nebraska cornhusks huskers very special double day hitter double a double hitter here today college football yes penalty marker down before the snap you're right it is a double header all starts number 69 on the offense first down right guard bruce colley that time well for those people who say well wait a second we heard the oklahoma fights on where's in nebraska well here they are well here they are first and 15. following the penalty montana has the niners back on their own 18-yard line joe's pass incomplete intended for mike wilson ball bounced in front of wilson covering was van jakes montana grabbing his hand that time he held the football held it hella very till he absolutely had to get rid of it it looks like that when you release the football he hit a defender with that hand because you can see he's grabbing that finger and there's steve young signaling in the plays i don't know that i would trust steve young he's had a concussion he might be sitting in the wrong place who knows must not be hurt that badly though if he's able to stick you know signal in place i think bill walsh would find out real things i think you're right second and 15. craig holds on to it but he can't get any momentum going and vaughn johnson comes in and makes the tackle talking to bill walsh about montana in friday's practice and he feels that montana has rededicated himself to the game both physically and mentally and wall says that he's the same way they're both more in focus you can have a lot of success along with success as a football player comes a lot of money and in in this day and time a lot of money is in the form of millions and and wall said he's made millions of dollars now he's uh you know rededicated and excited about playing again dwight clark you saw in there three wide receivers on third and 17. montana goes to rathman and rathman is wrestled down by pat swilling at the 19-yard line and with 241 remaining in the third quarter max reneker will come in and punt for san francisco yeah i'll tell you the linebackers for the saints today have absolutely taken away the zones there's no areas for montana to throw the football in there and what he's having to do is just dump it off and then the great reaction by the linebackers to get up and stop them from making the first downs there's mel gray back for the saints each team has scored a touchdown here in the third quarter and on the run is gray at midfield trying to get ahead of steam but he loses his footing on the natural grass picks up only five on the return and is stopped at the 47 by tom rathman mike lansford's field goal gave the rams a much needed win they were one and seven dickerson with a big day and the colts five and four the jets are also five and four and that amazing afc east race minnesota improves their playoff hopes the browns win houston they stay tied for the lead the redskins now 7-2 overtime wins walker with a big 60-yard run saints first and ten on the san francisco 47. they bear going for lonzel hill and it's just beyond him incomplete defending his tim mckay both 49ers cornerbacks makaire and griffin have been strong defenders this afternoon well both of them intercepted a pass last week and coming off that game against the olders feeling good but look at this excellent dive just to stretch out and knock the ball away now at the end a bear getting rid of getting getting rid of the football spun around by the defensive back but hey that's no big deal quarterbacks get hit every time second and 10. this time with ruben made and mays to the 43-yard line will bring up a third and seven fuller and walter on the stop and right now for a report on the giant eagle game let's check in with brent musberger in new york brent dickets fourth and goal for the new york giants jeff rutledge who's gone all the way replacing the injured phil sims hands off to george adams the extra point is good 17 all in philly back to death we're back and an injury on the field john tice one of the saints tight ends is shaken up right now tyson made a tremendous catch on hillyard adoption pass last week against the rams they're still talking about it now being tended to by the medical corps of the saints well he'd been watching the willie mays uh with joe marciano the tight end coach had been watching willie mays in that series and how that catch that he made 54. in the series you remember that one and so they were making fun saying boy what a great catch and so tyce made that over the head catch with him hands down low and made a beautiful catch off of hillard's pass and then they call him say hey say hey tyce vic warts hit it and mays caught it and tice emulated willie mays but right now tyce goes to the sidelines it'll be third down and six jones goes to the left martin and hill to the right and they bring in hilliard as well they have three wide receivers including hill to the right on third and six hey bears toss is intercepted by ronnie lock one man to beat is a bear and ronnie lott with his first interception of the year after leading the national football league with 10 last season hey bear said three receivers to the right that's nowhere to go we're going up here where it's man on man but the problem is the routes to the inside as you can tell there and all that it does is allow ronnie lott to read a bear's eyes and break off his throw and and good for a lot was that the receiver was coming right at him made it very easy for him he returned to fumble 33 yards the first time they played this was a 34-yard run and now rathman on first down after 31 gets two yards to the 29 before sam mills makes the tackle so ronnie lott who has said he was impressed with the running game of the saints and he's been a kind of a gambler throughout his career and uh a physical presence well he moved into free safety to take away from the hitting they didn't want him have to hit so much putting him back there and allowing to use his eyes his excellent ability to read the quarterback he's playing a free safety and he broke well on the ball that time to make the interception harry sydney replaces rasmus taking up penalty marker down roger craig stopped by antonio gibson at the 26-yard line they mark it at the 27th illegal motion on the offense illegal motion two men moving on the offense and the penalty will be declined well two men can't move at the same time one can move once he said another can move darth vader in the huddle for the 49ers third down and six penalty marker down and is stopped behind the line by frank warren and we may have a holding call against san francisco 49ers were in field goal but randy cross was guilty of holding you can see right in the center of your screen 51's the center randy cross montana will come back he sees the safety moving overnight turns to the left and goat gets ready to fire the football his man is covered as you see craig is well covered now he moves back to his right and crossed with his hands out holds well they declined the penalty so it is fourth down and ray worship has come in to try a three-pointer so they'd rather have worse you can try a 47-yard field goal then move them out of range and give them an extra down smart call this is to give the 49ers a lead if he can make it and the kick is blocked and is picked up it's picked up by johnny po and johnny po is in there let's see what they call it it is not a touchdown i don't believe because the ball might have been kicked no touchdown and now they say it is a score johnny po gets credit for the touchdown sutton blocked it reggie sutton on the block and the score a 58-yard run you're going to see the block coming off right instead of your screen 29 reggie sutton and now you're going to see poe waiting right there for it he will go all the way for the touchdown reminiscent of the first game when max reneger the punter had his punt blocked in the air by alvin tolles who picked it off and ran it in for a touchdown so i would say right now the saints special teams have the upper hand on the 49ers and this place is stunned and you'll watch the reaction of jim mora as instead of worshiping possibly giving the 49ers a one-point lead it is now 22-14 in favor of the saints with morton anderson conversion is good and it new is in front 23-14 very unusual to see field goals or extra points blocked coming from the outside it takes a special athlete to do that three seconds remain in the third quarter and the saints lead the 49ers 23 to 14. so a block field goal attempt by reggie sutton and johnny po ran at 47 yards for the score and a big break for the saints as they lead 23-14 and right now we're going to send you to a cbs news special report let's go to charles osgood in new york from cbs news this is a special report i'm charles osgood there has been a plane crash in denver a continental airlines flight at dc-9 taking off in a snowstorm for boise idaho flight 1713 flipped over on the runway and skidded down the runway upside down for about a quarter of a mile before coming to a stop some passengers were thrown from the fuselage others are apparently trapped in the wreckage so far it has been confirmed that at least 12 people have been killed and there are many casualties we don't know quite how many you believe that there were 76 passengers aboard and a crew of five that would be a total of 81 people aboard the flight that is the information that we have as of now about a plane crash at stapleton international airport in denver we'll have more details later on this station and i'll have more on the cbs sunday night news this is charles osgood back here in san francisco that's the end of the third quarter the score 23-14 we now pause for a word from your local station this is cbs cbs sports coverage of the national football league is sponsored by cadillac motorcar company discover why the only way to travel is cadillac style chick maker of shake plus disposable and super two plus blades for the easy touch and by rca the most trusted name in electronics we're back at candlestick park in san francisco this is dick stockton and terry bradshaw we start the fourth quarter 49ers have a first and ten on their 35-yard line trailing by nine points russ francis the intended receiver loses the ball it's an incompleted pass with ricky jackson defending and let's go back a bit terry on the decision to decline the penalty against san francisco and forcing the long field goal attempt and you said it was a right call and it turned out to be righter than anyone knew well absolutely the special teams for the saints have certainly been improved over the last few years and the block registering to block that kick coming around from the outside is the hardest way to do it normally they're blocked up the middle but to dive and extend himself was a great effort it'll be second and ten for montana on the 35. this time it's craig breaks a tackler and is brought down at the 38-yard line by dave weimer sam mills also in on the play so here's the story of this game the 49ers coming in with a seven-game winning streak and a big two-game lead over the saints knowing that if they were to win this game they would just about wrap things up in the division because a three-game lead with six to play having beaten the saints twice would have given william enough margin but now if the saints hold on to their lead in this fourth quarter they're in the race certainly helping themselves in the wild card at least third down and six montana gets out of trouble and he finds russ francis first down into saint territory stopped by antonio gibson at the 45 of new orleans gain of 16. takes a special athlete with a special field to be able to avoid these sacks now you can see right here wilkes has montana he ducks under him like houdini he comes up and then he finds francis crossing credit this to montana not his running ability not his scrambling ability but his great sense of presence and what how to react under real adverse conditions and the first catch of the game for the veteran russ francis another play action call montana has wide open john frank he's inside the 25 22 yards that time weimer on the tackle another first down dwight clark 87 takes his man extremely deep that time there's no one laid out on the outside and now you're going to see 86 frank who will come out across and run deep into the area where clark cleared for him and he's wide open for the reception he's the best blocking tight end the niners have but showed his ability as a receiver first and ten on the 23 craig slipped up and is knocked back at the 20-yard line he'll get credit for a three-yard gain pat swilling and sam mills those two of those outstanding linebackers on the stop and plenty of time in this game a nine-point lead against joe montana doesn't really mean that much of the twelve not a lot and the reason they're running the football is to set up their play action the linebackers or the saints are so aggressive and they haven't really been able to do anything running the football but they play action it freezes them and montana can go in behind them second down and seven and smack hard you can hear it all the way up here no gain on the play maybe loss of a yard antonio gibson the strong safety with a good hit you can see it antonio gibson 27 sneaking up at the very last ricky jackson coming around and forcing craig to jump over him and while he's extending in the air number 27 the strong safety antonio gibson just really nails him russ francis limps off the field now well ron heller 89 will take his place and he's certainly been playing well well frank is in there 86. third down and eight montana across the middle of rice and rice is brought down five yard shy of a first down by johnny po and it'll be fourth down and ray wirshing will check into the game you always like to get rice crossing the field because if he gets the defensive back trailing and catches the football then he'll go for the touchdown but as you notice no one's with him it's a zone they're just sitting there waiting on him and then finally johnny po 25 makes the stop so if he's got man coverage you get easy six fifth zone you just catch it for four or five yards montana will hold for ray worship who missed the 46-yarder this is a 34-yard attempt and the kick is good and a big field goal for the 49ers because now they trailed by six and a touchdown and a conversion would give them the lead again 10 44 remaining in the fourth quarter it's now 23 to 17. this nfl game summary is sponsored by seagram's coolers this is where the fun starts here's our game summary and the saints off three turnovers have scored 13 points jerry rice two spectacular touchdown receptions joe montana in a reserve role starting to get cooking after two early interceptions that's our score and i would say after that field goal by ray wirshing maybe the pressure is on the saints once again well it is their young football team they've responded well to the pressure today but the thing that amazes me is their consistent effort and their special teams coming up with sutton thinking about this play the big special team score of the game right on the left of your screen 29 regis sutton coming inside and just gets a clear shot ron heller 89 the tight end made no effort at all to slow him down and gave him a clear angle to go in and make the the block the extra field goal and poe picked it up went all the way for the touchdown and there is reggie sutton who came into the game with five interceptions tied for the lead in the nfc worshiping will kick off dalton hilliard and mel gray are back for the saints heading over towards gray at the two muffs it and goes down shy of the 15. plenty of time remaining 10 minutes and 33 seconds but a bear will have a long way to go as they start this drive from the 13-yard line 23-17 the score at halftime the saints led 9-7 on the strength of three martin anderson field goal nothing that jim moore would like more now than to have his good solid running attack eat up that clock hey baron not having to make third down and 10 conversions but only maybe third and one or third and two reuben mays is the lone setback and a fake reverse maze brings it out to the 21-yard line and a gain of about eight on the play dwayne ford makes the stop maze as we said 144 yards last time these clubs played and today he has 58 yards and 17 carries so basically the 49ers have kept him down well they've kept him down but the saints haven't really made the effort today to try to just exclusively run the football they've done what they wanted to do and that is let a bear come out and put pressure on the 49ers throwing the football hoping it would open up the running attack instead of the running attack opening up the passing but they need the running now and let's see how a bear plays it on second and three they've got the blocker barry word in there at fullback ahead of maze maze fighting his way appears to have the first down at the 24-yard line and it was kevin fagan and pete coogler on the stop and jeff fuller is shaken up for the 49ers it is a first down for new orleans i think it would take a lot to knock this guy out of the game don't you well big strong kid they think of him as a linebacker playing secondary but you know you're gonna get hit you know little things a lot of times you'll see a major hit on on the football field and everybody will scream and holler and say oh my god how's he gonna get up but to the athlete it may not even hurt him then it's the little bitty things that puts a guy out for a month you gotta be there to know the truth well you've been talking about the saints running game and how they've opened it up and been more balanced that's their seasons average and that's what they've got today but more important they have a 23 to 17 lead over the 49ers with 9 18 remaining in the fourth quarter games like this will force you out of your normal offense and defense tom homo replaces jeff fuller at strong safety first and ten at the 24. may finds a hole and reuben mays leaps to another first down at the 35-yard line and tim mckeyer makes the stop and they're going to their meat and potatoes right now well it's not surprising anyone coming out with two tight ends turning around now and allowing maze to say come on and we need you line let's block and you can see there a good hole and maze of that slashing ability reads pressure outside cuts back inside and then does a little flip on his back for the first down he's got 72 yards so he's turning toward a hundred if they can keep the ball on the ground less than eight and a half remaining first and ten at the 35. shift by the line again getting avail out of his cadence again reuben mays dives forward for about three ideally dick when you see something like that go check with me and a bear said when he walks up to the line of scrimmage he has check with me on and two plays to call but when they shift like that when he sets his line and they shift he can't get out of it he has to stay with the play he's just learning i mean here's a guy that only in his third year and people looked at a bear as the starter on this ball club but he came over from the usfl he had some great receivers there duper at college and he had anthony carter in the usfl golden hillyard in there now second and seven and hilliard gets his opportunity and brings it out past the 40 to the 42-yard line short of a first down by three yards michael carter on the stop didn't work much this week did carter had a great game against the saints earlier at the superdome shaken up with an injury but now it's third and three winding down to seven minutes to go so i would say this may be an important third down for the saints hey there goes up top for martin and it'll be fourth down tom holmoe and tory nixon defending one thing i can say for a bear today although he hasn't completed that many passes his selection has been pretty dog going good that time he looked around the field picked up where he had the isolation on man for man found his guy just missed him don griffin goes back for the 49ers and brian hanson who has had a fine afternoon he'll take it away with 6 53 remaining in the fourth quarter and off the side of his foot not a good kick by hanson and it goes out of bounds bad break for the saints and the 49ers will take it capacity at candlestick park are looking for montana to bring home the niners and give them the lead we'll be back the upstart saints a team to be reckoned with but soon they'll reckon with the giants next sunday on cbs sports we're back at candlestick park the 49ers will have the ball and moments ago jeff fuller who came out of the game with an injury went into the dressing room joe montana meanwhile right there first and ten on the 37 of san francisco niners trail by six points montana gets out of trouble and gets seven eight yards on that play no receivers downfield and slid in at the 43-yard line ideally what you want a quarterback to do is not be able to throw to his receivers hey that's great but the thing the saints worry about is when montana brings it down the ability to scramble out of the pocket now all the pressure is on the safeties and the linebackers eight yards he picked up seven that time brought it out to the niners 44-yard line roger craig shy of the first down has stopped just short of it and we have under six minutes remaining now in the fourth quarter brett maxie made the tackle saints lead it 23-17 the big play here in the second half was a block field goal attempt by reggie sutton and johnny pose 47-yard scamper to give the saints the lead worship came back to make it 23-17 and it's third and one and it's rice on a reverse with kali blocking in a first down to the 48 of new orleans jakes and mills on the tackle unbelievable call most coaches in the national football league would not make this call on third from short yard and second in short yardage that just wouldn't make it's too many risk involved and if you're nailed behind the line of scrimmage for a five or six yard loss man you've really put yourself in trouble you can see kali 69 the guard leads away for rice rice had the option of going outside but he knew he had to get the first down and so he took it up inside for the first down he ran a reverse for 17 to start the game for the 49ers and now it's a first down at the saint 49 roger craig finds a hole and vaughn johnson got a hold of him and stopped him after a two-yard pickup there's the clock the saints have two timeouts left but the 49ers have all three of theirs well there's one nice feeling that you could have if you're a defensive player for the saints is that is the 49ers have to score sound like a field goal here where you just have to bend and no not break but don't give them the touchdown these guys have to score and they got to score against the number one defense in the league against the pass also second and seven montana throws it out of bounds joe montana has nowhere to go and through it out of bounds the intended receiver was rice he made an audible that time to 85 wilson wilson was covered man for man with his guy off joe saw it came out made the audible but wilson missed the audible and forced montana to pull it down and scramble back out to the right and throw it away he got good pressure from jim wilkes from the saints it is third and seven with 3 56 on the clock 49ers seven game winning streak on the line here third and seven cost to craig and craig has stopped the yard short of a first down at the 40 and will bring up a fourth down antonio gibson and pat swilling combine to make the tackle you know what the crowd wants him to do and bill walsh will call a timeout so the 49ers will take some time to discuss a very important decision here there are no surprises when you play for the 49ers every everyone is a potential target working to be the best they can be teammates sponsored by the u.s army randall cunningham and greg garrity are teaming up to key the eagles drive for the playoffs in the last two weeks they have snatched victory in the final seconds over division rivals first versus st louis and then an even more dramatic fashion against the redskins cunningham and garrity individually they're good as teammates they strive to be the best they can be two of college football's greatest rivalries are headed your way a year ago notre dame almost upset penn state but this fourth down pass failed in 1971 johnny rogers of nebraska exploding against oklahoma and the huskers would go on to beat the sooners and wind up in the orange bowl in one of the greatest games ever played now next saturday here on cbs at noon eastern time we'll have the rematch notre dame at penn state that will be followed by the battle for number one oklahoma at nebraska will start at noon eastern on cbs the lights on here at candlestick park and a big play coming up for the san francisco 49ers who have used their first timeout of the second half bill walsh's niners are trailing by six 23-17 field goal does them no good they need the touchdown it's fourth and one on the saint 40 yard line do they have another gadget up their sleeve they go to craig he's got the first down and more out of bounds chased by van jakes so the pressure on the saint defense is craig with good blocks from sapolo and rathman with three and a half minutes remaining and a first down on the new orleans 33-yard line saints scored first jerry rice caught the first of two big touchdown passes it was 9-7 at the halftime on anderson's field goals big play off special teams worship brought him within six and now montana will try to get him closer crane wrestled out of bounds inside the 30 by dave weimer and a gain of about four on the play well you try to fool him a couple of times come out on fourth down a simple little pitch back to craig gets a big first down open up with another run but i can promise you i can almost guarantee you this is going to be a pass 3 24 down second down there's the timeout story on the 29 in new orleans rice to the top wilson to the bottom play action montana and it's knocked away and it's dave weimer who knocked away the pass intended for john frank the tight end and weimer who has a big interception today makes another big defensive play here they'd shown this counter trait action with montana faking and pulling both guards to the left montana outside looking deep trying to get the ball of francis actually he's covered and then he finds frank tries to pop him the ball but weimer outstanding job of knocking the ball down third down and six rice to the left wilson to the right and it's great and craig is stopped at the 30-yard line and the new orleans defense clamps down and the crowd wondering why that was a run instead of a pass and we're winding to three minutes bruce clark with help from jim wilts on the big play and it's fourth down and seven and the 49ers call their second timeout of this second half well the surprise element walsh is known for surprising teams doing the unusual at an at a very normal time that time we're all expecting pass he says great we'll run the football gains nothing we're going to run down the scores for you these are games still in progress and now the finals it is fourth and seventh at the 30th saints five and three with the fourth best record in the nfc terry but they have a lot to prove with the only victories against winning teams the cleveland browns in the opening game of the year and the chicago bears during the replacement game so the saints are looking for a solid win against a solid winning club and this is their best chance they need a victory like the eagles got last week over the redskins because that proved they proved to themselves that if we can beat a real contender then we belong there and all of a sudden your confidence just soars so today they're saying if we can beat these 49ers by golly we're good enough and the confidence that you gain from that kind of victory you cannot measure i remember playing for the steelers i said if we could just beat oakland or kansas city who at that time you know were the big teams we could just beat one of those teams boy i'd really feel like we're on our way we beat both of them went on and won the super bowl that was just one of them well one of the super bowls beat him again the next year too just so it wasn't an accident jim mora's got to be a big anxious on that sideline fourth down and seven at the 30-yard line with exactly three minutes to go rice is on the right this time and an inside fake hand off and it's hole wide open and a touchdown ron hiller a fake outside handoff and ron heller wide open down the middle the score is tied and ray worship will try to give the niners the lead maybe the heir apparent to the tight end job ron hiller a free agent to the left of your screen here dick montana coming out little fake draw the draw they'd run earlier brings the linebackers up and when they step up they open up the middle lane and there's heller 89 all alone for the touchdown credit this with a fake to craig to hold the linebackers allowing heller behind them heller now on the outside goes down no one touches him because they see the fake to the fullback now all of a sudden antonio gibson 27 says oh no oh no touchdown hitler caught a touchdown pass the first time these teams played for 39 yards and the 49ers lead by a point plenty of time for the saints to get in position for a possible field goal attempt the first time they played at the superdome the niners won it 24-22 the score right now is 24-23 worship will be kicking off dalton hilliard and mel gray are back gray on the right one of the keys that made that touchdown available was they were so afraid to go man coverage on rice that they went zone which is the perfect call by the way end over end it'll go to mel gray at the two stop at the 22. so the heat is on the saints offense here ron heller made the tackle after putting the niners in front on joe montana's second touchdown pass of the game and the scoring drive a fourth down pass to heller hey bear on first down and wide open completing it as lonzelle hill and out of bounds is lonzell hill and a 21-yard pickup quiets the crowd with 237 remaining smart route by hill in the slot number 87 simply comes down gets inside of fuller now he passes fuller looks back slows down by slowing down he doesn't run out of the reception area and allows a bear to get into football he'll caught four the first time they played this is his first catch carl smith the offensive coordinator sending in the plays it is first and ten saints on their own 45 and everyone in the stadium knows that a field goal could win it for new orleans hey bear completes it to martin into 49er territory and eric martin is knocked out of bounds inside the 25 by ronnie lock a big gain of 31 yards and now the saints are in business again quarterbacks that can do it under pressure are the ones that'll be champions anyone can do it when there's no heat on you but you the cream really comes to the top when everything is in your face and you have to make it happen a bear scrambling out martin simple route underneath what excellent block that time by jones to free martin good heady running by martin getting out of bounds stopping the clock interestingly enough the saints they haven't scored yet but they're doing it in such a hurry the 49ers are going to have a chance if new orleans scores hilliard in the backfield first and 10 on the san francisco 24. blitz and a handoff to hilliard hilliard gets a couple before clyde glover and ronnie lot bring him to a hall but a bear with two big passes to lonzell hill and eric martin good for 52 yards after four of a bear's last five passes had missed the mark and getting ready waiting in the wings is morton anderson and a time out the two-minute warning is here the drama continues and we'll be back to candlestick after this dick stockton and terry bradshaw back at candlestick park in our story and what a story it is the 49ers lead by one point two minutes to go the timeout remaining now the question is terry if you're the saints do you keep the ball on the ground use up the clock for morton anderson to try the three not give the niners much chance but they only have one timeout left well with a young quarterback like a bear that may be the best thing with a veteran quarterback like montana they might go ahead and try to take the ball in second and nine at the 23. already in field goal range and hilly gets tripped up by kena turner it'll be third down and coming up next on cbs 60 minutes except on the west coast in mountain time zones where it will be seen at its usual time clock is running in a minute and a half remaining morton anderson has kicked three field goals today third down and eight stacking up against the run here comes the blitz and the pass is dropping eric martin drops a sure touchdown pass and it'll be fourth down and the pressure was on bobby a bear there and now they'll be morton anderson's moment with a minute and 11 seconds to go anderson has kicked three field goals today but in the last play of their first game at the superdome against the 49ers he missed a 52-yarder with seconds to go that could have won wanted a chance for redemption here this will be a 40-yard attempt is good it just made it over the crossbar it barely made it over the crossbar and the saints mob morton anderson who's kicked a 40-yard field goal to give new orleans a 26-24 lead well you got to be cautious and if i was jim moore i would have my team under control because the last thing you'd want to do is get so overconfident that you go out there and have a let up thinking you've got this game won don't forget joe montana is the number one rated quarterback in the national football league he has the ability to go down this field rapidly i'm not so sure that he didn't slip when he kicked that ball well in this stadium the dude does come up early now let's see he plants his right foot and it does slide you're right it's now let's see what jim moore thinks there's another draw inside the right post look at the little body english leaning leaning leaning yes look at that sigh of relief could it be can it be a victory for the saints would bring them within one game of the lead in the nfc west and a 6-3 record but it's not over yet with 106 to go the 49ers still have one timeout left and joe montana at the helm and anderson will be kicking off dell rogers is back harry sydney also is back a short kick and it's rogers after 17. bomb loses fumble and they'll uncover we'll wait for the men in the striped shirts both teams are pointing their way maybe an agonizing weight for many but there are a lot of people that they got to get through harry sydney 24's coming off the field he pointed our ball no big deal to him he's all the way off the field now 49ers held on to it with a minute and two seconds remaining gene atkins made the hit on del rodgers well this is a chance for morton anderson to really put the ball deep into the end zone that would help but that wind is coming right into his face held the ball up now you're going to see there's the fumble by rogers and now it's just a scramble and i'm not even going to attempt to try to tell you who recovered it he's probably still under there 102 to go question now do you play tight or do you play zone do you play soft do you play hard there's the ball right in the middle now it appears that a 49er has it but now 39 brett next he's the guy looks like we would recover the fumble whatever it is it's 49er ball first and 10 at the 25 with one timeout left three points would give him the win pass to craig he'll go out of bounds and stop the clock with 56 seconds to go tonight on cbs starts with 60 minutes he may go down in the history books as the typhoid mary of aids watch 60 minutes tonight on cbs and following 60 minutes it's murder she wrote starring angela lansbury followed by the cbs sunday movie mayflower madam candice bergen stars in the true story of sydney biddle barrows that's all tonight on cbs second down and three at the 32. montana swings it out to craig he's got the first down out of bounds at the 39 with 51 seconds left six seconds to run that play now the thing that's going to happen here dick is that the saints continue to drop off at six seconds of play what montana is simply going to do is turn around give the ball to craig let him get six and seven yards of pop and before you know it they'll be down around the 20 to 25 yard line still one time out left for the niners seven defensive backs for the saints swing it out to craig he gets by two tacklers and is stopped at the 45 and now the 49ers want to use their last timeout jackson and jake's on the tackle san francisco is out of timeouts and will be back to candlestick after this ray washing warming up on the sidelines just as morton anderson had done earlier and anderson with a chance with a minute and six seconds left kick the 40-yard field goal to give the saints the 26-24 lead now it's montana second and four on their own 45 finds taylor taylor gets into saint territory milton mack on the tackle and a first down to the 40. and the niners have to hurry up two plays called montana just waving his hands two plays fall in the huddle montana goes to clark incomplete and that'll give him a chance to catch their breath and get straightened out with 23 seconds on the clock 49ers are out of timeouts they need to get the ball in field goal position for ray washington to try to win the game washings longest field goal this year has been 43 yards so they need to go seven more yards to set up worship no they need more than that 17 yards second down and 10. montana and craig can't hold on so it's third and ten reggie sutton covering on the play montana trying to get the ball out in the flat allowing us back to get five or six yards and then kill the clock if he gets a man inside and they tackle him this game is over with because they can't get up they can't get up line of play without doing it now it's third down they can't kill the clock on the next play the game's over he's been through this before though hey this guy is not worried about this one bit three wide receivers to the right one to the left 18 seconds to go third and ten montana can't find anyone and he stopped at the 31 he has no timeouts left seven seconds they may not get the play off and they won't the game is over what frustration for montana but look at the new orleans saints the saints have beaten the 49ers and ended their seven-game winning streak and moved to within a game of the nfc west lead and deservedly happy jim mora and the new orleans saints as they have come back and won on a field goal with 106 left to win it 26-24 the other thing we said was happened montana actually got getting up with fourth down having to throw the ball out of bounds to stop the clock on fourth down nothing left so you know with his players there he should have thrown the ball out of bounds fourth field goal of the game for morton anderson wins it for terry bradshaw dick stockton saying so long the saints beat the niners and right now let's go to brent musburger in new york all right dick thank you very much and so the new orleans saints coming alive as a franchise and now with a chance to wind up with a wild card or even better and of course you remember coach jim mora after that tough loss down in new orleans no more maybes he said i want a real victory now we're going to send you out for the conclusion of the seattle green bay game we'll join hank strand and tim brandt the seahawks in command for the final two minutes welcome those of you who have been watching san francisco's win over new orleans or new orleans win over san francisco rather 26-24 the final there tim brandon hank strand kingdom in seattle we've got 154 remaining seattle leads green bay 24 to
