good morning everyone welcome to new life good to have you with us here in church this is the first time i've been to a proper service for over a year so i'm excited to be here and if you're joining us online we just want to welcome you very special welcome to you um wherever you may be either at home in a different country you're very welcome it's great to have you with us for those who don't know my name's steve and i come here with my family to the church here at new life in croydon and if you're here for the first time or if you're watching online for the first time we'd love to um for you to get in touch with us tell us you've watched the the service or if you've got any questions about what you see or hear then you can go to the website newlife website and if you click on there there's a tab on there i'm new if you click on that then you'll get some information there and you can click on the appropriate button and uh someone from church will be able to get into contact with you and help you further so this morning we've got a really special service the baptismal pool is ready we're going to see some people baptized this morning and les is going to share a little bit later on when he comes share the word about what baptism means and and how that works um but we're believing for god to give us a good time this morning amen we're excited to be in god's house we're excited to worship and even if you're home you can worship god you don't have to be here you can worship god where you wherever you are so be engaged this morning and uh we'll have a great time together so just a couple of announcements before we hand over to the worship team um everything you need to know is in the new life bible as in lifelines so hopefully you've received lifelines all information is is in is in there um everything about the services the midweek activities the prayer meetings it's in lifelines information on the website and through the social media channels as well we'd just like to also say thank you to all of those of you that give to new life and have been giving faithfully over even this difficult period online is still the best way to give so be encouraged to continue to do that and thank you for for that and just to say after them after the service today there is an online zoom meeting um at 11 15. the link to that is in lifelines so avoid this after that and connect with other people from the church that's 11 15 on zoom after service and if you'd like some prayer with an elder today you can jump onto zoom as well links in lifelines 11 30 so the elders will be there to pray for you with you at 11 30 and again the link is in lifelines so before we move on in the hand loves the worship team let's just commit our morning to god in prayer because i believe that god is going to do something special this morning as those come and be baptized and allez comes and shares god's word and as we worship god the king of kings the lord and lord god just invite you to stand as we pray and then we'll hand over to the to the worship team i said i'm excited to be back in church it's been over a year and what a year or so it's been and we know people that have lost people and maybe you're watching and you've lost people um somebody handed me a prayer card before um one of their their family terence who's 19 who's a basketball player going to top leagues in in la was killed in the car crash on thursday so we're just going to pray for her family and we're going to pray for each other and we're going to pray that god moves through our service so let's just pray together father we want to thank you that you are the king of kings we want to thank you that you are the lord of lords and this morning we come to worship you we come to surrender ourselves to you this morning and we pray that father as we meet here and as we meet in our homes and as you meet those that are viewing around the world we pray that you would have to have a sense of your presence the lord you enable us to worship you and the lord you would speak to us through your your word and lord we want to thank you you're the god who knows everything about us you're the god who cares so lord we just lift up this tell us his family to you and we pray that father you would meet with them and be with them at this time of grief that father you are the god of all comfort and we pray that you would put your comforting arms around them as a family and lord we pray for all of those that have lost somebody this last year or in in these last few days that father you would bring your comfort to their life lord we just want to come this morning and proclaim you king of kings and lord of lords we worship you we praise you we thank you that we're able to meet and lord we pray for our nation we pray for our governments that father we pray that father you had come afresh to this land that father you would pour out your spirit upon this nation the father people will turn their hearts and their lives to you father be glorified this morning in jesus mighty name we pray amen wonderful let's set our attention on jesus this morning worship isn't just singing worship is our attention on jesus so let us set our attention on him this morning and allow him to come and do whatever he wants to do in our lives he wants to impact us this morning he wants to touch our lives he wants to change every person who has been baptized forever he wants to put his presence and his holy spirit in them let us be expectant of his presence this morning in christ alone [Music] jesus in fullness of god in helpless babe this gift of love and righteousness scorned by the ones he came to save till on that cross as jesus died that wrath of god was satisfied for every sin on him was laid here in the death of christ i [Music] lived [Music] them bursting forth in glorious day up from the grave he rose again and as he stands since curse has lost its grip on me for i am he is and he is mine [Music] and as he stands in victory [Music] since [Music] and he is [Music] no fear in death this is the power of christ in me from life's first cry to final breath jesus commands my destiny no a look in your eye commanding me daughter stand not afraid to touch me taking my hand who is this man this is too much to understand commanding me to leave this old land go sin no more and your sins stone but their stares alone could blast her race upon grace at laster new way he came to make known the father so let us run back to him faster not hiding the infection with a plaster trying to clean or punish ourselves working up a dirty lava guilt and works adopting an attitude of try harder stop striving stop hiding come to your abba father your sins are forgiven present future and past are paid for all knelt to the tree it's double jeopardy he was punished you go free his truth growing sharper joy bubbling up into laughter when you've seen him the sand roarer you've seen the father hello hello everyone that was great i hope you enjoyed that uh that's selling isn't it we're going to have four baptisms um one lady and three gentlemen and that's really nice because normally we get more ladies baptized than less gentlemen so i'm really excited this morning they're all going to be saying goodbye to their past life and hello and welcome to the new life and that's been made possible by some of the stuff we had there jesus died on the cross for all of us and so that our sins can be forgiven so that we can leave our old life and get a new life and his resurrection says yes to everything so he said it's finished then and then when he resurrected his new life and so these people are going to go down in the water and they're going to be submerged and then they will come back with a new life that's the idea that we more said about it later on um so we're starting with the lady first faith is going to come and get baptized faith has a very interesting testimony and so faith is going to read that testimony to us and then she's going to go into the water yeah come on okay good morning hello can you hear me hi good morning so my name is faith i grew up in church and always considered myself a christian throughout my life i sought god and longed for a relationship with him but would seek him back and forth over the years choosing when i would be in church i knew jesus as my lord and saviour but not deep enough and only at a comfortable distance before moving into croydon i knew i needed to find a church and get back into a relationship with god i would pass new life on route to home and was deciding between this church and another i had visited god put a scripture in my heart ephesians 4 16 one morning and as i sat down in the service a new life i knew i saw the same scripture on the wall and that is when i knew that god was steering me here that was in late 2019 when i recommitted myself to the lord and was saved i have had some personal loss over the last year and god has been a great comfort to me during this time i'm getting baptized today to show my commitment to god that i'm serious and i want to make a public decoration that i want to leave my old life behind and have a new life in christ i want to be an obedient child of god and carry out his will [Applause] amen you well i'm faith i've got a before i pray for you uh so faith was in the foundations course that we were running and so i've got to know faith a little bit recently so i'm proper proud let's uh before i pray i'm just going to read from colossians 3 verses 12 to 14. this is a burst for you today therefore as god's chosen people holy and dearly loved clothe yourselves with compassion kindness humility gentleness and patience bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another forgive as the lord forgave you and over all these virtues put on love which binds them all together in perfect unity if you'd like to kneel lord we thank you for faith we thank you for what you've been doing in her life that you have called her to be your daughter to be your disciple lord i ask that you would lead her by your holy spirit help her to have patience to forgive others help her to have compassion help her to love faith on the confession of your faith in the lord jesus christ we baptize you now in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit congratulations faith we've got your certificate and a little present for you later on yeah next up is peter and shade is going to do the praying and the baptizing by the way dave is part of the pastoral team and so is shady okay hello morning everyone yeah um yeah my name is peter um i've been coming church for a while now um and i want to devote my life to christ um i've turned the corner in my life where before i was in trouble with the law all the time and god has pulled me away from that path and he's brought me to a new life and i just want to show my commitment and my dedication now to christ and let god take control thank you so peter this scripture is for you um and it's from sorry peter this scripture is for you and it's taken from john 15 16 and the lord will say to you you did not choose me but i chose you and ordained you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should remain and whatsoever you ask the father in my name he may give you peter you've come through a troubled past but god wipes that away clean and he's good he's um there for you he's not going to leave you nor forsake you and um i'm just going to pray for you now before you go into the water and come out father lord i just want to thank you for peter's obedience to you i thank you as he submitted and bowed the knee to you and asked you to be lord of his life that lord you will fill him and the unction of your holy spirit will be upon him you will anoint him that his walk will be with you i just asked heavenly father that you give him the spirit of wisdom of knowledge the spirit of counsel and of mind might and of the spirit of the affair of the lord so peter in the name of jesus i baptize you in the name of the father the son and the holy [Applause] do you have ghost troubles next up is richard richard can you yeah wonderful hi welcome richard [Applause] and i am doing the honest richard if you'd like to come here and just tell us why you want to i've always believed in god but i came away from my faith and if it was by a divine intervention five years ago something drew me back to the church we just called in i received the holy spirit at new life a lot has happened since then i've moved away from korean living in cruelty now after pending birth of my daughter in july with my partner alba i want to make my relationship with god complete by getting baptized and doing what god requires me to do in difficult times my faith is still strong and i want to show jesus amen okay step in if you come to us here and then you can kneel down right peter i'm just going to um pray for you and there's a word i have for you which is written written in the little booklet that we're giving you so let's pray sorry i said i reached richard i'm going to pray for you father i just want to thank you for i want to thank you for his life i thank you for turning his life around and father i thank you for this decision that he's made he made it on his own without pressure from anybody and lord is such a delight to to see him here just wanting to commit himself fully to you to continue his journey with you and to be effective as a christian in his workplace in his neighborhood and in life in general father i just pray that you will bless him i pray that as you promise to keep us as he promised to be with us all the time that he will know your presence with him always and i pray father that he will be the kind of person who looks constantly to you your word says that you will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you and father i pray that that will be true of richard that his mind will continually be stayed on you and that you will keep him in perfect peace richard upon confessing his compassion of your faith in jesus christ and your decision and your desire to live for him for him to continue to be your lord and savior for the rest of your life i now baptize you in the name of the father the son and the holy first and then you can go in there yeah you want to say what now i just had a really rough life i decided to look for god everywhere i looked it always said the messiah i found out the reason why he was called the messiah and what he is so i confess that he's my lord and saber that's it richard actually has um an interesting testimony his his dad is muslim and his mom is catholic so he said he was brought up in both but he sought the lord for himself and made a decision and i was very encouraged with his testimony when i heard it he said i'm going to pray for you sorry i keep i'm going to pray for you yeah you can kneel now sorry i'll pray for your mouth and i was always encouraged by your testimony jamel and it's a pleasure to pray for you at this time and also to baptize you father i thank you for jamal i thank you that you revealed yourself to him i thank you that you he realized the promise that you've made that when we seek you with all our heart we will find you and indeed he sought you everywhere he read about all kinds of religions and then he came to the decision that jesus is the messiah and as a result of that he committed his life to you and he wants to demonstrate that today by being baptized and following you so father i just pray you will bless him i pray you will strengthen him i pray you will encourage him i pray you will surround him with people who will help him along his journey i pray he will be an effective witness for you and i pray that your holy spirit will continue to strengthen him i just pray that he will choose to be with people who love you so that he will remain strong in you i ask these things in the name of jesus jamal on confession of your faith in the lord jesus i now baptize you in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit amen thank you god bless you i have a scripture in the booklet for you okay okay right that's it i think um we're going to have our sermon now and les is going to come and speak morning everybody lovely to see you this morning with a big smile on your faces yeah wasn't it wonderful to see the baptisms this morning here start of a new life the start of a new life for each of those individuals you know this water has not got any magical power it's not got any special dust put into it it doesn't have the power to save you because when you go into it you've already made a confession of your photo jesus and asked him to come into your life all this water symbolizes is a public confession to every single one of you that every one of these people have chosen to go through the wall of baptism and as they go down they die with christ and they are raised again into a new life and what they have said to you is i am going to follow jesus i am going to follow jesus and that is probably the most important decision they will ever make in their lives to follow jesus it's funny you know if you always notice that people are always trying to get your attention attention attention attention a mate of mine phoned me up the other day and he said to me uh hello les mate i said hello bry he's a he's a friend from my local marathon running club we go running marathons together yeah yeah yeah that was my son yeah no he does go to a marathon running club but uh not me and he said to me you know he said i was out on one of my rounds the other day he said he said you'll never guess what happened to me he said i was running along a new route he said running away he said i was just working up a sweat he said oh it was great he said then suddenly i heard this sound berlin 13 13 13. he thought where's that coming from women so he ran down the street and he tried to find out where the sound was coming from and he ran up an eel and the sound was getting louder and louder and leather 13 13 13. he come down to this gray building and it seemed to be coming from behind the walls and as he got near to the building all he could hear was rumbling 13 13 13. so he tried to find a ladder to look over the wall when he couldn't it was too high he tried to see if there was anywhere under there or any gates and there was no entrance and all he could hear was 13 13 13 and he started to grip him what's down about 13 what did it mean 13 and suddenly he looked and he saw a tiny little hole in the wall and he thought i know i'll do i'll go and have a look so he goes up close to the wall and he's there like this and he puts his eye right near the hole and ah somebody pokes their finger in his eye and then he is 14 14 14 be careful who's trying to get your attention if you have a bible please turn to revelation 3 with me behold i stand at the door and knock if anyone hears my voice and opens the door i will come in and eat with him and he with me that's revelation chapter 3 verse 20. behold i stand at the door and knock if anyone hears my voice and opens the door i will come in to him and eat with him and he with me you know the bible uses the word behold on average 1527 times behold behold behold well if the bible uses it 1527 times it must be quite an important word don't you think what do you think it means to look to see to gaze upon it means please pay attention over here over here that's what he's trying to say this morning jesus is trying to grab your attention he's trying to get your attention he wants to speak to you but i want to ask you this morning first what is grabbing your attention at the moment is it the news is it the latest coveted figures is it about how good it's getting or about how bad it's getting is it political are you at the moment concentrating on sleaze is that what your attention's on is your attention on russia and america and the problems there well maybe your attention's on your finances yeah or lack of them in location where are they [Music] is it how well you're doing on the stock market or how not is that the first thing you go to in the morning your financial times or is it your bible is it your health is it your love life oh gotta find a partner maybe it's the latest handbag of matching shoes maybe that's the thing that's really got your attention at the moment and you can't seem to shake it you can't seem to let it go maybe it's your sunday roast oh i can already wait till he shuts up and i don't get that sunday roast that roast chicken or beef down down my neck this morning but this morning for a few minutes jesus wants your attention behold behold behold i stand at the door and knock jesus jesus god the creator of everything that you see the creator of every breath that you take of everywhere you travel of everything you do of everything you are everything that's in existence wants to speak to you this morning he wants to speak to you he wants to speak to you sounds important to me i was watching to tell you the other day that that black rod fell over you know him from the houses of parliament uh he he goes and opens the the houses of commons for the queen's speech and there he is he's walking along and all these robes and there all the lords and ladies in their robes and he's walking along like this and he's got a stick a bit like mine and they've got a black rod he's coming black rod he's coming what's happening here and so as he gets to the door in the comments they slam it in his face and he goes knock knock knock and they open the door back again he goes in there he invites them all and then they all follow him and again it's black rod is coming black rob black rod that sounds really important didn't it not as important as the message that jesus has got for you it's far more important it's far more a sense of urgency with this message it's an urgent message it's a merge it's a message that needs our attention now first group of people i'm talking to today are christians because this scripture wasn't originally a gospel scripture it was a call to fellowship jesus was talking to the church at laodicea he was talking to christians he was speaking to them now laid this here is located in modern-day turkey it's one of seven churches that jesus wrote to in the book of revelation um and it's it's it's a church that's described as very prosperous it sits at an area of strategic central central banking or it did at the time of of those days it was a very very well-to-do area it was well known for its famous black wall and it's i found itself that it produced eye openment that was was you know it had a great reputation for healing eyes it was an area that was so wealthy that when an earthquake struck in ad 60 they didn't want any help from the roverman government they refused the latest in council refused financial help and rebuilt at their own expense completing the work themselves so the lady seeing church was a prosperous church it was a wealthy church it was a self-sufficient church it was a church they felt needed nothing more because it had all unfortunately lake syria didn't have its own water supply well not very much of one and so what they used to have to do is they would have to aqueduct the water in from hierapolis from the hot springs or they would have to bring cool water from colossae up from the aqueduct the only problem was by the time that the water came to lay this here it'd become lukewarm very often that water was unpalatable it wasn't pleasant it wasn't hot which is very useful if you want a nice hot shower in the morning and it wasn't cold if you want to cool your brow it was lukewarm it was unsuitable for purpose it was only fit for spitting out and jesus calls the lady seeing church he calls them lukewarm lukewarm in verse 16 of the chapter and he says he's about to get this the actual word is vomit vomit them out of his mouth not spit but vomit that's the kind of distaste why why chapter goes on to tell us that they thought they were rich but they were poor in the things of god they thought they were self-sufficient but where was god in the picture they thought they were prosperous but god saw them as naked bear they thought they had great spiritual insight but they were blind and they weren't seeing what they needed to see they were self-reliant self-sufficient self-deceived and lacking lacking they had no discernment they had lost their spiritual temperature they lost their sense of that close relationship that reliance on jesus in verse 19 jesus calls them to be zealous and repent be zealand be further repent repent to turn around to change their ways this was a call back to fellowship with him i call back to have relationship with him a call back to be reliant with him to love him for him to be come back again the apple of their eye as as they were his jesus wanted to eat with them he said if you open the door i'll come in and eat it with you and that's a typical middle eastern picture of fellowship friendship closeness being together being one hospitality love giving food they're out in those countries and water that's the lifeblood the life source of everything you need that was jesus what jesus was saying turn around become reliant on me return return return that was a message to the lady at syrian church at the time and it's a warning it's a warning to us as christians today it's a warning not to become too self-reliant too self-sufficient not to think that we have it all we have nothing without him we have nothing without jesus absolutely nothing i pray to god that not many of us are in that position today but there are also many other reasons where you can lose your spiritual temperature you can lose your spiritual temperature in many ways you can lose that closeness to jesus you can slide backwards or backslide if that's what you want to call it i remember running up bonkey once saying slide back to jesus slide back to jesus self-reliance is one thing that will do it a lack of a sense of urgency in the in the things of god will do it you know that manana spirit will do it tomorrow we'll do it tomorrow what he's pointing off jesus sets himself he's set into your peripheral vision you can't see him he's not there he's not at the center he's not your focal point disappointment we'll do it you know sometimes church we have to rise above our disappointments our disappointments can crush us if we allow them to if we take our eyes off of jesus and we see the disappointments the things that we would like to have been or said or or who would we would like to have been and we get disappointed we don't see jesus anymore and our fellowship is hurt destroyed frustration frustration's another way frustration with the church frustration with the church leadership frustration with christians fellow christians your family your brothers and sisters you can get so frustrated about things you can't see the wood for the trees anymore and you lose a grip on reality jesus knocks knock knock knock knock knock knock you can become over confident you can become hurt you could be so gripped with guilt that it separates you it brings down your spiritual temperature fear this period of covid has been terrible but we cannot allow it to dictate who we are as a church we cannot allow it to dictate who we are as a group of believers we need to love one another still we need to care for one and another still we need to join in that fellowship with one another still okay within the guidelines but we need to be there one with another loving one another reconnecting with jesus knock knock knock if you feel like it this morning reconnect if that's how you're feeling if you feel jesus knocking at the door of your heart this morning reconnect with him i used to live in wales for a very long time and we used to have a an open coal fire to cost a lot of coal putting in there keep it going but i tell you what it was the hottest heat that i've ever felt in my life you put that hot fire on that co after a cold day and you were in flames and it was beautiful it was glowing absolutely glowing all those troll individual coals blowing away but you had to be very careful with it and we used to have to have a half and we used to have a rug that went across that front of that carpet because as soon as one of those red hot flaming coals would fall out if it went on your carpet that was a new carpet the wife was no i need a new carpet lovely and you know your wallet would suffer that that rig cut you have to get that with a pair of tongs you'd have to put it on the half and wait for it to cool down but it didn't take very long and that coal would cool down it didn't take very long and you could pick that thing up with your hand and it was dull and it wasn't beautiful and red anymore but it was action and old and falling apart and useless sometimes we need to reconnect with jesus sometimes we need to reconnect with our brothers and sisters we're hotter together we keep the warmth of christ together we are like a fire built together generating and pulsating the glow of jesus into this world knock knock knock if that's you and only you will know that in your heart you might be saying this doesn't apply to me this morning this but if that's you then god is calling you back today he's calling you back to fellowship with him he wants the sup of you wants to eat with you once that that intimacy back it's never too late never too late as my friend reinhardt would say slide back slide back he loves you he loves you so much i suppose the second group of people i'm talking today to today are those people maybe here and maybe out there on the internet that have never given their lives to jesus i've never known the transforming love of jesus in their lives they've never experienced that wonderful relationship with him and i believe god is knocking knock knock knock on the door of your heart today he's speaking to you because god is always reaching out and today it's a call to salvation for you you might say to me why is god trying to reach me well it's not because he's desperate and it's not because he needs you he doesn't need your money it's not because he's lonely it's not because he's angry it's not because he wants to beat you with a big stick he stands there the creator of everything that you see in existence knocking at the door of your heart because he loves you he loves you with an everlasting love a love that you can't even imagine he loves you there's an urgency here the bible says that today is the day of salvation on now is the day of salvation god is calling out to you today not tomorrow or next week now is the day of salvation you know the bible teaches us that we've all been separated from god by what the bible calls sin sin simply all the rubbish that grow that is in our lives all the selfishness or the hatred or the not loving god or the bad things we've done or the people we've hurt all that sin or that junk that accumulates in our lives and fastest and that separates us from a holy and perfect god it becomes a barrier sin is all the rubbish in your life but the good news the good good good news is found in john 3 16 for god so loved the world that he gave his only one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life the love of jesus reconciles the love of jesus sets you free the power of jesus love changes lives and god wants to change your life today he wants to touch your life today he wants to move in your life today he's knocking knock knock knock on the door of your heart so you say okay god's knocking i can feel him i can feel him this morning this i can feel a movement and god is speaking to me what what does he want me to do what does he want me to do les simple he just wants you to believe turn around and receive believe turn around and receive what do i have to believe liz the good news believe the good news the jesus is the way the truth and the life that he's the way back to god that he's the bridge back for you he's offering you salvation today he's offering you a way to be reconciled with god he's offering you a fresh start a new life just like he offered each one of those people today he wants to do the same for you he wants to offer you a new life he wants to show you his love you see jesus died on the cross most of us know that but jesus died on the cross for you and me for you and me for me and all the rubbish that i did before i came to jesus all the stinking mess that i made of my life and i made a mess of my life absolutely but jesus was now on the cross to pay for the penalty of my sin do you know what goes through my mind sometimes when jesus was on the cross the faults that were going through his head did he see every single time my selfish murderous horrible self made a wrong decision did something to hurt someone did someone have something to break someone's heart did he see all those horrible things that i got up to and everybody else did he see theirs was jesus thinking about the whole sin of the world individually i don't know i'm not a theologian so i couldn't answer but it just i wonder i wonder but jesus died for me and you on that cross to pay the penalty for everything wrong that you have ever done in your life everything that you've ever been ashamed of in your life jesus paid the price for because he loves you he loves you not only did he bleed and go all through that on the cross and die for you but he rose again on the third day he rose from his tomb and he conquered death and he conquered sin he was victorious he was victorious and he did it for you offering you new life eternal life if you want it so you say to me les you've told me this about jesus dying on the cross and you've told me about the resurrection but what about well what about what about what about those words are unimportant those faults those doubts are unimportant you've got to know it and you know there's got to be a calling now in your heart that jesus is speaking to you at this moment and he says do you come i offer you new life i offer you salvation don't worry about all the answers i'm here knock knock knock and then he asks you to just simply turn around the bible calls it repentance it just means for your whole life you have been doing things your way you've been living in your own direction following your own feet and god is tapping you on the shoulder today he's saying oh it liz turn around give your life to me tell me you're sorry for all the things you've done that are wrong repent change direction follow me follow me follow me follow me in your life give your life to me now all you simply need to do is if you've believed and you've turned around you've repented it's receive just receive what god has got for you today open the door of your heart say jesus jesus come in i want a relationship with you i want to feel your love i want to feel your strength set me free set me free set me free not knock knock he offers you forgiveness of all your sins he wants to change your life he wants to set you free he wants to heal you and heal your heart he wants to show you the power of love and forgiveness love and forgiveness he wants a relationship with you and you and you and you every one of you god wants a relationship with you today knock knock knock if that's the sound you can hear in your heart now i'm going to pray a simple prayer if you want jesus to come into your life just pray alongside me can we have every head bowel pleasing every eye closed jesus i thank you for dying on that cross for me i thank you that you want to come in and change my life and i asked you to come in and forgive me of my sin to set me free jesus i lay my life in front of you now and i say be my lord and savior in jesus name amen now if
