what we meet the people buying abroad who wish they never set eyes on their new homes from hell beneath the Sinai Mountains in Egypt lies Sharm al-sheikh a holiday location on the Red Sea with a near-perfect climate it's warm and dry all year round and they're some of the best scuba diving in the world in 2005 Allison and LAN will sir decided to leave their home in York and retire here our first impressions of Egypt were it's a beautiful country the climate is better than Britain and it's so much cheaper to live out here there are posters advertising the financial benefits of Sharm al-sheikh and every year around 600 people moved from the UK to live in Egypt we wanted to say goodbye to the climate to income texts to council text to v80 to robe texts to television licensees because we have none of that here petrol prices yeah giorgia team is an estate agent he specializes in selling properties to Europeans they settled between twinky Lane apartment per month for English bills yes Wow he sold Alison and Len an off plan property at Sean Cliff residence the promotional drawing showed 13 blocks with six apartments in each surrounded by lush gardens he promised a on-site restaurant maid service maintenance he was supposed to have landscaped gardens you know it looked really impressive they bought a tube a Department for 37,000 pounds builders were already on site and work appeared to be on schedule we were told three months to one year is all finished and after three years that has not materialized instead of looking like a nice compound it looked more like a bomb site Allisyn and Len have a contract that says the development includes eleven hundred square meters of gardens and that residents have use of poolside sunbeds I'm standing in the swimming pool and according to the contract this has to be cleaned every day but he's never seen water in it yet because it's not finished and this is what's supposed to be our a restaurant and supermarket 23 of the 78 apartments are now occupied and the residents have been battling to get mr. Sammy who built the development and his wife Lamia who helps to manage it to sort out the communal facilities initially the Builder was very very nice to everybody but it very soon soured when we were pointing out that we didn't have what was in the contracts I had stand-up arguments with them and I was told by mr. Sami no woman speaks to me like that I said well no man speaks to me like you do driving past the site on his way to work giorgia team was puzzled by the delays it was only a matter of finishing this is not take a not take a months you can finish a building here complete building one month's four on six apartment or eight apartment and the work that has been completed is substandard including basic utilities the water supply is from a little tank it's not big enough even to supply the apartment the during use these cables are only six millimeters and in one year we had more than five fires with everybody coming home putting the air-conditioning on and the wires burning out because there on the surface exposed to sunlight the outer casings go brittle and it exposes the wires inside so even children here can't play outside because it's so dangerous there's an annual maintenance fee of 400 pounds for services such as security guards looking after the grounds and collecting rubbish but a year after moving in residents had to take drastic action we stopped paying the maintenance because there isn't any maintenance nothing exists there is no pool there's no grass a little bit of dress that they gave us he's now brown because he's not being watered and all the bushes and the palm trees are dying water and electricity bills were paid directly to mrs. Lamia but after the residents had a dispute with her over unfinished work the utility company cut off the supply and when they got together and negotiated to pay the utility companies directly they discovered why when we contact the companies she had not been paying them the money that we had given her so we had to pay for it twice just to get the supplies back so instead of living the beautiful dream they'd been promised they got this and by August 2007 they'd had enough it just got to the stage where I said I can't live here anymore it's driving me mad they decided to find a tenant and move out they rented the apartment to a friend Colleen Anthony at a reduced rate he noticed the communal stairs seemed dangerously open-plan I'd like to see a handrail fitted as part of the original design I'd like to see a handrail at the top of the stairs they are in my mind responsibilities of the Builder and the builders our mission resulted in a serious accident whilst carrying in some groceries one evening I managed to get up to the second flight of stairs which is where I am now and tripped and actually fell from I would say from about here down to the bottom there ended up with eight stitches in my head dislocated my shoulder five cracked ribs and I currently still have to go back into hospital to have some work done on my shoulder area which is just up here which is the clavicle bone which is out of place and will need to be pinned and for back in in March 2008 the developer mr. Sami disappeared and it seems that his wife Lamia has been left in charge of the development we tried to contact them but they haven't responded we just want the compound finishing I mean there are people who want to buy the compound but they won't sell Alison and Len have now got together with another for residents and hired a lawyer they want their money back plus damages for breach of contract but the core case is progressing very slowly and no one has located mr. Sami yet
