The naming of the ship had me rolling, so good. I really enjoy what Kate brings, she seems pretty relaxed and fits well with the guys. The guys have previously mentioned working really hard to find people that fit with them and gel as players

EDIT: just gonna say (in case he is lurking): Joe seemed very anxious about GMing a brand new system live on air, which is a very valid concern. I would have been terrified. However, I think he did a great job, it flowed really well and he set a good atmosphere

Troy was in fine form in this one.

Joe: โ€œA medic has joined your crew. His name is Liam Flynn.โ€ Troy: (pause) โ€œI got a feeling Iโ€™m going to butt heads with Flynn.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

Best laugh for me, on the subject of special items (or whatever theyโ€™re called):

Troy: โ€Mine is my business card.โ€

[brief silence]

Kate: โ€œAre you kidding me?!โ€

Skid's character name had me laughing so hard I had to hit pause to collect myself! I've been an Aliens franchise fan for as long as I can remember, and I simply can't wait to hear more. The entire crew is really meshing well, too.

I would be so happy to have Alien make it into the regular season rotation!

The mission they chose really reminds me of the movie "Event Horizon". Until the aliens show up at least.

If you haven't watched this movie, do yourself a favour and check it out. It's about finding a ship that it's crew mysteriously vanished, Sam Elliot of Jurassic park fame is in it.

Very much a horror if that stops you.

Also, I love how nerdy Skid, Joe, and Grant are for these movies. I am right there with them.

So excited for them to keep playing. This game seems great. This group seems great. Kate being back is great. CPR was my favorite group of the NGWD so far. Bring back Francis, and this is will be the best show on the network.

I'm really pumped they will eventually play One Ring 2E. I also backed that project. Skid will make that game so fun. I can't wait!

Which adventure are they playing? I was thinking Chariots of the Gods, but that doesn't seem to be it

I wonder if theyโ€™ve considered doing character creation off camera? Personally I donโ€™t find it very interesting, and I think as players they might appreciate having some time to think things through.

[Music] good evening everyone and welcome to new game who dis the game where we crack open a 400 page rule book of a tabletop role-playing game for the first time and try to play it right raw without any preparation whatsoever uh it's a very dangerous undertaking but that's how bold we are and uh and i'm excited i'm excited for tonight and terrified all at the same time i'm here tonight with a fantastic group of players and i am so lucky to carry me through this horrific experience that uh oh yeah skid's already dropping the gifts uh that i mean i just i just don't know where to begin when it comes to the alien rpg it is uh something that i am so thrilled and excited to get into but also incredibly incredibly nervous uh because it is such a yeah i mean you guys wow we didn't give kate anything i have yeah that are a steven universe themed like i'm so ready to play today uh well let's uh let's start off welcoming our special guest uh for tonight's stream after a couple more episodes uh of this game should her character survive uh please welcome back to new game who dis miss kate thomas kate hello hello thank you for having me it is it is our distinct pleasure we had a great time playing cyberpunk with kate a few couple months ago and now uh as the as the alien rpg uh cropped up and obviously there were similar themes we know kate to be a big sci-fi fan it was like can we get kate on board and she jumped in and i gotta say just lifting the curtain a little bit that we um we had another plan for this new game who dis and it fell through due to some licensing issues uh all good things but it just got delayed the other project that we wanted to do and so we kind of had to scramble and come up with something pretty quick and so everybody tonight is working on relatively short prep for this game but it's something that we all obviously have a well not all of us so i'll get into that in a second but most of us have a shared understanding of of the setting uh and so it was like look if we know all of that everything else can kind of fall into place um troy you are a guy that does not enjoy a whole lot of movies particularly popular blockbuster action films i think it's pretty safe to say it's not that i don't enjoy him i just there's they just can't watch them he won't watch them because he assumes he won't enjoy them i wasn't alive my parents my mom in particular was very strict about what i could watch as a child so like while you were uh you know sneaking around watching r-rated movies i just was i was a good boy i was like no i'm not gonna do that so when i got older and i started to go back to watch movies you know i i watched alien i watched aliens uh but i watch it like a hundred times like you would have like when it was when you know when you were a teenager it was taboo right and i rewatched him again uh this week and i mean i i bought prometheus on dvd when it came out because i thought oh this would be cool it wasn't that wasn't that cool but that was the new yeah wasn't that cool i watched prometheus because i thought it would be cool it wasn't that cool it wasn't that cool and that's all you need on that sums it up but uh i i get it i just but you like seeing this a hundred times sure but that's because yeah it was like a formative childhood movie of mine but i understand you not seeing it until later but it is something you've seen and and like right oh yeah yeah no they're fantastic movies part of them you know the the first one there's a lot of stuff that doesn't hold up as as well but like you know that going in it's 1979 i think it came out like you're not expecting uh the uh the the graphics of today but uh they're just they're classic movies that defined a genre um well yeah you can't go wrong i completely disagree with your assessment of alien but we'll we'll talk to skid about that i'm sure he has something to say i'm sure he's chomping at the bit skid hold on we're gonna get to you grant have you uh been familiar with this franchise for many many years have you watched it a hundred times absolutely like uh especially us when uh ellen comes out of uh cryo sleep and alien well a couple scenes afterwards actually when the cigarette is like all the way to the end and she's just sitting there like that image has been burned into my brand forever and uh alien yeah the the special effects and practicals really hold up um it's strange alien 3 actually has some of the worst cg work and green screening in the entire series and it came out later but yeah i've always loved all of them and right now i'm playing through alien isolation which i am thrilled to learn is actually a part of the lore in this book it's officially accepted yeah i learned the alien novels i read as a kid changed because of what they decided to do with two of the main cast members in alien 3 at the beginning which is kill two of them ah spoilers sorry sorry i didn't say which two but they based an entire series of novels on those two characters and they wrote them all before alien 3 came out and then they had to just keep the novels exactly the same same and keep their backstories the same they just changed their names later it's really funny and interesting anyway i'm sure anybody who had seen alien and then aliens and had not yet seen alien three probably went into it assuming there wouldn't be much death so you really you really spoiled that grant kate you are we discovered that during cyberpunk that you don't watch any movies of any genre at all uh because it doesn't care for them for what we would call the feature length motion picture it's not something that kate is interested in uh however upon getting this very important assignment kate jumped on it and you watched right i watched all six movies in a weekend wow that's dedication is what that is it is because it was i don't i movies are too long um i just don't i don't like movies but i watched all six of these and i honestly there were parts there were scenes that like i recognized because like existing in the world and pop culture it's like oh yeah so i was excited to like get the context and stuff um the second movie is the best one and then it just kind of peters off from that so like the last four were really like it's work it's a lot of work it's a lot of work good i like having the context the story's good but like just movies man well i mean we we really appreciate you putting in all that time that's yeah that's 12 plus hours of doing something you really don't want to do but i'm glad that the drudgery doing something that unpleasant i know really just sitting inside on my couch unvaccinated watching movies yeah i mean i'm a rabbit fan and i couldn't just sit there and watch like alien three and then i actually like alien resurrection but alien three and prometheus and oh god anyway that's some type of uh virgo dedication that warms my virgo eyes troy and i are both virgos and that's why that's why you set your mind to something you do it it's right no matter how miserable it is be on new game who dis every six weeks get ready kate she gets it i'm ready she gets me finally someone understands [Laughter] what about you skid you uh are probably the reason why alien and aliens combined with me and matthew is uh quoted more than any other film franchise on our podcast uh and you have the gifts to back it up now that we went to live video i know do you like the alien franchise i do as a matter of fact uh i'm a huge fan um i i love the i love the movies i it was also the aliens movie moviegoing experience when i saw it not opening weekend but the weekend after opening weekend is my favorite movie going experience of my entire life i went with my best friends john bell and edis allen we went to the continental theater on hand and i 25 in denver and my mom brought us and she sat way in the back let us set it way up in the front and we had the time of our lives and every time i go back to denver i'll have lunch with my friend john bell and that's the first thing we talk about is that night you want to see aliens let's see aliens and then coming back home and playing uh uh wrestling on uh nintendo nes uh until dawn like that was that was one of those nights the original nintendo with like star man and yeah oh yeah what a great night that must have been it was the best night it was if i had known that i had peaked on that night i would have been really depressed it was like it's all downhill from here buddy it will not get better than this night this is it you'll be forever chasing the dragon of that night right i literally am like that's why you keep watching this movie over and over again and it's like that's why but uh yeah trying to chase that feeling oh man i i agree with you kate that the second movie is the best movie uh i well that was my always my favorite i i grew to appreciate alien more later i think when i was a kid i just it was too scary and uh and i appreciated a lot about it later which really rolled into why i appreciate the way that the rpg is laid out with the classes and everything because i don't know it the colonial marines and the the whole plot of uh of aliens and the way it was executed was just such an epic action movie i didn't appreciate as a kid the subtleties of like the roughnecks versus the officers versus you know the the hidden synthetic i mean the hidden synthetic scene is to me still one of the most traumatic uh experiences that i've ever had that that scared me so much in the first one in the first one yeah when he starts like like it scared me so much when i was a kid uh and yeah i just to this day it's like oh and then when he just bashes it yeah like then when he's just like funny when i watch it this weekend all the scary stuff that i've been afraid of originally watching it if i watched it then it was just really funny that little uh jif this kid just put up its ash like running in place i was watching it uh two days ago and i was like something about ian holm doing that really struck me so i googled that scene and uh like just to find out information about him like because i knew he was uh synthetic and so i was just like well that was just so interesting something about that that body move that he did and i guess uh ridley scott like they he just improvised it and really scott was like can you do that again something about that i don't know i just first it was like and and bishop and the second one says yeah oh those models were a little bit twitchy a little bit twitchy yeah and so that's kind of like that but also he's like he it just seems like he's running a little bit too fast in place in that moment it's so great i don't know so many little ticks that you can get in that movie it's just little ticks like that and that's why the kind of understatement of lance henrik says yeah those models always were a bit twitchy it's so perfect he's just so level lance hendrickson in that whole uh that whole movie it's such a great like show of the range of synthetic performance you know what i mean yeah in the series and ian holm for me is i think the best performance across the series that character his tics uh especially in re-watching it's just amazing to see just like the little subtle things that he does that's just so good uh grant you had something where you guys well i just think the synthetics are the probably the most underrated and best part consistently throughout all the movies i think michael fassbender is great as david as well um i love him and in the alien isolation games that's why i'm so glad siegsen is in here because they're like a second fiddle to weyland yutani and their synthetics their tagline like you can hear ads in that game that's like wanna know which side you're on all the time never be unsure if you're dealing with a synthetic with siegson they use their technology gap for being inferior to weyland yutani as a selling point for people who are afraid of synthetics so it's wonderful they call them the the working joes right like they're working joes and they're just that you know they're synthetics it's very obvious so you have to worry about you know uh it's a very cool idea and as grant said the game has done a fantastic job of pulling all of this lore from all of these different pieces and i don't know i haven't played a lot of genre rpgs where they're just based on a very specific film franchise or book series or anything like that and so i found it so interesting reading through and and just finding within whether it's uh skills or like examples of skills or equipment or uh the history and lore and stuff like that like you could just see little tidbits you're like oh that is from that scene like they are explaining how this works based specifically on you know this scene or the way this character reacted or when the motion sensor did this you know what i mean it's like it's all based on a studious approach to like a shot by shot memorization of these films and then porting it over it's really cool the uh timeline that they have very early on in the book it's just the it just blocks out all six of the movies uh in telling the story so the uh yeah like i've never played a genre rpg we play you know pathfinder we play these other games it's gonna be really interesting to see how this our story fits into this because i don't understand is it all happening after i don't know yeah canonically it's like three years after the events of aliens right mm-hmm is that i believe that's correct i believe it's the 2180s yeah i think that's where it's it's sad i could be wrong but 2183 i think yeah 21.83 um i i've read so much that i i don't remember anything i read i read too much that that's what happened so it's it's definitely going to be uh a problem we i would be neglectful though if i didn't mention that beyond the writing of it uh the inspiration behind uh these rules and how they're put together and the mechanics and how it works really with fitting in with the genre the book is so beautiful and the artwork is so staggeringly emotionally evocative it's just it's incredible um yeah i mean grant if you could throw a few just a few random images out yeah it's just it's incredible it makes the experience of reading the book such a sheer joy and you can just feel those scenes and what's going on and it makes you want to recreate them in some way but to me i also see that as the challenge here one of the challenges that we face is creating an original story in this wonderful setting it is a wonderful setting but i want it to be an original story and i want us to work together to do that um it's going to be hard we're going to be relying on a lot of tropes a lot of our favorite aspects of it are gonna come up and that's fun uh as long as we're all having for uh you know fun that's the main thing but i also don't want everybody to know what's gonna happen like all the players to just know what you're gonna find and what's gonna happen and so uh working around that is is going to be interesting and just finding a way to make this game uh a campaign style game even though the intent of this is to play three episodes and tell a little story and then it's over i want there to be room there to breathe for the alien rpg on new game who dis uh you know whether i run it or not i want it to be there to be other and new things to explore out there uh rather than just uh oh you know you you just get swarmed by xenomorphs and die and that's that's the story or you beat them you know um i want there to be options and we can all work together to make that happen i'm excited uh let me talk about free league who produced this wonderful book published this wonderful book and does all this amazing artwork and all these incredible games right now uh free league has been awesome they were really great with this quick turnaround when i called and said please uh we need to play a new game really quickly uh they they couldn't have been more supportive or excited and uh they're helping us promote and everything and then they're going to do some giveaways so uh they're they're giving us product to give away to you guys and so i'm very excited tonight to offer everybody the newly released i'm not sure how new it is but it's pretty damn new um starter set for the alien rpg in hard copy it's a gorgeous set and uh it's i i have it i don't even have the hard copy i have it in pdf form and it's absolutely incredible i mean the maps the tokens the story the the i mean it comes with its own 50-page rulebook it is a legit chunky starter set that would really be a good way to get you started off and it has a fantastic scenario in there to just show you the system and get your players playing right away with pre-generated characters and an awesome story uh so yeah i highly recommend uh you check it out even if you don't win uh we're gonna give away one free copy and two digital copies so everybody can enter unfortunately only european and u.s and canadian winners could get the physical copy we can't ship to australia sadly sorry guys but uh everybody else still enter because if you're in australia we'll get you a digital copy don't even worry about it um thank you again to free league it's just so awesome to be working with them and to get people this awesome game dude i remember it was pax unplugged two years ago december 2019. we were walking around and we saw a setup for the alien rpg because it i think it just came out like beginning of december so this was the first con it was on display and we used to laugh and laugh about how we're never gonna play that game we're doing 900 podcasts uh but we were that was the first time we were like well maybe we should just buy it and take it no no we can't but yeah we can't do it because it just looked so gorgeous and now and now look at us now baby yeah i always bring it with the art that's they it makes me really excited for the upcoming second edition of the lord of the rings game that they're coming out with yeah because just the art in the first one is so good and this one even builds on that i can't wait to see what they have in the next edition yeah they just wrapped that kickstarter last week we backed it uh i don't know if there's any you know uh that's what i'm looking for grace period to get into that kickstarter or what but uh we we're gonna get that set as soon as it comes out hopefully it's coming this fall and we can get it on new game who did skid you wouldn't have any interest in gmming uh the one ring second dish i twist my arm i guess i mean there's such a limited interest in the in the thing i mean maybe you know i don't know here's the just see question you're right it's just some things just aren't a good fit they might be great but just for the person this just doesn't excite you i don't look at you and think yeah he'll be into that he'll be right yeah you know but have you seen the movies kate no do you know how long they are absolutely not but yeah i'll i'll watch them if i if it's a job yeah let me ask so do you watch do you watch tv shows yeah yeah i'll sit there and watch like an entire season of a television show but i won't watch a movie okay could you pretend that a movie is a tv show just like time it like at like 52 minutes take a break stop it like have phone calls and come back do that for you it like puts it up in a little bow maybe there's like a little a little cliffy but like it it it wraps it for you that's true so i'm stumped i got nothing i've done everything i can i've done all i could i don't know what to say i'll read the books before the watch the movies the books are quite good well thank you free league uh it's awesome to be working with you and we man oh i didn't even say for those that don't know the link will be in chat uh if it hasn't been dropped already brennan go ahead and drop it again uh the link is in chat for the giveaway you got to click that link go enter your info uh and then by the end of this stream brennan will draw winners and announce them in chat uh so you can find it out there and then for the physical copy he'll reach out to you and get your mailing address and stuff you guys want to jump in are we doing this are we going doing this i have no idea what i'm about to build medium preconceptions yeah i hate feeling like this like no clue what i'm yeah like i said we are we are going in raw i mean things might get a little a bit twitchy uh we are just gonna jump in and and create characters here's my idea uh i don't think we've done something like this before i'm gonna bob and weave through character creation you guys see some fun stuff i hope i hope you enjoy it uh and then each level that we get to of character creation i definitely want to have a round table and sort of a an auction style concept where if you say what class you want to do and then hear everybody's classes and then want to change you can change if you say you put a skill point somewhere and you hear where everybody else's skills shake out you want to move things around we're going to do a second pass for everybody but then once it's done it's done because after tonight you know when we get into it all that stuff is going to be set but anything that you just say is your first idea is not your last idea feel free to move and shake and help each other out and talk it out as a group uh and i think that's one of the things that you're going to see as we get started here that like this is a group game and it's important that you know as players how your characters all interact uh ahead of time uh and so yeah i guess you could kind of say in some ways it's in lieu of the uh you know the eating oatmeal scene you know like the the eating around the table on the ship scene it's like for that we're gonna go through character creation in depth and get to know all these characters by creating them live instead of having you know the moment where they all have their witty lines to each other uh before the [ย __ย ] goes down uh all right so to start i'm gonna ask everybody to go to roll 20. to start while you are starting to basically get around the concepts of your characters i'd like you to take a look at this little uh computer screen here and uh you can you gotta find it and then zoom in uh gran will throw it up on the stream but yeah you could jump in there and you can see there's a readout that's giving you a choice it says who is your employer you can choose if you are employed employed by a corporation a government the military or if you're just freelance it comes with little mechanical bonuses that are not huge in creation but uh you know they it can be depending on your mission or what you end up doing go ahead and look through those i'm going to try to find some background audio make it sound like we're on a ship now i don't want to make this decision first yeah not the order i would choose but this is i guess i have to let go yeah i don't i don't like this at all kate the virgos don't like this on another stream uh it's it's not hugely important these are very generic decisions that sort of you know just determine the style of uh your jobs and the way that they flow and stuff like that you guys are choosing what you're doing tonight it is a choose your own adventure so should you play this out and then wanna work for someone else in another stream you can do that uh you know for this particular one i want you to sort of pick who you're working for we should say uh or at least i'm assuming that this is not going to be restrictive of what our roles or classes can be later right like correct okay great your roles and classes can be and oh you know what i'm sorry i skipped a step because we did talk about this off air there are three major separations in the in the uh suggested campaign play of this game that separates the genres out there are three a space truckers game a colonial marines game and a frontier colonists game uh which obviously those of you familiar with the franchise get like kind of what all those three mean how they're different from each other uh we did an email chain uh a few days ago and just sort of chose space truckers so this is going to be a space trucker's story uh your classes will be loosely built around that there will be you know the game makes recommendations on what your classes should be in that realm but you know you guys have a good reason to be another class feel free i don't care we'll talk it all out but as space truckers that is why this first thing is who is your employer if you were a colonial marine playing a colonial marine story that this wouldn't be uh relevant at the moment so or it would be obvious it would just be number three so yeah there's there's truly no right or wrong answer here uh it's just you know what does your gut tell you go ahead pick something and then you know we'll see how that choice shakes out over the course of the of the night freelance i'm going freelance this choice applies to the whole group not like individual right correct yeah you guys all together are like okay what kind of crew do we want to be yeah well that's wildly different um oh sorry i thought that was not uh what do you guys think you want to eliminate is it easier to eliminate do you want to work for the corporation maybe maybe yeah i mean classically i guess that makes the most sense unless yeah we could be like a freelance ship crew just working for contracts like with whoever and unless we play the united progressive peoples like the socialist super government that takes over i don't want to work for government but i would love to be like the future socialist superpower as well uh but i don't want to really play as the americas or the uh weyland yutani uh what is that one called the three i think what it's called the three world or the three world empire yeah uh there's something i like about freelance because i feel like we're expendable we just need you to haul this to from here to there that's it that's the job no that's not the job it opens up like shades of gray and choices as well right like you can like uh you don't have to necessarily make the choice that your employer made like if you see a better deal come along you can screw over your employer and go elsewhere right we also probably aren't beholden to each other we have no like strong relationships with each other and so that could create some interesting conflict between each of us not quite knowing where everyone's alliances lie oh i love the drama let me uh add in just a couple notes the nap relief for anybody that doesn't know is just a it's a consumable that is relatively inexpensive but it's nice to have one that uh reduces your stress to zero immediately so it's sort of like it keeps you zoom super focused uh but it does have certain repercussions especially if you take more than one in a like 12 hour period uh there can be some interesting mechanics but that's what that is for those viewers that don't know what nap relief is it is going to lower your stress and keep you focused in a tough situation i want one of those in real life i know right sounds great i think it's called a beta blocker [Laughter] uh you know what else i'll say the reason that this is up here first is because i think you'll see at least in my opinion the way that i've looked over the games like your class choices or your career choices would stem more off of who your employer is in order to make a more focused game you know what i mean rather than picking who you are and then trying to wedge it into working for someone in particular this way you can work from the top down uh and and figure out what a good freelance crew would be composed of so yeah i think it's one or four because that lets us kind of be uh motivated just by the paycheck right and lets us kind of have the most freedom the interesting thing about the corporation is it gives us a bit more of a um a mood or a motif or a vibe to work off of weyland yutani versus seeks and it's a little bit more grounding than just like for randos right i like corp i could do it's pretty standard like we can all immediately attach ourselves to that idea yeah i agree either one of those i'm good with okay skid you choose uh man i kind of i see the benefits of both like i just i mean it seems like to stay true to some of the themes of the franchise corporation would seem to be the way to go but there's a lot of fun possibilities of thinking like we're but like rogue traders just like working for anybody we could still end up working for these corporations that is true we're not beholden to them i i think that the crew that went in to find the black box for the nostromo was a freelance crew so if you think about it that way like weyland yutani screwed that up so they needed to go out to freelancers to get them so like it's it's interesting they're both they're both great choices uh wow yeah uh uh the the corporation just for this the starting thing just the classic experience we'll do i say we should do corporation okay so this crew is working for a corporation uh we'll get more on that later uh let's move on to the next so you input this in i am employed by number one to click uh and then if you keep looking at the screen let me see if i can get this to work boop oh nice what is your specialty you have three options lift and shift typical cargo movers salvage and rescue or deep space exploration also you know what i actually just mistyped that uh it should be salvage and recovery not salvage and rescue oh you're not you're not like humanitarians you are uh if you are space truckers you're salvaging recovery well there goes our salvage guys exactly exactly i'm so excited so you made this this looks like a screen from fallout 2. this is awesome uh oh wow i don't know i mean you go deep space you know what you're getting into the unknown yeah uh salvaging rescue though like what or what is it not rescue uh recovery recovery yeah what are we recovering right wow and i think either i don't like i like the classic experience but i don't just want to remake alien so i lift and shift probably i would go with two or three personally i think i think that too yeah i feel like two i'm leaning towards more because like you said three kind of evokes the trope of the movies maybe yeah yeah i like to as well i feel like it's a good middle ground yeah like one is very pedestrian i'm sure it's not if we chose it it would not be anything but three you know it's gonna get weird two seems like a job what could go wrong well it's like it's what did those guys who rescued ripley at the beginning of aliens like what was their life like that's what that that's what that is that's right prequel to the truth uh the movie that takes place between one and two right you were that crew obviously we need to do that and we need to do it immediately okay [Laughter] okay so we're picking number two salvage and recovery uh okay fantastic i love it uh all right so we're gonna move on from that now and uh let's get into it now that you know you are a salvage and recovery team working for a corporation let's pick some careers what your jobs are on this ship this is terrifying just like go ahead yeah go ahead i was gonna say do we just like yell it out yeah you just say dibs uh and then you take whichever career you want um i'm gonna let you guys start talking about them first and rather than listing for the listeners what all the uh you know careers are you just guys start talking about them and then i'll say if we missed any or skipped any kate what are you thinking i can see you're chomping at the bit very on brand there are three that look really cool to me so i'm flexible um three that i like would be pilot roughneck or scientist um i feel like either of those would be really fun to make a character around yeah the only one of those three that interests me is rough neck but the one that i just keep coming back to is the most obvious one uh that i think will be the most fun to play uh is company man yeah we do have to have one don't we if we're working for a comprehensive you know just yeah i don't know i but i don't know like i'm not sure if i want to role play that or not like how to roll play that um but that interests me uh just be yourself troy just be here uh skid i would imagine skid you have one idea and it's the best idea of all right i do have something just say it and stop letting us embarrass ourselves well i don't know i don't know if it'll work here but like i had this idea like i didn't i wasn't gonna have an idea i just until like 90 minutes ago i started thinking about the movie outland have you guys seen that movie no no it came out in 1981 and it's sort of a sci-fi remake of the movie high noon with gary cooper and it sort of unofficially takes place in the alien universe it was uh the same lad was the producer of it and a lot of the aesthetics are the same but uh it was sean connery was plays this marshall like this frontier marshall like working on a mining station io like kind of uncovering this plot where like all this crazy stuff is happening in this thing so it's just like i thought it would be fun to play that kind of character but kind of on the run after the events of this kind of scandal that he uncovered uh earlier in his life so he might be posing as like a rough neck on the ship doing manual labor but his actual background is that of a frontier marshal that's interesting hmm complicated for sure because are you a marshall or are you a roughneck you know what i mean in terms of your career career is marshall i'm just doing manually posing as a roughneck right okay interesting it's like an air marshal yeah i like it yeah you said pilot roughneck scientist okay yeah all right so if if if we put roughneck aside pilot scientist grant anything jumping to you rough neck and pilot were jumping out at me um i i i loved the idea of a person in the future whose prospects are such that they would mortgage their life and their relationship to their family by going into cryosleep for ftl jumps you wake up it's two years later everyone back home is light years away and two years older who knows how long you'll be out there who knows how long your job will be who knows what will happen and you're getting money but you're mortgaging everything that matters to you so both of those were very interesting to me for that reason and they both seemed more like regular joes than let's say a scientist or an agent um and uh yeah so that's that's what that was what drawn to me uh for sure um we should also say just for people that might not be that familiar with the setting the depth of the setting uh it is earth's far future uh like we said 2180 somewhere in there there is faster than light travel but it's like by an order of magnitude that is very definable so it's like seven to ten times the speed of light is like usually what you can move at uh some ships can get up to like 50 times the speed of light but that's kind of the limit there is some experimental technology out there but the two-year um like actual trip you know in that amount of time is not it might be relatively about two years but it doesn't really happen that way in uh in real time i think for the most part most journeys you're looking at as a space trucker crew is for hypersleep is probably 50 days 40 days something like that because you're probably not crossing the entire known systems all the time you probably work in a region relatively but even within a region you could be going into hypersleep for weeks at a time for every single job uh and yeah that can definitely take its toll on your home life and there would be you would have to be is a person that's okay with being pretty detached from from family uh unless the money was more important so unless you really needed that money so what were you what did you come down with grant like what would you what were you leaning to in terms of class um god i'm so struck by how cool the pilot character is in aliens yeah five by five and she was just such a bad dress she's my second favorite character in the movie it's like frost is one a and she's pharaoh is one b yeah frosty is so great um i i kind of just want to play like a good natured like hard-living trucker that's like out there and that seems fun to me rough neck yeah so uh you're harry dean stanton you're young and of course um the what is the uh it is uh not officer the one that skids background was um martial marshall i kind of have a character similar to that on another show so that's yeah i've done that one before so uh just to be clear again skid is talking about a colonial marshal which is kind of like law enforcement and they they cover a region uh but sometimes they can also act like u.s marshals in a way where they are on the move tracking someone or something you know something of that nature um but in this case skid's concept is that he's a colonial marshal undercover on this ship right which is kind of fun i'd also love to play a marine but unless the scenario is like you're carrying military cargo and there's a reason for a marine to be there i don't think because they were so reticent to go anywhere and they're so specialized i think you could you could be hitching a ride though i think that's the one thing that could allow for almost anything if it's like anything you see like a military guy like taking commercial air travel like it's kind of the same thing it's just like this is a ship like i need to get home i'm on leave or something and this is the ship it was going where i need to go i'm just i wish they would let our active military service members board before 20 different groups like sapphire sapphire platinum emerald and all active us military uh joey are you gonna tell us like what our recommended classes for this or it's really just we're going to zip and zop with you uh you recommended cl i don't have it right in front of me but your recommended classes are going to be colonial uh marshall company agent uh medic officer pilot roughneck now uh could be you can add in a scientist there there is also a kid class yeah obviously based around newt they come at night mostly mostly there is a kid class uh you'd have to come up with a reason why you were a kid on this on this hauler that's not out of the question and then you're right the colonial marine is not recommended however uh skid made a good point uh you could also be a retired marine that is working security uh for a freelance group uh or for a corporation you could be a military subcontractor that has been you know attached to this sort of group by the company for your armaments and protection there's reasons you could be there like an ex-cop that does private investigating after he retires yeah like hudson hudson was two weeks away from from mustering out so like what if it was two what if that whole thing took place like two weeks later hudson's mustered out and he's getting a ride home yeah maybe that's you exactly gets pulled back into the [ย __ย ] it is feasible you know what a kid could be on there because like you know how they used to send kids through the mail that's true yeah and like it's not like they mailed them it's that they would be off with the mail carrier which everyone knew their mail carriers at the time and they'd like take them to where their parents wanted them to go for the price of like a stamp or something so that's what i'm thinking like if someone were a kid that's how maybe it could fit like i'm just on my way to grandma's planet wait i want to double check when children were mailed could you give me a date on that yeah that's in the timeline right right this is a real thing yes i feel like it was 1900s i don't know i'm guessing it just mailed 1980 yeah you could mail kids but it was in the sense where like they would just be in the car truck with the mailman so you're like don't jump in the man's truck yeah but like everyone it was in the days when everyone knew their mailman i guess it's like oh yeah still very confused we trust you with my child people would like newborn babies too they would be like yeah take them no one worried about it they put them into cryosleep they were just in the back didn't matter did you grow up in the amish section of albany i grew up close to schenectady just found this on uh smithsonian magazine a brief history of children sent through the mail in the early days of parcel posts some parents took advantage of mail in unexpected ways that's amazing there's a picture of a very tiny joe o'brien looking figure with a jeff cap on in a canvas bag on someone's side that's kind of staged i mean they didn't put sounds like an elaborate prank and i don't appreciate it i don't know i think i want to be a kid now like my premise of being on the ship is that like like the male thing i want to be this dude oh yeah oh and of course troy's going to be a company oh of course burke we're dead burke i was just waiting for one of you to be like i was kind of looking at company agent and then i would have moved on but no one said it i'm like i'm i'm pushing my chips in company company agent he has he's gone all in his chips are in um kate yeah he seemed to be the last one left and uh i just want to disclaimer on the kid thing this isn't tails from the loop this isn't like oh you got stressed and you just go home like you're putting us in a position where the stream might have to kill a kid so most people will die and everyone watching is aware i really don't want that to happen but i also don't want it to be obvious that no matter what happens kate survives well i do want i i want to play with like the risk of like my character could die and i feel like yeah with a kid okay you're right so i'm still i like the whole mailing a kid thing though that sounds so interesting cool idea i mean if you want to do it you could do it it's just dangerous water this is all i'm saying look in in the movies didn't a kid die or no that was the game michael's playing alert but newt dies during the opening credits of alien 3 as grand alluded too so yeah yeah you know what if you don't like fictional kids dying then don't watch yeah i mean there it is yeah disclaimer succinctly i want i want to do it okay a rough neck a marshall a company agent and a death marked kid oh no oh please send all of your hate mail to kate just just forward it to kate leave me out of this amazing embracing the chaos okay all right this is interesting um all right so if you guys feel pretty settled on that i'd like to like to move on to our next step here so once you sort of know what uh what career you want to do we're going to go back to roll 20. and here's what's going to happen you don't have to have your character totally formed by any stretch yet you can sort of know what your role kind of is on this crew and as a kid kate you can still be kind of figuring out why you're there if it is literally just oh you're taking me from point a to point b uh be aware that there is this risk that that they may have to go off course the company may have to send them in a different direction you know sort of like flying standby perhaps the people that put you in the situation know that that's possible i don't know uh it's it's a terrifying proposition [Music] or he as a stowaway right exactly there's a lot of options so let's keep your minds completely open as you look at this next screen this is how you're going to find out how you're going to make money and and what your job is uh what job you're working on uh here we go so go ahead and find that ah oh cool so this is the current access board of jobs available for it's all bad salvage and recovery so bad oh no like fauna sample recovery you know that's bad ship salvage sure there's nothing on that ship all right so just to lay it out i'm not going to read everything but just for our listening audience there are three jobs that have been found in this initial search there is a fauna sample recovery uh that needs to be recovered from a science exploration vessel and returned back to novo novogorod station there is a ship salvage of a ship named the faust status is unknown it has not been heard from for six weeks they have its last known position uh and then there is a mining equipment salvage in which you need to salvage a very expensive drill bit and remaining raw materials at a mining facility uh designated kmr-0730 that's a long and short of it there's a lot of other information on this screen that i'm not going to get into now there is the uh companies that are hiring there is the uh the um pay uh et cetera the system they're in the destination et cetera there's a lot of details but there's just really a summary of this job and what i want you guys to do is pick that that's sort of like the log line of your adventure and then we'll move on and we can start populating like you know what's going to happen and who these people are awesome i mean the ship salvage i love that it's called the faust yeah no communication for six weeks oh it's so bad that's like the scariest one to me i like the idea of the fauna recovery though too like that just the this spaceship space exploration vessel tranquility i just i love that the mining one sounds terrifying though because you know it's like oh yeah that uh mining equipment just fell into that endless hole over there right and that's one of my favorite things about the alien series as well is the terraforming that gets done and that's the only one that's on a hostile planet that could be like just barely tamed enough so that the the uh it's slightly better than breathing like out of a car uh exhaust pipe you know we call it a shake and bake colony we call it a shake and bake colony we manufacture those you know all of these sound cool i have no [Music] opinion like they sound else of course you know you're just a kid just shut up get back to your room now i see this maybe i might also be the first to change my mind maybe not maybe not a kid because i also want to have fun with the [ย __ย ] like i want to be like i don't know i want to fight things yeah yeah uh so the kid layout in the book i haven't delved too much into it um i had to sort of pick and choose my battles here but the kid you know isn't too powerful uh but is very lucky i believe i believe that's the way it shakes out uh can really push multiple times or something you can push some one thing multiple times you can well that depends on what talent you pick but you can also like you can avoid damage uh pretty easily and stuff you can like use agility to avoid damage where like full size people can't use that score to avoid damage i i think i might be talking out of my ass but you know we're just figuring it out um yeah so the kid has really fun and interesting defensive capabilities you know i don't think a kid is necessary look i'm not gonna just i'm not gonna decide what's going to happen in this game i'm not going to say this kid isn't going to pick up an m41a pulse rifle to go to town honestly is going to be the last one alive with a flare but yeah depending on i'm gonna leave it up to you all to pick but depending on which one we pick i might change okay which way are you leaning in terms of jobs what jumps out at you man i i this is tough i all three sound cool i think i personally am leaning more towards fauna recovery and ship salvage well you know what if we were like trying to do the recovery crew from the beginning of aliens it would be ship zelda it'd be ship salvage right yeah so right aren't they like pissed when they find ripley yeah it sets a great such a great tone from the movie because it's the first word spoken in the whole thing it's like they rescue this woman and just say well there goes our salvage guys you know so for that reason i would without any other kind of good ideas as to what to do i would pick that one we'd be working for omato industries destination lv 554 is that five four eight or fifty four no 54 b 54 b is that the that is that the colony from alien thank you okay good i was like i don't want to go there um you still want to go there that's a bad maybe i'm meta gaming but i don't think we should go there need the sound of this lv426 place i believe that these designations are generally reserved for uh planets that are not fully uh atmosphere processed or whatever the best way to say that the code names are generally mean it's a planet that is a harsh atmosphere and it's not like super safe to be walking around pardon me outside uh once a planet is fully terraformed in the lore here they usually give it a name you know of a of a greek god or something epic or powerful or something uh the uh letter designations usually mean it's a it's a harsh sort of environment oh actually lv stands for life viable which i never know yeah i never knew that either yeah i'm looking at this beautiful map on the inside cover of like oh yeah you know what colin why don't i throw it up on uh on roll 20. you can bring it up there grant just kind of show everybody if you want i don't know if you probably already have it prepped on the book yeah there it is if you guys want to take a look at it also fun fact the uh map on roll 20 has more locations than the map in the hardcover book i don't know if it was that they added later oh wow but they have more names more systems identified where did you did you pull this from roll 20 is this a roll 20 purchase or you added this yeah this is this is the roll 20 starter kit for uh alien [ย __ย ] look at this it's so gorgeous it's so gorgeous and overwhelming thank you to free league for sending it our way yeah yeah people looking at this be like i can't possibly play this game i'm not registering anything that's on the screen right now i'm just like yeah yeah you know what how about we uh how about we we put you guys in the in the uh universe here uh go ahead and scroll sort of to the left side of your map where you see the key where all the you know the the union of progressive peoples and the three world empire and the angularjs go to the united americas american arm move roughly six or seven squares to your right and you should see a small little star system called alpha for knockouts or for nasus that is where you are whoa outside government space exactly you're in the frontier you will be exiting uh from you'll be leaving from a station called novogorod station which is why some of these jobs have you returning to there uh that is your location isn't that the station from alien isolation am i wrong i believe that it was created for this rpg i think that could be wrong station is very similar to sevastopol like it's the same type yeah same kind of like um i think there's a ship like the nostromo that shows up somewhere else and like they're the same type of class basically okay um it may actually be a real system if you look up alpha for nasa's it's on wikipedia yeah a lot of these are yeah yeah that's awesome i've got such a nerd direction right now sorry sorry i do me too me too this is so awesome all right all right so let's keep it moving we got to pick something here so uh uh number two number two oh sorry i left that screen i apologize uh i could put it back for you guys um all right number two i'm cool with you yeah uh so straight up ship salvage okay yeah so that's what we're doing grant you said you were being a rough neck mm-hmm i'm gonna be a pilot instead okay and i changed my mind again but child pilot yes [Applause] yeah i really wanna i wanna be your dad then and i wanna just make you feel terrible about every choice you make just like that guys i'm gonna get the glasses and a pair of white gloves and i'm just going to look like this the rest of the stream [Music] and every the whole talk amongst the ship is like should we really have a kid be piloting this officer because none of you picked officer so like right that's something we're gonna have to figure out uh and so yeah the officer is just you know like shut up i've made my choices the kid's the pilot i don't have any more lit the kids got talent i think it's actually with this uh salvation recovery as being the basis of our mission it's uh super important that there's a rough neck there to like uh go out and get the stuff like he's the guy putting on the suit and like attaching himself to the side of the ship as he floats out and zero grav to like get on to it like that's that's my that's a cool roll it's scary though you're the only guy that would know how to do that stuff so can the officer be an npc then um yep yeah you guys want an officer npc yeah yeah like if one of us dies next week and we just take on that role sure yep when one of us dies next week right i mean someone might die today it's possible during character creation killed in an unforeseeable space accident the way i i envisioned it i have an active imagination since you've switched to pilot the kid already died that's the way i look at it sorry that's just i have another actor of imagination anyway poor kid stuck on the airlock we exploded uh all right so we've got quite a crew here all right and then we're doing number two number two omado industries ship salvage 69 uads 69 000. ship the files is that each is that no that is total that's the total payout for the for the gig uh just to give you an idea if you are a rough neck on one of these haulers you probably make something in the area of you should expect to make around 25 000 uad a year uh so this you know this is a good paying job it's a decent paying job and uh i have been working over here sorry for a second and this is probably gonna happen during the stream i hope i'm sorry if i get a little lost but uh i got you guys an officer yeah oh yeah so go ahead and uh go well i can't i guess i could just show you hopefully this works your officer is a guy named albert johns he's 47 years old look at that tom dude yeah he's got a trustworthy face i take orders from him maybe uh all right let's get back into it uh i just want to say i just feel like john's and i are going to butt heads would i'd be shocked i'd be shocked if you butt heads with one of my npcs uh all right let's start working on building out the numbers of your characters let's do a sign characteristics all right so the first step of this process and i'm hoping that this is pretty quick obviously things move at our own speed but the first thing that we're going to do here is assign attributes in order to do that you're going to assign a number of points to your four attributes strength agility widths and empathy and each of those is you're going to have 14 points so take 14 divided among your four attributes you may assign no less than two and no more than four points to any attribute with the exception of your career's key attribute that you can make a five if you'd like and that's it it's as simple as that you have 14 14 total to split among these four attributes strength agility wits and empathy strength is going to cover a lot of things everything from your hp to your ability to fight hand to hand to your ability to withstand uh harsh environments etc your fortitude as it were it also actually equates to your ability to work heavy machinery it's sort of it is the key ability score of the roughneck for example so it covers a lot of their uh areas sorry what'd you say done yeah it should be pretty quick agility is going to cover obviously your sprightliness your speed your accuracy at range with ranged weapons uh your piloting also comes under agility that would be the key ability score of the pilot class it's also the key ability score of the kid um then there's wits which is going to be your perception checks your survival checks your uh you know in terms of like getting on and finding ways to cope in harsh environments it also covers basically computers working with computers and uh etc that is under wits i don't know is that the company agent's key ability yeah yeah and then uh finally there's empathy which is going to cover your ability to command people your ability to manipulate or lie to people it also covers your ability to care for people so it comes under medical aid it is the primary ability score of the medic which uh none of you chose and which i will assign to your crew via npc so uh you will have a medic fear not fear not we'll make it happen i think i'm missing a page from my character sheet because i don't have any of those things on mine so i'm just going to write it down on a piece of paper i mean they're right in the center of the character sheet like slam in the middle what i don't see agility oh i see it now it's it's a sneaky little character sheet i think it's pretty sexy it's cool it's designed really well but i can't read anything all right cool i have my character screen up on the screen right now joe's art if i read mine out as long as it's up so people can kind of associate the skills with the scores right the key attribute of a rough neck is strength so i have a five there i like to think that uh he's kind of like a matthew mcconaughey dazed and confused type so he's good with wits actually he's like not good at school but he's good at kind of talking people out of things and observing and surviving um and i think he's like a little bit past his prime and his wits have allowed him to get there he's got a two in empathy fits a roughneck kind of perfectly and a three in agility uh he probably hurt his knee once uh lifting some salvage once so he's not as as quick as he used to be uh and that's that's that's my roughnecks attributes awesome awesome troy what are your numbers you said you were done quick what are they read them off yeah and i've changed them four times since uh i went five for widths uh four for empathy uh three agility two strengths oh and remember that strength score is your number of hit points so that's that's two hit points uh a normal weapon does one damage on a hit um you can negate it with rolls and stuff dodge armor whatever pardon me but uh having two hp means ah how you could get hurt really quick a little squishy but it makes sense for a company agent uh skip what are your numbers so yeah my guy he's a he's a martial colonial marshal he's based on sean connery's character in outland so his key attribute is wits i got a five in wits and i keep going back and forth as to whether put a four in empathy and a three in strength or vice versa but right now i think i'm gonna settle on four in strength suppose we said the hit point thing we've got foreign strength and three in empathy and two agility i also think it makes a lot of sense because uh you are posing as a rough neck so like you need to be uh acting as a could be your key ability score yeah i gotta handle the work mm-hmm also just keep in mind in case i didn't make it clear you don't have to put a five in your keyability score you can but you don't have to uh you could spread yourself out a little bit more uh all right kate what do you got for numbers i think i did this math right so my um key ability is agility so i did the five there and then i did four in widths i just feel like they need to be have their senses about them if you're a pilot um i did three in empathy just kind of middle of the road there and then two in strength okay sounds good um hey a medic has joined your crew oh uh yeah his name is uh liam flynn there he is right there 27 year old medic oh i got a feeling i'm gonna butt heads with flynn oh maybe they'll let this with your yeah kate go to your room could you please also play flynn playing on your character um all right that's everybody's initial starting uh numbers there right all right so why don't we move on to assigning your skill ranks your skill points uh very uh it's a very similar situation here we're going to be spreading them out over a series of 12 different skills three for each ability score each ability is a tie is tied to a certain skill um starting out uh you get 10 points to spread amongst your skills so your skills for the most part are going to be less than uh your your abilities in terms of their overall power but they do basically add bonus base dye to your rolls we hadn't said this but it's a d6 system so these numbers that we're putting in here are going to end up being how many die you roll when you are checking that particular skill there's a wide range of skills i'm not going to go into all of them we'll see them come up as we play but there are three assigned to each attribute and what's the min and what's the max we're allowed to put in at character creation uh there is no min or max from what i can tell i i thought i read somewhere that you can't have more than eight die in a s in a skill roll a character creation uh i i could be wrong but uh so you can just put like eight in one thing and two in another that seems crazy i feel like there's a remember oh no i'm sorry you can assign up to three points for each skill this is the same as tails from the loop but obviously no min because there's gonna be plenty of zeros sorry i gotta i gotta here we go again you can assign up to three points only in the skills that are associated with your career you can only assign one point to any other skill oh so much more wow sorry i had a hard time reading that and a total of 10 10 points all together a total of 10 points so if you max your career skills that leaves you one point to put in one of the other nine skills all of the rest would be zero now in this game you can roll any skill even if you don't have a point in it you just use the base uh attribute score um but to give you a broader idea of the math of it you generally need to you have to have about a five in base dice in order to have a better than 50 50 chance of getting a roll so if you are lower than five you are under a 50 50 chance of hitting a success this is [ย __ย ] great i'll roll mine out right now i went three for observation and two for survival because those are both wits related skills and then i went one close combat one stamina one mobility and uh one command and one manipulation this is so cool i wish i was playing i'm so furious i decided to do this what an amazing thing we're gonna have to play out these other uh missions we gotta go do that mining operation eventually we gotta go do the fauna uh and yeah that's those two but don't forget the other six there's six other missions there's three under deep space exploration there's three under lift and shift right you guys you chose you chose pole no you chose amazingly oh [Laughter] uh kate are you finished one more point left to put somewhere but for now i've got let's vote on it okay piloting well such a min max trash i've got three in piloting three in ranged combat those are both agility and then i put two in comm tech because i can and then one in stamina and then i've got one more point that i can use something fun maybe survival maybe manipulation maybe command like i don't know ooh why are you allowed to put two in com tech is that a that's one of my special skills as a pilot there's like three different ones you could put three in but i didn't want to put three in that so i put two oh i mean my special skills i'm sorry i don't think so is agility your your your key ability agility is my key ability but if you go to pilot the key skills are piloting ranged combat and context oh i'm sorry i get oh yep you're right and i'm wrong uh i guess yeah there are key skills you can put three in your key skills it's not necessarily only the three of your key ability okay well it's interesting because the roughnecks key skills are all linked to the key attribute but to make delineations between the different choices you can make i think they spread out the key skills for pilot that's cool between two that's neat i like that i like that uh okay so you put a two in comm tech is that what you said yep yeah that's cool because you you want to have somebody that can com tech is your basic your computer skill your ability to work with computers uh to work with communication systems it's an important thing to have like work with androids or like yeah you can repair androids uh you can yeah there's a lot that you can do with that and in general it's um here's another thing i just want to say real quick is this got this great concept within the setting that is the the degenerative sort of technology age that we're in it's like the technology used to be better and now it has devolved and things are a little bit worse than they were in terms of sheer technology but they're a little heartier and they're relying on things that can withstand the pressures of space a vacuum of space or harsh environments et cetera so things certainly warhammer sort of like warhammer 40k in that way yeah yeah and aliens was a huge influence on that franchise too with kate's new knowledge here i've changed mine because my key skills are com tech observation and manipulation so i went i kept my three in observation i put two in com tech two in manipulation and then one one one in stamina mobility and command okay so you dropped off survival you were dropped out of survival and i cool put two in contact and i didn't have okay and then skid how did yours all shake out uh i got my key skills arranged combat observation and manipulation so i got two in range combat two in observation two manipulation one in heavy machinery to kind of fake my way through the roughneck thing great uh one in close combat one in stamina one in survival okay oh that's so cool uh all right awesome and grant we got yours right yeah no we didn't oh we didn't i'm sorry i thought you were first so i'll throw mine up on screen uh i put three in heavy machinery two in close combat one in stamina i'm trying to role play being a little bit older and i think he might have had a two at one point there uh but he has a one an observation a one in survival and a one in combat his other lesser attribute scores have no additional points uh instituted into them and part of that choice uh made sense for the character but part of it was also just you doing the math on needing a five to break even so why do i even want to kind of get from a three to a four is it statistically that much better if i'm still less than a fifty percent chance i'm still gonna be frustrated on those roles either way so i thought i might as well have fifties or better on the things that i'm good at and i'll just expect to feel and it'll be a pleasant surprise if i pass range combat mobility piloting command manipulation or medicine okay hey we don't know we've never played this game well we'll see how it all shakes out all right now we move on to choosing your talent you get to choose one talent a character creation three are given to you under each career you pick one of those three that is your starting talent over the course of the game there is character development you can get pay experience points to get more talents uh not only within your class but you can also get a whole uh there's a whole long list of general talents that you could grab to start with i'm not a hundred percent sure but i believe that the um do you have to pick one of your career talents to start that's the way the wording seems to me yeah that's how i read it uh this is awesome uh while you guys are looking at that let me just real quick remind everybody that we are giving away a copy of the starter set tonight uh of actually multiple copies of uh the alien starter set it was gifted to us by free league to give away to you guys so you can try out the game yourselves it is a beautiful starter kit a 50 page rule book and a gorgeous star map tokens uh uh npc um uh character sheets and artwork as well as pcs there's a there's all pre-generated characters built into a really awesome uh scenario that you can get really in-depth into the game it's a really cool really cool guy nice too right doesn't it come with a special yeah it comes with the special dice that are unique to this game which is awesome and it is yeah you could get it here tonight brennan will drop that link in chat click on the link enter the giveaway if you are based in the us canada or europe we can ship you a physical copy of it we're gonna give away one physical copy two digital copies so still enter if you're uh from australia or singapore or anywhere else in the world and we will uh get you a digital copy if your name is drawn thank you again to free league for that what do you guys got let me kick it over to skid first this time skid what what talent did you go with i went with investigator i think that's his focus is just kind of figuring stuff out that's breaking the case that's his thing okay cool sorry what does that give you i don't know okay well i'm sure we'll get into it during gameplay anyway uh grant so my options are between resilient the long-haul and true grit so resilient will allow me to roll for strength uh when you roll a point of damage so that seems to be giving me just some more survivability the long haul means that i've seen it and done it all before nothing surprises you anymore once per act in cinematic play and once per game session campaign play you may ignore all stress from a single role that's pretty good final choice is true grit which i am uh partial to life on the frontier is a constant struggle luckily you have what it takes to overcome anything that comes your way you can push any skill role based on strength twice not just once like other characters each push increases your stress level by one oh that's great it is great however strength i'm so jacked up in and i have good points invested in it i think i'm gonna avoid the stress dice not really knowing how the game works out because again i keep on coming back to this rough neck who's been around the block once or twice and the long haul kind of fits my character the most you can't avoid this like i think i'm going to avoid getting killed it's kind of part of the game but i am with you i think you totally should uh all right troy would you would you do for talent the one that first jumped out to me is the obvious one personal safety that basically uh if [ย __ย ] goes down you basically just throw another character in front of it ah that's amazing that's what happened to the kid that's pretty much what happened to the kids like before our adventure starts that's what happened and they still talk about it did he did the company guy throw that kid in front of the uh we don't talk about the kid we don't talk about the kid yeah if you're attacked or otherwise end up in fatal danger and if another pc or friendly npc is within short range you can make a manipulation roll if you succeed you see the threat coming and find a clever way to make the other characters suffer the attacker hazard it's so awful i don't want to do that i don't want to i don't want to get into that pvp so i'm going to uh i am going to do take control though um i think that's going to be yeah cunning is very cool but take control you know how to make people do what you want and you don't feel bad about doing it you can roll for manipulation using wits instead of empathy this is shades of a mechanic that uh colonel luther has with a little swap in the thing for the that strength for the wisdom yeah a little zip for the zap a little charisma uh yeah i mean that's the thing is like he's uh he's all business what is it okama corporation autonomous industries take control okay i do know what investigator is now if you want to hear yes please this is this is pretty cool so you see what others miss and are skilled at noticing small details and making sense of them when you spend a turn turn capitalize in a room or similar location you can roll for observation only one attempt is allowed for each success you roll may you may ask the gm one of the following questions that gm must answer truthfully but she is allowed to give vague or incomplete information what happened here is there anything hidden here and if so where and are there any details here that are out of place something that's out of the ordinary love it very cool very very cool uh it is let's see uh scenario breaking that's the word i was looking for right it is scenario breaking it's bloody why it's awesome it's black reader is what it is i kind of want to cast my guy as oscar isaac oh i like that yeah i was trying to find a guy just i was googling just uh you know handsome sly actors and his picture i'm like well i could picture oscar eyes buttoned up tie briefcase doing that of course of course if we were to do that if we exactly uh kate what did you go with for talent let me tell you what i'm going to go with she's getting handled she's doing it she's getting into it you get the choice out of three two of them have to do with just piloting full throttle i like to go fast or like the back of your hand which means i know my vehicle very well and i can make that be any vehicle and it can be more than one then the third one reckless you live for the rush of adrenaline through your veins pushing harder than others there you can push any skill roll based on agility twice not just once like other characters each push increases your stress level by one so it's similar to grant's true grit which you didn't take now i want to take true grit the way you put it you really sold it yeah as you were saying it i was like crap so dumb you nailed it you nailed it nailed it nailed it uh great job uh okay let's see what does that put us here in the in the flow of character creation we're getting there guys we are really getting there um i never want this to end all right so uh moving on to stress you start with zero stress that that's that's how you start out stress is the mechanic that comes up you can spend stress in order to uh do certain things like pushing rolls re-rolling uh stuff like that but as you spend stress uh your current stress score as it goes up means you have to add stress dye to all of your rolls and if you ever if any of those die ever come up a one or this special uh face hugger symbol that they have on the unique die for this game it means that uh you risk panicking uh which is so awesome so you're you're pushing yourself so uh it's not only that you're risking panic also remember that is an extra die and if it comes up as a success that's a success so your stress can also make you fine-tune your yourself to succeed at something but you're also risking if it goes the other way you could snap which is very fun is this what the year zero engine is yeah yeah okay because it's [ย __ย ] brilliant and it's great and so they just they just use this in all the games in a different iteration i don't know all the details i know it's it's similar to uh it's what they use and tell us from the loop but that's that's all i know if i haven't explored all the other ones smart really smart it's really awesome um your health starts equal to your strength score so uh go ahead in your health uh area you can just put uh you could check off a number of boxes equal to your stress score that's your starting health i don't think anybody had a talent that changed that um in reducing stress is that linked to an attribute or is there an ability or can you oh there's that drug you brought up at the beginning that we would have an extra one if we were a freelancer that we can take is there any other way to reduce stress uh yes you can you can uh you can spend time with your uh signature object we'll get into that um that can uh relieve stress you can 10 minutes break if you have a 10 minute break you can also take a turn if there's if you're not under fire or whatever you can relieve one point of stress with a 10 minute break of no pressure uh so you mentioned earlier capital t turn a turn is roughly five to ten minutes a round is just like a is a heartbeat it's three to five seconds uh very fast that's a round a turn is five to ten minutes and then a shift is five to eight hours uh and so there are mechanics that are like you can do this once per shift or you have to sleep one shift a day or else you're exhausted like stuff like that you know what i've uh that's made me change my mind i have a little meta gaming from having played tails from the loop i remember all the times i rolled a ton of dice and still failed my skill checks and i am going with true grit now true grit high five pilot oh that's awesome you guys should be the buddies you guys you're gonna be friends yeah yeah we should we should get to that should get to that soon well that's right you have relationships yeah we are we are going to get to that we're just about there actually uh i just wanted to key up some music here i gotta i gotta run this game and do the music so forgive me things get a little slow but um life is hard running at the top what are you gonna do when the spotlight is on you that's right what you gonna do when the spotlight runs wild over you sorry brother sorry brother uh all right i want you guys to to keep thinking keep delving deep into your characters here but we're going to uh we're going to move on for the moment uh and continue with our story so so far you have chosen a uh you've chosen a uh company uh you you want to work for the company in this case omada industries uh is who you're working for at the moment you uh have chosen that you are a salvaging recovery team that's your primary specialty you can dabble in the other stuff but that is your specialty that's what you feel like you're built for and you have uh chosen a job it is a ship salvage of a ship called the faust uh which has not been heard from in six weeks you know that uh you know the system that you're going to uh the uh what is it uh it's system and nn3293 otherwise yeah name system otherwise called the new a cluster and it is uh and the destination within that system is lv54b i need you to name your ship oh thank you i thought you were just gonna tell us here we go no chance good buddy oh man this is a big freaking deal yeah oh it's got to be good and nick we can play off themes we're space truckers yeah your trucker you you know like kind of the jobs you do now you know what your classes are like you take you can narrow down a little bit to say what are we going to name this thing what is it the iscs what is the designation for these ships yeah uscss i mean it depends on who they're they're designated for but yeah mostly if they're uh ua ships um that's usually the designation well for truckers maybe maybe the burt reynolds that's yeah there is part of me and again skid said that like we're trying to avoid being too on the nose and like alien but since prometheus was out there i'm thinking of other titans hyperion is the name of a titan also a name of a very good book it's a cool freaking name for a ship it doesn't sound good out there i like that too how about the burt pirian bert pierre that's pretty good yeah red period is not bad yeah that's that's a good very good compromise i like that no one i mean no one messes with the crew of the burt pirian it is known it is we know it's not taken we know that no one else has that name so we'll never have conflicts when we're like porting somewhere right i hope uh 20th century studios doesn't come calling to produce alien seven all based around the misadventures of the bert period uh could you go ahead and spell that for me is it i think it's pretty self-evident no p-y r-i-o-n oh just looking at that name no one's going to be able to pronounce it let's make you sick oh bernie you got another year in your buddy one more job that's so cool we have a communication coming in from the salvage vessel bert period earth period we've made connection and hyperion oh god so good when the comment be like ready go okay done perfect so you guys uh you've chosen your job and you begin to set off for the new a cluster which uh is going to be a rather lengthy trip this is pretty extreme frontier uh where you're headed uh if you look on the star map it is uncharted it is essentially an uncharted system uh and it is uh i i put it in there sorry i i forget now what was it it was um no i don't know uh it is it's basically about a 60-day hypersleep it's gonna be about a 60-day travel to get there you guys go into hypersleep and begin your journey there hypersleep is a very interesting thing you can dream in hypersleep you can especially if you get good at it you can control your dreams in hypersleep you can have entire experiences and adventures uh you can even if people have the right technology outside of your compartment communicate with people outside of your compartment during hypersleep which is very cool if they have the right equipment and they're right through your dreams in real life i used to be able to i can't i used to be able to when i was a kid i can't anymore i i do it i have sex with everything oh my god get [Laughter] i cannot control my dreams no i i get in really frustrated like uh scenarios where i'm just like looping through stuff like programming me too i just get stuck like how do i fix this and then i wake up and it's terrible i had one dream when i was a kid that i remember very vividly of like being able to fly and like it was controlling the matrix but like skid i have lost the ability i don't remember most of my dreams anymore yeah me neither because i'm living the dream [ย __ย ] yeah all right the um i forget what it's called the icss i can't remember what it is but uscss that's the uh maybe maybe sorry i was playing a weird song there all right here we go that was that was it uh all right very confusing you see the shot comes up deep space blackness just stars in the distance no no coloration just complete deep space we see a vessel slowly moving into the shot you know underneath icss per period [Music] you have a g-class freighter crew six it says next to the local crew six g-class freighter which is rather large it has a full ftl system uh large rather large cargo bays and is designed for this sort of lengthy travel into the frontier and has the proper proper heavy machinery and expertise and personnel for deep salvage you work for a company called amato uh industries and we come into the ship and we see it's silent it's you're arriving now where you're meant to be and so the ship starts this is this is turning systems on lights start coming on and your pods open everybody's slowly getting up getting used to that post hibernation uh equalization some of you might be a little sick wasn't everybody go ahead and give me a stamina roll oh wow oh right out the gate oh all right so you roll your stat plus you need your stat plus your stamina score and you need a six to succeed ah five oh wow one success okay one success all right so we see this rough neck which is skid the rough neck see this rough neck stand up gets his feet under him is it a man yeah okay uh all we're seeing right now is just surface that's all we're seeing is surface at the moment uh what about troy did you roll any successes no five was my highest no successes so you're just sort of like you got a bucket and you're just the company yeah throw it up into a bucket [Applause] we have uh what did you get there kate one success one success okay so you also getting your feet under you stretching looking very agile looking very light on your feet uh grant what about you yeah you see a rather large man kind of crack his neck you hear his knees pop as he pulls them down from the side of the hypersleep chamber onto the ground and he vomits but he does so like nonchalantly and he just like swipes it off to the side oh and he's like well looks like it's time to get back into the saddle again officer johns who is your boss who's in charge of this ship stands up he's fine looks over just says god damn it clean that [ย __ย ] up walks out from the room throws his head behind him checking in with mother he disappears down a hallway fast forward to everybody sitting around a table laughing doing your thing john's comes out very serious look on his face not not amused and not happy it seems about whatever mother has told him he comes out and he's like everybody gather around get over here sit down sits down very serious look on his face says we've arrived in system and well lv54b they neglected to tell us it's a goddamn debris field planet was glassed according to mother it's it's it's a disaster it's just pieces everywhere it's gonna be a nightmare to fly through he looks at you kate looks at your character turns back and i got a letter and it is not good well it could be good it's from mr amato himself this is weird you do not get letters directly from juan amato who is the head of this company no normally the only thing you get in the mail is children my character leans forward we haven't named our characters yet so no we're yeah that's that's that's okay i know he leans forward when he hears that amato sent a letter yeah he says he's watching this mission with extreme interest apparently he is aware that the faust has not communicated he says he's got something very valuable on that vessel the goddamn monarch class which you know means it's huge it is a huge ship spacex yep it is a space hulk it is not something you could possibly like pick for parts and just come home and immediately your mind starts working and you start realizing you're talking about probably cargo here like that's what you're salvaging is like if you can find this thing it's cargo he his tone is friendly friendly enough he says he says he can't send communications through normal channels and he wants eyes on the situation he wants his own company men handling it looking around the table well look this could be a good thing right i mean if his personal interest is in this it's uh it's uh you know it just means we got to do a good job but we could do a good job it also means that we can make a lot of money off this this he's got something valuable in there and you know if we can get it for him then uh yeah we could get paid way more than what that that job post said by that same token though if we don't i mean the money's not going to matter not only will we not get paid i mean he could just take us out how long have you guys been on this ship together do you think ballpark and have you all been together for a while or one of you knew or you know how long has uh troy has your character been in the company uh he's been in the company for five years okay and uh this is his first time with this crew he was sent by motto industries to oversee this uh at the time he didn't know what the real situation was until uh captain john's just uh gave this information but now it's all uh sort of piecing together for him that like this is a huge opportunity for him do well on this rise up the ranks yeah yeah what about the rest of you guys have you been on the ship for a little while or skid are you have you just gotten here like have you only been here hiding out for a little bit i think i'm new too i think this is my first time with the crew also i'm guessing okay uh what about you grant i think my character was poached from sigson by a motto he had been a roughneck for a long time and been on a lot of high value um jobs and amato probably had corporate spies looking into seeks and like looked at their performance charts like get this guy over and it cost nothing to a motto relative to the amount a roughneck makes in a year to give him a couple thousand more credits a year and he's been loyal ever since like i think he's like totally uh like tired of the situation but he also like really respects amato because he gave him a better life who's been on the ship for some time or at least in the system and what about the pilot i feel like since i want to say the pilot and grant's character are friends or know each other maybe i imagine my pilot's kind of young and maybe he looks up to grant's character and maybe this is their first long-term job and a ship that they know really well maybe you guys came over together maybe maybe that's something and i think the relationship between a rough deck and a pilot is like a performer and a writer on snl like they have to work in sync and if they don't like none of the jobs go right so they probably play cards like i think we probably like play like uh 21 hold them all the time okay very cool so that would mean that in this situation your commander you're not your commander your officer your your officer that's in charge of the ship albert johns as he says this and as he says the opportunity that could be there shares a look with troy's character holds it for kind of an extra second uh troy go ahead and roll a um observation oh i will let me just get eight d6s real quick wow man oh my gosh oh god i don't know if i can hold all of these son of a [ย __ย ] that's a lot of d6s ah oddly enough only one six one six that's enough for the two of you to exchange a look that's not surprising to the rest of you you don't think this is suspicious this is like you know these two have worked together for a while now and you know that the company agent knows more than you do about wanamato and his industries and you know better than to ask too many questions you know just do your job just dude is look at the captain cuts to my guy cuts back to the captain comes back to the captain but here's what the viewers don't see the exchange that you have means you both understand the same thing there's there's a dark secret to a motto industries and their success a lot of it has come from what some call the yamato syndicate which is essentially his crime operations that have made him a lot of money and as part of those crime operations he is not been nabbed for this but there's a lot of suspicion out there that he could be doing some major drug running and part of that could be this new drug that is really hitting hard right now called slip you may know troy probably do that this could be this kind of a situation particularly because he is sending a personal message to a ship that it was not posted publicly anywhere near what this opportunity was or what it would be it is so far out here and it's this huge ship that you couldn't possibly salvage there's a good chance you might be looking at cargo that is illegal and is highly valuable so that if you recovered it the operations that could come from this i mean the up the operations that they would be able to succeed with after this could be so huge that would just be like you could probably retire there's a chance right if you got it all out of here but it's thinking this is a drug that could be like uh fabricated uh like um like a bio drug that they're using they're taking stuff from other worlds and synthetically fabricating some kind of crazy drug and so if that's the score yeah this is this is big money that's 69 000 we were promised is like that's a tip right exactly you also the rest of you probably think of this as maybe even an easier salvage job not the pilot because it is going to be it's a debris field so there's a kind of inherent danger there uh it is a destroyed planetoid is is where you are and it's just a it's a mess of gravitational forces and stuff in this particular orbit but knowing the size of this vessel yeah it might be hard to work your way through the whole thing but you probably are just here to pick up a particular piece of cargo for the big boss and get it back normally that could be as simple as a black box sort of thing a log a ship's log or it could just be some valuables something valuable that it was carrying that you want to you know get back on board mother also got a signature from the ship it's there it's it's unresponsive and that crew is large to be unresponsive uh i don't know what could have happened we're gonna have to find out what happened on that ship and more importantly than that get mr amato's cargo off of there as far as i'm concerned we need to do it fast get in get out get the hell out of this debris field but some for some rogue asteroid makes us a distant memory and i just want to remind all of you that haven't worked here for too long that mr amato is a generous man but he also uh he doesn't take kindly to those that don't deliver on the jobs that they're given so so yeah it's going to get dangerous out there but but we can do it and we just need to see it through all right all right let's uh start getting uh underway here get uh things pieced together we gotta find out what's going on with this ship and we'll close in on as soon as possible uh and he gets up at that point uh let's go back into your character creation let's get names let's get agendas what do you guys want to do on this mission individually what are you looking for what do you want out of it who are your buddies who are your rivals we're adding another layer here um how are you guys doing on character names are you there yet do you need a few more minutes everybody there okay i love it you guys are the best all right grant nodded uh very vigorously so i'm gonna head to grant first grant what do you got for uh character name well my christian name is hank pecos but you can call me knucklehead knucklehead pecos knucklehead pecos i love fighting i love loading and i love living oh god uh love fighting love living what was the last one loading uh what's what's his height is he he's six he's over six foot right he's gotta be six foot seven if the day is 24 hours long and it is at least on earth i don't know where we are now the lv whatever oh my god uh well uh and by the way as you as the end of the uh initiative happens he's just chawing on like an old cigar that he put into hypersleep with him and like the room is full with his accurate smoke and i'm sure like people are like gnawing it out of their face but he's just leaning back and he's only he's wearing a pair of whitey tighties and ostrich cowboy boots and he hasn't on the table he's leaning back he's got really hairy thighs and he's just like he's scratching his chest hair right now oh yeah amazing uh well we know he loves fighting we know he loves living and loves loading uh what is he what does he hate what does he hate um and that's not from a list like personal agenda or appearance or anything like that no i'm just [ย __ย ] i'm just asking i don't know if you know if there's something in mind you had there or if he's just a lover of everything i think he hates corporate types to be honest with you oh okay he might kind of get in the way of uh the work real people kind of do out there okay great just my opinion though you don't have to take it you can leave it if you want agendas are there are three suggested agendas given to every career um these are generic enough that they could probably apply to a lot of different campaigns a lot of different stories you guys could feel free to pick one of those or you could make an agenda that's very specific to this mission which is part of the mechanic uh and i'm i'm totally fine either way if you feel like you don't have something specific for this mission you want to use more generic one that you could evolve over time you can do that you're also free to change agendas uh next episode or the one after or whatever uh and feel free to make an agenda if you'd like that the other characters don't know and shouldn't know but that the players know and that helps us build the story but if you want to keep something super secret you can also hit me up through chat or we can just talk after the session before next session uh there's a lot of different ways to do agenda uh does hank knucklehead pecos have a uh an agenda in mind after he hears what this what the situation is here um i think that the thing that also kind of brings hank closer to the as to be named uh pilot on the crew is that he's a compulsive thrill seeker there's aristote you'll step up uh and try it i think i'm thinking of like uh people who ride bulls like eight seconds like that type of guy that's why he likes doing this um and um the bigger the the risk the higher the payout usually and he's happy to be on a job like this okay i'm just looking from the list in the book i figure it's a fun way to do it bigger the risk better the payout and so you're up for it uh okay great uh and your buddy is gonna be kate's character is that correct grant yes if if if kate will have me uh yeah and then uh what about your rival would you would you say your rival's troy's character because he's a company agent uh you've spent a little time here i think it depends i feel like both i feel like a lot of times in uh in these jobs you kind of get put into hyper sleep right away and you wake up and kind of meet the new people you're working with so he might be feeling him out a bit but i guess we have to decide this now who are the other people on the ship there's a medic an officer yeah i mean i personally think it's better if you choose a pc it just makes it a little more interesting and there's no reason you couldn't choose skid i mean he's the other rough neck you know what i mean so it's possible that you guys are competing with each other you know as far as how how much work you do or how you know what your wages are or whatever um and rival you know just by the word it doesn't mean enemy it just means rival like you're just you're never always you kind of want to you're one up each other pencil me in for troy for the contrast but allow me to erase her that out and make it excuse his character because i like the idea of him slowly figuring out he's not a rough neck and like there's something not right the best smell test to me you can also uh change buddies or rivals as the story goes on and at any point you're just like i want to change my freaking buddy because what just happened you are absolutely free to do that let's kick it over to kate do you have a name for us i literally just wrote one down i'm on like a name generator site i'm like oh my god what's the name um so they have a nickname uh people call them dizzy because you know you're driving you're gonna get dizzy you're gonna get dizzy tonight their real name though that's like on their jacket or their hat is elliot burns oh elliot dizzy burns and pronoun day yeah okay former jazz trumpet player elliott dizzy burns used to play the black cat downtown give it all up to be a pilot for the bert period okay the musician's sensible easy backup career of being an ace pilot uh that is fantastic all right so uh hank's buddy is dizzy burns dizzy and knucklehead dizzy and knucklehead they're at it again uh what does dizzy look like uh they're not small but maybe on the skinnier side um kind of just like a straight up and down body beam pole yeah a bean pole person okay a people person i have like an angular face like maybe they're still growing into their features um they have a dead pan expression i'm gonna i'm gonna take a lot of this appearance it's in the book i like the dead pan expression i like the arrogant vibe i like you know uh an intense eye color so maybe they have like bright green eyes cool cool always chewing gum this is great it has some shades on yeah nice where's aviators all of this all of this under the appearance i like okay great uh what about their personality i mean uh what is their disposition generally do you have anything yet you don't have to um i'm not sure i think with the deadpan expression and like maybe arrogant vibe like arrogant walk there's something there with the personality but also being with uh grant what's your character's name again hank knucklehead pecos maybe like to hank a little bit more deference a little bit more like oh yes see me hank like see me as number one um got it uh okay uh cool um i also want to say uh i think that you feel a sort of similar disposition uh troy in the officer in albert who you've now worked with for a little while you feel like you could kind of run this ship if you just decided to you know no he doesn't he's a little differential to you at times but just a little nugget for you there he's he's a little bit oh what do you think you know what i mean he knows you know you're in with the company too and he might follow your lead a little more and you're like are you supposed to be in charge of this thing you get that vibe from him at times okay um sorry i was just like using that to mention it to troy um about the officer what about their agenda elliot's agenda so there's three listed here and of course the first one about pushing the limit taking a chance taking risks um that's the personal agenda okay they're reckless and they like to take risks try new things yeah great uh is there anything uh that has to do with this particular mission at all or you're just at the time at the moment you're just like whatever you need me to do pushing it taking the risks i mean with this particular mission this debris field seems like they're jam i can't wait to get into it yeah awesome uh buddy is hank yeah all right and rival do you have a rival so since you said maybe the officer you said the first to me a little bit sometimes no i said defers to troy the first detroit yeah so i maybe troy is my arrival of it like i see that and i'm like i'm not even supposed to be here both of you are happy as your rival how dare you yeah that's true so far uh not too surprising uh all right let's go to skids give what do you got uh name so yeah so as troy pointed out like his character might have been inspired loosely by oscar isaac has no relationship to oscar isaac whatsoever my character was loosely inspired by sean connery in the movie outland no legal real uh uh any way close to that person living or dead um but his name is uh john connolly john connolly okay it's john cornell is a colonial marshal oh my god [Music] why are you doing this to me john connolly and i don't mean me as a gm i mean me as the guy who has to do all the legal paperwork for this company that's no resemblance whatsoever to anyone living or dead i want to make that totally clear uh i'm so scared to ask this what does he look like well he's uh short of resemblance to um you can all picture him okay all right no he's at six foot two he's got like greying hair he's got a beard like a you know a paper beard uh he smokes a lot he's got like this worn cap from this uh mining station on io that like a normal like rough neck would have uh these looks like he's had for years he's got like a cool jacket and uh coveralls okay very cool yeah i read in the core rulebook so it's like they just wear coveralls okay because right it's the best thing to wear it's the most practical thing to wear in these situations so coveralls uh and what about his his uh disposition his personality what did people what kind of vibe do they get from him i think he's i don't know i'm trying to figure it out i think he's i think he's an observer i think he's just someone who tries to calmly rationally kind of evaluate any situations as they come uh i think he's a little irratible i think he's prone to like ptsd episodes i think he has nightmares from stuff he's seen yeah if he's been through okay um uh maybe we could detail that later uh you know another episode some of some of the stuff he's been through yeah um what is his agenda would you say i had two ideas so one in the book one of them that i was looking at is like you just want to put down the badge and like start a new life which i was thinking about but then you've mentioned like what this scenario was about and maybe the the crime the drugs thing maybe that's why he's here hmm it's like he's here to investigate this particular for this right that's right yeah oh yes he's yeah undercover dea yeah yeah you want to say ea yeah it's so funny because it's really it's so close to the plot of outland so this is very funny but yes okay there's going to be some pcopc death that's for sure that's right uh all right who is your buddy do you have a buddy i think my buddy is troy's character okay yeah he's buddying up to him because he wants to get that inside information right he's working him he's probably my room like he's probably whether he knows i don't think he knows what i actually am but i think he's my end to getting on to this flight onto this mission so i think i met him before i met anyone else okay and i think my rival is dizzy okay because i hate space travel i think i think they're i think they're reckless okay they generalize me shut up don't even know me i like how there's kind of like a split in the party yeah yeah fractions yeah it's covered together dude alien schism alien seven seven schism exterior shot the bird period it's uncurry or new i can see it right now the screenplay is being printed right now behind me on my laserjet all right let's round it out with this company agent troy do we have a name this [ย __ย ] guy i wrote this name down it was the first thing that came to my head after i felt fully committed to company agent and i kept looking at it over the past like hour thinking if i come off anything better and i just i like it uh his name is carter malloway oh carter malloway wow it sounds exactly like another name on our network carthage well i don't know i was looking at carter malowus and raiders carter mallowett carter's such a perfect [ย __ย ] company agent name it's also the name of the company agent in aliens it is it is carter burke is he carter burke okay yeah burke carter j signed burke carter j you set them out there you didn't warn them yeah carter malloway okay carter malloway uh and what does he look like uh pristine buttoned up uh it looks like he has uh only the best duds always has a uh tie on uh button-down collar uh but with like a cool jacket he doesn't wear a suit jacket he wears like a cool uh bomber jacket over it uh his hair is always just so hobnob with the roughnecks yeah he looks yeah he's he just he looks a little too cool for school uh okay cool it looks like oscar isaac would look yeah goddammit uh what about height is he of a similar height to uh okay i forgot to ask um elliot about how tall are they uh a little shorter than that okay so five five ish five nine ish yeah four five ten and three quarters yeah i mean like five ten and three quarters uh what about a personality for carter what's his vibe what's his disposition uh i would say he's a little he's mad ambrosia so we have a mutual friend that is like when you meet him you're like i don't like that guy i never won this guy if that guy's hanging out i don't ever want to hang out again but after about four or five times you're like that is my favorite guy i've ever met yes i 100 get it i have one of those too it's like a charisma that is too much at first yeah but then you grow to like it like you just fall in love with a guy right with time like combos snacks first you eat a combo i was like that was disgusting and then four bags later you're like i need to i need to stop eating that's the most delicious snack i've ever had i never went damaged dehydration oh god oh so far my notes under personality for carter balloway are mad ambrosia off-putting parentheses early stages pizza flavored combos stage one ambrosia okay okay what about agenda oh man this is probably pretty clear yeah all right so i i went with uh i'm gonna do a prop a public agenda and a hidden agenda i think his public agenda is pretty clear this is a great career opportunity for him and uh he knew that going in but hearing fels drop that info from mother now he's putting the pieces together and he's like i knew this was the uh the ship to get on uh if if we can make this happen if we get this cargo i'm gonna be just just fine when i get back i'd say his private agenda is uh the company may have intimated to him and now i'm i'm stretching here and joe you got to decide what you want to do with it that like you mentioned this already that a crew that size just disappearing is strange and so i'm here to find out what happened to that crew okay so beyond just the retrieval of the cargo which could simply be put onto any dumb roughnecks you have hired uh your next level job from the company is to get the answers of what happened on that ship report it back to management while also prioritizing getting the cargo over anything else yes um okay here to find out what happened to that crew who's your buddy fels fells yeah sorry who's fells isn't false the captain uh is fellas the captain uh john's sorry johns johnson who the you're a life of living hell so i made john's my buddy and flynn my rival oh you're the worst i feel like flynn hasn't been brought into the stories no no yeah flynn is yeah young ish uh 23 years old sort of unassuming uh medic who's been brought along because he's just out of medical school and uh is is here to help out um a recent hire and uh why would he be your rival i don't like him i'm the young hot shot on this ship not you flynn i look like a young hot shot on this ship not you flynn you may be uh you may have done well at medical school i'm going all the way to the top okay all right um let's start getting into it then uh at that point uh he breaks up the team and everybody goes off uh to do their thing one of the primary things that we know is immediate is that elliott is going to have to get behind the stick of this uh starship and make sure to navigate it deftly through this uh this debris field here but there's other things that could be going on what does everybody else think they're doing in the moments that you leave this table i think uh you could tell me if it's different kate but i think elliott's job is pretty clear and where they're going is pretty clear let me know if you think something else you want to do something for oh [ย __ย ] i complete i'm jumping ahead i forgot about uh signature item everybody gets one signature item can we go through that real quick they're suggested under career and this is important because it helps you relieve stress it also helps to build a little bit of backstory is there one item one thing that you carry with you that keeps you connected to your reality at home after so much time you know traveling faster than light through the stars yes uh okay then go ahead there elliott um i'm imagining they have like a dashboard buddy so i'm picturing them like going to the pilot seat and just kind of getting everything ready like oh putting it putting the seat up or down or back and get just in the mirrors and putting the dashboard in yours just in the mirrors i mean i mean he is just too close he is just too close celestial objects and mirror may be closer than they appear and i can't think of what it is i don't want it to be just like a hula uh girl it's okay you can you can give it to me later but it's a dashboard item it's like a dashboard trinket yeah okay that's fine uh you can come up with the detail later uh how about you grant you got a signature item yeah i think he it's like a lucky charm that's reached totemic uh kind of levels of importance to hank and uh it's his he's since surpassed it in terms of rating but it's his class two loader license just like helen ripley had oh yeah she needed something to do yeah there is one of those on the ship by the way because you're a salvage team there is one of those on the ship so that is terrific uh all right and then we've got sorry skid with signature item uh it is a little voodoo doll of elliott no i think it's uh it's i think it's actually like as like a titanium cigarette case with this the symbol on it and a big dent in it and uh i think it act like he carries his cigarettes in there and it actually stopped a bullet at one point and that's why he like holds on to it okay cigarette case bullet dented yeah uh all right awesome and then what about troy a signature item uh i'm sorry carter carter malloway yeah what does this completely feelingless a-hole uh have on him that uh helps him relieve stress uh his business card are you serious wow how would that relieve stress for you alien cards with their their plastic and you plug them into a thing and they call them really nice yeah and it's kind of like american psycho like his is made on only the best and just just feeling it makes him feel like he's he's already risen through the ranks he used to have a shittier card but he's been promoted pretty quickly um you know who doesn't have a business card flynn it'll make business cards for doctors that's so true that i keep mine right in my breast pocket that's great that's great okay what are what are the rest of you doing uh as you break off of this uh of this meal and it's time to start you know suiting up for salvage what is your routine what do you do i think i think john is going down like he's thinking about what he has to do like he's thinking about the mission that he's on but he's down in the heavy equipment bay checking his any heavy equipment that he thinks he's going to be using on this like he's just going over it and over being like super careful i think that's one of his things is like he takes no chances like he just goes he dots it every eye crosses every t when there's any risk involved okay uh go ahead and give me a a roll there then give me an observation roll observation or you could do heavy machinery you know if you're just sort of like checking the status of the equipment i'll do observation uh two successes two successes fantastic do i get a stunt yeah look up the stunt for observation this may take several hours all right don't worry about it then uh i will tell you with your observation the one thing that jumps out to you pretty early uh is that the uh cutting torch that you primarily use in this situation uh has a minor malfunction which if you did not catch that uh would have created a fire immediately at its first use so that was a good catch as you were going over the details so go ahead and roll a heavy machinery roll to repair that if you don't repair it then you're going to have a lot of trouble if you need to do some heavy cutting okay you could also get you know the aid of grant's character two if you'd like that's an option uh i do not get it uh so i do i call i call hank over and would you give me a hand with this this this torch's bloody torch can never get it to work he points out and says you need to be using a socket wrench brother i don't know why you're using that spanner like that let me take a look and uh does he just do a roll yeah just do a role on hashing machinery yeah right i love it i love it there's a lot of dice he's counting up all of his successes two successes okay two successes all right great job you so you fixed the cutting torch uh so you've got that uh at your disposal what is uh troy what are you doing um you use comm tech now i i can't imagine i have access to mother that would just be the officer right um it would be the officer and the medic in some situations no you don't have direct access to mother okay what i'd like to do then is just kind of you know find a quiet place to log into computers and just see if i'm able to find any other information that maybe the captain didn't speak about in his briefing okay uh so go ahead and give me a comm tech role you can go into the terminal click clock clock see if there's anything that you can draw up okay seven dice for me uh and i got two sixes two sixes so yeah stun but definite success fantastic all over the place anything he may be put in his log that he didn't tell us uh yeah so you look through it and um you see that his log has a little bit more details about uh b54c uh the uh planetoid here um lvb54 uh see that or b that was um uh that is this uh debris field uh he sort of just used the the parlance glass around the table you can sort of think of that to mean destroyed but you're able to dig into it a little bit deeper you see not only in his notes but what you can find in the the company's sort of record here about the details of this mission that they gave to the officer and not to everyone else is that [Music] that this planetoid had a xenomorph infestation which triggered a nuclear uh destruction from orbit that was uh that had to happen um it's the only way to be sure and so they nuked it but the colonial marines that were responsible for the strike uh overdid the payload and they obliterated the planetoid and it left it in shambles and uh has created a some gravitational uh anomalies within the star system that has been really problematic and so some of the other facilities around here that companies are working on were abandoned because of the risk of you know it could be years down the line but there was risk that this one major change within the system could domino effect uh create issues with other uh with other bodies uh that people might have been having mining operations on or et cetera so it really was an enormous mistake that uh sort of created a deep financial error uh that has been a problem for a lot of companies so a lot of people as people are pulling out you see a motto is like coming in and using the sort of flee the the space where people have fleed to do something that is hard to track because it's also hard to get those signals through the debris field and this would be the perfect place for a totally illicit operation um interesting do you have any knowledge or experience uh with the xenomorph i mean i'm sure you do not have like one-on-one personal experience with this anymore i've been briefed on it i'm sure it's been part of my training like you have to be aware of these things the book space beast or something like there was a book about what happened on lv 426 that was kind of spread around widely spread does that happen on the timeline i feel like that might happen after 2183 but yeah it's yeah i i can't remember when it happens oh no maybe not uh space beast went around because i read that in the timeline yeah no it would be before 2183 so yeah other people are aware of it as well i would say him working for the company he probably has had private uh confidential briefings about it yeah like it was quickly the book was quickly banned but it probably a lot of the rumors like are probably all over the place yeah 2180 to the present day uh it has been transmitted throughout the colonies and then banned yeah interesting um okay and then uh let's start getting into it so all of a sudden you hear uh the blaring sound of a warning bro and some of the yellow lights start going off and uh it is a brace for impact signal that you guys are familiar with uh there is uh we're getting danger close to some debris here uh and it is not an imminent uh threat but the pilot is going to have to uh make a few adjustments uh to get us out of this nothing too crazy need a success but the pressure of the situation is going to require minus one die to the roll i'm afraid as you see multiple objects are kind of moving in different directions all at the same time you think you know the one that is uh that the computer is picking up but you want to make sure that you don't move into the path of another one so it's a little bit of a different difficult move go ahead and give me a piloting check with a minus one to the roll minus one dice i just yep you just you just leave one of the base dice out ellie you got this hank calls he's like he's like leaning over to skid skaters like this this kid is good you got to see this not quite as good as they think they are i think all right one success beautiful you navigate uh around this thing within a few you guys are all like kind of holding on for impact and it it it goes down you guys are all good uh and you're able to get a little bit closer at that point uh the captain uh the officer johns uh comes in to you uh elliot as you're flying uh and is like all right slow it down get in there but but not too close mother's reading some some strange readings um uh nothing nothing anomalistic but it looks like there's there's uh scorch marks around the outside of the vessel um this is not some sort of uh internal breakdown here that this ship was attacked it seems uh there's there's fire fight here and there might be other ships in the area um i'm going to go ahead and roll on your computer uh to see if there is any uh pickup of any other ships in the area because the evidence that is coming off of the this large ship that is apparently inert and not responding to hails uh seems to have been attacked because there is hull damage on the outside that mother has picked up and there is no warning of any other ships in the area uh it seems to be quiet so you should be okay uh but you still pull in a little bit closer and uh mother does a few readings and the the officer johns informs you that there's no uh life signs uh on board uh and this is a this is a really big ship so as you're pulling up to it you can just see uh the size of it and he uh decides that it's it's time to uh to get on so uh he asks you to pilot the ship very carefully uh up to one of the docking bays knowing that the docking bay itself is not gonna open for you but just just get close to it and then you're gonna have to do a manual uh opening of the docking bay uh so go ahead and get super close there pilot and i i can put back in that one dice i took away yes yeah yep this is a regular challenge keeping you busy still just one success okay that's great you pull in there nicely ease the ship up to the hall of this massive what did you call it skid what is it base hulk yeah this space hulk and so you you kind of pull your g-class freighter up to it and you're just like it's just like a wall of steel like almost as far as you as you can see in either direction uh but there is a docking bay and uh that is when the officer informs uh hank and uh sorry skid who are you are uh [ย __ย ] john john yeah hank and john uh that they need you uh for a spacewalk to trigger a manual opening of the docking bay doors uh in order to connect the ship so you have company issued uh uh pressure suits which are not great but they're good they're decent quality uh and you guys strap those on uh and he orders you to get out and uh make this happen you're very close to the docking bay oh roughneck john connolly oh rough neck chad cuddly i'm just a rough neck like any other right jobs for 50 microns oh you're it's just another here at the office elliot heard that i think i'm gonna start talking like you two slowly over time i have a i have an infectious personality i got other infectious things too but we'll talk about that later [Laughter] okay uh all right so um what do you guys do i i'm going to follow hank's lead uh yeah hank uh kind of kicks off reluctantly his ostrich cowboy boots to be able to fit into the pressure suit and kind of clamps it all down and as he does he starts like you hear like um acoustic kind of steel guitar country music piping in through the speakers of his of his suit and he's like down but down down down down [Laughter] he opens up the the the cover of his spacesuit and it's like [ย __ย ] i forgot about this and he throws the cigar out and stomps on it before he gets ready and he approaches the airlock and he says you coming john yeah and he just john makes double sure that the cigar is put out like he grinds it grinds and grinds it grinds it and he buttons up and gives a thumbs up ready when you are cowboy all right let's do this [Music] you open up the airlock and carter's at the window and he takes his aviators off you guys are now space walking in zero g you are uh attached to the ship uh with heavy lines uh and your two bodies start floating this short distance maybe you know 30 meters or so uh as you just like drift in open space between these two vessels one small one rather large and you it comes closer and closer and you have these headlights it's just pitch black space your headlights on your uh pressure suits pressure suits start to light it up and as you look to the left and look to the right you can see some of the scoring and damage of what looked like some sort of fire fight uh on this vessel you get closer and just bump up against it there's some handrails and you see like a giant two six like on the on the uh the side of the uh the side of the doors and uh you would know as uh as um roughnecks that you're gonna try to uh use the outer um uh the outer computer system to manually override the docking bay doors so uh do either of you have com tech skills at all i do uh do you john uh i don't know i don't better i have a a total of five die in comptech i probably had a use all sorts of interfaces like this over the years even though i had no formal training i i got good at it over time um so here it comes come on give me that burger luck uh four four four four uh all fours in a two so no no success so no no successes uh okay so you start working uh on the system to do the manual override uh with your skill the way it is you know that this should be pretty easy but there's you hit the button and it won't open you're just like what the heck and so you try to do a comm tech style uh override on it and you're successful the these huge doors start opening up but at the time that they do you short the uh the door the manual override door as part of the process and even though the doors are opening up it bursts into your face and part of your the glove of your pressure suit catches fire up the side of your right arm and you are knocked off of the side of the ship in the in the havoc for a second you just start floating into free space give yourself one stress and i need you to roll a stamina roll i'll just point out that fire needs oxygen to burn and we're in the vacuum of space i know i know i know i know it's just it's just a little stress so what i just need to roll what i'm rolling sorry stamina because you're like like in your helmet you want to get it under control i'm pretty good at but i gave myself just a one in that so this is six dice uh one success one success okay so you get your breathing under control very quickly the fire just vanishes uh off of your arm and should i start at a stress die as well to that uh yes yes so go ahead and roll that real quick no no same just the same still roll the one yeah and you didn't roll one right no i rolled a four on it okay great uh so you still hold that stress that stress carries over but you start floating back toward the ship and you're okay you you get your breathing under control and you have now opened the docking bay doors you just sort of drift out into space but eventually your line goes taut and it pulls you back up to the ship you you get pulled back uh again with john uh and you guys are able to re-enter the ship and now i need kate to park that thing so you got a huge docking bay has opened your uh away team is now back on board and you just need to ease this thing into the docking bay and get it get it settled okay two successes yeah you ease the ship slowly your tv is odd try you ease the ship wait how the hell did that happen oh no i just touched my failed contact role instead of opening the door you turned on troy's tv that's crazy terrifying you pull uh into this bay and just easily your ship fits in and you don't hit any of the outer uh walls of this bay you park it beautifully and you're sliding in you're using the flood lights on the bird period and they are combing inside of this cargo hold and as you pull up you see that this uh the opening of the the docking bay doors should have created a a um depressurization uh of this area that sort of sucked everything out but when the doors opened as you pull in you see that there is debris floating within the cargo bay you see a fine yellow haze in the air it's a mist to it that is very disturbing and very unusual has no business being here and through the mist and crossing through your floodlights are the bodies of multiple overall crew members frozen dead and passing through the lights and we'll see you next time [Music] good night everybody thank you guys for watching was awesome [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
