New DLC, New Save File! | The Binding of Isaac: Repentance - Ep. 1

hey guys wells knight here and welcome to the binding of isaac repentance this is the latest dlc to one of my all-time favorite games and i am super hyped that it's finally here now because this is the first time i'm playing isaac on this channel there's probably a good number of you who've never heard of or watched this game so i have a number of things to talk about in this first episode before we dive in i'm gonna do my best over the course of this series to sort of introduce and explain this game to people who are new to it but i still want it to be engaging for isaac veterans like myself uh as well so if you're already familiar with the binding of isaac and you know all about it and what it is uh feel free to skip ahead to the next chapter or to the time stamp i will put on screen right now so what is the binding of isaac well it is a roguelike heavily inspired by the old school legend of zelda games with a massive amount of content and items and enemies and stuff to ex find and unlockables and just like ridiculous amounts of stuff in it um one thing i want to be extremely clear about this game is borderline at best when it comes to being family friendly which is why when i did over 450 episodes of isaac in the past i put it on my second channel however the second channel is dead so i'm putting it here instead um i don't think this game is outright do not let your kids watch this under any circumstances but it definitely has some dark themes and symbology uh regarding topics like depression organized religion divorce all sorts of stuff like that uh it does have an esrb rating of m for mature although i will say that after playing hundreds and hundreds of hours of it i personally disagree with that rating and i think it should be rated t for teen since everything is in sort of a cartoony pixelated art style and i'm going to be skipping basically all the cutscenes so a lot of the really dark stuff won't be shown here but still viewer discretion is advised if you're a kid check with your parents and if you're a parent watch an episode and decide for yourself what's best speaking of the art style it took me a really long time to get into isaac originally and to give it a chance because i was turned off by the art style and a lot of the visual aspects of the game there's a lot of disgusting enemies and items poop jokes uh stuff like that etc but that's not really normally my cup of tea um but when i did finally get into isaac when i finally sort of embraced the absurdity of it all i was kicking myself for not giving it a chance sooner because if you can get past that the game is incredibly varied and often downright insane in the best kind of way there's there's a really big learning curve due to the sheer number of different items within the game and i will do my best to edit a pop-up into the video to explain what all the different items do sort of as we encounter them um so yeah all those disclaimers and disclosures out of the way without further ado let's dive into the new dlc and to do that we're going to be starting a brand new save file goodbye file three let's do it let's go into our options couple things we want to customize here we're good with the sound effects and music uh but what i really want to make sure is the hud is on uh and we want the mini hud this is a new feature uh it will allow us to see more things on screen okay i think that's good uh let's do it we'll just start a new run and we're gonna play on hard mode because um that's how we do i've got hundreds of hours in this game i think i will be okay oh this looks a little different actually this looks a lot different than uh after birth plus the hud is colored now and it appears darker do we have a curse of darkness no we don't it's just a little bit darker in general okay let's see what we can sort of this also these uh these little dudes look a little different they've gotten a little bit of a graphical overhaul this is like the amount of changes made in afterbirth oh it's a mimic chest that's new okay um pills are also supposed to be better now but we're gonna see i don't know we're gonna try also what are these green flies hundreds of hours and i'm still learning new things um but this is i mean literally repentance went live on steam literally i don't know two minutes before i recorded this before i started recording this video so it's a whole new world of isaac okay so we got chemical peel um this is a damage upgrade that works on every other shot i forget the exact amount of the damage upgrade but uh it's fine it is ultimately a damage upgrade and this is new as well this door icon i think this is is this just the shop yeah this is the shop now okay cool um those have been made free on the first floor normally you would need a key to get into them that's also a new attack for those guys oh and a new sound effect okay there's here's the thing i've played so many hours of isaac that any like new thing that we come across ooh tinted rock come here we're gonna blow this up tinted rocks when you blow them up they can give you chests but they can also give you um health and all sorts of good stuff so all right we got 14 cents uh i don't think we can buy anything in the shop just yet yeah i mean i could buy a bomb but that's kind of a waste um let's see secret room could be down here um on every floor there are two secret rooms which i will which i usually refer to as the secret room and the second secret room i think the official name is the super secret room or something like that but just out of habit i will call it the secret room and the suit and the the second secret room uh and they have very specific rules regarding where they can generate so the regular secret room uh will always generate adjacent to at least two rooms uh bob's rotten head that's an explosive we can throw it at enemies and it will blow up and we got the moon card so the the main secret room will always touch at least two rooms and you can see if we look at the map um and it will not have anything in front of the wall so like for example i think the main secret the first secret room is right down here yep and we know it's there because there's nothing blocking it and if we look over here there won't be anything on that wall either the door would be like right here where i'm standing right now um and then if we look in the treasure room it's going to be the same thing so uh eventually when you play enough isaac you'll just kind of get a sense of like where everything goes like you'll you'll recognize certain rooms and you'll be like okay there's probably a secret room right here um but when you're first starting out the rules are it the main secret room must be touching at least one other at least two rooms often more and uh it won't have anything in front of it the second secret room is a little bit trickier it will only be touching one room and it's usually the room closest to the boss or fairly close to the boss but not always so it could be over here or it could be over here but we don't have the um we don't have more bombs to look for it anyway and usually unless i'm pretty sure of where it's going to be i don't bother with the second secret room like we can make an educated guess right now but uh oh careful i i think this is new art too i think these guys got a little bit of a visual overhaul which i'm uh pretty happy with let's see there we go all right so we got an hp upgrade dessert and we will head down to the next floor we have to get through six floors initially as you uh sort of progress through the game and defeat the bosses and stuff like that you will unlock more and more content but when we're first starting out since it's a brand new save file we've only got to get through six floors uh initially also they changed this where i can pop in here it used to be uh leave me alone please it used to be that taking uh red heart damage from uh the cursed rooms these rooms with the spiky doors um used to prevent you from being able to get a deal oh this is new too self-sacrifice room that's a new uh aesthetic to it as well i like it uh anyway but yeah it used to be that uh taking damage from cursed room oh that's unfortunate well we just ruined our our deal with the devil chance uh that's okay um so at the end of floors uh except for the very first floor when you defeat the boss you will have a chance to get a deal with the devil or a deal with the angel which will allow you to get certain super powerful items usually and that chance is dependent on you not taking red heart damage over the course of the floor before you beat the boss well i just took red heart damage in that last rune so our uh our deal chance has been significantly reduced if you look on the left side of the screen you see a little icon that says it looks kind of like a demon head looking thing and then it says 36 percent that means that that's my chance of getting a deal at the end of the floor uh and it used to be a hundred percent but now it's only 36 because we took damage which is fine it happens i'm not super worried about this run usually uh the early game here should be pretty fine i mean like this is this is this is isaac at at the start it doesn't get hard for a while in theory at least we'll see all right let's check the treasure room oh we got anti-gravity tears uh i actually like this item a lot um what it does is it gives you uh at least hmm is that rate of is that the new icon for rate of fire the 3.73 it might be i think they changed the way that that's displayed but anyway uh it basically makes your tears stay on the ground like this it slightly increases your rate of fire and then you can shoot a whole bunch of your uh your shots or your tears at once there we go so i will gladly take this item we got a bomb uh i want to make sure we're able to get into the item room on the next floor so i'm gonna blow that up to get the key instead and then we will go fight you i'll hit you with the bob's rotten head blow you up there we go we got a new item this looks like a stapler damage upgrade okay damage upgrades are good and then we have here a deal with the devil um and it's book of belial which if you use it in a room will give you a damage upgrade uh that lasts for that room uh however if we take this it also means that we are guaranteed to get deal with the devil chances for the remainder of the run and deals with the devil are at least in theory better so i think we'll do it let's go check the shop let's see if there's anything of use in the shop okay um there is i'm actually gonna do this this tinted rock you can see how it's a slightly different color and has an x on it for x marks the spot this thing has a chance to drop spirit hearts like that that's a spirit heart um and then the item there is spider mod it shows enemies hp remaining it's okay i don't think it's a great item but it's not a bad item it just kind of it exists although i don't know maybe it was changed in repentance i'm not sure anyway moving on let's see so the run is doing what is that is a new it's a new enemy i've never seen this enemy before oh okay um [Laughter] everything is new please die there we go okay uh yeah so repentance was based uh very heavily on a mod that was i'm gonna get stuck there i stop yo can you stop it it's just terrible terrible there we go okay it's fine it was uh based heavily on a mod for the binding of isaac rebirth or i think it was original after birth not after birth plus um called anti-birth that was insanely good and that uh edmund mcmillan the creator of the binding of isaac basically saw and went this mod is amazing let's add it into the actual game uh so they did however it's also got a ton of extra stuff on top of that too and i played a lot of ant of um afterbirth plus but i never played anti-birth at all so the mod i never touched the mod i watched some videos of it from various other creators uh northern lion etc but i never played it myself so i kind of know a little bit about it but not a lot so a lot of this stuff even the stuff that's from anti-birth itself is gonna be new is that a new tinted rock i think this is a tinted rock i see what appears to be an axe i think that's a new icon for tinted rocks on this floor that used to be a blue rock much like the last one there we go the run is like we're okay it's not amazing but yeah it was definitely health down see here's the thing edmund told me that pills are going to be better he well he didn't tell like me personally i've never spoken to the man but he told the world he's like he'll all take pills now they're supposed to be better yeah uh edmund you just gave me a health down pill is my very first maybe my second pill i don't know either way it's not i think edmund lied to me i'm never taking pills again no not really um we go i would very much like a key please that's a bomb there we go um we can't get into the shop at the moment um this could be a secret room maybe yep okay and there's the key we need so i could get into the shop but i'm more worried honestly about getting into the item room don't touch that golden chest we have better things to spend our key on like getting into the item room right here okay so bob's curse gives us five bombs and makes our bombs have uh a poison damage effect which just like it's okay here we go what's this empress card eh okay what do you do one makes you larger ed it's not a good pill either makes it harder to dodge okay we got one room left on this floor and we can't um i mean we could but i'm a little nervous about throwing away that hp there's no hp on the floor at all right no not really okay well i guess what we'll do well you know what we can check here for a secret room this could be a secret room up here and we're gonna get our bomb back anyway and that's an eternal heart which will turn into a full heart container when we leave the floor if we keep it intact and don't take damage so i think that is worth holding on to well not holding on to per se but like leaving there so that i can come back after the boss fight and go get it this is also a new uh appearance for this particular boss there we go got a speed upgrade 48 hour energy oh i totally forgot to use bookable isle i just realized that's fine all right so here's the plan what we're gonna do since there's hp now in the boss room i'm gonna quickly run back to this room we're just going to grab the nickel and then leave although i suppose i could have used the moon card to which teleports us to i believe the secret room off the top of my head but that's fine all right pop up in here grab the eternal heart and now we are on to the next floor we'll pick this up down we go since we didn't take damage uh after picking up the eternal heart we now should have three heart containers yes good okay there we go we are a little lacking in the hp department though i must say are we making progress yeah we're making progress there's a new color oh don't get hit by that guy i'm not sure what this like dark green guy looks like i'm not sure what this guy does what do you do you explode okay so he explodes upon death that's what he does got it totally makes sense oh that's a new sound effect okay uh i would very much like to get into the item room but we have no keys let's pop into here okay meh not really worth it got some blue flies which will just deal damage to enemies it's not amazing all right sun card some card's all right let's use that here it deals damage to all enemies in the room and it shows us the map which is pretty useful also gave us a key so i think what we're gonna do is blow these guys up oh here excuse me he he fires back can he actually be hurt that way maybe not that's interesting that's new you used to be able to blow those guys up too i was really hoping to get keys though um which did not happen uh let's pop into here oh that's is that mama mega yeah it's a new icon okay we're gonna use that that will essentially blow up every room as you can see okay and we're basically just looking for another key like that beautiful all right now we can go back to the item room to get the item we need oh it also retroactively blows up old rooms too nice okay so we know that this is our secret room now and that's pyro which would give me 99 bombs but uh i can't actually get to it because i don't have the ability to fly at the moment and uh there's nothing else that gets me close to it so oh well pisces is a slight tears upgrade or rate of fire increase so to speak or rate of fire deep decrease i guess it makes our rate of fire better and then it also makes our shots cause knockback which is like it's okay either way moving on [Music] anything good over here lots of pills shot speed down power pill amnesia so so far we have gotten no good pills um edmund after your promise to everyone that pills were going to be better this is a new room i'm happy to have the keys though because we have been a little lacking in the key department let's go fight you mama mega will deal a ton of damage right off the bat i should not have taken damage there did we get him we got him there we go ruined our deal chance again though we just really need red hearts like we're not red hearts we really need hearts that aren't red hearts uh so that we can actually like protect our red heart uh containers so that we can not ruin our deal chances uh we got some money though one thing that you want to do to unlock new stuff is you want to donate money to the donation machine so i'm going to start making some donations and eventually the machine will jam and then you can't donate anything else for the remainder of the run so one thing we want to be trying to do as we sort of do runs here to begin with is make sure that we're donating as much as we possibly can to the donation machine uh each run so that we can get those things unlocked as quickly as possible there's a lot of different unlocks that are all sort of tied behind the donation machine i'm gonna open that was probably really loud a can of soda because i'm thirsty ah delicious refreshing stuff this is a okay careful okay there we go and then this fire those red fires can damage you yes there goes the deal again we're not man not our run as far as hp goes now we'll just sit here there we go he's dead okay i found our item room we found enemies that are doing things that i'm not a fan of stop jumping at me please jump into that instead there we go what do we got the d7 um it re-rolls stuff i forget what exactly it rerolls but the book of belial is better i'll edit it into the video also i should probably mention when it comes to the little tool tips that are popping up whenever we pick up an item that's me editing the video like that's a card that i'm making in photoshop and then manually editing into the video and since uh since repentance literally just came out we're not a hundred percent certain that all of the information on that is completely accurate because we don't know what all the items do and stuff like that so if there are any if you're watching like in the future and any of those items are like oh that's wrong yeah by the time you you know it's wrong i'll probably know it's wrong too but like i'm i'm making my best guess because at this point at the time of recording repentance has been out for approximately like 20 minutes so oh uh mom's box gives trinkets faded polaroid hold on i need to check something because i know that there is um you unlock a character using this but it's been a long time since i've done it so i forget exactly how you're supposed to um or maybe not maybe it's not the faded polaroid i don't think it is the faded polaroid never mind either way we will roll with mom's box because trinkets are sometimes really good yo can you stop with the that dude needs to chill all right let's get rid of little brain dudes or whatever these are i don't think i really want to know what they are it doesn't matter there's a key we've already found our item room and we've been to the shop so at this point it's just a matter of going to the boss now i think maybe the best bet here is just to keep moving i hate this this this is like my new least favorite room leave me alone you got teleporting enemies all i mean they're not literally teleporting but they're jumping around like crazy we might actually die here please die what's left this one dude over here i will not be slain by one guy what is this jawbreaker don't chew on it that's a new trinket that i have never seen before so i have no idea what it does it's so much faster careful at [Music] well first run ended in failure but uh you know that's how it goes it's fine we will continue in the future we got destroyed by spike traps anyway guys i think i'm gonna call
