it has been a hundred days since rioters invaded the capitol building overwhelming police and other security forces a moment that exposed the fragility of the people's house well today the grounds are heavily fortified and congress is still trying to understand what went wrong nbc news political reporter von hillier joins us now from the capitol savon a hundred days later what does security look like now at the capitol yeah good morning joe we should just note here 100 days out that you can see this line of fencing that still exists a perimeter has been built up essentially fortifying this capital complex a nine foot fence you still have thousands of national guard on hand and you'll recall the national guard was not deployed until the sun was coming down several hours after the insurrection began here the invasion of the u.s capitol you know we're right here if john bullard our photographer is going to show you where pennsylvania avenue is and you'll to go back to january 6th it was thousands of folks after the president spoke they came down here pennsylvania avenue and this lawn here though it's west front lawn outside the capitol is where i stood that day and watched as thousands of folks stood here on this lawn you can see it's no longer accessible folks can't just go up to this area like they were able to 100 days ago john we should also note that the capitol police inspector general michael bolton testified before a house committee yesterday about what happened on january 6. what did he say exactly there's actually six congressional committees that are still reviewing what happened 100 days ago but then also this ig from the capitol police appearing before one of those house committees yesterday and testifying the extent to which there were deficiencies in training deficiencies and ammunition deficiencies and intelligence for the capital police force i want to let you hear one of the exchanges between ig bolton and congressman butterfield yesterday mr bolton let me get your answer in the record on this did training deficiencies contribute to the department's inability to carry out its mission on that fateful day i believe yes training deficiencies put officers our brave men and women in a position not to succeed joe it was a tough indictment from ig bolton there who said not only in terms of training deficiencies but also said that the officers here they did not have initially the proper ammunition and once it came into their hands it was not deployed in essentially what you saw were those thousands of folks outmanned the capitol police force here on january 6. von hilyard outside the capital bond thank you so much hey nbc news viewers thanks for checking out our youtube channel subscribe by clicking on that button down here and click on any of the videos over here to watch the latest interviews show highlights and digital exclusives thanks for watching
