[Music] [Music] good evening welcome once again to Newcastle after dark we are your hosts the management coming to you from the land of telephone pool Christmas reath and plastic blow mold nativity sets bringing you films that are Feast for the Mind tonight's film is one of our favorites 1984's A Christmas Carol starring George C Scott and David Warner and uh Angela Pleasants and Edward Woodward he was in the Wicker man the Wicker man that's right that's right yeah there is a lot of famous faces in this movie well Angela Pleasants that's uh Donald Pleasants daughter you can kind of see the resemblance yeah a little bit a little bit but you know this film is our favorite version of A Christmas Carol it is the most genuine to the book I believe yeah and you know George C Scott is so sincere he's he's just awesome well you know and George Scott's been in so many great films he's one of my all-time favorite actors absolutely uh you know Patton uh the changeling oh The Exorcist 3 I mean no matter what George C Scott's in uh it's always a great performance yes that is true yeah that is true and they've done a lot of versions of this yes uh you know brought to film right I think that a lot of people prefer 1951's version with alist Sim and uh Alec Guinness but we don't yeah yeah I mean I certainly prefer this one uh this is a holiday classic of mine I've been watching this uh for years every time Christmas Comes Around yes and you know they don't play it on TV anymore no which no they keep remaking it but this one I I think they all pale in comp comparison to this one I mean even though it's it is a Christmas uh story you know it still has it's a ghost story it still has a ghost story to it yes yeah yes so it's very fitting it is yeah yeah so sit back pour yourself a bowl of smoking Bishop enjoy 1984's A Christmas [Music] Carol [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] old Marley was as dead as a doornail this must be distinctly understood or nothing wonderful can come Uncle I said Merry Christmas Uncle hug Christmas a hug Uncle surely you don't mean that I do what's Christmas but a time for buying things for which you have no need no money time for finding yourself a year older not an hour richer if I could work my will every idiot who goes about with merry Christmas on his lips should be boiled in his own pudding and buried with a steak of Hing through his heart come now uncle NE you you keep Christmas in your way and let me keep it in mine keep it but you don't keep it let me leave it alone then much good it may do you much good it has done you there are a great many things from which I might have derived good from which I have not profited I dare say Christmas among the rest but I've always thought of Christmas time when it comes around as a good time a kindly forgiving charitable time a time when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut up Hearts freely to their fellow creatures and so Uncle L has never put a scrap of gold or silver into my pocket I do believe that it has done me good and I say God bless it not a sound from you and you'll keep your Christmas by losing your situation you're quite a powerful speaker sir I wonder you don't go into parli please don't be angry Uncle come dine with us tomorrow dine I'd see myself in hell for it it would be a great joy to me and to my wife yes your wife I'm told she brought meet my quote plus 5% for the delay that's outrageous Scrooge you'll be left with a warehouse stuff with corn well that's my Affair isn't it but if we pay your price our bread we'll be dearer the poor will suffer buy the corn someplace else good day sir screw your moment we'll take your corn for the price you quoted yesterday too late if you wait until tomorrow it'll cost you another 5 Cent damage Cru is not fair no but it's business I'll give you a moment to make up your minds all right sco done and done very good gentlemen now make sure that the draft for the entire amount of this transaction is deposited with my Clark I don't ship until I have the cash in hand uh Mr Scrooge I presume indeed you do sir you don't know us nor do I wish to my name is pool and this is Mr hacky excellent now if you'll allow me to follow uh let me explain something at this festive season of the year it seems seems desirable that those of us with means should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute who suffer greatly at this time provision are you seeking money from in many thousands are in want of common necessaries hundreds of thousands are in want of common Comforts are there no prisons plenty of Prisons the workhouses they still in operation there are I wish I could say they were not the treadmill and the poor houses still in full Vigor all very busy sir I was afraid from what you said that something had stopped them in full force a few of us are endeavoring to raise a fund to buy the poor some meat and drink and food and warmth what can we put you down for that nothing you wish to be anonymous I wish to be left alone since you ask me what I wish gentlemen that is my answer I don't make marry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people marry my tax has helped to support the public institutions which I have mentioned and they cost enough those who are Bly off must go there many can't go there and many would rather die if they would rather die perhaps they had better do so and uh decrease the Surplus population surely you don't mean that sir with all my heart now if you will go about your business gentleman and allow me to go about [Music] mine [Music] far tip you must be frozen I'm all right now could we go home by cornhill and watch the boys and girls play in the snow of course we can Tim I'm to have the whole day off tomorrow we'll be together the whole family for the entire day H for Christmas the best day of their year his and all his [Music] days look they're having such fun father are you'll be there one day playing with the other children I'm quite sure I will I feel like getting stronger every [Music] day we must go home now your mother will be waiting for us yes it's time to go home here we [Music] [Applause] go [Music] [Laughter] [Music] who's calling me someone call my name [Music] [Music] body [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] right [Music] I'm back [Music] some Mar [Music] believe [Music] what do you want with me much who are you ask me who I was you're particular for a ghost who are you then in life I was your part partner Jacob Marlin can you sit down I can we'll do it [Music] [Music] then you don't believe in me I don't what evidence would you have of My reality beyond that of your own senses I don't know why do you doubt your senses because a little thing affects them a slight disorder of the stomach you might be a bit of bad beef a blot of mustard fragment of an underdone potato there's more of gravy than of grave about you whatever you are hug I tell you hug Mercy Dreadful Apparition why do you trouble me man of the worldly mind do you believe in me or not I do I must but why do spirits walk the earth why do you come to me it is required of every man that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow men and travel far and wide and if that Spirit go not forth in life it is condemned to do so after death it is doomed to wander through the world and witness what it cannot share but might have shared and turn to [Music] happiness you're chained tell me why I wear the chain I forged in life I made it link by link and yard by yard is it pattern strange to you or would you know the weight and length of the strong coil you bear yourself it was as full as heavy and as long as this seven Christmas EES ago you have labored on it since it is a ponderous chain I see no chain nine we invisible until the day of my death as yours shall be jaob tell me more speak Comfort to me I have none to give my spirit never walked beyond our Counting house in life my spirit never roved beyond the narrow limits of our money changing home no doubt of that you you always we a good man of business business mankind was my business the common welfare was my business charity Mercy forbearance and benevolence for all my business the dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my bitterness I'm sorry for you chck is there anything I can do for you For Me Nay it is too late but I have come for your sake ebener have you will you always wear a good friend as part of my Penance I have been sent to warn you and so you have and to offer you a hope and chance of escaping my fate you will be haunted by three Spirits three Spirits is that the CH of hope you mention it is well in that case I I think I'd rather not expect the first tonight when the bell TOS one couldn't they all come at the same time Jacob and have it over expect the second on the stroke of two the Third more Mercurial shall appear in his own good times look to me no more look that you may remember what has passed between [Music] us [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] H something I it well we all know story of Scrooge but in this version I think it's a little bit more realistic I mean as a ghost story goes I think that uh you know you see what a miserly person he really was I mean would we put any coal in the oven no was talking about the Surplus population aren't there workhouses right here are some of those things today well you know and that's funny cuz I think there's more of that that goes on and people that are still much like that today as there was then when Charles Dickens wrote it yeah and they justify it just like Scrooge yeah you know he goes he he goes back to his house and you know it's it's uh you know cobwebs he has five locks on the door yeah and you got an old bowl of mush sitting in the fireplace I've often wondered what that what the soup was that he was eating you know it wasn't Gourmet well you know there's obviously some potato I was like is that ham and potato is that what he's I don't know my man would have Splurge for no ham you know right that ain't no chunky no no that ain't no chunky that's no hungry man that's like the Poor Man versions some gravy and some potato but you know when Jacob Marley you know makes his appearance and he has the uh he has the handkerchief around his around his chin very true to the period also because back then they wouldn't sew your mouth shut when you died they didn't have the technology uh they would tie a handkerchief around your head because otherwise your tongue swells and your jaw Falls open and at a funeral that's pretty horrific so yeah really yeah you know so there's Jacob Marley speaking about his chain that he forged in life and he mentions that Scrooge's chain is a pun you know that part is always spoken to me yeah you know when you when he thinks about you know I forged it link by link yes you know and you know to me that's always made me think well you know out of all the things that we do and you know what is our chain I wonder yeah I wonder I mean it's a good analogy yeah and it does make you wonder you know if you're doing the things that you should right right and now the definition of uh screw it actually is an Old English term which means to squeeze so I mean well he was certainly tight with his money right I mean man I mean look at his house I mean he had a fat house right look at abandoned right well I mean obviously he didn't have a cleaning lady and if he did she should have been fired I mean she wasn't showing up right right but you know at the very end when Marley goes to leave and he opens the window you can hear you don't see them but you can hear hear all the other specters just moaning in the night right it's frightening what a scary yeah you know scene what thought yeah yeah it's uh it's off to a good start it is off to a good start so let's get back to a Christmas [Music] car [Music] [Applause] [Music] one what was it Marley said [Music] [Music] nothing just a dream [Music] it are you the spirit whose coming was foretold to me I am who and what are you I am the Ghost of Christmas Past long past no your past perhaps you would do me the favor of placing upon your head that uh cap that you hold in your hand I bring the light of Truth would you use this cap to put it out I beg your pardon I had no intention of offending but business brings you here it is for your welfare that I appear I can think of No Greater welfare than a night of uninterrupted sleep be careful ebena Scrooge I speak of your Reclamation but if it's Reclamation then let's get on with it [Music] come we shall be invisible and Silent as the grave you will now see a child a youth you will see hopes have merged into a master passion profit the thought of money engrosses you perhaps I'd become wiser but I'd not change towards you our contract is an old one it was made when we were young and our prospects limited how often I've thought of those times if there had been no understanding between us would you seek me out and try to win me now a doless girl with nothing but myself to bring to it'll turn out all right look how there supp for him your what did you say nothing it's um nothing somehow he gets thought for sitting by himself so much he thinks the strangest things he told me coming home that he hoped that the people in church saw him because he was a and that it might be pleasant for them to remember on Christmas Day who it was that made lame Beggars walk and blind men see it seems to me that Tim is getting stronger every day that his limbs are growing that he's in better spirits it seems to me yes Bob I'm sure you're right he is getting stronger well we're all here that's the important Belinda help me with the goose yes [Music] Mother Peter I have some good news than for you I met by chance this morning at church a fine gentleman Fred holwell by name he's a nephew of our own Mr Scrooge and he remembered that I have a son coming of working age and he told me that he had a position open starting at three Shillings and six every week three Shillings and six every week so if you are agreeable you may start work on Monday next now I can begin to help you and mother more important you should be embarking on a fine career to start a boy at 3 and six a week hey it's typical of my nephew there's no wonder he's never been able to put by a penny perhaps he's put by more than money Fred he's doing this to spite me you know employing the son of my employee at an exorbitant [Music] [Applause] wage quiet quiet quiet children quiet good enough for an army so Brown and Chris mother you've out done yourself is it all right then hurry father cut the goose I can't wait haven't we forgotten something Lord we thank you for the Bounty you have placed before us we thank you for this day of love and joy we thank you for allowing us to be together to share with vacant place at this table I see a crutch without an owner carefully preserved if these Shadows remain unaltered by the future the child will die no no say he would be spared if these Shadows remain unaltered by the future none other of my species will find him here but if he is to die then let him die and decrease the Surplus population you use my own words against me so perhaps in the future you will hold your tongue until you have discovered what the Surplus population is and where it is it may well be that in the sight of Heaven you are more worthless and less fit to live than Millions like this poor man's [Music] [Applause] child [Music] a Triumph my dear another Triumph I Told You So mother it's a success what a relief for Mrs gret now their feast is over not quite just one more ceremonious moment [Music] look now I would like to propose a toast to Mr ebener scre Scrooge the founder of our Feast Mr [Music] Scrooge huh the founder of our Feast indeed I wish I had him here I'd give him a piece of my mind to Feast upon and hope he had a good appetite for it my dear the children it's Christmas Day it should be Christmas Day when one would drink the health of such a a stingy odious mean heart hard un feeling man as Mr ebena Scrooge my dear have some charity well well I'll drink his health for your sake and the day's sake but not for his long life Mr ebena Scrooge a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year I have no doubt his Christmas will be very merry and he'll be very happy Mr Scrooge Mr Scrooge Mr Scrooge Mr Scrooge Mr Scrooge Mr Scrooge he's made a point Bob cratchet has without me there would be no Feast no Goose at all my head for business has furnished him employment is that all you've learned by observing this family on Christmas day well no not all but one must speak up for oneself one's [Music] life to Merry Christmas bless and we have some time left take my robe and to Merry Christmas [Music] [Applause] [Music] bless where are we now just a street any Street this house we go in here [Music] think it might amuse you I in no mood to be [Laughter] [Music] amused my dear husband do you find my playing so amusing oh I'm sorry Mya I was thinking of his face yesterday humbug he said hug he said that Christmas was a humbug he believed it too I'd very much like to meet your uncle sir the drill way which you forray him tickles my heart he's a comical fellow but not so pleasant as he might be his offenses carry their own punishment dear brother-in-law had said he's very rich yes well that is very true but his wealth is of no use to him he doesn't do any good with it he doesn't even make himself comfortable with it squander that be comfortable you mustn't argue with those we visit it's useless and even tactless tact is quality I despise that I can see I have no patience with him well I have and I feel sorry for him sh sorry for me who suffers from his ill whims himself always here he takes it in his heart to dislike us and not come and dime with us and he loses a very good dinner indeed the reason I talk about my uncle sir is that my mother God Rest her saintly self was very fond of him she loved him it's true fan loved me and I heard dear fan do she were alive today Fred looks very like her me been reminded of that just recently I was only going to say that the consequences of his taking a dislike to us and not making merry with us is that he loses some pleasant moments which could do him no harm and I mean to give him the same chance every year whether he likes it or not and every year he'll say Christmas we must see to our guests is a can't he myself think well they seem to be happy well I suppose that free food and drink would be an occasion for pleasure most people happy in each other's company I mean everyone H there we should have a game a word game game what should it be Sim does everyone know the rules to simulate all right everyone now you should each have 5 Seconds to answer I'll ask the question Mr topper your keep count oh well I shall do my best now you'll each have 5 Seconds to answer if you fail to give an acceptable answer within that time then you must each stand behind your chair last one to uh who seated wins the prize don't go on so just begin oh I'm sorry M yes yes I shall yes I shall um proud as proud as a peacock dry as a bone plump my wife [Music] sorry one two seconds page quick ass oh wind 2 3 4 5 a wink you idiot EA sh you said you can neither see or hear us that's quite true oh yes sorry even I forget the regulations sometime after all I I do not come back very often sh I am trying to listen to the game modest as a maiden no well I'm sure it's a well-known simil well I was thinking of modest as of violet however I will accept your answer Janet attend tight ass tight ass a drum anyone knows that tight not very bright my nephew's W tight as your uncle Scrooge's purse strings CH that's quite wrong and your time is up you've lost and you must stand behind your chair tight is a drum that's what I was think here good for you frit boy's got a head on his shoulders and as for the laughter at my expense Spirit I'm inclined to Overlook at a view of the general gity of the evening it is now time to leave this Pleasant scene we have one more visitor to make before my time is done take hold of my robe Sly as a fox red R is a rose silent as the night no I'm m not at all no I know the grave where are we now I'm sure I don't know this place the name would mean nothing to you it's a place like many in this world do we have enough wood for the night a it'll last through at least there's one thing still free in this country Mary Peter they cooked they're too hot it'll be cold soon enough where did you get these father I didn't steal them if that's what you're saying she didn't say a stol them Ben she should have some respect don't berate the girl they fell from a cart into the road your father's not a thief girl not [Music] yet why are these people out here men and women in rags children eating scraps they're institutions have you visited any of them these institutions you speak of no well I'm taxed for them isn't that enough is it Ben come back to the fire look at these hands M they're hard hands they've done hard work I want to work I want to have bread for my children it's not right that there's no work we're together Ben that's the important thing I love you Meg I love the children tomorrow take the children and go to the parish poor house no no I'd rather we all drowned in the river than go to one of those places and be separated Forever Until I get work no Ben we're a family we stay together come come back to the fire come are you sh me this what has it to do with me are they not of the human race look here beneath my [Music] Rob look upon these what are they they are your children children they are the children of all who walk the earth unseen their names are ignorance and want beware of them but upon their brow is written the word [Music] doom they spell the downfall of you and all who deny their existence have they no refuge no resource now they there no workhouses are there no [Music] prisons cover them I do not wish to see them I've thought as [Music] much they are hidden but they live oh they live H time has come for me to leave you Ean Scrooge leave leave me here oh yes you cannot take me back to my bed it's too late it's cold the place is strange don't leave [Music] [Laughter] [Music] me well here we are we have seen the Ghost of Christmas p and the Ghost of Christmas present and I got to say you know the Ghost of Christmas Past that was was a little harsh I'd had a hard time with that it is well you know I guess it would be hard to go back and to see your past and to see uh to you know call up those feelings again yes and you know she just showed him when aband right when he was a boy being abandoned and then showed what he lost yeah the love of his life yeah now she's you know got seven or eight kids and they're talking a little bit of uh schmack on you know well a little bit I mean you know how would you have felt you know um poor Wretched Man I have busted that dud in his mouth you'd have been mad I would have been mad I would have been mad I'd have been mad too I was mad watching it yeah but I guess that was the point wasn't it it was the point you know and then you go into the Ghost of Christmas present shows the modest dinner of Bob cratchet and Bob ket's a good man you know he wants to give a toast to their benefactor right and you know his wife got that sharp mouth you know she she ain't hearing it well you know she's upset by it you know back then 1800s 1880s he'd have been like I said charity right do I need to spell it out right but Bob was a righteous man he was he was a rightous man yes he was yeah Tiny Tim you know he needed some braces or something well you know you got to feel bad yeah you know they weren't drinking no milk you know right he was drinking chalk water right they were broke I you know it was was hard it was hard it hard back then you know and then they go to uh Fred's and yeah they're having a good old they're having a good time that that you know he is invited to every year yeah but Ops out of yeah and it it doesn't cost him anything but emotion exactly you know you can't do it right so they leave Freds and now they're under the bridge where the Surplus population is Surplus population is right he finally gets to see yes right and where they are who they are they're good people they are good people they just can't find work no no you know they still want to work they have families they have children right right they are good people and that's genuine to the top are there no workhouses are there no prisons right right and then the Ghost of Christmas present shows him what's under his robe yeah ignorance and want want yeah and boy they're still around today isn't it as much today as it was then as it was in the past yes yeah but nobody wants to see it no no no it's not their problem right exactly exactly so the Ghost of Christmas present abandons him under the bridge where he doesn't know where he's at and he he's cold and Afraid yeah in this strange place left alone abandoned again again again yeah so let's get back to the conclusion of a Christmas [Music] car [Music] Spirit come back I wish to talk [Music] perhaps I I had made a mistake here and there talk too quickly about matters to which I gave no great thought very well we we we'll have a give and take come to some meeting of the minds I I'm a reasonable man SP p on me don't leave [Music] me what have I done to be abandoned like this what [Music] what [Music] are you the spirit which Jacob Marley for told would visit [Music] me and I in the presence of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come am I [Music] not you're about to show me the Shadows of the things that have not happened but will happen in the time before us is that [Music] so I fear [Music] you well than any Spectre I have [Music] seen I am prepared to Bear your company will you not speak to me very will lead on night is raining fast time is precious to [Music] [Applause] [Music] me this place I I know it very well the exchange it's like second home to [Applause] [Music] me oh I don't know much about it either way I only know he's dead when did he die last night I believe what happened to his money left it to his company perhaps who else did he have it'll likely be a very small funeral supposing we volunteered and form a party I'll go if lunch is provided but I insist on being fed for the time I'll waste have these men no respect for the dead I should go I suppose after all we did considerable business together well I must go and find the price of corn goodbye goodbye why was I private with that conversation what purpose could it have for me merciful Heavens what is [Music] this spirit this is a fearful place I I wish to leave [Music] it no I will not this you cannot make me do I say I understand you that is sufficient to the moment furthermore there must be someone in this city who feels some emotion because of this man's death I demand to see that [Music] person this is the most foul part of time you must have made a mistake taking a wrong [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] turn give us [Applause] [Music] a in there I have no business to transact in [Music] [Applause] there well open it up Mrs dber I might pay you for goods I haven't seen you'll not ask me how I came by these every person has a right to take care of himself that's my MTO s yours D and who's the worst for the loss of a few things not a dead man I suppose no indeed I mean if he' wanted to keep him after he was dead the wicked old screw why wasn't he more natural in his lifetime if he had been he'd have had someone to look after him when he was struck with death instead of lying there gasping out his last [Music] Alone by himself those are my things she's stolen my things I I'll have her before a magistrate what do you call these bed curtains you don't mean to say you took them down rings and all with him L there why [Music] not and don't get wax on his blankets his blankets I hope he didn't die have anything catching I wasn't so fond of him as I'd loer about if he [Music] [Laughter] did well what's your offer then those are not my things yes they are similar but but the person she speaks of that that could not be me a similarity perhaps one5 and three not a penny more if I was to be boil for it you're Harden Joe and no mistake I'm always kind to the ladies that's the way I ruin myself spit what perversity is this I asked to see some emotion in connection with this man's death you show me only greed and aest let me see some tenderness some depth of [Music] [Music] feeling must be some confusion you your fellow Spirits brought me here earlier very well you're devilish hard to have a conversation with suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of God verily I say unto you whoo whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child he shall not enter therein this color hurts my [Music] eyes it's better now this work makes my eyes red and I wouldn't show red eyes to your father when he comes home not for the world must be nearly his time past it rather I think he walks slower than he used to these last few evenings mother yet I've seen him walk home [Music] with with Tiny Tim on his shoulders very fast indeed and so have I and so have I and so have I but he was very light to carry and your father loved him so [Music] that was no trouble [Music] no trouble there is your father now hello my [Music] dear hello my dear ones father you're late we were worried about you I'm glad you're home father I am too you've become quite a little armful the reason that I'm late is because I walked by there today today I couldn't keep away it's so quiet and green you shall see it on Sunday we shall all go on Sunday I promised him that every Sunday I would [Music] walk my little child a little little child father please don't grieve so oh I'm sorry I have all of you a blessing to be thankful for do you know who I saw in the street today Mr Scrooge's nephew Fred and he greeted me in his usual cheerful way and he saw that I was a little sad he asked me what was distressing me and when I told him he said that he was heartly sorry for it and brother Tim is part of all of us for his sake we must go on living so long as we love one another you will always be alive yes of course Mighty but however and whenever we are parted from one another I'm sure that none of us will ever forget poor Tiny Tim never and when we recollect how patient he was and how mild although he was but a little little child I'm sure that we will not easily quarrel among ourselves I am a happy man I am a truly happy man I asked for tenderness and depth of feeling and you've shown me [Music] that nothing more I need to see take me me [Music] home what is this I thought we had agreed that you would transport me [Applause] home ins Spector something informs me that the moment of our parting is at hand I know it but I know not how tell me what man was that whom we saw lying [Music] dead no no before I draw near to that stone answer me this are the things you have shown me the Shadows of the things that will be are they the Shadows of the things things that may be [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] only men's courses will foreshadow certain ends I I accept it but if those courses be departed from the ends must change tell me that is so by what you show me [Music] hear me I I am not the man I was I will not be the man I must have been but for this visitation why show me this if I am past all hope good spirit your nature intercedes for me and pies me say that I may change these things by an altered life I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year I will even the past present and the future the spirits of all three shall strive within me I will not shut out the lessons that they teach tell me tell me that I may sponge away the writing on this Stone spare SM [Music] my own [Music] room I'm alive thank you spirit I will keep my promise I will live in the past present in the future the spirits of all three will strive Within Me Oh Heaven and Christmas time be praised for this I say this on my knees Jacob Marley on my [Music] [Applause] knees [Music] 9:00 and daylight but what day hello you there boy me sir yes you my good fell what day is his name Anonymous he wishes to remain anonymous anonymous you said that's what he said an anonymous gentleman well who could have sent it I have no idea perhaps it's a mistake that's what I thought it's got our name and address on it though what should we do then I say we cook it and eat it and have the best Christmas Feast we've ever had in our lives and I say Mrs cratchet what a splendid idea and God bless us all everyone and God bless us all everyone Merry Christmas Merry Christmas very oh Fred oh it's much too expensive but do you like it oh I love it it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen well then it belongs upon your wrist my D Merry Christmas oh Fred I do love you oh and not just for this I know I know who can that be well no one's expected this my God it's Uncle Ean your uncle what in the world would he want open the door Mary I'm sure I don't know Fred Uncle Eva may I come here yes come here please thank you do come in good afternoon mam Merry Christmas to you Merry Christmas to you Uncle EA this is my wife Janet Janet this is Uncle eanes it's a pleasure more like a surprise wouldn't you say well that too well that is quite true quite honestly it is a surprise when we spoke yesterday you made it quite clear it seemed to me at least that you had no intention of accepting my annual invitation I made other things clear too didn't I fa that Christmas was a humbug waste of time and money false and Commercial Festival devoutly to be ignored yes basically that was it and I've come for three reasons first to beg your pardon for the things I said about [Music] Christmas that was a humbug friend was it I didn't know it then but I know it now secondly I've come to meet your wife well here she is yes and a very beautiful woman she is too thank you I uh I was in love once would you believe that yes that I possess neither the courage nor the optimism perhaps the depth of feeling that you two have thirdly if the invitation to dine with you today today is still in force I accept of course it's still in force H I was sure that one day you are sure well apparently you were right yes I should like to die with you and your friends you'll be more than welcome you like games don't you yes yes as a matter of fact I do do you ever play uh simulators it's one of our favorites well perhaps we could play today quite possibly I'm very good at it and should the phrase titter be thrown out the answer is a drum yes so it is [Music] good you forgive me for saying this but I see the shadow of my sister in your face I loved your mother Fred for a time there I forgot just how much I loved her perhaps I chose to forget well now it isn't too much trouble I should like to sample some of their punch fores offense of course you've made us both very happy Uncle ebener have I yes God forgive me for the time I wasted [Music] 9:00 late again CR you'll see about [Music] this [Music] Mr cutet yes sir do you know what time it is yes sir what time is it 18 minutes past the hour sir 18 and a half minutes past the hour what do you mean coming here at this time of day I'm sorry sir I am behind my time yes I think you are step this way sir if you will please it's only once a year sir it shall not be repeated I was making rather merry yesterday well I'll tell you my friend I'm not going to stand for this any longer therefore therefore I am going to double your salary double my salary sir a Merry Christmas to you I'll double your salary for a start and I'll Endeavor to assist your family in any way I can and Tim Tim will walk again and grow stronger and stronger upon my life he will well we'll discuss the particular is this afternoon over a Christmas bow what what's the matter with you nothing sir well it's just nothing thank you sir my good fell make up the fire before we freeze to death buy some more coal before you DT another ey Bob cret yes sir ebena Scrooge was better than his word he became as good a friend as good a master as good a man as the old city knew and to Tiny Tim who did not die he was a second father it was said of ebener Scrooge that he knew how to keep Christmas well if any man alive possessed the knowledge may that be truly said of us and all of us and so as Tiny Tim observed God bless us [Music] everyone I his his and all his days his Ang and sorrow all his P he went to church once a year and was Christmas Day the is full of Hees here and there he turns away [Music] [Applause] open and stand Christmas so change of heart [Music] for the glory of the and all the children [Music] into Church Christ [Music] change Earth every [Music] well here we pick up with the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come I'd have had a hard time falling that one yeah he was a little for boating yeah and he doesn't show him anything really really too pleasing no and you know he takes him to Bob ket's house and there's an empty spot at the table where Tiny Tim was and uh that's a pretty sad thing well Tiny Tim will not survive he will not you know on the wages that Bob is making and right you know yep I mean it's not going to happen you know he can't he can't buy him noodles you know right have no ramen noodles then he had them milk teeth you know you can't eat that hard T right so you know Ty them is not going to survive he takes him uh to the seedar part of town yes and you know of course he doesn't realize but you know in his death right you know there's um well like she says you know um wasn't why wasn't he more natural in his life there was nobody there you know to be with him when he was gasping his last breath he was alone in his death there was nobody there completely alone right taking his belongings and selling him for a nickel right the curtains with the Rings on him yeah so and then the ghost shows him the tombstone and it has his name on it he wants to sponge those letters off of the stone right right why show me this if I can't do anything about it right right right then he awakens and he realizes that the spirits have done it all in one night right and he's happy he's very happy man he's flipping them slippers you know if you're flipping them slippers and that would have come down hit you in the head oh Christmas would have been over I wouldn't be buying a turkey for nobody right You' been mad we'll try tomorrow that's right tomorrow be another day tomorrow be another day we'll try it again I'd have been the same way I'd have been mad it been over but luckily and you know what it's great to see George C Scott jump up and down on on that bed like that you know cuz he meant it he did mean it you're right he did so you know he buys the Fri turkey yep right to send it to Bob cratchet and his family anonymously right so that they have a great Christmas dinner that's right and uh he does meet the guys and he you know um does make a donation you know to the poor and the needy with a lot of back pay a lot of back pay and heads off to Fred's yes and you know the truest thing about going to Fred's is they were surprised to see him and they said you've made us very happy and he was like really and I think at that point he realized it's not money or the things that you buy sometimes the treasure in life always actually is one another the relationships you have with one another and you know he says he says God forgive me for the time I've wasted That's Heavy that's very heavy you know that's always resonated with me absolutely you know because it's never too late to change or too late to realize no things and you know a lot of times we don't that's right we don't that's right and it's never too late it's never too late never yeah and you know afterwards you know he gives Bob cratch at the Rays and Throw Some Coal on the burner right you know Bob catches is like what's going what is going on here here my man is drunk he been smoking the bishop he's a little smoking Bishop on this right but you know at the end it says you know Scrooge became as good of a friend and as good as a master as the old town ever noon yes and he knew how to keep Christmas well all year round yes right it never escaped it wasn't just this time of year it always stayed with him he kept it all year round through the rest of his life and it's like Marley said his business should have been mankind mankind that's right yeah I mean that's that's heavy it is heavy it's very heavy I think it's one of the heavier films that we've showed it is yeah so you know I think that uh there's no better adaptation of this film no I think this one's the top this one's you know certainly great it really is it speaks to me it's always held a special place with me I agree we hope that you enjoyed it as well so we thank you for being here with us at Newcastle after dark we hope you join us again from the L treasure and Cinema and until next time Merry Merry Christmas [Music] [Music]
