well hello everyone welcome to Craven cottage for the Gary Neville podcast we've just seen Liverpool win by three goals to one and don't worry of course we'll talk about the title race before we're done but it's been a peculiar afternoon for us Gary because we've been aware that whilst we've been watching a very important game in the in the title race there's been an extraordinary FA Cup semi-final going on and Manchester United appeared to have squeaked through to what is the second consecutive Manchester Derby final um it's it's a bit odd to be asking you about it cuz self evidently you didn't see it but but whatever happened happened so what do you think I mean honestly I I saw the notifications coming through maner United going 3-0 up and thought right okay comfortable semi-final Victory but then just started to see that sort of centry first goal thought and then you see the second and then obviously the third and then there was a moment a few minutes ago and I that's why I'm just recovering from it to be honest I think there was only you left commentating or watching the fulam Liverpool game I think pretend I didn't notice that whole country at one point Peter there might have been a few people in Liverpool um but there was a 4-3 moment whereby it was offside and we were obviously I was watching just waiting for you know was it on was it off and one of the producers was talking to me but I mean look Manchester United have got through I can't comment on the goals I can't comment on the game I can't comment on what's happened but that would have that's a scary scary moment that for well for Eric tonog for the players for Manchester United they've got through I suspect there'll still be some criticism off the back of that game and some plaudits for centry but I suppose the most important thing at the start of the day was that Manchester United joined Manchester City and a second Manchester Derby on the bounce at Wembley in a few weeks time but yeah unbelievable really this this Manchester United Team sort of never sees to amaze you in terms of the things that they're capable of or not capable of yeah will you forgive me just for mentioning centry only because absolutely I think last spring they had a penalty didn't they against Luton to get into the Premier League at Wembley and now they've just lost a semi-final heartbreakingly at Wy and they're they're obviously a club which has risen from the absolute depths of their history and I mean wow what it must feel like to be a fan of that club today all I could think about I mean I played with Mark Robbins at Manchester United as a youngster and thinking about the impact that he had on Manchester United's history and Sir Alex Ferguson's time obviously we don't know whether the club would have followed through with sacking Sir Alex Ferguson if they hadn't have sort of won the FA Cup That season but that goal at Forest is widely regarded as being one of the most important goals in terms of determining a period of time and the idea today that that would have had I think a a a huge impact upon Manchester United's modern history because the The Fallout from that game of Manchester United losing Mark robbins's centry going through to an FA Cup Final would have been it would have been big it would been seismic and uh look centry have obviously done something incredible there today we don't know what it is yet we've not seen it but we know it's incredible to come back from 3 n down no clearly and and funly enough it it arrives on what is the second anniversary of Eric tenh hard's appointment and again we haven't seen the game we have to keep saying that but it sort of frames it doesn't it two years in we're reaching this moment of flux this change of ownership and listen he's won by a penalty kick so he's still in it he's got to two Cup finals he won a League Cup last year um it's difficult to keep putting it into some sort of context but two years in where are you confused I think confused and that's the the not knowing sort of what stage of the journey we're on not knowing what sort of the idea is in terms of style of play I think it's been talked about many times the players looking a little sort of disinterested some weeks other weeks not and it being quite confusing there's no sort of suggestion here that the players are chucking the towel in or anything like that and not playing for him because they come out some weeks and give you a brilliant performance we've seen in the FA Cup you know only a few weeks ago and Liverpool but they have some real lows and um the ups and downs the lack of consistency and reliability is obviously there for all to see I don't think there's anybody screaming and shouting about Manchester United anymore I think we all know what this is this season it feels like the season needs to end but it still could end with a trophy and trophy should never be sniffed at you know the idea that Eric tenh could in a few weeks time now the play maner City we know how difficult that is uh but the idea that Eric tag could finish you know with basically two trophies another final at Wembley last season getting into the Champions League last season a lot of injuries no doubt a lot of injuries even though they are predominantly in one or two areas and there should be no way at the levels of performance we see but we're confused by everything aren't we we're still sort of not knowing where we're going a little bit and that's happened before I think in the last 10 12 years if you think of what inos have done since they've come in they've essentially wiped out the whole top of the club so everything that we were saying when we're thinking for five six seven eight years about the fact that the culture the structure you know if they thought that anything there was worth keeping they would have kept it now obviously they'll make the decision on the manager at the end of the season and the players that's the ones that we always know we'll wait till the end of the season who never going to sack eron ha or get rid of the players midseason but they've made huge structural changes in the sort of top of the club from a management perspective and that's the most I think not not a l in thing but it's the most potent thing really to to I suppose the sign and evidence that it's there for us all to see that they weren't happy with what they're seeing internally and I I don't think that will stop I think it'll continue and there's going to be some sort of what would be upheaval turbulence I think for some time to come at Manchester United and it's whether the stability stays through the coaching and the playing side because it's how many of the sort of players and the coaching staff the uh new owners think should sort of if you like remain on the ship okay back to that semi-final once upon a time not very long ago that would have gone to a replay now semi-final replays haven't been a thing for a little while to be fair but it takes us on to the other topic of the week I played in the last ever semi-final replay probably the greatest and probably the best game I ever played in in my life in fact if people ask me what was the greatest game you ever played in I say that semi-final against Arsenal because they were a great side as well yeah fully enough I was there is one of the great privileges of my life but that's by the by semi-final replays haven't been there for a while but of course fa cut replays generally speaking have and they're not going to be anymore how are you feeling about that do you know actually the ultimate decision around scrapping replays I'm not in uh object I'm I don't object to it um I think that that what the carabal cup has done in the last few years and the fact that the idea of creating sort of a an event in one match that there is a sort of an outcome on an evening don't disagree with because I think that gives the lower league teams a greater chance of success I think sometimes replays can get the bigger clubs out of the mess and actually penalties sometimes can be a great chance for a lower league club to go through what I'm really objecting to is the the process the way in which it's been done um and it doesn't surprise me we have a premier league that is far too powerful and we have an fa that is too weak to stand up to them and and this week what they did is very dangerous you know a few years ago people sometimes maybe sort of get a little bit sort of we we don't forget the super league but what effectively tried to happen is that a number of clubs tried to change the format of a competition for self-interest greed and their own entitlement what's happened this week is that a format of a competition has been changed without proper consultation and approval of the majority of the clubs who are in that comp ition that's very very dangerous and I don't believe it's a smart move either move either there's a there's a legislation passing through Parliament on Tuesday for an independent regulator and the Premier League in the last few weeks have actually released paid ads on social media and in other outlets to actually sort of scare people off against the regulator if ever there was evidence that a regulator is needed in this country it is the fact that this week a the large the largest organization in the country in terms of group of clubs has not been represented in a major decision and a format change to a competition that they play in that can't happen and I asked the efl specifically on Friday did the Premier League and the fa tell you that they were going to announce this last week and they said no they made the announcement without the efl knowing I was told now there's no doubt that the efl were consulted on these changes throughout the process but the efl were quite clear that the removal of FA Cup replays would need to be in alignment with the new distribution deal of money coming from the Premier League through to the efl that's not happened that's not got passed through yet the Premier League sort of if you like committee board members whatever you want to call it so we've still got a situation where the money isn't being passed down on a deal that's sort of verbally being agreed yet they've changed the format and they've announced last week that the fa and the Premier League are changed to a format of a competition without actually having the efl support and backing we can't allow these things to continue and if I was the MPS if I were the government this week and I was looking at it it's the best evidence you would ever need because every time the Premier League act or make a decision month on month year on year it's more evidence that there is Need for proper governance of football and some sort of guarding and protection in place to stop what will happen because we have a group of clubs with entitlement who believe that they should have so much more and that they don't look after the pyramid it's an absolute entitlement it's self-interest and it's greed and they prove it time and time again and it cannot be allowed to continue unchallenged without proper authority to challenge it and the fa are too weak to challenge it and the efl are helpless and the National League at this moment in time OB if like the national league clubs are kicking off but the national league is an organization I think are a little bit worried that soft power that comes down from the Premier League which is a wonderful League we I'm watching it here this afternoon we Marvel at it every single week but there are some great faults and those faults have being exposed on a monthly basis when it comes to governance your your grasp of of football politics genuinely is is Way Beyond mine but can I so I'm genuinely asking you a question here the the one organization you haven't mentioned is ufer and it seems to me correct me if I'm wrong that the straw that broke the camels back in terms of the football diary are the two extra games of European football in the group stage of the Champions League which eat up a couple of G of midweeks sort of January February have they got any part in this kind of melstrom of scheduling well you've got a series of organizations throughout the world haven't you and throughout FIFA UFA obviously the uh the the the associations in our country and they're all trying to respond to the wishes of the top clubs you response of increasing the sort of number of European fixures is to the tops clubs wish to have more money more sponsorship more Capital every single year more certainty of them being in the competition um and that's where that comes from so UEFA have responded to the Super League probably of what was going on three four years ago and said look we'll give you we can give you something that represents what you wanted um so yeah you're absolutely right you know U I don't think particularly like the carabal cup because I think that the League Cup is something that exists in this country not every country in Europe so you could argue that maybe that's a competition but it's it's a famous competition in our country um the fa I I actually don't object to the removal of replays what I object to is the fact that there hasn't been a proper negotiation done a proper package put together with the efl clubs who were the predominant clubs in that competition there's 72 of them now if you wanted to free up a couple of weekends you could reduce the Premier League if you wanted to 18 clubs the Premier League would never dream of that they would scare them to death they wouldn't vote for that so you know they're willing to s if you like take away money from others but they're not willing to take away money from themselves ever and that's where I think if the distribution deal had been passed and done and in line with that then the FA Cup replays have been uh taken away you could argue that there had been a sweetener for the efl clubs and that become could be something that might you become overall as a deal worth you know worth doing but to announce it this week between the Premier League and the fa and not have the efl part of it and not even tell the efl that you're putting that announcement out and you've seen the backlash from the FL clubs and National League clubs they've had enough they've had enough that they're part of the game and the Premier League doesn't believe fundamentally I don't think that they are part of the game now did you pass money down but they should pass money down absolutely they should because the Premier League is is 20 clubs this year but it'll be 20 different clubs next year we're short on time and there's two more issues one is Nottingham Forest in the statement they announced they they put out today in the wake of their defeat at ever what are you thinking oh I mean I spoke about this really passionately about a month or six weeks ago on this podcast about um the appointment of Mark clattenburg the behavior of the owner on the side of the pitch and how you know Nottingham Forest have had some poor decisions against them this year and for that they must be frustrated they must be absolutely livid and we all have great empathy and sympathy for that but they're grabbing defeat from Victory they're grabbing defeat from Victory they could sit there now what they could say is well why why should we continue to be you know badly done to and and and not say anything yeah of course you can potentially come out at the end of the game your manager is a great spokesman at the end of the game so as your captain to be able to come out and say that we're not accepting the quality of decisions that are going against us and that would have a real impact you could if you wanted I'm not a fan I'll be honest with you of written statements from the club per se just full stop when it comes to actually talking about referees I just don't believe that that's a line you should cross I think managers can say as my manager did back in the day or players did we got a shocker today that was a disgraceful decision what the hell the official's playing at you might get a little bit of a fine and the club might cover it for you because you do a deal with the sort of if you like chairman that look we're going to have to go out and defend ourselves here and put a marker down all those things have happened in the past what I would say is though today and in the past few weeks that the way in which Nottingham Forest are behaving is that it lacks class and that's a class Club that's a club that historically when I was growing up acted in a way where you felt values and principles were really at the Forefront of everything that they did through the manager that they had at the time and I mentioned Brian kff a few weeks ago and I talked about Nottingham Forest and its history today is a horrendous day for Nottingham Forest horrendous day with the decisions that they possibly had but a horrendous day for them as a club in terms of how they've reacted to the situation to mention the fourth official being a fan and infer in some way that that's had an impact upon the decision making process and suggest in some way to me as a fan thinking that you know is he cheated us oh he's done us over there that type of sort of suggestion I think you're into really dangerous territory when you start suggesting that and then this explore all options all the options that they said I had a real problem with Liverpool saying that after the offside at Tottenham earlier this season what do you mean by that are we going to replay every bad decision are you going to get points given back come on what is explore all options I hated it when Liverpool made that point earlier on in the season and I made it very clear at the time that it was wrong and it's become a theme moving forward that clubs now think they're going to explore what are they going to do Sue replay the game ask for points back no that's never going to happen you know unless you can prove somehow that there is absolute wrongdoing which there won't be in that sense I can't believe there is it's just a nonsense so look I'm I'm disappointed for for Nottingham Forest for the players for the fans but I'm disappointed in Nottingham Forest for the way in which they've acted it's a horrendous tweet that that they put out there and they will regret that they will regret that as a football club and they'll look back upon it and there'll be people within the football club who I'm sure disagree with it someone is driving this Behavior this cultural behavior of sort of you know the way in which they're handling these sort of if you like poor decisions and it's not the right way to do it okay you've got two minutes on the title race now uh we saw arsenal we don't Wolves yeah and in a very similar sort of fixture we saw Liverpool win at Fulham so how's it progressed I always think when you get this look last weekend we left uh the Emirates didn't we and we weren't deflated but we were a little bit you know that three horse all of a sudden City rise to the top you just think here we go you know the machines in front it's just going to be simple but there were very important victories this weekend for Arsenal and Liverpool and there were struggles they were awkward games before you you looked at them wolves and full of oh nasty little ones those and you know that if you're not good in those games and you're not at your best and you don't dig in you'll get you'll get beat up and and I'm I'm I'm glad I'm I'm glad for more ways one that we've got three hours title race but the fact that Arsenal and Liverpool season were just on a sort of a little bit of an edge weren't they coming into this weekend having gone out of Europe and just that little wobble last weekend you could see it almost just starting to sort of just drift away a little bit but now those victories I think will just reset them obviously ' got difficult games in midweek I think Arsenal play Chelsea and Liverpool play Everton in a Mery side Derby so but they have to make sure they're four points in front find a way to get in front by four points and keep Manchester City honest you know I was involved in probably 12 to 13 14 title races and won eight of them but lost six of them so I had good experience of losing a title and the one where you the ones where you lost where you thought you didn't keep the opposition team that won it honest because you thought well they're three points in front or the two points in front so you think oh and then you drop points but then they do and you think oh no if we' have won our game actually we' have been okay so it's about keeping Manchester City honest making Manchester City win every single match and what Liverpool and Arsenal have to think that we've got to win every game you must win every game to win the title we've got to go on the Run of Our Lives they're capable of it if you look at sometimes the collective group of games as a five it can seem overwhelming but if you look at them individually they can become a sort of become a run of games that you think actually I I fancy ourselves to beat them I fancy ourselves to beat them I mean Arsenal play Chelsea and Tottenham now this week so this is this is I mean say this is it they go to they go to Manchester United in a few weeks which will be a tough game for them but this is a this is the week for Arsenal really because if they win those two games they'll really you know the shoulders will be up Liverpool they'll have had three away games in a week by the end of so if they win their two games that they've got in the rest of this week they'll feel like that as well so a really big week coming up a pivotal week week Manchester City go to Brighton Thursday they're back on track Manchester City I think they've done the same job actually watched their game last night against Chelsea I thought Chelsea Chelsea really well by the way I want to mention Chelsea because I was critical of them in the final after the Liverpool extra time but I thought some of their play against Manchester City in terms of the defensive work and now the structurally set up and defending was brilliant but Manchester City got through that game that was big for Manchester City so well done to City arsal Liverpool for getting through this weekend having been knocked out of Europe I've been there it's not easy to recover mentally but they have done but this is a huge week we've got in front of us now it surely is and uh we'll see you again at goodison on Wednesday Wednesday night will lovely thank you thanks
