Neil Patrick Harris on CBS This Morning

welcome back to CBS this morning I'm Gayle cash and I'm Charlie Rose with erica Hill Neil Patrick Harris is a two-time Emmy winner him one of those prizes for hosting the 2009 Tony Awards so on Sunday he'll be back for his one-two-three third time as host of the Broadway's biggest night and Neil Patrick Harris do you know how excited we all were and I'm not I'm not exaggerating us the crew everybody when we said Neil Patrick Harris is coming we are delighted to have you here thank you very much I hope that you were feeling the love so it's the third time are you thinking you'll get it right this time there's hope right know your reputation precedes you because when people see that you're doing it they go great because he's the best you know they say it's sort of like people get excited about Billy Crystal hosting the Oscars that's how people feel about you hosting the Tony cool you know the Tony's are kind of an underappreciated Awards Show as far as I'm concerned because it's kind of a niche market some people that don't know Broadway and don't know the shows really have no interest in tuning and so it's sort of my job to encourage people to watch and see what the season's shows are so it's less some performing and entertaining on my end and more kind of emceeing a big night it's a bit of an infomercial for Broadway but they need that you know Broadway people are underappreciated and as far as I know a lot of people don't know who some of these people are that work ridiculously hard show after show after show a year it's up to you it up to me but it's a good it's a good it's a good opportunity for me to be able to honor them in a good way so it makes my job and in many ways easier because I'm not working hard I'm really passionate about it you're also one of the producers this year too oh yes so does that does that change it at all for you because you have a little bit more of a say if you want to maybe showcase some of these shows or actors that people don't know as well that don't have the big names yeah I like water cooler moments I like to add a little little things in it where you kind of need to watch or or maybe you'll have to pause and TiVo back and and and and freeze-frame and go did something is that happening like I like the little weird strange moments the huge Ackman little song-and-dance we did last year was super a surprise and we rehearsed it in in in secret studios and and so that was fun so we have a couple of those kind of thing this year it's a good thing about it you got a lot of talent to draw on absolutely mostly well that's a great point most award shows the entertainment that's in it is usually put together just for that one night and so everyone's fingers across and it usually doesn't go very well and these performances are well crafted and they do them every every night and they're spectacular so you're gonna be getting to see 12 performances that are gonna be slam dunks everybody looks at it they say gee I'd love to do that or be they say that looks easy but it is very very difficult what's the hardest thing about hosting probably the front end is hard of trying to since I do and producing an ingress or coming up with a creative content a little bit it's hard to foresee how it's going to go we really can't craft the show until the nominations come out because if we've crafted you know real spider-man heavy and then they don't get many nominations then we're a little bit in the weeds and so I feel like a bad stand-up comic trying to come up with funny material early when the show is happening the time management's probably the most difficult because it's shocking how someone going over there time by even just 45 seconds or a minute Jackie it's what we call live television giving a speech and it's a great speech and so you let him go and you let him go you're suddenly three minutes over yes and for three hours show three minutes is a lot it's a go back stage and saying we're not gonna have time for your award sorry well not awards but we started sort of padded so I'll have introductions for our presenters but if we're if we're going long then I'll just come out and say late and gentlemen this person instead of give a joke first or have the vo person do it so there's a lot of kind of backstage huddling which is the four freakiest part but kind of the most exciting and I'm thinking listen you it's a good time to be Neil Patrick Harris you're engaged you've got twins I've always wanted twins Neil Petty and here handfuls I know I'm thinking what's it like to live with a man who can cook who's smart who's talented and kind I'm looking for one of those two to be you right now is the point I make yeah thanks you're lying it's a good time in in the life that I we're able to you know have kids and yes and not cower around so um we're not we certainly didn't have them to make any political point we really wanted babies and it worked out well we got to right off the bat and that's what we were hoping for and they're hilarious and my only regret is that work Dave and I worked so hard that way you know we're having to schedule time to see them at least this week so I feel kind of bad but but they came to New York as well and you think it's too busy and crazy but that there's so many sidewalks and Central Park has just stuff everywhere water features that they can play around yeah the world are in New York City love it they just showed the video of you and David and the twins with Oprah I love the interview by the way that's you know really really well oh I thought so daunting thing to have someone come into your house sort of judge your house and then like interviewer you know Jane she was so excited too well but there was Oprah's make you may feel a little bit better on one hand because you feel like you're in good hands it's Oprah freaked out by a-- but she couldn't been lovelier but now I love how you really talked about your twins in particular that fatherhood in the beginning was difficult for you but clearly you were you were way past that stage you're talking about the twins are with you in New York well it is it's difficult but you're no longer you no longer seem to be afraid of it you really bonded with them very I like communication I'm much more of an analytical like thinker person than David who's much more emotional and kind of feels sense more than I do so the first little chapter when they're just crying and lamenting like holding care I can certainly hold them and love them but I'm much better when I they can point to things or we could have a dilation yeah when the president stepped forward on same-sex marriage yeah the community they communicate obviously responded you even sent a note to him saying Bravo I tweeted about it that a note that the 21st century I did I mean I think it's a great big the forward momentum in the acceptance of sort of the gay community as legitimate people within our society is slow-moving yes but I think it's I think the slow steps are kind of necessary because if you you know as I think you guys know if you make a big broad changes people then step one and want to reach Ange it in another direction so I'm very proud of what the president has done a lot of people I think feel like he's moving too slow but I think he's always been a proponent and a fan and Friends of LGBT people and he's made some amazing moves that are very sincere and respectable and appreciated and the other day there are you and the president were on the same stage together share this stage so forensics and Neil Patrick Harris open for him yeah that was fun okay have you here thank you so much thanks for having me Sunday yeah awesome sharing your on Neil Patrick
