in college football presented by dr pepper tonight we're in the american athletic conference for the ucf knights playing host to the temple owls on this saturday night from the bounce house hi everyone thanks for joining us mike corey alongside hudson mason welcome to orlando as we look forward to watching one of the fastest and most electrifying offenses in the country tonight with ucf i don't know if i'm going to earn my paycheck tonight mike with as fast as this ucf offense goes but they're fun they're exciting they keep you on the edge of your seat with their ability to score anywhere on the field and they're going to challenge temple's defense their depth defensively because of how frequently they snap the ball but also the communication jeff knowles the defensive coordinator needs to minimize the communication in between snaps to help out his young defense we'll get to the knights quarterback dylan gabriel in a little bit but how about the two deep threats that they have and how outstanding they've been this season yeah two of the best receivers in all the country on one side of the ball starts with marlon williams leads the country in receiving yards he can play the field receiver position he can play the boundary does really a great job as a unique knack for understanding space depending on what the defense is given on the other side of the formation jalen robinson you turn on the tape the first thing that pops off mike is speed for jalen his ability to get past the third level of the secondary and create explosive plays and as you see here you cannot play him man on man he'll eventually make you pay these two have combined for over 1500 receiving yards so far this season for the knights on the other side the temple owls and make no mistake about this this has been a very good football team for a while now they've had a winning record every year since 2013 they went to five straight bowl games and that's through three different coaching staffs as well however one and four this year injuries covet all that severely undermanned again here tonight yeah it's been a battle of attrition for the owls all season long only 45 scholarship players is what they travel tonight make no mistake about it there's going to be no element of surprise for coach carey for them to win this game they've got to win the running battle control the trenches i wouldn't be surprised to see them try to steal possession maybe go for a fake punt and even go for it several times on fourth down tonight beautiful night here in orlando 76 degrees here at game time a light wind [Music] ucf won the toss they deferred and it'll be temple to receive to start this game here tonight jayden blue back deep for the owls and daniel obarsky gets us started for the knights [Applause] and temple's going to begin from the 25-yard line we talked about it their starting quarterback is out their backup quarterback is out and we go to real mitchell now the sophomore from eastville california transfer from iowa state what do you know about his play here well getting his first career start tonight and i remember my first career start you want to come out and just settle in get some completions but there's no doubt that real mitchell's number one skill set is his mobility and so look for offensive coordinator mikey rimovich to really try to use his legs in the run game tonight to take advantage of the light box count tavon ruley starts in the backfield for the owls and he gets the call on first down and if you think about the backfield right now for temple he's the only guy with one career start and that was last week that's it everybody else making their first start if they get into the game for temple tonight yeah tavon's a former walk-on he's earned the respect and the right to be the starter you know roman davis their leading rusher opted out last week but tavon is a guy who gets better as the game goes on only 15 carries last week against smu i would be shocked if he doesn't get a minimum of 25 30 touches tonight and this is what i expect to see all night mike just wear out the clock wear it down run it down soak it up second down play fake mitchell pressure east the bulls is taken away literally by iri eric gilliard for ucf wow fields recovery by the defense first down who is that david pollock taking the court the ball right out of the quarterback's hands eric gilliard blitzes off the edge and he doesn't even hit him he just steals it right out of rio mitchell's right hand an incredibly it's instinctive play there by gill yard very reminiscent of our own espn david pawlik many many years ago in columbia south carolina stealing it out of the hands of the south carolina quarterback yeah good call right there on that one i haven't really seen that before and that was a heck of a play by eric gilliard the junior linebacker coming that's gonna go down as a fumble and taken away by ucf and right off the bat they get to the offensive side inside the red zone and it's gonna be greg mcrae on the carry and we talked about this they're gonna go fast yeah they're all about tempo and spacing you'll see this all night uh they don't substitute much they lead their players on the field that's what allows them to go fast gabriel to the end zone and that's incomplete and nearly picked off and got right back for the temple owls that was braswell on coverage as they wanted jacob harris yeah you're gonna get a lot of one-on-one outside tonight they'll do a good job temple will of mixing it up but you're going to have to ask these corners like christian brazil right there the winds of 101 back to mcrae and he is tripped up in the backfield initially by arnold ebbacady and then finished off after a short game but it's going to be fourth down and one this is actually the area and statistically the one place that ucf has the most i guess room for improvement 73rd in the country in red zone offense they do a great job of getting down to the red zone uh but at times have missed on some golden opportunities like this one on a short sudden change to score points instead of kicking a field goal fourth of a yard mcrae carries first down [Applause] [Music] touchdown well it's the left side of this offensive line for ucf block down block down and a great kick out block by the tight end jake hescock there and it's going to be a combination all night of otis anderson and greg mcrae josh hypel they're going for it on the sudden ruling on the field of a touchdown is under further review on fourth and one really leaning on the strong side of that offensive line which is the left side with cole schneider and edwards collins we'll see if his knee if the ball crosses the plane as the knee goes down hard to tell mike from that angle the ruling on the field was a touchdown let's see where that knee is and where the ball is simultaneously either way it's going to be a first down at the very least yeah it's tough to tell there from but it looks like you know all you gotta do is touch the beginning part of that white line and that's a touchdown the ruling on the field was a touchdown as they take a look at it william quink who was the guy that made the tackle but from our vantage point apparently not in time and just two minutes off the clock here in this first quarter and if it stands it'll be six nothing nights four plays all they had to do was go 16 yards after that takeaway if you will literally by eric gilliard of the quarterback real mitchell rip the ball right out of the quarterback for temple's hands and set ucf up inside the red zone to start this game it would be mccrae's sixth rushing touchdown here's anthony calabrese sarah fisher the ruling on the field stands it's a touchdown yep so mcrae runs it in from seven yards out sixth touchdown of the season and daniel obarsky will come on to try to make it 7-0 short sudden change right there and a and a heavy dose of running the football down there in the red zone and i know that's where josh hypo wants to see this team take the next step is running the ball in the red zone [Applause] [Applause] well greg mcrae on the fourth and one josh hypo putting a lot of trust in his young running back ucf scores first espn college football prime time is presented by dr pepper the official drink of fansville and in part by allstate you've never been in better hands how about josh hypel there quarterback for oklahoma and take a look at this shot when you look over in the far left you got drew brees ladainian tomlinson josh hypel and the winner on the right chris winky yes all right yeah i was only like seven years old in 2000 so it took me a second coach hyper played at oklahoma 1999-2000 graduated 2001 was there as a assistant coach quarterback coach co-offensive coordinator from 2006 to 2014 then he goes to utah state was the offensive coordinator there for 2015 and missouri for a couple years as the oc and now here and his first head coaching position for the knights yeah and you talk about a relationship with a quarterback i've always valued i think quarterbacks always value dylan gabriel i know it does the relationship of having a head coach who has sat in that chair has played the position and knows what it takes to play it at a high level he really values that real mitchell on the keeper for temple a couple yards in their second offensive series and you know you and i were joking during the timeout okay they're gonna you know slow it down here try to run some clock and then the ball gets ripped out of his hands on the first series so that's one place that this ucf defense has been really good this year they've given up their fair share of yardage but in terms of the turnover margin they're top 10 in the country and they've been really advantageous at creating turnovers and creating short side fields for their offense but this for this temple offense they can't get away from just because of one bad possession what they really want to do which is run the football and milk the flop they set up the screen on the catch jayden blue as he heads to the sidelines and he's gonna set up a third down and about five tayden bethune knocked him out and this is the world that temple has to live in tonight to have a chance third and five or less on third down and asking real mitchell to make high percentage type throws slants hitches finding the one-on-one match-up to his best receiver his leading receiver tonight randall jones is out with hurt ribs so look to him to go back to jaden blue or brandon mack on these third downs well you called it they're at the top of the screen right now mack on the outside blue in the slot who goes in motion third and five mitchell for mac he was being held and here comes multiple flags as devonta brown the true freshman defensive back was on coverage here's the call mass interference defense number seven the ball will be placed in the spot the foul automatic first down they'll take it that's what they need yeah and almost always when you throw that short sided route on third down especially when it's to the the sideline of temples of temple's bench you're always going to get some coaches and players calling for a pi but that was the right call a little yank and scratch there by devonta brown on third down [Music] so a fresh set of downs here from the 38. ruley is the running back you're going to see temple do a lot of that tonight they really believe that when they check to the sideline ucf stays in the same defense whistles blow prior to the snap delay game offense five yard penalty first down that's the conundrum though right when you're milking the clock trying to get into the perfect play quarterback's got to be in a young quarterback has got to be cognizant of of where the play clocks are in the stadium he's never played here before so identifying where those are and knowing how much time he got left on the clock [Applause] first and 15 after the penalty ruling on the carry and he's met just across the 35-yard line tackle made by landon woodson you had said it earlier rahman davis went into the transfer portal 10 days ago so he is done and he is out and that was their top running back so enter tavon ruley the senior making his second career start here tonight yeah it's gonna be running back by committee not only tonight for this owl's offense but really the rest of the year and that also includes the quarterback real mitchell getting his legs involved in the run game you know here again they are freezing it you call this the ice play you look over to the sideline trying to help out his young quarterback get into the best play possible second down to 12 again that's a dangerous pass it's intercepted and then dropped now they're gonna say well what are they going to say it was intercepted by tatum bethune and it's going to be ucf ball this should be an interception and then a fumble i think it's going to stay ucf ball because bethune went out of bounds but they're trying to throw a bubble route to the boundary here and tayden bethune fights through two blocks at the same time to steal it and intercept it and that just can't happen you got two guys trying to block tayden bethune there and now the question becomes mike is did he control the ball for enough steps for it to be ruled a true interception the ruling is an interception and then a fumble out of bounds so ucf ball and now they're going to take another look at it so here you go again the bubble round when you're ripping that bubble route as a quarterback you're expecting your receivers out there to do their job which is perimeter blocking and david martin robinson one of the guys out there on the perimeter just doesn't get his hat across tatum bethune's shoulder pads not physical enough at the point of contact and tatum splits it for an interception in all my years of watching college football i have very rarely seen a guy fight through two blocks to intercept a a bubble pass like that seriously right i mean on these first two series is we've had eric gilliard just rip the ball out of the hands of the quarterback real mitchell got it back for ucf and on this play i mean bethune just blows up the three receivers there to intercept this ball and then loses it out of bounds there so we're gonna see if this does stand well and give credit to bethune too because that is a byproduct of a guy studying tape watching the tendencies knowing and also being preached to by his coaches all week hey early in the game young and experienced quarterback they're gonna be trying to get out the ball out of his hands very quickly and hunts it they just did it they just did the exact same play right they shifted the three in the bunch formation and they tried to set up yet another screen we just saw it you know so you're absolutely right for him to jump that and recognize it he already saw it once and he's a guy who's played all different linebacker positions i mean they love bethune's ability to adjust and play where they need him and he's just a sophomore out of miami florida here's the call from anthony calabrese after further review the ruling on the field stands of an interception the ball was fumbled during the return forward out of bounds the ball will be placed at the 27 yard line first down ucf let's see again here just ripping it out throwing the bubble route trusting he's got it one two yeah and then it comes out i mean lucky the ball went out of bounds but again another short field for what is already the most potent offense in all of college football well you can keep adding some uh turnovers forced to this list and the turnover margin which is going to keep going up and up they're already plus two here tonight temple has run six plays and has turned it over twice so from the 27 dylan gabriel outside route is caught by jalen robinson that's a first down who you mentioned in the open they call him jflash and the sophomore they hustle right back up to the line here yeah the nickname's appropriate because flash means speed in the blink of an eye he can beat you on any type of route now it's otis anderson and he is met by william kwenko on the tackle for temple this is if you're a temple defense a part of this temple defense right here where just forcing ucf to kick a field goal will feel like a catastrophic win a huge win for your defense anderson again powers his way stays on his feet and gets the touchdown otis anderson for ucf 14 yards for the score well the coach has told us this week he's only 175 pounds small but runs courageously look at him lower shoulder pads boom keep his head up his eyes up he's got a low center of gravity and when you look at him on tape he reminds you of a lot of a modern day darren sproles they use them in the slot to catch passes they'll put them in the backfield he is a swiss army knife for josh hypel and josh heigl does a tremendous job of getting him the ball flag says there's movement here before the extra point attempt and you know this is exactly what's the call false start offense number 57 five yard penalty retry exactly what you can't have in giving ucf short fields it's already tough enough i mean they can go the length of the field you know and they could score from 80 yards in a rock tonight let alone from 20 and 30. right so here's what's happened they've had three plays 27 yards and 35 seconds for these touchdowns i mean it's crazy and it's already danger zone here if you're temple we haven't even played five minutes as daniel obarsky for the extra point [Music] 14 nothing nights well the engine is starting to rev for this ucf offense and otis anderson small in stature but big in heart ucf up 14. [Music] you're watching the american athletic conference on espn as we welcome you back to orlando temple sixth place 13 yards two turnovers ucf seven plays 43 yards two touchdowns [Music] mike corey alongside former georgia quarterback hudson mason here tonight from the bounce house about 9 000 fans that they've allowed in and the student section off to our left jumping up and down here as they should from the first two offensive series that ucf has had one of the best uh stadium names in all of college football the bounce house that's right we should say is their defense that's been outstanding with the fumble and also the interception that's led to the 14 points all right what do you do now if your temple here all right down 14 nothing early well you're limited offensively uh because of the of really the challenge to create plays in the passing game and so uh the worst thing you can do if you're mikey rimovich is get away from your identity and your identity is running the football and so i would stick with it i would stay patient with the quick games still help my quarterback trying to garner some confidence uh and try to continue to keep your defense off the field by controlling the trenches [Applause] tavon really on the carry and maybe a half a yard and you need the offensive line to play well right i mean the center 62 cj perez guy's a graduate student he's a transfer out of northern illinois where former uh where the coach rod kerry was before he came to temple and he transferred to temple this summer and remember take it over from matt hennessey not an easy job had to see a third round draft back to the nfl yeah and rod kerry challenged this offensive line last week and they answered the bell for the first half against smu they did not in the second half they got to play better he said that straight from rod kerry's mouth is we got to be more physical at the point of attack on the offensive line suck it down mitchell swings it out to rui trying to make a move and gets up close to the 30-yard line he's going to set up a third down and six [Applause] last week it wasn't bad i mean through the half i mean they were leading 13 to 10 and then all of a sudden the second half it was a 24 nothing stretch there for smu they only had 196 yards of offense though yeah and it's unbelievable to see only giving up 196 yards of offense or you would expect to win that game uh and some short fields in the second half but here again on third down is all about on third and medium finding jaden blue and your play makers mack on the perimeter looks like ucf is going to play a man mitchell the pass incomplete and almost picked off for the second time tonight by richie grant as they wanted darius pittman the tight end and correct myself they gave up 27 second half points last week in that loss after leading 13-10 at the half here's the play well you can see how quick the mental clock right now of real mitchell is and cam good getting some internal pressure up front that forces real to get the ball out of his hands quickly and that's the perfect type of defense that you want on third and five forcing your quarterback to get the ball out of his hands prematurely on the return here otis anderson he gets away from the first guy gets across the 30-yard line for the knights and they'll take over for the third time on offense on top 14 to nothing next week we have bedlam on on abc and the espn app number 14 oklahoma state taking on number 18 oklahoma in norman sooners have the conference's highest scoring average and the cowboys have the stingiest d so as you know something has to give that's next saturday 7 30 eastern 4 30 pacific on abc haven't even really had a chance to talk about dylan gabriel the sophomore quarterback for ucf and we'll see what they do here on their first play from the 35. play fake gabriel rolling looking and gunning to the sideline incomplete wanted good coverage there by khmer brown for temple well one of the very few times that you will see a guy running down field open and dylan gabriel not pulled the trigger he had jalen robinson kind of running up and down the sideline with a step beat on the db usually you'll see cadilland throw that this is bentavious jamaica craig mcrae on the carry greg mcrae he has the touchdown earlier from seven yards down and the senior was brought down by alex odom see ucf's temple they stay in the same personnel package gabriel on the keeper and has the first down ripped down just across the 45-yard line it was evan boozer but gabriel enough for the first such a part of his defense where you see the maturation process nothing open there and he takes up the first down with his legs hanging back and now unleashes it here from marlon williams and he makes two guys miss stays on his feet somehow marlon williams inbounds and finally pushed out inside the five-yard line amir tyler saved the touchdown for temple but how about williams well keeping his eyes downfield dylan gabriel finds his favorite receiver he calls gots the it factor and the balance with the lower body to put out his hand and turn what should have been a 10 or 15 yard play into a 40-yard day gabriel to the end zone it's drops incomplete and williams could not hang on a little too tired after the acrobatic catch and run on the previous play but he'll tell you he should have caught that one on a simple out route should have been a touchdown dylan gabriel identifies that he's got one-on-one over there and that's just pitch and catch usually for those two 49-yard catch and run there for marlon williams setting up second down and goal here from the four greg mcrae is the back [Applause] already has one touchdown looking for his second and he is just shy from the spot just outside the goal line it's going to be third and goal less than a yard to go arnold avacady in the tackle for temple i'm going to bring in brett bell 45. the backup offensive lineman the big guy the 662 ninety pound senior in this goal line package yeah when they bring bell in it's pretty much guaranteed they're gonna run it somewhere between the tackles this is their jumbo package and right now the push that they're getting up front between and matthew lee i would expect the same thing mcrae walks in for the ucf touchdown again it's just the push the constant push the leaning on the leaning on up front right now for this ucf offensive line matthew lay again here at center c big number 55 65 cole schneider just fighting fighting fighting and not enough resistance along the front seven of the temple isles defense [Music] well this drive started back at their own 35-yard line but it's the same result as the previous two drives this one they go 65 yards and a minute 47 for the touchdown marlon williams one of the best playmakers in the country his ability to stay up and create explosive plays is what makes him special ucf up 21. [Music] otis anderson on the left has one touchdown greg mcrae on the right's got two and it's 21 zip knights 6 51 to play in this first quarter still i mean how about the 21 already yeah they've got more points than they do offensive plays for ucf and that goes exactly 21 points which is most in the first quarter this season for ucf so it goes exactly against what temple wanted to do which was tackle well in space jayden blue on the return for temple gets up close to the 30-yard line and we'll see if they can hang on to this ball here and at least take a little bit of time off the clock on this drive it's just been tough sledding i mean got real mitchell who's the basically third string quarterback for this team and i just put in a very tough spot that's his third game of the season ran for 66 yards last week and i know you said that earlier that's some of the skills he brings to the table you got to get him out in space a little bit too yeah you do but uh when the quick game and the intermediate passing game isn't working this ucf defense is basically loading the box and it becomes a numbers game in favor of ucf tavon ruley on the run up to the 35-yard line [Music] eric gilliard on the tackle for ucf a screen pass to tavon rule he may be here something to just get a first first down we've only seen one first down tonight and that came via a penalty on third down on a pass interference by ucf but just something to finally move the change and let this offense kind of take a deep breath and exhale might see ruley in the wildcat a little bit tonight as well you're told second down and five [Applause] keeper mitchell there you go first down and gets up ended in a big way richie grant on the tackle but it's a first down for the owls as they move the sticks up to the 42. see here this is the part where you get real mitchells this defensive lineman right here for central florida just peeking his eyes down christopher deloach and then real mitchell pulls it and gets it out the back door those are some of the zone replays the option to let real mitchell pull the ball that they need to add to this offense person and really he's going to be dropped in the backfield they're all over it [Applause] again for ucf and a player is down here i believe that's tainan bethune who's the guy that had the interception a couple series ago they attend to him yeah he helped make the tackle and then just kind of got landed on zone guy then a temple player as well let's hope he's all right yeah a little friendly fire there trying to make the play hopefully it's nothing more than just having the wind knocked out of them and it's a defense you know you talked about earlier they've given up some points they've given up some yards this year i mean they're trying to bear down a little bit and they have already in this game there's no doubt about that bethune is a very valuable piece to that linebacking core he's a guy that's played all three linebacker positions he's played sam he's played mike he's played well and with the loss of eric mitchell you know he he serves as a very valuable piece right next to eric gilliard on the internal part of that defense yeah randy shannon defensive coordinator who we caught up with this past week you know we asked them too with the way their offense goes and how fast they move you know what that's like for guys on his defense you know and they try to build depth to be able to rotate guys in and out but you know they're asked to be out there a lot they are and they value it as an opportunity you know most defenses when your offense snaps the ball as frequently as their offense does 90 snaps a game you know you can sometimes guys will gripe and whine about you know oh we're back on the field so quickly it's the exact opposite for the mentality of this knights defense they value it as an opportunity to get out there and create more turnovers create more havoc and you know because they're so good at creating turnovers it's made up for other uh downfalls this year like in the run game there's randy shannon right there defensive coordinator then all across the land and coaching in the nfl and the sec really one of the sharper defensive coaches in college football loss of six second and 16. temple trying to get something back from that and that's really again derek gaines on the tackle still going to be third down and long here for the owls third and eight well let's see if temple decides to try to draw a free five yards by going on a on two or on the hard count here ucf is one of the more penalized teams in the country and five extra yards here would really help out your young quarterback doesn't look like they're gonna do it based on how methodical they've been the first 30 seconds of this play they changed up the running back edward sadie redshirt freshman is in to the right of mitchell but it's third and eight and that pass is incomplete they're saying incomplete he was trying to get at the sadie corey thornton was there for the hit and it's gonna be fourth down right here just a slow screen out to the running back edward sadie and a great job there of staying home by corey thornton having his eyes in the right spot usually the left tackle is supposed to be the first guy out there to kick out the corner first most dangerous great job of corey thornton having his eyes in the right place and had that been a catch in a fumble josh seliskar who you saw there 88 almost had a recovery and it would have been a third turnover for temple instead they punt and ucf will have it back with a 21-0 advantage and 4-14 to play in this first quarter all right so here's what's happened so far well this is dylan gabriel first for the knights and what he's done this season pretty impressive a human highlight film at the quarterback position so fun to study him so fun to watch him his deep ball accuracy averaging 417 yards that's number one in the country he's accurate on intermediate he's accurate on deep balls 21 touchdown passes but here's the part i love mike only two interceptions his touchdown the interception ratio that's what defines a quarterback how well do you take care of the football uh and you know a lot of people across the country now are putting up big yards and leading the country averaging over 300 400 yards per game but he does that and also is taking care of the football only two interceptions this is a smart smart kid and has a bright bright future playing the quarterback position pentavius thompson is in now for ucf and he gets his first carry of the night that's going to be going for a loss of a couple yards yeah you're right about gabriel though a guy who averages 417 through the air 437 for the game is also number one in the country in total offense when he tucks it and runs as well this is going to be a third in long so now temple if they can get off the field here and get this ball back quickly [Applause] gabriel airs it out has a man and it's just overthrown jacob harris had a step and could not haul it in well dylan gabriel again to the field finds the one on one and he fights kamiri brown the young db for temple and that's just a mismatch that gabriel is going to take advantage of all day and i'll tell you as a former quarterback we always say hey that guy should have caught the ball the receiver should always catch the ball i think jacob harris would tell you there uh that he should have came down with that one just outside the reach of the big six five receiver andrew osteen punts from the middle of his own end zone and willie erdman is back to return for temple here back fell into his 35-yard line earman takes a hit at the 40-yard line [Applause] and that was by richie grant on special teams and it'll be temple football nice job to get that three and out especially deep in ucf territory they didn't get a first down so it's pretty good field position here again for temple now yeah temple has to play the field position battle tonight you know you can't get caught up when you're playing ucf with their offense and scoreboard watching sometimes you've got to take the small kind of moral victories of flipping the field just like they did there and what did we hear from offensive coordinator for temple mike grimovich she said you know if we get the ball over midfield you know we're thinking possibly four downs a lot of time because that's the only way you're gonna be able to beat this team so there they are they're on 41. onassis neely's in the backfield at the running back spot now he gets his first carry of the night for temple or check it no yeah it's really bad part of me roy's back in neely is the other back he's a redshirt freshman that we will potentially see tonight we already saw sadie and then kyle dobbins as a sophomore so there's your four in the running back uh by committee room right now yeah and it's going to be a lot of tavon ruli as you've seen but it's also got to be a lot of of rial mitchell i would expect real mitchell uh to be the second leading rusher in terms of at least attempts tonight as they take advantage of trying to get an extra hat in the box second down play fake and a flag is thrown in the catch is made by jaden blue and he gets inside the ucf 40-yard line for a first down derek gaines on the tackle but we'll check the flag on the far side of the field at the 45-yard line offside defense number 14. that penalty is declined result of the play first down and temple has entered ucf territory for the first time tonight a little rpo action run pass option and that's going to be really prevalent for the game plan and really moving forward as long as real's a quarterback you know you're isolating a defender on the defensive side of the ball and basically making him choose and if he sucks up on the run when you put it in the running backs belly then you rip it right behind him right there like he did for a good accurate slam pass first down mitchell's pass sails it over the head of blue incomplete but there again is some of the uh concerns again another run pass option for his young quarterback you can see blue was open just really the mechanics in the lower body of real mitchell there still young still growing so much as a passer mechanically from the feet up playing the position and learning to play in it the right way and how much your feet are depending upon the accuracy of the ball trying to get that pass out quickly to devon fox the ruling on the field is an incomplete passage please third down now that was forward but into the turf so now third down and ten and again you're thinking potentially four down territory so you don't need it all here on this play yeah i wouldn't be surprised to see maybe a drawl or a screen to get them into maybe a fourth and five or less i think this is two down territory for mike urimovic and so maybe a short pass screen to draw something that can give them a high percentage chance of getting it on fourth down [Applause] mitchell with time it has a man it's blue when he makes the catch inside the 15-yard line that was huge on third down and 10. jayden blue gets down to the 12. well they do the exact opposite they put the ball in the right hand of their quarterback and you're going to see the quarterback is eyeing the safety right there and as real mitchell goes through his progression he sees him stay right there in the middle inside the hash and he puts it perfectly for jaden blue two yards outside the hash good job of holding that safety inside the middle of that hash middle of the field movement on the ucf front and flags are thrown offside defense number 52 five-yard penalty first down well you called it they've gotten a couple penalties now on the knights as you look at what jaden blue has done here this season and last season especially too look at that 95 for 1067 yards single season school records in both there and you know he's been playing hurt too he's not at 100 right now so credit him just to be out there for temple and competing the way he has let's see one on one everywhere at the top and bottom of the screen keeper flag is thrown mitchell is upended and will get this call so we've got a few flags here illegal formation offense five men in the backfield five-yard penalty first down yeah so temple's gonna give it right back they're really daring real mitchell to throw the ball down here in the red zone when you see that many hats defensively in the box i mean they they are just saying hey we'll give up the 50-50 fade ball uh instead of uh not putting an extra hat there in the box see if they do it again blue is back in in the slot to the bottom of the screen in motion goes jose barbone mitchell looks over that direction barbone's got the catch flag again as he gets down to the five-yard line combination tackles there by richie grant and aaron robinson he was thrown this was thrown late by the side judge i wonder if it's going to be offensive pass interference on almost like an illegal pick play because that's what it was coming out of the backfield on the motion many times you see that outside receiver just run it toward the inside defender and he just gets in the way and oftentimes if you create too much contact uh the referee will will basically just throw a flag and say hey opi you gotta you gotta just get in the way without making too much contact i think that's what it's going to be pass interference offense number one the goal was caught beyond the line of scrimmage 15-yard penalty first down yeah you're all over it hudson yeah you'll see this right here the motion i put you in this chico and the outside receiver right there is trying to create a pick and geez that is uh i don't know nearly as bad as what i thought i saw with the naked eye that is not offensive past interference by any means it was not and they called it on brandon mack i mean that was the guy right number one but that's a tough call for temple first down and 25 now mitchell and that's into the turf as he was facing pressure yet again you could hear the sideline mike pick up brandon mack saying i didn't even touch him and he's exactly right well that's exactly what you were saying to do you know just try to take that defender out of the play but i don't think i so he did his job that's exactly how you coach the guys make the defender go over the top and then you've got enough separation that's all you're trying to do i don't understand that call at all 33 kyle davids is now in the backfield for the first time tonight for temple on the second down and 25. mitchell motions him out the pass over the middle is caught and a good job there on the reception down to the 15-yard line still just a little bit shy of the first down on the grab there by brandon mack the first quarter is winding down derek gaines on the tackle now it's third and short oh excuse me third and twelve yeah it's almost back to the original line of scripture it's third and twelve after that catch rule he's back in for temple in the backfield and that was gonna be the end of the first quarter of action so it's been all ucf here they've got a fumble an interception that they've turned into points and a 65-yard drive touchdowns by anderson two by mcrae 21-zip knights we're back to orlando with a second quarter after this [Music] quarter tonight from orlando mike corey hudson mason for an espn college football presented by dr pepper here's rock carry in the temple owls look at the drives now you think this is two downs here because the field goal is not going to help you obviously in this game yeah i do i think mikey uremovich calls this as though it's two down territory and let's see what randy shannon defense coordinator for ucf decides to dial up is it going to be pressure tavon really on the carry on a third down and 12. that's not going to help too much as eric gilliard was there on the tackle in fact it's not gonna get anything so let's see will they go for the field goal attempt yeah i mean i try to get some points on the board i can understand it it's just it's tough when you play this ucf team and they're driving in touchdowns and this will be a 30-yard attempt for rory bell he's 2-2 on the season true freshman at wilmington ohio longest of the year is 26. this is a 30-yard attempt and the kick is right down the middle so count it and temple is on the board 40 seconds into the second quarter how about we recap the first quarter it was all nice yeah this was the first fluke kind of strip sack from gill yard incredibly instinctual play there to rip it out of riel's hands quick sudden change turns it to mcrae for a touchdown that was the first score the very next possession the other fluke turnover this time the ucf defender tatum bethune the other linebacker intercepts it quick sudden change again running back touchdown odor sanderson and then how many times here does marla williams stay up four times explosive play which leads again to a red zone running touchdown for this night's offense it's been the story of short fields created for the offense by the turnovers of the defense [Music] and this is a ucf team under coach hypel here now in his third season that is trying to break an fbs record in terms of offense they're averaging 652 and a half yards per game number one in the nation the record is 624.9 set by houston back in 1989 brian o'keefe on the return for ucf and gets up close to the 25-yard line sunday nfl countdown comes your way tomorrow 10 a.m eastern the countdown crew on espn the app we've had record-setting comebacks across the league they'll explore that plus the mystery of momentum plus the best miced up moments for the season's first half and as always all the early breaking stories injury updates and a preview of each game right up until kickoff sunday nfl countdown tomorrow at 10 a.m eastern otis anderson is the running back here on this series as ucf starts from their own 23-yard line anderson gets the call stays on his feet that's a first down run up across the 35 to the 36 a game to 13 yards arnold abacadi on the tackle for temple that's the missed tackle that's plaguing this defense the linebacker there to make the play but can't wrap him up look how fast that this next play comes off in and this pass is caught across midfield from gabriel and he finds his target jaylen robinson there is a flag down though back at the 32-yard line [Music] [Applause] i'm gonna call hold and that's gonna negate that first down catch cole schneider the left guard in his 33rd game of his career 30 second start tonight he's been very consistent junior out of fort myers florida and you've got to have a good offensive line to run this kind of offense i mean talk about how great they are in the past they're so good in the run as well 16th best in the nation in terms of rushing as well yeah the skill position players get a lot of call but these guys out front is what makes it go gabriel williams is the intended target and knocked away by amir tyler outstanding defensive play of the temple senior safety yeah we talked to him this week i mean he is ready for this secondary in the challenge presented to them today and he makes a great play there gets his hand involved in it they're playing cover zero which means no safety in the middle of the field and so amir really saves the day from an explosive 80 yard touchdown if he wasn't able to deflect that ball he's really done a nice job throughout his career tyler's been through a lot he's got his academics on track he's gonna do mcl and meniscus surgeries steady force back there gabriel's pass caught by williams passes and out of bounds of the 34-yard line right in front of tyler but a good job to keep him in front it's gonna be a third and long here yeah this is where arnold epicady your best pass rusher for temple needs to get pressure he's the leading captain right here can he get pressure and force this ucf offense to punt back third and 12. four wide receivers set robinson on the bottom by himself the pass is into the third incomplete good pressure and again good coverage by temple on this series so now all of a sudden temple's starting to get into their own a little bit they force a three and out deep in ucf territory they stop them here they're going to get this ball back on a pun in fourth down and 12. yeah the penalty definitely helped the the holding penalty pushed ucf back uh and then there on third down the key is getting getting to the quarterback with only four that's what you have to be able to do against his ucf offenses get pressure up front with your four down lineman there's the punt from andrew osteen as willie erdman calls for the fair catch and temple will have it just across their own 30-yard line when we come back down 21-3 here early second quarter but we've got a flag down on the play let's hang on for a second oh no there is no flag down so it'll be temple ball when we come back stay tuned coaching stop for rod carry who was at northern illinois for six years and took them to five bowl games as the head coach and four mack west division titles two mac championship games and then comes here to temple and then last year they go eight and five we go to the bowl game for the fifth straight year former center at indiana back from 90 to 93. congratulations to indiana today as they're 4-0 after a 24-0 win over michigan state here's a pass from mitchell looking on the outside from mack and now there was a flag down at the 32 yard line the line of scrimmage on this first down play illegal formation offense five men in the backfield five year penalty first down and that's the second time that's happened tonight yeah two receivers down here to the field correction that penalty has been declined result of the play second down one of those guys got to get on the line jose barbin and blue are bone and blue so ucf will decline the penalty make it second and ten instead of first and fifteen edward sadie's in the backfield initial hands off to him next couple big hits out a few yards stefan zeus and eric gilliard on the tackles well here is the challenge that temple is facing again ucf defensively look at all these bodies at the line of scrimmage right here in the secondary uh and one deep safety and they've got eight or nine guys in the box every single time daring temple to throw the football on the perimeter well they're gonna have to now third down and eight blue goes in motion they rush for the knights do mitchell's pass over the middle is caught by blue the back shoulder plate he gets the first down into ucf territory 49-yard line and a player down for ucf and a helmet came off see this is what you love to see from your young quarterback standing in the pocket surveying the field throwing the ball from the pocket and a great route there by blue to widen the db make him think that he's going to outside release get him to widen and then you have all of that area in the middle of the field for real to throw the football it's a big time throw there on a third down and a much needed conversion on third down for this temple offense it really was aaron robinson got his helmet kicked off of his head by his teammate richie grant and he's gonna have to come out you know for at least a play and he's holding his nose he might get banged up a little bit transfer out of alabama and the fourth leading tackler on this team first down temple the ucf 49-yard line ruling and a flag is thrown as really a yard and a half grant attack on holding the temple how many flags we're gonna have here in this game a lot of them so far early on holding offense number 79 10-yard penalty first down it's wisdom quarcy who's a redshirt freshman we were told he was going to get some time tonight and we've seen some action rotating in at the tackle position got to miss three weeks due to covet and you know this entire team has been decimated by you know covet related issues as well as injuries and playing under man's here tonight really good strong run the ball comes out in the end i'm going to say he was down the ruling ruling down but will be thinking four downs again here potentially potentially i think it depends on the distance on on fourth down uh if not you have an opportunity to pin them maybe on a pump but it's still second down early down look for a a completion the quarterback starting to gain confidence throwing the football let's see ucf if they decide to check here they stay in the same coverage mikey rimovich feels like he's got a good beat on when they change it when they don't dobbins on the carry a strong run to the outside it's kyle dobbins [Music] and a little extra activity at the end of that play that's the chess match going on right now between the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator for ucf randy shanahan you randy shannon you are basically calling the freeze play if the defense of ucf like they did there stays at two high safeties you're gonna run it if they drop a safety in the box then you're probably gonna call a throw to the perimeter so that's a little bit of the chess match going on right now between the coordinators big third down here third down and nine for temple from the 48 of ucf 205 and third down tonight mitchell and incomplete blue was the intended target richie grant was there on coverage and yeah you're gonna have to punt this fourth and nine you know but if you think about it you know hudson two very short fields to start for ucf so that's very hard on the temple defense you can't really blame them there's two turnovers by the offense the last two times temple's defense has stopped them out and then another stop forcing the punt so the defense is starting to give the offense a little bit of you know confidence here saying okay we're gonna try to hold these guys and you know you guys go to work so we'll see what happens and a good punt here by adam berry and the knights will start deep in their own territory when we come back [Music] kind of build on what we were talking about before the timeout first three drives and the three touchdowns course of two turnovers by temple but the last two drives the temple defenses held tough seven plays just 12 yards and two punts for ucf and now they're going to start the knights well at their own nine yard line time of possession temple 14 25 to 5 45 for ucf but of course we know that doesn't mean anything the way that ucf is able to score yeah you know at a rapid pace so that's where that kind of gets thrown out the window but they are controlling the ball and now their defense is playing better but they just got to tackle better they've been in position tonight to make plays and to minimize big gains but they haven't tackled none bigger in the first half than when marlon williams broke a couple tackles and stayed up for 50 yards so they've been doing a good job of limiting the explosive plays dylan gabriel hands it off here on first down and only a yard so there we go again good job by the temple deep sorry the front seven for temple uh had to play the best out of any position group uh offensively or defensively tonight they've done a good job gabriel incomplete looking for williams and coverage was there by temple and they had both in the area along with george reed third and nine you better find out where jalen robinson is down here to the bob top of the screen gabriel it's a pressure he's going to be taken down and sacked chris banks on the sack for temple his first of the season back on the two-yard line oh i'll show you right here chris banks gonna run a little bit of a stunt up the middle and cole schneider for ucf and matthew lee don't do a very good job of communicating and passing it off and that is the pressure i'm talking about for temple to have a chance tonight it's the front four they've got to be able to disrupt dylan gabriel with only four so they can play coverage in the back end geez you almost feel like there hudson that going fast kind of hurt ucf because temple had the momentum and they stopped it herdman on the punt return and he's going to be tackled down in midfield so the owls have outstanding field position to start this drive and have stopped ucf on three consecutive offensive series the vikings have won two straight five and three bears trying to stay within striking distance of the packers in the nfc north they square up at soldier field in our week 10 monday night football matchup 80's turn 5 pacific on espn our coverage begins with monday night countdown at 6. [Music] temple with good field position here to start from the ucf 49-yard line ruling on the carry staying on his feet gets down to the 39 and depending on the spot well now it's going to be the 40 a yard shy of the first that's what really does for you he takes what should be a three maybe a four-yard gain at the most and because of his physical nature his big body he's thick in his lower body you can't bring him down with just one guy he takes a four what should be a four-yard game turns into a nine-yard game that's 46 yards on the ground now with 15 rushes for temple they've also thrown 14 passes for 83 yards so they've got a little bit of balance going on right now with a second down and one really first down and tripped up with a first-hand run for temple temple needs a clean drive you know the past couple drives it's been self-inflicted by holdings they've been in first and 20 second and 20. this is really finally after the first couple plays the first clean drive that they now have on on their side of the 50 uh staring down an opportunity here with seven minutes left to put some points on the board really again and why not it's working for you and you keep it going 31 yard line as he picks up five yards eric gilliard on the tackle they're really challenging and testing the interior part of this ucf defense cam good anthony montalvo and really the second tier of that defense at the linebacker position they're really challenging their physicalness right now yeah and what's happening now why are they able to get these runs going you talked about ucf stacking the box a lot and they're not stopping well they've got they're only get the ucf's only put six in the box and temple's taking advantage of that right now mitchell and on the catch of the 30-yard line it's going to be ruley or no excuse me david martin robertson and that's going to be just a yard yard and a half but it's a third and manageable richie grant on the top this feels like the perfect time if you're mike you're into that you offense coordinator for temple to get your young quarterback outside of the pocket maybe move the pocket here and try to create as easy of a pass on the move and if nothing's open you have the secondary threat of his legs to try to pick up the first down third and three for the owls from the 29. blitz mitchell nowhere to go and he's going to lose a couple yards back to the 32-yard line gilliard has been all over the field tonight for ucf he's there yet again well ucf watch the field pressure and he's going to peel with the blitz right here and that's where ariel mitchell wanted to go with the ball to his running back it's a great job by the secondary a blitz was on he saw his guy he's running back his read indicator and he peeled on the blitz great job there by the secondary communication of this knight's defense temple's going to go for it here on fourth down at six mitchell a lose pressure has to get rid of it and nowhere to go and it's going to be ucf ball as they'll take over on downs anthony montalvo was in there for the pressure that time on real mitchell well temple was trying to move the pocket here they're actually trying to throw the ball back across the field using a little bit of misdirection it's a half roll out here and landon woodson number 13 for ucf really kind of sets the edge and forces mitchell to get back up inside the pocket and then at that point noah hamcock and some other guys rally to the quarterback so ucf now after stopping temple on fourth down dylan gabriel back onto the field oh this anderson's gonna be the running back and they begin from the 32. [Applause] anderson and runs right into linwon crump and tackle for a temple [Applause] yard line mj griffin in the tackle [Applause] [Music] oh first down handoff for anderson and he's got some spin moves yeah he's he's electric and he can break tackles the ucf is basically coming up to the line of scrimmage right if now is playing too high defense and the safeties are back they're running the ball if they bring an extra guy in the in the box they're throwing it to the perimeter again anderson and breaks free this time for a first down and more to the 39 arnold katie arnold is going to have to make a counter move here move one of these safeties down to stop the run gabriel quickly to the sideline and the catch is made by jacob harris gabriel's pass is complete take care of harris see this is where ucf now decides to substitute bringing thompson at the running back position so it gives temple an opportunity to bring in some fresh legs along the defensive line clock running under four minutes to go first half 21-3 ucf on the second down and short [Applause] he has the first gate of eight and another ucf gabriel pressure gets away from the moment and he's going to be sacked nice job by arnold number 17 arnold manny walker number 17 and 12. two guys on the outside you see they they high rush force gabriel to step up and that's where majay and archibong in there create more pressure kind of internally when the guys on the outside make you step up and there's nowhere to go that's what creates a lot of havoc for a pocket and a quarterback when he wants to step up and he has nowhere to go team leading fourth sack of the season for evacati and it slows down ucf for the moment now gabriel to the end zone the pass is tipped and incomplete nearly intercepted [Applause] should have been intercepted jalen ware right there in the hip pocket and just kind of mistimes the jump just a just a tick wanted o'keefe third down now third and 15. pressure gabriel and it's incomplete you like the play call there for temple and jeff knowles a defensive coordinator bringing the house yeah they did and they were kind of showing blitz and they backed down this is just a screenplay here and if gabriel is able to complete it to thompson it would have been a first down you know gabriel just needs a retreat just a little bit more and put just a little bit more touch for bentavius thompson it's a great play called there by hypo knowing that they were disguising the blitz and going to back out the screenplay is a great call right there versus that 45-yard field goal attempt here for daniel [Applause] and that's nowhere close so the temple d does it again forcing him to a long field goal no good four consecutive stops powell is back on offense after this four straight stops for the temple defense the l still trail it 21-3 second quarter 236 remaining and real mitchell back onto the field all right what do you expect from this drive here well i think you got to remain aggressive i think you've got to have the attitude the mindset that you need a touchdown because field goals aren't going to beat this ucf team sadie on the carry edward sadie and that is a first down run as he's knocked out of bounds of the 41-yard line how about our qb comparison here tonight riyal mitchell just his third game first career start and then you got dylan gabriel and it's pretty equal here minus the interception thrown or the yeah the interception by mitchell yeah jeff knowles has put together a flawless game plan he's mixing up coverages for dylan and gabriel but the best part so far is they're handling the communication and the tempo of this you said brought down by number 11 jeremiah that was it the interception and then the fumble if you will that was just ripped out of his hands when you know mitchell's just trying to get into the flow of the ball game and it kind of set temple back early half the battle mike when you play an offensive plays at this tempo that ucf is just getting lined up that's half the battle and that's where the communication has been minimized and i think jeff knowles deserves a lot of credit for that he said this week we are going to oversimplify things so our guys guarantee there's no busted coverage and they've lined up and they've got their eyes in the right place sadie picked up four yards on first down so now it's second and six mitchell tucks it and runs and gets tackled down from behind about three-yard shot of the first cam good on the tackle for ucf let's see here on third now if randy shannon has a beat on what temple's been doing on third and short i would expect temple to try to run the ball here third and two a long third and two short third and three double tight end he's now in for temple that usually means running it two for seven on third down two for eight as sadie stopped dead at his tracks [Applause] frame on morris brash yeah randy shannon had a beat on that tendency and cam good morris brash just comes running free on a perimeter blitz from the back side of real mitchell not for sure if he's supposed to see that but with his head turned he probably couldn't see it anyways that's the tendency and really the film prep right there randy shannon knowing what temple loves to do on third and short time out taken by ucf and you know you could see it there with temple they didn't want to go too quickly because you know had they not been able to get it like we just saw they don't want to give ucf for a lot of time and they don't need a lot of time of course to score more points before the half so 45 seconds to go josh hypo for ucf says we're all going to stop the clock here and they still have two timeouts remaining as otis anderson awaits the adam barry punt and another great one from barry wow anderson all the way back to his own five yard line the fair catches made so tough spot deep in your own territory with 38 seconds to go i think they try to see if they can break one and potentially get some yards here before the end of the half if not ucf does get the ball to start the second half as well yeah they won the toss and they deferred i would think boring a unexpected explosive play ucf is probably going to take it safe here you don't want a freak accident to happen a pick six back up here i would i would expect them to probably go the more conservative route [Music] yeah gabriel was sacked back at his own two-yard line in a previous series when they're in this position so here we go first down and ten it's mcrae looking for room and finding a little bit and i hear what you're saying hudson just 30 seconds to go before the half george reed in the tackle and they're going to be fine with a 21-3 halftime advantage and they will get the ball to start the second half so the knights trying to go to five and two in the season temple one and four playing a lot better in the second quarter after they gave up a couple early turnovers that were turned into points we'll take a break halftime report on the other side after this college football presented by dr pepper as we welcome you back inside the bounce house here tonight from orlando the ucf knights and the temple owls 21-3 as we get set for the start of the second half hi again everyone mike corey hudson mason we were in fear of a little bit of a blowout there early and then temple settled in what was your take on that first half well outside of those first two possessions temples really kind of controlled the line of scrimmage that's that's become the biggest shock to me in the first half two sacks on dylan gabriel ucf has been able to move the ball all the way up until third down only two for seven tonight for the knights on third down so and only 34 total plays so that's really been the biggest shock to me is they've controlled third down uh they've got off the field on third down and they're really doing a great job with their communication lining up and not allowing them to create explosive plays [Applause] ucf and ryan o'keefe to get things started in this second half as he takes it across the 30 40 midfield and finally pushed out of bounds by the kicker rory bell here's our first half highlights of what we saw throughout the first 30 minutes yeah on the first drive a strip sack by ucf and gilliard short field sudden change mcrae goes in for the touchdown to go up seven nothing very next possession this time an interception by another linebacker tatum bethune another short field this time it's the other running back otis anderson who punches it in for a touchdown but temple has responded well and it's been the front four getting pressure making gabriel move within the pocket move his feet and he hasn't been able to set his feet a lot all night like traditionally which has led to good accurate throws bad snap gabriel's got to go down and cover it back up at his own 46 yard line so that's gonna be a loss and nine yeah you can see the snap a little far right a little outside the reach of gabriel but this is again the penalties on first and second down that push them back and kind of the self-inflicted wounds a missnap there puts him at second 19. and he's not ready for the snap again and the flag comes in and then gabriel's going to chuck it down the sideline and the catch is made by jacob harris another flag is thrown on the far side of the field you got one on the near sideline one on the far side a lot happening here defense number 17. that penalty's declined result of the play first down unbelievable he wasn't even ready for the snap epic for temple thought that the motion by ucf was a guy who was moving see but katie thought that the tight end there jake hescock that kind of made him flinch and so that was a good call it was offsides and dylan gabriel being aware although he wasn't ready for the snap great awareness to pick up the ball and throw it up on a free play [Applause] tabius thompson is the running back and he's going to be shut down after a gain of two so you had a 52-yard return by ryan o'keefe to get things started then a bad snap and a loss in nine another bad snap but a huge pass play and then here is thompson for two in a row and it's going to set up a third down and long good job by the temple d yet again yeah they bring the all out blitz on what they thought was going to be a run play and they guessed right and as i mentioned briefly ago first half ucf was two for seven on the money down third down this is why temple has been able to hang in this ball game robinson and williams the wide receivers to the bottom of the screen gabriel shotgun looking going to the end zone it's caught it's williams it's a [Applause] touchdown [Music] well marlon williams lined up in the slot and you get the mismatch that you're looking for on the linebacker quincu here's marlon williams right here and he's just going to kind of run right through the middle of the of the defense and dylan gabriel identifies that and finds the match up just throws it right at the back of the head of quinku perfect placement on the deep bowl there by dylan gabriel a little bit of a push off there you know by williams as that ball was coming in i thought he kind of extended out that right arm [Music] you give dylan gabriel enough time on third and long he finds the guy who leads the country in receiving yards this time for a touchdown knights up 25. [Music] you're watching the american athletic conference on espn this saturday night college football prime time presented by dr pepper 28-3 ucf over temple dylan gabriel in his first touchdown pass of the night to marlin williams a lot of stuff happening on that series it was all set up by the 52-yard kickoff return though by ryan o'keefe yeah it's been a field position game and no matter really if it's been ucf backed off in favor of temple or a field position there on a short field after a long kickoff return to start the second half you'll see again on this touchdown pass having a plan as his receiver runs down the middle of the field this safety right here is going to come back to the hash but he never gets to the middle of the field and dylan sees that and he attacks the matchup of his best receiver on kwinku the linebacker you're taught right there take that match up all day the linebacker is not looking his head's turned and just give your receiver a chance to make a play and that's the great skill set of dylan gabriel and josh hypel talked about it this week he's the best he's been around in terms of unscouted looks no matter what a defense throws at him he always has a plan and a feel for where bodies are tavon ruley gets the carry for temple means just one yard at first half think about this for ucf at least one rushing and one passing touchdown in every game for the past 45 straight games for this team that's the thing there's this misconception when you think spread offense that oh they're just air raid or if you're spread that you just throw the ball all the time and you're not physical uh as we say in the south hogwash right i mean that's not true they are physical and they're as balanced as any team in the country their stats prove it their top 20 rushing offense keeper keeper by mitchell and he's going to be taken down loss of one landed woodson puts him back at a third down and 10. [Music] draymond morris brash oh yeah morris brash been really really involved in the run game tonight he's had his eyes in the right places and this is a ucf defense that lost four starters recently that were dismissed from the program and guys have had to step up and they've gotten more reps none more than morris grash third down and 10 for temple from their own 25-yard line [Applause] mitchell and to the sideline and the catch is made and it's going to be good for the first down by jose barbone what a grab in a very tough spot well a young quarterback made it hard on his receiver barbone he was wide open he almost throws him out of bounds did he get that foot in and control the ball at the same time doesn't matter the play got called and really carries and gets good yardage on first down an eight-yard run savon first career start last week for the second of his career for the senior and a second down run and he will get right to the first down marker the 45-yard line and it's gonna be good enough for another first down i think ucf has done a good job of having a plan for the legs of riel mitchell all night there really hasn't been much opportunity besides one time in the first quarter for him to pull the ball and create some gash plays in the run game whether it's a defensive end or a linebacker or even a safety there they've always had eyes on him now edward sadie's in the backfield giving ruley a breather he has 50 yards and 14 carries tonight really does sadie for a couple to the [Applause] [Music] 47th [Music] mitchell and air mails it looking for david martin robinson his tight end could be third down at eight his bubble routes and the quick game routes have really kind of been the uh the kryptonite of this passing offense tonight for mitchell you know those were what uh coach carey came in and said the layups the layups have to be a hundred percent right uh the quick game the bubbles uh for this offense to have a chance in the fourth quarter it just feels like for them to be in this game late it's still going to come down to the right arm of mitchell especially here on third and eighth pressure mitchell hit hard as he throws and it's incomplete and he had sadie back there picking up one of the guys but there was two coming right at the quarterback richie grant had that pressure that time on reality richie graham wasn't even disguising it he was showing himself the whole time and you can see him right here here he is both of these guys right here are going to blitz off the edge with no plan quarterback's got to know that's three to one side you're hot that's just a learning moment for the young quarterback knowing how many guys he has and doesn't have in protection to pick up the blitz adam berry with a great kick and it's going to bounce into the end zone and we'll step aside just under 10 minutes to go third quarter knights well in command here in orlando next week the beverly games on abc and espn at number 14 oklahoma state taking on number 18 oklahoma in norman and that'll be at 7 30 eastern 4 30 pacific on abc and of course on the espn app saturday night football next saturday presented by capital one knights back on offense from the 20-yard line with a 28-3 advantage and 9 54 to play third quarter [Applause] gabriel robinson on the catch and can't get away from linwood trump makes a tackle for temple for anybody that questions the arm strength of dylan gabriel or the nfl scout wants to know if he hasn't played the next level just watch that clip ball's on the right hash and he throws it to the field on the time and accurate lotus anderson on the carry it's going to be good for the first down for ucf yeah gabriel has been pretty impressive for just his second season mililani hawaii same school and they had mckenzie melton and this pass on the outside is caught by jacob harris gabriel's pass is complete to number 87 jacob harris you know i thought coming in today just watching tape on him he reminded me a lot of kellen moore the old boise state quarterback but actually watching him in person his arm is much more stronger than helens was at boise oh there it is again to your point and another route to robinson who makes a move and gets away from the defenders it has finally pushed out of the 33 yard line by william that's the challenging part of this defense it's the space this is the deep stop route all the way to the field and i love how robinson works back to the quarterback there otis anderson up the middle breaking free and another first down run and more to the 11-yard line [Applause] and this is the ucf offense at work amir tyler on the tackle and a timeout for an injured player for temple this is there's some fans kind of booing here at the bounce house and i can they've seen this a time or two before and i'm not in by any any any imagination implying that you know this players this player is faking it uh evan boozer um but this is the one thing that can disrupt the rhythm of an offense like this uh and there have been college coaches before that have been notorious for telling their players again i'm not applying implying he is doing that but there have been i played for a guy at a school who uh was notorious for saying hey you know cramp cramp up to give our defense some time to uh to catch their break so all right so boozers up it's time now for our fansville college football update brought to you by dr pepper crazy day you know looking around some of these scores and of course before the week even started i mean 15 games canceled postponed this weekend due to covet and then you know indiana yeah and northwestern wow both 4-0 who would have thought that uh indiana and northwestern would have been ranked seven eight weeks you know nine weeks whatever we are into the college football season everybody's on a different schedule but indiana and uh up until tonight looks like arkansas is getting beat pretty handily by the gators story of the year for those two teams anderson on the carry yet again on first down and what is going on with michigan down 28 to nothing right now early third quarter at home to wisconsin i know wisconsin is good 13 in the country but seriously i haven't played in four weeks though three weeks yeah anderson again taken down not much happening there again so third down now for the knights there's george reed in the tackle ucf so good this year in the red zone not as good as they have been in years past hurting 83 of their touchdowns with their trips to the red zone looks like temple is going to play him man out here see if dylan gabriel identifies that takes advantage of it it's a lot of times where you'll see like a natural pick route or a rub route gabriel to robinson incomplete no flags are thrown and he had both amir tyler and linwon crump over in that area for the temple owl's defense fourth and seven he loves throwing that fade route to jalen robinson even though he's he's only five [Music] nine has come on to attempt the field goal 26-yard attempt and the field goal is good from 26 by obarsky and it's 31-3 7-21 to play in this third quarter in this season forever field goal an extra point made by participating universities allstate will make a contribution to the university's general scholarship fund thank you allstate [Music] thank you for being with us tonight wherever you are alongside former georgia quarterback hudson mason i'm mike corey from the bounce house in orlando 31-3 the knights trying to go to five and two on this season and temple one and four right now dealing with a lot of injuries and covert related issues a lot of guys out but still i think no excuses i'll tell you what to give rod kerry and his staff a ton of credit getting these guys together and you know a game plan and changing positions for guys if you're on your third string quarterback and you know what else is going on yeah they don't make excuses i mean i asked coach kerry this week i said there's a lot of teams across the country that aren't playing this week uh and you have less numbers than those teams than you are playing he said we you know we we want to play we love to play we don't look at it as an excuse and i think that's uh that's admirable you can see at times tonight that if they had their full team and all guys on deck this is a i think a much more competitive team than what their record indicates jaden blue calling for the fair catch [Music] so midway through the third temple will have it from the 25-yard line all right what else is going on around the nation here in terms of the ranked teams yeah notre dame responded really well today i thought that may be a trap game at boston college ian buck continues to perform at an elite level miami squeaks one out and blacksburg at the last second some questionable clock management there at the end of the game indiana still undefeated and they play ohio state ohio state is looming around the corner next week that game will probably hopefully it gets played hopefully that could dictate the big ten east and then out on the west coast you see southern cow won against arizona and some other teams but uh not the many ranked big perennial games this week as we thought we would see nice run by ruley as he gets up across the 40-yard line in the temple first down well the big game going on in the american that you saw there with smu and tulsa because they are vying to get into that you know the top two spots of the american to play for the conference championship game cincinnati courses 5-0 tulsa's 3-0 and smu is 4-1 so that's a that's a big game tonight in tulsa oklahoma got to see east carolina take on cincinnati last night cincinnati won big cincinnati and ucf played next week can't wait to see that game right the defense of cincinnati is really really good especially in the secondary and obviously this offense for ucf speaks for itself real leads one and that is gonna be a really good matchup you know cincinnati 7-0 now right seventh in the country there's a lot of hype around them to start the season they're living up to it how about the group of five this year yeah liberty byu cincinnati i think all those teams are going to be on the outside looking in for a berth in the college football playoff but i do believe that a liberty who's already beaten two acc teams plays nc state coming up plus a ranked coastal carolina they make a case for getting into a new year's day six bowl game mitchell's pass is caught david martin robertson on the reception a little shy of the first down what are some of the rankings for the group five that you are talking about and you know coastal carolina had their game postponed uh versus troy this weekend coastal 7-0 marshall won today smu's in action in louisiana one yeah i think at the beginning of the year we thought with some of the other conferences playing hey this is going to be the year a group of five could sneak in but as the pac-12 came back in the in the big ten i think it's still gonna make it pretty hard but nonetheless i mean cincinnati byu byu's offense man fun to watch yeah they're getting a lot of respect as they should you know the way they have played this season too and if you think about it that's it i mean just with everything going on just to get out onto the field and whatever guys that you have you're working with i mean it says a lot yeah it does and [Music] to your point i mean thinking about where we were five six months ago not knowing if we were gonna have a college football season you take that into consideration like if you're a temple fan you know obviously frustrating to be one and four but just the fact that these guys are out here competing there's no such thing as moral victories but the perspective is the right thing to have fourth and one the ball is fumbled as it was kyle dobbins and chris deloach forced that fumble for ucf now does temple get this back let's see whose ball it is here yeah good luck trying to figure out who had possession win of it [Music] ucf may have fell on it and they fumbled it it's obviously a fumble right here let's see if any of the ucf defenders robinson the ruling on the field is a forward fumble the ball will be placed at the spot of the fumble we'll measure to see if it's a first down all right so dobbins did get it back and you heard our official referee anthony calabrese so they will spot the ball where it was fumbled and then now measure to see if temple has this first down it was fourth in a yard they had to get to the 47. ucf one of the best defenses in the country at creating and recovering fumbles and with that for just finding a way to put their hat on the ball obviously right there they didn't necessarily create that but advantage just to be around it they could have landed on that one that would have been the third turnover of the night it's gonna be a first down for temple you'll take it how you get it i got a good spot and it was just a great job there by dobbins to get back on top of it i know he got it punched out and lost the ball but that's why you stick with it as they spotted it right there and inches enough for the first down and now rooly's going to come back into the lineup you know offensive linemen are notorious for rolling their eyes when their coach tells them hey follow the ball run down the field of a fumble is under further review but uh just like right there follow the ball and usually good things happen they're gonna review and questioned whether it was actually a fumble or not i mean i don't understand that [Music] calibration talk to our replay officials tonight peter foss and jack winter and john salmon great replay crew we've got here tonight in orlando clearly a fumble maybe they're reviewing the spot well it's it's where he fumbles so that's what they're taking a look at see look where that is i mean that the ball that's about at the 49 yard line he recovers it it doesn't matter where he recovers if he can't you can't get the additional you know increase in yardage here so he recovered it around the 45-46 but now they placed it at about the 47. that's where the first down is at the first down mark of the 47 but where he lost it hudson right it's it's at about the 49-yard line so like right there yeah so if you can't gain the extra yardage there's no way that that ball's at the 47-yard line it's certainly not where he recovers it so it's not there but yet they spotted the ball at the 47 right so i think that's a good call and a good job by our crew here to say wait a minute let's go take a look at it because it's where the ball is fumbled and it was at about the 49 yard line so it's gonna be two yards shy of the first down and that was on fourth down so it should be ucf football first and ten at their own 49. here's anthony for further review the runner fumbled the ball forward recovered his own fumble the ball will be placed at the 46 first down oh okay they're going to give it to him at the spot where he recovered it now you figuring out this algorithm i thought you can't i can't you can't do that okay maybe because it was touched by ucf they're gonna give it to him at the 46 where he recovered it and it's gonna be a first down yep so here we go looking at a big shot and it's incomplete almost intercepted no i think that was caught or was it it was corey fortin he fixed this interception yeah what is going on here he bobbled it about seven times but i don't think the ball ever hit the ground we'll come back and sort it all out thornton on the interception after temple got the first down mitchell goes deep corey thornton a freshman picks it off for ucf and they have it back all right welcome back to orlando real mitchell going deep and the ball was intercepted by corey thornton what a job to stick with it here the ball did never hit the turf and so ucf has the ball back at their own 11-yard line and now robert said take taking off down the sideline 40 a temple 30 finally dragged down by amir tyler and what a play for robinson [Applause] out of bounds of the 21 injured player down for temple lynwood chrome well just a simple speed sweep this will go down as a pass watch him hitch the second gear right here just split those two temple defenders that's why his nickname inside the locker room is flash you blink and he's gone world-class speed and his ability to take what should have been a first down play into an explosive play because of the speed he has i want to go back to the fumble and correct what i had said about the runner in dobbins okay if you are the running back and you fumble you can recover your own fumble and you will get it at that spot if somebody else on his team had recovered it it would go back to the spot of the fumble so see there's dobbins recovering his own fumble at the 46. so initially they had the ball at the 47. so that's why they wanted to review it to get the spot right it was always going to be temple ball because he did recover it and it was at the 46. so they need to get to the 47 he got it at the 46 a first down but then on the next play mitchell throws the deep ball and ucf gets the interception so that's that's the rule and what happened there and now we're all the way back down to the 21-yard line where the knights have it first and 10 on temple's side of the field as they attend to linwood chrome i'll tell you mike if if your career as a play-by-play guy kind of hits rock bottom i think you got a future as a rules analyst hey you got a bright future i mean we've had a lot of crazy plays here tonight right now none crazier than that one well the first play when temple had it real mitchell quarterback got the ball taken right out of his hands by the defensive player for ucf and they ended up scoring a touchdown that's how our game got started here tonight trump flipping off with a little bit of help graduate cornerback and you know if temple needed any more you know injuries and players down at this stage of the season and you know mitchell he's been thrown into a look on his face says it all doesn't it yeah it's it's a tough game to be getting your first career start you know a lot of pressure when you know the other team's going to put up a ton of points and really credit the temple defense and they're doing all that they can i mean two short fields for ucf and then they've really had two drives and that's been it so here's another pass to the end zone it's caught for the touchdown and that's marlon williams again for 21 yards out and another nice score what a throw by dylan gabriel it's a deep slant route and this guy gets jammed williams gets jammed on so watch him just hold right here for a split second take that extra hitch and just seat it in there between the safety and the hash again if you are a person out there that questions the arm strength of dylan gabriel just turn on the tape and watch some of these throws that he's made in the second half i don't think you'll question it anymore [Applause] two plays in 91 yards 27 seconds that's the knights for it the point is good 38-40 let's take a look now this week's college football rankings brought to you by goodyear and here's a look at your top ten yeah a couple of these teams that we thought were going to play today didn't obviously like texas a m and tennessee alabama and lsu so it'll be interesting to see mike over the next couple weeks uh how the committee handles this and irons it out but here's the big one right here cincinnati 7-0 a win last night [Music] and cincinnati and ucf set to play next week well in a possible rematch with clemson and notre dame for the acc title game with the notre dame in the league for this year and you know here's some notes on uh next week's game that you alluded to earlier with ucf in cincinnati wow what an appealing matchup on paper the best offense in the country going up against one of the best defenses in the country you see right here ucf offense averaging 45 points per game cincinnati's defense so stingy so greedy in terms of really being able to just funnel everything inside that starts with their secondary their run game is really good only giving up 12 and a half points per game that is so almost virtually impossible to do in modern college football where all the rules are favored toward offensive football scoring points yeah marcus freeman defensive coordinator for cincinnati he's done one heck of a job there under luke fickle head coach and you know they've got that staff together they're players year after year and they just keep you know getting better and better and it's certainly shown this season invite you to kick off your week 10 nfl sunday 10 a.m eastern tomorrow sunday nfl countdown of course all the early breaking stories injury updates a preview of each game right about the kickoff been talking about some of the record-setting comebacks we've had this year across the league we'll explore the mystery of momentum and the best miked up moments from the season's first half of the year so don't miss that tomorrow on sunday nfl countdown on espn new quarterback it's gonna be matt duncan a true freshman from somerville south carolina and he is getting his first college action of his career and it's gonna be a handoff so duncan last played in high school in ashley ridge high school in south carolina he's dressed the past couple weeks but did not see action so this is his first game of this college career for the true freshman matt duncan now the fourth quarterback to play this year for temple uh you know i don't think this is any indictment on on how real mitchell played tonight uh obviously they've are limited with with a lot of their weapons out not having randall jones their leading receiver obviously didn't help tonight uh and you know mitchell will be the first to say that he's got to continue to hone in on the mechanics and develop as a passer matt duncan now gets an opportunity to get some reps as a young guy here and show the staff what he can do darius pittman is banged up here's what happened now mitchell might be hurt uh you know hudson as he just took a major shot there you see at the end of that play where he threw that last interception yeah the ball kind of died on him because he couldn't really follow through on his throw he had somebody and that's the second really shot to the open ribs that he's taking the last two possessions remember that's hit richie grant had on him duncan's pass is incomplete looking forward to bond fox so you've had anthony russo the senior quarterback he's out trad beatty sophomore quarterback injured last week out real mitchell starting today and then took that big hit so now he is out you got matt duncan now the true freshman behind him is another true freshman in kamal gray out of eagleville pennsylvania [Applause] duncan takes off and stretches and is going to have the first down good extra effort there by duncan see the athletic legs and the ability to create off schedule here by duncan step up inside the pocket and talk it and go get you some outrun jeremiah jean baptiste right there for ucf and you know this is an opportunity for a young quarterback whether it's because mitchell's hurt or they're just trying to preserve him and keep him safe for the rest of the season it's just an opportunity for another young guy to show and get on tape for what he can do [Applause] on the carry and he has met right at the line nothing happening there thanks to jeremiah gene baptist [Music] linebacker in this position group in general for the knights is so deep eugene baptiste right there just reed recognize pull the trigger and put his hat on the ball and tackle actually which is something that ucf hasn't done a great job or a superb job by any means tonight giving up just the three points here coming up on two minutes to go in the third quarter [Applause] really again same deal jeremiah jean baptiste right there to make the stop they run to him and he makes the play this time they run to him again and it doesn't matter really if you run it to him or away from him he has the ability to make the play athleticism and skill i mean that's what you look for in a linebacker modern day college football you don't need to be big and bulky anymore be a guy like jeremiah jean baptiste that can run sideline to sideline and cover a different multi skill set of players out of the backfield three straight tackles as duncan gets out of the pocket and he's only going to get a couple of yards this time who was over there to run him out i don't know i think it was number 11. gene baptist have you ever heard of him this time he's playing what they call the rat position which you're just kind of spying the quarterback and uh we talked about it the loss of eric mitchell on the surface for this defense at the linebacker position everybody was kind of looking around oh my gosh who's going to fill in for him and tatum bethune has had a great time tonight and he's filled in well and now just get to see some more added depth to the position with jean baptiste that was four tackles in a row essentially for jean baptiste anderson's gonna let it bounce and he goes inside the 15-yard line comes to the rest of the 14. and we have 51 seconds to play in the third and ucf is up 38-3 i got to tell you one of the things that i was looking forward to tonight mike that we didn't get to see is we are about 20 miles away from the kennedy space center and what was supposed to be tonight is the space spacex launch the falcon rocket at about 7 40. we would have been able to see that bad boy go off uh and i was looking forward to that they ended up postponing it until tomorrow because of weather i almost went home i was i was so upset i almost packed my bag and went home i mean the view we have here from this booth would have been perfect yeah you are looking straight at it from our vantage point up here above the bounce house in orlando [Music] new quarterback in the game now as well for the knights and it's quadri jones and this ball is fumbled here and it's picked up by temple amir tyler has the fumble recovery for the owls well you can see here amir tyler just kind of searching the ball out and it's not you know amir tyler's just kind of at the right place at the right time the handoff went to bentavius thompson and he fumbled and tyler picking it up in his second fumble recovery of the season couldn't tell who it was but one of those defensive linemen for the temple defense put their big ball right on the ball and knocked it out excellent field position and real mitchell is back in a quarterback we'll hand it off though and it's going to be this time onassis neely took the carry the redshirt freshman and sparingly tonight is in there now picks up three yards on first hand this is a place where i thought maybe earlier in the game and maybe we'll still see it here maybe some type of wildcat package uh with roolie or neely even to just get some and get an extra body an extra pack in the run game well we'll see if we do see it when the fourth quarter begins after this timeout ucf 38 temple three on this saturday night in orlando we will be back with a fourth quarter right after this [Applause] some temple fans making the trip here to our orlando this weekend as it's 38-3 ucf the start of the fourth quarter tonight it'll be second down here for the owls mitchell hands off really on the gallery gets down to about the five-yard line a couple yards shy of the first down check out neely [Music] on that gary he stays in [Music] third and three nearly has it and he has the touchdown onassis neely a redshirt freshman for the temple owls [Applause] five yards out for the score randy shannon is going to call a perimeter blitz right here off the edge and neely is able to kind of run it right into the teeth of the defense and beat the blitz almost run it straight into the blitz and it was a good call because a lot of the defensive lineman were kind of moving and stunting the opposite direction temple finally gets on the board three plays 12 yards after the turnover and rory bell for the extra point is good [Applause] well another turnover in another short field this time for temple and onassis neely punches it in for the first time tonight for temple [Music] espn college football prime time is presented by dr pepper the official drink of fansville and in part by allstate you've never been in better hands back in orlando first touchdown of the night for the temple owls and the first touchdown in the career of onassis neely the redshirt freshman running back congrats to him as it's now 38 to 10. and rory bell will kick off and ryan o'keefe back to return for ucf [Applause] o'keefe and taking down special teams by chauncey moore nice job there as we take a look now at our att 5g best moment from today hudson yeah a strip sack maybe an interception i don't know what that's going to go down as but a turnover on the first possession a turnover on the second possession for ucf's defense all created short fields and then the third turnover of the night the bounce house interception is what i'm calling this one bounce two bounce three bounce for corey thornton this uh knights defense has been great all season long at creating turnovers and three more for them tonight yeah they call that first one a uh fumble you know it's just taken out of the hands of mitchell for the knights and that stellar defensive play here's bentavious thompson on the carry for ucf as quadri jones is back in the quarterback sophomore from out of orlando and i think that's smart so gabriel gets the rest of the night off as they are up 28 points get those guys out don't risk anything in terms of injury uh heading into the big cincinnati game next week and you know as a backup quarterback behind dylan gabriel you probably don't get many reps at practice or during the game so good opportunity for the young guys too here thompson again just a couple nice conversations with gabriel just what he's been able to do coming out of the line brought down football family school that's just what he focuses on and [Applause] feels like he had a great opportunity to come out here and he succeeded and this team more than likely gonna go to five and two when this is all said and done here tonight the expectations are so high now here at ucf i mean that's the thing third down and seven jones pass is really receptive kobe wilson is right on it [Applause] you know they go on and they win this game here tonight you know hudson i mean you look at this team i mean they had 25 straight wins you know that going back since 2017. you know they were 13-0 that year 12-1 in 2018 10-3 last year will be five and two this year i mean that's there's just nothing to sneeze at and coach hypo in just his third year would be 27 and six [Applause] [Music] 12 44 to play in this contest back to orlando after this break [Music] espn home of the college football playoff back in orlando here at ucf as temple has it they're on 34 yard line real mitchell is in at quarterback blue in motion and handoff up the middle good job there by really first down run it's a guy who was a walk-on he was on the scout team earned a scholarship got injured a little bit talking about tavon ruley this is a second career start he's battling here tonight yeah he is tough kid really is a kid that gets better as the game goes on more carries tonight than we had last week only 15 last week probably just hasn't been able to get into a rhythm because they've been playing from behind so much once again nice job at a spin move to get out of traffic and get into ucf territory at the 47th cam good on the tackle damn good for ucf and good is down injury time out here in orlando vikings and bears for monday night football as the vikings have won two straight bears are five and three and they'll square off at soldier field in our week 10 match-up it all starts with monday night countdown at six o'clock presented by subway time just after eight o'clock on espn cam good was able to walk off under his own power ucf it's going to be third and five for the owls here still eleven and a half to go in the contest defensive live for ucf all night whether it's anthony montalvo or cam good who just hobbled off on the last play really good job of just fighting blocks and anthony montalvo's a guy who's kind of just steady eddie there at that nose guard position [Applause] disruptor is what you're calling along the defensive line mitchell and a catch is made by jaden blue for the first down nice grab mitchell showing a little bit of that arm strength to the field [Music] finding that one-on-one match-up one two three feet underneath them throws a nice good accurate ball i mean those are the things that you like to see even though it's a blowout here late in terms of the development of the young quarterback and now the handoff to edward sadie and he runs for a first down inside the 30-yard line and another injured player down this one for temple this time one of the offensive linemen that's joseph hooper a senior who has started left guard over the last four games and has been splitting time with adam klein and coach kerry has come on out to the field as well already paper thin at the offensive line position only had about seven guys they were rotating through tonight i've seen that test down before that's the acl test testing that thing out that's a good sign right there yeah that's good it's a great song you know and they've been trying to grind it out you know the run game tonight you know cooper's a little bit but he's walking off so best case scenario there for joseph hooper thought for this temple offense to have a chance tonight at all they had to get mitchell's legs involved and they just haven't been able to do that i mean whether it's the quarterback design ron pulling it on some of the zone reads randy shane to give him credit he had a game plan in place whether it's a linebacker safety always key in the quarterback well in the beginning of the game didn't help i mean they pretty much spotted him 14 points early on the two turnovers mitchell dumps it off blue in the catch makes a couple of nice moves preliminary signal is face mask face mask defense number 88 half the distance to the goal automatic first down the ball carrier does not have to leave the game just a grab by the end of the helmet there yank down they'll drive a coach nuts late in the game when no coach lights giving up points ever but special goals those defenses played tonight you don't need cheap points to give up late in the game [Applause] sadie's in the backfield brandon mack top of the screen i haven't won his direction too much tonight instead it's a keeper mitchell and gets down to the five yard line the ball comes out i'm gonna say he was down just before the five-yard line it takes an awkward slide first trying to get down gotta give mitchell a ton of credit i mean he has just he's taken some big hits this is jersey i mean it's got dirt all over it here he is now but a fade to the end zone that's kind of up for grabs and it's incomplete mack wants a flag saying he was hell there is none i thought he was gonna get a flag you could see him he was trying to throw his hands up and get disengaged from devonta brown and he just couldn't he's petitioning over there on the sideline how in the world could you miss that yeah coach carey is saying the same thing he's hot [Music] third down sadie the back mitchell pressure from behind lookout taken down by cam good so he is back in and makes the play what a night for cam good they're getting a sack on the play he's been really involved in the run game whether it's assist allowing his defensive linebackers to make plays but here he is just such a high motor for an interior defensive lineman and continues to really show that this defense and front seven specifically the ceiling that they have over the next three games to improve something you got to be really encouraged about it's gonna be a 24-yard attempt here for [Applause] rory bell [Applause] temple their first charge timeout and we'll take it with them 803 left in the game field goal attempt for the owls when we return temple looking to put three more on the board here with 803 left in the game i'll be at the down by 28 but here's rory bell with a 24-yard field goal attempt [Applause] and it is through 20 five-point lead now for ucf temple offensive coordinator mike yaronovich who has done a real nice job here in just the second year along with head coach rod carey and you know it was veterans day on wednesday of course really veteran's week if you will as we honor all those who have served and continue to serve and how about this his father-in-law terry rudiger served in vietnam back in 68-69 look at that shot and also his brother matt yaremovic as well so thank you for your service both of you and the yoromovich family and everything that they have done and i'm sure had to go through veterans day on wednesday and really throughout this week uh thanking all those his brother country his brother matt actually played football at georgia tech college football player himself so football is is in their blood and then their family and then i second that mike every day should be thank a veteran day for what they do for our country 10 plays 59 yards 4 54 off the clock resulting in the field goal by bella [Applause] out of bounds kick out of bounds the offense will be placed in the 35-yard line first down all right how about this development in tulsa oklahoma as if they haven't been involved in so many crazy close games honestly over the last three four five years you know it's 28-24 they were trailing 24-7 there's a minute 41 to go in that game and this is huge for standings in the american athletic conference because right now it's cincinnati at 5-0 and there you see it tulsa and smu that's how big this game is tonight between those two yeah and then again next week you know ucf playing cincinnati if tulsa loses tonight and now they've got one loss cincinnati if they lose next week i mean you could be looking at a couple teams with only one loss in the last two weeks of the season this is greg mcrae and if you're a ucf right i mean i know they've got to be a little frustrated right i mean their expectations are so high i mean they win this game tonight they're going to be five and two but they're they're not even right now in the conversation and this is an unbelievable team you know because their two losses are in conference play they're tied for fourth right now in the conference and probably uh not probably they are they are uh an uphill battle and a climb to uh to play in that championship game but you're right i mean you look at how talented they are they're one of the most talented teams in the conference and with one of the best offenses in the country two of their games they lost this year they just couldn't get a stop at the right time that memphis gave it in both games they really had a lead right uh and they kind of blew it it was the tulsa game they lost by eight and memphis uh lost by one and i was looking again over the numbers like we said you know because of you know what everybody expects here now because since 2017 and they won this tonight they're going to be 46 since the start of 2017 and none of their losses have been by more than eight points they've all been a one possession game you look at the six losses last year they went 10-3 and those three losses were all on the road and by a combined seven points you know so i mean they're in every single game they played over the last four years and they're going to go to 46. well his last four years with a 25-game win streak by the way can't forget about that as they only win more and get more national recognition what it helps with is is a lot of the transfers that they get from other power five schools only look at it as as something beneficial that they want to come and play at i mean yes they recruit kids out of high school but there's a a hefty amount of of players on this team that are from oklahoma uh you know sec acc and they get a lot of transfers [Music] and here's what we're talking about from this season and these heartbreaks if you will now they led 23-5 right versus tulsa back on october 3rd and end up losing 34-26 and then with a big lead at you memphis less than a month ago and the missing the field goal and all that just 50 to 49 that's just you know it's hard to take right nice just eats it you as a coach i know it does to josh we saw a little glimmer of that tonight we really did where they started out fast created two turnovers got out 14 nothing got up 21-3 but they just kind of let temple hang out hang around for really the whole first half kyle dobbins on the carry for temple it's gonna be good for a first half ten plus are you are you if you're you you see a fan or what you've seen here tonight are you not saying dissatisfied you know with this victory or were you looking for something more or the way they carried themselves throughout the game what are you thinking no i think it was a pretty overall strong performance i mean statistically when you go back and look at it you know it's it's not the normal numbers that you would expect to see from this offense or dylan gabriel but i think this game was all about just winning dominating getting out hitting being healthy getting out of here and turning your attention to cincinnati next week that's a good point i mean you don't have to put up 650 yards of offense every game if you don't have to i mean it's the goal is to win the game of course and dobbins with a another run for first down but you know the bar set pretty high you have 350 400 yards of offense and it's looked at as a down night at the office here's a look at jermaine mcmillan gingerly coming off the field yeah i mean the numbers tonight temple has amassed 295 yards of offense ucf 383 yeah that's that has to be their season low they're averaging 652 and a half and they're up by 25. if you would have told me that temple would have held ucf to under 400 yards potentially of offense still for five minutes to go but only scored 13 points i know it's the end of the game now as duncan gets taken down for temple but you know say they end up getting a late touchdown here i mean it would be different ucf would not be playing i guess this way you would think it was a lot closer but they got two touchdowns on very very short fields early on so that's 14 points so now you're thinking 24 yeah you know and you never know well i think if you're rod carrie you know again no such thing as moral victory but you love the way your team just showed up and competed tonight given the circumstances and only having 45 scholarship players since wisdom korshi who is down and getting attended to on the offensive linemen this offensive line is battled tonight as they look at his right hand now another guy who's done an amazing job throughout his career as this guy vincent picozzi 76 graduate student he's a former walk-on you know returning starter right guard he's quite all positioned center right guard left tackle three-year starter he got injured in game eight last year and missed the rest of the year he's got his brother the tight end nick on the team and this is guy that just deserves a ton of credit for what he did as a walk-on to get to this status now a graduate student in collegeville pennsylvania and give him and this whole group a ton of credit and just for being out there and battling and what is a tough environment here in orlando hard to beat this team and matt duncan as well as you said oh here they're the fourth string quarterback told us this week he thought the days of playing four or five different quarterbacks were over last time he played five different quarterbacks was at northern illinois it sure does uh make some gray hairs grow on your head a little quicker than you want to [Applause] dance it out and the adjustment all the catches made by queasy evans as he inbounds they're going to say no he did not get the foot in but what a grab of the concentration by the redshirt freshman wide receiver i was about to get to done [Music] look at that left foot watch the left foot come down foot down i think that's in control the catch the one thing i was looking at was it it looked like before the ball hit his hands his left heel or his right heel might have been out of bounds hard to tell let's go back to that game at tulsa it is now a final golden hurricane 28-24 over smu that disrupts things in the standings doesn't it yes it does and the updated standings now look like this cincinnati and tulsa both undefeated 5-0 and 4-0 respectively and then everybody else with two or more losses that's crazy yeah it looks like it's headed for a tulsa cincinnati american athletic conference championship and i know uh knights fans in this ucf team next week wanna want to have a say in that and i i can't i know we can't wait to watch that game probably going to be one of the more underrated games of the weekend given that ucf isn't ranked but i'll be uh all glued in on it quadrant jones for ucf let's give tulsa some credit i mean they have been on the short end of the stick on plenty of games you know recently in recent years so so for them they've got to feel so good you know for what they've been able to do right now to get themselves in position to perhaps play for an american athletic conference championship conference feels deeper this year doesn't it i mean you got more teams at the top that are in contention and even teams uh you know like uh you know tulane and some other teams that are uh have been fighting scratching and clawing all season long when connecticut left the conference it really kind of put it at an uneven number [Applause] demaryius good ucf under three minutes to go in the contest [Music] this might be the slowest you see this ucf offensive look oh right exactly this is a sin are you kidding me three of 11 on third down tonight not that it really matters too much right now but you know that's again like just to your point you see some of the stats and you know they don't always tell the story jones keeps first down let's thank our great espn crew tonight our producer david harris our director nick young michelle gleason ryan jordan christopher gonzalez with the stats and spawning up here tonight along with dave stanford thanks guys and uh gene robertson as well in our scorebug joe sparacino and melissa ward and tim wilson with audio among many many others our td kevin calhoun thanks everybody for the great work tonight alongside hudson mason our former georgia quarterback i'm mike corey here closing this one out from orlando in the bounce house ucf gonna go to five and two temples gonna drop to one and five tackle by number 34 overall what do you think ucf let's go there now this game in the books what's coming up to them for the rest of the season and your impression of the knights in 2020. yeah i mean this is still a really good team and an electric and one of the most potent offenses in the country and because of that and because of their offense they can beat anybody anytime anywhere uh and it feels like every game they play it's really first one the 40-50 could even be even more than that wins let's run down the sideline by quadrant jones back up quarterback for the first down run what about where the temple owls stand right now well this very difficult season for everybody really yeah it's been a challenging season uh for rod kerry and his staff and just continue to fight through and again i don't think the one and four will soon be one and five record is is indicative of really how talented this team is they've played good and competitive i think they've just fell victim to not having enough bodies uh covet contact tracing i mean people want to say that's an excuse it's not an excuse in 2020 i mean it's it's a legitimate reason and i think what he's going to do with this team and he showed flashes of it tonight into 2021 they're going to be competitive in this conference well and i'll say this all right hudson i mean not calling any team or program out specifically at all i feel like there have been some that have said yeah yeah we don't have our guys and uh yeah no we're not playing we're not playing paul spawn cancel the game i mean talked about that this week yeah he said that he's like some of these teams are are canceling they're not choosing to play games because of injury not because of covet you know they may have one coveted case but then they've got 10 injuries and they're lumping injuries into covet right yeah he called teams out about it and it said it's too bad because they're kind of using that as the excuse you would never be able to do that ever at any normal seas at all i just don't feel like playing we don't have a full complement of guys well here's temple who is about 20 people down right now for both reasons like you said covenant injuries they come out here they battle their tails off and just not enough tonight against this very talented ucf team and it's a final 38 to 13 here in orlando as the knights go to 5-2 temple drops to 1-5 and there's coach carey and hypal coming together and this one is in the box a lot of big plays happened early for the knights that helped put this one away got a couple of early turnovers and they capitalized and they made it happen and that's all for us here tonight for hudson mason i'm mike corey thanks for watching once again the final from the bounce house in orlando ucf 38 temple 13. we hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone thanks for watching and good night from orlando florida [Music] esp
