classes began this week for students at UC Davis to delete play kicks off for the Big Sky Conference with two ranked teams number for UC Davis looks to protect home turf it's the conference opener next hundred sports a terrific day for college football to the best teams in the Big Sky Conference getting ready to go head to head number 18 Montana against fourth rated UC Davis the Grizz against the Aggies right here on root sports how you doing everybody along with Taylor Barton I'm Tom Glasgow to magnify the importance of this game you've got to go all the way back to 2005 to find the last time a Big Sky Conference team has won at least a share of the title with two losses so basically if you lose today you better plan on running the table yeah there's a lot of implications not only in conference but but playoffs this could end up being a preview of a game we do see down the road in the playoffs either way we're in for a real treat today and one reason why two outstanding quarterbacks two of the best in FCS football Dalton Sneed for the Grizz and Jake Maher for the Aggies and Jake is a guy that often gets paired talent-wise in terms of how he plays 200 Reese yeah not a bad day he compares him to have he's really able to make every throw and not just the on platform throw throws falling off his back foot rolling to the left setting up but the biggest thing not only the throats he can make and the place he can make with his feet but it's his mind the coaches talk about how cerebral he is gets them into every right check not just in the past game but in the running game as well on this era of dual threat quarterback don't Sneed one of the best in the country boy he can really create a lot of headaches for opposing defense well you see why here the run thread this zone read and the fake sweep allows the linemen to get leverage and now they're getting blocks on second-level linebackers and safeties there's no one home to stop Dalton and if they are he's so fast Yale runs up and then the threat of the run forces d-ends to not be able to pull rush now they have to respect the run and it allows him to set up in the pocket deliver good throws but this is probably the biggest area of growth for him from last year to this year standing tall in the pocket last year he would have tried to scramble and make a play with his feet now he stands tall takes a shot but it's a lot easier to get up from a big hit when you deliver a dime like you just did there and don't sneak playing behind an improved offensive line as far as Jake Mayer is concerned a very experienced group up front big reason why this Aggies offense is so good yeah we can talk about quarterbacks and perimeter guys all we want but if the linemen up front are not getting the job done it doesn't matter and to have experience like this where you have so many guys with so many starts under their belt they've taken their lumps last year early this year and they are getting better on a weekly basis one guy who hopes to create a lot of headaches for that group Montana's outstanding middle I'm back toward the best in the country number 33 Dante Olsen oh my he is an impact player from that line of backers spike you know everything that we have talked about some offense and defense this is one of those games where maybe it comes down to special teams for more on that we sent it to our root sports studio Angie Mentink and Michael bukka's effort from the 18th ranked we lose to upset fourth ranked UC Davis and coach Bobby Hawk has been getting substantial contributions from his special teams in the Grizzlies three wins alright so what are Montana special teams doing that's so special if you will they're just making big plays when you can make plays in the return game on special teams you change the identity of a football game you can shift momentum here we're gonna take a look at Jerry Louise McGee a good old punt return at some point in a punt return it turns into backyard football this is what happens here he's running to the right looking for Lane picking up blocks bull he sees a lot of at the end of the tunnel hits the Hall turn-ons the Jets and the rest is history the hair is flowing in the wind the band is playing everyone Sharon Jaron Louise McGee is changing the game and special teams is so important when you can make big plays just like that vid the hair game is on point he is second in the nation first in the Big Sky with 26 yards up her return all right it is 18th ranked Montana looking for their fourth win of the season UC Davis hoping to rebound from last week's loss to number one North Dakota State kickoff is here on root sports next [Music] as we celebrate the one hundred and fiftieth year of college football the Big Sky Conference enjoys a proud tradition dating back to 1963 one that makes it the best in FCS breaks a tackle on his feet today 13 teams begin the quest for a title that at start of conference play touchdown Montana is an original member at the Big Sky winning 18 title Bobby how returns you with alma mater last year looking to reestablish that tradition and the quest again starts today in California he's going to go the distance touchdown UC Davis won their first big sky championship last year under Dan Hawkins and with quarterback Jake Mayer back the Aggies believe they can reach the pinnacle again a Big Sky football picks off [Applause] [Music] UC Davis looking for more bling in 20 and 19 the fourth rated Aggies picking on number 18 Montana quite a matchup on a very nice day for college football in Davis California now these clubs met last year in Missoula the tale of two halves Montana took the 21 to 3 lead and a half time but get this the Aggies with 46 unanswered points in the second half 36 in the fourth quarter they blew out the Grizz 49 to 21 on their way the share of the Big Sky title along with the Eastern Washington and Weber State you think the Grizz have thought a little bit about that game I know Bobby house certainly has in his second stint as head coach of Montana's first go-around exceptional seven straight Big Sky titles three national title game appearances and he's looking to get this club back in the postseason this season the head coach for UC Davis and a long Dan Hawkins in his third year record here of 15 and last year's LCS Eddie Robinson national coach of the year two heavyweights who are soaking in some sunshine and we want to certainly give a we're thinking of you Montana we understand in various parts including Montana a ton of snow with more and away tomorrow September I they need the double check again September blizzards in Montana next week we're gonna be filling it there's some grizzly fans who are thinking I wonder how extend the trip take out let's go out with the Bay Area tomorrow check some things out bad on the Wilson [Applause] [Music] UC Davis will begin the opening series in this game at the 25-yard line they say keys offense led by one of the best quarterbacks in the country preseason All America first teamer Jake Mayer completed nearly 67 percent of his passes over 1200 yards seven touchdowns five interceptions not all of those picks are on him but that is an area turnovers that this IV offense wants to clean up they lead the Big Sky in turnovers who so far this season with eight when they put a lot on his shoulders in the run and pass game and checks but they're going to be very aggressive today out the gate [Applause] [Music] [Applause] now as we take a look at our mind chevy dealers players to watch pitches last week against d power an FCS football north dakota state you saw a gilliam right there on the first down play now on the ground trying to get around the edge and this will bring up and they have to do that a lot of teams open up the pass game by establishing the run UC Davis they open up the run game by giving the pass game going but they need to keep a good balance today they cannot become too one-dimensional UC Davis has been furthered 34% of its third down tries this season in G backfield for mayor [Applause] by the time open receiver first down and a catch made by Carson and proper maybe the fastest player on this Aggie squad the change smooth conversion successful before Gavin Robertson made the stock at the target the whole time he knew he had man-to-man coverage pick your best option and he went with it but a flag [Applause] the first down and instead brings up third down for the AG's they'll try again [Applause] saw the intended receiver West breeze is starting tied in a stumble a bit so instead of the first down a costly penalty as the Aggies will have to punt it away one this is where they start walking into danger zone when you are punning to Jerry Louie McGee I was in their meetings yesterday listening to juicy Davis special teams and the one assignment they gave their punter is do not allow Jerry Louie McGee to get the ball in return Daniel wheel and a terrific putter averaging 47 point four yards per punt really he bobbles it sits on top of it staring moment right there poor the griz-lee McGee secures the football this is a guy with three career punt returns for touchdowns including a 74 yarder earlier this season so that is a big win right there for UC Davis dogs need number-11 leads his offense on the field tremendous dual threat quarterback senior out of Scottsdale second season as the starter for the Grizz and last season's Big Sky offensive newcomer of the year [Applause] the first down the 12 yard pickup per spendable on the coverages samuri Toure makes the catch when the stat book this is an 11 yard completion this should have been a five-yard loss on a sack but that is what Dalton Sneed brings to the table the ability to step up in the pocket buy extra time and find receivers downfield made with a handoff and a big gain on first down of nearly eight yards by Marcus Knight arcus not as 6/1 194 pounds sophomore out of San Juan Capistrano California 303 yards rushing coming and of the game leads the team with four rushing touchdowns let's take a look at our Montana Chevy dealers players to watch Marcus Knight one of those players with 148 yards last week against Monmouth Samuel a chem 24 catches second best on the team and Eric flowers having a terrific season from his middle linebacker spot for UC Davis yeah really interesting kid he was with the defensive coordinator coach Tucker at his junior college ends up coming with him to UC Davis has played for the same D coordinator all four years very short for Montana he'd had to hesitate on the throw and then split a cam and Jerry Louie McGee and that rush putting some pressure he had to hesitate on to throw when you saw Don Snead getting getting in his receivers face and I like that that is the growth that's what Bobby how Tim Rosemont offensive coordinator they like they say you know last year he was just doing the assignments we need him to do now he is taking a leadership role on this team and not just a Manning stuff out of himself but all the guys around him and that raises their level of play Adam Wilson run away to Isaiah Thomas Wilson averaging just under 43 yards per punt I'm just let it bounce and a favorable bounce for the Grizzlies so a long field deal with as we are just getting started here on a sunny afternoon in Davis California number four taking on number 18 Big Sky football pirate sports [Music] which sky football on root sports is brought to you by the University of Montana the flagship for America's future and by Montana Meth project net not even once so cool tradition here at UC Davis these are the first year students coming out of the tunnel running across the field then heading up into the student section and there they are that would have been fun to be a part of I believe look way younger generation though because they don't just run out of the tunnel they have their phone's going live so all their friends are seeing it at the same time though they can relive it in a matter of minutes here with a handoff Gilliam as UC Davis begins its second Drive careful with play calls write your own endzone so where you could use it be more aggressive in the open field it's usually a lot quicker routes because the defense is going to be bringing pressure most of the time second down and seven this will go against you seen astray [Applause] please sing it out remove yards second down and 12 mayor from his own end zone [Applause] burping at that JS Lewis trying to bring down West priests dislodge football at the same time 8 yard pick up and see West priests are nice numbers on the season that is his outlet valve and third down situations look for him to find West often plenty of time for mayor now getting some heat down he goes well defended play by Montana punt team coming on again for UC Davis Ryder rice six six 250-pound senior out of Saturday's Montana there you see number 96 a grad transfer out of Rocky Mountain College second team n-a-i-a all-american last season he's been a nice addition of this Grizzlies defense and you're seeing that Trent happened a lot more with guys going into the portal or graduates going to new schools and finishing out their last season we may be signaling the fair catch very good field position for Dalton Sneed in the Montana offenses they get ready to head back out on the field for their second possession in this so far scoreless matchup in Davis California hey everybody Angie Mentink with you time now for where I root presented by payment West insurance a cult sends this one in the Mountain Meadows resorts crew ready to cheer on the Griz at Lake Mary Ronan Montana keep sending to your photos and use that hashtag when you do it gives us permission to use your photo on the ergo Griz from Billings tins got that one and how about this tailgate so close get so far away cheering for the Montana Grizzlies on San Diego it's a day looks like you guys are suffering clearly bread let's get you back down to Tom and Taylor guys as you thanks so much and Dalton Sneed on first down nearly picked off as he threw behind his intended receiver tight end Bryson and Deming when they go motion to an empty set here it's a zone coverage you see the linebackers for UC Davis they're dropping into a hole and as a quarterback Dalton E is trying to thread that needle but you got to be careful because in the middle and heat it passes there's defenders behind them first Venable nearly came up with the fifth second and ten this one may be going against UC Davis will you you know when everyone knows who it's against cuz usually guys are point that the other side it was MSM when when your own teammates don't even point they know it's on you that's a nose tackle Josiah sue Ani six foot three hundred twenty nine pound redshirt freshman out of Hayward California already starting so obviously this is a young man that they're gonna be banking on about three more years eight on second and five ability coming into the play that makes the smart play throw it away and get ready for a third down is rolling oh can see senior out of Hayward California was putting the heat on Snead well that was really good protection from the offensive line that was just better coverage in the secondary by the UC Davis defense there was nothing and Dalton Snead even as he rolled out receivers were trying to come back and give him an outlet but a nice job by the UC defenders to stay on their target and trust their D lineman to track down Snead mentioned early very good on third down this season converting at a 52% clip that is eighth best in FCS football and offense averaging 35 and a half points per game facing this third down in five situation [Applause] and swings it out first down and more as the grids are into dentists territory Marcus Knight with the reception out of the backfield his 10th catch this season gives them that ability to make those grabs so not only can he help this Griz offense on the ground he can help the air game as well a yard pick up that last play four running backs now back in the day it was you had your first and second down running backs and then your passing game running back now running backs you see Alvin Kamara in the NFL you have to be a three down back you have to be able to catch the ball out of the backfield and once you do get it now you're one-on-one against defenders unlike the run of them in the box second down and seven [Applause] eight overthrows Demming for trying to find an early rhythm in the passing game Dalton's need in this Grizzlies offense yeah against zone you're just trying to find two on once whether it's a high-low or it's a vertical and you're trying to just isolate a defender in that zone and give yourself two options but the UC Davis has done a nice job of collapsing those windows 37's need two four six through the air then some he has to dump it off and the intended receiver Nick Bostrom a freshman out of Portland Oregon Lincoln High School and Bryce Rogers putting on some heat and dalton's need that Grizzlies offense heading back to the sidelines as the defense continued to flex some muscle early in this game yeah we thought we were gonna see an offensive shootout and early on it's been defenses but they say defenses win championships and these are two teams that feel like they have championship caliber teams and the defense is sure are showing that early on Wilson on for his second punt as they had Thomas back to receive standing at his own five-yard line see that reverse rotation nicely done by Adam Wilson is once again Davis will be starting deep in its own territory we talked specifically the studio talked pregame about special teams and the important thing there's two early indications from Wilson on his punting pending Davis deep let's take a look at the tire Rama road to success Jake mayor traveled a bit before finding a home here but in 2017 36 hundred yards plus through the air 26 touchdowns Big Sky Conference newcomer of the year last year thirty nine hundred yards in passing offense 34 touchdowns Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and on the Walter Payton watched list for the top offensive player and FCS football so far Montana's defense has done a very good job and it continues containing the Aggies offense yeah they're they're back in the box they're doing a nice job defensively of mixing it up they're showing our safety look was you know and that's what you have to do against good quarterbacks if you show them the same look they are going to gas you there it is he reduces the as the completion West Police the first I think well you can call the legitimate pink play in this game for David robertson with the coverage am to tackle for Montana in the times you look for a guy like wes is in the red zone or kind of the inverse coming out of your own equivalent to red zone because they're the big physical target they're usually lined up on a smaller safety that was a nice route and a nice store 17-yard pickup able to connect again was getting some early pressure for read 12 tackles last week against Monmouth then usually the guy that makes a go defensively for Montana which is saying something when you have the talent like Dante Olsen [Applause] nowhere to go that time look like that was Orlando Warren Ellis who barely had an opportunity right there for a loss on the play third and the 11 they're excellent defensive coverage Kevin Robertson he was right here don't go rake it up checkmate Darien Nash number seven yeah that was just man to man Montana you see early on they're coming out they're low in the box and saying we're gonna go man-to-man and we think our athletes are better than yours and on that play match was the better of the tooth respond the intended receiver again very productive role for Davis will have don't see the Grizzlies beginning their next drive inside their own 20-yard line midway through the first quarter scoreless number for UC Davis hosting number 18 Montana from vineyards to snowmobiles from construction projects to managing employee benefits pain west insurance is more than just home and auto insurance to find an agent who can customize insurance just for you visit pain West comm /root we have had five drives in the game all five resulting in hunt says the defenses continue to dominate in this contest both of those ends to his left [Applause] sophomore good pursuit defense by the eggy's they've gotten a lot better with their overall team speed and that was something when coach Hawkins and his staff and they wanted to emphasize you need to retrieve bigger stronger guys but especially faster guys that sideline to sideline in this conference our first tent line is brought to you by northern quest Resort and Casino on second down Steve this some room to run my smooth and diving ahead and getting a pickup as he put honorary in a rather difficult position a little ankle break right there yeah that's an unfair task to ask a linebacker safety to have to take a quarterback open field one on one like that and you see it just the ability and then the heads-up ability of him to get down and not take unnecessary hits at the end of the run laser comes Marcos night on first down second down and six ahead this Aggies defense playing without a couple of key players in the secondary today starting cornerback Jordan Perry man out with an injury the same story for a backup DB and Jalen and white who is also their primary punt return but those duties to go going to Isaiah Thomas in his cutback first down out to the 45 yard line a yard pickup honorary and on the stop UC Davis where you see in Montana go a lot of this to tight end package they are wanting to control the clock way a great defensive scheme against a potent on opponents offense is to have a good run game and just control the ball on the back on Tanith first establish one for Davis Samuel a Kim make it five first downs a jam hauls in the football well thrown by Steve this is a next-level throw you want to talk about a guy that's a next-level caliber player that is arm strength that was stepping up in the pocket feeling pressure keeping your eyes downfield that is gonna be a play he puts on his high heat film at the end of the year and that might be in the first couple plays for completion that's the game for him and hand up up the middle goes to ASIMO their freshman [Applause] this contest for yard average and well look for them to come back to that because no one was left at home for Dalton Sneed if he would have pulled that and I know Tim Rosenbach is up in the press box he saw that and he marked that down [Applause] I'll be coming off of Jordan Franklin so he'll out that wash it out one play Jordan 6-1 285 a senior out to Dima California 1 for 3 on 3rd down conversions needle keep it a 2 out of 4 he puts a head down he's a bit of a load that quarterback position well that's a big trend now with QB sneaks you send the receiver in motion and it forces the defense to have to look make any changes but you saw his eyes there he knew right where he was going he was going to the right following his big fellas job protecting the football night avoids a couple of tacklers for he's driven back Chris Venable one of the Aggies and on the play along with number NSE senior out of course from California nas terrific player bumble breeze this season real leader on that defense but he passes the I test - I was down the field in pregame and he's one of those guys when they get off the bus you look at in the bouquet we're gonna be in it for a dogfight today that's a neat game at the Big Sky meetings in Spokane over the summer very humble soft-spoken young man who has no problem putting a lick on you when given the opportunity Snee boys got a lot of space and a lot of time he'll tuck it away dives forward and close to a first down he doesn't really get into that baseball slide too often here's more about headfirst off of there hey at first I get an extra yard or two but here's the the challenge that presents to a defense when you get enough let it dual threat quarterback on the edge you have to choose do you vacate the receiver and come to him and now guys are open or stay on the receivers and he runs for first downs another third and short and another conversion night for the first down most impressive drive in this game for either one this is this is Montana football you know the Finns at home are watching this and they're seeing that man and they're saying this is why we brought him back this is why he took us to a national championship and how he's going to get us back we control the line of scrimmage get the run game going open up the pass bait play and play action game and go get wins it was touched in Montana Samari touring with his second touchdown catch of the season 16 yard play what we talked about the importance of opening up the run it opens up the pass game and this was just a simple scissors route and summary wheeled it up the defender jumps the flat nice throw nice catch [Applause] during the football Branden hurdy on for the extra point let's go back to our roots sports studio Michael bumpass joining us Michael that is a drive that began in Montana 17 yard line very impressive stuff what were your takeaways yeah I liked what they did there that first drive excuse me Drive they kind of stalled out a bit and they got back to basics getting Sneed out the pocket and relying on that run game and Taylor you just mentioned it the run game is gonna open up that pass game you put him to sleep and you hit them late deep in the end zone great drive by the Grizz you know you're a head coach now and obviously we're a big-time receiver talk about the importance when an offense has different shifts and motions what it does to a defense the confusion in the backend for them especially when you have young or inexperienced guys filling in for injured players yeah when you do that you make the defense have to communicate and get on the same page and that's all that shifting does is forces your guys to commit communicate and it allows the office to see what type of defense you're in when you motion the guy over and saying safety our linebacker runs with that guy you can identify man coverage right there so this makes these guys have to be on point communicate and make sure they're all the right spots don't play Drive 83 yards four minutes and 50 seconds and we turnout around the 20 by Christoph here Roda at Bellevue Washington let's see how Jake Mayer in this Aggies offense responds it has been a struggle for them so far in this game with just 40 yards and total offense pinning to it through the air so they dog ously like to get some more front productivity on the ground same way get that Grizzlies defense guessing a little bit one they want to take shots downfield but if you look at the Montana secondary look how deep those safeties are they're really saying hey we're gonna force everything to stay in front of us you might get some completions but you're not gonna get home run shots five or six yards on the edge that's Lance man you know they always tell receiver spin out towards the sideline not in because when you spin in there is pursuit coming and you're gonna take some licks Rick the mother by Josh sander Ian Davis going to the ground and getting just its second first down in this opening quarter but something that's simple is just getting the first down get some momentum get some confidence and now they're not having enough to get on the ball the defense has to stay in the same front coverage that's how offenses get going Justin Calhoun Long Beach California Taryn Terrell was the receiver with nowhere to go and no gain on the play you can see early on Montana defensively they've taken the challenge they've said okay we keep hearing about this UC Davis offense and this great quarterback and yeah they're putting up huge numbers and they are very talented but we are very good too and we've got speed and size and strength and we're a proud program and tradition and they certainly have played that way in this first quarter who made the catch down and it looked like Calhoun rolled up on an ankle so a lower legging issue right there as you see Jared Burrell Regina out of Los Angeles and some pain on the sideline from behind the down he goes Patrick O'Connell with a sack that is a team-high third for him this season when he just gets that lowers the shoulder rips up field and that is something as a quarterback you got to know when you roll out there's pursuit coming from behind written long and this will not stop us back up running back out of the backfield now I don't think this will be one of those situations with the punter incoming nobody goes for it on fourth down more in the nation at either the FCS or FBS level then UC Davis but not with the way this Montana defense is playing right now yeah if you're not getting many yards on first second or third down you're probably not feeling great about getting any more imposing we McGee with the fair catch we'll see how the grills can follow up that very impressive last Drive Dalton Sneed got him going 12 plays 83 yards ended up with a touchdown yeah and as you mentioned always diving board to get those extra yards he's just such a competitor but then that growth there the ability to make that throw is such a high degree of difficulty and the decision-making instead of forcing a throw they're just tucking it running getting up field getting some yards and then again the ability now to stand in the pocket and deliver strikes that growth from last year to this year is real and that's why the coaches feel very strongly that he is definitely a next-level quarterback a flag on the punt personal foul against UC Davis to [Applause] get the word from the referee today Scott rout [Applause] and let's look at the difference in this game so far it's been starting field position yeah UC Davis they've had it a few times inside their own 10-yard line the last series wasn't much better Montana's getting it on their own 25 35 here 38 that is a difference it's the little things the little subtleties in championship caliber games and so far that edge has gone to Montana to the Grizzlies first and 10 from their own 38 yard line with a 7 to nothing lead tonight the ball carrier with room and good blocking ahead nicely done by Toure just caught the touchdown pass he was out he gauging his defender doing a very nice job before Venable made the stop for the Aggies 13-yard pickup that's great coaching to emphasize the receivers say yeah you want passes but you need to block that field but let's talk about the line right there he didn't get touched Burton until he was 12 yards down that field if a running backs breaking tackles outside and if he's not being touched that's the line final play of the first quarter second quarter action right around the corner from Davis California where number 18 Montana is on top number 4 UC Davis [Music] wrist fans around the world can stay up to date on all things Grizz and get a look behind the scenes with Grizz 24/7 by firing the croissants we're in Instagram at UM Bruce Lee's you can also like the Montana Grizzlies on Facebook or by visiting Cobras dot-com show us where you're cheering on the Grizz by using the hashtag go Grizz or hash tag up with Montana are those fans enjoying the weather in Davis California enjoying what they're seeing out of their offense right now putting together so far their dice drawed after the previous in games boy cut back by Sneed in another first down as Dalton Sneed and more like a fullback than the quarterbacks put the head down and got down to the Davis 31 yard line I said pregame it's like counting an extra running back in the backfield and this was a design counter this was design you see the lineman pulling he pump-faked the bubble to the left to get the linebackers to flow that way allowing his linemen to four-and-half leverage nice play call nice execution first down just could not handle the velocity on that throw from Sneed our strength is important but sometimes when you throw across the middle receivers and tight ends they can't see the ball until it's cleared the line now and when that ball is coming in with the velocity it is it can be challenging so they they're gonna have to get on the same page some of them are on the receivers tight ends I think that when he put a little bit too much hot sauce on it second and 10 [Applause] since need as his receipted nice cut back by Tori Samara touring he takes a big shot sideline that's gonna be first down and goal montana big pickup on that play is Snead and Tori connect for 22 yards when he's also letting the UC Davis defenders know hey yeah I'm coming at you all day like this this is just a simple picture out man-to-man and he just Debose the defender gets up field gets out of bounds takes a little bit late of the extra shot but he's happy with the yardage she got and Duncan hit on play on the sideline first down and goal from the 8 for Montana what's coming wide open got touchdown Montana Bryson Deming tidy and hauling it in his third touchdown reception of the season third in two weeks an eight-yard play and a 13 to nothing Montana Lee you're seeing this a lot more in the red zone you see from the right of your screen it's just drive routes and rubber outs crossing routes and against man-to-man defenders either have to go under or over the other receiver and it allows the tight end or receiver to be open get into the ends I like the diss other I tied it in for a touchdown a continuing theme from last week when Smith threw four touchdown passes to his tight ends who hauled in to a piece and receiving touchdowns over the course Damon 1/4 plus Dalton state with his second touchdown pass today 10 on the season well you saw the man-to-man and you see a defender you have to choose over the top underneath either way you're wrong Montana gets in for a two possession early price and dimming hauling in the eight yard touchdown pass Montana up 14 well let's talk about he's right here he's gonna run a drive route he's got the defender man-to-man well you've got receivers over here running crossing routes they end up getting in the wash and the linebacker has to choose over/under either way he's wrong Dalton Sneap knew right out the gate that was his target and only target nice play call design and execution last year three touchdown catches by Montana receivers last week for a fifth today so that would seem to be an indication that the offensive options for Dalton Snead evolving through the course of this season and his grasp of the offense getting even better and it wasn't that it was bad last year it's just it's just being a senior sometimes at that position could return out across the 25 yard line by Troy Spencer you make sure to join UC Davis on Saturday October 12th has the Aggies host the Cal Poly Mustangs in the battle for the Golden Horseshoe at 4:00 p.m. it's homecoming on campus in addition to parent and family weekend take part in the action and purchased tickets by calling five three zero seven five two two four seven one or visit UC Davis Aggies calm when I love it cuz both teams are putting out the same message now they're saying remember last year Dave was the saying hey we came back in one Montana saying they came back and beat us so interesting both teams seeing the same thing just like last year nice pickup out to the 43 yard line 17 yard game flag on the play I don't see it but it it's as if there is one based on he might have been out of bounds or dropped a they might call this incomplete and sure [Applause] let's take a look at it I may have a mic issue is Scott root his foot was dragging on the sidelines so once he's out of bounds he cannot come back in and and catch that ball so even though it didn't hit the ground he caught it it still doesn't count so he illegal touching second down in ten ball-carrier billion writedown by it's governor governor back in his home state richard freshman out of West Hills California Gilliam again and he has the first down on the third down carry Jace Lewis for the stop offensive coordinators are habitual creatures when they see something that works they come right back to it offensive coordinator Tim plow they got a big run on second down came right back to the same play on third and short they're just airs it out no flag intended receiver was Chris Vaughn and the defense by Justin Calhoun who might have made some contact here right before the ball got there yeah there there's some contact now if you're a Montana fan you're saying oh no that's just you know it's football let him play well if a receiver is running downfield and his eyes are looking back he's really vulnerable to the slightest touch that gets him off trial break for the Grizz 2nd down and 10 going into double coverage Dante Olsen in Robbie Howell right there so short catch you just named Olsen and those are the glue of this defense at the liner after position and at the safety position they're getting them in all the right run and pass calls and checks and they can place on third down there instead of the change move for Davis Livingston against Sandri is just a mismatch that one-on-one look for them to keep attacking that nice pocket they are intercepted Dante Olson with the pick with his first interception this season last year's Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of E his first interception this season last year's Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year and he seizes the mistake by mayor yeah he said his linebacker position you see him right in your screen he just keeps dropping and giving depth if he doesn't see the threat of anyone in front of him he just keeps backing up almost becomes like a Tampa 2 defender but the athletic ability Tom he's backpedaling and then jumping a vertical over 30 plus inches flipping his hips and shoulders and then the concentration to bring it down that is why that young man is special they take away this season for Montana and for mayor his sixth interception Smith run pass option he fights for the yard he can get is he picks up 9 on the play out to the 45 yard line was they get the counter run game established now it opens up that counter bootleg and he gets on the edge and the defenders have to make up that that choice but looking at Olson he is an absolute difference maker in every game I've seen him play 151 tackles last season a Montana single-season record night you know they talked about Olson still you know just starting last year they're saying look he's still relatively humping experience he's only gonna keep getting better Marcus Knight with that carry picks up another Montana first down Grizzlies with 12 to poor for UC Davis having some trouble in the backfield but it takes what could have been a negative play to a positive but did he lose the football he did and the recovery by Devin King maybe the best player on this Davis defense he comes up with a huge play as the Grizzlies turned it over for the first time well defensive coordinator coach Tucker talked about needing to get turnovers winning the turnover battle and they always talked to defenders pursue rap and rip so don't just tackle try and rip the ball out of his hands we saw it right there and just what the doctor ordered for UC Davis I wonder if Montana might be trying to make the argument of forward progress did you see that there at all yeah you know it comes down to if the ref blew the whistle or not and and it's tough to challenge that reverse that and for UC Davis a very heads-up play by the defense a good will rip out the football they are now with good field position to get this drive going after he threw a pick last timeout flags all over the field Gilliam the running back with a catch but this may be coming back and it is [Applause] offensive pass interference so the big gain wiped away when you see Bobby out there just it i sat in the team meeting the last couple years on the night they've come into town and he is just so high energy that the players really buy into the messaging that he's delivering and you're really seeing a change in this program from before seeing him getting there to what they're doing now like that penalty may have gone against Chris Vaughn regardless first in twenty five wide receivers screen decent pickup on first down as that pass is completed to Lance Babb red shirt freshman out of Montebello California nine yard game spike it down in 16 [Applause] William his job breaking the tackle from Jason Lewis bird and evil Evan coming up for UC Davis Sandra with the stop when these situations early on for UC Davis this is when west priests number 87 the big 65 240 pounds senior tight end has come into play let's see if mayor looks for him here the Aggies two of six on third down conversions inside ten minutes remaining in this opening half Gillian see if he can break down dante Olson a little bit but Dante tripping him up shy of first down yardage by a yard now we talked about going for it on fourth down this will be the 20th attempt to convert a fourth down at this season they've been successful on 11 and it looks like to see where they market it looks like good enough for number 12 Robbie helped in on the stop [Applause] so nobody even close in FCS or FBS football in terms of going for it on fourth down UC Davis again that was their 20th attempt at a conversion attempt lousy old coordinator said women coach Hawkins they have an analytical system broken down they they know when to go for it when to not buy percentage in their own system I'd love to get it from them and they won't that was a tough nut to crack they they won't give up their formula but they definitely have won southern Utah coming into this week with the second most attempts in the Big Sky Conference with the 11 and I think as I looked over both FCS and FBS football I think number two in the country regardless of classification was it 15 so it is something certainly unique about this UC Davis program and will mention Tim plow so they loved the analytics so what else do you like and he talked about explosive plays that is a very critical statistic for them when it comes to plays through the passing game of 20 yards plus and on the ground ten yards plus a big indicator for them so something to keep an eye on as we move forward this afternoon here in Davis California [Applause] gained by Tehran Thomas back up to Gilliam Jacob macgowran Cheney Washington making the stop for Montana [Applause] out of the way when if Montana can continue to get pressure and it's not all about sex it's about pressuring hurrying mayerle mate throws and they can do that with four defensive linemen slash linebackers and drop seven into coverage it's going to be a long day for this UC Davis office Jason Lewis got that left hand up knocked it down Davis on the third down conversions three of seven he coming goes down and it was macgowran getting there for his first sack of the season now the Eagles let him get out of Jeannie well this was this was some pressure now we talked about a four-man rush now Montana switches it up bring six men there's not enough to protect for UC Davis offensively and they get home and take mayor down and this fourth down is not close enough for Coach Hawkins and coach plow to think about going for it so we went on to punt Gerry Louie Magee at his own 10 yard line flag on the play McGee with a fair catch around the 16 yard line roughing the kicker first down UC Davis with that that is a turnover right there is no difference in throwing an interception a fumble or or that that is an absolute turnover that is a vital mistake made you got to know your aiming point coaches teach when you dive dive about three to four yards in front of the punter because not only is he kicking it from a spot but he's following through and by the way punters are some of the best actors in the world to the penalty on Nash redshirt freshman out of Woodinville Washington Woodinville high school there was a receiver and that converted to the defensive side of the ball 1st down and 10 Aggies at the Grizzlies 38 yard line well you see the three down linemen there that's called a 3-3 stop those three down linemen three backers and they can rush guys in different angles it's very hard for an offensive lineman impressive Alonso Gilliam down to about the 20-yard line he showed great patience at the point of attack and that's why he was able to pick up that big yardage yeah really you know Le'Veon Bell kind of set that precedent with running backs that hey you don't have to just go north/south fly coaches used to teach you can be patient set up your blocks slide shuffle to the side and then get upfield 18 yard game before Olson and Lewis the two linebackers brought him down [Applause] first down pick up where you see Montana defensively is saying we're just not going to give up homerun shots if you want to turn nickel and dime mess up the field in the passing game you're gonna have to be disciplined and patient enough to continuously do that and we don't think you will be three yards to go coming up Dante Olson with a stop right there enjoy Luis as well what'll be interesting are you calling this play knowing you're gonna go for it on fourth down or are you in field goal range when you feel like hey let's at least if you don't get a first down get some points on the board [Applause] what appears to be first down as he connects with Orlando Cornelis Corbin Walker on the coverage for Montana we have an injury on the field try to pick up the number four even well we saw the touchdown that dalton Snead through on that crossing route allows series 1 now for UC Davis they say hey you're in man-to-man we're gonna do the same thing to you how do you like a taste of your own medicine they get the crossing route and get a big pickup Montana up 14 the UC Davis threatening will be back Montana Lee to UC Davis 14 to nothing North West Carpenters Union is recruiting for the future of the industry learn more about a career with the Carpenters at NW carpenter's dot org Eli Alford the backup defensive lineman was the injured grizzly he is off on the sidelines under his own power in Dalton's Meade waiting for his opportunity to bring his offense back on the field but right now from his perspective the focus on his teammates on defense as Jake mayor in the eggies have put together their best Drive so far this afternoon if you look at Jake's numbers first down and goal at the 10 yard line decided clapped his hands the defense showed what they're and then they looked at the sidelines to get a new check josh Sandri there as well [Applause] impressive game so far for Bonzo Gilliam [Applause] we're just so versatile he's able to run in between the tackle box he can bounce outside to speed and then the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield second in for Gilliam where to go that time Grizzlies stacked that up Josh Sandri leading the way also governor in on the stop getting himself up off the turf as well that was a terrific play by Josh Sandra coming off of that edge he saw when you see the linemen block down block you got a squeeze he just barreled downfield look for UC Davis to maybe come with the quarterback pulling it in his own read there you go man to the end zone passing trucker mr. Sexton season well this is just he feints a slant and then braked back out it's man-to-man coverage it's actually good coverage it's just a better throw and a better route [Applause] touchdown passes eighth on the season this popular dedicated this season to his father who's passed away within the last year wearing the same number six his dad Chris wore as a quarterback at Portland State University [Applause] 14 to 7 as the eggies kept the Montana lead in half we send it back to the studio and Angie Mentink guys thanks so much grizzly fans not deterred at all though and checking in from all over the country right now it's time for where I root presented by pain West Insurance Greg checks in from Torrey Pines Las Vegas Grizz and eagles weekend remember the hashtag where I root gives us permission to use your photo on the air then we've got this one from Eric Great Falls Montana 28 degrees maybe maybe you need a little more than a booty there that looks freezing and then finally we've got this one from Mike we are Montana keep the photos coming and we will try to get him in on the broadcast guys back to you all right and thanks so much that was also the 68th career touchdown pass thrown by jake mayer that ties him for second all-time heaven death JT O'Sullivan's market 96 likely to be safe I'm pretty faded takes in his senior season week flowers who last week returned to kick off 100 yards for a touchdown but down inside his own 20-yard line terrific kick coverage by UC Davis as Dahl to Sneed leads the offense back onto the field Dalton so far in this game 6 of 12 through the air 81 yards two touchdowns Marcus night leading the way for the Grizzlies on the ground 11 carries 53 yards but Snead right behind him 51 yards rushing yeah I really like so called up to this point the play calls offensively for Montana it's been really smart strategic there you own the line of scrimmage gets him down the edge with some run pass options and then take some shots downfield when you feel like you have that's what's coming and smooth that as he releases the football and he gets it out Osmo [Applause] where you just feel like that touchdown offensive lead for Davis revved up the defense this was the first time we really saw them sprint on to the field and now on that first play flying around to the ball it just takes one offensive touchdown the spark to get a defense going and let's see if I can continue it with mr. electricity is his own in Montana circles and just like that a first down for Montana yes fun to watch an open space isn't he and Montana you want to find creative ways to get him the ball you see what he does in special teams so get him an hour out give him a bubble round get the ball in his hands and let him just go make place his first catch of the day 28 on the season Montana Venable with good coverage don't sneeze saw that right away as you get the run game going and the defense starts packing the box and you see man-to-man you got to like your matchups when you have big six three and six four receivers on the edge last year they have keen and current too and know they'd like to have them as well power Kristen tan liner is brought you by northern quest Resort and Casino second ascent flag on the play gave us offside Smith he's up throwing it out [Music] so making it no no intentional grounding on Dalton Sneed Rowland Oh can't see [Applause] [Applause] [Music] second down and five Sneed and first down yardage Venable finally getting it down on the deck Samuel again when you see therefore Montana when they feel like it's man-to-man they're gonna run a lot of crossing routes if it's zoned they're gonna run a lot of spot routes and just try and find a window at five yards and get an easy completion of first down [Applause] the projection for Sneed has asked MO and iced-over the first down and more as he gets down near the 35 yard line of UC Davis his job by the freshman true freshman out of Portland's Lincoln High School well what a weapon he's been early on this is a pleasant surprise for this Montana offensive unit you expect him to be the big physical guy but look at him breaking through tackles in the vision to cutback in the speed to get upfield 22 yard game and into the game with one catch has two on this Drive by Sneed double screen to the left instead kept it hooked up just about a yard timeout taken before remaining in the first half see he's looking to his left and when he pump fakes it gets all the secondary to go over there now he gets his linemen blocking to the right on the counter and this is what you want you want that one-on-one matchup offensively he thinks need is gonna win that battle unfortunately for Montana unfortunately for UC Davis he didn't there for Calvin my sex was right there to make the stop freshman out of San Juan Capistrano California those are great numbers when when don't sleep Montana offensively they want to be balanced there's other teams they want to throw for four or five hundred yards and doesn't matter if the QB registrated them if tallest need can get that fifty to a hundred yard rusher Ainge against a very good opponent and hundred-plus passing yard game they're gonna win most of the time second and nine [Music] by Devin King on the spot the sophomore out of Richmond California his nickname from his mom is day day as in every day is your day and that was Devin kings play a terrific tackle Grizzlies up by 7 [Music] Big Sky football on root sports is brought to you by Dave Smith motors home of the low low low prices by First Interstate Bank built for you and by Northwestern Energy if you smell rotten eggs it could be a gas leak call northwestern energy ASAP so Angie showed a photo of snow in Great Falls by the pan I believe and just to provide a little contrast such a just kind of a mean decision by the peeping everybody in the truck rights and let everybody in Montana know this is what is happening today in Davis California we're living the rough life down here huh sometimes our fight league with we have time for the de pinna party posting hot see third down for Dalton Sneed he keeps it what a terrific job the fake to ask mo Dalton keeps it goes forward has first down yardage as the chains move after the 8 yard game the run fake just freezes defenders you see number 45 there they can't move until they know who has the ball where they're going and that allows linemen to engage get downfield and block and open up run lanes nice look at it with our Toyota super-mo Chris Venable with the tracker he has five Dalton Sneed approaching 200 yards of total offense with 184 Drive continuing first in tax he'd get some heat that mobility saved the sack it was finally forced out by Nick Eaton the strong side linebacker a redshirt freshman out of Rocklin California let's give credit to DeAndre Morgan he doesn't get credit for a sack or a taco but he forces Snead out of the pocket and to the sideline for a minimal game second down and six Montana with 129 yards rushing UC Davis with 38 little bit hands on the hips for the juicy defenders to the D lineman that the ends they get fatigued they get gas when an offense is just continuously moving the chains that coming at you good time fires over the middle house and cut down inside the 5-yard line Torres at a very nice afternoon Aaron Duncan with the stop at its first and goal Montana after the 17-yard pickup but that's a threat Jerry Lou McGee poses to when they faked that fly sweep the defense has to respect it you see all eyes are on him they lose track of smari right across the middle of the field for a leading Montana with four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown well now this is where happened the big physical receivers at 6:36 4 you can just throw some jump balls against undersized TVs not a lot on first and goal ASIMO the ball-carrier you know what I like though about what Tim Rose marks doing offensively here I'm a quarterback so I look at I don't care if we're on the half of that line I'm going and we could throw a touchdown throw fades he's saying look the run game we've established that it's working for us why would we change up and we gonna run the clock thing how to manage that clock with 35 seconds remaining in the first half Haase no no the ball deflected wasn't intercepted loose on the ground boy Montana and Dalton Sneed dodging a bullet well I think every Seattle Seahawks fan from the Superbowl is gasping right there I think the Packers fans with Aaron Rodgers are gasping they're saying you're on the one-yard line that play-action fake throw him the slant we've seen that record a few times and didn't work out well for the offense for defensive back Isiah Thomas getting into disrupt that play third and goal [Applause] Montana has two timeouts sneak keeps rose short garbled up Bobby how keeping his players on the field fourth down I don't think I think they're gonna go for a field goal run the clock down I think if they would have gotten on the half yard line or one yard line he would have probably gone for it but they ended up it looks like losing yardage right there maybe a yard or two and putting them in a position to have to attempt the field goal Aaron Duncan secured tackle there if UC Davis's defense and credit they did a little bit of bending that they didn't break at the end well I think that's that's big the difference if if Montana does make the field goal of only being down a touchdown a field goal compared to two touchdowns again in championship football like that that is the difference in games don't miss Big Sky Conference football this fall on root sports presented by your local Ford dealer catch all the action next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. mountain 12 Pacific as the Idaho State Bengals take on number 18 Montana for a full broadcast schedule visit route sports.com Brandon Purdy on for the field goal four of six this season this is what we have here is an extra point every one yard attempt is good and that brings to an end the first half and like last year Montana heading to the locker room with a double-digit lead we know what happened in the second half last season in Missoula between these two clubs so lots of football to be played as we send it back to our roots sports studio Angie Mentink and Michael buckets yes fans shushing Tom right now offensively the Grizzlies scored the first 14 points of this game added three more right there but if you were the defensive coordinator can't bear for the Grizzlies you got to be pretty thrilled with how things have gone on outside of the ball yeah you have to be thrilled they're shutting down this offense I think the Aggies only have about 95 yards of total offense a couple sacks frustrating this offense according to end this quarterback who was held to have a bunch of accolades last year so if you are the Montana grids and had to settle for three the Grizzlies offense finding a groove late in the first quarter Dalton see that finds Samari Toure in the back of the end zone we're at the half at uc-davis 17 7 Grizzlies late it [Music] Big Sky find new roads and by the Pacific Northwest Carpenters Union builders of industry community influence and change everybody here along with our college football analyst Michael bumpass and heading into this one I'm not sure how many people thought the Grizzlies would be leading this past year I know it's happened before certainly not the Aggies though and I imagine right now they're in there trying to game plan how do you figure out a way to stop or limit what Dalton Sneed can do yeah I don't think you can stop it I think you just try to contain what he's doing and he's getting it done with his arm and with his feet we're gonna show it here he's making great decisions right here he has a play going looks down the field everyone's covered doesn't like what he sees there's a gap at the pocket he steps up now he has a one-on-one with a defender now to me the quarterbacks I could break ankles like that he gets down gains a couple of extra yards here a lot of patience he's rolling out the pocket eyes are down the field doesn't force it sets up in the pocket gets a few more yards diving for it forget the slide that's not what he does also let's not forget he could throw the ball nice little dime back in the end zone perfect spot on the rhythm throw this guy Sean he could get it done with this arm and his feet he has a hundred and thirty nine passing yards he has about 67 rushing yards your quarterback is leading the way with this arm and his feet don't Sneed is getting it done happy sim ball and his demeanor and he's so calm the game just seems to be so slow for him right now and that's pretty impressive so early in the season fourth ranked UC Davis well they make the most of a roughing the punter penalty on Montana dick Meyer finds Carson Crawford for the touchdown we're at the midway point Montana leads it 17 to 7 [Music] welcome back everybody at the midway point to Montana leads it by 10 just down the road there from UC Davis health stadium and take the run of it in the blue skies just a little bit rubbing it in okay knock it off right now it's time for where I root presented by pain West Insurance and Dennis lets us know where he's tailgating right there from the couch well-played Dennis use that hashtag where I root and when you do it does give us permission to use your photo on the air but please keep them coming Christine checks in two year old Jules loves the Grizz ready for a Grizz win it's a future Grizz right there no doubt about it an adorable one at that and finally we've got this one from Vanessa go Grizz from the Box halftime at UC Davis with Montana leading the Aggies 17 to 7 12 and under you get to take the field at halftime that young man may get a scholarship before he reaches the other goal line there's some wheels couple of them they're good stuff along with Taylor Barton I'm Tom Glasgow welcome back to Davis California I thought a very impressive first half your main story line what Montana did defensively they came out and they really mixed it up zone and man coverage tried to confuse Mayer did a good job of that and when the front for getting pressure like they did you can do all sorts of things as a defensive coordinator offensively a solid for his half for Dalton Smith well yeah we talked about the ability to run in the pass and getting him on the edge with run pass options but the biggest improvement his game is standing tall in the pocket and just going through reads and delivering strikes like he did on that touchdown the smart and like you did here - Bryce adem me on the crossing route but they weren't the only offense on the field normally good quarterback you got Jake Mayer coming back to Carson Crawford on the out breaking in route gets into the end zone that was a much-needed touchdown to get them back in this game and you look at the quarterback comparison the edge - Dalton Snead now remember last season in Missoula the Grizzlies with a 21 to 3 lead at half time UC Davis with 46 unanswered points in the second half I'm gonna boldly make the prediction we're not gonna see that again I will not boldly predict who's gonna win this game it's very much up for grabs I know who don't Sneed makes it's gonna get the W here today in Davis well we talked about the defense for Montana they've been flying all over the field here you see Sanders coming up in that zone nickel position coming up making a big hit and then getting pressured with the front four we see Patrick O'Connell come off yes let's the crowd know and again the pressure with just rushing for five guys now we see madarin get into the backfield and then the man on defense the guy they call the glue to this thing that you have to gameplan around Dante holes and dropping into coverage he wasn't even supposed to be that deep no one Briton them up front that's just ahead C playmaker making a play very impressive defensive first half for the Montana Grizzlies is you look at the first half the numbers 269 at total yards for Montana Davis held to just 143 yards of total offense Robbie halka leading tackler for Montana in the first half with six Olson Jason Lewis chipped in with five each Aaron Duncan the leading tackler for UC Davis he had six total tackles as the flowers hauls it out his yard-line has some room to the left who cuts it back up inside and brought down around the 28 first half rock-solid 13 of 23 through the air 139 yards two touchdowns on the ground the leading rusher as well for the Grizz eight carries a 64 yard so over 200 yards 203 to be exact for Dalton steed in the first half a very Dalton Sneed like performance yeah very balanced and that is the key for them offensively if they can be balanced they are going to be tough to stop Montana ended the first half that had thrived that resulted in us Brandon Purdy field goal in the 17 to 7 advantage speed quickly out to a Kim Samuel again breaking a tackle out near a first day this is where they talk about the growth of Dalton Sneed they give him the green light that was a run play he saw it was man-to-man and UC Davis was bringing pressure he checked out of it to a one-on-one matchup with his receiver that is the growth maturity and the confidence they have in him behind Center now 11-yard gain on the pass play Connor arey with his stop for Davis [Music] Snead and unable to hold on was touring Devon King with the coverage players to watch our Montana Chevy dealers Marcus Knight 11 carries 53 yards of Kim five receptions 35 yards in just one solo tackle for Eric flowers are relatively quiet first half for the linebacker yeah they're gonna need to get him more active looked like the third offset offsides and he's gonna go for it because he knows this is a freeway and will go to the house to UC Davis defenders were right there on the free play for dogs need so smart play terrific throw and the finish by Samuel akin well the hard count to draw them offsides now you know it's a free world doesn't matter what happens you're gonna at least get five yards so you might as well go for the home run shot throws it up two on one a Kemp is at a disadvantage there but he's so good he goes in high points it gets into the end zone 62 yard pass play 11th touchdown passed this season for his Snead his third today damn a guy who was the biggest touchdown maker from the wide receiver position the Big Sky the second half of last season with a safety right there over the top normally you would never throw that but when you know you got a free play you take a shot and as a quarterback young kids you want to play quarterback you're gonna have to take some hits I always tell quarterbacks it's a lot easier to get up from a big hit but you throw in a completion because you're getting hit either way you might as well stand tall and deliver a strike that was Nicky who delivered the strike into Sneed Venable and Jay hill budget were the two DB's who were right there with a kim and neither could wrap him off wellhow heads from Dalton's need though we talk about when you mention the quarterback with an in factor or the intangibles that's what they're talking about the hardcamp not every quarterback can do that and draw defense lines offside that was the third one today but then the the awareness to know mid played with guys bearing down at you hey I've got a free plate as I drew the mom's a G let me just go for homeruns I did that why would I throw a three yard hitch route I'm gonna get more on the penalty my drive took all of three plays covered 73 yards and 40 seconds then Montana with the 24 to 7 lead [Applause] [Music] to attack their big Aldo that returned by Troy Spencer it brings with shy of the 20 yard line well that's pretty deflating for UC Davis they go in at halftime and say hey guys we were in this position last year let's come out when the second half like we did last year and Montana conversely was saying hey guys we remember what happened last year let's go out and make sure we don't allow it to happen again and for them to score that quickly and that easily is confidence boosting for Montana and for UC Davis is it is a real gut-check today those first half 14 of 21 an interception the 95 yards in a touchdown 20 yards [Applause] Carson cropper Darian Nash forcing it out when they go here they fake the jet sweep they fake becktall nerves and person Crawford slips right out of the the jet sweep fade into an error up and a nice job defensively of staying home [Applause] [Music] that's a first down for Davis 13-yard pickup but they've tried attacking the middle and they've had some success today mayor through the one interception to Dante Olsen he's gonna have to look look at digs down the middle if it's not there find your running back on the check down there tripped up lunging second down and nine the tackles look at our Montana's Chevy dealers players to watch Morrell shaken up in the first half lower leg a injury over flag on this play the first down Montana's claiming they've recovered a football and Robbie how pointing first down Montana Dante Olson as well and it appears appreciating who is not seen with the same and that's one of the issues when you talk about the the zone read or the RPO guys can block but they can't be too far downfield and sometimes that happens and get penalized and it's like that that ball looks like he was down there that knee was down before the ball came out RoSPA davis maintains possession second down and 14 for mayor pressure come and drop the football this ones recovered by Montana and the Grizzlies with a huge take away writer rice comes up huge as his first season is it grizzly continues to be a very impactful one well this isn't a blitz this is a four-man rush when you can get home to a quarterback and three of your four D lineman got home to him you're gonna be very successful in when you're a senior quarterback and you know what's on the line in a game and you fumble and they have field position like they do yeah you're not feeling great about things obviously he felt a lot of pressure [Applause] the Grizzlies up 17 they begin this Drive in the red zone a lot of times coaches will take a shot in a situation like this with the turnover the 13 Smith the Jerry Lee did he make the catch Jerry Lee did he make the catch well what a terrific throw by Sneed and the catch by Jerry Louie McGee I'm sure they're gonna check and make sure that you got at least one foot down but look at this is what they call a sail round you've got the two outside guys that run a stop and your innermost slot receiver Jerry looting McGee runs that over this kind of a hybrid between a 10-yard out in a a cloner route but when he's man the man on a DB they're inside leverage so that's the space you can find open 14 yard touchdown pass to Jerry Louie McGee and the Grizz are rollin up 31 to 7 dalton's need four touchdown passes in this game Taylor well let's take a look here you've got man-to-man and right here useful do not let him cross your face on an inside route so Jerry Liu McGee says okay I'll fake here then I'll go to the corner Dalton Sneed sees that watches the DB and says I got that one on one matchup I'm gonna take my cat Gerry losing the geek all day and by the way drops an absolute Karen Duncan played pretty good defense on that what sometimes defense a guy you can play it perfectly but the offense just plays it better and that was one of those scenarios Jerry Liu McGee you look at his career Montana 204 receptions the school record over 2000 receiving yards he's tied for the school record with three punt returns for a touchdown and that's why they call him mr. electricity Jerry Louie Magee out of Coeur d'Alene Idaho this time we said Jerry and personal is a game man couple years ago little guy can play some football there's guys that don't get that in a season or a career and we've seen him do it in so many different phases right sometimes pickoff returns fly sweeps pass plays downfield they find very creative ways to get the ball in his hands and he never disappoints all right let me ask you to do your best to read the mind of Tim plow the offensive coordinator for UC Davis looking at a twenty-four point deficit most of the second half still to be played what do you tell your guys and what are you calling well you got to keep them calm and composed and say look you eat a steak one bite at a time you cannot give a touchdown that's worth 24 points so let's just move the chains get some points on the board and fall back home with this thing picks up the first down the award or two with Jase Lewis Donn tails and also in on that action it's like this is gonna go against Davis [Applause] Scott rout the referee [Applause] [Music] penalty against Carson Crawford so the game wiped out and you see just coming from the right of your screen getting that block and anytime you see a receiver block and then put his hands up he knows he's trying to let the ref know hey no I didn't do anything go look at me first down and 12 for UC Davis [Applause] deceivers not much there they Lewis with the jackal all day today calling Jason Lewis's name and number he has really been the unsung here on this defensive unit it's his seventh tackle equaling the team-high with Robbie Howell Montana defense has really been exceptional so far this afternoon your notice UC Davis is continuous in second along and third and long situations whereas Montana's been in second and third and short all day [Applause] Gilliam [Applause] no doing this against the Davis team that is rated the third in the country last week went to North Dakota State to take on that FCS power while they didn't win they felt like we can beat these guys if we get another crack and played a very good season opening game at Cal 1313 game in the third quarter against the Bears I'm not sure anybody saw this guy no this is a really good team that's gonna make it a lot of noise in conference play and post they are on 3rd neon has to dump it off Crawford gets the first down so the drive will stay alive good job Carson Crawford ami individual 24 catches 16 pickup and with that grab Crawford has three catches on the afternoon I think they found something special with this sophomore out of Beaverton high school and Beaverton Oregon finding ways to get him across the middle in space against linebackers and just settle and find those zones pickup to Nellis that lasts first down by the way the temp today on UC Davis with 20 maybe a lateral right there is it swung out to Livingston lost the football stripped we'll see if Montana comes up with it they have the football and they do so another UC Davis turnover and as we mentioned early in this broadcast Josh Sandra may have come up with the recovery the ball out Davis had a chance to recover still loose still had a chance I can't see the number I believe that may have been Josh Sandri who came up with it Davis eight turnovers coming into this game a high in the Big Sky Conference and earlier of course we had Mayer with that pass interception a fumble right their last possession of fumble [Applause] Sikandar this montana offense just wear and out the Aggies defense Isaiah Thomas finally bringing down Marcus Knight 24 yard games for Montana this was a statement game Bobby how it talked about it they didn't just want to win they wanted to pick the head up to the metal and go and they sure have that ball may have calmed out looks like Montana will maintain possession a possession screw our route sportstudio michael bumpass a former wide receiver what do you think of this receiving career the dogs needs been connecting a whit today to the team of four touchdown passes man I love what they're doing and what speed is showing that he trusts his guys the first touchdown of the part of the second half was a trust throw two defendants there often comes down makes a play the throw to to join the key in the corner over the top on the sideline Twinkletoes is this show a lot of trust in his receivers and it shows that his receivers are on time to run in the Ross precisely begin to their spot as neat as this dropping dimes like bards been saying the whole game Briella we timed it perfectly because Torey dropped the football but anyway one of the poor plays by Montana receive her today you mentioned that great catch Michael by Jerry Lewis McGee and then one of the four touchdown passes going to the tight end Bryce and damming so Snee by he's trying to get everybody involved including the running yeah we can do that this makes your office that much more dangerous you can't key in on a certain guy he got the tight ends get involved the run games going speed has his feet going this Montana offense is looking really dangerous right now as we see another touchdown McGee back on the board Jerry could compete McGee are you kidding me I think UC Davis fans wish you go are loading this this is feeling more like a nightmare to them and again it's good coverage you have a safety over the top you have a DB in man the man but Dalton Snead bought time with his feet falling away showing his arm strength and showing the trust and Jerry Lee McGee to say two-on-one I'll take that matchup again that was here and Duncan right there beaten once again by Jerry Louie McGee Dalton Snead with his fifth touchdown pass to Jimmy Jerry McGee with his second touchdown catch it's excessive drives and Montana's lead out to 37 to 7 we do have a flag on the extra point it was 17 to 7 at halftime [Music] all right so they're gonna go to a redo on the extra point so Montana looking at the possibility of 21 points scored in the first six minutes of the third quarter now that is the opposite of what we saw last season in Missoula when Davis scored 46 unanswered points but I think that's some senior leadership when you look at the veterans on Montana led by Dalton Sneed saying hey all offseason they have this one circle beyond speech if you have this circle he goes you know that the political speaking coach know every game is important but by the end of the car he goes yeah yeah this one is special this is big we have this one circle 38 to seven big day for Montana's receiving core cam six catches hit a touchdown touré four catches in a touchdown Jerry Louie Magee three receptions two touchdowns and Montana is Roland Tamara I'm gonna quiz you you know who the last grizzly was to throw for five touchdowns in a game I'm gonna give you a hint he's already done it today at Dalton Snead last season at Southern Utah five touchdown passes the school record for touchdown passes in a game seven that may be threatened today by Dalton Sneed with his five touchdown passes and we have 1901 remaining in the third quarter for the Grizzlies when you see on this touchdown pass this is man-to-man Dalton Sneed was waiting for Jerry Lee and McGee to break on his out but he didn't and so he kept buying time bailing in the pocket and once the D lineman got close enough he just let it rip threw it up for grabs to Jerry Liu and McGee who comes down with it like he seems to always do that was an awesome shot from the Toyota super-mo as that ball went literally just over the arm of Aaron Duncan into the arms of Jerry Louie McGee the completion to Ornelas rowdy hawk right there for Montana number as she Josh Sandra giving himself up off the turf ten yard game first down for mayor and company Thomas the ball carrier and not a lot there are a couple of yards [Applause] I mean it's it's a pretty amazing thing that we're still over eight minutes in the third quarter it just seems like fireworks out the gate in this third quarter all Montana's way by 31 there it's gonna be just shy of a first down third and one we're down conversions today for UC Davis five of the 11 finally got over and made the tackle Gordon Walker good call by Tim plow here he knew all these handoffs they kept what they call barreling down the D in pinch down there's no one home when mayor keeps the ball that was a nice changeup nice wrinkle there by Tim plow 14-yard pickup here looks like he wants to go deep far sideline has a man complete so fans are gonna be screaming they're gonna see his face guarding well there was a rule change that would have been a penalty in the past but now you're allowed to face guard as long as you do not contact the receiver or prohibit him from coming back to get the ball Josh Sandri breaking up the pass intended there to tidy and West priests second and 10 proffered oh boy he was big go by Patrick O'Connell through earlier registered his third sack of the season tops on this Montana team that's one area they want to really be more productive getting sacks generating pressure on the opposing quarterback this taco right here is more of a clothesline this is more like Dick Butkus or Nitschke for a Peralta throwback football fan back in the day same footballs not tough nowadays yeah I disagree 39 mayor good packages welcome as the first down priests with the catch knocked right there along with Dante Olson Boyd catch today for West crease we have down back at the UC Davis 42 yard line to take a break with Montana 31 on the nation's fourth rated team Big Sky football on root sports is brought to you by your local Ford dealer home of the f-150 America's best-selling truck for over 42 years and by Collins furniture bringing home style quality and value for over 80 years they love their bikes on the campus of UC Davis spent some time walking the campus yesterday that's what I've quite a few hammocks that are ready for use which I found quite appealing I don't think if you went back to Montana right now you'd see many people out on hammocks or bikes sleds snowmobiles we'll be in Missoula next week number 14 Idaho State Gilliam Oh with the carry there you go there are those hammocks it's not me by the way maybe that third one over that could have been me anyway gorgeous campus here in Davis California if they offered that as a class that would have been the first one I voluntarily would have signed up for and done pretty well in hammock napping 101 go back get your grad degree get down in seven mayor he coming that boy is up as a rule then complete it is he took up hop from Patrick O'Connell this kid is the real deal we just saw him on a play from the back end en spot chasing down a running back now getting pressure in the quarterbacks face and again you don't get credited with a sack but you're disrupting the quarterback you're putting hits on him which puts wear and tear on his body and he starts throwing off platform because he cheers you sees you field you coming he's had a big time game today sophomore out of power spell he's an impressive player there on third down as the completion brought down inside the 10 yard [Applause] and first down and goal for UC Davis Jace Lewis with the tackle but not before a 24 yard pickup at another injured Montana player going into the position of sitting up Josh Sandra well this is all Jake Mayer he's looking to the left nothing is there but his eyes stayed downfield the entire time you have to feel pressure and see downfield that's exactly what he did and a nice job of receivers you run your route but you have to know when your quarterback is buying time you've got to give him an outlet find a spot come back down the hill they were both on the same page there and get a big first down sander he's still down on the field he was sitting up now down on his back as you get a good look at Josh he's such a valuable member of that defense of a second Darius senior out of Bigfork Montana give you a couple scores from around the Big Sky Montana State Bobcats who were down early and down by a lot to Northern Arizona they have now taken a 35 31 lead in Bozeman Montana stayed up by four inside of eight minutes remaining in that game and how about this last week we had Idaho at home a non-conference game between conference rivals they upset Eastern Washington go on the road to Greeley Colorado faced a winless Northern Colorado team winless no more Northern Colorado defeating Idaho on this opening day a Big Sky Conference played 27 to 24 we mentioned that Idaho State will be in Missoula next week and the Bengals at home with a 30 43 late second quarter at home against Portland State well I think it just speaks to the parity in this conference there are no off weeks other conferences have really top-heavy the Big Sky was loaded from top to bottom first and goal from the 8 yard line for mayor when he identified the corner blitzing from the right of your screen into the boundary but what happens now offenses look over make a check that the defenses look over and make a check so look for the cornerback to bail and coverage now they're suggesting a a bit of a game of chess taking place very very much so it is a top counter-attack and think three steps ahead layer keeps it to the end zone throws the intended receiver ornelas another look at this one mayor with time in the pocket yeah they almost wish they would have handed that one off there was a big lane in that run but he pulls it delivers a strike he threaded the needle there as a receiver the golden rule is if it hits your fingers you got to catch it if you can't touch it that's on the quarterback I'm sure ornelas plays he should have all that one in five yard line and on the play this has just been tough sledding all day in the run game for UC Davis and it's just it speaks volumes to the Monty face how physical they are how fast they are and the effort there can be very talented guys that just don't pursue backside montana is flying around third and goal from the 6 we're quarterbacks like some kind of out or comeback route to their outside guy [Applause] play clock expire apparently Dan Hawkins or Tim plow thought they were headed that direction so the timeout taken said to our route sports studio and to reconnect with Angie Mentink guys grizzly is impressive on the field today Montana fans also impressive today with their where I root photo is presented by a pain West insurance they're checking in from everywhere Jenelle visiting friends in Little Rock on Little Rock I'm gonna do it one more time Little Rock Arkansas Co Gurkhas yeah root sports that were nationwide apparently and then we've got this one from Kristen grizzle um and to future Montana Grizzlies cheering on the Grizzlies and Josh checks in watching from Astoria Oregon keep them coming and use that hashtag where I routes guys back to you Little Rock Arkansas I got my new warm-up tests we've been so much easier if they just named a big block right Ange third and goal play did not for Davis and they will certainly go for it here that was a call knowing you're going for it on fourth down so you take a crack at the run game thinking the defense's assuming pass but now look first it's the man-to-man look for rubber outs pick routes and crossing routes to try and get a mess and get someone open looks to his left back over the middle touchdown UC Davis Chris Vaughn [Applause] well they get them in the back of the endzone and they went up bunch set and that presents problems to defenders and man and men because the receiver can go out in he can go straight for does it as a rug pick route and right here you get that over/under you see guys crossing you had some across and underneath now you get the receiver in the back of the endzone nice play design well-executed Chris Vaughn with a touchdown catch today that brings day three second touchdown pass this afternoon for Jake Mayer what these guys have pride and they've got a lot of fight in him in this offense has weapons and can score quick so they are not ever out of any ball game they needed this touchdown great Drive and looking there he's looking to the left his primary read was to the left but you saw it parted like the Red Sea across the middle and he came back to his outlet route that was his last option in that play that is experienced at the quarterback position with that touchdown pass Jake Maher has the second position all to himself and career touchdown passes now with 69 moving past Kevin Death probably the last thing on his mind right now 214 but some life as you look down to the Davis sideline and number nine right there Chris Vaughn who made that touchdown catch they know what took place last year I don't think they're ruling themselves out of this game you know win a game last week where Idaho led Eastern 28 to nothing at halftime well in the end the Vandals held on to win 35 27 so let's see can you come up with a turnover too can you score quickly there is a recipe it's going to be hard to mix it all together though it's need second half special stuff yeah and just take a look he's thrown off his back foot and this was a play where he Drude the defense offside knew it was a free play very heads Yvette drink all and then look at that you couldn't walk out and put it in a better spot than he threw it and here off his back foot taken a hit trusting his playmakers to go make plays that is really where he's at fault in his game last year he waited till guys were wide open this year he's saying I'll throw you open five touchdown passes in the game for Dalton Sneed three in a third quarter that still has four minutes remaining and he's back out on the field with this Grizzlies offense first and ten from the 25 that's how to Mitch Roberts who dives in brings it in decent first down Devin King it's got a deflection on that pass right there just the tip of his finger Devin came off of that cornerback position that's called a corner blaze when you're into the boundary as a DB you blitz it's called a corner blaze Dalton seats inside didn't take the sack but ended up getting batted down down in for Oslo the ball carrier and the freshman has first down yardage across the 35 they'll mark him out near the 38 yard line he's an impressive young player for Bobby housing offensive coordinator Tim Rosenbaum well you know this staff when you're in there to you you're still really figuring things out you're learning about personnel guys are still kind of trying to understand the system it looks like today they're really starting to click and understand and Jeff all facets of their offense right there and I wonder with this lead with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter does Montana maybe Dow down just a bit lean a little heavier toward the runway and start to work the clock and maybe throw even higher percentage passes when they do decide to throw and I think again in a tough position it's like the Falcons when they play the Patriots in the Super Bowl what got heated the lead was being aggressive but strategically you had to run the clock down and limit them from getting the offensive possessions that the down to nine smeet out into the flat [Applause] number 84 hauls it in has a reception for the first time today Rory Elwell third Street first tenth line is brought to you by northern quest Resort and Casino third down and eight for the Grizzlies one for dauntless Mead here you have to understand this situation yeah you want to get a first down but if it's not there throw it away get up he'll take a few yards you just don't want turnovers nice pocket breaks from it he'll try to run for the first down get around the edge he will dive and get the first down at midfield Dodi's need continues his impactful day not only through the air but on the ground listen talent matters but effort matters more in situations like that this is just a kid willing his team and himself to a victory today he's not going out of bounds he's not sliding he's sacrificing his body for the good of the team averaging 8.2 yards per carry dogs need nine carries 74 yards and off tonight [Applause] 30 left in this third quarter dominated by the Grizzlies yeah and this is what Montana wants there they're gonna still be aggressive but they want to get three four yards let the clock run and watch for Don Smith he should start being aware and snapping this ball when it gets under 15 or 10 seconds 15 seconds on the play clock rushing yards today Montana 177 don't believe that ball was secure it's ruled incomplete Teager Garcia with a hit on JLM rock on what a career he has had tiny guy out of Coeur d'Alene has made a major impact on this program and rarely will you see him i don'ti want to call that a drop I think that was a very good hit putting right on the ball by Garcia and with an inspiration he is two kids at home that have been told they're not big enough fast enough strong enough they're not this they're not that they're not at a big enough school look at what he's doing you can do it third and seven again time ball deflected that was a risky one caught by an offensive lineman shy of the first down that was the center size Sherman senior out of Wenatchee in Washington out of the sermon family that's out a lot of family members at Montana and his cousin Jacob a quarterback at u-dub I can tell you all the guys we thought would have a completion today on the Montana often say unit sigh sermon definitely was not at the top of that list but what a gift from the heavens for an offensive lineman to look up and just see the pigskin coming down in your hands it's probably gonna get some special attention come tape review time that's that's the first play on this I like boom might be asked about his 40 speed what was the problem [Applause] Isaiah Thomas signals for the pair gets inside the 10 yard line so a very nice job done by the punter Adam Wilson to end the Aggies back deep in their own territory eight seconds remaining in the third quarter 21 points scored in this third quarter via three touchdown passes by Dalton Sneed as Jake Mayer has his offense back out there last time they had the football put a nice drive together found the end zone they just need to do that four more times in just over 15 minutes a big-ass yeah it is and I think both teams kind of are happy with that series Montana obviously wanted points but they ran a lot of clock down UC Davis prevented them from getting points I got the ball back first regardless final play of the third quarter 15 minutes left in Davis California and Montana so far making a statement a statement being heard across the FCS nation Bobby ouch team very well could be a factor once again in postseason play it's only week one but they're looking very good over the nation's fourth great of team Dante Olsen with seven tackles today an interception and a lot of youngsters cheering him on from Gerber Elementary School in Gerber California sell those kids wearing number 37 don't let that number fool you their teacher is involved in this and her husband is a former Montana grizzly so that led to this connection if you're wondering why but this is part of the no excuses University program that helps encourage underprivileged kids to pursue a college education so there you go Dante Olsen got to third grade classy Gerber Elementary the teacher Carrie Spangler a good for her for getting her game I guess good for Dante I love the bigger picture stuff in this game there's so many there's so many eyes on so many ways to give back and make a difference I love players that talk about things and get active in the community especially kids from means and backgrounds that aren't as good as some others I love stories like that I'm third down there complete with the reception well this is a really good throw timing route he hits his fifth step and lets that thing fly he threw it before his receivers out of the break that's a comeback route really well thrown ball there one broken tackle away and really big the judge Sandri wrapped him up but not before the AG's pick up 21 Robbie how the safety was in perfect coverage we talked about it a few times today the defensive backs on both teams have been in position it's just been a better throwing catch there he coming boy he is drilled ball up for grabs and falls incomplete as Jace Lewis really put a lick on Mayer and we've got a grizzly shaken up in the secondary it's Robbie how so we see the pressure but that was a scheme defensively so when you see this right here watch the corner this is what I talked about into the boundary as a quarterback you have to be aware when he comes now the tackle has to block him and there is no one left to account for the linebacker who does not get a sack but he hits Mayer's arm forcing the ball to go up and that's where you see balls batted and interceptions happen that is a schematic thing and as a quarterback you have to go boundary field boundary in your cadence to identify that corner blitz good look at that from our Toyota super-mo as Robbie how cremains down his Grizzlies a big on you see dick [Applause] rubbie how shaken up on the last play on the Montana's sideline the coach's son injured by a teammate Justin Calhoun on that play well when the ball tipped everyone's eyes are up in the air going after the ball and they're not paying attention to each other and you see a lot of collisions happen like that and guys get injured but fortunately for Robbie he was able to bounce up get on the sidelines and that's a happy coach and an even happier father yeah we saw them having a conversation not too long ago and I think Bobby may have been saying I need you to get up quicker just for your mom so if you could do that that would be great Gilliam not much they're late flag comes in on the second down play we may have a penalty going against Montana Jesse Simms with the penalty number 37 well he's getting blocked and what happens is a lot of times you just reach your arm out to try and make contact to just slow a guy down and the easiest thing to grab is the face mask you end up getting penalized in giving more free yards to this Davis offense penalty takes the Davis offense into Montana territory at the 42 yard line there's gonna be a double pass proffered those deep has a man did great recovery on the play by Gavin Robertson Carson Crawford is a young man who earlier this season caught a pass and threw a touchdown pass against San Diego this fooled all 10 guys on the defense except for Gavin Robertson he stayed home that's disciplined football he is a big physical safety had played some receiver out of high school Auburn Mountain View in the state of Washington had a pac-12 offer to Arizona ends up at Montana and they're glad he did because this is a touchdown saving play Thomas the running back the intended receiver second down we play right here third and short and in this heat you're gonna start seeing more guys cramp especially from Montana who are coming from some cold and snow BAP the ball carrier on that last play and another Montana player down that's Jacob McGowan Cheney Washington freshman alright here's what we have on our schedule Big Sky football on root sports next week dat Washington Grizzlies Stadium as the Grizz play host to Idaho State and Northern Colorado they got the upset today against Idaho and she need to take on Eastern Washington the Battle of the state of Idaho to follow on the 19th and back to Missoula Eastern Washington and the Grizz that could be a very entertaining game with Dalton Sneed and Eric Barry a the quarterback for Eastern southern Utah Montana State as we make our way into Bozeman Montana again home against Idaho Weber State one of three teams that shared the Big Sky Conference title last season with UC Davis and Eastern Washington at Washington grizzly and then the brawl of the wild Montana at Montana State tough act to follow that game last year sensational football game an instant classic between the two rivals as McGowan remains at down on the turf the best part about the bra the wild is the two head coaches Choate and and Bobby Howell you know they've taken shots on social media and that you know they're recruiting the same kids they're in the same state but that's what makes rivalries great is that passionate feelings of the coaches the players the fan base and the ball of the wild is as good as any rivalry in the country I think Evan how about the job that Jeff chode has done with that Montana state program he's got a team rated seventh in the nation and they are really doing it sort of old-school style they do not have an elite quarterback and that's not taking a shot at anybody but what they do is they have an offense that works for how they want to play the game when I think all these Montana fans are watching going hey we're having a great game we're women why do you have to tarnish it by for coudn't the Bobcats the Bobcats get updated on this Lauren just a moment he's back with a first down the president 28 fourth-quarter points at home and a 4931 victory over Northern Arizona present mayor the reception this bond really catched Darien Nash with the coverage in a first down for the Aggies the 11-yard pickup when that really should have been P I there was a lot of Jersey grab before that ball got there but nice concentration he has really strong hands as a receiver speed and size matter but the strength of your hands to be able to bring it in while you're being hit is crucial first and ten from the 17 blitz coming picked up nicely Mayer with time over the middle touch [Applause] well Tom you mentioned that the Blitz when you bring pressure okay that's great but if you don't get to the quarterback he's gonna make you pay and look at that hands and the concentration that we talked about the strength he is being pulled down on that cast that was a previous play and now the touchdown the Montana brings pressure so the DBS think they only have to cover for a little bit but they had to cover longer than expected hole opens up and then UC Davis gets another big touch them two-point conversion try denied so the score really named I'm Tana 38 UC Davis 20 so a little more life on that Davis sideline with 12 17 remaining perfect throw by mayor tava serenity on the campus of UC Davis not the case where we are college football Big Sky style Chris Vaughn with his second touchdown pass of the game second in the second half four on the season mayor with three touchdown passes on the afternoon and do we anticipate an onside kick here now two point conversion was crucial because if they would have got it technically it makes it a two-possession game now it's a three-possession game they're definitely lined up like they're glowing burn on sod not bad execution no I'm very very disciplined play by Marcus well name the six-foot 230 pound sophomore he was there instead of trying to go get this ball here he's at he'll be at the bottom of your screen where it could have bounced off him he knew the ball was fine so he just moved to the side and let it go out of bounds that's good coaching teaching him to do that but good awareness by him to not try and go get the ball bob'll it and allowed UC Davis to get it I have to we're doing job is the kicker executing that there may be more to follow we'll see how it shakes out the bottom line is Montana up by 18 with terrific field position to start this Drive at the game is 43 exceptional day for Dalton Sneed with five touchdown passes three in the third quarter dumps it off tonight Marcus Knight but a loss on the play of two yards will bring up second down and 12 nice awareness from Knight though the knew he wasn't gonna get a big game but instead of going to the sidelines and out of bounds and stopping the clock he broke back inwards didn't get any more yards but allowed another 30 to 40 seconds to run off the clock DeAndre Morgan Calvin more sets in on the stop the Davis our first 10 line is brought to you by northern quest Resort and Casino second and 12 [Applause] he didn't some heat long stores it up is it nicely done on the sidelines you want to talk about a tough throw by dogs need the Davis player coming at him rolling to his right he put it on the money this is arm strength and then watched from Bryson here the toe drag swag to stay inbounds and get a big first down 14 yard game impressive stuff Demming today with two caches [Applause] Sneed patil it was really impressive about that run till it looked like he was about he was able to collect himself and pick up about four more yards there's so many plays that happened in the game that aren't in the stat book early on in the game he was about to take a five-yard sack stepped up through an 11 yard game guys stay in bounce to keep the clock running there's so many plays that good teams guys make unselfish place and second down and three well done by the Aggies defense to snuff that out no linebacker Eric flowers guy describes the glue to this defense again on the tackle along with another linebacker Brandon Jamison third down and three and this is the situation where Montana likes getting Dalton's need in that run-pass option where if nothing's there you can run it it keeps a clock going if something's there you can get a nice easy foundation good before tonight is the first down though and the chains will move and look from our angle anyway he got the first down that changed our movie he didn't pick it up and again I go back to giving credit to Tim Rosenbaum in this offensive staff there they're being disciplined themselves sometimes coaches try and get ahead of themselves are over creative and they try and reinvent the wheel if you're establishing control the line of scrimmage and running the ball stayed in the middle that's awesome Oh Rodgers the freshman Montana is in the EQC red zone and that was dalton avian heads up he saw that UC davis tried to get a different personnel group in and very much aaron rodgers esque you're aware of that as a freshman quarterback or inexperienced you don't see those kind of things your mind is going 100 miles an hour a vet Trin elder quarterback sees the game at a slower speed picks up on those things we saw the touchdown pass on the free play now we see him getting free five yards both sides the football to the both of this game took a little while for the Prince to find their rhythm offensively but once they did look at putting the Aggies player on his back his goal after the 11 yard pickup seems like every year Montana has a guy that just kind of emerges as a fan favorite and a playmaker that no one expected a running back or receiver well I think this young man is making a his mark on this program today we've seen him play after play lowering his head barrel in his shoulder and he's carrying three four defenders on his back every run at a lick on Aaron Duncan for Gary's for nikah Osmo for 28 yards can go from the five-night up the middle touchdown Montana just short of the goal line and that may not be the worst thing for Montana yeah and they might try and get up on the ball real quick and just snap it and get in the end zone here Knight does he get in this time he does touchdown Montana Marcus Knight I'm wondering though it did you see Davis get a timeout in how about that the previous play not that play the previous play being reviewed to see if it was a touchdown as night has just rushed for a touchdown so that play had been blown dead a replay and a replay review of the previous run by night and again just a nice job up front by the big guys just getting held on hat I think he's in it looks like when he's rolling his back shoulder it depends if his knees down here his knee is down he was just short so I'm gonna be on about the one-yard line terrific call by the officials on the field well this really bails UC Davis out because Montana had then rushed and hurried on the ball and gotten into the end zone so it allows them defensively to get some water to their guys the big big tackles and ends get their breath and now try and make the ball instant and replay by the way is seeing what you're seeing a few seconds later so well we can unofficially reach our own conclusion yep now the replay booth has taken a little more time because they're getting it a little later than we get it let me say this to shout out to our production crew camera people I mean just incredible the shots we've been getting all day last week same thing year in and year out just incredible quality from all the people involved in this so two factors to this replay one did he score not he didn't here's a referee but they needed to take a look and make sure the clock was set properly as well so two elements to that replay review and I I'd expect Montana here to just play Smash Mouth football we talked about this being a statement they have this day after last year they train in the offseason with purpose for this game they've got to leave but they don't want to just win on the road here they want to win with authority and they can really almost seal this one if they get into the end zone here [Applause] touchdown montana marcus night with his first touchdown of the day his hip rushing touchdown of the season a team-high for the grizzlies as they push the lead back out to 24 points yeah you saw the fist pump there by Bobby how he's excited about this one he tries to keep his cards close to his vest but you see the hands go up right there he's letting this guys know he's looking at clock looking at score and then he gets that fat fist pump in there this this one means more to him than the average one they always say the next game is the most important but he had this one circled on his calendar for sure any realistic hope of UC Davis coming all the way back seemingly drifted away Dalton Snead and company a big day here in Davis everybody ante man take care the Ford sports s we are about to put a wrap on the Mariners season but the team continues to make lasting memories it was Felix on Thursday and last night the Mariners walked it off in the bottom of the ninth inning what will happen tonight hopefully you will join us a for it our pregame coverage gets going at 5:30 the game against the Oakland A's starts at 6 o'clock that's coming up I'm not sure as we get you back to Tom and Taylor that I am going to make rehearsals at 5 o'clock it depends on how bad traffic is across the bridge gentlemen back to you we have faith in you Angie when I was a fast baseball season season comes to an end tomorrow bygones involving now the bounds and it looks like the day at Jake mayor is over and helmet off 32 of 43 275 yards three touchdowns and an interception we don't know if this is due to the score if there might be some injury issue with Jake his backup is listed as number 12 Hunter Rodriguez will see they just want to give him some points I think this a combo of a few things gonna look like he's injured they're saying hey first off let's get some reps to our backup and see what they're capable of just in case down the road we need them and the other thing for Jake why get him injured when you pretty much know the outcome of this game because you used to have the rest of conference play and you're still in a position to make a great run but Reed is on the season 3 of his 7 for 30 yards play touchdowns no interceptions Troy Spencer with the carry nine yards rushing on the season coming into the game a sophomore out of Verona California so we're getting a little deep into the depth chart on the offensive side who nearly an interception opportunity for Josh Sandri with Babb the intended receiver was a good throw that was a roll away outside they go about 15 yards and break back down hill a nice throw nice location just when you hit the receiver in the the pads in the chest they got a catch up Chandra may have gotten finger or two on that pass they're down in seven as for coming and down goes Rodriguez [Applause] my Alford with the sack that's his first this season well I'm is there a way to just credit this act to the entire deal I'm everybody knows that that was basically all four of them but that just shows you rushing for and you're able to get pressure like that and drop into coverages there's just not much in offense can do so three and out wheeling on for the punt Gerry Louie Magee at his 25-yard line signals for the fair catch and we'll see if Dalton Sneed continues directing the Grizzlies offense here's a look at our game summary brought to you by your local Ford dealer and this day has been offensively for Montana a lot about what dogs need well we knew he was good but if he can play at this level the rest of the season it's hard to imagine Montana getting beat the way their defense is playing we know what they can do special teams but offensively they have all the weapons they have perimeter guys we've seen tight ends now emerge we've seen the running backs not just in the run game but also in the pass game and for Dalton Sneed when plays break down him and Jerry Lee McGee that's when they they make their most magic happen and Dalton Snead's day appears to be done cam Humphrey number two on it he hands off to Adam a school rule down before the football came out Felton's needs numbers today how about that 22 and 33 268 yards five touchdown passes three of those coming in the third quarter 81 yards rushing 35 career touchdown passes for Dalton's me Marcus night carrying the football the leading rusher 19 carries 91 yards Devin King is the injured Aggie let's go back to our roots board studio Michael bumpass as a former receiver you appreciate Michael I know a quarterback they can get you the football at the right time at the right place and that I think describes the day that Dalton Snead has had here in Davis yeah Dalton sneeze had a great day man nine different players caught passes from him so he's he's spreading the love around he's not being selfish with it and also his office is 7 for 11 on third downs whenever you can be that efficient on third downs you know you're having a good day with 471 total yards this office was rolling it was fun to see them kind of climb out of that slow starting that first of that first drive and put things together and Dalton sleep with the team on his back rushed for 81 yards he did it all for these guys today so it's been fun to watch Devin King heading to the sidelines under his own power Snead reason to smile today cam Humphrey taking over as a junior 61 94 out of Issaquah high school about a 25-minute drive east of Seattle began his college career and Saddleback jc6 of 15 on the season no interceptions and one touchdown pass he's number two who's facing a second down and four we do a lot of this and boy a pig burst on the play for Montana and down around the 21st carry of the day I believe for drew Turner 32 a 6-foot redshirt freshman out of Glacier High School in Kalispell well this is a dream for a kid that's from Montana grows up watching Montana Chris football to be able now to put on the uniform and go make a play like that what a dream come true about that a 49 yard game impressive the stuff and I think it's his first carry of the year when we talked about the carries Justin green right there Montana grizzly fans know him he was a phenomenal player at Montana now the running back coach and recruiting coordinator so the talent you're seeing on this roster that is that man identifying and going and getting those kids and then the running backs that you're sitting here in and year out the results they're getting that is the development that he does so not only a great recruiter but a great developer of talent and by the way one of the highest character and integrity people you will ever meet your life so after that 49 yard carry into the EQC red zone let me correct myself it's not Drew's first carry of the season it is his longest by far he had five carries for 30 yards coming into the game with a long of nine he may need oxygen after [Applause] second straight theory when you know these kind of revs tom to a lot of people that game we know what the outcomes gonna be so there's somewhat irrelevant but to the coaching staff they're very important because you're getting your backups you're getting guys experience and now you can get teaching reps on tape because for most of the backups it's only practice reps now you get to see what they actually do in a game and some of these guys you are going to need at some point down the road in the season when they work on my map that was Drew's third consecutive Humphrey will keep it knocked out of bounds will shy of the first down by team lock rolling three 34 and left in a game that I think is gonna draw a lot of attention again by the elite of FCS football this is a statement game win on the road payback from last year for Bobby House in his football team yeah very much so and and he's really trying to establish a culture and identity for Montana football under his guidance and his staff and I was recruited by him out of high school I know he's got a silver tongue he can recruit he can coach and develop he's very very he's an ultra competitive person and the kids buy into that and when they start seeing results winning like they are they really buy in and that's where something special can happen and rather than add on with a field goal that like the move by Bobby how just to run the play and the ball ends up going over on downs to Davis look at that Big Sky titles in Montana history 18 7 straight delivered by Bobby Halcon his first in his head coach 23 FCS playoff appearances 2 championship 7 title games and Bobby took three of his team's two national title games denied each time and you know that is a drive and motivating factor for him to get back there and claim his first national championship his head coach at Montana brothers and we look at their upcoming schedule they you know we talked about the Big Sky week in and week out there are nobody got Idaho state who's playing really well Sacramento State who's got a lot of talent Eastern who every year is very good Portland say struggling a little bit but then they've got players and there's no week you can just show up and win you've got to come and bring your a-game if you want to continue to stay at the top of the Conference standings ornelas with the catch on that one Regas my spot to throw from overthrows his intended receiver ornelas you know we've talked about Bobby how can his son Robby being a safety on the team how about Dan Hawkins the head coach at UC Davis his son Cody he coached him at Colorado Cody was their starting quarterback now Cody is on the staff at UC Davis as a receiver coach and he is very vital in their offense in recruiting I was with him all day yesterday remember that name Dan Hawkins is a great coach in his own right but Cody is going to be very very special in this industry that is the name you want to remember because he's moving his way up and there he is right there Troy's bench at the ball carrier Michael Matthews backup linebacker for the Grizzlies sophomore out of Camas Washington campus high school with a tackle you can always just tell when you're talking to a coach's kid though because of their demeanor the way they talk they just see things from the coaches lens they talk like your coach Rodrigo showing he's got a little bit of an arm there is he looking for Babb but could not make the connection fourth down and 13 coming up in the punt team coming on for UC Davis well let's talk about the turnaround though with Dan Hawkins and this staff what they've been able to do here a couple years ago it wasn't in a great state of affairs the talent on the roster the fan base the excitement and they come in and turn it around get the offense going start recruiting they brought in young guys they have to get reps and experience but they've done a really really nice job here terrific punt by weal and Jeremy McGee just got out of the neighborhood let's send it back to our roots board studio the forward sports desk and Angie Mentink I am really impressed with a Montana Grizzlies fans so early in the season and so many where I route photos presented by pain West Insurance there check it in from all over the place we got this one from down in San Antonio Texas I'm wondering what's in both those cups that's double-fisting right there we got a mug and a thermos that's impressive and then we've got this one from Sidney Montana as well supporting number 90 six there and one more for you Joel checks in from Henderson Nevada keep the photos coming use that hashtag where I root a reminder when you do use that hashtag it does give us permission to use your photos on the air but again Montana Grizzlies fans guys already in midseason form no doubt about that that is a passionate fan base they always travel well good representation here today in Davis California soaking up the Rays and probably calling friends and family back home going how's that snow piling up on today they bear some of the most passionate fan base I was at the team hotel last night it was packed it was just packed outside inside at the bar everyone just hanging out they travel well and the fans know the players they know the program there are really educated fan base about their team and the players and coaches on the team that's it's a cool thing to see [Applause] inside a minute remaining dominating performance today by mime 10 it's going to be interesting to see how high they move up in the polls 18th coming in this week in the FCS stats Paul Davis 4 we'll see how far they drop and you wonder if Montana might be able to leap all the way ahead of Davis Davis dropping down because this was this was impressive today yeah this was a beat down I mean let's let's call it what it was this was an absolute beat down and I don't think that's a negative thing at UC Davis they are a really good team and are gonna make a lot of noise in confidence but Montana checks off every box when you think big-time Montana defense special teams control the line of scrimmage run the ball open it up with some passing disciplined football effort every box check check check check two head coaches congratulating each other Bobby helps Grizzlies knock off UC Davis 45 to 20 we will be in Missoula next week is Montana plays host to Idaho State the bengals with a big lead right now at home against Portland State so we look forward at that that'll be a one o'clock Mountain kick-off noon pacific time from Washington Grizzlies stadium for Taylor Barton and our entire root sports crew including Angie and Michael in the studio I'm Tom Glasgow have a great afternoon everyone [Music]
