it is the rare college football rivalry that has both distaste and camaraderie the 89th beating tonight BYU and Utah State and coaches there are friends essentially family to one another so we'll see how this plays out tonight but they played for a big old wheel that Clint cats think is downstairs with this is the old wagon wheel 180 pounds of steel and wood symbolic of the pioneers who trekked across the country to establish life here in the Utah Valley it's been given to the winner of this series since 1948 a series quite frankly that was one-sided BYU dominated in the eighties 90s and beyond the so Gary Anderson the spider here Utah State for the first time beat him in 2010 this wheel out of storage and that has rekindled and revitalized rivalry that splits and divides this state that's a Big Dig quit don't try to deadlift that thing Jason but that's good Gilbert we've enjoyed being here in the last couple days as we said the coaches are family but they do some anger going on - what's the robbery without the days leading up to the trash talk you know BYU hey they're arrogant blue-collar Utah State we don't get any respect respect the fact that in the last two of these games and BYU knows that 11 he felt a wide receiver told us he's just thinking about those two games the look Utah state's got an NFL prospect a quarterback yeah you know come April 2020 the NFL draft you're gonna be glad that you found out about Jordan love tonight because he will be one of the first handful of quarterbacks selected he blew up last season with 32 touchdown passes in the scouts love him this season not playing as well the last three or four weeks have been a challenge only eight touchdown passes his surrounded cast not as good at what he had last year but he is still a talent there are a number of Scouts in the house tonight to watch him and to see if he's back to the form that they love so much all right let's see if you have your decoder ring out to figure out BYU this year yeah wins against ranked teams losses that are sort of quizzical what you got I'm speechless I have no idea how do you be you know USC and Boise State and loses to USF and the Toledo makes no sense but listen they've had a bunch of injuries like a lot of teams they've been on multiple quarterbacks we don't know who the starter is tonight and that's been an issue for them but make no mistake about it as we talked to them this week they're focused on this game and getting the whoop the old wagon wheel back they want it it's been a couple years since Kalani Satake has had that wagon wheel and we'll see whether it's Hall or Romney at quarterback we will find out when we come back [Applause] [Music] welcome to ESPN college football presented by Geico as he saw quinces downstairs bundled up it is frigid here tonight and this is a fun rivalry the fans were the Utah State student section was booing at like 6:30 BYU players who just came out of the tunnel at BYU leads this series but again the turning point back in the start of this decade is the key here as Utah State has established itself in this rivalry and for Gary Anderson who's back now at Utah State after wells goes to Texas tag Gary Anderson kept his house here he was hopeful that he was going to retire here but after coaching was done he had the opportunity to come back and they are for him and his team and Kalani Satake who coached under Gary Anderson a couple of times I and yes there's bigger on those sidelines but Kalani told us look we are friends we hang out with each other's families that that's sort of things so it's an interesting rivalry game move fiddle well shiitake had Gary Anderson as his mentor and as he says Gary Anderson is responsible for his college football coaching career without him that doesn't happen he hired him initially as we saw the Michigan game early on the opening kickoff could go to the house and save on star birth could be that guy he is one of the most dynamic returners in the FBS the old wagon wheel in the balance here we go [Music] it's a directional kick and it won't even get to star verso Utah state won't have it across the 30 yard line and Jordan love you mentioned him he's an NFL prospect we'll get into a very intriguing back story as well a kid who's been through so much but right now on the football field we saw 32 touchdowns last year he's a quarter of the way there at eight this season but today we'll see what kind of present he gets because he's turning 21 yeah yeah happy birthday Jordan love and I think the best present for him would be a nice performance he is an outstanding NFL prospect he's had a rough couple of weeks and they're trying to get beyond that they love to get the caught up quickly this is tipped and as Chad's all you got a hand on the ball and second down coming up he started the year off very fast and then ran into an athletic and tough LSU team and what came out of that game was teens doing more things up front more stunts more blitzes giving him less time we go to the tech sweep and Devin Hopkins who's got great speed is a deep threat for you to stay in the gash there yeah game at the edge you're talking about love a lot of teams have dropped in coverage against him to gas couple yeah he's be seeing eight guys in coverage they will go temple trying to keep that up as Tonga gets a big hit that's Kairos Tonga who is somebody who could absolutely wreck your night and he drives back Utah State and right we'll keep track of him throughout the night but getting back to love mob has has to deal with guys leas here's Tonga getting in destroying one blocker and getting to the running back you know forget about your gonna block him one on one that looked like Mike Tyson's punch-out you've got the small guy who's your protagonist then the big guy and really you're gonna win that battle so Tonga creates a three and out for Utah State which they had too many therefore its last week this checks up inside the five bar Tolec does it beautifully and he is aunt see a punter that emotional in a long time since maybe Pat McAfee like five minutes ago it's every other minute look at this you gotta love that he's got the energy going on report yeah he's and look at him he's playing to the students yes he is he's also going to be awake until Tuesday Karen Hall as a starting quarterback for BYU he was in the concussion protocol after getting the start against USF a couple weeks ago Baylor Romney took over in the last game against Boise State and Hall gets the call here today CEO a female the freshman tailback to the 10 but Jarrin Hall is an interesting kid he's from here in the state of Utah his father was a tailback at BYU and Jarrin Hall is the first African American quarterback to start a game ever at BYU and he said he's very proud of that and proud of his heritage but he's not trying to overthink it he's trying to focus on winning and playing with his teammates and playing the game he's loved since he was 7 you call the satellite he's got some way right on the edge he hauls it in talent Shumway BYU's coaches said 50/50 balls give us that guy and he reels it in what about the throat drops it in perfectly and a one-handed grab but did he have control as he goes to the ground was he in bounds would control wow it's a moot point now he now second down coming up but you got Shumway who is a great high school running back but also a high school basketball player and you see a little bit of that there yeah yeah he showed you that ability to get up over some smaller corner bats and we'll see that matchup throughout the night now Hall is a guy who can throw the deep ball as you stay in but he's not afraid to run either they will get him involved in the running game let's take a corner blitz has come and he got him to back off all scrambling the ball he's up to the 41 and the arms of Devon Anderson there now [Applause] there's the blitz inside again just destroying the initial blocker up front and that's been a little bit of an issue this is a a rebuilt offensive line if you will because of injuries up front twisting odds the typical right bar playing tonight and movement at the right tackle spot and it's blake Freeland credit these fans [Applause] they've been here for two hours they've been loud during warmups you really feeling their presence right now Paul is definitely hearing them how loud is it down there Quinn it's loud for 25,000 it's super loud Bushman the tight end 89 and whites in the left slot he is the guy who puts out on tape in their past game Boston's that direction Paul to throw and he's got it just short of midfield and a beautiful dance to get the first down for a Levesque he fo yeah he got he coke on a crossing route they brought he PO from right to left back into Paul's vision and you can see right there he just came across the field underneath the coverage and a nifty move as he mentioned pick up the first down and we will keep an eye on 89 Bushmen most of the night he is the most reliable off target they have to gain of 15 on a third and 12 the drive survives [Applause] all again to throw to the nearside too high for Dax Milne the sophomore second down Paul is 63 205 he had committed [Applause] everyone thought he was gonna wind up it at Utah when he was in high school a three year high school quarterback he also he's a two-sport guy he plays baseball at BYU and you can see the R is it another pre-snap penalty which was so important to BYU [Applause] we asked a couple of BYU players a loving you fobian one of them if BYU is gonna win what's gonna happen he said no pre-snap penalty yes yeah that doesn't make it too happy no - one Freeland on the right side of the line it was also interesting to hear how he and other players say they were so embarrassed by the the loss last year in Provo - toe off the screen he initially engaged and now in Sprint's for a first town Latini katoa gain of 20 [Applause] a good job just waiting off leaning off of the would be Russia a big drop by the linebackers created a lot of room there Utah State playing without their best linebacker best offensive player David Woodward ninety-three tackles that 16 percent of the overall team tackles the inside linebacker maybe would have made that play too good point he had 24 tackles in their opener against Wake Forest as well this is Simon yeah he had him Hall had a step or two that ball was thrown little too far to the left not enough air he had room to get it more towards the end zone and give Simon a chance to run underneath it what do you think what worth being out does to this Utah State defense well he's he's your most dynamic defensive player and he's a guy who's around the football has a knack for it maybe a guy who was good enough to play one-on-one with Bushman so now you can do that it was a tight end you're talking about in motion and Manuel is super with the carry to set up third down BYU off a victory against Boise State at a bye week just after that Anderson his defense bound to feel a little bit too much recently well they got worn out by Air Force Air Force just clean them out 448 yards rushing on the ground that goes to your toughness your your your your identity your manhood and that got challenged all week in practice by the Utah State coaches tenth play of the drive for Hall they rush for and flush him he's got Simon first down and more BYU Myka Simon first and goal well that's just extending the play I mean that's Hall doing a great job buying time you know feels he loses the pocket and buy some time extending out to his right and again another crossing route with Simon coming back into his vision Utah states allowed 17 touchdowns in 23 red zone trips this year defensively [Applause] bYU has struggled in the redzone [Applause] he phone touchdown 11 he folk jet sweep on the goal line they weren't expecting that I caught the edge players inside and then a tremendous block by futsuu tile number 17 on the edge they are giving defo a huge hole inside but they were caught off guard by the jet sweep on the goal line 11 Kiefel told us that he's most excited in his final season here at BYU that used him more as a wide receiver rather than an all-encompassing do-everything guy but he's gonna take the score on the jet sweep and he says quieting the Wasatch II [Music] look Ron Swanson would be very happy with this rivalry game right now 200 pounds of bacon kurta there you go yeah are you saying it's not enough it's not enough no - I mean really brick we're keep baking it away - the students coming in yes spice up the rivalry a little bit don't cholesterol in use this takes the returner out of bounds at the three yard line Kevin Cotter is in the studio what do you have bacon [Applause] [Music] [Applause] always good to chew the fat with you Conner's thank you very much NFL prospect Jordan love here Herbert of Oregon and there are a lot of Scouts who don't want to miss any start for Jordan love because of his ability and especially his arm Talon Hopkins down beautifully done by Diane Gowalla ku I hear your top quarterbacks according to Tom McShea who sent this to us in traffic coming out of college party yeah we talked about this and you know he's got love really 5a 5b with from and he admitted you know there are other Scouts who have here we go love a little bit higher or a bit lower yeah I mean some scouts have loved it three or four I'm with Todd on this right now because of the drop-off and play this year and that LSU game in particular is the game that loves gonna have to explain away we watch that tape a lot you can explain away one or two throws but he missed them in this quite a few this is the third time rod that that I've seen love in person at this game last year and then his bowl game what stands out to me is his touch the deep ball the fades like the slants and the ball placement oh do you throw on the move right here and playing off script yeah he throws really well on the move well he does q and the thing about his accuracy you mentioned ball placement he gives the receiver a chance to get yards after the catch he's really good with that on the short and the intermediate passes on the deep ball he's got really good touch so I expect that we'll see him throw more tonight more deep balls he's got to get the ball out faster they haven't protected him very well at the last three weeks he has strung out right as the ball comes loose they're gonna blow it was a clear recovery by Kafue C for BYU but they do blow it dead sort of thing let him run it all the way out and then blow it right that's what I thought they were going to do yeah well they never made any penetration down there Oh looks like he was down check the arms not a knee but the elbow got left elbow down I believe and Jason he limps off jaylen Warren who's been battling a sore ankle coaching staff alerted us to that he limps off after that play and it looks like he's gonna have a a short evening which brings Gerald bright back into the game who is their lead back love this way it's caught first out to mariner decisive on that quick game a little bit behind the receiver but very decisive with the ball down low that's the Utah transfer COC mariner who comes here as a grad student now bright to your point rod on the short game Jordan Love had ten touchdowns last year in throws from one to ten yards he had some more talented guys around him as well he has not had a touchdown on a pass like that all year swing pass short game that just hadn't been there for Utah State yeah you see he he pulled the bow down resent ice down the field looking for something trying to buy it and then was decisive about let me just don't run and pick this thing up it's right in front of me they had an absolute juggernaut last season nearly averaging what 50 points a game they sent four offensive players in the NFL camps they had Tarver you know the tall receiver for the jump ball Jalen Green had a great running back this is a really new cast around him this offense scored more points than any other Mountain West offense in history yeah you want to see the arm strength there the pocket was collapsing around him he couldn't really step up and make a throw but he was able to with his arm alone you know get that ball out there in the flat [Music] play number 10 of the drive and this is a football hits on the turf again got this one looks like devin Khufu see at the bottom of the pile for the Cougars and it is I think that was no wig we who knocked the ball loose look at 88 he gets that left arm in there and a turnover BYU all in their favor right now ESPN college football is presented by Geico 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance so Utah State is an agricultural school so they have a dairy on campus that they use as a teaching mechanism and sometimes if you're the opponent he use it as a trash-talking package the Wallach who did this week he said they'll be out here ready to protect their dairy farm and then Utah State responded with a video and all sorts of cowbells and whatnot so this is where the we have this house and we got the best milk that's right yes hey Matt Geritol takes the staff that I end up goes to feed out on a first down carry and Kevin Connors in the student [Music] [Applause] [Music] we got house calls all day long it started at noon Eastern Time with Michigan on the opening kickoff basically in a day and it's everywhere it's an epidemic it's a good thing it is yeah it's exciting the kickoff has been minimized in college football the returners are rising up what did Kevin show us with a few minutes ago USC scores a touchdown Morgan comes right back with the kick 6 I like kind of day I like bird down by the way it's very agricultural yeah it's nice you're totally into the bacon and the milk and ice cream and all that we've been doing this for nine weeks eating is my specialty my goodness that is way more than one for Hall colada Satake loves the quarterback sneak this was not in his wildest dreams well this is a great runner we talked about that earlier he has that ability to add that and listen he wasn't thinking about one yard he got into a very very soft area got a great great block by putu tile again who had the great block on the touchdown run that that was a driving block for a snake Mike goodness from a wide receiver turned it upfield gain of 12 all to stake Paul's steps it and as a completion to Moroni I love Lulu pututo just his sixth touch this year some very different offense from what you're used to seeing in the days of Steve Young and Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer and where they threw it all over the field and when they ran the ball and ran it inside with a big offensive line this is more of a perimeter running offense short passing attack not so much down the field throwing the ball is we used to see back in the day [Applause] they have not been prolific in scoring this year at a hundred and third in scoring offense but they really turned it on early this rivalry is katoa has a first alum yeah and that's another example of the offense now you know kind of a counter pulling two of their linemen to get to the end you know not really trying to pound it inside now if they're really doing well on the edge it'll open up the inside for them later what's point about Woodward being out is a big one here because as he said he might be covering the tight end but he's also their leading tackler and there's Bushmen who tied it up there in the slot tight end playing as a receiver gets a mismatch with the safety it doubled a lot this year instead they go deep down the sideline found a dolphin grab four milled on the friends its first and goal BYU Wow what a throw and what a catch left me in that's all you need that's all you need Milne laid out he beat the All Mountain West defender DJ Williams [Applause] Entei six turn not just a turnover it's a red zone turnover you're going in two points no you're not it's going the other way [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so utah state takes over they do it at the 14 yard line because the returner tayi stepped out of bounds a couple of yards short of the mark originally and here's another layer to this rivalry Reilly Byrd the BYU graduate tailback is into the ballgame he has a number of friends still over on the other side trying to downplay it a little bit this week but you know there's some emotion there [Applause] the tight-end Caleb left a Utah State first down but back to the fumble yeah let's see what set this up and sit away points just watch right here as you have Shelton coming through unblocked he's the unblocked defender [Applause] that's a beautiful thought of Jordan Nathan and this is a different taste for the Utah State offense they're normally a look over to the sideline team officious timeout for an injured player they're not looking over tonight the safety for BYU Malik more being walked off so we'll step aside and come right back [Applause] welcome back to ESPN college football presented by Geico 7-nothing BYU but Utah State is on the march as Jordan alog has hit six passes in a row after missing in his first and a flag coming in against Utah State it's 10 only Avedon oh the left guard but Jordan love is a great story in terms of his recruitment and for somebody who's not highly thought of early on in his career he's the story that you want to look into athletically he's a two-star recruit he was a tall skinny high school player basketball player under recruited not thought well of as a football prospect here he is on draft boards everywhere Utah State q was the only school that offered it you have former offensive coordinator David Yost has an eye for quarterbacks but he took a chance and Jordan went through a growth spurt he put on 20 pounds and he kept growing and then once he was on campus he's an absolute sponge so the knowledge of the offense the intricacies of the position and as you know David Yost is now with Texas Tech is it is a terrific quarterback teacher and this young man has just made rapid progress here to here Riley Bert BYU end of the deal I use first out and Jordan love really became devoted to football after a tragic event in his life when he really needed something he could rely on it was it was a very difficult time for him and his family his father committed suicide when Jordan was a rising sophomore Jordan loved growing up in Bakersfield California but he thought about quitting football yeah giving up sports completely and he was convinced by those around him that he needed to stay involved with sports with football and basketball that it would help him and it became his place and he devoted himself to football he he said on a number of occasions he plays and he hopes he makes his father proud very difficult not to root for that young man considering everything he's been through and mom doesn't miss a game no she does not first down for his Aggies [Music] another first down Caleb rep one more time his second grab of the tribe and there's that NFL armed talent we talk there's a swim look where this ball is catchable right in the eyes of the receiver chance to drug Duke Road the ball after totally different confidence exuding from him in this game and as opposed to the air force game we watched [Applause] Jordan love is showing up he throws a BB on a slant and comes back with touch on a back shoulder fade nice I mean a guy like but he's an easy guy to root for with his background and how hard he's worked what you think and very easy to root for and he's only got the Utah transfer on the back end for this one season but that combination considering the last names is the Love Boat you got loves and Mariner 4 six I'm gonna let you have that one they can make t-shirts if they want 19 straight completions for love yeah look at this throw he finds it he puts it outside and behind where he knows that mariner will come back and get it work on this and practice on a regular basis and there it is I mean he he showed you a lot of different throws on that drive to touch some some accuracy some strength power when he needed it a lot of stuff to see there all the tool very tools he drive write it as as the scouts like to say our buddy Tom McShea worked all day today to feel he's watching tonight because he's still evaluating Jordan love and as we said at the beginning love is considered one of the five or six quarterbacks coming out in the draft and who knows where he will be by the time April comes around he may be three or four who knows notice I said three or four because nobody's touching - huh you wouldn't think and nobody's touching her but you never know how that stuff plays out you can be a combine freak and have things go very well for you it's a fair catch sends us to Kevin Connors in the studio [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Oh Greenville wasn't treating them so good at halftime Greenville wasn't so nice to sensei you know at halftime about ten but that's one of the group of five teams to look out for Utah State is - how about Oregon and Utah looking like the class of the pac-12 and gearing up for what should be a pac-12 championship game come December that would be big for the league Oregon still in play for the college football playoff certainly made a Utah as well Oregon's only loss to Auburn [Applause] and he's got the first down into Shumway now that's moving to his left making an accurate throw in the sight line I mean Hall is showing you some stuff himself yeah he's leaked out of the pocket very well and thrown on the run with good accuracy that's what the receiving core said to us is Darren Hall is very precise with his throws and he's been on target so far tonight but dandy in the game 15 minutes in you feel like this sorta has powder keg written all over it it's gonna be fun all the way to the end BYU Utah State or even after one es bien home of the college football playoff if some folks ask the question with the first 217 win this game tonight and that looks to be a little bit on the low side that both of these defenses have struggled this season you know they have and the offenses have been cranked and only three incomplete passes at a 19 as this goes up the sideline for a heap oh and there's that burst from the senior first down look through that first quarter we saw some really good quarterback play on both sides and if we get this all night look out yeah yeah the 335 yards the first quarter it's a substantial number both offensive lines have done better than anticipated in terms of protecting their quarterbacks that clean pockets for the most part quick drops as well have helped we've only seen a halt at quarterback for BYU and he escapes once again called the sideline tiptoeing out of the grasp of Nick Henninger and it's second down now Utah State has been leery of blitzing Hall just because of the man coverage on the back end and halls ability to run and make big plays but at some point you know they've got to bring for five getting away with three isn't enough three is not going to work they're dropping eight into coverage but they're not getting any kind of pressure again Utah State without its leading tackler by far David Woodward out for the ball game P now this chopped down third down coming up Dalton Baker went low yeah he beats his block watch the left side of your screen beats his block and is right there I split two men you can't play that any better than that can't play it any better rough night so far for Freeland couple of false start penalties he got beat that time six-five 245 Baker made himself small and low to get between those two guys to make that play Utah State has really struggled to get off the field on third down this year there are a hundred and nine to the country [Applause] all flushed he looks upfield he throws in it's in completing wanted Simon and it's patted away by hating he got pushed to the right I'm surprised that BYU hasn't tried to get the ball to Bushman a little bit more now and that play was not designed for him at all he was up to the left in the formation and everything moved to the right fourth down and four what do you think of a punt here oh are you thinking that maybe for the rivalry game you got a little trickeration in store oh I don't know that rice smile makes me think that you might think so too no sir all droid boots it and the fair catch for Nathan inside the 15 7/7 no trickeration from Satake yet take you from plan to play brought to you by a Northwestern Mutual well offensive coordinator Mike Sanford said look we gotta let Jordan Love play give him some air and then he has been lighting it up whether it's the deep ball to mariner or some of those short throws the slants and the outs they've let him have the ball and they've just said look let her rip and he's been ripping it to me they've been double-parked Oh offensively - I mean the guy next to him Gerald Breit is the guy who basically said this week we need more tempo we play at our best when we have tempo bright-ass for it he's got it and now love surveying and slices across the 15 Kevin counters what you got [Applause] [Applause] there's a lot of haze and rightfully so of it that's a whale of a ballgame going on SMU trying to stay unbeaten as Gerald white takes his screen for a first rolls to the 25 he got out of it but it was blown dead the student section completely disagrees with the call you seem so by far be it for them to be partisan kneeling on the field to run this forward progress just I don't know about forward progress I thought maybe he got his elbow or knee down there no I will you quit I saw hand that's it ever sucked it kavika for new [Applause] please [Applause] where did he go wrong here he never saw him and this is a little bit of what happened to Jordyn love against LSU he didn't see an underneath linebacker and here's that problem cropping up again but knew I was sitting there in the middle and Jordan love never spotted him never figured out that he was hanging out there after a brilliant first quarter that's his first mistake big mistake sets up the red zone for BYU and they were cooking that offense started to build confidence you can feel here's that option they brought very well [Applause] tremendous play and they got the linebacker who was filling in there Shelton in the middle doesn't get this done watch the block on him 41 comes into the screen pushed right out of there and a huge hold for Hall that's one of those areas they thought they might need Woodward with the spying on the quarterback and dealing with the quarterback run game it came up big there as Paul scores one play after the turnover ESPN college football won't you buy Experian boost raise your credit scores instantly at Experian comm / boost the Aggie Creamery since 1888 that they do it from cow to colony it's what they say directly from tonic oh I had the Aggie blue mint earlier he's very good it was part of the trash-talking this week too it was it was very who's got the better dairy on their campus better Creamery the answer on the scoreboard right now is Jarrin Hall is out dueling everybody 14 to 7 BYU on his touchdown and remember this is his first game back after a concussion a couple of weeks ago against South Florida this sends up out of bounds off the bat by Scarborough and the Utah State wants to return the ball so much that they're chasing it to the sidelines and BYU is getting some bang for the buck there the end this is not the right deal here and he's got to recognize this as great a returner as he is he's got to recognize that that kick he can't do much with and he's gonna hurt his team with that come on e Satake told us they were gonna kick to him standard kicks well close to doing that well you believed him when he said that I did I actually did it's very trusting quail it's nice it's a rivalry contender since then he's not gonna kick - my guy who knows him better yeah they've known each other for a very long time Gary started the week by texting some of BYU coaches what's up guys crying emoji hello hey how are you there's a more trash talk straight up this [Applause] for Utah's day as he drags him to the 30-man just a little counter action bringing the tight in backside guard around to create a gap inside watch right to left there you see that tight end good block inside kaylynn rep little decision for love and he floats it out for Nathan and that's where the improvisational skills the scatting of Jordan load is impressive hey that first play they double-team tonga successful the second play oh man that's just a wicked RPO yet talent is the guy to look out for on that defensive line as its second down coming up but pirates Tonga number 95 right in the middle of that defense here is and he's a guy that they account for every play he's gonna bring himself back into the plate trying to crawl into it as love drops it out of balance it's third down yeah Tonga Tonga is a guy that Utah State is very much aware of and they know that they can't really single block him so there's always going to be some kind of help or trying to run away from an NFL prospect he lost 35 pounds in the offseason because he stopped eating burgers yeah that's what he said he also said look I'm coming out for the draft in April he did let's be let's be clear about that love the honesty quit head leaved him too very much haven't seen pressure from BYU yet they tend to drop a doubt ago there is the pressure love his sack for the first time of the ballgame it is maje they only brought four but they wanted to work on the right tackle over there hack and hack doesn't hold off Mahe he gets in and that's just one on one that just beating the guy in front of you a marker has come in it would be fourth and 15 the roar from the student section is hilarious for the silent warning by the way that's a rivalry sideline warning reaction now we're gonna have to keep our eye on that right side now because BYU has found something in the one-on-one matchup over there with hack so you're gonna have to give some help if you're going to protect your quarterback over there they will come back at that Bartholet - heave-ho a fair catch at the 22 so BYU is on the football and we come back Luther's are up 7f ones coming up the u.s. Grand Prix in Austin tomorrow 1:30 Eastern on ABC in the ESPN app Lewis Hamilton trying to clinch his f1 title for the sixth time John and David are truck drivers take you from Salt Lake to here and Logan they are wonderful folks they drive everywhere they take our big production truck and they drive it everywhere all across the country we were where Minnesota last week we were Minnesota to to Logan Logan now not too shabby oh yeah it's not a two-hour drive that's you tell them where we're going next week yeah we'll be in Vancouver [Applause] another nice ball from hall to gunner Romney Hall supplants gunner Romney's brother as the starter baler Romney as the backup quarterback tonight and that was a strike yeah we've seen some good stuff from Hall tonight and we've seen a little bit a little bit twist on the BYU offense it's sort of like they found an identity in beating Boise State last week more perimeter run a lot of RPO get the ball out quick no more drop back seven and protect the quarterback in swinging [Applause] for katoa Bozek Wilson originally the starting quarterback he gets bounced in the Toledo game with a thumb and drink quit they've been all over the map quarterback wise last couple weeks and Wilson's got a lot of talent there to stumble on a late interception against Toledo that took the cast off this week so he's maybe two two or so weeks away bella romney's and not 100% with the foot injury and here's hall where's that guy [Applause] all with some love to the sideline incomplete he wanted Romney again and the coverage that time from DJ Williams the all Mountain West DB he's five foot nine out there going up against receivers here taller Romney at six foot three that's just a jump ball i 50/50 ball they want to put their guys out there and just see if physically and they can take the ball away [Music] and I've been calling for Bushmen [Applause] he has not been involved in the offense [Applause] katoa off the screen he's got some cavalry and he's very close he lost his footing and they're gonna mark him a little bit short here Oh [Music] he had that and the turf monsters herd down and the farm got him or he may go for this he's looking like he's gonna go for this Uriah he was just a wee bit short now this is the rivalry talking this is emotions talking because right now you should kick that ball well they could bring in their scrum package with Tonga and others and try to push the file they've had some success with that formation yeah I hear you it's just that why take the risk you're kind of controlling the game right now you miss this you give a short field and momentum back to Utah State weiu is called the fun is that what did the analytics say well they have this a tough I need fourth and one here's the thing BYU is 4 for 13 on fourth down this year they have not been a good fourth down team at all but the analytics a go all the time in fourth and one yeah when you're 3 1 years 3 & 4 in the rivalry game they say go I like I like that sentiment Kevin Conners what you got in the studio [Music] [Applause] [Music] at fifty-four forty or fight tonight those are our faces when we're not arguing over a fourth down it is putt time BYU decides to kick it and Oldroyd sends it recycling we were discussing options I think I think if one person says we're arguing it had to have been an argument thanks to definition hey Sunday NFL countdown 10 a.m. Eastern Randy Moss says the best catches from college football dak Prescott one on one and inside the Patriots secondary as well week nine Monday Night Football the cowboys and the Giants 8:00 Eastern on ESPN coverage starts with Monday night countdown at 6 and the Giants just want to win and he's sort of when they've lost five straight in the series which makes New York sports radio phone lines light up even more than normal Utah State for the fourth time in a row starts inside its own 15 yard line which I got a recipe for happy offensive coordinators and that's with what led them to the conservative play bring the tight end around again trying to get a block and make sure on tonga and this is the area where love struggled throwing last time is an absolute art for Jordan Nathan and the first time you want arm tell there you are Wow Wow you talked about that is a dime between a couple defenders Riley Burton on first down I mean look they had one first down all first half jordan loves just happy to have the football after that air for his chariot race they got dragged into last week so we call for the offense pretty much right when they run 37 plays yeah I mean they normally don't hold the ball very much as toughens gives ground gives the first down back gets a yard on that run gotta know when to fold him he's trying to make a big play that he can outrun but ey you had great discipline great angles Shabana Willis with the tackle and it's third down and seven remember the last third down right tackle they got a one-on-one matchup and Utah State couldn't hold up let's see if BYU goes back over there and tries to get that matchup again the Aggies have to double-team Tonga inside and that leaves others out on an island yep timeout called by BYU BYU is called the second charger is Tonga the great disrupter in the middle of that defense third and seven on the other side this season Taco Bell is celebrating student sections and passionate fans like these by awarding the live ma student section of the year the Utah State Aggies student section already on the national watchlist go to espn.com slash Taco Bell to see how your school can compete or get the committee's attention by using a hashtag live ma student section contest that's the nicest sign that's out there is BYU isn't very good I'm watching over there that's where the pressure came last third down we send rep the tight end that way [Applause] that's leia TOA over there 58 matched up quick set for love pressure in his face and a soccer ball on the mark 4 one more time and a nice adjustment by Utah State they brought help over on the right side to give love extra time and hurry up well he saw the heat coming up the middle and he stayed in as Burt has a first down carry back to the guy your in-game adjustment you were having trouble on the right side you get protection there a nice connection with Marin on the sidelines anticipation and the release not sidearm but not over-the-top love with time i intercepted his second deck paint Garr the freshman his third of the year once is a mistake twice as a trend three times is a problem this is a third time this season we've seen love miss not read an underneath backer in coverage and try to squeeze the ball in and get it picked that is something he's got to kind of work on but what a tremendous play by will ger who's six foot three and showed you his hops father Dana played at BYU and will gar who had his first interception against Washington gets his third already of his redshirt freshman season and Gary Anderson is very displeased if you're watching closely [Applause] jaren halls been exceptional tonight and he's got sit down the tight end for a first down great toys by Hall that rattled that he couldn't find anyone then Julie went to his check down you know the old saying can't go broke taking a profit it's exactly right I mean he we talked about his BYU history was his father playing here his brother was a running back before some knee injuries shortchanged his career KJ hauled his brother a spin move Paul gets out of it and makes a great one out of the deal just short of the line to game Wow that's he racing a mistake you know the pressure was there nowhere to go and he erased that mistake and picked up or almost picked up a first down you know you need a quarterback who can make a couple of plays a game like that for you to keep a drive alive that was T pun delay I who had 10 and a half sacks last year he got a mint on haul but couldn't bring him down seconded to [Applause] phenom on a first down for the Cougars Paul's pocket presence has improved dramatically from his prior start seems more comfortable more instinctual yeah moving in the right direction not panicking and really using his feet I agree with that then q on these running plays Utah State defensively they're moving some of their defensive linemen you know when you do that you open up a gap if you don't hit home [Applause] there's the option with a wrinkled alum Akito slips one tackle and he fold a Swiss Army knife has a first down for BYU you have to have eyes on he foe where he lines up and how he moves man coverage you see his guy coming to try to make the tackle and Haney almost got them so that was Williams who almost got there you see him take off on that jet sweep you as the corner you got to go with him and try and get him that's the area of the field where BYU will take some shots or showcase one of their many trick plays once across the 50 on the opposite side of the logo this has been a very creative offense since Kalani Satake took over a couple of years ago they do it again Heep for the pitch back haul loads up a weapon down the sideline and he's got a first down and goal [Applause] well is that quilt about tricks it is part of their offensive DNA they keep it fun Jeff Grimes and his staff tiling it up week after week weirdly Anderson knew it was coming Q how's this gonna say we knew shouldn't they know Gary Anderson knew why didn't the defense know this is one of those I think that you think that I think that you think rivalries they know each other so well and clever play calling this time Hall design run that he is dropped to the back field by Haiti yeah we as q pointed out this area of the field known for trickeration for them and it's the toss back in Hall making sure he gets it out to his tight end wake and plenty of protection is he and clearly he's in left foot down quarterback run [Applause] zone part of halls Arsenal yep why not a numbers advantage when you run the quarterback down here draw we saw it earlier this time he unloads down the middle watchman's first target is six now let's see there's a whistle there was a signal of touchdown was there a timeout before the play the official in the back of the end zone said touchdown to the play do you see an official on a note play situation signal to touchdown that's what happened on the end line and bushmen will have to go back to the drawing board for the score I [Applause] disappointed his humor please reset the game clock to 242 for zero okay so listen in to the snap here listen [Applause] here a whistle that came well after the snap if there if if what we're hearing was the first whistle it's loud in here well if the timeout came in late I'm sure Gary Anderson looked out there and he saw Bushman as the third receiver in and the slot matched up with the linebacker that's not a good deal for Utah State all I hear is journey is that right now or just 24/7 that's right now okay you look at Matt Bushman he's a junior tight end he was a tight end of the week nationally after that game against Boise State and he just has not seen the ball so far tonight yeah a little bit of a decoy a little bit used to help in pass protection but he is a factor down here in the red zone six-foot-five 2:45 you can split him out with the skills of a wide receiver and that's a mismatch he's back out there and that slot again right there how do they play it's a wonderful haul dodging and oh my goodness do you see him finish that run he ran over Shelton watch the end of the run not the blocking up front watch the energy finishes this that's not a quarterback that's a running back no and it's not an outfielder either you don't see that a whole lot from the guys playing the seven eight nine positions in baseball but man that was a heck of a run for Hall and it's 21 to 7 BYU and that was a design run it was a quarterback draw they showed initially pass protection and then fired out to give him an escort hey NFL primetime tomorrow 7:30 Eastern boomer and TJ highlights breakdowns all of us who grew up in the 90s loved it more than anything in the world streams each week you can watch anytime you want Monday Tuesday Wednesday but at 7:30 Eastern on Sundays and to get ESPN Plus you download the app or go to ESPN plus.com those of us who grew up in the 80s and before like it - I like that you threw the before in yeah that was nice that's the wagon wheel they're playing for the old wagon wheel Quint gave us a pioneer history of the region he's been reading up on it all week long but the story of the wagon wheel is a very interesting one and Quint noted it as BYU had it for so long ten years in a row Utah State had to have their van driver go to the BYU facility and dig it out of storage because there wasn't really a rivalry as Gary Anderson said BYU won so often they stored it away and forgot about it didn't know where it was I was just the wallpaper potpourri star fur is shorted a 30 and a flag has come in as well so Kevin connard's updates just gonna have to wait for half a second he's itching to get you something over on ABC I believe SMU and Memphis playing a tight one about that group of five race that's getting pretty intense Kevin's all over that with what's happening with SMU and Memphis Cinci UCF winning earlier against Houston Boise State in the hunt plate tonight against San Jose State personal foul tripping number 19 of the receiving team Shawn Carter at the wrong time all right Kevin what you got [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] they're gonna have to really squeeze it in to have time they got I think a ton of stuff yeah to do Ivy League finish we'll see what that was and two and a half minutes or so you're from Logan Utah where Utah State has turned it over three times and BYU is punched it in three times trying to break a two-game losing streak against Utah State pressure coming screen there for bright and bright turns it upfield Gerald bright with a big hitter for Utah State they needed it badly 34 yards and they did that perfectly against a three-man rush BYU dropped eight they flew out of there there was a lot of room that is a misfire he wanted Nathan and too hot to handle from love yeah and the Angela Mandel read that better than the receiver it would have been right there for it hey college football playoff top 25 for the first time released by the committee Tuesday 9:00 Eastern Time with LSU and Alabama looming some scores that will affect that today obviously as this fire is again and third down you know the one thing about the initial rankings coming out people get incredibly worked up about it in week one way way people get worked up about college football but really it's so serene yeah good point oh yeah everybody scream relax it's gonna change and it's not gonna it's not gonna slow him down I don't think never think our talk is gone very well good talk uh-huh something out there third down and ten for Utah State with those rankings on the horizon Tuesday with the champions classic as well as there's a strike down the middle so he misses badly with two and then throws one right to the bull's eye and rep yeah you you see throws like that you see enough of him for an injured player yeah you see the flashes what more than flashes you just like to think that the rough spots and loves game go away as we see there's booze down akansha as all you are you play really really good player for BYU yeah they sent them on the Blitz he was around the quarterback with my my question about love rod here is you know how does he react to the picks he's sitting on 11 interceptions this season on this Drive he seems oblivious yeah the past I think he's just moved on from them and I I don't I don't know where that comes from for him q I don't know that's you know being a baseball player and you have to move on pitch the pitch play the play you know he's he's a guy who's you know been a quiet guy kind of kind of moved on from things he's had a lot of tough things happen in his life so maybe he regards a pick is not that big a deal and he just moves right on the comparison Gary Anderson made he said they're not exactly the same person but one quality is very similar from love to Alex Smith the quarterback who played at Utah and then for a long time in the NFL about a quiet confidence that they have they are leaders but not vocally and they're trying to get Jordan love to maybe mix it up a little bit more with his guys who aren't playing to the level around him that they would like but that's not really in his personality as yet well he has a lot of confidence in himself and he I don't think people realize how far he's come when you're not in the lead high school quarterback and you don't get all the trappings with that you got to work screen games so busy Meriter this time is crunched at the 34 and and what love did was grind we got in the lab and just kept grinding to make himself into an NFL prospect as a quarterback quietly doing it as well sneaking in to watch film here he leaks out of the pocket doubles back love all around now they say incomplete Mariner was leaning on the sidelines and it's going to be fourth down [Applause] yeah that's a good call so third down and seven coming up again right side pressure remember that Utah stated just didn't gave help on that side last time and it paid off for them do they give help again when they roll the dice now the officials have placed op the question is does replay buzz down that looked pretty clear rod that that was an incomplete pass I believe our referee Steve Baird said I can't hear no catch now watch Mariner that ball got him sound control and right there he does look like he controls it and now he's reaching for it and it looks like the sideline helps him get control that to me that is clearly a no catch point to the ball down and and he's on the sideline even if he ever got control yeah so now Utah State uses a timeout which seems odd considering there was confusion in the first place it gave them some extra time well maybe they wanted to see if they could get a review by that but also big third down for them maybe they need the time here to make sure what they're doing not just third down but is this an area where you want to go to place so they could be planning ahead and this was a time to take a break because getting a score right now is critical for Utah State [Music] you I you won the toss and deferred so BYU gets the ball on a half-time [Music] [Applause] [Music] crowd is booing two third and seven [Applause] here's the matchup over here [Applause] Rep the tight ends been important it's a superlight box yep [Applause] BYU rushes three love climbing live into the secondary he's down to 25 in a first down he recognized right away too much pressure from his right he's decisive he doesn't waste a whole lot of time [Applause] love scanning comes this way and he's got it again to the 15-yard line odd target prescriber showed some toughness on that prior one he put his head down he knew where the marker was no sliding there right just lift up he looked like he was going to loft into the end zone but Lee got an ankle first of gold yeah double-team inside on Tonga to get him out of the way that's the only way you can run inside right again dancing he's very close and down at the one same play going back inside double-teaming Tonga to move him out of the way and create a cutback Lane for their running backs bright at all no reason to rush here though they're down to 40 seconds maybe leave BYU some time this time he's handy gerald touchdown little help from love pushing it in the previous players under further review and buzz down and review it that looks like a clear touchdown ruling on the field is touchdown you'd need the indisputable video evidence to overturn I don't think you're overturning that not from that angle nothing that shows it where's where's the knee down when is it down that ball is breaking the flame is knee obscured right there if you don't have anything to warrant overturning at all this is probably a confirmed I would say so but but to the point of Utah State's offense Gerald bright we mentioned earlier he wanted more tempo they had a meeting at 6:30 in the morning on Monday Mike Sanford twelve of their top offensive players he said guys what can we do better what do you want Mora bright said we have more confidence when we play faster and that breakneck pace got him to the goal line and even with time not that much of a factor they punch it in with the guy who wanted that pace 11 plays 86 yards in less than two minutes touchdown this is not a field goal night this is a get me to the plane night Dominic Everly on for the extra point he's the all-time scoring leader in Utah State history after the earlier extra point passing Robert turban the fantastic tailback played here and Logan then on to the NFL another one for Everly this is number 310 of his career and Utah State is within seven in a big drive because BYU gets the ball on a half-time yeah they needed that and they needed that for confidence say to you know a couple turnovers stall them out at times and they had they actually had a turnover down in the red zone they needed to get that and Gary Andersen is relieved I would say that was a well call drive by their offensive coordinator Mike Sanford you remember the drive started with the first down screen out in the flat that had BYU rushing the quarterback a little aggressively it was a brilliant call that kind of triggered the bit momentum on the drive the green we saw the passing numbers about 40 50 yards shy in the air combined of their season average in the first half of this game wow you talk about the good quarterbacking earlier on and I know we've seen a couple picks from love but that's a good stuff what have been streaky tonight fair absolutely that's that's dead-on so BYU gets it at the 25 they have one timeout left they have a 7 point lead you're gonna sit on this I think one of the things that I got Romney in the game for this Baylor Romney checks in the young man who got the start against Boise State his first start he wins the game and now he's gonna be the guy to take a knee who keeping him warm I guess so more to take a snap from under center perhaps that's a good point q so ey you which has lost two straight games in this rivalry 21 14 with the lead at halftime 649 first half yards if you like points you're gonna stick around you're gonna get more of them or so we think 2114 your halftime score BYU's got the lead our halftime report Emmanuel Acho Jim Mora Kevin Conners they got it for you next [Music] welcome back to ESPN college football presented by Geico it is a chilly night at Logan Utah it's a point filled night in Logan Utah 2114 your halftime score the rivalry continues they battle for the old wagon wheel and BYU will get it first on a half time Utah State had the last touchdown of the first half that a 600 yard plus first half in this game so the expectation was maybe a defensive back the expectation was wrong they're very very wrong no we've had some great quarterback play in the first half of this ballgame probably will continue I mean what we saw from Jordan love and from Hall was just amazing and in terms of the quarterback play passing and running they both were outstanding a couple of interceptions for love but outside of that I mean they were there basically the same pass right right I think that I think you're absolutely right you think about what you loved was three key at times because he missed a couple balls he had a couple picks but what you got from Hall instead was simply flat-out great play he knew when to tuck it and run look at the 54 rush yards goes worth key critical scrambles or design runs by him both quarterbacks over 200 yards passing you see the two picks by Jordan love the thing that marred his first half of it but hey I tell you if you're an NFL scout watching you go in in God boy he's a talent boy he's a talent you don't like it tooth picks but he showed you his skill set so a couple of things number one personal foul called on that kickoff number to Baylor Romney's in to play quarterback so Hall was outstanding in the first half rounding took a knee on the final play of the first half and he's gonna take the first now for the second half so we didn't necessarily expect to see Baylor Romney after that first half for Hall we thought we might see him earlier in the game but after that showing a surprise here I am surprised you know there was not a plan to rotate them on a certain basis that Romney would get in at some point during the game but to open the third quarter after the first half that we just saw by Hall is surprising makes you wonder if yeah there's something going on with Hall katoya let's second down he gets wrangled across the 20 and he's got a first down hit high by elijah shelton who's in for David Woodward the leading tackler for Utah State who was out for the ball game that's made a big difference but they have gotten some decent play we haven't talked about left fridge number three an awful lot but he's he's the heart and soul of this defense and he's managed to get up around the box a few times and help out and some of the run game but this has been an offensive night not a defensive night Jarrin Hall is nowhere right now on this BYU sideline interesting quit all starting quarterback it is in the concussion protocol after the USF game the long Strider takes off Baylor Romney goes headfirst to make sure that he's got the first down that looked like a tourist spot actually Romney will get the first down but he looked like he got about a half yard more they gave him yeah it looks like he came up a little bit gimpy they're kind of limping back to the offensive set that's exactly right he's nursing a foot injury coming off the bye week and the win over Boise State he has got a foot injury that he's dealing with [Music] see on mobile he is he puts the option quickly fee now across the forty Etzion a fee now has another BYU first down this quarterbacks which is a real gamechanger now if your Utah State's defense because Gary Anderson told me moments ago the mobility of Hall is what what concerns him most if Romney's not a hundred percent and he's a little gingerly gimping around on that bad foot that really takes the quarterback run game out of BYU's back pocket I think that's right q [Applause] throw this time off a short set he goes opposite way tax mill the span he's got the first down for BYU Romney did a good job of getting rid of that ball there was a free blitz coming right in his face and he threw right in the direction of the Blitz which is what you should do because when the Blitz comes from that area that's where they have to make up the coverage yeah they're vacated yep Dax Milne with the catch on a powerhouse Bingham high school out here in Utah former walk-on for BYU you I you two wins against ranked opponents they've struggled in games that they should have won Romney uncorks down the sideline right on target for its brother gutter Wow what a throw what a throw how is Romney still a walker how is he not on scholarship look at the touch on this ball perfect gives brother a chance to come up with the play down there I think they've done that a few times together all my goodness that looked like something they ran quite a bit Simon shimmying inside the bottom of that dive he clipped the pylon and they're gonna say it was out of bounds or dove it now Simon thought he was in the initial signal was out of bounds at the sideline and let's see they waved it off initially and Simon looks like he's in there yeah I don't hit me with yeah second signal is touchdown so they are gonna call it a touchdown one official waved it off yeah well remember you've got to break the plane and get that ball inside the pile of you can't go over the pylon you go over the pylon you're at about that's right so one official waved with both arms overhead initially to signal amount of bounds then he was overruled to make it a touchdown watch now that foot inbounds but the ball hits the pylon that's hard for me to tell from that angle if that balls inside breaking the plane looks like it's about yes yeah so he would say not in the endzone there but again the call on the field just to be clear the call on the field initially was out of bounds they then overruled that on the field to make it a touchdown so the call on the field that's important for replay is touchdown they've changed the burden of proof here essentially now the hand look at the hand there to tough that left hand is if that's out of bounds as well I don't think I was but left hand there it looks like a little bit of white glove on white anyway I think either way you look at that whether it's the pylon or the left hand that's out of bounds but is there enough to overturn the call of touchdown is the question I've been asking I'm just the guy who just circled it he said it so I think so yeah but you're my attorney so I got to ask somebody well you're my attorney yeah you took the bar one more time than I did that's not true at least at least one more time on retainer are you getting billed by the minute here oh look the billable hours if I get two minutes it counts for an hour I know how this works I am going to send you a bill just for the heck of hey I deserve it it's a touchdown right now for BYU Kalani Satake looking at the replay Simon would have his first touchdown of the year in his senior season let's see after further review the ruling on the field of a touchdown stands there it is not enough evidence to overturn remember they changed the call on the field had the call on the field out of bounds stood and not been overruled that would been out of bounds then it would have that's exactly right that's that's the perfect example of why the call on the field matters so much as old Droid is on for the extra point and BYU with a new quarterback out of halftime punches the ball in and makes it a two score game 28 14 the Cougars with the lead we can't vyu gets in the end zone Baylor Romney comes in to play quarterback and leads the Cougars down the field on the opening drive of the second half Jaron Hall got the start Baylor Romney comes in and finds Micah Simon for his first touchdown of the year that was reviewed it stood it was a touchdown for Simon Skyler's Southam on the kickoff [Music] big rivalry here in Logan Utah as if their catch will get the ball to 25 quit what do you have on Jarrin Hall he was injured on BYU's final possession of the first half he remains in the locker room and he is out for the remainder of this game so Jarrin Hall who started tonight for BYU at quarterback will not return to this ballgame according to BYU spokes persons well q so they haven't told us what the injury is but looking at that last play he dove into the end zone landing on his shoulder and his head and remember he was out missed the last game because of a concussion so what would worry me concerned me is that he has a similar issue because of the way he landed in the end zone and you feel for him he's just playing so well in this game in his return States to the 24 first man in was kavika Fonua who had the interception earlier second down well and if it is a head injury or another concussion I mean it certainly raises the question for you is he back too soon did you come and play back in this game now it's an imperfect science that's right and we've seen it all year long in the FBS if you are a second quarterback you're gonna have an opportunity at some point and that's the good fortune of Utah State as jordan loves been in for all but 12 throws this year bright weaving his way to the 29 yard line but but look at the numbers of quarterbacks used and this is not all injuries at the FBS level this year but this is power 5 starting quarterbacks through Halloween yeah this is a mixture of guys who probably were hurt and some guys who were changed at quarterback for performance reasons but that is a higher number than we've seen before and just on our observation our games we've had multiple quarterbacks because of multiple injuries every game we've had this year there's been a question of who's gonna start at quarterback it seems like or who's going to finish the game at quarterback it's a weekly thing as love steps out of a tackle and throws it incomplete but we've asked a number of coaches this year we've canvassed the country every time we get into meeting or the coach why do you think it is and it's a variety of reasons but number one in part is how much the quarterback carries the ball in the college football game nowadays well and the other thing is that the number one bullet point on the defensive list is get to the quarterback and make it difficult affect the quarterback hit harassed knock around the quarterback so when you don't give a lot of protection to your quarterback or you run him a lot he's going to get a lot more hits yeah that combination ends up leading to what we showed you catch it on the ground only to die back at it he told us yesterday that people underestimate how difficult it is to catch a front that that ball is moving it's adjusting and you have to track it it's not as easy as you think it's coming down hot the higher the punt that that that ball is coming down hot and if you don't catch it clean and if it hits you in the chest or on a cold night like tonight the ball feels a little slick that ball just hit some of the numbers and then pops out he doesn't wrap it Haidee you don't think about him he he made the point quit you don't think about it when you're watching on TV the ball goes out of frame and that's back in the frame and it looks like it's the easiest thing the balls doing stuff that slips out of the frame Romney whips it and he's got a first down some way breaks a tackle it into Utah State Territory moving him out of the pocket helping his vision getting him away from the rush finding a big tall receiver out there in some way at 6-3 he's not a threat to scramble like Hall was so if you're Utah State you have to reevaluate your pressure packages you probably don't need a spy on them you probably can send an extra Russia let's see if they change up Q quick set quick throw to the side right in middle and one more time in a first down for Dax milk get it out that quick Yeti well and good anticipation by BYU you know they went max Pro because Utah State did bring extra pressure and so Romney had time and he still got it out quickly but you're giving him the comfort of knowing he's not going to get hit when you blocked with seven does not look like the kid that was nervous for his first place weeks ago he's pretty relaxed and chill totally different than that first play a couple of weeks ago against Boise State as he uncorks it for his brother and incomplete you see the last name Romney and you're wondering hey our our gunner and Baylor related to Mitt Romney they are very distant cousins but interestingly enough the quarterback that's now the backup to Baylor Romney Joe Critchlow is actually the closest relation to Mitt Romney because he married Mitt Romney's granddaughter and even he is well a little distant in that sense the granddaughter that's right yeah yeah he's not in the immediate fin exactly [Applause] carving the defense another first down BYU yeah this cutback is really working you know they've been a perimeter running team the first half and now they're starting out towards the perimeter cutting this thing back inside where they found some room to work good double teams inside by this offensive line that is a patched-up offensive line if you will a couple of injuries Tristan Hodge a typical right guard not playing tonight a couple of backups injured as well the toe off the flip throw back to Romney and he's inside the 10 from Simon to Romney first and goal there's a flag down back in the 34 Jeff Grimes is like come on it's my second trickeration play why would you blow a flag on that one Jeff Grimes who was mistaken for Tom Selleck by a couple of his daughter's teammates on the old volleyball court he doesn't wear the mustache he's headed that yeah yeah so he's got a little time Selleck in him now yeah I think the mustache says that let's see personal foul roughing the passer defense number seven [Applause] [Music] how often you see roughing the passer against a wide receiver by a cornerback that's right a five foot nine inch cornerback and DJ Williams you know you little frustration yeah no need to go the left hand slap upside the head most vicious game of duck duck goose you're ever going to see four first in golf for BYU whoever they put in at quarterback they have been marching [Applause] as at speed option he fakes the pitch and Rodney down to the two yard line we mentioned he's a long Strider he's a little niftier with the ball that you might expect yeah you know and they've lost nothing on the design quarterback runs with him to the Paul now I remember this Utah State defense got pushed around by air force and the entire week was focusing on how tough are you be physical and whatnot well guess what BYU's been pushing them around that's Kalani Satake the head coach the defensive coordinator for Utah State going against him Justin Anna is his best friend they played together at BYU so Kalani Satake has bragging rights so far in this game [Applause] quick throw too easy the brothers Romney store will walk in [Applause] this is just kind of a miscommunication on the part of the secondary there you're down on the goal line and man coverage you got to know where guys are they waited a while to celebrate together the Romney brothers give and finally it came the big moment for BYU and that family easy-easy in laughing 35 14 [Music] back here go let's take a look at this touchdown you've got Adams and Haney and man-to-man coverage watch Romney come in motion and get behind Shumway and Shumway plots both defenders now have balls thrown behind the line of scrimmage so Shumway was able to start that block as soon as the ball was snapped but you got to communicate back there and you know Adams and and Williams didn't do that you just bump and let that guy go yeah it's essentially a run play yeah at that point yeah you just can't let one guy take both of you out now you see you bundle up and try not to get blocked don't kick this tus Carver you're getting antsy down there for you just start dance confer you're asking for momentum change you absolutely are beautifully one of the great kick returners in the country save on scar ver taken down a Tuesday on ESPN college basketball season tips off the ninth annual State Farm champions classic from MSG top four teams in the country this is great stuff Kansas and Duke number three against number four and then Cassius Winstead in Michigan State against Kentucky 9:30 Eastern Time in the college football playoff rankings in between hosted by Reese Davis national title favorites Michigan State is number one some great stars look out for Cole Han theny at North Carolina the freshman Memphis could run the table in the American to Penny Hardaway and Riley Birds gone hurtling for a gain of nine don't sleep on Sam Maryland the Aggies though here at Utah State they're top 20 in the country starting the season this is a Mountain West defending champion they could be a sleepers certainly as well for some polls just picking up college basketball about to start look out for the Aggies I had no idea I gotta tell you though with this student body in their home court I'm guaranteeing that's a tough place to play because these students are off the charts into this game legendaries do more along Oh Cheers from love it's incomplete how engaged and how loud if they been down there Quinn Tech students they just took a punch in the gut with that last touchdown by BYU but this is I would have to say one of the more underrated student fan bases that I've ever encountered it okay across the country they're here early they're loud they're organized they're into it they got the blackout going so I'm really impressed with that don't forget Q they've been fortified with bacon bacon a nice creamy yeah 200 pounds of bacon when they came through the door oh yeah I bet it went fast to it they tell me people like that there's a dark down the middle from the live and a first down Compton is there a flag is down on the near sideline at the 37 the RPO action by Utah State run pass option looks like they're going to take the game Straight Outta Compton's hands the ineligible receiver downfield offense number 64 that that could happen on the run pass option because it is a running play your linemen are supposed to stop at three yards when they don't and you throw the ball you've got a lineman down the field seems like the officials of maybe notice that a little more this season point of emphasis well I've complained about it enough for three or four years well and quinces Bennett though who's on the line of scrimmage police the last week or so you didn't throw the flag love goes down third down and long that was truly the freshman linebacker there continues to be a past protection issue for Utah State on the right side of the line going fast on a third down and long love into coverage that's incomplete it was Bert the running back the intended target but he wasn't close to the ball Willis was nearest yeah and this is starting to get a little bit dangerous for Utah State now BYU offensively if you back out the kneel down three straight drives four touchdowns so they have not stopped them they need a stop this drive and they need some fill position for their offense well this the dangerous position being last in time of possession in the n-c-double-a puts your defense yep bart's Holyk two punts and he fo who put it on the ground last time has it cleanly this time the stick farm is not going to take down three Aggies and BYU has if and we come back playing for the old wagon wheel ESPN college football brought to you by Tostitos get to the good stuff some great quarterbacks and notably all of those falling in the lavell Edwards era the longtime coach who passed away just a couple of years ago and lavell Edwards such a major factor with his program but also right now with with Kalani Sasaki who got his first job as a coach under Gary Anderson Utah State on the recommendation of lavell Edwards and now Kalani Satake on his second quarterback of the Knights for BYU with Romney replacing Hall due to injury yeah one of those quarterbacks low yo alum certainly paying attention tonight before he does Monday night countdown catch him on Monday the throw ball yeah you see that BYU quarterbacks Paul and Romney Romney not any drop-off since coming in for Hall who was injured late in the first half their last touchdown drive apparently when he went into the end zone landing on his shoulder and head and BYU sitting with not return Romney to throw going the other way down the hash bar again incomplete but how about the moment for Baylor and Gunnar Romney hooking up for that first touchdown yeah pretty special huh how many how many people get to say I play college football with my brother and I threw him a touchdown pass it's one of those moments you're never going to take away the sense pressure here from this defense would be a good time to throw a screen but it looks like the Aggies play cover I think that's right cue I think it's coverage and you got to make sure you have a bracket for something inside there it is to tow off the screen cutting it back inside katoa with a big gainer Wow they had Utah State had a couple of defenders sniffing this out and they over ran the play to the outside medicine himer and also the lay I both had opportunities to make a tackle and keep them from getting the first down but katoa turned on the Jets and got inside of them it's another one of those plays you wonder how much losing David Woodward affects this defense yeah because katoa you know just turned on the Jets and went by them Woodward out doing injury tonight the leading tackler for Utah State Romney throws it incomplete to the sidelines Woodward more than the leading tackler you look at the not 93 tacos I did the math he makes 16% of the team's tackles he's got four forced fumbles it's a former high school running back and his ability to diagnose plays and just be a step ahead and communicate and make everyone better he's severely missed oh yeah and we've seen some poor angle some missed tackles and the yards after catch for BYU way better than what they've had coming into this game [Applause] straight up dinner tea down [Applause] Grayson got him by the Jersey but too late and at 28 it's using wake to tied in to come inside and double inside see him come in 37 gets on the linebacker punching those linebackers making a huge hole wakes had a tremendous night blocking for BYU whether it be inside or on the edge he's had his hands in a lot of big plays to BYU how about the speed from fie now the former state title winner in the 110 meter hurdles another first down for BYU which is continuing to move the ball easily down the field finally some resistance from Anderson their second down I think I gave credit to wake on that block inside that was really the two-time who came in he's the one who's had had the night we saw him down on the goal line on that jet sweep with a great block and certainly doing a good job when he comes inside and double-team sure goes up to the second level and gets that backer out of the way and creates a huge hole well called game by Jeff Grimes yep here today [Applause] Romney on the drag route for Iggy fo giving some ground and he saw that get bleaker and bleaker as he went toward the sideline it's third down you know coming into tonight BYU was not good with catches catching runs with 20 yards or more they've generated almost half their passing yards with yards after the catch they've gotten the big plays in the passing game that they normally haven't been able to pick up look at what they've done there it's about half up that's amazing for this team that's a big time pivot from what we've seen earlier this year in a three and four season Romney time to scan to the enshou it's picked off he won the 50/50 ball [Applause] Riu top state are nine over five ten they're both under five nine five eight and bYU has tall receivers to take advantage they wanted to put the ball up great position by lamken he's able to get in front of he foe and get up there and win that 50-50 ball now if he fo has an extra half second there to make a play on the ball maybe it goes differently but Lampkin did the work and Romney has to deal with the interception will this be the door creaking open for Utah States as the offense have something left to the tank could be a spark should be a spark they need that he says the little guys can't jump I know you would never say such a thing you got it you got a small DB smile on your face right now I guess I used to have to deal with that back in the day their tricks of the trade though you know well yeah I mean you you learn over time right there and that's part of the thing he's a true freshman out there getting great position making the play it's kind of stuff that you don't really figure out until you you know play in a year to sophomore junior year and you've seen a lot you've listened to the upperclassmen how to hold where to put your hands how to hold I like that that's on the record now college football playoff top 25 coming on Tuesday 9:00 Eastern over on ESPN I got it all figured out not a whole you heard it right he went into law hey listen wide receivers they're taught how to push off right click really deck by Tanner on the sidelines mr. Tanner took over the cleaners key are you feeling a lot of drama for Tuesday with the initial release of rankings no I'm most interested to see 5 through 10 and how they kind of how they set that up going forward yeah 1 1 2 is going to shake itself out next week when LSU plays Alabama we lost another unbeaten today SMU goes down to Memphis so that threat of SMU cracking the college football playoff has come to a close as Nathan slides by one and sets up a third down in short the race for the group of five is not so much the playoff but really who makes a new year's six-game I think I think all the candidates are too far off for the playoff but for the new year six game there's still a good race going on love seeking that first down marker and he did start the slide late enough for the first down good slide from a baseball player an outfielder who knows how to slide surprised at how many quarterbacks don't know how to slide give us your feel with a minute left in third quarter on unlove tonight as a draft prospect what you've seen I don't think much has changed as with this throw he's told showed you his arm talent his accuracy his ability to give the ball to the receiver with the ability to get yards after the catch great ball placement he's athletic he can run he's patient and then you saw a streakiness of a couple bad plays put in the ground here yeah the two outlier picks yeah and even as head coach said you know you can't do that right so it's well q and they've been similar the pics he's thrown in this game have been similar to the pic he threw against LSU so it looks like it's just something of coaching him through his progression and where his eyes need to be well right now he's rapping on the door for Utah State in a rivalry game that looked like it might get away from them but Utah State gets a turnover in the 89th meeting and there's a glimmer for the Aggies the quiet time from BYU Utah State trying to get allowed in the final quarter we'll see fourth-quarter here from Logan Utah Utah State hoping to punch it in trailing by three scores second down and goal coming up you got to be concerned about loves running ability here he thrown at Mariners second star respect the arm first BYU played zone coverage down here and they were asking a defensive lineman to play pass coverage down there let's see if the flags on the play or after the play [Music] once again another another RPO you you run that run play action and your linemen get down filled there was just a lot of blocking that got deep while you wait for your receiver to run that slant into that open area where you're sort of faking the run and that was the sinner Holly flora who just drove his man about five yards deep [Applause] [Applause] [Music] love scanner love to the enzyme and this is out of balance incomplete Nathan never got the foot in watch the end watch the feet catch yes left foot on the white that extra spin of the ball though [Applause] if you're being y-you you'd still have to be concerned about loves ability to take off and run come right out of the bat field they follow him he pulls out of the enzyme put it looked like he had right if he wanted to throw it there to turn up field instead he went for Mariner and it's fourth down he pretty much have to go for it here right and Anderson was calling for the late hit we talked about quarterbacks being hit a lot and he's outside of the pocket and he takes a hit one two three and a push down that that should be a flag he also very easily it looked like could have had the touch Dave he didn't see bright I can understand that with a rush coming on yeah and I think that was the issue for him but if you know that you've got a fork down he could have you know he's not getting run here is that fourth down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Nathan driven back by Austin Lee shades of Kevin Dyson in the Superbowl and a stop by leave for BYU Nathan is a hundred and eighty pounds five foot eight he does everything he can to try to get in but look at the hit he takes there that clearly knocks him back and after that the Calvary comes in but what a great job by Austin Lee who's a 200 pounder using all of his strength to keep Nathan out of the end zone bang-bang play [Applause] that is a huge stop for BYU you felt that may be Utah State had turned the corner here was trying to make it a game now from the one sneak time and they've had great success with the sneak today a 12-yard gain er for a halt in the first half and this from Romney yeah and I think it's your Utah State you can't come forward to sit back you've got to roll the dice I'm here you got to try and make a play if you've not used pressure before you need some pressure now you've got to take some chances to make something happen to get the ball back to create a turnover or to get a short field you you can't simply say we're just going to contain and get a three and out BYU content to let some flock take here and coverage bottom of the screen it's fine if you're bringing the cute remember the first play against Boise State last week he went the wrong direction on a fake that looked like a broken play on second down or a design run that does didn't go for yeah a little bit of a design run and they had that disrupted by the pressure Utah State brought and I thought that was the right thing to do to bring that pressure and here get on a third down same thing I'd bring pressure again challenge my corners to play man and not give Romney time to figure things out you got to do something to get back in this game [Applause] tip for others merely to shotgun could have been a pick for six but tayi couldn't hang on to it yes justice ke 63 240 redshirt junior gets his arms up he's coming on the right side again good idea to bring the Blitz he's not home he's so close to making a big play there twice yeah but those are the chances that you have to take when you need to make something happen it's got their first three and out from the Utah State defense as Oldroyd will kick it and make them to receive they run into old Roy and the flat comes in my goodness now that might be too much of trying to do something well you have a choice you know you don't have to do that you can reset up a return here ask your defense does that it's not worth the risk there you're getting the ball back fourth and four running into a roughing you're gonna get a first down on this the kicker [Applause] yeah I'd set up a return me why take the chance you're getting the ball back you got to get a short field you don't need this [Applause] and that's that's once again Thompkins the wide receiver who's trying to make something happen in it wrong time now you gotta mean even if BYU runs three plays you're gonna lose a couple minutes off the clock well and you're sending your defense right back after they're out there after they just got a three and out you know just played their hearts out to give you a short field so in that instance you want the ball you want a return you want to set up the short field you don't need to go block the kick and Utah State because of that sudden change is a little confused defensively with personnel and they're gonna have to burn a timeout Wow sent 12 out two guys ran off they only had ten that's typically where our defense is coming over to the sidelines sitting down with it with the coordinators of position coaches going over stuff next thing you know they're back on the field and so let's see the ruling on the field of roughing the kicker is under further review to see if the ball was tipped locked if it's if it's touched at all that's a legal play yeah and if it was tipped that's dodging the bullet let's see watch the football see if it changes direction off the foot of Oldroyd I wonder how he missed it right right he got in there so fast howdy missed the ball I don't see anything that could overturn I mean not from what we seen so far now the ball comes out to the left well there's a little wobble after it comes off but I don't see enough to make that clear to me now just watch Tompkins reaction I mean he doesn't get up and say he touched the ball like there's nothing that says they'd contact with the ball not that you're judging on that but it's usually an indicator yeah he looked like oh my goodness how did that miss him yeah what have I done essentially Golani Satake doesn't have time for this yeah he's like a ball came off with a long ways we mean yeah I mean he says it's easy so remember you need indisputable video evidence and did you see indisputable no I know I saw nothing that would be at all indisputable yeah I'm not changing the call based on what I saw we'll see if this ball gets made before we get our extra hour tonight if we got it they'd spin that hourly yeah all right is it against Tompkins off the roof of the kicker or is it deflected and Utah State would then have the football as a rule of thumb I have if it takes you a while there's not enough evidence I'm totally with you on that and I know you can't really put a time limit but boy it's oh that the question is though if it's taking this long you know they say it was deflected and they're trying to find a spot for the football diamond and spot been an elaborate review process let's check in with Steve Barron stand the ball was not dipped well wasn't it then you should confirm right that's okay well that's exactly what it is yeah buzzing Stan's it's control well yeah we can help that's all yeah we're just trying to assist so BYU gets it back I mean look BYU now has the football 12:56 to go and they have a chance to knock off some clock they're up three scores [Music] [Applause] jet sweep people seeking that marker again is so good an open space 11 Evo she's on the ball he's run the ball he's a very multi-talented player and that jet sweep has been affected all night they've been able to get to the edge and outflank Utah State it's not like Utah State didn't know it was coming tonight they knew they'd see it multiple times they've yet to stop it impressive young young man he fo told us the bitter sting the bad taste in the last two wagon-wheel games he's a big motivator this week he now breaks a tackle flag comes in two first down for now and we'll check the marker yeah missed tackle at the line of scrimmage looks like it's going back based on the indication of where all the players are headed there two markers on the field there was a block in the back in the middle of the play and if they flagged that one there are two files on the offense been legal block illegal block in the back offense number 61 that penalty is the clock holding offense number 77 10-yard penalty from the spot of the file first down so they get Chandan herring the accomplished woodworker on the penalty well and both those penalties were material to the play they occurred right in front of fie now as he came running inside pushing one guy in the back out of the way and grabbing another guy honing in preventing him from making a tackle good call by the officials saw Kalani Satake either trying to fire himself up or warm himself up by clapping over on the sidelines cuentas spent most of the night by the space heater that's a false of sometimes Oh III said it when the snap was coming because I didn't want the rebuttal going on is spending the remainder of the night by the heater but so far I've been able to avoid those so once you go there yet you can't get away like a moth to a flame right yeah there it is there's your buddy your best friend down there let's play where's Quint he'll be there shortly as you will he's a tough customer he's dealt with rain the last couple weeks we were in a tropical storm Esther down in Georgia they went to the Bulldogs pressure from the corner and the screening katoa with Bushman up in front trying to avoid a block in the back to toe katoa five Wow Wow great running ability but this was all set up at the start Christiansen [Applause] inside allowing katoa to find that hole and then yards after contact men yards after stiff arm give that to that's a pretty significant but they timed that out perfectly great job by the Lyman Christensen and Keanu they're becoming quite a lethal Scream team they are I mean right in front of our eyes Utah State had all the screen game on tape and a 77 yard hit the longest BYU play of the season leads to a whistle and a flag I believe we've had 10 20-plus yard plays by BYU tonight they only had 25 coming into the seats number 77 I think it's 9 Tiger please reset the game clock to 1034 9 passing plays one rushing play and again coming into tonight passing plays 20 yards or more they only had 25 they were 66 in the country that's in seven games yes 25 three and a half per they're finding the the chunk lanes the big plays over 600 yards for the first time in four years this is Romney navigating to about the five maybe to six I remember BYU is doing this with an offensive line that's been beat up and they've lost a couple of players and this is a little bit of a patchwork win tonight and a third string quarterback yeah and they're starting running back from earlier this season one of the best offensive players listen out since what came for yet Ison Williams the South Carolina transfer so if they can play like this with all that going on how do you explain beating ranked teams and losing to unranked teams well that's certainly how you explain the wins against the ranked team with some down days but they throwback to Romney goes to the end zone incomplete third down Bushman was the target on that as a tight end on the ride who's blocking and then he was going to scrape across towards the near side and he lost his feet and fell we said we see that play on tape every week everybody's running it for touchdowns across the country yeah never trust the tight ends down there never trust them when they go to the ground we're blocking always assumed that they will be in the route so cute I'll get you after this play third down and goal [Applause] touched it that's a couple times BYU as thundered through a Utah State tackler for a score on the ground today I take Keanu at the guard spot Christensen the tackle spot coming inside blowing up any linebacker inside hunting linebackers kicking them out of the way man until I had five yards to run before even worrying about contact remember that's a 99 yard touchdown drive that was only kept alive because of the roughing the kicker penalty and it leads to this exclamation mark for BYU f1 schedule continues on the u.s. Grand Prix and Austin Sunday 1:30 Eastern on ABC it's in fact Sunday in some locations right now it's on the ESPN app as well Lewis Hamilton gonna clinch his sixth f1 title would be a long way to go to not clinch in fact Hamilton's pretty much got it sewn up watch him do it tomorrow on ABC boys Sunday if you're so inclined don't forget to change your clocks your phones will do it on their own 931 to go in the fourth BYU a big lead ESPN college football is presented by Geico 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance [Music] this is one of the unique trophies in college football the old wagon wheel dating back to 1948 for two straight years the IDS have won it but it looks like we're about nine minutes away from a changing hands and heading back got two hours south to Provo when I like how you got into the shot there with all the grace of a palomino that was very nice you like my hat Jason smooth yeah you don't seem cold at all your that love that trophy by the way I mean there's some great rivalry trophies across the country as that comes loose and it is picked up live ball touchdown - with a store and that is a heads up play by kethu see a bad play by geordan love now he's arguing that his arm was coming forward and he was throwing the ball did it look like live there is any forward action this is just the ball he's got to eat he's in the grass there well well at best it slipped out of his hand as he's coming look at this the ruling on the field of a fumble recovered by the defense for a touchdown is under further review watch the arm yeah yeah at that point he's trying to throw it but I mean he gets jarred and it looks like it does look like there's an affirmative to push the ball forward but the rulebook says that if there's any question or doubt with the arm coming forward it is a it's an incomplete offense that's right so so basically what you're saying is 50/50 situation that should be it should be in Copiah stored the arm moving it over and you call it incomplete and that looks like yeah that's it's their arm root movement to say it's an incomplete pass oh that's that was a really close but it's not the kind of play you want your quarterback to have and if he's going to throw it he's got to know when he's in the grass he's got to get it to the sideline he's gotta get it out of harm's way or you just eat that sack and come back and play the next play you see some of the frustration on his face those you're maybe with the call but also with a season that's piling up it doesn't look the same gaudy numbers is last year yeah a lot of pressure not to focus on him but look he should relax about the future next April his name is going to be called as one of the top five or six quarterbacks there's not much that's gonna happen on the field that's gonna change that he's gonna have an opportunity to really impress people in the pre-draft workouts and meetings and the like they loved everything about him from what I hear now whether he is ranked number five five A or B or four or three only takes one team to fall in love with you that's right and we've seen that happen in the draft so he'll be fine and the way he handles the situation mentally as a leader is probably going to be as important as what he does in the field I think that's right you know he's a guy who's coming off the season that was remarkable fantastic his cast has changed around him a new coaching staff new things to learn and things have changed well guess what that happens in the NFL too so they want to know how you handle adversity how you deal with these things here's a call after review determined that the pastor's hand was coming forward with control before it is an incomplete pass the ball we've placed at the 25-yard line second down but timer reap please reset the game clock to 926 now if you're asking officials though and then people who evaluate officials if that was officiated properly they would say yes let it play out yeah and then yes you want to get the call right on the field but let it play out and let the clear recovery and ensuing play happen guys then go to replay and change guys on the field did what they were supposed to do guys in the booth did what they were supposed to do that's right that's right rulebook was as we stated so second down [Applause] love just flicks that one out and bright picked it off the ground so it's third down that was a forward pass and it's third down and ten coming up is we played in the 921 mark yeah if I'm Gary Anderson my concern is that my prized quarterback is running for his life right now you've got to give him more protection and this is a team that's still in the hunt for a possible Mountain West championship yes they're a game in the lost column now after the air for his laws but they still are a possibility to challenge Boise State as love drops it off that's one way to protect him at the screen game as bright pulls up short of the marker doubles back gets a block and still doesn't get the first down I want to go back to your point about the Mountain West Conference race this is a non-conference game it's 42 to 14 your quarterback is taking hits why not play for the conference get him out of the game now protect him his future and your chance at getting into the race first church timeout of the half it's a good point in his second timeout you've got conference games still coming up fourth down and one timeout called by BYU [Music] this week's college football rankings brought to you by Goodyear Saturday strike through somebody's going on to the playoff race now by Florida oh no you never want the Saturday strike through with your team you just don't well there'll be the highest-rated two lost team but that's not gonna help them in the committee's eyes in terms of the playoffs it certainly will not this is a fourth down and one for Utah State they are gonna go for it from in their own territory bright is the tailback as BYU has effectively used two quarterbacks tonight due to the injury to Jarrin Hall and Wright accelerates to the 45 at a first down so if you're thinking about Tuesday and the rankings that top 10 gave you the universe of those top six teams where you rank them you know might be up to someone's own preference [Music] don't forget those rankings come out as you said Tuesday 9:00 Eastern on ESPN I think we have a comp up for that there they are but I need stir let me make a case for Oregon go for it make a case for it go boy I I think I don't think you taught they went out can get there because of their soft schedule but Oregon can with their loss to Auburn and when it comes to one-loss team died ranked Oregon is the top one loss team yeah I wouldn't disagree with that at all it's that tip didn't complete so just don't see it happening rod well eliminate when you lose to the fifth best team in the SEC Oregon is the sixth best team in the SEC not true if you are a pac-12 champ with one loss and you go on the road and play Auburn and it's in their backyard and you control the game for 56 of the 60 Minutes the committee is going to respect that you lost to the third-place team in the SEC West the team that's not as good as LSU Alabama or Florida can you leave your teams neutral site to be eight to be fair well not really neutral fight it was yes it was closer to Auburn Alabama middle quarterback anyway when you have a pac-12 that has missed three playoffs in a row yep and now you offer let's assume that they went out you offer a champ with one loss having done and played Auburn if you don't get in with this as the best one loss team you know what you say if you're the pac-12 you know why are we playing this game six people about run the tape win the game that's it win again we merits we absolutely we should no longer be requiring zero losses that was the old system well this new system is about evaluating the teams I agree with you but unless LSU Alabama is one-sided I believe that both those teams have have a strong case well the end of the day you're ignoring the fact that the last two years a lot more discussion has occurred about the value of a conference champion and one of those two won't happen but they mean they will be a team that lost to the other one well let's take Alabama for example sure if Alabama loses to LSU they have a weak non-conference schedule and they have no conference title they have a common win over Auburn a team that Oregon Austin again q week schedule no conference title compared to an Oregon team with a contra and a strong non-conference schedule now if a is greater than B and B is greater than C a is greater than C your eye test might say you'd think Alabama is a better team see this this is where we're arguing though this is our smiling faces when we're having a discussion we're not arguing I'm just saying at some point if I'm sitting around in a room with a bunch of pac-12 people they're gonna go so in order for us to get in we got to be undefeated and they want us to play a challenging schedule let's make sense they're gonna keep us out four years in a row well win the game at acquits point win the game go where that feat is what you're saying yeah go undefeated you got you're gonna have in that scenario you'll very likely have an undefeated Big Ten Champion let me make another case - you're smiling let's say that you know we got these one-loss teams uh-huh you know SEC blah blah blah okay you know and you exclude an Oregon you're consistently telling people west of the Mississippi they don't matter when it comes to the college football playoff like you tell the group of five teams that went out and I mean that's what they signed up for yeah I mean when you sign up to be with four other conferences somebody's gonna get left out Nome is that you also signed up for that but the argument would be fine you left us out we had to lost chance we get that fine you left us out we had teams you had a week schedule we get that but there's that is not what do I you needed he's all second time in Utah State carries it inside the 15 can we stop I'm tired of my own argument Kalani Satake by the way it is real unhappy but yes yes we can thank you recovered by the kicking team first down Utah's well he's arguing what that he fo got back in there and got that one and was down I guess it's Riley Burt the BYU grad who plucked it from the ground he did muffin it's pretty cut-and-dry to think I still think Jordan love out to be out of this game I you can make a really strong argument for that considering Boise State is in a dogfight right now with San Jose State and that's a team ahead of Utah State in the Mountain West West Division the only team left in that division with one loss in the conference so yeah I mean you get right back in this race even with the laws to airforce right well you've got big problems if you're Utah State this is the second game in a row in which physically you've been dominating love get strict BYU football kaput see got this one how long have we heard that Kikuchi name around BYU we're covered by the defense the fences the strip Kofu see the recovery now control moving forward that time that ball was out before the arm came forward look here there's the big paw knocking it down before the arm came forward he only agreed we agreed we're gonna step aside of his harmony in Utah for those two college basketball games just saying you got numbers one and two and three and four as BYU goes to its third quarterback of the night and Prince low with the handoff but the college football playoff rankings at halftime of those two games involving Michigan State and Kentucky and Duke and Kansas least and basketball there they argue about teams what 69 and 70 or 70 and 70 bucks oh yeah that's right that's what we got Joe Lunardi in the bunker he's already ready to go yeah Jeff Joey's batten down the hatches watching Utah State and BYU tonight but look that the college football rankings the playoff rankings are coming out on Tuesday you and and Quint I think we'll be watching together but in separate different places within the same text to each other when it's going on and you know meet me I was right it's excited for November and the the quality of football next weekend this right here is called the first church timeout of the half 30-second timeout timeout BYU we are second timeout 30 seconds all right guys i'ma just step aside and you tell us why you've selected what you've selected oh look rod put Oregon's six yeah we've got the same top four not a problem we have a top five and he's got Georgia is the best one loss team I've got Oregon if you want to compare losses between Georgia and Oregon be my guest because Oregon wins that one how about comparing wins just go for that one too but you got quitter Wyatt why Georgia because I still think they have a path to the national championship and I don't think Oregon does well to be fair the committee's ranking the team's based on now considering teams that I think can get there so you think Oregon has a door that's gonna ever open for them because you think Georgia can get there over either Alabama or LSU yeah well they need if they win the SEC they're going and then that door swung wide open - okay so it's Betty in sampling if that happens then that means they are the one loss team and there's some two lost teams in the SEC that Oregon can jump over when you told it before the game Minnesota LSU Alabama game is not a to lost team but they will all right so you're gonna have a one loss team a one loss LSU will get in over a one loss organ with that with or without a conference championship with it to have it with the conference championship yes without it no that's where I disagree because LSU will finish higher than Auburn in their division I don't even have a head to head over them I don't think boys don't think that's gonna go over well mostly all I'm gonna say I don't think you get two teams out of one conference again anytime soon really not unless it is depth of not over a one loss conference champ that's gone out of conference to play on the road and lost in a game that contrives from quarterback and his first career game quit quit you told me before the game you're gonna put Minnesota in your top five what happened between between the let's go pull out the boat big game next Saturday at noon at ABC and ABC Sean will happen with Todd and Holly what do you think Penn State uh probably favored by won seven to ten points in that game you think I do but it's gonna take a good game the beat Minnesota at home yeah because they're well coach they're clean they just they're not gonna beat themselves it's what we'll see how they can pass protect against Penn State I think some big big difference in town yeah big difference in talent they're not as good as pen static difference in talent and if they fall behind they could have issues but if they can pass protect well what could happen on each say Minnesota beats Penn State right and then Penn State beats Ohio State and then Minnesota losses down the stretch that could really help Oregon as well as a master here is a fundamental difference that we have Q believes that you can get this year two teams out of the FCC or maybe he believes you can get two teams out of the Big Ten I just don't think that's gonna happen given the push lately for increasing the value on conference championships what about Oklahoma is a one laws team that they would still be in the Hunt has a conference champ but because they have a weak non-conference schedule that's going to hurt them that's the fundamental difference I don't believe this year given what we see right now we're gonna get two teams out of one conference a lot of people think we do because a lot of people believe the SEC will get two teams if they got they got one two six and eight as of this week Florida loses and they play each other yeah they play each other's we'll see I just I just don't think with the turnover we've had on the committee and the new committee chair who is from Oregon four new members and this push to give more value to conference championships I don't say to teams and blocking out to conferences again for four straight years but I'd love to follow up but I'm being told I have police to get the break after this tackles 89th meeting BYU and Utah State and that old wagon wheel is going to be heading to BYU 42-14 tonight is jordyn love still out there unleashing a ball down the sideline that was nearly picked by Tanner second down and here's what they're playing for the old wagon wheel now you can roll that cue or you can get two or three people and lift that 180 pound thing right I think Tonga could probably lift it himself I tried and my guess is a weighs about a hundred and eighty pounds but it's awkward to left you can't grab you by the spokes right it's an antique key wherever by the spokes that might snap class of 45 and it's not why he nay Enoch now why he named the cousin of the Boise State defensive back kokoa now I he named it's been on display in the Utah State coach's office for the last two years players walked by a daily this was important to BYU I mean we talked about it discussing it with 11 he fo you was pretty despondent about the last couple of years but they got a hands on it right now if Cougars do it was the big plays and it all started with Hall at quarterback who did not come out for the second half at all flag comes in which will be important Paul left the game after scoring a touchdown the last full possession for BYU we weren't told exactly what the injury is holding offense number 72 10-yard penalty from the previous spot second down he returned tonight after suffering a concussion a couple weeks ago in the South Florida game we hope this isn't a further concussion or any other head injury to him but we don't know exactly what the injury is not disclosed and that'll be important for BYU they'll play Liberty coming up next week and this independent schedule continues on but for Kalani Satake on the sideline for BYU he gets a chance to beat his mentor Gary Anderson his close friend his best friend as Utah state's defensive coordinator when a screen here now 18 a again it's great stories of Kalani and just to the defensive coordinator for Utah State living together they shared a place at BYU they played together they hung out together and so many tight relationships in this game and they will talk about it for a year certainly until it happens again but will they well at least one group will be talking about it as their scar furred and thinking uh this man might want to move on and not talk about it so much we need catches up with his buddy Justin a David defensive coordinator for Utah State who had bragging rights in mortal combat the video game but today on the football field it's Kalani Satake and BYU they told a great story they both corroborated this that when they were playing together at BYU they had this penchant for getting kicked out of practice together one would be covering the other they get into a fight and off you go see you later I don't know a football player who didn't get into a fight during practice that's right BYU is called their third and final time out of that time out be with you and they will relish the acquisition of the wagon wheel don't forget Tuesday college basketball season tips off 9th annual State Farm champions classic from msg Kansas and Duke Michigan State and Kentucky starting at 7:00 Eastern in the college football playoff rankings in between hosted by Reese Davis they are now posing with the wagon wheel and getting ready to take it to Provo Berkeley the trophy by the way case of Big Brother getting even with little brother it's not the way Utah State likes to hear it that's the way the BYU folks like to say it boss Mac talk during the week comments about protecting their dairy farm and BYU came flying in here and made it 42 to 14 cows ice cream a wheel and a wheel and bacon everything you could ever want and late-night college football one more interception Oh Tanner down the sideline Tanner to the 19 and a while comes all the way down field to get involved to the one final pick Tanner who's a former wide receiver and at a touchdown catch a couple years ago against Utah State rips off a pass now watch canter with his desperation throw by a guy who gets hit probably shouldn't be in the game and Tanner was thinking pick six in the game with the pick 6 and he got posed so close except love showed up to make the play young man who went into the transfer portal decided to come back to BYU has found his path and finds an interception and the wheel goes on a Rowland to Provo 42 14 the Cougars have spoken tonight [Applause] [Music] Nalani Satake says love you bro to Gary Anderson 42 14 the final score for his team [Music] there goes the wheel for BYU for quit cat stick downstairs rot Gilmore I'm Jason Benetti for a tired crew we thank you for watching and we send you to college football final from here at Logan
