the Indiana Pacers back in the playoffs taking on the Toronto Raptors Canada's team from the North shore of Lake Ontario Canada's largest city and a great view outside as we will bring you inside the NBA Playoffs beginning in a big way today here from Toronto here's a look at the brackets in the Eastern Conference a little bit later today you'll see Atlanta taking on Boston on ESPN tomorrow Cleveland taking on Detroit on ABC hello everybody I'm Mark Jones Courtside along with Doris Burke Israel Gutierrez joining us in just a bit big times here in the six as they call it Doris Burke a historic season for the Raptors 56 wins during the regular season their All-Stars playing the best ball at the right time this is an organization and a backcourt tandem that have figured out it's a regular season Demar DeRose and Kyle Lowry have gone from 48 to 49 to now a franchise record 56 regular season wins this is the stage this tandem needs to figure out there explosive Lowry is lean DeRozan specializes in getting to the free-throw line can they win a playoff series that is the question on the other side you've got a player in Paul George who is on a team in its third iteration of itself are they big are they small they're both but either way they play Paul George has got to be special as a score let's take a look at today's starting lineups brought to you by Modelo Especial in the backcourt for the Pacers George Hill and Monte Ellis who's getting the ball a lot more of late Paul George Lavoy Allen and Jan Mahin me up front for the Pacers in the backcourt for Toronto Lowry DeRozan the All-Stars Powell a rookie keep an eye on him that's an important variable skola and Valencia let's go [Music] [Music] the 2016 playoffs underway and Lowry up court for the Raptors [Applause] here's Scola former Pacer taking on his old team DeRozan being guarded by Paul George five on the shot clock that mid-range game is DeRozan's strength he misfires on the first one doors and typically if he's going left it's a pull-up jump shot if he's going right he likes to put it on the deck and get to the rack either way you've got to be disciplined defensively because DeRozan is terrific getting to the free-throw line there's Paul George kicks it out to George Hill shooting a career high from downtown but he misses the Pacers first vehicle attacks here's Lowry tries on behind me throws it up Scott Foster makes the call the foul gonna go against John Mahin me that's his first and that's going to bring him to the free throw line what a season for Kyle Lowry 21 points a game six assists per game career highs in both points rebounds and steals well we'll hear from Israel Gutierrez a little bit later on what's Driven him to this point but his off season conditioning to me was critical I mean he is so much leader how about this they measured his body fat this past week 5.0 he's lean he's explosive and he's ready for this stage down to his college weight of 193 pounds much lighter than a season ago almost 15 pounds Paul George out top good hands by Scola to deflect the pass and therein lies one of the story lines as this playoff series unfolds Doris Toronto on offense right now DeRozan draws the foul on George this Toronto team much better at the defensive end this year than a season ago right and I think you you have to point to Dwayne case who obviously has Championship experience as a coach he was the defensive coordinator for that Dallas championship in 2011. but I think the pieces they added are crucial the guys like Corey Joseph bismack biombo those are defensive oriented Stars where a year ago they had Lou Williams at gravis Vazquez you upgrade your defensive unit with defensive players and DeRozan knocks down the free throw first point of the ball game DeMar DeRozan frequently gets to the free throw line where he shoots 85 percent DeRozan second only to James Harden and because he talked about them flailing and leaning in well that's what good offensive players do you got a real glimpse into how tomorrow gets to the line the posturing has already begun from the sidelines George missing the three Mahin me missing the putback scorela with the pass to Lowry Lowry looking to push the tempo and launches a three already starting off cold for the Raptors George Hill back the other way for the Pacers and he turns it over we alluded to it a little bit earlier India Indiana has remade itself a couple of times this year Doris Frank Vogel and his front office Larry Bird the general manager decided at the beginning of the year there were going to be a pace in space smaller team then they went more traditional makes you wonder what exactly they are right now I think they're a little bit of both and obviously they start with a more traditional unit the two bigs but you will see small ball there's no question but Paul George at The Forum Rosen feeds Fallon schoonis inside and he gets the first field goal and that's probably the underrated aspect of this team there has been growth in terms of trusting that if you deliver the ball to Valen Tunis at the rack he's going to catch it and score it and finish with a high degree of efficiency Toronto Raptors just one and seven in game one playoff openers [Music] foul gonna go against Kyle Lowry his first personal foul team first Dwayne Casey the head coach of the Toronto Raptors every year he's been on the sidelines their record has improved this year franchise record 56 wins and he has to Garner some votes for Coach of the Year well I think the job he has done the job Terry Scott says Don correct top of the train go down the list Steve Kerr while George knocks down his first field goal Paul George has struggled against the Raptors this year averaging a little over 16 points a game during the regular season [Applause] Powell takes Monte Ellis off the bounce Norman Powell is a rookie out of UCLA four-year player starting for a playoff team that won 56 game stores that was our question right coming in because damari Carroll has now kind of launched himself back into discussion where you know do you start the youngster and according to Dwayne Casey he's like listen we're playing good basketball Powell has been terrific for us obviously the numbers backed that up over the last 12 games and damari Carroll still has a minutes restriction and so it gives Dwayne a little bit better use of those minutes by sort of Staggering them and the beauty of Demari Carroll to me you can fit in Mark did you see that on Tunis and he draws the foul on that one tomorrow Carol is a guy you don't have to run place for right he is going to be a guy that is going to guard he's going to hustle he's going to guard those Elite guys on the wing that you need to handle I know it's a difficult thing to try to reinsert somebody at this point but because of what this guy does I think it makes it a little bit easier he was the big acquisition during the off season signing a 55 million dollar free agent deal with the Raptors Carol formerly of the Atlanta Hawks missed about two-thirds of the regular season with Hannah fasciitis and a knee injury is Valen schoonis knocks down his first free throw there's a look at Carol who's expected to play about 20 minutes tonight yeah this is problematic if you're Indiana because you've already put Toronto in the bonus with 9-16 left and one of the things Frank Global talked about was being disciplined defensively and not fouling them well his teams got a long way to go and the bonus put in Toronto at the free throw line all the rookie looking Poise knocks down the free throws in Toronto out to a good start here a whistle and that's going to be an offensive foul against me [Applause] that's his first well not surprisingly it's the old soul right a little bit of rotation defensively and that's Luis Scola just team-minded do whatever you need to do recognizing his teammates trouble perfectly so he scored on was the center of attention Yesterday by the Toronto media and other assorted media after practice they were basically looking for him to debrief everybody on the Pacers with some special intelligence former member of the Indiana Pacers a season ago [Applause] here's DeRozan working against Paul George [Applause] Turner's checked into the ball game during that last break that was a foul against mahindi his second Ellis with a nice dime inside for the bucket to Allen that starts with the defensive play though Paul George right that Elite defensive ability in a pick and roll guard in what has become an area of growth for DeRozan getting around the screen blocking the shot and getting them out into early offense that was nicely done Pacers did an easy one here's Lowry still trying to find the mark rebounded by Allen Monte Ellis support Ellis is a guy that led the Mavericks in scoring last year [Music] guy that has had the ball in his hands a lot more in the latter part of the season for Indiana not the Miss it's Kyle Lowry all right that one bounce out of bounds off the hands of Powell let's watch Paul George in a pick and roll just gets hung up briefly on the screen doesn't give up on the play Mark just continues to battle gets it at peace and that gets him out into semi-transition little two on one opportunity there's George Hill shooting a career high from downtown this year and On Cue George Hill Hits the three shot 41 percent during the regular season well you talk about the consummate pro who just looks at a coach and says all right you want me to move to the two and spot up that's a 40 guy I'll do that tied at seven on the pick and pop valanciunis knocks out the Baseline jump shot they know what Dorsey you saw a little bit of a sigma move there and there's a reason why it's been tutored by the former great at the Seattle Sonics I just want to see the reverse pivot you're gonna bring up Sigma let me see the reverse pivot a lot of contact no whistle Ellis looking for the call Norman Powell getting up slowly thumbs up limping yeah maybe a charlie horse he looks like he took a pretty good shot right at The Rim it wasn't pretty but Luis Scola gets on the board and Powell is motioning to Dwayne Casey for someone to take him out of the game he looks very immobile right now and Ellis took advantage of it well Ella saw him waving his fingers at the bench as if to say come get me so right away Ellis goes okay you're hurting I'm going right to the rack two-point ball game you see Powell the rookie out of UCLA Olympic Rosen working against Paul George it's going to be an offensive foul against DeMar DeRozan watch the youngster Powell sort of signaling at the bench this is where he takes the shot and goes down I I think it is a charlie horse I took I think he took a knee to the thigh and he's like hey get me come get me and with that looks like he's going to try and maybe work it out here Doris and keep moving probably not a bad idea having played I mean yeah if you sit down for any long stretch with a charlie horse Tennessee as it tightens up on you plus he's young he's not already 22. himself last year at the NBA draft combine there's Paul George Mount DeRozan Garden isn't it interesting that they assigned to Rose and the Guard Paul George Miles Turner inside and he draws the foul Miles Turner who was the Eastern Conference rookie of the month for February looking out of Texas we'll go to the free throw line things up Turner shooting 73 percent strike what do you see so far oh I love Miles Turner I love this young man you talked about six foot eleven 240 pounds can run like a deer I know there were some questions coming out of Texas is is running Styles problematic I tell you what he could shoot it to 20 feet he's a terrific offensive weapon I know he's got to be more consistent but I love his future mark the Raptors call timeout after the Miles Turner misses he's a rookie he'll learn playoffs are a little different from Jurassic Park the center and more of the Raptors from Israel Gutierrez thanks Mark and kicking off the playoffs is something these Raptors are used to winning on the other hand hasn't really been part of the equation so why are this post season's Raptors different well you can start with simple motivation after being swept from the playoffs last year by the Wizards in a shocker Kyle Lowry dedicated himself to losing weight into DeMar DeRozan focus on becoming a better leader and an all-around player then there's a subtle but defensive minded roster additions bismack biombo Corey Joseph Demar Carroll and rookie Norman Powell all helped Toronto become a top 11 defensive team to go with their top five offense but mostly it's a comfort level these raptors have they know who they are individually and as a group they're comfortable in your own skin is a phrase you'll hear a lot with these Raptors a franchise that's never won a best of seven playoff series Kyle Lowry says mentally he's a whole different person this postseason the mentality of these Raptors guys just win a playoff series and Lowry Israel struggling to start game one here Paul George meanwhile Miss the layup and stolen with the rebound yep keep in mind the Raptors have lost six consecutive playoff games going back to two years ago in the playoffs against Brooklyn wow Paul George took a pretty good screen from Jonas Valentino so you can get the foul call on one and then the screen was pretty tight Miles Turner has already hijacked two shots for Toronto well that's huge because John Bohemia I talked about the foul trouble for Indiana early putting them in the bonus but Jan mahimi's got two miles Turner now draws the Jonas Valentine's this time he's done a good job through a couple possessions Ellis south top for the Pacers tied at 11 past the Midway point of the first quarter Turner firing knocked out of bounds it'll come back the other way Toronto Raptors basketball big day of NBA playoffs on ESPN and ABC after this one get a chance to tune into the reigning Champs the Golden State Warriors taking on the Houston Rockets Rosenau top off the Valencia screen Scola a prolific three-point shooter this season rebounded by Valencia missed a wide open Score Lowry from Markham somewhere out of bounds and it'll be Indiana basketball well that's been a pretty fiscal battle with the onus valenciunis and Miles Turner something to keep an eye on as we've come down the stretch in this first quarter something else to keep an eye on Doris the starting backcourt for Toronto combined oh for six if not made shots Paul George working against DeRozan George had it had to go halfway down and out one thing to think about DeMar DeRozan length father sent Paul George has got that assignment Scola got blocked at the rim and here's Paul George that's going to be a discontinued dribble or bombing or carrying or whatever we want to call it but you know what just seeing Paul George on the court is a victory in itself when you go back to August of 2014. I was there in Las Vegas Nevada USA Basketball training camp an open scrimmage James Harden tried to make the layup George went up the block it landed badly and literally snapped his leg in two near the ankle and through some arduous and determined rehab he's back on the court and playing really Elite level basketball [Music] [Applause] that gets a reaction from the crowd they stood up because Jonas valanciunis on the weak side Blast has been so active that shot a little bit after the Rookie's hand I said it that battle has been terrific I mean they've been up the floor about four times together it's been super physical and they'll jump it up Dorsey look at the pace of this ball game so far very physical game who does it favor I mean it's shooting the Indiana Pacers at this point and again they they did not start strong they had to absorb some some foul trouble but Toronto's missed their last six shots and here comes Demario Carroll can he change it for him isovation for Carol as he comes into the ball game for the Raptors he said on the shotgun Laurie Carroll was the major acquisition for messiah jiri the GM during the off season as DeRozan Falls with the basketball and he's tied up by the Pacers Paul George and Miles Turner but back to Carroll well he has two thirds of the Season yeah oh yeah I mean the knee has been problematic and now this is still the minutes restriction he still absorbs some swelling post game but so much of how he reacts Mark to his playing time type of guy though that his teammates say is low maintenance doesn't need a lot of plays called for him so the transition back into action has been pretty smooth I'll knock out of bounds again off the Jump and Tony brother says Toronto basketball yeah Israel Gutierrez is talking about what's different about the Toronto Raptors aside from their personnel what what makes them more equipped to win a playoff series well this has not been their Pace their stars are not getting to their game at this point are they mature can they keep working three for three and he's finally on the board that's what you're waiting for right there's two guys who have been so explosive to get loose our shot at well from downtown this season Ellis almost got trapped in the corner George with plenty of time on the clock and Ellis couldn't get the bounce and palan schoonis already with seven rebounds for the Raptors Carroll this place would have erupted and he made that one got another opportunity the Junkyard Dog is back folks and we're back after this come back everyone to Toronto Ontario Canada the Raptors the home crew up by five game one between the Raptors and the Pacers and the guy that called the six God the Courtside Drake the hotline hasn't gone bling yet but it sounds like it's about to as we check out today's winning ingredients brought to you by McDonald's we focus on the back quarter a couple of good friends of Drake's Indiana yeah Indiana wins on the defensive end of the floor and look at what they have done to a tandem that has averaged 45 points between him a combined one for eight keep this in mind Mark remember at 9 16 they went to the free throw line they haven't been sent so they're guarding like that without Talent Miles Turner made an acrobatic move but couldn't finish it good resistance and health by Patterson Ty Lawson is checked into the game meanwhile for the Pacers during that break along with Rodney Stuckey and Solomon Hill who's been shooting the ball well a little isolation for Fallon schoonis love that he didn't settle you saw him twice he lifted like he was going to go to his very efficient mid-range but he said you know what I've got a rookie on me I'm gonna take him down on the Block nicely done by valenciunas a seven to nothing Toronto run has them leading by seven George on the drive draws the foul against damari Carroll watch the man who has worked with Jack Sigma on the post game just keep working use a nice efficient dribble turn over that left shoulder closer to the rack led the Raptors with 22 double doubles this year there's a look at the former great Jack Sigma and the Seattle sucks tutoring Alan schutas as we take a look at the upcoming schedule of this series Indiana Toronto game two will be on NBA TV Monday then they go back to Indianapolis for Thursday and Saturday and then if necessary game five here in Toronto dates and time pardon me uh to be determined the times to be determined amen 26-29 amen to the start of the playoffs yes LeBron James has never lost in the first round 10-0 in his career will Steph Curry become the first unanimous MVP Lots will be determined over the next eight weeks we'll see that Golden State Warriors team next on ABC at 3 30. off the turnover here's Ty Lawson quickly up to Stucky blocked by Patterson oh he sent it the other way and checked into pounds but George took it back and scores the bucket Paul George looking like his old self there [Applause] boy bodies strewn across the court it is very physical out here today or it's getting back up Lowry off the Valencia screen got the switch on him doesn't take advantage now they goes back to him over Turner but couldn't hit it he creates an opportunity there he had eight rebounds prior to that position Indy as a team had eight now he's out rebounding them by one Stellar Stateline already for the big fell out of Lithuania Corey Joseph comes into the ball game for Toronto guy that grew up about an hour east of here with a career-high 23.5 per game really good use of that mid post screen Stuckey gets hung up on it [Applause] [Music] Lawson crosses up Joseph a little pick and pop with Turner and that's what he does well you said it all right Bird said coming out of their training camp that he might be their best shooter that should be in that size or that kind of skill still getting better he got off to a slow start this year missed the first 20 games of the season for the wrist injury pardon me a thumb injury [Music] draws the foul against Solomon Hill [Applause] Mark Carroll uh seems to be moving like his old self so far here in the early going he played in just three of the last five regular season games they didn't want to play him in back to back games and risk re-injury high in terms of minutes total in those few games mark But you're right I mean laterally he looks good he doesn't look like he's fearful when he puts it on the deck he was the guy that was a huge Cog for the Atlanta Hawks in their historic season last year when they won the East getting 60 games during the regular season Arrow knocks down the second foul shot 35 seconds to go in the first quarter a physically played first quarter Lawson with a step back and man that was a good acquisition in March for this team and then he gets hurt almost right away but he could see what they want from him he gives him Pace on that second unit the pick and roll with Turner very good about a six second difference between the shot and the gamepl [Music] he's got a championship ring as a member of the San Antonio Spurs seven seconds to go a foul to give and Joseph fouls Lawson a smart move by the Raptors says Casey called for that foul from the sidelines [Music] all right [Music] Toronto Raptors trying to get a game one W for the first time in a long time Turner launches George missed the putback how important is game one well the winner goes on to win the series 77 percent of the time Paul George straighting things out with his teammates as you would imagine an emotional game for both these teams important to get that first W back to Toronto after this [Music] absolutely irradiance luminous cool day here in Toronto Ontario Canada 2419 the home crew leading by five as we get started here in the second quarter the chance to speak with Frank Vogel the head coach of the Pacer assistant Gutierrez did a few moments ago and Doris interesting observations yeah let some technical audio issues but uh basically is he asked him how he thought they responded early as you see the combined DeRozan and Lowry shooting just two pretend he said one we we managed to run we've got a state disciplined defensively and then the last thing he said was got to keep Valentines off the bus got nine Boards out to us off that Rodney stuck he miss bismack biyombo got the rebound saw a lot of playing time this year for the Raptors when Valencia was out with that broken hand but just a terrific pickup by Messiah Jerry I think biombo as a communicator as a defensive anchor and rim protector shade Lowry and Scola get their opportunity to rest to start the second I think biombo's been crucial he and Corey Joseph to me quietly to unbelievable Acquisitions upgrade on the defensive end of the floor on that second unit that last foul was against Beyond though his first you're Stuckey Cross Court to a wide open tie Lawson and Lawson there's a whistle first and a foul gonna go against Terrace Ross but back to Rodney Stuckey his comment a little bit earlier this week kind of got a lot of attention he said you know the Raptors are a great team but we feel like we match up well with them and we have some great players too we also have some great players that come off the bench raised a few eyebrows of the underlying thinking and feeling by the Pacers that the Raptors might be a little bit of a a softer 2C here's Stucky tipped up and in by Sultan Hill how is everybody going to be so salty to start the playoffs you have Dwayne Casey complaining about the 12 30 star feeling like 56 wins they should be in contact you and I are happy oh geez you're in the playoffs guys here's Ross out front only six on the shot clock Terence Ross missed the hook shot and the Pacers with a chance to cut this lead to one hill with a nice show and go good feed to Stucky inside for the bucket well that's CJ Miles game right there I mean you know this is a guy who's gonna shoot and he's a little bit streaky but how about that extra pass to get a better look at the Pacers back in the playoffs after missing the postseason last year that's gonna be an offensive foul against Terence Ross and he's got to be carefully place that ball in the court very hard and through the attention of the officials that's going to be his second personal foul I think uh Vogel was talking about guys flailing let's see oh it's Stucky gonna sell that Ross did have that elbow out there a little bit Racers with a chance to take the lead miles from Deep I was a little bit of a streaky shooter at times here's Corey Joseph boy he got the free pass all the way to the bucket so interesting you're seeing more and more teams right screen higher on the floor get that guard going downhill earlier and think about the speed Joseph would get to add before he hits the timeline Lawson with a wild shot and a miss Raptors push it up Ross wasn't expecting the ball that's going to be a kick against the Raptors let's watch Corey Joe so I mean I think he feels like they're not paying attention defensively he looks like he's going to use green for patch of blows right by Ty Lawson part of that upgrade by GM Messiah jury signed a four-year 32 million dollar deal during the free agent period last year [Music] Toronto's own and this is Solomon Hill from DP really caught fire late in the season for them and another three-point threat [Applause] High to 26 in game one in the second quarter [Music] talking about the small lineup here to the Pacers you got CJ Miles at the floor live on the shot clock Joseph hits the three Joseph already with seven points he's their most experienced guy in terms of number of playoff games looks very comfortable to start those are bonus points for the Raptors with Lowry on the bench getting a breather tipped up and in by Miles Turner and the Raptors leading by one [Applause] foreign [Applause] not a threat out there Carol rising up for the mid-range Jumper in rhythm [Music] leading by three Stucky had it knocked out of bounds actually lost the handle and turns it over time out of the floor the Raptors lead by three when we come back [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right thanks a lot stage it'll be interesting to see how much emotional Capital Golden State still has left after achieving that record-breaking regular season Kyle Lowry meanwhile wired for sound let's listen in back watch it back watch it back watch your back do you play White it's all right keep playing flowery uh said that he wanted to work on becoming a better leader and part of that was uh is communicating with his teammates and the one thing you hear about Lowry is that he's the type of guy that if nobody was watching and someone said hey let's go run one and play some ball he'd be the first one to grab a ball and say let's go he loves the game he loves the game loves it has to take her tips on occasion from his wife which is an interesting deal sayana former player in St Joe's the school's all-time leading scorers for the women's program DJ miles missing from Deep [Music] Diana not afraid of uh you think Kyle that scouting reports defense once in a while here's Carol out top 10 on the shot clock Remsen and here comes Lawson Lawson spent the first part of the season with the Rockets got blocked by biambo [Applause] trademark there with the finger wag afterwards why not I just completely erases that little Trimble drive from Lawson [Applause] he does such a great job to me this map diambo on the backside of that defense communicating miles missing again so they're getting the streaky CJ Miles so far thanks are shooting just 36 from the field Patterson on the drive couldn't finish with the left [Applause] Solomon Hill out of the pack Stuckey got caught up passed up the shot twice and Lowry knocked out of bounds it'll be Indiana basketball DeRozan coming back into the ball game for the Raptors one of the prevailing story lines so far is the Toronto backcourt is just two of ten combined shootings apparel going back to the bench for Dwayne Casey one of the things that bothers DeRozan and this guy has had a terrific year so the franchise record for free throws made free throws attempted you think back to to when they lose to Washington Otto Porter chucked him right length all over Paul George has drawn the assignment for long stretches today let's see how DeRozan chooses to operate when they get the ball miles inside to mahini who couldn't finish miles got stripped on the putback to tennis and Joseph out of the pack foreign tough pass inside never quite made it knocked out of bounds it'll stay Toronto basketball [Applause] earlier he filled in as a starter for a couple of dozen games why Valen schoonis was injured out with that broken hand did a great job especially at the defensive end [Applause] nice feet inside to Joseph and he's got nine the leading scorer in the ball game for Toronto that's terrific underneath out of balance execution clear one side of the floor and DeRozan puts it right where it needs to be [Applause] [Music] Solomon Hill from Deep Lowry with the board [Applause] Patterson yes [Music] presentation of the NBA Playoffs is brought to you by Burger King get five delicious items for four dollars only at Burger King look at our Corona Extra performers and the Raptors in lieu of getting points from Lowry and DeRozan getting big help from these guys balance was a monster on the glass they went to him a couple times in the post I think the bench marked the Toronto bench has got 18 points their starters have got 18 points and right now Corey Joseph is getting the better of Ty Lawson is not checked thank you well last year against the Wizards Kyle Lowry shot just 32 percent from the Sunday our NBA playoff coverage continuing as Andre Drummond in the Pistons facing off against King James and the Cavaliers in game one of the series at three Eastern Time on ABC coverage begins with NBA Countdown presented by Straight Talk Wireless at 2 30 and is streaming live on watch ESPN in the ESPN app and coming up on the two at a halftime safe steal the crew in the studio defending Lowry and DeRozan how that's working out so far and the Warriors title defense begins at three o'clock Eastern can you imagine how happy Coach Collins is watching these two stars be guarded like what makes a coach happier than that yeah he's about to explode four point Toronto lead [Applause] Paul George in isolation missed the reverse layup about a nine second difference between the shot and game little two for one situation if the Raptors want it and George with the steal great save to Ellis Ellis on the three on two blocks by biyombo but put back in by Hill bismack biyombo with a second block Raptors now with 13 seconds to get one off [Applause] [Music] two here got into the pain and draws the foul tripped up by Monte Ellis that's the first pardon me second it's after the foul Fest to start the game spent the entire second quarter not Fallon being disciplined defensively like Frank Vogel implored had a foul to give a call out time I'm not called by Dwayne Casey we'll take one too folks stick around we'll be right back brain rolling on today three more games to go Canada look at the Canadian national exhibition fairgrounds nearby where the Raptors have their practice facility the Raptors home team leading by two trying to rewrite their history in terms of the postseason make it a little bit more favorable as we take a look at today's first half stats brought to you by Kia and the numbers that jump off the page the bench points a big factor for the Raptors in the first half they also outre founded the Pacers by a margin of 33-20 Mark Jones Courtside along with Doris Burke Israel Gutierrez joining us in just a bit we talked about it before the game the Toronto Raptors have not done well in game ones of opening round series and they got an added bit of help from their bench in the first half I think you can point to a couple of factors for them Jonas valanciunis I thought was absolutely tremendous for the Raptors just dominating the glass being physical let's take a look at our State Farm exists to assist in some of the kind of pivotal plays that really illustrate your avoid their doors a little pick and roll situation they have greater trust in his ability to catch and finish this one he elected to reject a mid-range jumper goes right to the rack against the rookie and I thought the benches you just noted Mark including Corey Joseph who got the much better end of the battle with Ty Lawson two pick and roll situations plays at his Pace navigates things perfectly and in support of two guys who are well underneath their season averages as you look at the combined points for DeRozan and Lowry it's incredible the assistant they got from other guys meanwhile the Indiana Pacers their star Paul George had a very uh inauspicious beginning in the first half just two for nine from the field and that kind of Trends in the same direction that it's been doing all season with him during the Raptors he has not done well against Toronto and for more let's go to Israel thanks Mark I talked to Dwayne Casey coming out of the break here he said they basically have to make better decisions with the ball because a lot of Indiana's offense is coming off of turnovers he said Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan have been involved in the offense again just need to make better decisions and a couple quick notes this is the first lead they've had at halftime [Music] one and the 15 rebounds by Jonas valanciunis the most in an NBA playoff game and a half since in the last 10 seconds excuse me in the last 10 years the Raptors are trying to snap their six-game losing streak into post-season well it was interesting talking to Frank Vogel because obviously you start the discussion with the guards but when I mentioned Valentino's he kind of looked and shook his head because in one win he got Jan mahimi in foul trouble he's been problematic for them in this matchup all year Valentine to Ellis on the spin draws the hit and we'll go to the free throw line the foul is going to go against Kyle Lowry and the incredulous Kyle Lowry can't figure out why exactly it was called on him that's gonna be his second personal foul see both as him as head coach Dwayne Casey their palms Skyward saying we don't see the foul but Ellis hit the free throw line a 79 free throw shooter for the Pacers a tough start here in game one for Lowry to Izzy's point mark about the turnovers 12 of the points from Indiana came off of their turnovers so see if they make better decisions here in the second half Toronto we are tied at 45 just underway here in the third quarter and sold out here Canada Center game one Pacers and Raptors and Rosen went into a lot of traffic and lost the handle George for three and a good start in the third quarter for Paul George and that is the first lead of the ball game for the Indiana Pacers okay so let me ask you this if you're trying to exercise some first rounds Demons of your Toronto and Indiana puts it to you to start the half what's the maturity level here Alan chunas missing the layup off the feed from Lowry that's a great point for us because at some point if they fall behind late last thing you want is one of those Here We Go Again Vibes that's going to be a foul against stolen his first personal second team foul here in the period [Applause] it was the Pacers that came out in the first quarter with an inordinate amount of fouls to start the game the Raptors win the bonus early but so far it's the Raptors with a couple quick fouls in the third quarter Norman Powell the rookie out of UCLA got the start tonight [Applause] hours class deflected and here's Ellis lethal in the open court Monta Ellis missing how back the other way it's a three on two for Toronto it converts [Music] [Applause] most coaches might be a little nervous to us that you're starting forward against the Pacers in the playoffs as a rookie but it's different [Music] another three on two Powell makes a tough shot wow that's for Dwayne Casey told us this guy doesn't comport himself like a rookie this is the value of the four-year guys right you play at a high level at UCLA and have some big games in your career and you're older nice feet inside to Allen from ball George for the layup well given that the starting front court for Indiana did not score in the second quarter that's bonus baskets there by Helen [Music] how are you working against George Hill [Music] it's good health by Mahine me but Valencia rolled nicely missed twice behind me battling and the Pacers come up with a loose ball off the scramble and shoot us in the process getting his 17th rebound pass intercepted how are you going up and down turn it over Monte Ellis the one-man fast break great fake but couldn't finish the layup it's a full court three on two drill score with the score I would not say it's been auspicious basketball to start the third some Miss chippy some missed opportunities but you've regained the lead by getting out transitions Scola runs rim to rim Lowry puts it in his hands right where he can catch and try to finish Scola the member of the gold medal winning Argentina national team back in 2004. came off a great summer Last Summer with the Argentine national team they qualified for the Olympics he's figured out how to morph his game to the modern NBA right made a career high in threes [Music] George off the screen and that's going to be an offensive foul against mahindi I called him for an illegal screen and that's going to be his fourth foul that gets the rookie Miles Turner Off the Bench for Vogel so both Biggs with some foul issues but he may only played six minutes 32 seconds in the first half and now he's got to go out again [Music] Ronald leading by one [Music] Little Euro Step move and draws the foul on the rookie Miles Turner [Applause] Rosen the second leading scorer in Toronto Raptors history behind only Vince Carter [Music] it's about the great career that he's had so far in Toronto glad you said because it has not been a career day he and Lowry have more combined turnovers than field goals [Applause] four for 18. of course a little nervousness for some of the fan base here because DeMar DeRozan will be a free agent July 1st and there's a team where he's from out in Los Angeles with a lot of capital and a missing Star as in Kobe Bryant has retired a history of Big Time Stars leaving the organization as well this is a very attractive destination Turner with nothing left on the shot clock and he turns it over Raptors cranking up their defense on that sequence team that we chronicled a lot better this year defensively they finished number 11 in defensive efficiency and that therein lies the big difference between a year ago and now throws it out to Scola DeRozan the block out by Turner on valenshunis keeping him off the boards George looking for the contact made the bucket anyway start a percolate got that three in transition does a nice job using his body to Shield the defender played at Fresno State [Applause] Valencia squares up and misses everything but drew the foul on Turner it's been a while since we've seen the onus Valencia this confident and this productive for the Toronto Raptors I think it's a little bit of time experience in the league I think the other part of that though Mark and you tell me what you think of this is the faith that Lowry and derosian have showed in them play through the post on occasion let them feel it let them go to work and look at the activity level he gave them in that first half he's inspired a lot of confidence and his teammates and you go back to his Improvement which really started last year Dwayne Casey in the athletic training staff sent Valencia out to the University of Oregon to work with a track coach there to work on his running and his speed and his form and then this year they're bringing as you said Jack Sigma to tutor him on his post game in his mid-range game and here's a young player that's already signed to a long-term deal that is one of the good cornerstones for this franchise news the three he's big he's tough I dig every repetition he gets better 18 boards Ellis with the nice feed Allen couldn't cash Powell tripped up Alan schunis thought about it DeRozan one-on-one against Paul George 10 on the shot clock for Lowry who backs it out goes downhill finds balance it Pacers [Applause] that's what you're talking about exactly that just growth right faith for Lowry understanding valent Tunis let me go set the screen on the left hand side of the floor because if I said it left I roll left and that's my strength that's out of the floor well it's time to check out today's home court advantage brought to you by Lowe's and men in front of your TV and spend the day folks look at this got this one here in Toronto then over on ABC at three o'clock it's golden state who's had a great advantage against Houston and everybody else and the Dallas Mavericks is it that's our night cap they finished the season on a nice roll well not surprisingly where Carlisle is one of the outstanding coaches in this league and Dirk Nowitzki how about that guy at this age just continuing to be that prolific on the offensive end he talked about the free agency of DeMar DeRozan how about Oklahoma City Kevin Durant enters yes as a unrestricted free agent come July four scoring titles one NBA Finals appearance with Oklahoma City back in 2012. I'll tell you he and Russell at such a high level Russell Westbrook the NBA's leader and triple doubles this season That's The nightcap on ESPN full day of basketball and ABC and ESPN [Music] George lost his balance Hill on the drive draws the foul on Norman Powell that's going to be Powell's first personal foul George Hill the other end of it I talked about Powell and speaking of Oklahoma City Norman Powell who was telling me yesterday in practice that he's received a couple of encouraging text messages in the last couple of days from former UCLA Alum Russell Westbrook Tom hey man go out there and stay in your lane play and roll and do your thing against the Pacers let's see a kind of camaraderie and looking out for a rook like that I love that I love watching Russell go back to UCLA and take in those college games just Pride George Hill meanwhile goes one for two another board the only smile on Shield is now 19 boards Mark that's the most in Raptors playoff history [Applause] DeRozan a little bit strong the struggles of DeRozan and Lowry continued to Rosen and Lowry now four for 20 from the field combined boy Allen on the pick and roll missed an easy one [Applause] foul gonna go against the Raptors and pardon me that's going to be against Miles Turner he can't believe it Scott Foster says yes you that's going to be his third he'll watch the left-hand side of your screen Valanciunas has just pursued the ball and so he was the aggressor and I think that's why Turner gets called for the foul is wearing that protective wrap on his left hand that's the hand that he broke earlier this season [Music] whistle and an offensive foul good defense by Paul George it was interesting Paul George told us he didn't think he was back to the level where he was defensively before but you couldn't tell by that sequence course well that's anticipation yeah he's got Great Lengths good he did not think laterally he was as explosive but that's just textbook textbook defense a couple of Los Angeles guys going head-to-head [Applause] Toronto leading by three here in game one thank you Acer's back in the playoffs after missing the party last year and Paul George draws the foul really was an apparition last year for the entire Pace organization missing the Playoffs Paul George only playing those six games at the end of the regular season last year it's the fourth foul on that one shoots when David West elected to go chase a championship with San Antonio you ship Roy Hibbert out if you're Larry Bird you say Okay looks like the league is trending towards small pace and space you adjust as an organization [Applause] attendance here today along with Kevin Pritchard right there a couple of members of the Pacer front office gosh Frank Vogel because he had a couple extra minutes with him pregame and so can you beat Golden State playing any other way than small ball do you have to beat him and he said you got to be able to switch one through five basically and no one has found an answer for the Draymond Green but amazing how the league has reacted to Golden State's success with that small ball thank you Lowry off the weave drives it in and over George Hill for the bucket nowry with his third field goal first leading by three [Applause] George great pass to Turner but he got ripped by DeRozan Lowry Cross Court Powell he's been knocking those down that one rattles halfway down and out he had a 30-point game to end the regular season against Brooklyn I could have bounds it'll be Pacer basketball you talked about Golden State and how to beat them and vogels take a moment ago you'll see Golden State next against ABC and you'll see Detroit against Cleveland tomorrow on ABC Stan Van Gundy the coach of the Pistons as George knocks down the Baseline jumper says he told me you can't beat Golden State by playing like Golden State yeah it's got to be something different again that death lineup in total minutes it's not a ton with Draymond Green at the five assistant nobody's had an answer in those minutes tie up underneath [Applause] and it'll be Pacer basketball the Raptors leading by one with 421 to go and the third quarter of play the Raptors looking to take game one ESPN's presentation of the NBA Playoffs brought to you by the new hardest working collection from Old Spice legendary protection for legendary men DeMar DeRozan rested in two of the last four regular season games city was physically ready but he's had a subpar performance so far to us let's give some credit to to Paul George and the entire Indiana team defensively because they're making life difficult remember some discipline after the battle Fest it was the first five minutes of the first quarter they have done a very good job tagging him off of screens staying between him and the basket and keeping him off the free-throw line most importantly 10 on the shot clock Powell over to Lowry [Music] the biyombo screen Jacks the three doors I'm going to say it now we've got a sample size five for 24 shooting for Lowry and DeRozan with the five for 23. this is starting to look like Washington last year this is why I said you know you're exercising demons you've not performed well in the postseason Dave on they've understood Mark what it takes to win the regular season this is a different stage Ellis for three and the Pacers regained the lead and you wonder if some of that talking from from Rodney Stuckey was an attempt to get in their head we like the match-up well they can't blame it on Paul Pierce this year because he's not here he's not in Brooklyn or Washington D Rosen Sports of Powell spin move left the floater short but got the rebound the Rosen for three [Applause] battle underneath and the foul gonna go against the rookie Miles Turner and that's his fourth they're gonna let pal out Corey Joseph who was terrific in the first half is going to come in [Applause] [Music] goes to the free throw line shooting two uh 63 free throw shooter this guy was a cast off by Charlotte in the summer in the off season and boy you really have to credit Messiah jiri who going back to when biyombo played in the Nike hoop Summit a few years ago really liked Beyond Boze game well I think you have to credit Messiah jury for a few things first of all he left No Doubt with this group that Dwayne Casey was his coach and that he was under no duress and has reiterated that regardless of the performance in this postseason Dwayne is safe so stability at the top the message is to the players don't point fingers we're in this together and they better make sure their endings together over this final 15. well George starting to heat up he started percolate 12 points now for Paul George after having just six points in the first half going two for nine Racers back in front [Applause] Rosen bump and a foul gonna go against Jordan Hill who just came into the game let's watch Paul George working without the basketball here just gonna he's thinking about going to the opposite side of the side of the floor instead he let her off had come back to the strong side and delivers that three shot that right in damari Carroll's kitchen meanwhile DeRozan going to the foul line and 85 free throw shooter would you say Mark that that he does not look like one of the things Paul George said to us is I don't feel anywhere as athletic or as explosive but and I said to him I think what happened was you got out of the gate so fast people expected that to sort of be sustained he said this has been a long year for him yeah that's a great Point Doris he came out of the gate in November was the player of the month and the month he was one of the top three players best players in the league average 26 in the month of November long year and asked him if he was going to play for the Olympic team this summer he was still non-committal on that [Music] here's Paul George [Music] five on the shot clock for the Pacers Stuckey Solomon Hill draws the foul with 0.7 to go on the shot clock Solomon Hill is going to go to the foul line the call against Corey Joseph that's his second Louis bail him out a possession going nowhere [Applause] solomonville and 86 percent foul shooter averaging 4.2 points per game that's what he did during the regular season against Toronto well let's take a look at the upcoming National TV schedule a Full Slate of playoff games across the NBA networks on ABC later today Houston Golden State game one tomorrow on TNT Charlotte Miami Memphis San Antonio Portland Clippers then NBA TV Monday has game two of this series for one of these games log on to nba.com or visit the NBA app what about the Miami Heat melting down in Boston in the final game of the regular season losing a 23-point lead but still getting that number three seed watching an incredible tribute to the organization absorbing all of that [Music] the losses physically that they've had and Chris Bosh addressing the teams and telling them he'll be out for the playoffs we're sending very good thoughts to Chris and his wife Adrian and their children yeah very uh unfortunate situation and at some point you realize his health is really literally much bigger than basketball [Music] and they're going to go to the monitor Scott Foster is and see if this is a three or a two-point attempt on Lowry well we spoke with Paul George a little bit earlier about his journey back to the court after the laborious rehab in the wake of that horrific injury here's what he had to say but this team missing the playoffs last year and have an opportunity to be back this year and getting ourselves back this year um you know I just felt came a long ways and I'm not even fully uh who I was uh athletic wise and strength wise but to get my team back to this this point and um you know we got guys that's been there we got guys have been to the Eastern Conference Finals so we know what it takes at this point well George former winner of the most improved player award two-time all-nba player all defensive team member as well Frank Vogel says hey I think he's the best two-way player in the league the effects winning on both ends the floor certainly I mean think about when it was Indiana in Miami in the Eastern Conference Finals back to back years [Applause] one point ball game as we approach two minutes to go in the third quarter Patrick Patterson getting ready to come into the game for Toronto George got the switch working against Corey Joseph here that's Advantage Pacers [Music] a wide open three and George knocks it down PG-13 and yeah you might need some Parental Guidance to watch him right now he's starting to heat up 14 points in the third quarter for ball George [Music] [Applause] okay Frozen with a long two Harold with the board DeRozan punches it home [Applause] [Music] Lawson Hill wasn't ready for the pass from Lawson and they turn it over Swatch a Raptor's possession that doesn't look like it's going anywhere but off the offensive rebound the punch by DeMar DeRozan beats Hill along the Baseline nobody on the back side [Applause] and Chris Bosh of course the leading scorer that's very Vince like yes George with the steal and he slams at home a 16-point third quarter for Paul George Who seems to have exercised his demons against this Raptors team hey look at the defensive tie Lawson gonna force a timeout call by the Raptors and a real frustration by Dwayne Casey Paul George is flat taking over this basketball game raptors have no answer gets out in the passing Lane strips at their middle he knows they're going to DeRozan Paul George yes sir welcome back [Music] view of the so far indelible images of this first playoff game of the season in the NBA Paul George coming alive here in the third quarter the Pacers got their first lead in the second half here there's a look at scoring by quarters up to 22 now [Applause] with a total of 20. [Music] [Applause] [Music] 10 on the shot clock [Music] the defense by the Pacers George forces a tough turnaround and Damar founded at the other end that's the one you'll live with because because Paul George has been there on the catch every single time just trying to make DeRozan take contested twos yeah George off the screen Jordan Hill inside Stucky from downtown Patterson clears and the Raptors gonna go for one trying tied up this time it's sucky on DeRozan got to his spot but he couldn't cash and that's the end of three quarters of play now DeMar DeRozan is capable of making contested shots Paul George trying to make him take contested twos and keep him off the free-throw line so he's there on the catch keeps a pinned on the Baseline but how about that a little separation that is a big time shot all balance delivers welcome back to Toronto Dwayne Paul George got going there in that third quarter how do you get back to containing him well we got to get him to his body most of all we got to take care of the basketball he's going to make some plays and can't over after that but most of all we've got to get quality shots we got to take care of the basketball make a pass and make a pass get the ball to inside our third offense is generated off our turnovers a lot of it is I'm guessing that's a lot of the reason why you're starting backwards struggling how do you get them to take more comfortable shots well again we gotta set solid screens it's hard to go against this team in a one-on-one situation when we get the ball two weak side we get pretty good looks thank you guys sounds like he's talking about patience a little bit Doris well you know this is an Indiana team that's going to shrink the floor and one of the things that had made the Raptors better to me this year and listen they're isolation players DeMar DeRozan right but they've been better at working both sides of the floor fake a pass to make a pass raptors have one of the lowest assist percentages in the league Lowry couldn't get a shot off in time and folks if you're wondering about the score it says 70-67 right now during the break the officially the officiating crew reviewed a shot by Paul George decided it was a three and not a two so subsequently he has a 17 point third quarter not 16. all Georgia starting this period getting a breather after that spectacular last 12 minutes Indiana Pacers seventh seed coming in historically seven seeds have only won five series [Music] Lawson Solomon Hill inside in traffic and he draws the hit and Solomon Hill gonna go to the free throw line you know we talk about the Pacers Doris this is a half court type of game and in close games Indiana has had its well chronicled struggles down the stretch in fact if you look at the close games and Craig Vogel talked to us about it earlier [Applause] they've lost 15 games this year by five points or less that ranks amongst League leaders unfortunately for Indiana you know frankly saying you know as a coach that's hard on making you know you're hyper critical and you feel like people are questioning your abilities down the stretch we'll say they're 37-7 when they lead after three and Toronto is record trailing after three is not great Terence Ross missing the runner Indiana leading by five 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter here in game one Raptors are just one in seven all time in game ones of opening Series [Music] [Applause] trying to flip the script here Jordan Hill inside biombo clears Rosen on the bench for Toronto and valenciunis now gets up get ready to check in Joseph up top for biyombo great pass that's going to be an offensive foul Lowry taking a hit foreign Lawson's game he gets the crossover and they're going to use say his right hand the push-off Lawson waived by the Houston Rockets on March 1st and then ultimately signed with the Pacers and giving them a nice spark off the bench in the 13 regular season games to finish out the year Joseph finds Ross at the quarter Patterson with the board yes they are absolutely crushing Indiana on the offensive glass mark [Music] well with a quick take and he draws the foul against valenshunis and that is going to be the fifth on Valencia who just checked into the game Doris 10-1 to goal do you leave him in the game or not at this point big decision for Dwayne Casey McSwain just shouted instructions at Valencia's but I think you make the move get piyombo back in foreign disappointed JV as he's called by his teammates although his game has been anything but junior varsity 19 boards and you've not been able to play for long stretches because of it Hill knocks down the free throw you're amusing yourself with that junior varsity I get Gideon playoff time doors work you know under 10 minutes to go Joseph turns the corner but well defended nine on the shot clock Ross with a great time and biyombo draws the foul from CJ Miles that's his first both coaches today wired for sound [Music] we gotta take up the airspace all right we're there but we're not there let's be disciplined all right here the win on the road in the playoffs you need two or three fast break boys in the fourth quarter okay we gotta get there at one point it was a 15-7 Advantage for Indiana in transition he's basically saying you want to execute against their set half court defense turn them over and let's turn it to transition cheer you just heard was a nervousness had a nervousness about it as the Raptors Trail by three with under 10 minutes to go biyombo missing that first free throw badly almost airballed leonbo just a 63 foul shooter on the season once again good defense Off the Bench goes over two well they've talked an awful lot about increased maturity on Toronto that's going to show up it's going to show up here in the final nine minutes Stuckey working against Joseph [Music] [Applause] Lawson lost it and the Raptor is going to stop [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Joseph off the screen probing pass and Stucky makes the steal they got a three on one and they're unable to convert and score but it'll still stay Indiana basketball [Music] 901 to go and uh Paul George and DeMar DeRozan still on the bench for their respective teams quite getting the punch from the bench in the second half Toronto that they got in the first half [Applause] [Music] a strong pull by biyombo [Music] Lowry Ross open for three got it [Applause] outside watching the game on the big screen [Music] Lawson with the mismatch on Patterson [Applause] Toronto with a chance to retake the lead here this would be the time for Lowry to turn it off [Music] just three of 11 today from the field for Kyle Lowry another Miss in close [Music] Hill it'll be Toronto ball it had been a quiet afternoon for Terence Ross one of those guys they identify as being more consistent but staying space to feed from Lowry gets him locked up at 74. [Music] ESPN's presentation of the NBA Playoffs brought to you by the Huntsman winners War discover the story before Snow White in theaters Friday and Toyota Let's Go Places [Music] coming up on ABC at 3 30 Eastern Time Steph Curry who made over 403 pointers this year an NBA record that is unbelievable and he made it at about a 46 clip and look at some of the rest of the games tonight Celtics Hawks Mavericks Thunder both on ESPN it's uh OKC Russell Westbrook Kevin Durant going to work against the Mavs very quietly the Hawks within one of the outstanding defensive teams down the stretch of this season I think two really well coach teams in that basketball game and mark the way this game is played what a way for the playoffs to start right because the game slows down becomes more grinding on the defensive end as we approach sort of seven and a half minutes can somebody seize control of this thing for maybe three or four minutes and get a little separation where's that run going to come from or who is going to be the Catalyst Lowry still struggling 7 for 30 combined between Lowry and DeRozan now during the break keep in mind Frank Vogel made the move first he put Paul George back into the ball game DeMar DeRozan still on the Raptors bench George had that great third quarter Hill drew the hit from Lowry and George Hill will go to the free throw line and he was close to being in three-point territory in fact he may have been they're going to go to the Monitor and take a closer look to see if this is going to be three or just two free throws that's going to be the third foul on Lowry this game has been extremely physical oh both ends I mean I think we anticipated with Indiana but but the physicality matched by by Toronto you know the Pacers keep in mind did come into the playoffs they're going to say that it's three free throws Pacers came into the playoffs six winners and six of the last seven as we take one more look at it was a a three good job by him feeling the contact from Lowry to throw it up there mark George Hill the local basketball star playing for the local NBA team from Rob Ripple High going to the free throw and how about this they've not made a basket here all of their points four of them in this fourth quarter make it five have come from the free-throw line for Indiana there was a little bit of posturing in the media by both Dwayne Casey and Frank Vogel about how each of the respective teams plays the game and how it's affected the officiating consoles have a tendency to even themselves out foreign line a 76 free-throw shooter on the season the Pacers have gone to the line 21 times and the Raptors 26 open fairly even there comes what were you saying about evening out Again by two you know the respective fan bases don't think either team has been there enough Ross gonna try and buy another one can't [Applause] and Tony Brothers says Toronto basketball yeah Josh tiven does a nice job he's the Baseline official he looked right at Tony Brothers kind of put his arms up saying I I didn't see it flowery inbounding [Applause] under seven minutes to go DeRozan's still on the bench for the Raptors Lowry the other half of that All-Star backward on the floor Ross driving for the rebound and draws the foul which if you're the Pacers is a good decision yeah Uncle not a great free throw shooter George Hill just such a smart defensive player you look at Georgetown you know things that he does to me doesn't show up at a box score he sat down in a defensive stance made it incredibly hard on Lowry all afternoon recognizing in that instance put this guy at the free throw line [Applause] yeah makes the first on-point game DeRozan comes back in with 6 46 to go and what do you make as Demari Carroll goes to the bench what do you make of his performance today of course well first of all I've been a little bit surprised I thought we'd see some signs of that knee bothering him and I'm sure physically in his mind just like Paul George is probably not where he wants to be it's how quickly can they get him acclimated he played 14 minutes scored six points a couple of rebounds tied at 76. George isolated against DeRozan he had 17 in that hot third quarter forced to pass to Stuckey and he drills the three ball Rodney Stuckey that said a couple of days ago for everyone to hear we think we match up well with the Raptors [Music] DeRozan drives it it's the tough layup the ball [Applause] 1000 with 14 now on five of 18 from the field the fourth quarter [Applause] Paul George drew the contact he swept through and got the hit from DeRozan who draws his fourth Savvy move by Paul George back after this to walk up three in transition he really started to get going at the start of the third with that three leans inside the defender on that one curls off a screen delivers another perimeter jump shot this one was just excellent Baldwin I thought you could have had two players prior to him take that shot and then he shoots a gap and then this last play because watch the left arm of derosion he feels it and he goes right up and it was visible for frustration from DeMar DeRozan we had a look at it several times to see whether he found him but he's got a chance to add to the 17 second half points and they're playing exclusively through him in the in the post and why not Mark we saw him deliver the ball to the corner for the three ball from Stuckey Paul George will make good decisions down the stretch making big plays and he can't overstate the laborious and arduous rehab he went through to get back of that horrific injury that he suffered back in August of 2014. [Applause] [Music] George for three launches got it wet Paul George makes it a four-point lead for the Pacers he's now four of five from three-point territory off the hands of the Pacer Defender CJ Miles you know there's a great moment Paul George last year in kind of a non-descript regular season game in Brooklyn after he'd come back he went to Riley Williams the team orthopedic surgeon of the Brooklyn Nets who did the surgery on his leg to literally piece it back together and he presented the team doctor with his USA basketball jersey it was a really heartfelt moment and a show of appreciation yeah Ross with the elbow jumper got him [Music] instead of Powell you're playing with Terence Ross hoping he can get started [Music] Alan schoonis getting ready to come back for the Raptors here's Paul George again biombo with good health defense didn't matter and you have to be willing to be this guy right now if you're Paul George right the elite Guys these are the moments where you get separation where you're willing to absorb the make or Miss opportunities when the game is on the line we spoke to Paul George about that pregame Mark he he's like I want this responsibility that searing hot Spotlight is on him right now and he's responding in a huge wave DeRozan trying to do the same that pass a little bit hot off the face of biombo Paul George's eight of nine from the field in the second half for 22 points [Music] it's going to be a foul against Terence Ross [Applause] that's the 15 foul that's going to send the Pacers jan-mahimi to the free throw line with 419 to go [Music] tahini just a 59 free-throw shooter it's one of the few guys on that Pacers roster with a championship ring from his days with the Spurs in mass and think about the minutes he had to play down the stretch of that series John he said it changed my career ballon Tunis back in the game now for Toronto remember he's got five personal fouls and he who goes over two [Music] [Applause] [Music] Lowry off the screen gets into the paint and draws the foul on mahimi he throws his arm Skyward and looks at Scott Foster and says I went straight up that's going to be his spiff so back comes the rookie Miles Turner to check into the game [Applause] in me with a singular point today to go along with three rebounds says but on the floor very much 17 minutes we heard from Kyle Lowry wearing a Mike force and Paul George doing the same here he is foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] against Patterson on the way [Applause] [Music] [Applause] George to Turner the rookie who finishes on the sweet pick and roll so back-to-back possession said play him on the post that time they put him in the pick and roll and again he makes another good decision a little drop pass for Turner three and a half minutes to go the Raptors down by five [Music] Lowry gets run over by George Hill let's watch Paul George so they they lift Paul George from the post they get him out to the perimeter he goes pick and roll drop pass that was not easy working in a crowd in the paint [Music] Al George very much looking forward to these playoffs as Lowry is now three of eight folks three of eight from the line and tonight after the NBA Playoffs don't miss Sports Center at night with Max and the coach they'll have highlights analysis but the playoff games as well highlights from baseball in the NHL sports Runner night tonight after the NBA playoffs on ESPN also streaming live on watch ESPN and the ESPN app well George telling us before the game that his family is Dad Paul and Mom Paulette already arriving in Indianapolis ready to provide a little support for this playoff run for him in the Pacers back in to deal this is why you acquire him right to guard these Elite Wings another good pass by George for an easy Deuce from Turner this is the largest lead of the ball game for the Indiana Pacer stores this is not what the Raptors envisioned unfolding here today Paul George is just putting it to him right now you take him away he was scoring early he's now become a distributor Lowry turns it over Ellis on the push dropped it off for George [Applause] a little Showdown here against damari decaro their Elite Defender [Applause] and George put him on Ice deep freeze an eight-point Pacer lead the Pacers picking away at that scab of the Raptors that is still very fresh back after this Paul George there is no answer right now for Toronto where he is concerned off the screen from Turner was an outstanding screen how about create your own a little separation from DeBarge DeRose and again another screen and what do you think about being a league player here's what he thinks every day you gotta prepare to be the number one option you got to prepare offensively and defensively to be reliable it comes with a lot of pressure from coaches teammates this is my opportunity to show who I am as an individual with my my chance of being a leader and uh you know leading the team myself so um I'm looking forward to you know this being my opportunity he certainly is opportunity with open arms nine second half and Paul George has done everything he's been asked to do today I think with that comes in burden and the responsibility he actually used those two terms when you're the elite guy when you're hunting all night in and night out and I I wonder did he have sort of the James Harden mentality wanting to take every single shot but look at the assist total on the back end okay so then they start making him a passer he's making all the right decisions Mark been a bump a year for Paul George he was unhappy with that small ball lineup they played earlier in the season so they went more conventional was not thrilled about having to play the four and that's going to be an offensive foul against the Raptors and Kyle Lowry on the illegal screens so facing an eight-point deficit less than two and a half minutes to go the Raptors who are one and seven in game one playoff games in a bigger hole well that's clearly a foul I mean he's Pro I'm not sure why he's being that physical with George Hill at that moment Monte Ellis gets downhill George Hill for three [Applause] [Music] loose ball foul and that's going to go against the Raptors Jonas valanciunis and that's going to be a disqualification now for him his afternoon has finished [Applause] [Music] their best big man today is done for the afternoon I'll shoot us with an impressive 12 points and a career high 19 rebounds then here in a bind here right you think well you come back with this Mac Bianco you can't you're down Mark so you've got to come back with Patrick Patterson who over the point from January 1 forward has been a terrific three-point shooter he got out of the gate super slow but but you lose the monster rebounding of Valen Tunis which you can't come back with biombo at this point you need some production offensively Solomon Hills Doris knocks down the first free throw you can't help but think that some people here and some of those players on the bench have hit the here we go again button at this point two years ago against Brooklyn they dropped game one last year they dropped game one of the playoffs here against the Washington Wizards Mark it's why we came on the air talking about this is a point where you've got to exercise your demon and understand how to perform on this stage and the doubts you wonder are they creeping in down by 10. they need their two All-Stars to get busy here DeRozan tries to do just that Patterson missed the follow [Music] Ing and a whistle you look like they're gonna call offensive basket interferences Patterson pulled down the rim on the attempt [Applause] 204 to go the Pacers leading by 10. but the big question all year has been can the Pacers close it out they struggle doing that this season back after this introspective concerned look across the face of Kyle Lowry the frustration visible for the Raptors 1 through 12. which includes the uh the coaching staff as well and here's why you see those concerned looks their history not that good when it comes to what they've done in the first round two years ago against the Nets talked about it a moment ago they dropped game one and then against the Wizards last year the same there was a common denominator in the Nets in Washington and that was Paul Pierce professional villain under two minutes to go Pacers with the ball in control [Music] Paul George has been the story of the second half for the Pacers and Monte Ellis giving his buddy a little bit of help there with the three what 21. they have a 21 Point Advantage from three-point territory [Applause] [Music] whistling foul gonna go against the Raptors well Frank Vogel when he broke the Huddle after he got his team together yesterday after practice told his team you know what guys we're gonna have to win at least one game on the road in Toronto we may as well start in game one hey hey an Air Canada Center is definitely silent right now as we take a look at the series schedule oh my gosh game two Monday here in Toronto then the series shifts back to Indianapolis for game three on Thursday and now you push up into pressure trying to turn over [Applause] Indiana [Applause] [Music] 30 points good job by Monte Ellis to take control of that possession trying to get Paul George's attention [Music] isolation for George against DeRozan four on the shot clock well defended they get the stop Turner there for the put back no good and Solomon Hill with a loose ball [Music] the second half has belonged to Indiana especially in this fourth quarter this guy's the reason why George with the floater missing and committing the foul against Corey Joseph that's going to be his third that's belonged to Indiana spelunk to Paul George I think you got to give some big time credit to George Hill and the defense he has played [Music] Joseph at the free-throw line and Doris what does this do to the psyche of the Raptors if they drop game one here moving forward well one of the things that's interesting to me Mark is when you talk to to people close to this group there is and has been all year a connectedness something that I thought didn't happen at the end of last year I thought there was a lot of pointing fingers pointing at Dwayne Casey talking about whose fault it was that they got swept out of the playoffs that that Coalition will be tested as you drop game one unless they can in a minute and five seconds well in the locker room last year after their swept by the Wizards it was DeRozan and Lowry that vowed that this would never happen again they'd talk to their teammates in the locker room but now the Raptors barring a miraculous comeback are going to lose their seventh consecutive playoff game dating back a couple of playoff Seasons George from the Baseline got it an appropriate punctuation mark exclamation point by Paul George as Joseph gets fouled as people begin to exit Air Canada Center with 43 seconds to go doesn't he wear he wear this experience well right think about those multiple tennis in the Eastern Conference Finals the playoff experience never gives his possession up understanding I can get my shot I've got several inches on Kyle Lowry I'm gonna I'm gonna take this one [Applause] look at the respective numbers from the Star players the three All-Stars today Joseph makes the second it's a nine point lead with 43 seconds to go [Applause] Indiana has had trouble closing out games this year but this afternoon they're on the right track put this one on Ice that's going to be the fifth personal foul against Kyle Lowry [Music] it's going to be his fifth Hill going to the free throw line well I think it was Pat Riley that first said that playoff series doesn't begin until the home team loses the game I guess it started quick welcome to the playoffs slow scoring physical defensive minded possession ball game down the stretch who had a great start for the Raptors [Music] [Applause] ago just uh two and a half seasons ago the Pacers were an Eastern Conference Powerhouse battling it out with the likes of the Miami Heat in the east has changed since that time they've turned the roster over but that one common denominator remains their star player Paul George about to notch a playoff Victory here in game one against the Raptors [Music] 32 points on a very efficient 12 of 22 from the field and that breaks the trend of what happened during the regular season against Toronto when he averaged just 16 points a game how about his 10 for 13 in the second half and how many assists in the second half did he have Doris when he walked into the interview room I'm gonna say okay and we looked at his kicks he liked those kids the shoes that he was wearing they're from some some designer I've never seen or heard of before and I consider myself a a little bit of a shoes guy a kicks horse you know you know it was going to be a special night when he came in with those multi-hued shoes of this he kicked Toronto to the curb today I knew you you liked him when you took a picture of him you can find it on my Twitter well the NBA Playoffs have started folks the visiting Pacers coming into Toronto and defeating the Raptors here this afternoon in game one so the fun has begun the Pacers who missed the playoffs last season back in a big way and they take game one 100 to 90 behind Paul George they're all NBA player who had 33 points in the game the majority coming in the second half 27 in the second half five assists he had six assists on the night five in the second half he just picked this team apart Mark take a look at our updated brackets one game in the books coming up at 3 30 on ABC you'll see Golden State taking on Houston meanwhile in the East it looks like this Cleveland Detroit tomorrow on ABC at three o'clock Atlanta Boston Miami Charlotte tomorrow let's go to Israel Courtside call for four regular season games and one half against these Raptors you were shooting 30 percent and in this second half you just kind of went off what did you do to get yourself loose uh after the first half I'll watch film in the back uh coming out it's getting Great Looks um I just wasn't being smart about my Approach and I did a better job with that I seen that I had some easy opportunities some easy shots that was missing in the pink I got locked in I got focused I made shots the team defense against that starting back court of Toronto was pretty Spectacular from start to finish what'd you guys do against them and how does that give you confidence going forward in the series they missed shots these two guys are good they missed shots we got to continue to make it tough on them that's all we got to do they're going to make tough shots we did a great job of not letting this crowd get involved late and um I think that's what helped push us push us through this Paul you've been on this stage before but you obviously missed almost all of last year this year you're fighting for a playoff spot throughout the season how much do you relish being back here not just to say hey I'm back on the playoff stage but to show people hey I can still lead a team I love it I love it I'm looking at it there's no pressure um I've been here before being the low seed my rookie year uh so this is almost new to me all I gotta do is come out and play uh try to do as best as I can leading and um you know my guys are behind me so they got all the faith all the trust in me coach got the trust in me just gotta come out and perform I played by play guy Mark Jones is obsessed with the shoes you wore to the game today there's some sort of boat sort of shoes with like gold spikes on them tell me about those there's some moves that's some moves I wore them all-star weekend as well so ain't nothing new uh I thought he was gonna comment about my game shoes no those are good thanks Paul calm down what up baby guys Palmdale California representing in the form of Paul George and gotta go look for some of those shoes those Lubes online somewhere Doris Burke but Paul George whatever Footwear he was wearing today it was the right one because he ended up with 33 points four rebounds six assists and the Raptors forced to go back to the drawing board and come back Monday for game two hundred to ninety the final here the Pacers take it the next NBA playoff game Houston Golden State 3 30 on ABC coming up next on ESPN the Alabama spring game for Doris Burke I'm Mark Jones so long from Toronto Canada
