can a fuel run trip drive to Talladega bunch in 16 seconds top off the truck phone home and I don't even call the stop Chris Wallace is in four tires of gas crew goes over the wall things look good left sides down their way in fifteen point nine seconds off the tower down the flag stand go wrap it with Benny two laps around the track on foot [Music] International and all year long pit crews have challenged each other to get their drivers in now the pits quickly it's going to be especially important here today at Bristol it's difficult to pass on the tight track so pit crews will be called upon to help their driver gain track position through the pit stops weather is threatening here is the starting lineup for today's Food City 500 at Bristol with Chuck Bown on the pole for the first time in his career and Rusty Wallace alongside will go through the grid for you very quickly because we should be going green here in just a couple more laps that's two more less Mark Martin Joe Nemechek about that great qualifying run for Nemechek Ernie and Todd Bodine look at Todd of the top ten Bobby Labonte Morgan Shepherd Ricky Rudd and Terry Labonte 500 miles of cars Bob faster lamps 500 laps faster than ever going to be awfully hard physically on the drivers today 31 drivers broke the previous track record there are 37 starters here today the fastest of all was bound at 124 point nine four six on a half mile race track and Chuck Bown that's right his pit crew gonna be off important they can heap it as well as the two-car the 28 car they've proven all year long they are as good as Ria's on pit road can the 12 car they up to the task they say they are there are the guys that took the Provisionals to get into the race Jeff Burton and Dale Jarrett and Darrell Waltrip took a former champions provisional to get into the lineup remember though Darrell Waltrip started last in this race last year thirty fifth last year and went on to a sixth place finish and there are the five drivers who attempted to qualify but had to go home to watch this race on television and the cars come out of quarter number four the pace car pulls down off the 36 degrees of banking the crowd is on its feet and the Food City 500 is underway [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and a racetrack that's the I are cooking [Music] here they learn hard tries to make a pass here Oh Mike Wallace you saw her in our qualified back in about the 23rd spot and once these guards get on the outside right now the groove on the bottom of the racetrack we saw Wallace get on the outside two cars got by before you get back to the booth the car that went around Wallace wants on Hoosier tires here the all Hoosier tires for the previous races in 1994 has switched a good year Rusty Wallace is the leader of the race as we take a look at the close action back about 17th 18th and 19th there's war third front benefit one he was the fastest second round fall about it his [Music] there we see the 16 car Jeff Gordon got on the inside of him took the spot away with what's much great bit on the outside lost two more spots before he can get back in line let's practice Wallace found Martin Jeff Gordon urban bobby labonte and then Musgrave [Music] to lead a NASCAR Winston Cup race for the first time since 1976 when he led at Riverside but Rusty Wallace got off to a pharaoh they're troubled on the backstretch hey Dan has been his fun down on the inside retaining wall there a couple of cars got in trouble in front of him and I guess everybody else slowed down here for him from the rear spot down to the inside he hit the wall very hard inside retaining wall on the backstretch and you can see there is heavy front-end damage to the 33 skull bandit and Harry Gant who is driving in his last spring race here at Bristol has been involved in an incident let's see if we can determine what happened we'll see he punishment he checked up and the 31 car or city but something happened in front of them Derrick coat got got tagged by was it the what Derek hope was very very slow coming off the second corner well he got he got bumped a little bit I believe by Brett Bodine was anyways he wants corner and everybody checked up and that's that Wartburg just bumped down to her again and there we see the waitress take part [Music] got him off the problem so our first caution of the day over Bristol International Raceway 13 laps have been completed Rusty Wallace has led all of them so far taking the lead from outside the front row starting position evidently Harry Kent is okay he's sitting in the car the window net is down and I think that's the is that not the signal Ned that the drivers are for okay take the wininet down that yes fellas NASCAR their game yes that's what they have been told [Music] from the bumper cam we can see what happened that's dairy copse bumper cam okay so it was sterling varlyn then that came up and maybe bumped him a little bit and got him out of shape and then you can see back there's Harry gets bumped from behind there's everybody sort of put on their brakes and slow down they can see the baby there's one piece of trouble there here we see warbird going to just touch hair again in the back and michael waltrip ran the back of Warburton it's lucky that didn't have more than one car spinning back there and now an in-car real-time coming up during coke touched the wall back there coming up the second corner and John Kernan has a report on pit road Bob we've made our way to the backstretch pits and they're putting hearing cants car on the tow truck to pull it behind the wall the problem is that had the impact on the front end they have broken the radiators and they're going to spin quite a few laps behind the wall to fix that that's all the damage we know of at this point course maybe some problems with the steering but right now just a broken radiator and until I have to come behind the wall and fix so Harry Gant may not be out of this the car slipped down the banking here it is from another angle just a little bit of a nudge it didn't take a great deal he spins down to the inside and then it's going to come back up across the track was bobby labonte wouldn't imagine last car that almost got into it and then Musgrave but it's only a one car incident involving Chuck Bown who has made his way to his pit area now and actually is going to go behind the wall well I thought he was but I guess not Jerry punch is right there doc unfortunately Bob heavy damage for Chuck Bown and Bobby Allison sport Thunderbird the left front the right front the left rear the tires are basically down and off the wheels and Chuck did a great job is to get the car to turn off the racetrack now they have to pick the left side of the car up the clearance is so minimal the ground get the jack on the carpet ours are both flat the jack beneath the car left sidebar that rear car bigger area trying to put some of the thinner away cuffs right for a young man who Tyrone opposed to the first [Music] about to roll away but here it is from mark markings in common [Music] and you can see Jeff Gordon go Marton to pick up the second position so Bowne Roger there is a very dejected and sure Dale Jarrett who was climbed from his Interstate Batteries Chevrolet and his to the truck starting position and was running about twenty four 23rd or 24th and was ready to coming up through the feel pretty good but got a little bit of a tap there and sent him into the wall Saturday once again we will look at the battle off of on and off of pit road here comes Jeff Gordon Rusty Wallace the 22 car of Labonte got out in a hurry so did Ernie Irvan and Mark Martin the jet boat on only changing the right sides over on the back pit was a he's up to third spot and here is John Colonel of Dale Jarrett well Dale Jarrett is coming through the infield Dale apparently you're okay you walking around what exactly happened or car and I guess he didn't appreciate you being there Carr pretty well damaged the done for the day match the back in all the way up we finally got the guard working halfway decent if I'm wrecked on the front stretch and I got on the outside of him I guess the inside of rank man Stan that's Dale jr. of course very very unhappy as they were moving through the field pretty well it hasn't been a good first few races for Dale two tires these other cars changed for with the Burton brothers and Greg sacks Earnie urban closing in though on Jeff bodean [Music] there's a third place car Bobby Labonte and four very very impressive here in the first 70 here 81 laps of this spasso jeopardized our Exide batteries [Music] one mile from this Speedway there's Bobby Labonte and here is Ernie shooting to the inside of Jeff off the fourth point and bobby labonte in hot pursuit of Jeff Conine patty just about his wallet turns one and two and here comes the budget cars hello in for further than the four car gets into it and how pit is still slow bunch of cars jammed up behind him and and Ward Burton comes up once the damage Kyle's trying to get down the inside of the track so he hitting the pits and you do it and there Burton has a lot of damage run into that car chain reaction type of situation that's what happens here that goes so fast and if something happens in five just like we thought [Music] and Jerry punch is right there right [Music] Jerry Warburton pulls away a lot of sledgehammers not trying to beat down the hood the hood was pushed it looked like the radiator has been pushed back but there was no food you see if there's a problem so to see how exactly the car is there was the top vote on the 75f and also contact which we Wallace depends on the man the Borden Shepherd star Sirius pork the 26 car garnet what's going on there well the reason rather they contact up there when everyone got all she ends up in not the would be Andrew so they had to pull ahead the old bungee cord comes in handy once in a while done it sure does we've got two more opposite we go to Talladega here's the intro leaderboard Gordon as lead on Rusty Wallace about a two-second lead on Ernie Irvan three seconds behind in fourth and Labonte is almost four seconds behind insist Jeff Gordon yesterday very very impressive looking he was very fast he's proving today that the car is still fast panting brakes in 77 would explain it I don't have words for it he is most impressive Rusty Wallace was on the very left of the screen the 28th is there's a 28 now on the Prairie right of the screen goes by Steve Grissom as Jeff board run across that heavy traffic he's [Music] this particular time and as long as the ring to be in trend because their cars just about everywhere over the racetrack it's front neck beat Jeff [Music] Steve Bristol running side-by-side now this looks like rusty is well started say he might have been you also have to be smart sometimes certainly patience patience I guess that's a better word yes than conservative you are still in this time it's late [Music] well they're showing six now Bobby was five little bear already more than have been completed in this race how far they've got to go get to the lead [Music] within a car length earlier with his third Jeff Conine fourth and Mark Martin Smith after 102 of 500 laps and Bristol [Music] Burnie urban is in trouble car just slowed dramatically coming off of order number two he coasted down the backstretch here he is on the front stretch headed for the pits it does not look good for the Texaco Hamilton doesn't look like it has power but let's see if we can see what happened he was running along they're in third place were gaining on the leaders goes into turn one here and all of a sudden he slows down cars pass them on the outside the hood is up down on pit road which thought maybe an ignition problem they're working on it frantically so I think it is an ignition problem ernie irvan's worst finish this year than a six at Darla of course these the NASCAR Winston Cup point leader while we were in break Rusty Wallace did get the lead back from Jeff Gordon and we'll show you how it occurred there coming off the turn to rest he got a good run Jeff Smith a little bit coming off the turn too rusty got a good run there Jeff booth didn't bite him let him go on and take the beat [Music] fight that credit for a while because they got a the leader that wind their way through that Jeff Gordon was trying to get by Jeff Burton in the blue-and-white 8 car Rusty Wallace right now he's trying to get by Jeff Burton in the a cartel right here's Jerry punch and Ernie Irvan fits well the preliminary indication and Ernie Irvan successfully could certainly have a major impact on the point this is how they stood going into this event with Earnhardt and Martin tied for a second position then Schrader and Rudd the second five in points going into this event speed Shepherd Marlin Jeff Gordon nine and Terry Labonte in ten well the Family Channel blimp is currently in the area part of their 1994 accentuate the positive tour cross-country journey incorporating flybys at major fairs festivals sporting events such as this one here at Bristol and they're providing some excellent overhead shots in the Family Channel bloom Jeff Conine has just taken over the second place from Jeff Gordon now Marc Marc takes over that out we'll be head of defense and Bob you mentioned that Jeff bodean his own Hoosier tired remember he only took on two tires during that pit stop so that's a pretty impressive situation this is the longest green flag run we've had so that might be telling us something falling back Giri what's the problem apparently Gordon's brought in the moment to the car just suddenly got loose I'm in a hurry homey here in the the car suddenly take care of it will he come in and get others the Jerry we're back in jeopardized Jeff just taking the lead and then he's pointed out bright side tires only on that last pit stop what they have seen very little tire winds and they but it looks like they have made [Music] Bobby Hamilton this is yep hitting the wall coming out of turn actually down the back [Music] and he moved out of the way very smartly babka [Music] found the crack he drove it up there together near our 3 battling for position it's Bobby Labonte Ted Musgrave and Todd Bodine that is a tan and Musgrave tries another 22 car and now the knock between one and two that will bring out the caution play fourth caution of the day flies over the racetrack as derrike cope and turned over to going to be saved again he was the next car to be left by the leaders and ricky rudd might've got his lap back he had just been lapped he might've passed Jeff though died that'll be up to NASCAR to decide that the Fingerhut car owned by Cale Yarborough that has stopped at the top of the banking the both front tires are planted it just will be gone we see that dairy cope is tried to make the car roll it will not go forward reverse here for a second I don't know better not packing front all these cars they're still going free all right the pits are open and here they come in for service now let's go to Winston Cup racing at Chris in Tennessee Mark Martin is the new leader the race in a spin and turn for Dick Trickle dick trickles car at the bottom of the racetrack in turn number four let's show you how Mark Martin got the lead from Jeff Gordon he just came off the fourth corner the accelerate got underneath Jeff Gordon he had no choice because it move up the racetrack and Rusty Wallace fought if I could take over that second spot Jeff fell into third and Terry Labonte in fourth position and now we do have another caution flag the racetrack our step of the afternoon and here come the pit stops once again Wallace gorg body speed Earnhardt's musgraves todd bodine and bobby labonte all [Music] dear Jerri yes Gordon all put together they'll have less cars oil here in the body through [Music] 16.9 for rusty he is away then comes Gordon didn't have far to go to cross the line and Jeff bodean beat them all [Music] back from the bathroom what you did back there well a little bit interesting strategy to cut left side tires and fuel which means the next pit stop for them they'll just go right side talking with Paul Andrews after that last pit stop when they took four and lost eight positions from first all the way back tonight he said man it's killing us pitting here on the backstretch we got to come up with a plan and apparently this is their plan and it seemed to have worked pretty well because Jeff is now back at the front well an interesting strategy here here are the frontstretch pitch you can see how everybody completes their work here comes Wallace and Gordon but I think are a narc beat Jeff off the room off the pit road and then Earnhardt is in front of Jeff Borden alteration but the leader of the race is Geoff Bodine for 7x I'd batteries machine we'll take with the wall down in turn number four damaged the car pretty heavily it's on the hook or the garage area or the so-called garage area here although there actually isn't a garage area they take it back to their trucks a lot of rear-end damage Jeff bodean will find himself in the lead before of the yellow and before the pit stop he was running ninth and don't forget he's pitted on the backstretch and change two times we'll see what kind of strategy that is because it could be very smart it could be very smart yeah it's going to be smart if he didn't go all the way back to about 10 or 12 yeah and if we continue to have cautions frequently how about Darrell Waltrip he is running in 15th position at the moment remember he had to take a Champions provisional to get into the race started last 37 he has saved being lapped at least twice this afternoon last year he started 35th last drove to a sixth place finish and he appears to be doing so again he is the all-time one leader here at Bristol with 12 victories that includes five here in the Food City and seven in the fall race the night race interesting thing about Darrell Waltrip he is running good years today yes he is he decided yesterday to qualify was a good year so he'd be able to run he said look I've got to find out something about my team I can't go back to shop on Monday and keep blaming it on the tires I got to compare apples to apples he put the good years on just like Rusty Wallace and see where he's lacking and Jerry punch has more on this story you know they tested the who through tires and all the short tracks and I think Hoosier is going to make a major change in the sidewall of that tire between now and the tire they're going to bring to North Wilkesboro next weekend a number of the drivers said we may not be that good at Bristol but the tire we're bringing to Wilkesboro is going to be a different tire primarily because of darrell waltrip testing efforts there the darryl flicks the Goodyear today but expect to see him back on Hoosiers next week we're under caution at Bristol International Raceway 175 laps complete back in a moment [Music] rain we were cautioned for [Music] scene of the crash riki remains in the cockpit and the safety personnel are there she said the tide threw down there and the NASCAR officials have told them look guys you know let the professionals do it [Music] it road is closed at the moment he is not far from the exit of pit road here on the front stretch car slid clear across the there you can see the impact the car slid clear across the track up the it slid down the banking but the contact came on the front stretch there it has already occurred car slides up to 36 degrees of banking Jerry I just spoke to billing well as you watch ricky rudd climb and flew the assistance here the Bristol life-saving crew he led in the ambulance they have three positions on duty here at the facility Larry carrier wanted to make sure they got every major specialty covered as far as promised dessert Linda Rudd walking back Ricky apparently applauded impact has a breath knocked out of him he was able to breathe and was alert inside the race car talked to billing a minute ago and his wife Linda he'll be taken to the infield care center and checked out hopefully we can get a comment from Ricky Paul Monteiro Lee breathe a sigh of relief after that major impact hit it hard there's no doubt about you can see how the front end of this board is bashed in riki of course a car owner this year in addition to the driver [Music] yes a suitable amount [Music] well the track crew is going to be out there for a while because there was a lot of fluid that leaked from the race car there is the point of impact just past the start/finish line you can see the tracks they begin just out of turn number four [Music] and they head-on impact with the inside wall down by turn number one but apparently Ricky is not seriously injured he is being taken to the infield Medical Center and dr. Darlington which was pretty good we're gonna have it next weekend so they're getting some momentum for wilkes-barre now at the beginning of the year these guys swapped equipment with Rusty Wallace they switched some muscle with what three but three cars and ten motors got three Pontiacs and ten motors and they got forwards well John Curtin is standing by with a guy they exchanged cars with rusty I tell you what you guys worked hard today and came with a seven place finish move up to the tenth place in points yeah that's okay I mean I wanted to win the race in a car was really fast to begin in the race but had a couple car tires go down I run over a wheel weight or something up there and tore the right front tire up and then the second time I ran over a piece of Breed again I started running that hi Lena every time I run the high lane I tear at our up and I wouldn't hurt the tire I just put a hole in it so had three flat tires today but I'll tell you what when you have three flat tires and still finish them if you're doing something that's exactly right remember last year this is when rusty uh began making that charge he won those races in a row and he goes back to a good track view next weekend North Wilkesboro Bob and although tenth is great it's his worst finish on a short track since August of 1992 now Kenny Schrader finished second in this race however he shaken up as a result of what happened here this afternoon and you can expect that as we come into this short track season but boy things are really different than they were five or six hours ago Dale Earnhardt moves up to positions after being tied for second with Mark Martin is the leader Ernie Irvan falls a position so does Mark Martin ken Schrader stays the same in Lake speed moves up to fifth yes and these positions are very important as we see Sterling Marlin Morgan Shepherd Ricky Rudd Gordon and Wallace because they all the Provisionals after we take our based on the point standings I mean if Morgan Shepherd needs a provisional he would have preference over Jeff Gordon because he's seventh in the points rather than nine so you need to get as high as you possibly can look they're only 48 points separating 6th and 10th position and 11 through 15th in the point standings Kyle Petty Terry Labonte must Greg sacks and Darrell Waltrip comes up to 15th in the points and there's 44 points difference in those five drivers Michael Waltrip has moved in the 16 spot there's Jeff Burton and birds doing pretty well of course he did lose three spots today I think he was 14th going into it this race and Bill Elliott 19th and Brett Bodine and rounding out the top 20 Rick mast Dale Jarrett Jeff bodean Chuck Bown and 25th Jimmy Spencer so we will take one more break and come back to team Steve but you were able to battle back and get a 12 finish your best career finish today didn't Winston Cup racing congratulations thanks appreciate I tell you I can't say enough these guys they didn't quit in the team meeting this morning we talked about that it's gonna be a long race whatever happens just don't give up keep digging and write first the race there we had carburetor trouble and coming in twice under green wants to change the carburetor and wants to get there cleaner stuff back on it so I got a stamp lot a bit there at first but still nobody give up on this team and I just kept working hard and you know it paid off for us here Dean talk about a frightening experience I'm told the stud broke in the carburetor and hung the throttle wide open here Bristol that had to be Friday yeah it was fortunately was here at Bristol night at Martinsville or something we were able to just get on the brakes get the car shut off and anyway you know what no big deal is just something that happens you know we thought our day was over with as far as a decent finish but like I say these guys kept working super hard Gordon and all the guys on the team kept adjusting the car and the car handled good and run good and like I say we come up with a good finish as a rookie now with the rookie team do you feel like maybe the team coming to the short tracks is gonna be able to flick this muscle a little bit to show what you've got well I'll tell you this is tough no question Winston Cup racing is in I mean at the qualifying deal when you get to the race track it's two races first you got to qualifying race and it's tough we qualified 30 unfortunately got in the race but still you know that sounds like you're not running that good but when there's only about thirty four hundredths of a second from the pole to going home you don't have to be off much so again we just go the race track try to get in the show and then try to race as well as we can gain as much experience as we can and then from there you know this is a building year for us first year for the team first year for me and one stack up and you know we're learning hopefully be ready to to make a run for it next year you received a special special notification basically nomination just a few months ago as nominate for athlete of the year in the state of Alabama having made the 1993 Busch Series champion has to be very special for you yeah sure does so you look at the list of the guys that got nominated on that and just to have your name on the same list is a pretty big honor but I tell you there's a lot of race fans in Alabama you know you can't say enough for what Alison's red farmer Neil Bonnett and all those people have done for racing in Alabama and you know that state really looks forward to NASCAR coming to Talladega and they support it and it's neat to be a race car driver and have this kind of nomination some great race drivers in Alabama and some pretty good football players my state as well but I'm standing beside one of the best athletes to come out of that state Bob all right Thank You Jerry congratulations to Steve and as you can see the wind is Martin after smack in the wall hard come off turn two Jeff Gordon followed Mark Martin in the wall Chuck Bown our pole sitter Terry Labonte and Ward Burton 25th 26 330th todd bodine derrike cope all of those drivers having problems mike wallace out with an engine problem rick mast wrecked Bill Elliott in a hard crash as well finishing 31st with Jeff Burton who was involved in the crash with Bill Elliott Ricky Rudd 32nd then Ernie Irvan Dick Trickle and Jimmy Spencer and finishing in 36th and thirty seven positions couple of veterans Dale Jarrett and Harry Gant so that's the way they finished
