NASCAR Busts: Hendrick Motorsports Development (2004-2005)

in the nascar xfinity series you marvel at the excellence that is junior motorsport say what you will about his cup series career dale earnhardt jr without a doubt has an eye for talent currently hendrick motorsports has not just one but two former xfinity series champions from that team in both chase elliott and william byron it's safe to say rick hendrick has left the future developments of drivers to dallenhardt jr but back in the early 2000s it was a much different story and it started out pretty well at first they hit it big with a future nascar hall of famer and kyle bush who was able to compete for a nascar bush series championship right away but at the same time both rick hendrick and jeff gordon were really feeling themselves like hey we can turn anybody into a cub series superstar right well think again they missed out big time on not just one not just two but three future prospects in blake feasts kyle kristolov and boston reed at first these three showed a bit of promise both crystalloth and blake feast won in the arca remax series that season while boston reed was running consistently as well towards the end of the 2004 season rick hendrick decided he would give a couple of these guys a shot in the nascar bush series blake feast and boston reed made multiple starts towards the end of the 2004 season and as you can guess by the title of the video it went about as well as you think draw the spin right in front of the car in the fence you back into the wall you see the flames erupt and that's from the fuel cell the gas getting spilled right there 10 laps in full load of fuel on that 87 car blake fees 22 years old what happened to that new fire extinguisher we had in the back of those cars climbing out of that 87 car i'm doing his hands a lot of things you have to unhook in a quick or you get it done quicker when there's fire and a caution on the track boston reed has found some trouble he has found the outside retaining wall it's interesting it's in turn two in the same spot that uh kane had some problems another one of the hendrick development drivers 21 year old from logansport indiana in his second nascar bush series race and this one isn't going to work out also ran the richmond race no you don't have any brakes because you've knocked a rotor off the right front when you make contact with the outside retaining wall trouble in turn two three cars around four now involved i've involved mike wallace got caught up in that the four car the double zero blake fees is involved johnny sauter yeah wow a lot of good race cars blake seven start saw zero top tens and four dnfs with an average finish of 32nd while boston's three start saw an even worse average finish of 35th with two dnfs even after these horrible performances early on jeff gordon was still hyping these prospects up and to make matters even weirder they decided to let adrian fernandez a former indycar driver with no stock car experience make some select runs in 2005 with them as well all four were going to make select starts in the nascar bush series and mostly the same ride i think after the season opening arca incident this should have been an indication to rick hendrick and jeff gordon that hey this is not going to work at all oh big problems on pit road as one car has slid right through the barriers that's the 94 car of fees right into an opening on pit lane a very very scary moment on pit road how do you miss that badly look i'm not trying to be one of these couch drivers but oh my goodness the hendrick motorsports development program has not had a season this bad before or since [Applause] on the bottom he was racing 10 feet away in the 12 and it might have been contact with fidoa um i got to believe by the way that right front fender's kind of all jacked up there that he got into somebody boy if he if he did have contact uh maybe he did that when he came off that little bit of banking back there larry and clipped it he's lost it oh boy he was on a pretty good lap he was on he was on a run almost looks like the crowd can't believe this because they knew their man had a good shot at sitting on the bush coal here now remember he's locked into the field but it looks like he may have to go to a backup car see the crowd looking at the big screen and reacting in disbelief no harm no foul here he gets into the wall and when he bounces off nothing he could do about it uh he just bounced off and got into lewis and blake thief and the five car was just a victim wrong place wrong time hold his car around down here five off turn four hard crash for boston reed and the number five of hendrick motorsports killed the radiator there yeah the lowest car is freaking kill more than that pretty hurt don't do anything stupid there man looks like somebody helps the five car around who is that that is clinton clint there in the uh two car fourth caution of the night lap 44. second caution of the night coming out kyle kristela having problems with his transmission and so he was not able to continue on as they push him into the garage area he's one of the hendrick development drivers he ran some arc races one in arca race last year at chicagoland speedway hendrick motorsports very very high on kyle crystal off oh he got spin over in turn boston reed has looped it and cautioned yeah i got a little damage to the right side he is right there just got loose just lost it just lost control and went up it just grazed the wall with the right front right along here might make you dizzy on board with the lowest on-board camera [Music] jerry robertson the 78 and the caution flag is out i can't tell from that angle they were two cars very close i think uh blake kind of got left reared here looks like robertson lost it well he got left for everybody lost it saved it well blake had a lot to do with the saving it eight tires are better than four but unfortunately blake had the short end of the stick on that one and if someone's holding you up you just simply got to try to move them out of the way or whatever it takes to get by there's boston read the 57 lowscar and motorsports entry second caution of this race is out just past the halfway point here we see boy the leader of the in the two and there we see brent sherman in the 10 gets into boston reed they've checked up because of paul wolf and the 40 having spun and backed in the wall they get that right front fender on the two car a little bit well a 19 year old has been getting his lessons today bill he has been on the radio pretty constantly talking about the handling of his car getting encouragement from the crew chief getting lessons from the crew chief when the crew team saw our tv pictures of the right side of the car that being jim long he said do you need to bite a red wedge in that uh oh yeah oh yeah baby put a few in there this is michael waltrip last lap was a 73. that's the right side of damage but that's not the hood damage yeah i'm trying to figure out when the hood damage started that was earlier in the day was that maybe when the poor car got in the grass earlier on that restart even though it's an impound race you've got to have the type of setup underneath your car that when this track starts cooling off oh hang on there fernandez got loose getting down to turn one and back it into the wall and it just went loose i mean my speed was normal everything was normal wow adrian fernandez we saw him earlier during qualifying crash well guess what boy we have another one that team has i'm okay sorry gone through a lot of race cars this year he's the different drivers he's lost two cars here in about six hours [Music] the ride begins and that inside wall we talked about earlier not hitting one regan smith when he avoided hitting the inside wall that was a big deal and say what that's a heavy blow the entire front end almost knocked off that five car [Music] so adrian hedge for the ambulance and the infield care center man he has really struggled trying to find the way in these heavier nascar series he was underneath the car through three tops that race team has gone through some race cars this year she just got close to that guy on the bottom and lost the air on the spoiler and got sideways and wrecked and where did you say we'd see the most trouble today benny well i thought turn two but unfortunately that was turn three already but the wind is blowing now that's going to be a problem getting in that point that was t.j bell in that 36 crawl on the outside and i don't think they can repair that five car well enough to uh see if an end is getting out of the car that's good news and he has worked hard at it but it has been a battle for adrian so far this year and the high line and we've got trouble oh action lewis jr shelly had sadler that avoided him adrian fernandez and the five car down on the bottom he's just going to the corner and that's what they talked about just a moment ago exactly they were too close going into the corner the car on the bottom i'm sure got loose and exactly what happened why don't they listen they have a different channel on their radio right now than ours second caution of the day fernandez has had some trouble adjusting to these heavier cars he sure has he's had a good attitude about it but they have had to fix a lot of cars at five shop the final stats for the 2005 hendrick development program season are this and you can look this up as well and i swear i am not making this up in 22 starts all four drivers combined for just one top 10 a best finish of 10th by adrian fernandez in mexico city an average finish of 31.2 and 10 dnfs after 2005 rick hendrick kind of put the hendrick development program on hold for a little while and once junior joined the team in 2008 they were able to use junior motorsports as a satellite team in the nascar xfinity series and lo and behold a year into the new partnership they hit it big with the one and only brad keselowski a future cup series champion like i said in the beginning it's safe to say dale earnhardt jr has earned the reputation of being a driver whisperer basically a guy who can identify talent and mesh it with the right team and the right crew chief right away not to say he's been perfect as he has had some misses in the past but a lot of amazing hits but nowhere near the level of missing as rick hendrick did in the early 2000s blake feast boston reed and kyle kristolof were let go from hendrick motorsports after 2005 and did not make a single cup series start in their
